Alright, this will be the final post today about the making of The Rhythm of the City in 2019. Just a few random behind-the-scenes clips I found on an hard drive I thought I’d share today, now that the album is two years old. This was my first time in the studio with @dannybanksdrummer and @thewilsonmc together, but happily it would not be the last. And this was my fourth album to be graced by @algamble1 on the keys. The entire record was a mixture of analog and digital technology, back and forth from one to the other. We tracked the basics live on @electraphonic’s 8-track Scully, with drums on two tracks, including my live vocal and lead guitar. We then transferred those 8 tracks to digital where we added bgvs, percussion, and yes, ELECTRIC SITAR! (Thank you, @highlowrecording!). Although we mixed digitally, we used much analog gear in the process of course, including Scott’s Ampex tape machine for slapback echo, just like Sam Phillips did at Sun Studio in 1954. Then the mix was digitized and mastered, uploaded to the streaming servers, and sent off to the pressing plant, where it became analog again and went on to become 7 different colors of vinyl over the next two years thanks to @wildhoneyrecords___. Thank you Scott Bomar and @adamemphis1457 for making everything sound awesome. I’m gonna miss that little studio on South Main. Do you usually split your bass signal? Splitting up the bass signal can help to treat the higher frequencies different than the lower frequencies. If you have you can use a dry DI signal as for the low part and a miced amp signal as the higher part. Otherwise just copy the bass track you have. Then add a high pass filter (low cut) to the bass signal that is meant for the high frequency treatment and a low pass filter (high cut) to the other track. Make sure to set up the filters at the same frequency. I usually set the filters depending on the key of the song. I don't want the filter set in the lowest octave where the fundamental frequencies are played. This way you can make sure that you don't cut within these notes. Now you can use a different compressor for instance on the lower part than on the higher part. A common compressor to achieve a solid low end is the MV2 from waves for example. Finally you can route both tracks together again to a bass mix bus. Do you limit yourself? Sometimes it's difficult to mix with your ears when there are that many visual tools on the screen. It helps to reduce these tools to a minimum to force yourself not to mix with the eyes. It's not possible to completely renounce the screen when mixing in the box, but a hardware DAW controller can help in this case. Another cool advantage of a hardware controller is that the music becomes touchable. Pushing faders and turning knobs is just a different thing than moving tiny visual surfaces with a mouse.
