When Geurae hears the familiar rush of footsteps coming from behind, he's tempted to start running. 

But alas, he's never been able to escape from Han Seokyool's clinginess before. 

"My darling Geurae." Seokyool croons as he naturally wraps an arm around Geurae's shoulders to pull him closer. The latter stumbles slightly from the action, though he does nothing more than shoot a glare at the perpetrator. The sight only seems to amuse him further, however, as they come to a stop in front of the lifts. "Did you sleep well?" 

"Yes, I did." Geurae answers drily, pressing the lift button with some difficulty because of how clingy the bastard is. He tries to pry the Seokyool off his shoulder, missing his days of having personal space, only for the offending hand to slide down to his waist instead. Barely containing a flinch when the man lightly pinches him there, Geurae decides to accept his fate. It won't prevent him from squirming every so often though. "You're here early; Do you have a lot of work to do?" 

The lift arrives with a melodic ding and they walk in, briefly detached from each other. As Geurae habitually presses the 15th and 16th button, Seokyool practically wraps himself around him from behind, chin tucked squarely in the crook of Geurae's neck. 

"What a woeful day it is, to be coming in early for work on such a special day!" Seokyool bemoans. 

"Is today a special day?" 

"...Jang Geurae, it's Valentine's Day. Why else would you be fully booked with meetings today?"

"Thanks for the reminder, but why and how do you even know my schedule?" 

"I asked here and there." Seokyool vaguely answers, with no attempt to explain how he managed to overhear the information through sheer determination. He instead digs through his briefcase to pull out something. "Anyway, it's because I wanted to give you this." 

Geurae looks down, only to be surprised by an intricately embroidered pouch. He accepts the gift, carefully studying it with slight awe as he brushes his fingers over the silky fabric and impressive recreation of a bowl full of black and white Go stones. 

"It's beautiful." 

Geurae can feel the pride radiating off of the man's chest after he says that. He pulls open the drawstrings of the pouch to find an assortment of Hershey's kisses. Geurae almost snorts.

"Do you like it?"

"Yeah, I do. I didn't know you knew embroidery."

"It's a hobby I picked up from my grandma. Since you liked it, I'm glad."

"But… it's too much. I don't have anything to give you." 

Surprisingly, Seokyool lets go of Geurae and steps into his field of view with a mischievous expression. He clears his throat, leaning in as he taps his cheek pointedly without a word. When he sees Geurae scrunch his nose in disgust, Seokyool almost laughs off the matter and is about to step away-

-When Geurae's expression morphs into one of consideration. 

Before Seokyool can do anything, Geurae speaks up. 

"I suppose it will have to do."

And he tilts his head upwards and brushes his lips gently against Seokyool's cheek. 

The action must have only lasted mere seconds, yet Seokyool feels as though an eternity has gone by. He barely stops himself from reaching out to touch the man's lips, just to make sure that they were truly as soft as it felt on his skin, instead cupping his cheek with a hand. As if it would retain the sliver of warmth that still remained. 

The lift dings.

"I'll see you later, Han Seokyool." Geurae murmurs with suspiciously pink ears, before stepping out of the lift. He gives a small wave as Seokyool slowly turns to face him, like he still can't quite process what has happened, until the doors close. "Happy Valentine's Day." 

Inside the lift, Seokyool's face burns, though his smile is giddy.

there are very few dramas that burrow their way so deep into my heart that they become a part of my soul, my conscience - don't get me wrong, i like/love A LOT of dramas (im a serial liker/lover you can say) - but with some dramas, it's like I have a perpetual hangover. Kinda like "the one - kdrama version" (assume the one to be a group with a small number of elements) (sorry my stem ass is showing) (also sorry for the endless brackets, my adhd is also showing)

Anyway, the point is i am pretty sure that Love Next Door is on the verge of joining this set already inhabited by Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Misaeng and My Mister.

Things K-dramas have managed to convince me are actually interesting for 16 episodes:

- The inner workings of a trading company

- Taxes (twice)

- Baseball team management

- Art Foundation fraud

- The politics of the Seoul hagwon system (new!)

I have been procrastinating finishing this one for weeks. Because I love them so much and because I didn't want to see the hurt that I knew was coming and I didn't want it to end.

