hello <3 since i got these asks at the same time i decided to combine my thoughts on them in this post. yet another annoying sjw essay from yours truly on this blog

before i get into these i think i need to preface why im like. i guess overly hyperfocused on a certain unproblematic base (same age au / platonic canon) for them and avoid the ped0philic content like the plague lol

tw for pedophilia ment, rape ment if that makes you squicky. ALSO THIS IS LONG AND RAMBLY

as i’ve mentioned a couple times already, ive been into the ship since i was 12, back when it was very very common to not only post untagged (nsfw) canonverse content of the two in writing and in drawing but also non con and the like, so you can imagine how bad my first impression online was. thinking back on it ...as a child i found it disturbing but didnt really register how problematic it really was?? (i know, but i also lived in the middle of nowhere and had no one explain this to me)

skip to 2014 aka me coming back to naruto at 17ish and i had kinda become hyper aware of the fact that there was an increasing amount of people online who had come forward with explaining how fictional problematic content, mostly pedophilia, had been used to groom them into starting relationships with adullts. it was also a time where a lot of people didnt believe these victims, not registering how common it was for minors to be online friends with adults who had no boundaries and no qualms exposing them such content. not gonna get into my personal life here but i was lucky to not having gone through this myself. like... it kinda was my first time truly realising how fiction can EASILY be used to manipulate others irl (and yes i will not argue this, if you dont think fictional media can form and manipulate people’s opinions on attitudes, countries, cultures and virtues, pick up a book about the effects of propaganda media at least once please)

i, being young, still liking the dynamic but not really the romance, would point this out here and there in the fandom and get into fights with grown adults in their mid 20s who assumed i automatically hated the ship(s) and tried to restrict their freedom of speech or whatever, heard everything from the “age of consent doesnt exist in naruto” to the “sasori looks like a child what does it matter” despite people clearly playing on him being older and experienced. it made me so upset that people were just consuming all this content uncritically and exposing children to it tbh?? not really just sos but a lot of minor/adult ships in naruto in general. and thats where i sat down and thought, i do not want to be a grown adult talking down to children that point out how unsafe the fandom is. theyre absolutely right in drawing these boundaries and calling out adults who defend the uncritical consumption and creation of this content. i do not want to consume or create content that predators could use to groom minors, and i absolutely do want to let younger people in fandom know that i am respecting their comfort zones and want them to have a safe and fun experience. after all, naruto is not an adult show and i think a lot of people forget that!!!! i am not perfect in that regard but its something that i, at the age of 23, am very passionate about and strive towards to.

and i guess thats where same age au was born for me and i have been sticking to it ever since.

so finally we can move to the first question

aside from the fact that we both dont like canon sos, i dont think it would work out even if i wasnt prejudiced to it anyways. in all honesty, 35 year old canon sasori is not a redeemable character to me, given the fact that he’s easily amongst the cruelest villains in naruto (torturing and killing and taxiderming people for his own fun personal gain, never for a goal that served anyone but himself. how do you redeem having over 300 corpses in your backpack that you felt absolutely no remorse for killing). sasori was legit one of the only cruel villains that didnt had someone else pull the strings, which sends a clear message on kishi’s part, who absolutely loves to redeem villains LOL.

being that old, he obviously had already been very manifested in what he believed in, even if it was shakey, to the point where the first crack in that world view (sakura and chiyo protecting each other) immediately had him give up on his life all together. that, in my opinion, is not a man who’s going to know what healthy relationships would look like, regardless of it being romantic or not. 35 year old sasori to me has the same appeal as an expired can of tuna and he’s probably very happy 6 feet under. he’s supposed to be a failed gaara in that sense that he had no one to look out for him and therefore was never going to experience anything but a bad ending in life. its fine that hes dead honestly, it wraps up his short character development the best IMO.

adding to that, seriously, sakura was obviously interested in knowing why he was that way, and called him out for being seriously fucked in the head, but it’s weird to me that people assume she had any interest in actively rehabilitating him, let alone starting a serious romantic relationship with him. sakura who’s not only very, uhm, immature and straight forward when it comes to her romantic viewpoints also, as a big bootlicker, wouldnt soil her standing in the village by starting anything with a disgraced and far too gone criminal like sasori. shipping that version of sasori with sakura intimately is still going to set her up for a huge power imbalance that would be difficult to handle imo, even if she was the one in the fight ultimately exerting her power over him. i would still look at it and think damn she deserves better than having to play therapist for man like that lol.

