BROAD EQ

Make broad EQ adjustments for a natural sound. "Broad EQ" refers to making wide, gentle adjustments to the equalization (EQ) of audio frequencies rather than making narrow or precise changes. This technique involves boosting or cutting a larger range of frequencies, which results in a more natural, musical sound.

Broad EQ adjustments are particularly useful for enhancing the overall tonal balance of a mix, such as adding warmth to vocals or brightness to a guitar, without making it sound harsh or unnatural. By making gradual changes across a wider frequency spectrum, you avoid creating sharp or isolated boosts and cuts that can sound artificial or draw attention to specific frequencies, helping the mix to sound more cohesive and pleasing to the ear.

Ok, time for a weird one. I actually engineered the Hey Duggee original theme tune. Yup. 

Oliver M. A. Knowles (of Meet Me in St Louis fame) and I sat in front of the same beaten up Imac I’d recorded a lot of horrific distorted music into over the years and worked through various permutations of a theme tune pitch for a children’s TV series. He had borrowed a mate’s banjo and I think there is even some of the awful budget electric mandolin I still have knocking around somewhere in my basement. 

There was a bunch of back and forth with the agency. I actually have a few prior versions and works in progress knocking around somewhere.

Absolutely surreal.

An EP I recorded and mixed by Calvary, formally known as Seven Vessels. Melancholy indie pop madness. Selected from a number of songs recorded over two days in a Brighton practice room. I remember busting out a bunch of weird guitar pedals for this session, working in a creative whirl with the band. The solo track “I’ve Got This Fever” is one of my favourite recordings. Single take, no overdubs, three mics, some simple but very effective mix techniques.
