Toon Zelda redesigns! I've never been fond of the Toon Zelda design, and these girls deserve some individuality. Design notes and rambles below the cut :D
(time to turn the proper grammar off i aint capitalizing all this. warning: i am verbose)
first up, tmc zelda!
shes the one most like toon zelda, since i felt like the vibes fit the *most* (though not a lot). also, with her place on the timeline, i could justify a lot of bits, like the wings and the cape
the cape! obvs it comes from the toon zelda base design, but also it involves skyloftian fashion! i take the timeline as a challenge, and i once saw a take somewhere that the skyloftians all wear their family crests (most often birds lol) on their person. zelda here (and link too) do just that, wearing their family crests on little caplets. on the back is, of course the royal crest
i went very cutesy princess for her. tmc has such a *whimsical* vibe that i feel is very. muted? by the fact its stuck with the toon style. so i wanted to put in that vibe here. also her sprites make it look like her skirt is super poofy, so how could i not?
curly hair: i wanted something interesting, and most zeldas have straight hair. so! adds to the cuteness
i didnt draw it so well but she (and link) both have very sleepy expressions. zelda especially just has a sleepy expression in her sprite, its quite adorable.
shes not as decked out as other princesses, cuz i see tmc taking place before the royal family really starts to get *royal* as we see it. shes still of course got a tiara and some embroidery tho.
Tetra! her base design isnt all that changed from the original. her name is a fun hc of mine tho. i think "von Hyrule" sounds better as a surname than just "hyrule". shes not zelda, but shes still a descendant.
(WW) princess z (as i call her)
I went more oot zelda vibes for her, since she would be closer, temporally, to oot. i also went very warm, since ive never seen the flood as a *warm* endeavor.
shes got the shoulder danglies, as most zeldas have shoulder armor of some kind. the danglies instead of actual armor are supposed to kind of evoke a royal sea captain kind of vibe.
shes ghostly, with a fish-eyed stare. shes been dead and gone for a long time. shes also a bit taller and a few years older than tetra (as of ww). shes just some spectre the king saw in tetra, not at all a close match
tetra, being smaller than princess z, doesnt fit into the clothes. the dress is too big for her (as is in canon gd that skirt is WAY too long for her), the coat is baggy. the role of a princess *literally* does not fit her.
the ribbons! theyre my replacement for the wings, and they represent the wind in the game! since its represented by white lines, the ribbons are a perfect symbolic match. (also, a note, tetras hair is shorter and coarser than princess z's)
i mostly bullshitted the blue panel but the vague idea i gave it was 'a hope for the triforce to give good fortunes to the people' (pictured as dots, mostly behind her arms)
Pirate Queen Tetra
ph! about a year has passed, and tetra has really grown into her own! as well as literally grown!
shes still tetra, pirate and captain, but shes incorporated that royal heritage into her identity: quite literally! she made piecemeal of the original outfit (what was left of it anyway after the fight), and added bits and pieces to her new life.
she also takes full advantage of said heritage to call herself pirate queen. its great for branding. whos gonna say she CANT go by pirate queen?
the seagull feather is from Aryll. only crew member tetra wears a trinket from (who can say no to that ball of sunshine! certainly not tetra)
not many notes. yall can see whats there. (also she still wears her hair in a bun, its just in a low bun (you can almost see it) when she wears her hat)
st zelda!
first note is: shes not a princess! shes an heiress of the company tetra had made and left behind. hence her title of Lady zelda. ("new hyrule" rly just like-- the ending of ww was *literally* that hyrule is dead and thats okay. how did they miss that :sob emoji:) also calling her Lady Zelda fits with the train vibes
shes in a 1880s style bustle dress because 1) i am OBSESSED with bustle dresses. i love them. so much. 2) the more historical vibe works really well with trains! also a lot of the other outfits in the game have late victorian vibes, so shes certainly not out of place.
her hat (and gloves): any proper lady has a hat on when going about town, however, when she gets body snatched, she pulled out her hatpin to use (ineffectively) as a weapon (she IS tetras great-great-granddaughter), causing her to lose her hat *and* hairdo.
shes still got the hatpin in her ghost form, too. she uses it to threaten people for funsies
Ribbons! on the topic of hairdo, her ribbons! visually tying her to tetras design, the ribbons here instead take on the image of train tracks, with her pin (on the left side) evoking a train engine. the pin also makes her look rich and girly. when her hair comes undone, this makes the ribbons all loose, like how the train tracks disappear in game. (the hat also kinda connects her to tetra)
thanks for reading :D i hope you liked reading this as much as i liked typing it

