While listening to Epic, I noticed an interesting pattern with how antagonists are portrayed, and how Odysseus’ interactions with them are coded.

In Epic, the monsters Odysseus faces are rarely fighting for their own sake. Polyphemus attacks Odysseus’ crew to avenge his sheep, and Poseidon destroys his ships as revenge for his son’s suffering. Similarly, Circe only threatens Odysseus to protect her nymphs. Odysseus does not kill any of these enemies, and while he is occasionally criticized for letting them go free, the overall implication is that he did the right thing by sparing them.

Then we hit the Thunder Saga, and Odysseus begins his arc as a ‘monster’ by killing the sirens. His actions here are brutal, and whether or not they are justified is, I think, up to the listener. However, it’s significant that the sirens are the first foes Odysseus faces on his journey who aren’t either defending or avenging what they love. They attack unprovoked, and while Odysseus’ method of execution is gory, he is never punished for it by other characters within the narrative. Apollo is the only one to protest, and even he is swayed easily when Athena says (among other things) that the sirens were “trying to do him worse.” The sirens attacked first, and while Odysseus’ response was ‘monstrous,’ his crew obeyed his commands and he was not challenged or ostracized for giving said commands. He is only treated as a monster when he yields to Scylla, who also attacked without provocation.

Thus, in Epic, the monsters fighting to protect or avenge their loved ones are protected by the very story - killing them may be more convenient, but it isn’t the answer. However, the monsters who attack without provocation, for their own amusement or satisfaction, do not receive such respect. Killing them is acceptable, and cooperating with them is monstrous.

By this logic, Odysseus is justified in his actions, however atrocious. He attacks to protect his family, and therefore deserves mercy.

No one else knows it. Oscar: Robin does, and we all know bits n’ pieces, don’t we? [Byrd grumbled disinterestedly] Oscar: I think it’s long overdue, pal-.. what if we all learn it together? Properly this time. Byrd: I guess… Oscar: All I heard was yes. Byrd: Are you deaf too? Oscar: [snorts] C’mon, we’ll probably find the other pairs as we clear up. Wren: Daaaaad, it’s raining! Soap doesn't know what kind of higher power found him at parade rest in Price's office, hungover as shit, after showing said man just how undisciplined he used to me. but he's not sure he particularly favors them.

he doesn't even really remember what all he did last night. mostly bits and pieces. lots of drinks. loud cheering. an... ice sculpture? knowing him, whatever it was, wasn't exactly SOP. and now he's waiting to reap the cushions of his actions.

he felt like dogshit. worse than. he tried to keep some water down with little success. he didn't even bother with breakfast. and nausea aside, he couldn't afford to keep price waiting. and after waking in Ghost's room, he's sure the Lieutenant has his own punishments to dole out after the captain.

"at ease, Soldier." Soap tried not to wince at the man's voice, though he's not entirely sure he succeeded at that either. not when Price sighs and in a significantly lower tone asks, "what are you doing here, Soap?"

"collecting my punishment? Sir?" obviously that's why he's here. quite frankly he's too hungover to parse out what Price really wants from him.

"do you even know what you did last night?"

"ye-" the thinking part of his mind reminds him that he learned never to lie to Price, "no, sir. but I know the nature of my drinking, sir."

"so, to get this straight, you go and get yourself drunk last night, then you wake up this morning; past sun up; in my Lieutenant's room, and then, you come stand in front of me; without even knowing what you've done." A new weight dropped into Soap's stomach the longer he went on, until finally, finally Price sits back in his chair with a heavy sigh. "am I correct?" he addresses when Soap doesn't respond.

"Yes, Sir."

"then you'll not be surprised to hear that you're free to go."

and that.. that wasn't right, right? what was his reparations? wasn't he supposed to be sweeping the sun off the walkways, or mowing the lawn with beard trimmers, or hell, lav duty at the very least?

he waited for Price to go on, but he didn't, only turned back to his paperwork. then he, honest to god, shoo-ed him out. soap swears on his life.

Extremely lazy Xie Lian & white lotus Luo Binghe meeting.

After this Xie Lian tries to cook him something to warm him up in his shed and Luo Binghe is so offended & horrified by his (lack of) skills that he refuses to leave Xie Lian until he learns /just a little bit/ to cook. It's totally not because he's very alone, just lost his mom and Xie Lian is the first to be very kind to him in a very long time.

Eventually Xie Lian starts to worry that Binghe might get hurt if he stays with him because of his bad luck, so he tells him it's time for them to separate. Some crying & begging on Luo Binghe's part — "Daozhang, please, reconsider!"

"But Binghe, didn't you say you wanted to learn to cultivate?"

"Daozhang can teach me too."

"...I told you, Binghe. I don't have any spiritual energy. I wouldn't be a good teacher for you."

"But daozhang..."

Xie Lian still drops him before Cang Qiong doors and then speedwalks off the mountain.
