I headcanon all those wood planks between roofs and Minish-size house entrances exist not just for gameplay's sake but also because in-universe people in Hyrule go out of their way to accomodate the Minish. It's a custom to leave little holes, little stairs, little bridges around your house for the Picori. While most people don't believe in the Picori, it's a tradition and important part of the culture by now.

Designer's Note: It was a deliberate choice not to provide backstories for the Ancient Sages, so we were concerned about minimizing the narrative noise potentially generated by designs that had too strong of a sense of individual character.
Regardless, we needed to convey the impression that “these are people who should be feared and respected.” We therefore approached their designs with an academic abstraction and focused on their masks as art objects. The sheer strangeness of these masks weakens the sense of the Sages as individual characters while hopefully drawing a mysterious connection to the technology of the ancient Sheikah.

A Parting, The Awakening, The Dreamer
This marks the end of my Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening series. I have plenty more character and monster illustrations to share, but this particular sequence needed to be kept together.

Been thinking about whether it'd be possible to fix Zelda's arc in TOTK while still having her transform into a dragon. imo the biggest problem with TOTK's writing of Zelda is the way it validates her self-sacrificial tendencies. In BOTW she was constantly encouraged to push herself beyond her limits, to deny herself for the sake of the kingdom, and in TOTK doing exactly that is the correct, noble decision that saves everyone; her very destiny even. (To be fair, despite framing Rhoam and the others as wrong, BOTW did also very much have shades of this. But TOTK makes it really hard to ignore.) The Light Dragon is cool in concept, but what it actually represents in canon leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
But because I enjoy figuring out how to solve (what I perceive as) narrative problems with as little deviation from canon as possible, I've been trying to come up with a way to preserve the dragon twist while also changing the arc. And I think probably the easiest way to do this would be to have the dragonification royally backfire. Make self-sacrifice the wrong choice.
While the game keeps repeating that the Light Dragon doesn't have Zelda's sense of self, I think it's fairly clear this is not entirely correct, since the Light Dragon shows up for the final fight against Ganondorf Dragon, and also all the crying of Zelda's memories. While the Light Dragon might not really be Zelda anymore, some sliver of her clearly still remains.
So, I posit: the Light Dragon wants to defeat Ganondorf. Ganondorf is below Hyrule Castle, and his essense has spread all across Hyrule in the form of gloom and monsters. The Light Dragon wants it gone, has the power of a god, and cannot comprehend things like 'people die when they are killed'. Throughout the story, while the primary threat remains Ganondorf, a major secondary one is the Light Dragon, whose indiscriminate attacks on the gloom and Ganondorf's monsters put everyone in danger and make the regional problems even more severe. Maybe, during the post-regional events quest climax, the Light Dragon targets Hyrule Castle so severely that it destroys Lookout Landing, which Zelda had worked so hard to build. Sure, the Master Sword is restored now, but at what cost?
And perhaps to top it off, it turns out that defeating Ganondorf is actually impossible without Zelda there, as herself. They need her, maybe for her powers, maybe because some research she left unfinished turns out to be the key to defeating Ganondorf (preferably the latter), whatever: they need her, as herself, but her sacrifice makes this impossible. So then it's off to find a way to change her back.
Of course, this is all very heavy canon divergence anyway, so it doesn't really work as an 'as close to canon as possible' fix, but it's a fun and interesting thought I think.

[Image: fanart for Tears of the Kingdom. It's a bust of Yona, drawn as a light-skinned human hijabi. Her clothes and headscarf are green, with golden jewelry resembling her canon jewelry; she has green eyes and is looking off to the right. End description.]

A papercraft commission of Zelda from Breath of the Wild/Age of Calamity, featured here with the Bow of Light! I had enormous fun cutting out both her swirling hair and the swirling shapes of the bow's decoration - extra-detailed shapes like that take a long time, but the end result is very satisfying. ^_^ And, of course, I'm always excited to make Legend of Zelda art!
