I’ve never really been an artist.

To get good at making art you have to practice.

But there’s a frustration to trying and trying and never being able to make your vision come alive. To seeing those who started after you excel while you’re left with scratched-out paper and seething envy.

Maybe you take a drawing class. Maybe you even excel. But the moment you’re trying to create something original and true? Scrap.

Practicing without skill is painful and I wish that were talked about more.

But skill cannot be gained without practice—without pushing through that pain.

How do I diagnose the issue? Is it a lack of discipline? Of patience? Of a certain eye for form and detail? Or just the sincerity that lets a silly little doodle become transcendent.

I fear that I might simply lack the artist’s soul.