I just finished this show and already it occupies a top place in my kdrama list. I watched the last 3 episodes today and it was quite the journey. Episode 19 made me cry almost all the way through. And it was made to do just that. The stretched goodbye of Mr Oh was efficient in that regard. It was so good. It was a good balance with the injustice of it all.

Unjust. So many of the thing that happened were unjust. But not at all surprising. As Suk Yool so eloquently put it in the last episode when Young Yi asked if his manager would keep his job after the beating he took, "Since he's a psychopath, absolutely". Much like him I was never under the delusion that things would work out for our team and the company would do the right thing for them, or for GeuRae.

But the rage at some of the behaviour was almost impossible to contain. I wanted to scream and punch something more times than I can count. There are despicable humans here and I wish more than anything that I could believe, this is just a show, there aren't actually people like this, that they'll get what's coming to them.

But every episode there was another side. People who are doing their best, trying to be good colleagues and cheering for each other. And this is, for me, where the biggest strength of the show lies. In this balancing act that even when I wanted to press pause and shout at my screen, there was a moment of hope. But in a real sense, not in an wishful thinking way. The perseverance of these characters gave me hope, that somehow, they would find a way to be okay. No matter the circumstances. If nothing else they had each other.

Even as GeuRae time in the company was coming to an end, and even believing that it wouldn't work (as much as I wanted him to stay, because he wanted to stay, it just wouldn't make sense at that point), watching some of the others come together to try and change the system for him made me emotional and it was a real testament to how GeuRae affected everyone around him.

I was not sold on the other three interns from the start. I couldn't decide If I loved Suk Yool or just found him annoying, although I think both might be true. I did think he has it worst up until the end, even when Young Yi and Baek Ki started to have an easier time in their respective teams, he was still being treated like garbage. The letter he wrote for GeuRae at the end made me cry. Yes he could be a bit too much at times but his heart was in the right place.

I really liked Baek Ki's journey. I hated him so much in the beginning, his ego and his superiority complex towards GeuRae pissed me off so much. But by the end I respected him because he finally respected GeuRae and saw that they had different strengths and he didn't always have to have the competition mode on.

Young Yi was different. Her scenes with her team made my stomach turn but I don't think I ever connected as much to her. Which is strange. For some reason I wasn't invested in her family drama or her past with the other company. I wanted to be, but I just wasn't. I don't know if it was me or the show but as much as I liked the scenes where all of them were together, when it was just her I just felt disconnected.

Them. I love them. I cried tears of joy in this moment. I just wanted them to be okay and together and as much as it could go either way, I am thankful that this is how it ended. Mr Oh is so dear to me. When he got sick I almost lost it. If anything were to happen to him... Anyway he was fine and so was I. He cared so much about his team but always needed to keep that manager image that inevitably faltered when he got drunk, which was a lot. Bless his wife. She was truly his rock through everything.

I adore him. From the very first moment I was just cheering for him all the way. His journey was wonderful. He was kind, he persevered and was always grateful for the opportunity he had. Loved to see him all grown up by the end. If I had just a wish was that he actually got to play baduk with Mr Choi and had completely obliterated him.

As usual, I don't really have the words to express my complete feelings about this show. Which is weird considering this is way longer than I thought it would be. Anyway. My heart is full but it was hard getting here. But the journey was definitely worth it.

Here’s a list of all the Kdramas/Korean movies that I watched in 2023 + some of my thoughts (spoiler free)

The Glory

-Gonna be honest, I only started watching because Kim Hieora and Jung Sung Il are in this show.

-But I ended up really liking it. The bullying scenes were horrifying, the characters were memorable, and overall it was very well made.

Stranger

-HWANG SIMOK! I love him so much! BAE DOONA! I love her so much!

-I loved all the characters and all the twists

Stranger 2

-This season was good too. Seeing the dynamics and relationships between all the characters change was so interesting

Unlocked

-IM SIWAN! The reason why I watched this movie <3

-Is it the best and most unique movie? No. Was it pretty good and entertaining? Yeah!

All Of Us Are Dead

-Even in the zombie apocalypse they’re not free of bullying.

-My heart broke many times. Those poor kids didn’t deserve to go through all of that! (Except Na Yeon. I still don’t like her.)

The Glory Part 2

-Not the typical type of revenge. But I think it’s a very fitting ending.

