Chapter I- Operation Sparrow
CAPTAIN MELODY NASIA
I steal a quick glance at the message I sent hours ago as the car zooms forward.
2400, Fort Maym, Lot 6
This is the one piece of information that I slaved six months for. How annoying how a single strand of knowledge can take so long to uncover, and much more annoying is the fact that I had to be the one to uncover it. Not that they made the wrong choice in me, I am perfect for the job. But months of undercover work do not sit well with me.
I send the message, eager to get this whole debacle over with. The team has been prepared for this moment for six months now, and I am certain they will be ready for the task at hand. What I mean is, they better be ready. I did not spend the last six months sleeping in a pungent bed only to have this whole operation go sideways.
The rest is in their hands now though, I have done my part.
Six months, that is how long it took me to gain the trust of the higher-ups in Malevoles, a drug cartel infamous in Hilaganan for their high profile members and great contribution to the drug industry. After six months of toiling, toilet duty, goonism, and general minor evil henchman duties, I have finally gotten close enough to be in on the plans of the group. What a time joyously spent indeed.
Truth be told, I expected this whole task to be done in three, perhaps four months tops. But the organization had been tougher to infiltrate than expected. They had distrusted me from the get go. It is like that with all evil organizations, they do not trust their new recruits immediately. But I had a good record. Three counts of theft, two counts of felony, one count of assaulting a uniformed officer. What is not to trust in that? I had exactly what people looked for in a good and upstanding henchwoman.
Still, I was given the typical suspicious glare when I handed in my resume for the job. Well, to be honest, I did not hand in a resume, I handed in the man who was wanted for betraying them, which is a wonderful way to get in their good books. And despite that. I only managed to get their confidence by taking down a branch of an opposing cartel. Not that I minded, it was taking down two birds with one stone. I got to gain Malevoles’ trust, and I took down a pest to society. Just like that, my rank rose like the tide on a full moon.
What I did mind, however, was the rough conditions that this particular cartel have their accomplices living in. I mean, can they not afford any lodging better than a room occupied by six people? five of which smell like they have taken a dip in a vat of pure sweat? Surely the situation could have been better. You cannot expect your henchmen to function properly if they are all being assaulted by their peers’ body odor. I certainly was not happy to be part of that.
But no matter. It all ends today.
I sigh inwardly, grateful that I no longer have the humiliation of sleeping in a metal bed with no warm comforters and soft pillow.
I look at my two other companions in the car. I am in the back seat, strapped in. The two, however, are forgoing the use of their seatbelts, a move generally thought of to be dangerous and is specifically advertised against by car manufacturers around the world. Not that I mind, it will make my job easier for me.
I sent that message a little while ago. The troops should have assembled by now. It is only one hour to go before midnight, and I must get to the fort before then.
Well, not MUST, but I would most certainly like to witness the fruit of my labor. Having spent six months with these people, I simply cannot wait to witness their villainry end right in front of my eyes.
Very well then, time to dump these two and get going.
We are driving at 180 km/h, just what I need for my plan to succeed.
“What is that?” I ask in a worried tone.
“What’s what?” lackey number one, the driver, asks in return.
I grip my seatbelt tight, but all the while pretending to approach them to point at something.
Surreptitiously, I reach for the emergency break handle.
“What are you talking about woman? There’s nothing there!” says lackey number 2, looking for the phantom object I am pointing at.
Here goes.
“Oh no matter. It is simply your impending demise. It was nice riding with you, gentlemen,” I say in a whisper.
Then I pull the break as hard as I can.
It took longer for them to register what is going on than it did for them to fly in their seats. The wheels squeal due to the sudden halt. The car spins out of control, skidding to the side of the road. I can hear glass shattering. I can hear the airbag explode open, attempting to save the dear lives of lackeys one and two.
Now, I know pulling the emergency brakes when going 180 is not healthy, seatbelt or not. And so I start muttering an incantation, surrounding myself in a bubble of protection as the general chaos takes place outside the car.
I can see the bodies of lackeys one and two fly around as the car flips over a few times, I myself safe in my bubble, patiently waiting for all this to be over with. Some slight discomfort with being tossed around, but all in all I am fine.
Thankfully, it takes all of one minute for the crash to reach its conclusion. The car stops at the side of the road, upside down, wheels still turning.
It is not a sight to behold. The car is all dented, glass shattered, windshield completely obliterated. It looks like it has been rammed by several angry bulls.
Lackeys one and two somehow manage to stay inside, though unconscious and all battered up.
Now, I am not so heartless as to leave them here, not with the smell of gasoline and smoke somewhere, especially not when I see that they are both still breathing.