Echoes of Wisdom Headcanon Countdown
༺ Day 44▪︎ 55 Left
Minish Cap Zelda is an optimist - almost sickeningly so. Oftentimes, during his adventure, Link tries to be more like her so he can persist. Before that, he could get a bit grumpy. Although both were quick to pout (and Zelda the more emotional of the two), Zelda was always the quickest to recover. She could go from sobbing one minute to stubbornly clinging onto the bright side the next! And with Ezlo's never-ending snark, Link needed to be that person this time around...
Imagine Zelda's surprise when she watches this change through her dreams!

Trauma reactions/coping mechanisms headcanons for Zelda across the games I've played:
ALTTP Zelda: Primarily struggles with control issues due to repeatedly getting captured and having her agency undermined that eventually lead to the development of OCD. Has nightmares and flashbacks (mostly sensory and emotional, like feeling cold or constrained suddenly when triggered), as well as anxiety and depression; has PTSD. Additionally struggles because the people around her are in denial of their own trauma and refuse to talk about it.
OOT Zelda: Primarily struggles with a guilt complex and identity issues. Feels responsible for Hyrule's fall and is prone to guilt spirals. Due to her years as Sheik she struggles to fit back into her role as princess and often feels unmoored; personality traits of Sheik vs Princess Zelda blend together and she feels fake most of the time no matter what she does. Has PTSD from watching her father die, gets flashbacks and avoids reminders. Additionally struggles because her primary support (Impa) is now gone.
Minish Cap Zelda: Primarily struggles with dissociation and depersonalization. Being turned to stone has left her with feeling disconnected from her body and a persistent feeling of being unreal. Struggles to react to outside stimuli like cold, pain or hunger, gets hallucinations where her limbs seem too long or 'wobble'. Often struggles to remember she and the world are real and that time is moving. Has a tendency to slip into a fantasy world and lose herself in daysreams, a coping mechanism picked up while turned to stone. Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder. Has a chronic headache and mood swings. Also has issues with dependency, relying too much on others.
Skyward Sword Zelda: Primarily struggles with identity issues. As memories of her past life become increasingly common, she struggles to define her own identity, often feeling unreal, fake. Personality traits may suddenly appear or disappear. Also struggles with dissociation, has trouble grounding herself in the here and now and sometimes feels disconnected from her body. Focusing on physical sensations helps with that.
BOTW/TOTK Zelda: Primarily struggles with low self esteem, a guilt/martyr complex, and identity issues. She feels responsible for the fall of Hyrule and has survivor's guilt. Especially after TOTK she feels as if it's her job to sacrifice, that her primary worth is defined by how much she can suffer for other's sake. Feels guilty about feeling joy. Does not know how to define herself outside of her use to others, often feels like a puppet or automaton; struggles with dissociation/depersonalization. C-PTSD, depression; has a chronic headache and often experiences trembling, tension, sweating hands, heart palpitations, and other such physical symptoms of anxiety, though she rarely feels actively scared; a constant low level anxiety as baseline that she's unaware of.

Regressuary 2025 Day 20
“Link and Zelda don’t need caregivers. They have each other!”

