Ever since he graduated from college and lost his parents, the world has been rushing by Dean Winchester faster than a high-speed train. He's tabled his dreams of being a published writer to edit others' work at a press in D.C., and although he keeps trying to finish his manuscript on the side, he's stuck in a perpetual loop of writer's block. And then there's the issue of his love life. For the same amount of time that he's been standing still, he's been in love with his roommate, Cas Milton. Cas works for Amtrak and spends his time traveling both D.C. and the country, and more often than not, his outlook on the future is more positive than Dean's. Despite the fact that they devote most of their time to each other, Dean knows the truth: one day, Cas will find the person he's truly meant to spend his life with, and he'll ride that train off into the proverbial sunset, leaving Dean behind. Cas comes home tonight.

Cas comes home /tonight/, and Dean can’t wait. They’ve talked every day, of course they have, but it’s not the same. The apartment feels too big and so empty, and Dean wishes Cas were here to rip open the junk mail and read it in a funny voice or posit, for the thousandth time, that they should get a cat.

(Dean is allergic. Cas claims the place is “one species short.”)

But maybe it’s better that Cas isn’t here, in a way. Usually, Dean is able to handle the way he feels, especially since he’s felt this way since the first night, like Cas would be important and was going to /mean/ something. But as the country has stretched between them, the feeling has started to press into his ribs, painfully, and every time Cas’s name shows up on his phone, he simultaneously scrambles to answer and resists.

He has to get up and go to work.

Dean pulls himself out of bed and stumbles toward the kitchen, where his coffee maker is waiting. He’s used to having breakfast with Cas, sitting on either side of the smooth oak kitchen table; Cas always makes a face at Dean’s mug and makes himself tea instead.

He turns on the coffeemaker (he had the foresight to prep the coffee beans and water the night before, something he always aims to do but doesn’t happen every day) and opens the fridge, inspecting its contents. Tomorrow, they’ll probably have to go to the grocery store; since it’s just been Dean, it’s a little bare. There are still some eggs left, though, so Dean grabs the carton and decides to fry a couple up. He locates a slightly brown banana and cuts it into slices to go on the side while he waits for the coffee to brew.

If Cas were there, they’d listen to the public radio station while they eat, on low volume so they could still talk. Cas says it’s important to stay updated on the news, and Dean doesn’t disagree, but it’s nice to not hear about how everything around the world is going to shit for once.

James: How did it go

Ariadne: *sighs* not great. The principal made me feel small, the teacher sprung exams on me and some girl made fun of my hair

Milton: I think your hair is pretty

James: I taught a lot of teens. Often they will pick something random to make fun of, something that isn’t actually bad, they just make you think it is. Did you do your hair yourself

Ariadne: *quietly* Just the colour. I went to a proper place to get it cut

James: We can get you a salon appointment to maintain the colour if you like but do it for you, not because some girl had an issue. If you like to dye it yourself, keep doing it

Ariadne: Thanks James. Oh and I met Carson, he seemed nice

James: Harvey’s youngest? I haven’t met him myself but I’ve met the next oldest. The brothers don’t get along from what I hear but the family are nature loving so he could be a good friend option

Ariadne: I hope you don’t mind but I invited some kids over after dinner. Hopefully they can be friend options to

James: This is your home, invite over all the friend options you want

Milton: Good thing you didn’t invite them before dinner

Alexander: I’m home! Did you tell her?

James: Ah. Well we want to properly welcome you so Alexander’s sister and her family will be coming for dinner

Rahul assures her it's fine and talk turns to an alternative dinner plan.

Ariadne: The spice festival is on, do you think you could eat something from there

James: Good idea. How about we go out instead?

Twins: YES

Everyone manages to find something they can swallow at the festival even if the lighting is being stupid! Looks like Devin is gracing us with her presence and a performance!!! No one tell her my lighting is this bad. The lack of proper light does send us home pretty quickly though. Ariadne has invited some kids from school after all and Joey is going to come for a game or two.