I undo my protection bubble, grateful to have this whole debacle over with before anyone can see me casting a spell.
I kick the smashed door open and exit the smoking relic of a vehicle. Though it does not please me to carry heavy loads and get bloodied up, I opt to set my preferences aside to save the poor souls. I force the front door open and pull their battered bodies out of the vehicle.
As per observation, lackey one, the tall but skinny one, is much heavier than lackey two, the short and bulky one. Not that that thought helps in pulling them out of that wreckage.
I heave and pull, dragging the two across the road, not very gracefully, might I add. I would not be in such a hurry, but the smoke is suspiciously getting stronger, and the gasoline is not going anywhere away from that smoke.
I manage to settle the two down a large rock when sure enough, our ride goes off. I was checking my former co-evildoers’ vitals when the car goes up in flames. Knowing full well what is coming next, I immediately put up a barrier just a millisecond before the vehicle erupts in a loud explosion. Debris fly everywhere, and the heat turns up a few notches. The flames from the burning/exploding car reach fifteen feet, high enough for someone far off to see.
Ah yes, just what I needed.
I take out the watch I have been keeping in my pocket. I turn it on, relieved to see it survived the crash and six months of not being in use. And truth be told, I do miss using this little trinket.
I click a few buttons and a call is placed.
“Sparrow to Nest, Sparrow to Nest,” I state.
“Come in Sparrow,” says a reply from the watch.
“Personnel number 4825937. I have accomplished the last part of my mission. Requesting for pick up.”
“Copy that Sparrow. Please state your location.”
“Diversion highway, en route to Fort Maym. You see a flaming car and that is where you shall find me.”
“Copy that Sparrow. Transport is on your way to pick you up. Standby.”
“Well, I have nowhere else to go, do I?” I jokingly say.
I hear a chuckle from the other side.
“Welcome back Captain Nasia,” says the respondent.
“Glad to be back in the loving arms of the country, officer,” I reply.
I end the call and sit down beside lackeys one and two, doing a little stretch while I wait.
And now we wait. My work here is done.

So, You Wanna Write A Solarpunk Thriller
Based on the blog I wrote yesterday about conflict in Solarpunk stories and how people either don't understand how stories work, have never read a book, or plainly act more dumb than they are. Because, yes, you can in fact tell almost any sort of story in a Solarpunk work - without resorting (like, sadly, way too many writers do) to "Actually the utopia is a lie and Solent Green is people!"
Meaning: If you need a "dark secret in society" to have a conflict in your story, you have a skill issue.
But let's talk about the genre that usually comes with those kinda dark secrets. While not necessary for the genre per se, it is a common trope here. Thrillers.
Ironically we all have some picture in our heads what a thriller might be - even though it might be one of the most loosely defined literary genre. Though probably we will think first of some movies.
The top 10 thriller movies according to this list on IMDB, the top ten thrillers are:
Seven (Police/Crime)
Silence of the Lambs (Police/Crime)
Shutter Island (Psychological)
The Sixth Sense (Supernatural)
Zodiac (Police/Crime)
Inception (Crime)
North by Northwest (Spy)
Identity (Psychological/Crime)
The Game (Financial)
The Prestige (Psychological/Crime)
Something you will note to your surprise: None of those actually feature a central conflict based on the society having a dark secret. In fact half of them are basically just Mystery movies with higher stakes (which is what turns them from mystery/crime drama to thrillers).
In fact I would argue that at least half of those movie plots could be rewritten fairly easily to take place in a Solarpunk world without any problem. Like, sure, The Game would not work, because this story very much is build around capitalism existing. And one could argue how those stories, where the main character is a cop need to be changed (because I know that my vision of a solarpunk does not involve cops).
In fact, going through the list of those 50 movies in total, I count a total of 6 movies in which a government conspiracy is part of the central conflict. Out of those 6 movies 4 are Cyberpunk.
Generally speaking, there is a variety of concepts for thrillers. There is the police/crime thrillers, but others as well. Wikipedia lists those kinds of thrillers:
The legal thriller, spy thriller, action-adventure thriller, medical thriller, police thriller, romantic thriller, historical thriller, political thriller, religious thriller, high-tech thriller, military thriller.
And I might add, I am very much missing the psychological thriller in there.
So, what am I saying here?
Basically: All you need to write a thriller is high enough stakes. In the end, a good thriller works by the stakes being high (though what means "high" might also vary from subgenre to subgenre), and by the readers or watchers understanding the stakes well.
So, that said, let me go through the kinds of thriller we have named above and name one example each for how the story could be made solarpunk.
