A YEAR, took me a year to finally get proper photos done of Youko 😭😭😭. I am so proud of how this cosplay came out. Minus the pain it is to wear the harness, it forces me to sit straighter and not slouch too much. I got these photos done at Planet Anime Kansas City by the lovely @allthingslaurenstudios . This was my first time booking with Lauren, and i booked her twice over the weekend! So excited to start sharing Youko with you guys! . . . Make-up: @pinkfairything 📷: @allthingslaurenstudios

GATEway FATE
If anyone's been looking for a Final Fantasy themed event (with a focus on XIV) in the Midwest that's well-run from both a vendor and an attendee's perspective, I'll happily recommend GATEway FATE in St. Louis.
It's run by the same folks behind Anime St. Louis, meaning they've established their credentials and capability of running a convention.
Here's a write-up I did of it for cosplay friends:
Hotel:
double queen rooms sleep 6 comfortably; the couch pullout bed is in the entry room that opens onto the central courtyard, and then there's a door between that and the double queen room. We had 5 cosplayers with multiple cosplays, some armour, and we all managed to get ready easily.
Lots of tables and mirrors to repair/tweak things as needed.
Even though the bathroom is small, there are multiple other seated mirrors for makeup and preparation, and the bar sink makes it easy to get water even when someone's in the bathroom. We somehow all were very cheerful about the shower rotation.
Each room has a minibar with a bar-sized fridge with small freezer compartment, a coffee maker, additional sink, and microwave, so it's very easy to bring food in.
Breakfast is included, and features a custom omelette bar and buffet style stuff, plus fountain drinks, coffee, and tea. Omelettes are great, buffet is solid, and it runs from 6:30am-10am, so plenty of time to grab food. Made it very easy to eat properly in the morning.
There are fountains inside the hotel that make great backdrops, though the lighting isn't the best. There is also a fountain outside the hotel that is gorgeous, and some nice areas that make good sets for photoshoots. Lots of local folks who can also point you towards local photoshoot locations, and it's in St. Charles, which has a historic district that would make for GREAT photos, especially since it does get dressed up for Halloween. Or the St. Louis Botanical Gardens are a great place for photos.
Cons:
The air circulation in the hotel rooms should be improved as according to my aranet, the CO2 tended to be about 2k whenever people were inside.
The front room can get a bit noisy as it does open onto the courtyard, and soundproofing only does so much when there's a door.(edited)
Convention centre:
Connected to the hotel, so no need to go outside to get to it.
Lots of light/windows and climate control can be quite good/easily adjusted
Lots of rooms and side-rooms for panels, and easily accessible.
Food on-site, both by convention staff and by local vendors, incl. a vegan Japanese place, coffee/cafe stuff, and more. It seems to be configurable depending on what the conrunner wants (more on that later).
10-15min walk to an Aldi and small strip-mall; Cracker Barrel across the little road from the con centre if you want Americana.
Convention itself: No surprise, as this is run by the same person who does the larger Anime St. Louis in the same place, but it was well-run. Things of note:
In rooms where there was going to be a lot of activity and/or cosplayers, such as the Worst Cosplay Contest panel, the AC was usually cranked pretty low to prevent people overheating (though they did forget in the green room of the actual contest, but that was remedied pretty quickly?)
Themed food on-site for reasonable prices and generous portions; I had the Starboard/Larboard chicken tenders and couldn't finish it despite it being good. The boxes were so cute. Verie had the Last Stand burger and said it was decent, and a lot of food. They had vegan/gluten free options as well.
Panels were a lot of fun and varied; I actually felt bad to miss some but was running around with friends a lot.
Lots of places and times to hang out with friends and chat; there were tables and chairs everywhere and that ensured that nobody was standing for too long in uncomfy shoes, etc.
Concerts were great, as was the drag show. There was a Q&A with the queens in the hotel lobby afterwards and the main question from all the cosplayers was, "HOW DO YOU GET YOUR WIG TO STAY ON THROUGH CARTWHEELS?!?!" Highly, highly recommend the drag show, it was SO much fun and hilarious to see the drag show newbies, incl. Bakool Ja Ja's VA's PARENTS, gleefully waving tips and interacting with the performers.
VA guests were quite accessible and happy to chat. I didn't have things for them to sign (their specific merch sold out fast), but there weren't many lineups.
Hotel being attached meant that it was easy to take over a table and hang out with friends in the indoor courtyard. There's a pool and hot tub as well, apparently.
They're prepping year 2.0, and are going to take into account feedback from 1.0.

