4 stages of a Migraine
😟 PREDROME: The migraine journey begins with the predrome stage. This is like a warning signal from your body. You might feel subtle changes like mood swings, irritability, or fatigue. It's your body's way of saying, "brace yourself."
🌀 AURA: The aura stage is like stepping into a surreal world. Some people experience visual disturbances, like shimmering lights or zigzag lines. Others may have tingling sensations or difficulty speaking. It's like a mysterious prelude to the main event.
💥 ATTACK: The migraine attack itself is the intense part. This is when the pain strikes with full force, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. It can feel like a thunderstorm inside your head.
😓 POSTDROME: Finally, after weathering the storm, you reach the postdrome stage. You may feel drained, tired, and mentally foggy. It's like the calm after the storm as your body recovers from the migraine ordeal.

Thanks to Shoshana for featuring my self-portraits on her migraine blog @MigraineMeanderings I have a new fan who buys these self-portraits to show her loved ones what she goes through with migraine disease. They are Giclee’s with archival inks and acid free fine art paper (Hahnemuhle), mounted to Gator Board with an easy-hang backing. See website more for more info: https://www.lariasaunders.com
One week left to donate to my yearly Miles for Migraine fundraiser. Get a personal abstract painting for a donation of $10 or more - I use your FB/IG/Tumblr photos. See recent post for examples of gift paintings.

No, you don’t have a “sinus migraine”
It’s 2020, almost 2021.
Can we please
please
Stop using migraine as a symptom for “bad headache”?
You do not have a “sinus migraine”. You do not have a “tension migraine”. You have a sinus headache or a tension headache, and those can absolutely be absolutely agonizing, 10/10 on the pain scale -
But you don’t have a specific set of neurological and physiological symptoms associated with migraine disorder.
Phases of migraine, via the Mayo Clinic website:
Prodrome Phase - 24-48 hours prior
constipation
mood changes including depression or euphoria
food cravings
neck stiffness
food cravings
increased thirst/urination
frequent yawning
Everyone who suffers from migraine disorder is different, so you may not have all of these. I usually don’t notice anything until the aura starts. I get euphoria approximately 30 minutes prior in conjunction with aura.
Aura - not everyone who has migraine disorder will experience aura, but if you do, these are some things you may experience:
Visual phenomena, such as seeing various shapes, bright spots or flashes of light
Vision loss
Pins and needles sensations in an arm or leg
Weakness or numbness in the face or one side of the body
Difficulty speaking
Hearing noises or music
Uncontrollable jerking or other movements
I get visual flashes as well as vision loss. A small spot of light forms, like when you accidentally glance at a bright light. It spreads, and turns into zigzag electric rainbows. Inside this sphere is a blind spot. It can take up to 1/4 of my vision before fading. I often feel nausea during this phase. Sometimes I can stop the migraine at this point by going into a dark quiet place and waiting for 30 minutes, but usually not. I also experience weakness. I’ve had to hold myself up against a shelf to keep standing during this phase.
Attack - the actual pain. This can last for hours and even days.
Pain usually on one side of your head, but often on both sides
Pain that throbs or pulses
Sensitivity to light, sound, and sometimes smell and touch
Nausea and vomiting
I get pain on one side, usually the right side. For me the throbbing is slow and comes and goes in waves; always intense, but sometimes slightly bearable. Light is unbearable. I prefer to be in a hot bath alone in a dark bathroom. Sound is okay if it’s very quiet. I get nauseous of the lights come on or smells get to be too much. My pain is like clockwork, much like my aura/prodrome, and lasts about 7 hours.
Postdrome - after the attack. You though it was over because the pain is gone? You rube. I’m usually exhausted, even if I just spent 7 hours trying to sleep through the pain. I’m usually starving because again, I didn’t eat for 7 hours and I’m a grazer. I try to eat a big meal during the aura phase to prevent the hunger afterwards. I often feel elated again, but also completely out of it and weird.
-----------
A sinus/tension headache can suck. I get those too. I’m not here to dismiss the agony of other kinds of headache. I am here to demand you stop calling your headaches migraines. You do not have migraine disorder. Sufferers of this disorder already have enough to deal with, we don’t need you walking around claiming pressure points can “cure sinus migraines”. Stop that shit.

today i took two pills the pain rests behind my eyes, on top of my scalp, in my forehead it does not leave and i want to cry, to scream, to dig my nails into my flesh but instead i sit with a mug of tea i eat dinner even though i’m not hungry i text apologies for not being able to reply i ask my mom to hold me i try to navigate my day as normal because maybe if i force myself to move through the pain it won’t bother me as much anymore maybe i can grow used to it so instead of blinding throbs it’ll become a dull ache; annoying but manageable maybe i’m kidding myself (i’m sure i am) but it’s hard and days like this are harder than most and i don’t want to be this way light makes me wince but i don’t want to live in the dark i don’t want to live under ice packs and out of pill bottles but it would be cruel to my body to try and live any other way

I read @misha 's poems in one sitting, migraine and all. I did have to take a few breaks. No spoilers, but if you know me, and if I tell you it was a level 9 migraine kinda night and I still read the book cover to cover, you know that means something. . . #lifeonosage #migraine #migrainewarrior #chronicmigraine #mishacollins #icekaptherapeutics #somethingsistillcanttellyou #poetry #poems (at Independence, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVBVYrUrgfE/?utm_medium=tumblr

I am proud of this, which I finished creating last night. It is often difficult to complete something like this on the timeline I worked with because of my migraines. They hold me back on doing what I love. This time, however, I was able to push through and meet my goals.