Legal Thriller: The easy example here would be the fight for a Solarpunk world. Either pre-Solarpunk and a group of environmentalists is taking a big company to court for what they did against the environment. Or in a Solarpunk future I could also see some former rich folks trying to bring down the Solarpunk society by trying to find loopholes in the legal system - and a group of lawyers fighting against it.
Spy Thriller: This one will depend a lot on how you construct a Solarpunk future. The easy answer here is a world in which not all of the world is solarpunk - and we basically have a cold war happening between the solarpunk state and the old world state. Works out fine.
Action-Adventure Thriller: A good chunk of the movies in these genre feature natural catastrophes. So... Uhm... An earthquake will still happen in a Solarpunk world - and people try to survive. Easy. Next?
Medical Thriller: Another easy one. There is a break out of a new pandemic. People work hard to prevent further spread. Bonus points: Here we can actually use the setting to show the advantages and the shortcomings of a Solarpunk society, that is an anarchic and socialist/communist society.
Crime Thriller: (I will say, no police, because I do not believe in Cops in Solarpunk.) Again, even though it is to be assumed that crime will go back a lot if we create an equal society, there will still be some people who will kill. And there might still be a serial killer. And there will be those, who will try to capture that serial killer. Again. Easy.
Romantic Thriller: Okay, let's face it. The romantic thriller is so watered down by now that it is "a thriller that also has a strong romantic subplot" for most of the part - rather than the romance being the source of the trilling elements. But for the sense of saying the actual "romance turning into a thriller"... Let's be honest. Even if we had a Solarpunk world in which polyamory was the norm, there would be still crimes of passion - and just plainly abusive partners. So, here my prompt: One partner in a polycule goes to a mental crisis. In the attempt to protect them, the polycule gets drawn more and more to violence.
Historical Thriller: Uhm, okay, I will leave this one out because historical and scifi setting do not quite gel xD
Political Thriller: We have a more anarchic world, but there are still some people who hold more influence, because old habits die hard. Some of them try to use political tools to get the world to revert into the old ways, just to gain more power for themselves.
Religious Thriller: Let's face it. This genre is often very close to horror. But to go with the non-supernatural way... No, I do not believe in forbidding religion in a Solarpunk future. However, there is the issue that religion will always make it easier for cults to form. So, this is the story of a young man who gets into the claws of a religious cult - but only realizes too late what he got into.
High-Tech Thriller: (Translate: SciFi Thriller) Alien, but Solarpunk. The only difference: There are in fact people trying to help. They just fail to do so.
Military Thriller: Like the spy thriller - but instead of cold war it is open war.
Psychological Thriller: I am going here with a parent who gaslights their adult child, while the adult child tries to differentiate reality from the fiction presented by said parent.
So, why did I do this?
Basically just to show you: If you really think the only story you can tell as a Solarpunk author is how the Solarpunk utopia is in fact an illusion made to paint over a corrupt system, then it is very much a skill issue. You just are not very good at telling stories.
Thankfully there is a cure for that: Consume more stories. Watch movies. Read books (or listen to audiobooks). Read comics. Watch shows. Just consume more media.

Heroes & Villains The DC Animated Universe - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Elseworlds Addendum - General Zod, Ursa & Non
General Dru-Zod was a celebrated military leader of the planet Krypton. His wartime campaigns were so successful that he had effectively ended conflict on the planet. Unquenched in his hunger for conquest, Zod looked to the stars and began plans to lead Kryptonian armies to conquer inhabited planets amongst the cosmos and usher in an imperial age of colonization.
These plans were dashed when the terrorist known as Jax-Ur destroyed Krypton’s moon. Efforts to develop a space fleet were scraped and an enraged Zod orchestrated a coup d'etat were he planed to situated himself as the supreme ruler of Krypton. The coup was put down and Zod himself was defeated and captured by Jor-El. For his crimes of treason, Zod was imprisoned, charged with a life-sentence in The Phantom Zone.
Ironically, Zod incarceration spared him from Krypton’s destruction. He would ultimately escape the Phantom Zone and came to earth to battle the son of Jor-El, Superman. It would be the first of many conflicts between the two Khryptonians and, to date, Superman has always emerged triumphant.
In the 1978 Superman feature film, General Zod was portrayed by actor Terrance Stamp. His character was allied with two coconspirators, a pair of lieutenants named Ursa (played by actress Sarah Douglas) and Non (Jack O’Halloran). In the comics, Zod and Ursa married and had a son named Lor-Zod who would go on to become a nemesis of Superman’s son Jon (Superboy).
General Zod first appeared in the pages of Adventure Comics #283 (April 1961); whereas the comic book versions of Ursa and Non debuted in Action Comics #845 (2007).