Link and Zelda peered around the hedges of the Hyrule Castle Garden, watching for any guards who might be blocking the way. When the coast was clear, the princess motioned for Link to follow close behind as they sneaked across the archways. Not noticing in his regressed state, Link tripped on one of the cobblestones paving the grounds. Zelda whipped around and caught him, trying to quiet her concerns. She instead held his hand, guiding him through the maze.
As the greenery cleared, they arrived at their destination! The large, sculptural fountain stood before them, and not a soldier in sight. “C’mon! Last one to the water is a rotten cucco’s egg!” Zelda laughed as she ran to the marble basin, but Link quickly caught up to her and jumped in. She blew a raspberry back at him, as the young boy was too quick since a gown didn’t weigh him down.
Zelda sidled over the rim and into the water, the hem of her dress quickly absorbing the water. She waded through the fountain, and Link held her hand so she wouldn’t trip. Careful! Link signed with his free hand. I don’t want you hurt.
“I-I’m alright!” Zelda sighed, trying to figure out a way to make their sneaky playtime less cumbersome. Link bent down to see if he could do anything to remedy it, but the girl took the opportunity to splash Link in the face. She laughed so hard at his expression that she tumbled into the water, taking Link down with her. The two surfaced from the shallow water, Zelda clearing the water from her eyes and Link looking for his misplaced pacifier. The two laughed even harder, still splashing each other.
“What is going on here?!” A voice boomed from the entryway to the clearing, and Zelda’s attention was pulled to her father.

This one is mainly because her official art is way too similar to Spirit Tracks and Wind Waker Zelda and I'm already drawing 4 of those (Tetra and her princess version and ST Zelda and her ghost form) so maybe switching it up will make it stand out more.
Anyways here's her official art
Tumblr media
Here's her manga version
Tumblr media
Considering WW and Spirit tracks Zelda have the exact same clothing and style I think switching her with the manga version would work better