additionally, even if you ignored all of this, you cant really ignore that sasori had already known her as a child, and that had been his first and most impactful impression of her. i dont think that sasori would look at 35 year old sakura and see her as a grown woman and not the little green girl she was in the fight. plus, you easily fall into predatory comparison territory between the “childish” and “womanly” and i have seen way too often in fic just being boiled down to her now being fuckable. a lot of of ships do this and i would just like to remind yall thats it not normal for adults to want to start relationships with children they have seen grown up or known as a child when they themselves were fully grown adults. therefore, maybe if sakura hadnt met sasori before it would be less of a problem? but that also obviously defeats the point of the dynamic and the reason he died in the first place. so yeah, it sounds kind of doomed especially if you were to make it romantic.

WHICH BRINGS ME TO THE SECOND QUESTION

let me preface this that im not fundamentally against age gaps, even if im not super interested in it. after all, colorblind had a 5 yr age gap (with sakura being 21), even if, say, i wrote similar fics today i probably would make it smaller lol. i think it can be handled well if both parties have enough life experience to deal with it, and the author is cautious of where the age gap starts, i think a 10+ year age gap would be fine in a scenario where the younger party (i guess sakura) was at least 25-27ish, meaning she has completed most of her most formative life stages and probably had been in relationships before, meaning she would be able to handle it without having to fear a huge power imbalance. the older the younger party is the less the age gap is going to matter tbh .TsukiHoshino and AngelOfDeath10 both handle age gaps in their fics really well imo, so i do not mind reading about them.

unfortunately, a lot of people in this fandom think making sakura barely "”””legal””””” (18, not even 20 which is hilarious to me because the source material is obviously japanese) because they both cannot stand her being past her “prime years” of being young fertile and fuckable to much older men as well as thinking a 20 year old is automatically old enough to handle that type of relationship. ive seen a lot of unironic takes that believe it will absolve them of callout posts if they throw around age of consent and “shes 18 now suckers!!!” enough lmfao. absolutely hilarious. aging a minor up without aging the adult down seriously reeks of predatory “cant wait until youre 18″ narratives and thats why i find it similarly disturbing as straight up pedo shipping.

ultimately, sasosaku is and will always be a inherently problematic ship in canon, which is why i think it should always be handled a little more responsibly in fandom spaces, ignoring or outright excusing the main problem factor, which is sasori, isnt going to convince anyone that the dynamic in itself is well written and interesting enough to explore in aus, like giving sasori the redemption most of us wanted him to have by aging him down to a point in time where he was still realistically going to allow being positively influenced, similar to gaara.

so really, what i think is well handled age gap and how most people handle age gap in the naruto fandom are two different worlds at times lol

tl;dr

canon shippers have never been anything but gross when i was younger and i didnt wanna be like that, even if youre “smart”enough to differenate, actual creeps dont really care and might use your content to blur the lines, sasori isnt rly redeemable so romantic canonverse realistically wouldnt make much sense and is still iffy, age gaps are fine if they are handled well, but given that the dynamic doesnt really need the age gap to still work im not that invested on making that an essential part of my shipping experience.

TFATWS Spoilers under the cut

Literally the following is my thoughts and opinions, and there are probably some unpopular opinions lol. It's kinda really long lol.

Starting with some positives.

I loved how the two leads had storylines that mirrored each other. Sam needed to become Captain America and gain a title and Bucky needed to move on from The Winter Solider and loose a title.

Sam. Just Sam I loved him before but now I love him more.

Sam becoming Cap.

I loved Isaiah and his story.

I loved Sam's family, how they welcomed Bucky and the struggles Sarah had.

I really liked how they spent time with both Sam and Bucky and didn't forget the show was supposed to be about both of them. Often times shows tend to lean into the more popular or fan favorite lead and this show didn't do that. When Sam took center it felt natural and when Bucky took center it felt natural.