Physical 100

-This show inspired me to start taking better care of myself.

-Watching everyone hype up this show so much then watching all the controversies come out in real time was crazy. Looking forward to season 2

Kingdom

-This show was on my radar because that zombie dude from Physical 100 said he did the choreography

-I love all of the characters and the zombies were so freaky

Kingdom 2

-The Queen might’ve been the scariest part of this show

-I love this show, season 3? Maybe?

Kingdom: Ashin of the North

-Han Ho Yeol from DP?!?!

-It was really interesting seeing another side to this story

Silent Sea

-BAE DOONA! GONG YOO!

-I don’t understand why this flopped. I really liked this show!

Siren: Survive The Island

-I was team athlete til the end! (I thought Kim Seong Yeon was hot)

-If there isn’t a season 2 I’m going to fight Netflix

Misaeng

-Im Siwan <3

-I really like this show. It really gave me hope and it honestly inspired me to work harder. I’m also trying to learn to play baduk

D.P. 2

-So many emotions. The ending left me feeling a bit empty. I’ve grown so attached to these characters and now it’s just over.

The Wailing

-I think I need to watch this a second time to really analyze it.

-I really like the sfx makeup

Monster

-Accurate representation of neurodivergent people/mentally disabled people? No.

-Interesting villain and fight scenes? Yes

Hide and Seek

-I really liked the twist and how eerie the vibes were

Memoir of a Murder

-I love unreliable narrators. Not knowing what’s real and what isn’t really puts you on the end he of your seat

-Also I didn’t even realize that was Kim Nam Gil

The Policeman’s Lineage

-I only watched this for Kwon Yul

-Decent story but I feel like it fell short of its potential

Hansel and Gretel

-Solid start but I didn’t realize that it was going in the direction that it did

-Not the ending that I expected but I’m satisfied with it

Ballerina

-Honestly, they were so over dramatic when it came to the bdsm stuff. Like okay, he’s kinky. That’s the least concerning thing about him.

-My mom got me to watch this because she likes Kim Ji Hoon

The Mimic

-Interesting concept with interesting characters

-The ending was so fitting, I’m very satisfied with it

Champion

-Another movie I watched for Kwon Yul

-I really like this movie, it’s very comforting and funny

Mother

-This is a cautionary tale, you cannot tell me otherwise!

-I was SHOCKED! It was just so sudden. I don’t know how to explain it without spoiling what happened.

Sweet Home 2

-Interesting. I’m not sure what I expected from this season but this wasn’t it.

-I found it entertaining but I’m not quite sure if I like how they’re approaching this new thing that they’re doing.

a misaeng valentine's day au , if you will .

"Section Chief Cheon, Deputy Kim."

The two yell out affirmatives, then wince at their volume and huddle closer into the circle they've formed in front of Deputy Manager Oh's desk. The man in question shoots them a glare but otherwise doesn't comment on it. Thankfully, the office is empty.

"Are the preparations for tomorrow done?"

"Yes sir," Cheon nods, his mouth set in a grim line. "I've already notified the receptionist to make sure that Geurae's deliveries are to be thrown away immediately. I also made sure to ask them to not allow any delivery workers up to our floor."

"Good work, Cheon. Kim, what about you?"

"I've switched all of Geurae's things with mine, so he'll be able to work at my desk with no issues. I've also prepared 2 spray bottles full of water if any of those... things try to come in."

"Excellent. I've also pulled some strings so that I can attend some of the meetings Jang Geurae has tomorrow." Oh Sangshik lets out a severe sigh and claps both of his subordinates on the shoulder. "Tomorrow is going to be a warzone, but we've done the best we could to prepare for it. Get some rest tonight, so we can fight tomorrow, alright?"

The following chorus of "Yes, sir!" rings out loud and clear throughout the empty office.

The next day, Geurae rounds the corner to find a shocking sight. Quickly jogging to the Sales Team 3 office, he bows in greeting with a flustered expression.

"Good morning everyone! I didn't expect all of you to be here so early."

"You're as energetic as ever, Jang Geurae." Cheon replies. "We have a busy day today, so make sure you're prepared."

"Yes, sir! I'll work hard today as well!"

"Jang Geurae, you're gonna pierce my eardrums." Kim deadpans as Geurae shrugs off his jacket and carefully places his bag on his desk. "Did something good happen- What is that?"