Two Small Children and a Forest
Gen, Minish Cap Link and Zelda as tiny kiddos, very cute: Zelda is lost after sneaking out to see the village outside of the castle. Fortunately, she is found by an equally small Link.
For March of the Zeldas day 2
Zelda sniffled quietly, the tiny picori clustered around her feet trying their best to reassure her despite their differing languages. She hadn't meant to go so far from the castle, she just wanted to see the town for a little bit, but she’d gotten lost and now she couldn’t even see the castle. She was lost, and the sun was starting to go down, and she’d be lost forever and found by bandits and captured and kidnapped.
One of the picori started squeaking loudly, and she sniffled again, looking over at the small creature, which was jumping up and down and calling out.
“Hello?” Someone, maybe a kid, called out. “Is someone out here?”
“Over here,” Zelda called, wiping her face off on her skirt and standing up, trying to brush the dirt off of her dress so she’d look a little more presentable.
“There you are!” A kid, probably about her age with fluffy blond hair. “Hello! Are you lost?”
Zelda sniffled again, nodding. “I just wanted to see the village for a little bit, but wandered too far and got lost.”
“Well, it’s pretty late, you can stay with me and grandpa tonight, then we can find your parents in the morning!” The kid nodded firmly, holding out his hand. “I’m Link! What’s your name?”
“Zelda,” she replied, taking his hand.
“Like the princess?” She nodded, and Link frowned. “Maybe Grandpa can send a letter or something, so your dad doesn’t worry.”
“Which way is your house?” She asked, realizing they were now alone in the clearing, the picori having vanished now that the two kids had met.
“This way! I snuck out, so grandpa will probably get mad, but thats okay cuz I met you!”
“That’s probably good enough to not get mad at,” Zelda decided, swinging their joined hands shyly.
So they set off on their way to Link’s house.
“Do you sneak out a lot?” Zelda asked, emboldened by the quiet walk.
“Not usually, just when the picori tell me to come see something. Usually, it only takes a few minutes and I can sneak back in. Usually, I ask first so he doesn’t worry.” Link pushed a branch out of the way and let her go through first before he went through and let it go. “We’re almost there!”
“I’m glad. It’s getting really dark.” Zelda glanced nervously up at the sky, rapidly darkening. “Are you sure your grandpa won’t mind me?”
“Nah.” Link stopped looking down and shuffling his feet. “I don’t really have any friends so I think he’ll be really glad I brought someone home.”
“I don't have any friends either,” Zelda admitted, squeezing his hand. “That’s okay! We can be friends now! I can sneak out again, or you can come to the castle to visit.”
“Yeah! We can be bestest of friends!” Link declared enthusiastically, pumping his fist. “But first we gotta get to my home where its warm and maybe Grandpa will have some soup leftover still!”
Right on cue, Zelda’s stomach rumbled. “That sounds nice.”
Link pulled her forward by her hand again, beaming back at her as he did. “It is nice! The soup’s really good! Come on!”
Link’s home came into view soon, light shining out of the window and an older man standing at the door staring out into the night with a lantern.
“Grandpa!” Link shouted, waving the hand that wasn’t occupied holding Zelda’s and breaking into a run, tugging Zelda along with him. “Hii!”
“Link!? There you are, my boy I was worried sick!”
They skidded to a stop in front of Link’s grandpa, and he hugged Link tightly.
“Sorry Grandpa, but the picori had something really important to show me,” Link said, wiggling out of his grandpa’s hold. “This is Zelda! She was lost. We’re gonna be the bestest of friends.”
Link’s grandpa looked to her, and Zelda waved shyly. “Well I’ll be. Your father has been looking for you all afternoon.”
Zelda shuffled her feet, staring down at them. “I know, I’m sorry. I just wanted to see the town and got lost.”
“Well, it’s too late to do anything about that now, and I was due to take a trip to the castle tomorrow anyway, I’ll just have to return you then. Why don’t you come in, maybe you can borrow some of Link’s clothes so you don’t have to stay in that dirty dress.”
“And she needs some soup!” Link insisted, tugging her after his grandpa as they headed inside. “Her tummy’s gotta monster!”
“Oh dear, that is a problem,” Link’s grandpa agreed, setting his lantern on a table and heading into a different room. “Good thing I was just planning on having an after-dinner snack.”
“Yay! Bedtime snack!” Link cheered, pulling her into what was probably a small kitchen. “You sit there! I’ll get bowls and spoons!”
Zelda obligingly let go of Link’s hand and picked one of the seats at the table to sit in. There were four, and she wondered why, there only seemed to be two people here.
Link was quick to set a beautiful metal bowl in front of her, and a matching metal spoon next to it. They were decorated with hammered flowers, beautiful and delicate. “This is our visitor set, grandpa has his own, and I’m not old enough to make my own yet, so I use my mom’s bowl and dad’s spoon.” He looked down, fiddling with his own spoon. “They don’t need them anymore, so I can use them.”
“My momma doesn’t need a bowl or spoon anymore too,” Zelda replied, trying to reassure him. “At least you can use them now!”
“Yeah! Grandpa says they put their hearts and souls into the sets, and when I use one of each I can feel some of that myself!”
“That’s really sweet,” Zelda decided, nodding. “I just have some jewelry dad says I’ll grow into when I’m older. It’s too big for me right now though.”
“Such dark talk at the dinner table,” Link’s grandpa said, setting a larger bowl with soup down on the table. “Let’s eat instead, it’s too late for such dismal topics.”
“Grandpa, what’s dismal mean?” Link asked, already starting to spoon some soup into his own bowl.
“It means…dark and dreary. Not very nice. Zelda, would you like some?”
“Yes please,” Zelda said shyly, not really sure what to do. Did she try and spoon some into her bowl like Link did? Did she ask someone else to do it for her?
Link’s grandpa solved the dilemma for her by reaching over to grab her bowl and spoon some in, then placing it back in front of her. “Try some, I think you’ll like it.”
Hesitantly she tried some, and decided she really liked it. It wasn’t much like what she usually had at the castle, more simple and homey, but she really liked it. “It’s really good! Thank you!”
“Grandpa’s really good at cooking,” Link added, talking with his mouth full.
“Link,” Link’s grandpa sighed, and Link looked a bit sheepish.
“Talking with food in your mouth is rude,” Zelda informed him. “And icky gross.”
"Sorry," Link apologized, thankfully after swallowing. "Sometimes I get excited."
"Good manners are very important," Zelda said importantly, reciting what her etiquette teacher told her regularly.
"Almost done there you two?" Link's grandpa asked, picking up his bowl and standing up.
Zelda scooped up a final bite, and politely swallowed before talking. "Yes, thank you, it was very yummy."
"Would you like me to get your bowl?" Link's grandpa asked. "Link can show you his closet and you two can find something that'll fit you well enough for tonight."
"Yes, thank you," Zelda said, handing her bowl to him.
Link did the same a second later. "Thanks Grandpa! Come on Zelda, the bedroom is up here!"
It was relatively small, with two beds and two doors that probably led to small closets. Link opened one, surveying the line of tunics and neatly folded pants. "Hmm… I usually just use one of Grandpa's shirts for sleeping and some pants. His shirts are the softest." Link reached in, taking out an oversized shirt and offering it to her. "Here! Feel!
Zelda obligingly reached out and felt it. It was very soft and nice. "It is soft."
"Here, you can have this one," Link said, handing it to her. I'll do… this one! Look it has a cool collar!"
He brandished the shirt at her, and she indeed saw that it had a cool collar.
"What about pants?" Zelda wondered. She might not fit in his pants, even if they were the same size.
"Hmm. Here's some looser ones that Grandpa keeps saying I'll grow into!" He handed those pants to her, then took his own pair. "You can change in my closet, I'll do it in Grandpa's closet."
"Oh okay," Zelda agreed, hugging the clothes to her chest.
"Just go in and close the door! Grandpa put some cool lights in them that light up when the door is closed. He says it's to deter moths and bats and stuff." Link hopped over to the other door, opening it as well. "I'll see you in a second!"
Zelda stepped into the closet, closing the door when Link did, alone in the darkness for only a second before pretty green dots lit up the ceiling. She was so mesmerized she almost forgot to actually get changed.
It was a little bit of a struggle to get out of her dress, and she might have torn it a little, but it could be fixed, and the new clothes were really soft and warm. Like wearing a hug.
Even if she had to sneak out and get lost again, Zelda decided she was coming back. If just to feel the warmth of the small home and have some of that yummy soup again.