Scarlett: Damn girl your house is massive

Ariadne: What can I say? Rich parent perks

Rodger: My household is the same size as yours, cats included, and we live in a relative shoebox

Ariadne: Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to come across as-

Rodger: It’s fine. Everywhere is a shoebox compared to this place

Ariadne: You’re not utterly disappointed in me?

Scarlett: *laughs* Nope. Girl I'd brag about it to

Rodger: What can I say? You give us something to aspire to

The trio burst out laughing and Ariadne feels like she could finally be making some friends.

Joey: Zooming by on your left

Alexander: Hey that was an illegal driving move

Milton: Alexander, there’s no illegal driving moves in this game

James: Hurry up love, I’m going to lap you soon

Alexander: I don’t get how you’re all so good at this

Joey: Practice and technical know how. Hey, who threw that banana?

James: It was Milton

Milton: It was not me, Uncle James is lying

Joey: It’s okay Milton, I believe you

James and Milton leave once the game is over and Alexander takes the opportunity to talk to Joey.

Alexander: You know how James and I have adopted Ariadne?

Joey: I haven’t got a proper introduction but yeah

Alexander: I need to know you won’t sleep with her

Joey: Dude! She’s a teenager. I like to screw but I don’t have a screw loose

Alexander: I know but she won’t always be 13 and I don’t need you laying on your charm and breaking her heart, ever. No matter how hot she may grow up to be, don’t sleep with my daughter

Joey: What if she makes a move on me once she ages up? You know boobs distract me

Alexander: You drag your eyes up and say, no thank you, your dad is one of my best friends and I will not cross that line

Joey: Agreed, I’m never going to sleep with any kid of yours... I did want to woohoo your mum though

Alexander: *laughs* I knew it!

With Joey heading home Alexander goes and makes sure Milton is heading to bed. Milton is actually busy talking to his friends online though…

Alexander: Come on, bedtime. How are you getting on with Mum’s journals

Milton: *sighs* fine. I wish she was here to tell me abut her life instead of me needing to read it

Alexander: I miss her to Milton, every day

Milton: You don’t think she’d be mad I’m reading them do you?

Alexander does his best to assure Milton it’s fine and get the boy to sleep. In her room Ariadne has said goodbye to her visitors and is trying her luck at the flower arranging table. She planted some but has quite a few left over to play around with.

Alexander: So Mr Dad how are you doing

James: *chuckling* I’m good, really good. Ariadne seems to be settling in although she had a rough day at school

Alexander: She told you that? That's not great but I guess that’s better than lying to our faces. We should do something this weekend to cheer her up

James: Did you have something in mind

Alexander: She’s a teen girl so… shopping?

James: Do you just want to go shopping

Alexander: *laughs* Maybe, but her being honest with us should be rewarded right?

James: You are going to be a much better dad than you think love

The household falls into slumber and we leave them for now.

That’s why, while she possesses acting prowess, she cannot come up with any good fake names. (Like “Lady Varanda” in the “Mistletoes and Misfits” bonus, but that was also a reference to Winx Club.)

Background info: I considered giving her a middle name (after her grandmother Genevieve), but decided against it, as she does not seem to have one in canon. (Otherwise, I guess, she might have been listed with an initial like Cedric.)

Background info: I picked “Kristopher” at random (it was the first name that came to my mind) and “Underwood” without much extra thought except that it’s sort of “similar” to “Undertaker.” I later thought that Cloudia might have rather given him “Sowerberry” as a surname because that’s the name of the undertaker in Oliver Twist. Now, I’m happy with my choices because they worked out decently in the end for various reasons.

He sleeps only four hours a day in two-hour stretches. (He cannot sleep longer because of his nightmares.) Wentworth also has to persuade him to sleep at all.

Background info: I regret a bit giving him “Salisbury” as a surname because “Earl of Salisbury” and “Marquess of Salisbury” are actual titles.

Kamden was in Weston College’s Blue House. Barrington was a bit disappointed that he could not get into Green House. He was also someone’s fag at Weston.