The Wakandans were great. I love Ayo and her friendship with Bucky.

Zemo was fine and fun enough.

John Walker was incredibly done. Wyatt Russell did an amazing job and the scene with the blood on the shield will forever be in my memory. Hands down one of the most impactful MCU moments.

I like the genderbend on Karl/Karli and the direction they took her character. People that go from sympathetic ideas to unforgivable means, make good villains. I think her more boring elements come from the lack of development she got.

Now on to the negatives.

This show could have been like two hours shorter and still told the same story with the same impact. Also earlier episodes, (maybe later episodes too I might have just gotten used to it and stopped noticing lol), had some weird ADR moments. IDK what happened behind the scenes but it was noticeable.

I would have loved it if one of the episodes was a flashback episode. The Sharon twist was obvious from the first episode she appeared in but like they thought it was good enough to save confirmation for the mid/end of the finale? Both her and Karli would have been benefited from a flashback episode.

Karli should have fought Bucky while Sam was focused on Walker. Sam could have had a moment where he tells him he will never be forgiven and Walker would responded with something similar to "I do what is right. I don't need forgiveness." Then when he becomes USAgent it lands more like the next progression in an arc rather than the redemption arc this could be interpreted as. I personally think this is a stepping stone and not a redemption but the MCU (and Disney) doesnt have a great track record when it comes to handling anything with nuance and the fans have an even worse track record when handling things that arent black and white. I guess my point is they could have handled the John Walker set up better.

Speaking of set up, this entire show was set up. This is my main and only real problem with this show. Nothing felt like it was resolved at the end. Karli even says she was part of a bigger movement. Killing her didn't change the fact a lot of people felt the un blip ruined their lives. People always shit on Tony for wanting to bring people back five years later instead of going back in time but like it had been five years, while some like Steve and Natasha hadn't moved on, others had. Some had better lives. Assuming everyone wanted to back to the way things used to be would also be a mistake. This has consequences too, as we see in these shows. But ruining the lives of the people who had bettered themselves would have been shitty too. And yea some people who had been bettered were worsened once again when the un blip happened but my point is going back and erasing the five years would have been shitty too. There is not really a right answer here as the right answer would have been to either stop the snap before it happened or to come to terms with the fact that the snap can never be undone. Leaving everyone as dead might have hurt, but it was the best thing for a community that had five years of mourning and moving on and counseling ETC. Ooof that was a tangent lol and I could probably write an essay so going back to my original point about set up. The flag smashers, or at least people who think the way they did still exist, Sharon Carter is the powerbroker but Sam and Bucky dont know and now shes back as agent 13, John Walker went from war hero to committing war crimes and his journey as USAgent is just starting, Sam has taken the Cap mantle and is ready to begin acting as Cap, and Bucky is both coming to terms with and moving on from his past. Nothing is actually resolved in this mini series. I know it's supposed to make you excited for the next movie/show/season whatever but have six episodes of little to no payoff IMO made for a flat show.

Building off the set up problem. This show had too much going on. Sam and Bucky each had their own personal journey (The A and B plot depending on the episode), Sam and Bucky being friends and their shared journey (C), John Walker and the Flag Smashers (the D and E plot depending on the episode), Zemo and the Wakandans (F), The PowerBroker/Sharon (G), The boat and Sarah which could be considered part of Sam's plot but since if you cut it out the only thing that actually effected Sam's journey would be the bank in the first episode and yet it still went on till basically the end I'm calling it it's own plot (H), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, which might be part of John Walker's story but since it's all set up for her to take a bigger role in the future and his set up could be completed without her I'm counts her separately (I), then you have the big meeting at the end, the senators and policy makers making choices the vote that they keep mentioning and once again more set up... (J). 10 ideas by my count, all needed their own set up, follow through, and payoff. And yes some stuff like Valentina the pay off will come later but still... It's all too many plots! And thats not mentioning side characters that were new to the show that they wanted to spend time with but couldn't.

