Leo and Raph Arguing About Everything?

A Common Occurance In Rise?

Nah, that’s a ‘negative toxic trope’ that just happens in the movie because plot and insane stress and sudden role changes-

I DON’T THINK SO.

Even Donnie acknowledges it’s a classic them.

Not everything has to be toxic. Brothers argue, okay?

Especially the older ones.

Thank you, I really appreciate the amount of research you're putting into it! It's really super amazing aha, so interesting. I guess going further, which sibling "pairings" do you think have the *least* amount of chemistry/most amount of friction? Like I know that Don/Mikey are super close (and they do have a lot of duo episodes together) whereas Mikey/Raph are not as close because Raph keeps treating Mikey like a kid while Mikey wants his time to shine and there was supposed to be an episode delving into that before it got (sadly) canceled. Do you think that's true?

Once again, I think it depends. People grow, relationships change. I would kill to see that Mikey & Raph episode because I think it would have been a really cool examination of the two of them. The whole premise being they were really close *once* and have been drifting further *lately*.

So friction increases and decreases over time. I think Leo and Raph get along great operating with one brain cell (Hypno: Part Deaux, One Man's Junk, heck even Mind Meld in that scene with the pizza pigeon) but by the movie they are really butting heads over responsibility. As in, almost coming to blows over it in the lair.

And really, you can find an example for just about any pair where they're working really well together or coming to a head. Leo and Donnie square off in Lair Games, but work together throughout all of Operation: Normal. Mikey gets along with Donnie a lot, but was really stealing his thunder a ton in 'Shell in a Cell', and Donnie was not the most receptive to Dr. Feelings.

Overall; these boys love each other, and when push comes to shove they'll lay down their lives for each other. Back to Raph and Leo, we saw each of them do that in the movie, despite fighting each other earlier.

Nooooowww. From a writer's standpoint, if I wanted to explore tasty conflict and drama, it would be less about who exactly is paired with who, but moreso what ✨scenario✨ would cause friction between the two.

Raph & Mikey: (that promised episode nailed it) something that puts the Big Brother/Little Brother dynamic to the test. We might've also gotten to glimpse this in the Turtle Tot episode. Mikey growing up, pushing to be more independent. Raph wanting to protect him at all costs, because that's what he's always done.

Raph & Leo: after the whole 'leader' line, a scenario regarding how they each treat responsibility would be interesting. Trust could also be explored if you really lean into Leo's Machiavellian plans vs Raph's Straightforward approach. They could clash on which one is better for the plot at hand.

Raph & Donnie: the brains vs brawn option is right there for exploring, and juicier if you flip the script: have it be Donnie's brawn vs Raph's brains. Picture an episode like: Raph surprisingly wins a math contest which has Donnie re-evaluating his position as 'the smart one' on the team.

Mikey & Leo: Well, we saw 'You Got Served'. But I think you could also explore some interesting ramifications around Identity and Being True to Yourself with these two. Picture an episode like: Leo and Mikey enroll in a costume/beauty competition for fun, but as the contest goes on Leo gets further and further carried away by the suggestions and glam of the producers, while Mikey wants to stay true to himself.

Mikey & Donnie: I think it would be fascinating to examine Predictability vs Unpredictability with these two. Maybe they get away on bro's trip, just the two of them, and they each have a different itinerary planned. Donnie has a timetable down to the last second, and Mikey wants it free and open to opportunity and improvise, no plans! This could cause friction.

Leo & Donnie: as we saw in 'Lair Games', their competitiveness can get ugly. Both have a strong need to be right, so I can see a scenario where they each are trying to prove something and the question at the end is 'who is actually right?'

They're such good, well-rounded characters that you can do just about anything with them and be able to reasonably justify it. A lot of fanfiction explores this very stuff which is a fantabulous playground, too. (If you want any recs, let me know!)