Background info:

He is based on the “astrological twins” concept mentioned in Erich Kästner’s Lisa and Lottie (Das doppelte Lottchen).

His surname was picked as a “opposite” to “Phantomhive,” and taken from Melancholia St. Clair from Skulduggery Pleasant. (The same applies to his birth surname “Bonham,” though I got that one from Behind the Name.)

His adopted parents’ names (Phyllis and Frederick) are taken from a Skulduggery Pleasant fanfic I wrote a long time ago (they were the fake names I gave to two canon characters). His biological parents’ names (Linette and Edmund) come from The Infernal Devices. Linette Herondale in that series is Welsh, as was Kamden’s mother.

Kamden’s birth surname was “Glendower-Bunker” (“Glyndwr-Bunker”) for a while before I changed it. I thought giving someone the surname “Glendower” was just too much, but “Llywelyn” is also a regal name.

Background info: He was originally called Albert; his name was changed to avoid an overlap with Prince Albert’s. He was instead named after Alfred Pennyworth (though he still overlaps name-wise with a member of the BRF: one of Victoria and Albert’s children, Prince Alfred).

She likes borrowing Newman’s romance books. It horrifies him a bit, but he still lends them to her.

Background info:

Lisa was set to be a talented pianist, but I forgot about that aspect early on. Maybe this will find its way back into the story one day?

I wished I had made her a bit older. (But not too old, as I wanted her to be close-ish in age to Cloudia.)

Generally, she dislikes every form of physical exertion, but, when she was younger, she enjoyed walking through fields for hours whenever her father wanted something from her.

Her mother died not long after giving birth to her. Her father began considering remarrying a few years later; however, Cecelia shooed everyone away, and he eventually gave up.

Michael liked spending a lot of time outdoors, and for the few years they were married, Cecelia did as well. Michael’s clumsiness and unluckiness often resulted in some minor disasters which sometimes rendered him injured and forced them back indoors anyway.

Background info:

I wished I had given her and Michael either a better surname or a proper title. “Marquess/Marchioness of Williams” just seems oddly casual.

I considered making her a fat character but scrapped the idea because it did not work with her backstory. (I also wanted to avoid the “of course, the character that doesn’t like exercising/moving is fat”-thing.)

Simon’s mother Genevieve set up a “playdate” between Simon and Barrington after Simon beat Barrington in a fencing tournament. While Barrington’s mother Wilhelmine agreed to the get-together, she later regretted her decision because she thought Simon was too much trouble. (And he and Barrington did get into a lot of trouble, even before Simon became Watchdog.)

Barrington and Samantha were an oddly matched couple as they are complete opposites. (They did, however, have a very happy marriage.)

Background info:

He was named after two villainous characters (Barrington Whelk from The Raven Boys and the Duke of Weselton) simply because I liked the names.

Barrington is a secretive character, and one I haven’t fully cracked yet.

It is a Livingstone family tradition that the first son is given his father’s name as his middle name. His grandparents wanted Oscar to have his legal father’s name as his middle name (Ranald) because of that, but his mother protested. Oscar ended up without a middle name as a result.

Oscar used to have auburn hair as a child, but it darkened to black as he grew older.

Background info:

Very early on, Oscar was set to be 70 years old, a former police commissioner, and missing a few fingers.

I considered Charles Rowan’s military career while settling on Oscar’s.

Oscar was named after Oscar from Sesame Street (whose German name translates to “Oscar from the Trash Can.”)

He was the fag of Sapphire Owl’s prefect, but never succeeded him as dormitory leader. (He made sure that his upperclassman would drop him as his fag when he became prefect to prevent becoming prefect himself. Barrington wondered why Simon didn’t just decline to be the dorm leader when it was time.)

He had the tendency not to carry around any umbrellas, even if it was very clear it would rain, or when it was raining. (And they do live in England too.) It frustrated both his mother and Barrington. (Penelope was taken aback by that bad habit, but Simon did always carry an umbrella with him when she was around.)