Echoes of Wisdom Headcanon Countdown
༺ Day 13 ▪︎ 88 Left
Although the Zelda in The Minish Cap is the second instance of the Toon Zelda design, she comes much earlier in the timeline. Her dress is likely based on the one depicting an ancient princess in the stained glass of Hyrule Castle, which turns this design into a sort of "traditional" gown for the princesses of Hyrule. So, when the Zeldas in the Adult Timeline wear this dress (or a variation of it), they are dressed in ancient styles considered synonymous with their family. It's kind of funny, considering I always saw this Zelda as the least concerned with huge lore things such as Hyrulean history!

“Link regresses during a sleepover.” (feat. Zelda)
The pacifier Link has in this ficlet is modeled off of this one I found, and this is the Octorok plush!
🩷 Many thanks to @mcschnuggles for the prompts list! 🩷

Zelda and Link sit perched on the princess’ bed, the canopy adorned with delicate curtains, making the perfect makeshift tent. “So I was thinking we could-” Zelda notices the far-off expression on Link’s face. “Link? Is everything alright? Zelda waves her hand in front of the boy’s face, trying to get his attention. He waves back, smiling with childlike bliss. “Oh! I know what’s going on.” Zelda turns around to the vast array of plushies decorating her bed and picks a large, red Octorok plush. “I can tell you’re feeling young again. All you had to do was tell me!”
Link claps his hands and hugs the plush tightly, his face squishing into the soft material. Thanks! Link’s hand signs were less refined when regressed, like a child first learning to speak. I put my paci somewhere… Link hopped off the bed and scurried over to his knapsack, digging for his beloved gear. Once he found it, a brown and green pacifier adorned with the Royal Crest, he popped it into his mouth and started teething on it contentedly. He ran back over to the bed and belly-flopped onto it, looking at Zelda fondly as he laid on the pile of plushies.
“Is there anything you’d wanna do now?” The princess’ eyes scanned her room, looking for something age-appropriate for the two to do together.
Playtime with blocks! Link pointed towards the chest in the corner where Zelda kept not only her toys when small but also a stash of Link’s.
“Of course! Want to build a castle this time?” Zelda hopped off the bed and took out the bag of blocks, spilling them onto the wooden floor with a clatter.
Yeah! A castle in a castle. Link laughed, delighted by the idea of the castle equivalent of nesting dolls, and began building.
