I was curious so I checked - Disney+’s Moana (2016) version does NOT have any of the Pacific Islander options for the audio or subtitles. That feels unfair. That means one can only watch it in Te Reo Māori, Hawaiian, or Tahitian if one bought the dvd. I feel like that is kind of predatory and uninclusive. If the stock runs out, what are people who want to watch Moana in those languages supposed to do? And what if they’re already paying for Disney+? That seems unfair. Additionally, Frozen II has a Sámi dub, The Lion King has a Swahili dub and apparently Bambi has an Arapaho dub (random???* Would love to know more. This clip is adorable). None of which are available on Disney+.
I will acknowledge that my family subscribes in the USA, and that this might be different in different areas. But also, Moana got dubbed in Hawaiian (by the original English language actress, Auli’i Cravalho!) and Hawaii is in the USA … so where the hell is it???
*okay looks like it was an Arapaho-led effort meant to help raise money and encourage young learners, due to the short and simple dialogue. Not like when Disney just decided to assign Swahili as the Lion King’s language because both are African ig

Moana was submitted without propaganda.
The Sound of Music:
How do you solve a problem like Maria? Create an iconic movie about her conflict of love during the lead up to one of the most hateful eras. Then cast the amazing Julie Andrews with Christopher Plummer opposite.

My roommate, ranting about Moana: “They’re sending the wrong message to young girls! It’s not about a man’s hair or bod. It’s about what’s on the inside.” Pauses thoughtfully. “Whether he turns eels into coconut trees.”

I CAN FINALLY JOIN THE MOANA 2 BANDWAGON YIPEEE (Spoilers under the cut)
Storyline-wise, this movie was AMAZING. For someone who is into Polynesian culture like me, the storyline was a solid 10/10 and a worthy addition to the Moana franchise. It was packed to the brim with mythology and lore, and it didn’t feel like it broke the continuity with the first movie at all. All my “same scene as the first movie” issues were dissipated, for any similarity is handled so that it doesn’t feel stale, but rather like a neat homage; I especially like what they did with the Kakamoras. The relationship between Simea and Moana, like I was expecting, was really touching, and 19 years old Moana design is a feast for the eyes (guess who’s going to start saving for the Moana 2 limited edition doll now?).
Now, onto the flaws.
They made Moana too ‘quirky’. Some of her behaviors and expressions were way too exaggerated and downright cringe. The character of Matangi was really interesting, but her appearance was so brief, she felt a tad underdeveloped. I mean, her role in the movie is very clear to me, but I wish they had incorporated the character in the story better. Am I the only one who perceived an awkward romantic subtext between Moana and Maui (and didn’t like it)??
The songs were mid, a 6/10. Not the native ones, like Mana Vavau, those were amazing. But the ones written by Barlow and Bear were quite generic. I only really liked Beyond. We’re Back was enjoyable, but quite generic. Can I Get A Chee-Hoo? simply felt like a Warrior Face rip-off. For someone who loves Disney songs to pieces, the absence of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s lyrical genius was palpable. Had he contributed to the soundtrack, this movie would have reached peak perfection to me.
On the other hand, CAN YOU BELIEVE WE HAVE A DEMIGODDESS, CANONICALLY IMMORTAL DISNEY PRINCESS NOW?? I absolutely love what they did with her in the end; she is the first Disney Princess who dies for good and then gets brought back to life as something entirely new and different. And she even got a tat! (Fifth Spirit Elsa doesn’t count for me - in her case, the notion of ‘spirit’ feels more like a title than a change of status.)
Overall, I’m really satisfied. 9/10. Too bad for the songs! I really hope they bring Lin-Manuel Miranda back for Moana 3.
