Murder in Provence
I read the books by M.L. Longworth ages ago, and loved them. Mystery and rich French people in the south of France... hard to dislike.
The show was alright; not my favorite, but enjoyable. I found the casting strange though. And Antoine and Marine's dynamic wasn't what I expected from reading the books. Signora Volpe with Emilia Fox has a similar premise and vibe, and I enjoyed that more than Murder in Provence.

Tues. April 5, 2022: Curl Up & Catch Up

Thursday wasn’t as productive as I’d hoped, but I got the most important things done. I got a wonderful email from a producer to whom I’d submitted some radio plays. I wasn’t sure if what I…

My own (academic?) aesthetics has been defined by:
Pamela Dean’s Tam Lin (which is set in a university so it sort of feels like dark academia, if you squint—got me interested in theatre and was my introduction to a lot of literary works)
Steven Brust’s The Sun, Moon and Stars (okay I had a thing for modernized fairy tales but this one is just full of gorgeously described art)
Stargirl and Love, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli (learning that is personal, plus the whole concept of a shadow curriculum)
The Saint, starring Val Kilmer (that whole pretending to be an artist to get the girl? I want to be that artist—not necessarily for seduction purposes)
San Soleil by Chris Marker (is one of my favourite films; the fact that it appears like a spliced together mini videos feels like I can make something like that too)
My other favourite film is The Gleaners and I by Agnes Varda (an interesting look at France and the idea of making art from found items)
Old Nancy Drew novels (definitely got me into secret compartments and mysteries)
Other favourite mystery writers (Louise Penny, Charlotte MacLeod, Elizabeth Peters, ML Longworth, etc plus some Japanese mystery shows—Galileo is a good one since he’s basically a mad physicist who helps the police solve crimes)
The Women’s Room by Marilyn French (feminism; kinda grim in retrospect but mind-blowing when I was in my teens)
I also read the first book Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and I’m sure it counts, especially that first part in the Bodleian.
And lots and lots of fanfic
Modern day college au fanfics of Merlin could count as dark academia (with less killing) And some Teen Wolf fanfics set in college could also fit the bill.
Also, I distinctly remember a couple of Sweet Valley University books that had a secret society and a possible vampire in them. (I’m sure they’ll be worse than I’m remembering them though lol, but yes, that one definitely made me intrigued about the concept of secret societies)
Plus Da Vinci Code and The Historian
(Also writing this list made me want to watch Highlander for some reason)

Canada : Death at the Chateau Bremont, by M.L. Longworth
Goodreads :
Introducing a seductive new mystery series set in Provence-featuring chief magistrate Antoine Verlaque. Set in charming and historic Aix-en-Provence, France, Death at the Château Bremont introduces readers to Antoine Verlaque, the handsome and seductive chief magistrate of Aix, and his on-again, off- again love interest, law professor Marine Bonnet. When local nobleman Etienne de Bremont falls to his death from the family château, the town is abuzz with rumors. Verlaque suspects foul play and must turn to Marine for help when he discovers that she had been a close friend of the Bremonts. This is a lively whodunit steeped in the rich, enticing, and romantic atmosphere of southern France.

310: Murder in Provence, M.L. Longworth Talks about Her Series Coming to BritBox
Tumblr media
Provencal mystery writer M.L. Longworth joins me on the podcast for this year's French Week to share some exciting news about her series.
I invited Mary Lou back to the show (see our previous conversations here - ep. #268 - and here - ep. #203) as I recently learned her novels had been optioned for a television series to air on BritBox. Longworth shares many details about the cast, when it will premiere, which books will be included in season one and much more. Be sure to take the tour of Aix-en-Provence she gave me in this post to enjoy a taste of the world of Antoine Verlaque and Marine Bonnet, and tune in to today's episode as she talks about food, shares a delicious recipe AND shares the synopsis for her upcoming 10th mystery and when to expect it to be released.
Links mentioned during our conversation:
1st book in her Provençal series - Death at the Chateau Bremont
Most recent book in the series (9th) - The Vanishing Museum on the Rue Mistral

M.L. Longworth's Lentil & Duck Breast Salad
As shared during episode #310 of The Simple Sophisticate podcast, Provençal mystery writer M.L. Longworth shared a recipe during our conversation that offers a quintessential taste of summer in Provence.
1/2 cup French lentils (cooked) (follow the directions on the package or simply boil in water for about 10-15 minutes, then drain. )
6 Tbsp walnut oil or vinagriette
2 Tbsp sherry vinegar or red-wine vinegar
1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
freshly ground pepper
1-2 cups mache (lamb's tongue lettuce) or watercress (washed and roughly chopped)
1-2 ounces thin slices of cooked duck breast (substitute - prosciutto)
Prepare the lentils: add the lentils to water and bring to a boil, simmer for 10-15 minutes until to desired tenderness. Drain out excess water.
Prepare the vinegriette: in a small bowl add the vinegar, dijon and then slowly add and whisk in the walnut oil. Finish with freshly ground pepper to taste.
If you are unable to find duck and cook yourself (often you can find cooked duck breast in the markets in France), a great substitute is ham or prosciutto - thinly sliced.
Divide the vinegriette. Dress the salad with half and then add the lentils to the salad and add gradually the remaining vinegriette to dress the rest of the salad (you may not need to use all of the vinegriette or you may need to make more - just keep the proportions the same). Plate the lentils and lettuce and top with the duck breast. Enjoy with a glass of rosé - bien sûr!

Happy Tuesday 📚🌺🌙😁 Busy re-reading the Verlaque and Bonnet detective novels by ML Longworth @mllongworth 🕵️‍♂️📖 My spouse is an actual detective who is a huge fan of mystery novels (🤣 I wonder why). So I’m always reading mysteries to pre-screen for his collection 📚😉 These novels are set in Aix-en-Provence and are terribly southern French in the best ways. I enjoy them especially when I’m in a missing-France mood 😘 because they capture the local flavor perfectly, while also delivering an intricate, satisfying mystery 🔍 Check them out if you get a chance and if you have any great detective or mystery reads, please leave me a suggestion!!! Always looking for more books to devour here 🤩 * * * * * * * #tuesdaythoughts #mysterybooks #mysterynovel #bookrecommendations #bookreviews #bookreviewer #livreaddict #livrestagram #booksarebae #readingislit #readstagram #mysteryreader #authorslife #readmorebooks #booksandflowers #quoteoftheday✏️ #bookquotes #oscarwilde #oscarwildequotes #detective #detectivefiction #fictionbooks #crimebooks #frenchbook #francemylove #reread #rereading #verlaqueandbonnet #mllongworth #freedomquotes (at Saint Augustine, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAFmqwCgz0A/?igshid=6h2tzfntuadc

You old romantic!
Also, a three-day beard- isn't it the one from a BBC Les Mis audiobook poster? Unshaven Roger Rights here, please support
You know, for a man who goes from totally smooth to fully beardtastic and back again so often there are surprisingly few pictures of him stubbly.
Regard, stubbly Rogers: Stubbly Jean Valjean as requested; rakish rakish rakish stubble with a moustache; stubbly Shakespeare Live (which I've never tracked down footage of to my shame); surprisingly only a bit stubbly Thomas Blunt the northern pirate; flawless beautiful unshaven Roger from Les Mis rehearsals; and an older but still flawless unshaven Roger from Uncle Vanya rehearsals (2012 not 2020).