Even though I think the shows aren't comparable/two different genres WandaVision had two more episodes (and yes some were shorter but I already mentioned I think FATWS could have benefited from that), completed all the main plots and had Wanda's journey (A), Vision's journey (B), Agatha, Pietro/Ralph, and the citizens of the hex (C), Outside the hex Monica (D), Outside the hex everyone else and sure you can separate Darcy, Jimmy and Heyward but none of them were setting up future stories or had their own distinctive plot outside the hex thing like Monica so she is the only one I am separating (E), the kids who could be counted as an extension of the Wanda and Vision plots since they didnt really have their own arc or story (F). 6 total. And some of those could be combined. Like I think we should separate Wanda Vision and the kids but technically they are just an extension of Wanda. And same with Monica, her story was mostly intertwined with Darcy, Jimmy and the outside the hex stuff. I separated her since I think she had enough moments to herself and she set up secret invasion or whatever, but like Valentina being a part of John's story it is arguable. Of these plots only the missing witness Jimmy thing, Wanda's post credits moment a moment seperate from everything else, Monica's mid credits i think? moment another one separate from everything else, and white vision were unresolved. They gave Agatha an opening ending but it was still an ending. And yes Darcy Heyward etc will probably come back but the plot they had here was finished. So arguably they had 2/6 unfinished plots. And if you don't count Jimmy's witness as a plot and just count it as an unanswered question then 1/6. And technically white vision is just half a vision and the other vision got a complete plot so really it's 0.5/6 At best they completed 92(ish)% of the plots and left 8 (ish) % for future stuff.

In contrast FATWS only finished Sam's journey into becoming Cap, Zemo and the Wakandans, and arguably Sam and Bucky's friendship. You might be able to argue that Bucky had a full circle moment with the guy whose son he killed, but that is one guy and Bucky has been carrying around a list of people like that guy. It's not the end of a story it is the start of a journey. And maybe it is possible to say the boat thing had an ending kinda. 2/10 completed. maybe 3/10 if you wanna push it 5/10. IMO at best they completed 50% of plot set up.

Clearly FATWS is meant to be this way and thats why it bothered me. They want you to watch Cap 4 or whatever they decide to call the theatrical movie that will come after this. I guess I was just expecting it to stand on it's own, and other than Sam's journey into becoming Captain America, which was amazing and deserved in every way, nothing this show did felt like it could have stood on its own. I know it's arguable that was the main story and only story that deserved to end. But I've already pointed out all the other running plots this show had, and I think at least two or three of them should have had follow through in the show.

Someone who plans to never seen an MCU movie after these shows could have watched WandaVision and enjoyed it. That is not the case for FATWS. If you don't plan on watching any MCU stuff in the future you won't know how over half the plots of this show will end. THis isn't even how the movies work. They each tell their own story while also setting up other things, so it is clear they know how to do this.

I can see why Disney decided to submit it as a series and not a mini series. Not only do they not want to compete with themselves (nominating WV as a miniseries) but also this isn't a miniseries.

I guess to conclude I'll say I did really enjoy watching this show. It was fun and there were some great moments. It featured amazing character and amazing actors, but I wish it had bothered to finish more of what it started.

Fic summary:

Techno, Tommy, Wilbur and Phil have been hanging out at the abandoned amusement park in the woods since they moved in. Techno likes knowing he's definitely alone with his brothers Tommy likes climbing on the old rides Wilbur likes having a place to play his music Phil likes spending time with his younger brothers

That is, until a group of brothers calling themselves the 'dream team' move in down the road. Will the sleepy boys give in and share the park or will they succeed in scaring the new kids off?

Without Tommy and Phil around, Techno and Wil hang out in the park alone until they see some unwelcome visitors.

L’manburg had never become a national theme park but it was big; if you asked anyone from any other town they would have never heard of it, but here it was like an urban legend, an eerie reminder of how things can go from bustling to dead in the blink of an eye.

But even in a battlefield, poppy’s still bloom and even in a place like this, memories were still made.

As Wilbur strummed out random chords, trying to figure out the perfect sequence for the song he was working on, Techno sat next to him, cross-legged. With his long, pink hair draped over one shoulder in a loose braid, The teen scrawled into a notebook some English homework. Overall, the two were at peace, this was their routine and even with Tommy off playing at Tubbo’s house and Phil at work, they still enjoyed the time they could spend together.

Eventually, Wil had started singing Techno’s essay as if it were the lyrics to the song he had been working on, earning himself a snigger and a playful shove from his twin.

