I was curious so I checked - Disney+’s Moana (2016) version does NOT have any of the Pacific Islander options for the audio or subtitles. That feels unfair. That means one can only watch it in Te Reo Māori, Hawaiian, or Tahitian if one bought the dvd. I feel like that is kind of predatory and uninclusive. If the stock runs out, what are people who want to watch Moana in those languages supposed to do? And what if they’re already paying for Disney+? That seems unfair. Additionally, Frozen II has a Sámi dub, The Lion King has a Swahili dub and apparently Bambi has an Arapaho dub (random???* Would love to know more. This clip is adorable). None of which are available on Disney+.
I will acknowledge that my family subscribes in the USA, and that this might be different in different areas. But also, Moana got dubbed in Hawaiian (by the original English language actress, Auli’i Cravalho!) and Hawaii is in the USA … so where the hell is it???
*okay looks like it was an Arapaho-led effort meant to help raise money and encourage young learners, due to the short and simple dialogue. Not like when Disney just decided to assign Swahili as the Lion King’s language because both are African ig

No you know WHAT I’m doubling down on this because if you listen to the songs in Te Rēo Maōri the music is so beautiful. I just wish the lyrics actually told a meaningful story.
(And “Get Lost” is renamed “Te Pō”, aka the Night, an allusion to the goddess that traps Maui in mythology which is SUCH GOOD storytelling for Matangi)
No offense to Bear and Barlow but LMM just GETS how to write lyrics from the perspective of a minority group suffering from colonization, and I have to think that comes from being marginalized himself.
Like take these lyrics from the first film:
| I have crossed the horizon to find you
| I know your name
| They have stolen the heart from inside you
| But this does not define you
Versus:
| We can rise, we will rise
| We will rise, we can go beyond!
It just feels a little like imitation without firsthand experience and that’s maybe why their lyrics feel so hollow.

Reo Māori Dub of 'Moana 2' Arrives the Same Day as English-Language Counterpart
A little over a month remains until Moana 2 hits theaters, and for folks in New Zealand, they’ll have more than one way of experiencing it. In addition to watching the sequel to the beloved 2016 animated film in English, there will also be the option of watching it dubbed in reo Māori; making it the first time an indigenous-language Disney animated feature will premiere alongside its…

Arotakeka o Moana 2: Reo Māori
Inanahi, i haere māua ki te whare pikitia ki te mātakitaki i a Moana 2 i te reo Māori. Kei raro ōku whakaaro (he aha te kupu Māori mō "spoiler"?):
I tino rēhia ahau ki tēnei kiriata. He rawe kā waiata, ā, he ahua o kā waiata nō Te Ao o Kiwa. He rawe te kōrero, ā, i harikoa ahau i te kiteka atu i a Māui e kumea raki ana tētahi motu. He Pākehā ahau, ekari, he whakamīharo te kite i kā tini mea tauka. Kāore e taea e au te pohewa he pēhea te āhua o kā tamariki Māori me kā tamariki o Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, ki te kite i ō rātou tikaka ā-iwi.
E rua noa ōku amuamu.
Ko te amuamu tuatahi: Te tere o te kōrero kiriata kāore i tino pai.
Ko te amuamu tuarua: He rite tonu tōku amuamu mō kiriata Disney Reo Māori katoa.

All my notes & lessons are, so far, thanks to Tōku Reo & their resources.
Grammar:
Calling people by their name! If a person has a non-Māori name or a Māori name w/ 3 or more vowel sounds in it, then address them like this:
Kia ora, Moana! OR Tēnā koe, Diana. OR Tēnā koe, Deepika!
If a person has a Māori name w/ 2 or less vowel sounds in it, then you add an “e” before their name like this:
Kia ora, e Tū. OR Tēnā koe, e Hera! OR Kia ora, e Pita.
Kupu Hou:
hoa: used to refer to a friend or companion (mate, friend, etc.)
māmā: mother
tāne: man/male/husband
kōtiro: girl
tamaiti: child/boy
pēpi: baby
kuia: elderly woman/grandmother
pāpā: father/uncle
mokopuna (often shortened to moko): grandchild
whānau: family/extended family; also means ti give birth/to be born

On Aotearoa's version of Disney Plus, Moana Reo Māori is a separate option:
Moana Tahitian is available in the 'Extras' section of the original/English Moana:
But we also don't have Hawai'i language available. As far as I can tell, Moana ma ka ʻŌlelo Hawai'i has never been released digitally, which is a massive shame, and I hope it's rectified.
[Also, Moana 2 Reo Māori is being released in theaters simultaneously with the English version this week, which I am THRILLED about. Already booked my tickets!]

Okay, so it did not occur to me to check the Extras section. Thank you for pointing it out! We also have the Reo Māori AND the Tahitian version in the Extras section. But as you said, no Ōlelo Hawai’i version. How bizarre! Not that it should matter, but they literally have the main voice actress on that version!
The Lion King has both its Zulu (I was mistaken, lots of Swahili names in TLK but it was only dubbed in Zulu), and Reo Māori (didn’t know!) in the extras section. Weird choice? I’m wondering if those languages were dubbed/subbed via a different program and they were too lazy to integrate it into the regular options.
Frozen II has its Sámi version in the extras section.
And Bambi has its Arapaho version in the Extras! Though it seems to have been cut down to 1 hour, 9 minutes, as opposed to the original movie’s 1 hour, 14 minutes. I have a feeling they just did not want to update the credits? I’ll try to investigate later, I should be writing a paper now lol.
In any case, thank you for helping me find this more accurate information! My original point still stands for the Ōlelo Hawai’i version, and I still think it’s unfair and deceptive to hide these versions amongst the extra sections; hopefully the thought to check there occurs among more people! And hopefully by the time Moana 2 releases to Disney+, they’ll have rectified this mistake in time for the Samoan dub!
I hope you enjoy Moana 2!!! I won’t spoil it (so don’t go looking on my blog, I do NOT tag for spoilers) but I thought it was a great movie. If you write up a review for the Reo Māori version, please tag me, I’d love to read it! I’m curious how things like pacing and other aspects may change due to the dubbing :)