He was named after Simon Harley-Dickinson from The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place (he is the love interest of the protagonist Penelope Lumley after whom Penelope was named).

Simon is an artist because of Simon from The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. (Simon Harley-Dickinson is also an artsy character, but he’s a playwright, not a painter.)

I wished I had written him better in “Festivity and Fear”; I hope I can rectify this one day.

Animals like her, and she likes animals. She currently does not keep any pets though and also did not have any growing up.

She was named after Penelope Lumley, the protagonist from The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place.

Her parents’ names (Hortense and Edward) were taken from that series too; they are the names of her namesake’s employer’s parents. Unlike Hortense Houghton, Hortense Ashton is a nice person though, and Edward Ashton decidedly is not, whereas Edward Houghton was.

Over on vinyl Instagram they asked for a collaboration between artists from different cultures. I went with the bossa nova classic Getz/Gilberto, one of those perfect top to bottom albums with every element in the exact right place. This collaboration between the North American Stan Getz and the South American superstars João Gilberto and A. C. Jobim (not to mention the incredible Milton Banana on drums) reinvigorated the bossa nova trend in the States, rescuing it from “flash in the pan fad” status in the eyes of USAmericans.

• when she married callum & took his surname, she moved her last name to her middle mame to "americanize" herself while also respecting her culture

• was often shortened to just michelle by non-family members tho

• bilingual, grew up speaking spanish. practices with callum (multilingual) some to help him sound more like a native speaker

• military father, moved around alot before settling down in dialtown, wisconsin 

• first met callum when she interviewed him for the towns paper after he became a door to door salesman, also having viewed him as a town oddity but was allured by his freakish nature

• was a really good journalist and knew how to extract information, naturally charming, a bit flirty even

• callum was just as charismatic and returned the playful banter, only agreeing to an interview if he could ask questions in return

• got along really well and always had a bit of tension, ramping up their relationship subtly and knowing just how to make the other flustered

Swap AU make my pea-sized brain ping around my head like one of those brick breaker games.

Mathis was on a flight to Great Bear to visit his son in prison. He booked a flight with Archer Remote Transport, flying with a serious woman named Molly who doesn’t seem to particularly like him. Their plane goes down, and he finds himself in a quiet apocalypse.

Molly is a pilot who hunts in her spare time. After her husband died in mysterious circumstances, she’s generally regarded with suspicion by the people around her, and it weighs heavily on her.

Astrid is a doctor in the small town of Thompson’s Crossing. Shes taken over the community centre as a clinic. She would go out and search for crash survivors, but the people here need all her attention.

Mackenzie is a convict who recently got transferred to Blackrock. After one of his guys, a stern man named Jeremiah, got sent here, he got himself sent up to break him out. By the time he reached the prison, that had already happened, so he started searching the island for someone who could get them off it.

Heller takes Jeremiah’s position almost exactly.

Jace takes Methuselah’s position, but isn’t quite as cryptic about it and instead speaks in scientific terms that leave Mathis like “please have mercy I got a C in high school physics”.

Lilith Barker takes Jace’s place, ensuring that Donner doesn’t escape. She was climbing Blackrock mountain when the first flare happened, and when she saw from above what was happening, she rushed down to try to help.

Vachon takes Hobbs’s place but isn’t as obviously dead meat after his cutscene though. Hobbs is the guy who they mentioned got shot with arrows (who is Leclerc in canon).

Mackenzie, in spite of being a convict, isn’t actually a bad guy. He’s exceedingly practical, but he cares for his people, and when he learns Mathis is trying to get to Blackrock, he immediately agrees to help him. Then a faction conflict happens in Blackrock because some dudes are like “hey fuck you and fuck this guy from solitary you’re not the boss of me”. So Mackenzie wrestles with that and keeps them in line while Mathis goes to do all the quests.

The warden and Father Thomas sort of swap places except the warden ends up more in Molly’s position. He went off the deep end a bit with the fire and brimstone and most people stopped attending his services, which he resents them for. He kills the convicts because “it’s the will of the Lord”. Just fully cuckoo bananas with the religion.

