Got my hands on the Encanto art book and it is so crazy to me that originally Casita disliked Mirabel. Didn’t hate her, but would go out of its way to be a jerk towards her. It’s something I’m glad was removed because it def would’ve made it hard to sympathize with Casita once it fell apart 💀

Mirabel Madrigal is my favorite character Disney has ever produced and I need to take a second to talk about it.

The scene where Antonio gets his gift is so utterly beautiful and heartbreaking to me. And it's so telling of Mirabel's character.

Before Antonio asks for her she looks at him from behind, in the shadows. The rest of the family is watching from the outside so logically she should be too, but she's not. She's watching him from the shadows, again conveying she feels like less a member of the family. Her family barely notices her absence. Not only is she watching from the shadows, she's watching from where she can truly support him, in a significantly more intimate place then other Madrigals. She's there for him not his gift.

When he reaches for her, she looks out towards the crowd almost as if she's checking if there's somehow some reason she can justify helping him. But she knows that in the eyes of everyone in this room, it's not her place, that in the eyes of her family, her supporting him is disruptive and even selfish. She knows that in their eyes she cannot help him. She can't.

But he needs her. He can't do this without her. He has shared a room with his cousin since he was born, all his life she's been the one that's there. He sees her as family, as his own sister. He's scared and when he's scared, Mirabel is there. He even chooses to hide under her bed because he feels safer there. He's scared and he needs her.

This look, or at least my interpretation of it, displays sheer terror by this situation. She knows the gravity of this. Someone she loves is hurting and needs her but everyone else will see this in a negative light, but not only does she know she'd break the rules, she also doesn't necessarily want to do this. This means reliving the most traumatic and humiliating night of her life, the moment that began her trauma and her feelings of worthlessness. This means placing herself at the center of everyone's pity and disappointment again. There is so much on the line for her, but she looks at her Tonito's face, his fear, and she knows that the only thing worse then all of this is letting her baby cousin down, letting him feel unloved and alone. The way she has for ten years. She decides she loves him more than she fears Abuela. She can't say no.

She takes a huge leap of faith and in a huge display of courage and love, she takes a step forward.

She looks around again. Looking for any and all signs of disapproval of this. Looking for the strength she just gave to Antonio. It's almost as if she's looking at the same night as the doomed gift ceremony of hers. She feels even more overwhelming bad vibes, because if this doesn't work for Antonio, there's a strong chance she'll be blamed. That she'll be blamed as bad luck or as the one who failed in the first place. But not matter what, Antonio will not do this alone. She will help him. She loves him too much not to.

This choice gets differing levels of approval. Isabella looks incredibly stuck up and indifferent to this, as if Mirabel is actively trying to steal Antonio's moment. Camilo looks pleased that Mirabel is helping his brother. Julieta looks concerned for Mirabel, because she knows this must be hard for her.

Mirabel doesn't let Antonio see her emotional struggle. He's the one who needs her help. She smiles at him, giving him a sense of calm. She uses the word "Let's" letting him know he isn't alone. And after a moment of getting her bearings, she's ready to get him to his door.

He gets in closer to her. Grasps her whole arm and nearly hides behind her. Because she has done this he has complete faith in her. Complete faith that she'll keep him safe. That she loves him. And that's what he needs, he needs her love, he needs his family's support and in giving it him, Mirabel gave him the courage to do this. I personally believe her choosing to love him this much is the only reason the ceremony worked, she embodied the miracle and what is for in this moment, she 'fixed' the magic by remembering why it was there when Abuela couldn't.

When she looks back up, she is still scared but it doesn't matter. She's doing this for him. No one can stop her, not even herself. She sacrificed her comfort, dignity, and peace to help her family who she loved. She didn't sacrifice nearly as much as Pedro but she mirrored his love, she mirrored the love that created her family's miracle. In doing so, she kept it safe. She is the magic. We, as a society, need to talk about this girl much more.

So I rewatched the movie encanto, and I wondered something.

What would Bruno's kids be like?

Hear me out, Alma and Pedro gave birth to the past (Julieta, who heals past wounds), present (Pepa who can control the weather now), and future (Bruno who can see the future)

Julieta and Augustin gave birth to beauty (Isabella, who makes beautiful flowers and plants), brawn (Luisa who is stronger than ten men), and brains (Mirabel who solved the whole family issues)

Pepa and Félix gave birth to hear no evil (Dolores who hears everything), see no evil (Camilo who can change into anyone), and speak no evil (Antonio who can speak to animals and command them)

But what would Bruno's children be if he had any? What would their life be like in the encanto before and after Bruno leaves? Would he have triplets like he was with his sisters since everyone else is years apart? Who would they get along with? What do you think their powers would be? What would their relationship be with the members of the family? What would the villagers think of them?

I need to know what you guys think. Make your story for these three

Random thought,

I was listening to some epic fan made Madrigal villain songs, when an observation came to me.

In those songs, and in the movie itself Mirabel is the mediator. Trying to bridge the gaps, comfort others, bringing an end to conflicts and all that. As we know from the end of the movie, she succeeds.

However, people aren’t perfect, and as someone who tends to be in the mediating position, I know it can go to a downward spiral. Something I noticed in the villain songs was that Mirabel was always the one reaching out to the family member that was going through a villain arc.

So my thought is, what if after not treating Mirabel the best and not letting her help, her family come to her for help all the time. Start relying on her wisdom. At first it may work out very well. Mirabel is a knowledgeable and empathetic person that can help each of her family members in her unique way.

But there is a possibility that they could lean too much on her. She could become stuck in the role of the mediator, stuck in always fixing their problems and it could exhaust her. It would lead her to the exact opposite of her past situation, and may be more in line with what her sisters and cousins were undergoing in the movie.

Balance is key, and with Casita and their powers back, it is something the Madrigals will have to work on.
