Exploring the Flavorful World of Mirchi Ka Salan
If you’re a fan of Indian cuisine, you might have come across the delightful dish known as Mirchi Ka Salan. Originating from the rich culinary heritage of Hyderabad, this spicy, tangy curry showcases the versatility of green chilies, making it a must-try for anyone who loves bold flavors. In this blog, we’ll delve into the ingredients that make up this delectable dish and explore its nutritional benefits.
What is Mirchi Ka Salan
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make a traditional Mirchi Ka Salan:
For the Salan:
Green chilies: 10–12 long, mild green chilies (adjust to taste)
Onion: 1 large, finely sliced
Tomatoes: 1–2 medium, pureed
Peanuts: ¼ cup, roasted
Sesame seeds: 2 tablespoons, roasted
Coconut ¼ cup, grated (optional)
Tamarind past: 1 tablespoon (adjust for tanginess)
Mustard seeds: ½ teaspoon
Cumin seeds: ½ teaspoon
Turmeric powder: ½ teaspoon
Red Chili Powder: 1 teaspoon (adjust to taste)
Coriander Powder: 1 teaspoon
Garam Masala: ½ teaspoon
Salt: to taste
Oil: 2–3 tablespoons
Fresh coriander leaves: for garnishing
Preparation Steps
1. Prep the Chilies: Slit the green chilies lengthwise, keeping the stems intact. Remove seeds if you want to reduce the heat.
2. Make the Paste: Blend the roasted peanuts, sesame seeds, and grated coconut (if using) with a little water to form a smooth paste. Set aside.
3. Cook the Onions: In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, letting them splutter. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
4. Add Spices: Stir in the turmeric, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook for a minute to enhance the flavors.
5. Tomato Purée: Add the pureed tomatoes and cook until the oil separates from the mixture.
6. Combine: Add the peanut-sesame paste to the pan and mix well. Pour in about a cup of water to adjust the consistency. Bring it to a simmer.
7. Add Chilies: Gently place the slit chilies in the curry, cover, and let them cook for about 10–15 minutes on low heat.
8. Finish: Stir in the tamarind paste, garam masala, and salt. Let it cook for another 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
Nutritional Benefits
Mirchi Ka Salan is not just a flavorful addition to your meal; it also boasts several nutritional benefits:
Green Chilies: Packed with vitamins A and C, green chilies are known to boost metabolism and improve digestion. They also have anti-inflammatory properties.
Peanuts: A great source of protein and healthy fats, peanuts can help lower cholesterol levels and provide energy.
Sesame Seeds: Rich in calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants, sesame seeds contribute to bone health and may help manage blood pressure.
Coconut: If included, coconut adds healthy fats and can aid in weight management and improved digestion.
Conclusion
Mirchi Ka Salan is a delightful dish that can elevate your dining experience with its robust flavors and impressive nutritional profile. Whether you’re serving it at a family gathering or enjoying it on a quiet evening, this curry is sure to impress. This is a story about a Chef who growing up didn't know a thing about cooking! She who was the apple of her family's eye! Never had she entered the kitchen, nor had she known anything about food. Other than eating it, of course 😇😇🐿 She confesses that at the start of her cooking journey she didn't even know how to boil eggs!!! 🥚🥚🥚😅 In her own words : My biggest inspiration was my mum. I grew up watching her making amazing Hyderabadi food in what can only be described as the "authentic style". My passion for the culinary arts bloomed late, but that did not limit me in trying my hand at various cuisines. In a jiffy, I can cook up anything from Indian to Arabian to Italian or continental. However, my heart always beats for Hyderabadi Khaana! 😀😀😀😊 You see I have a legacy to uphold coming from a long line of excellent home chefs. Not to forget that I love to bring to life the age old recipes passed down in my family. Food is now a major part of my life. I always seek to add a personal touch & love to innovate. As a person I consider perfection in everything. My kitchen has to be spotless & in these times especially I make sure it is sanitized ever so often. Lucky to have a family that is so supportive & want to especially thank my brother who encouraged me & believed I could make it big in the F&B space! I am sure you will love my food and recipes. High levels of spice is one among the uniqueness of Andhra Cuisine. Be it Gutti Venkaaya or Hyderabadi Biryani or Pappu koora or Gongura pickle – all of this can be enjoyed best when it’s on the spicier side.
One such Andhra dish which is one among the top picks in my household is the Mirchi Ka Salan (curried chillies). There is super ‘hotness’ even in the name of this dish!
Chillies dunked in the gravy made out of peanuts, dry coconut and spices are sure to impress your palate.
Here is the recipe for HOT Mirchi Ka salan.
RECIPE:
Video Link:
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 3
INGREDIENTS:
Serrano Peppers – 8-10
Onions – 1
Tomatoes – 2
Garlic – 1 clove
Shredded Dry coconut – 1/2 cup
Tamarind Paste
Peanuts – 1 cup
Coriander leaves – for garnishing
Oil – 2 tbsp
Salt – as per taste
Spice Powders:
Red Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
Garam Masala – 1.5 tsp
Coriander Powder – 1/2 tsp
Cumin Powder – 1/2 tsp
METHOD:
Dry roast the peanuts and keep it aside.
In the same wide bottomed pan, heat oil. Sauté chopped onions and garlic till translucent.
Now, add the chopped tomatoes and salt. Mix well and sauté till the tomatoes are mushy.
Now, add all the spice powders – red chilli powder, garam masala, coriander powder and cumin powder. Mix well.
Add the shredded dry coconut. Mix well and sauté for few minutes.
Keep it aside and allow to cool down.
Once cool, blend the peanuts and the tomato-onion mix with 1 to 1.5 cup of water into a fine paste and keep it aside.
Meanwhile, heat 1 tsp of oil in the same pan, make lengthwise slits to the serrano peppers and shallow fry for few minutes. Keep them aside.
To the same pan, add the blended tomato-onion mix, tamarind paste and water to adjust the gravy consistency. Mix well and allow to boil for 5-6 minutes. Make sure to cover since the gravy has the tendency to splutter.
Next, add the fried serrano peppers. Mix well but gently. Keep on flame for 5-8 minutes.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with some hot rotis.
Mirchi Ka Salan High levels of spice is one among the uniqueness of Andhra Cuisine. Be it Gutti Venkaaya or Hyderabadi Biryani or Pappu koora or Gongura pickle - all of this can be enjoyed best when it's on the spicier side.