"Hmm?" Geurae asks distractedly, until he realises that Kim is staring straight at the pouch he's holding. "Oh, this was a Valentine's Day gift!"

The temperature drops imperceptibly, as the three members of Sales Team 3 slowly raise their heads to stare at Geurae with unreadable expressions.

He's none the wiser.

"Han Seokyool gave it to me in the lift." Geurae continues, not noticing the way Kim mutters something under his breath and Cheon rolls his eyes. "I didn't even realise it was Valentine's Day today because I was too busy preparing for today's meetings, but he made the pouch himself. It was really nice of him!"

The office falls into a deafening silence for a few moments before Oh gets up and throws his pen to the ground. "Han Seokyool that sneaky little bastard-" He yells, veins popping in his neck before he cuts himself off, visibly trying to calm himself down. "Forget that. So. He didn't do anything else right?"

Geurae looks down at the pouch he's cradling oh so carefully. At the memory of him giving the man a kiss as a token of gratitude, no matter how innocent it was, he can't help the blush that tinges the tips of his ears.

"I'm going to kill that bastard."

"Huh?" Geurae asks with widened eyes, blinking rapidly as he tries to figure out why Oh is holding the letter opener he uses for mail with a white-knuckled grip. "He didn't do anything to me, I'm just a bit embarrassed…"

That stops Oh in his tracks, already poised to march out of the office to the 16th floor.

"Tell us."

Geurae squirms, pinned under the deadly stares of his superiors, though he eventually sighs and gives in.

"I gave him a light peck on the cheek." he mumbles, his ears turning so red they might as well be bleeding.

This time, Oh's calendar takes the fall.

"I'm going to visit the 16th floor." Oh says calmly.

"Oh! I can help you if you need me to-"

"YOU." Oh bellows, jamming his index finger in Geurae's direction with wild eyes, his gaze murderous. He storms past them, letter opener in hand. "Stay here. Work. Don't even dream of leaving this office unless it's for your meetings today."

"But what about lunch?"

"WE'RE GETTING TAKEAWAY!"

Then he's gone.

Still confused from the entire ordeal, Geurae turns to the remaining members of Sales Team 3 for answers.

He doesn't get any answers.

"Cheon," Kim starts, staring intently at one of the spray bottles on his desk, "do you think I can get away with it if I replace this with toilet water?"

The man hums thoughtfully before shaking his head. "What about gochujang?"

"You're a genius, Cheon. Should I go down and borrow some from the cafeteria auntie?"

"While you're at it, add some vinegar. I'll go check on Oh if he needs any help. Lord knows we don't need another meeting with HR again."

"Then what about-"

"Just sit here and work!"

If he wasn't getting yelled at, Geurae would marvel at how well they sync with each other. Instead, he hurriedly takes his seat at his desk, that for some reason has been switched to Kim's original spot, and pulls out some files to skim through.

He has a lot of work to do today, after all.

watching misaeng , the only thing i could think about was " damn , valentine's day must be rough when you have someone like jang geurae in the team " then it was like i was slapped with a lightbulb

like , imagine jang geurae's schedule on valentine's day so jam packed with meetings because every single client is trying to woo him , yet he's totally unaware of the chaos . even the office isn't safe , and he only has 3 middle-aged men who are close to comitting murder to those who try to chat him up .

i do have the scene between jang geurae and han seokyool written out , but it didn't quite seem to fit so i just wrote this one !

but i honestly love misaeng so much it's honestly in my top 5 kdramas !!!

Raise your hands if you’re an Im Si-wan fan. Even if you’ve never heard of the former ZE:A K-pop idol-turned-actor, I would encourage you to check out this nuanced actor’s work. To get you started, I’m highlighting two of his K-dramas (“Misaeng,” “Summer Strike”) and a film (“Unlocked”).

This post is a little longer than usual. But before I get to the reviews, I wanted to point out that Im’s character in “Summer Strike” is a runner, just as he was in 2020’s “Run On.” And in the upcoming film “Road to Boston” (보스턴), Im will portray a Korean athlete competing in the 1947 Boston International Marathon — the first since World War II. (It’s set to release in South Korea during the Chuseok holiday this September.) Coincidence? Maybe? But I’m curious to see if running becomes a theme in his other future work as well.