Got invited to a discord channel at the con that was supposed to be "midwest cosplayers" but apparently they just meant Minnesota... it's chock fulla teens and they want a photo ID to prove I'm 18 and also they keep a Google doc of everyone's triggers that nobody should ever talk about. God I've never felt so 'old man yells at cloud'

Rabbit Jerry appearing in OC means only one thing: Jerry has become a popufur (popular furry) and has started selling merch. He gets tons of parasocial fans trying to meet him at Midwest Furfest (a midwest furry convention). At least one person always tries to follow him into the headless lounge (where fursuiters take off their heads and try to cool off since the suits are suffocatingly hot). He's also more popular than Orlam is on social media, which secretly* annoys him to no end. Jerry probably only posts for Fursuit Fridays and then spends his time retweeting furry rabbit art including an absurd number of commissions he gets. Surprisingly one of the very few popufurs without drama. *Not secretly, he vague posts about it every other day on his Tumblr Now in my Expert Opinion, the next likely to be a furry is Cecil, and no one knows he is one. Emo gay furry is like an entire genre of furry. His truesona (the sona that most represents you) would be a cat and his fursona (basically whatever you want it to be) would be a dragon. Iggy isn't a furry but he fits so perfectly into the stereotype of one and honestly, I think being a furry would make his life better. He could go to conventions in a matching rabbit fursuit to Jerry's and Jerry could help him navigate around and take him to the headless lounge when he needs a break. He's probably way too confused by all the terminology and if there's a 'place to start' to ever become one, but I believe in him. ANYWAYS there's the most detailed headcanons for an audience of... uh... well, I'm only aware of one other furry Our Wonderland fan. So two! (Shoutout to her if he's reading this.)
THIS IS SO INTENSE????
I'll be real that I know nothing furries or conventions so I will take your word for it regarding all of this 🤣
I've always seen Iggy as more of a potential closet super intense cosplayer that spends years on a cosplay. he normally hates pictures of himself but somehow while cosplaying it doesn't feel like himself anymore and he actually likes it
the Jerry stuff is indeed interesting... I'll be real that I never fully thought through the implications of the Jerry poster on the wall before 🤣 it was just supposed to be silly and random dhfhfg now I'm having visions of Orlam wondering what it is Jerry gets up to all the time when he says he's too busy to come out for drinks so he starts following him around secretly and discovering all of his antics 🤣

I made a Porygon cosplay at the Trashgoblins booth at C2E2, took it home and painted it and wore it to the next day of that con. Since then I've been working on repairing and improving the cosplay since then. Here's a timeline
Mk I: C2E2 2024
Tumblr media
Colors were a bit dull due to the quick paint job.
I originally had that stupid flap. I quickly removed it.
Mk. II: Anime Central 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A bright new paint job and suitable garments to boot! I want to get a better morph suit that doesn't have a hood and removable gloves cos being in that *sucked*. I added grilles for some visibility and better straps to hold the helmet and breast plate in place.
People just could not see the tail and kept walking into it, leading me to vising cosplay medics 3 times over the course of the con. I plan on angling it upwards in a new version of the tail, similar to another Porygon cosplayer I met.
Mk. III: Anime Midwest (in progress)
I got a lot of ideas from my last outing.
For changes I need to make to the cardboard, I'm working on reshaping it to better fit the actual shape of Porygons head. I also want to attach it to a helmet and have it act as a visor so I don't have to carry it all the time.
I plan on reworking the tail completely and slimming down the breastplate to something similar I saw with the other cosplayer (I don't have a photo yet sorry, but it was like under her top so it was a lot slimmer and the top pulled tight over it. Giving it a more feminine figure which I definitely want since I'm trans.)
Here's what I've done so far on the head.
Tumblr media
The big mantra of this cosplay is to reuse as much as possible.
Between C2E2 and ACEN I had to replace a segment of the tail, I held onto it and that blue panel you see there was originally part of the tail! Since I'm switching this to a visor I'm removing any visibility from it. So the grill has been pulled out and I'm going to fill it in with cardboard and extend the nose cone.
Once I have the general shape I want I plan on smoothing it out a little paper mache.