Grey Mother is Mackenzie’s other henchman because I think epic gun grandma should get to commit crime and also hang out with Mackenzie more. It’s part of why in this AU, Donner does actually escape; because Lily gets distracted by her mom being there.

Methuselah goes where Grey Mother does. He has the player go look for buffer memories instead so they can write down the story of Milton because he doesn’t want it to die. They need to go to the farmhouse to get the key to the office, not the lockbox.

Father Thomas isn’t locked up (because in this AU, the convicts didn’t murder everyone bc the staff weren’t as horrible to them) but he is completely useless in sorting out the conflict in the prison. Just like “oh no, please don’t— oh no you’re doing it anyways :(“

Golden Brown - Weird Choices

“Weird Choices”, Stefan Beck’s third release with Inner Islands as Golden Brown, sees Beck taking decidedly different approaches from last year’s “Luminous”. Whereas “Luminous” featured a very guitar-centric palette, these new pieces focus on augmenting the familiar guitars with keys, synths, and electronics in favor of more spacey compositions. These tracks also grew out of experiments with compositional duration as Beck elaborates, “I started a practice of making these miniatures - one to two minute long songs that still felt fully formed and expressive but simple and concise.” Glass Frog, Larvae, Worm Charming, Milton Banana, and Busted Crystal were all realized under that intention. The longer pieces feature some of the familiar fingerstyle and slide guitar that listeners to Beck’s previous work may be acquainted with. These pieces, by and large, are layered improvisations that conjure floating moods, untether to the terrestrial. The final piece, Olas/Ondas, features a similar approach to the tracks on “Luminous” by using field recordings as a springboard for further extemporizations based on the feel and events of that space. In this case Beck used recordings from a trip to Anini Beach in Kauai to influence the gently cascading piece. The novel “The Actual Star” by Monica Byrne played a significant role in shaping the mental images and mood that Beck was feeling while recording the album. Beck explains, “part of the book takes place in a future where society collapsed from climate change and had to be adapted/reformed by those who survive. The way they live in that future is through near constant global migration, stopping in refuges along the way for shorter periods of time. It sounds kind of bleak but is actually a more hopeful vision of the future than what our current trajectory looks like.” And related to these ideas of possible imminent futures, the title of the album acknowledges our present; he says it encapsulates “all the maddening aspects of daily life in the last few years that we have to process and compartmentalize just to go about our daily business. Do I choose to go about my day like normal in spite of the ongoing escalating climate crisis? How do I respond in my daily life to the erosion of our civil rights and rising fascism? Do I see my loved ones in spite of an ongoing pandemic? I guess the phrase just kind of stuck with me as we have come to accept as normal circumstances that are anything but.”

When one takes two formidable creative forces and joins them together, well what do you expect will happen? CREATIVITY!

Dianne Pearce and David Yurkovich met when Dianne's dog placed a print ad for a walking buddy. Since that time they have gone on to establish CURRENT WORDS an alternative publisher created to help authors bring their manuscripts to completion and, ultimately, publication. Current Words is NOT a vanity press - rather it built on relationship building. Simply put-  does a particular project fit with the goals of CURRENT WORDS and is CURRENT WORDS the right place for the work? Publishing predicated on relationships - an old fashion notion that is so relevant in the AI dominated world.

Both Dianne and David are accomplished authors. David began his writing career by writing and illustrating graphic novels. His first published work was DEATH BY CHOCOLATE. His DBC stories were later published in a collected edition as DEATH BY CHOCOLATE: REDUX. He is the creator of the quirky graphic novels super-hero collection LESS THAN HEROES. His other works include ALTERCATIONS, the novels GLASS ONION and BANANA SEAT SUMMER. He is currently serializing two works on Kindle Vella: NEW SANTA | CRIMSON RED and CAPES AND MASKS.

Dianne is an award-winning author, editor, writing coach, teacher, and publisher who has helped hundreds of authors in their goal of publication.
