I know bruce is just being a petty brat as usual but also... I bet this question has been underlying a lot of their interactions in the last few years. At some point, khoa's obsession with chasing bruce around the world to force him into fights stopped being about simply proving that he's a better vigilante and started being also a way to check if he changed his mind and if not, if he could be convinced

and all of this culminates in this moment in argentina, when he finally manages to get over his pride enough to make his proposal - but not enough to admit why he's making it. Why is his problem if bruce dies fighting his war on crime - if and why he cares about him.

I just love the way these flashbacks scenes manage to convey how much their time together had an impact on khoa - him being the one to propose to bruce that they work together was such a huge fucking deal. I love how you can see that he had to get over a shit ton of stuff to finally decide to make the proposal literally at the last minute - but you can also see it was not enough. And not even just bc of him not admitting his feelings - later when you find out about his backstory it only gets worse. 'Cause yk what? He really did have a chance.

By the time we get to argentina, he had already managed (somehow begrudgingly) to get over most of his problems with bruce's mission and his promise to his parents, bc he is willing to compromise - to a certain point. He say's, "We'll start in a small city in southast Asia, and systematically dismantle it's criminal underworld (...) And then we'll go to the next, and the next. (...) In time, maybe we could even tackle a city like Gotham."

But why start in a "small city in southast Asia", specifically? They travelled the whole world. Couldn't it be any small city, anywhere? Does it make any difference where they start?

My bet is that actually it does. The Midas Empire is from the south east asia. We know from dick that ghostmaker operates mostly in south east asia. He's about to spend a good part of his career working to dismantle the Midas Empire, his biggest challenge and his main motivation for becoming a vigilante, so he had to start there. What he's actually proposing to bruce here is that they work together to reach khoa's goal, one that will take years for them to acomplish, and by the time they finish it, they'll be so fucking good and have so many resources that they'll finally be able to start working on the gotham problem and make sure that bruce also reaches his goal (tho i'm sure he would be delighted if bruce just changed his mind until then). But he won't even tell bruce that.

And sure, there are other problems, bc they don't actually agree on their methods to save any city, even if it's not gotham (and it's not really just a matter of not agreeing about the murder stuff, tho dc writers have been writing khoa and bruce's conflict focusing just on that aspect since tynion left the chat) but you can't tell me things would've happened the same way had bruce known all of this. He throws some pretty harsh words at khoa to make him leave him alone and almost immediately kinda regrets it; most of it comes from the fact that bruce has spent years trying to find proof that khoa's cares about anything (about him!) and having khoa denying it repeatedly, sometimes hurting other people to prove his point (if this sounds like a lot of bruce's other relationships, part of it is bc he has a type and part is bc he has a big heart full of hope, mind you). By the time argentina happens, khoa has almost managed to convince him he's right (he might even be fully convinced at the time, tho we know he must have changed his mind later when he tries to mend things with khoa asking him to join batman inc. the first time).

He might not have accepted khoa's offer anyway even if he knew all of this... and I wouldn't go so far as saying their relationship would've been any better than it was.... but bruce might not have burned the bridge between them that day. Bruce might never had said "You're sick. There's a part of you that's broken and you're angry that it's not broken in me". Their divorce could have been more amicable. It might not have lasted 20 years.

Just imagine, a batman story where everything is the same, except he and ghostmaker text regularly and even get to work together every once in a while over the years (much to dick's distress). You can't, because khoa never tells bruce shit unless it's some highly encrypted stuff that might impliy something if you look at it in a certain angle through rose colored lenses under a full moon in july.

The Batkids doing something considered rebellious and Bruce is unimpressed because "been there, done that" headcanon :

Damian runs away and sleeps under a bridge at some point -> Bruce did it at nine years old.

Tim gets piercings (bonus : Kon pierced him) -> Bruce had his nipples pierced by Minkhoa back in the days.

Jason gets home smelling of weed -> Bruce didn't only taste foreign food around the world when he was training...

Steph gets a mohawk -> Bruce had a bright pink mohawk at some point to piss Alfred off.

Dick anonymously starts an OF -> Bruce may or may not have leaked his own sextapes (yes, multiple) for "legitimate Batman-related" reasons.

Cass accidentally joins a cult -> Bruce and Minkhoa competitively founded a cult to see who would get to be the ultimate guru.

Duke finds himself in custody for whatever silly reason really -> Bruce went to prison (more than once) (in different countries) (for terrible motives) (he's still blacklisted in some of those countries)

They might as well be morning greetings, or kisses good night, or a simple touch between friendly hands. But. Harvey notices and he calls it out and seems hurt Bruce didn't even consider to hint at them.

" I didn't think it'd be important. He does way worse to way better people."

" I know. I'm there for it. Doesn't make this okay," It's not that big, it's what gets Harvey, personally. They're just small and deep. Brutal for the fun of brutal.

" You know I used to lock up guys like him. And 7 out of 8 times, this won't end well for you."

" no one has it good," Bruce hums, and pours himself a glass of brandy.

He mixes sugar in it. He hasn't touched a glass since he was 14, and Alfred found him dead drunk in his papa's study, their funeral not even a day old. " Not in Gotham. "

" So it's not good with me, is what you're saying" Harvey aims for humor, but it's been a while since he joked around with anyone, let alone pretty, tortured, gilded Bruce wayne.

Bruce shakes his head, " It's good BECAUSE it's you. "

Just thinking about Bruce back at that place, back to Khoa, - and whenever he elopes nightly, or weekly, or monthly with Harvey? He never feels a crumb of guilt.

He never thinks of his parodical husband once. When Khoa touches him, or kisses him, he fees guilty because of HARVEY

Weekly Comic Rec 1:

Heya, so I've been absent for a while on tumblr because I've been trying to find somewhere to live (extremely stressful, we were messed over by multiple places which caused me and my partner to have to move in with family for a bit after two places fell through even after we had paid the deposit on them 😥) but it's all sorted now and I'm moving into a new place in two days!!

Anyway!! This comic rec is for Batman: The Knight which is a phenominal prequel story about bruce in his teens and early twenties training all over the globe and finding his skills he later uses as batman.

It is also a great look into Ghostmaker (Minkhoa Khan) and his relationship with Bruce. If you don't want to go through the batman issues that introduce Ghostmaker (Batman (Vol. 3) #100 is his introduction issue.) then this is a really great way to see his character for the first time.

I personally really enjoy the art, and the writing is very engaging and easy to get through. Each issue is a really good length and finishing an issue on it's own is quick and satisfying.

Each cover for each issue shows the bat symbol in some way, like a looming threat of who bruce will become, a hanging blade ready to fall for the duration of the run. It's also great characterisation for bruce, unlike some issues recently where he acts like an irredeemable monster, he feels very grounded and full of heart like he is meant to be, but still misguided and stunted emotionally in his thoughts and motivations to some degree.

I own the hardback cover of the compendium eddition and its absolutely gorgeous, a great run to read if you are struggling to find somewhere to start with batman comics. Prequels are just a great option for that.

Honestly a 9/10 from me and a massive comic rec. It's all online and available to read so if it's something you might like please go check it out!

DC’s Ghostmaker

DC’s newest superhero and Batfam member, Ghostmaker has been drawn to a noticeable brown skin. Now, the author of when he first appeared hasn’t confirmed is a POC superhero. He might be Asian given how his pants are traditionally associated with Turkish and Indian pants, but that could also be an aesthetic choice. However, I have come to see Ghostmaker as Turkish and Muslim. So, in future posts, I will be placing him as an Asian, Arab, Disabled, LGBT, and Muslim super.

EDIT: He’s Singaporean and his name is  Minkhoa Khan.