So Danny is frpm a Midwestern small town... I'm pretty sure they'd have a field trip at some point. Or maybe after the events of the movie, the turtles decide to do a vacation. Midwest small town probably wasn't the ideal option but the place is known to crazy shit happening. A few turtles that can walka and talk should be nothing next to 'America's Most Haunted City' and they have a pretty nice goth and 'cosplayer' population so the green skin wouldn't be nearly as noticeable
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oooh! All of these would work very well : ) i don't know which would be better lol
You know what's even funnier about this hypothetical crossover? DP ghost are all green skinned. so Danny and Co's first reaction would probably be to think they were turtle-like ghosts and not, you know, mutants. (and yes, Danny has ghost sensing powers. But he's also a little dense. he would definitely look at the turtles, immediately assume they're ghosts without realizing his ghost sense didn't go off.)
thank you!

2024 Fan Expo Boston - Day 3
This past weekend was the 2024 Fan Expo Boston convention at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston from Fri. June 14 to Sun. June 16. Here at Green’s Party, I’ve been covering the convention! Read my coverage here.
On Sunday I returned with my son. Can't think of a better way to spend part of Father's Day then geeking out with my son. Much like the prior days of the con, there were loads of cosplayers, gamers and fans out in full force.

Some of the fun cosplayers out at Fan Expo Boston.

Gunn as Kraglin in GOTG
Actor Sean Gunn might not be the household name his director brother James Gunn is, but he has stolen many scenes in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies as Kraglin. He had a booth at Fan Expo Boston and we briefly talked before he signed an autograph for my son. Very cool guy! With the GOTG movies, the soundtrack has been very important going back to the mixtape on the walkman to the Zune player in the last movie. I asked him if he had a favorite song on the soundtracks? He said "Of the three movies it's tough because there's a lot of songs that I like. But I think if I had to pick one [pauses], well I'm going to pick two. One I'm going to say 'Lake Shore Drive', the Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah song. I remember growing up it was the local song we'd hear on the radio in the Midwest, so that's really cool to have such an obscure song reach such a big audience. It's such a great lost 70s tune. But also I gotta give a shout out to "Come and Get Your Love" [by Redbone], the opening credits music to the first movie. I've heard it a kajillion times and I still love it and have never gotten sick of that song."
Tumblr media
ASL translator, Weintraub, and Howard
One of the biggest stars at this year's Fan Expo Boston was easily Bryce Dallas Howard. She has proven to be more than just Ron Howard's daughter since her breakout role in The Village (a disappointment, but no denying her performance in it). She is a self-proclaimed sci-fi geek and it shows in her filmography with Spider-Man 3, Terminator Salvation, and the Jurassic World movies. I've been more of a fan of her performances in The Help, 50/50, and Rocketman more than her big event movies. But I've been particularly impressed with her directing some standout episodes of The Mandalorian! She did a conversation in the main theater moderated by Collider's Steven Weintraub. One fan asked her since she followed her father in directing Star Wars, if she might follow her uncle [Clint Howard] in directing Star Trek. She said 'I'm a Trekkie, so I would love it. I mean wasn't the last season of Picard just brilliant?! So I can only hope!" At the end, she got a little choked up as she talked about the late great Carl Weathers of The Mandalorian. She said his family is having a private memorial for him and she'd love for the audience to give him a standing ovation as she filmed it. The entire audience (myself included) got up for Mr. Weathers!
This year's Fan Expo Boston was a blast and it was especially fun to have it at Hynes Convention Center after a number of years at the Seaport.