“Don’t you have any homework, music boy?”

Pulling his braid up, twisting it into a bun and tying it off with a hair band, Techno glanced over at his brother. In all honesty, his hair really annoyed him, he was naturally very anxious and he didn’t like bringing attention to himself so long, pink hair didn’t seem like a very good choice.

If he had any control over it, he’d be identical to Wilbur and he’d look so normal that everyone would leave him alone; the pink hair was always an anomaly, not even doctors could figure it out, the rapid speed at which it grew was strange too but he had learnt to live with it.

Wil had a friend called Niki, she helped him with his hair when he was getting overwhelmed with it.

“I do but then you wouldn’t get to hear me sing would you?”

Wil laughed, leaning back against the old pool wall as he reached for his school bag, only to notice that Techno already had a hold of it and was looking through his planner to see what homework he needed to catch up on.

They really thought alike didn’t they?

Wilbur smiled to himself as he looked up to Techno, waiting for him to lecture him on everything he needed to do.

“You’ve got a math’s paper due tomorrow, Phil’s better at that stuff than I am so if you need help you’ll have better luck with him than me”

Techno copied Wil, laying down next to him even though the pool hadn’t been cleaned in years. No doubt their uniform would need washing.

“You’re both better than I am, Tech’ I really think at some point you should start going to your own classes” he sucked in a breath, lips pierced together “You’re smarter than I am and I don’t want to hold you back just because we want to stay together. I know you do all the work for your lessons and I think it’s really cool that you’re able to keep on top of things like that but eventually you should probably try to go to a class alone.”

Techno scowled and Wilbur knew he needed to elaborate if he didn’t want to hurt his brother.

“Tech’ you’re really cool and funny but you’re also so smart and I know you’ll get great grades in your exams if you keep at it but sometimes it seems like you’d be happier with your own group of friends. I’d miss you so much if we stopped staying together but I think it would be good for both of us if we learnt how to talk to people aside from each other”

“I can’t Wil. I know what you mean, we can’t stay in this bubble forever, but I dont think i’m ready yet”

“Yeah I know… and that’s fine, we don’t need to rush it, I’ll stay with you as long as you’ll put up with me”

And the tension melted away as the two laughed, it was almost ironic how they were so good at communicating their feelings with each other and so bad with it to anyone else (aside from their brother’s of course.) Wil had Techno’s hand clutched in his own again, he really loved his brothers and loved giving them hugs and cuddles, he understood that Techno didn’t like that kind of affection though so he stuck to just holding his hand whenever he felt big emotions.

The peaceful nature of their afternoon hadn’t lasted long though, a loud crash was heard somewhere nearby. Undoubtedly it would be the Dream Team, Wil didn’t understand why they couldn’t just leave, if he had accidentally intruded on someone else's spot, he would have left!

“Do you wanna go find them?” Wil stood up, still holding onto Techno’s hand. It was comforting but it was also just nice to know he was there and present.

The pink haired boy nodded, pulling his bun back down into the long braid again since, even though it was less practical, it looked a lot better.

The old pool was hard to climb out of, it always had been, but for Techno and Wilbur it was the best place in the whole park. If Tommy was being too hyper or Wil wanted some more privacy to play a song that might have been more personal, they always came down to the old log floom and sat in the pool.

It was deep though, it had been made with the intention of the boats riding over the water, they had never made any steps to get out since people weren't supposed to be inside of it but that wasn’t to say it was impossible to get out, you just needed to know how.

Sliding his guitar onto his back and holding his backpack against his chest, Wil made his way to the old vines that seeped into the pool, they had never checked to make sure these vines were safe to touch but they had never gotten a rash from them so they supposed it was fine.

After making sure Techno was right by him, the brunette used the vine to ‘abseil’ himself up the side of the pool, being only 13 they were both still pretty light but it was clear that in a few more years they wouldn’t be able to do that any more.

Techno climbed up after him and that was that, he had his mouth clamped shut as he always had done when he didn’t know if he was alone or not, Wil didn’t mind though, he had grown up with his brother like this so he knew his mannerisms well enough to read his body language fairly accurately.

“I’m pretty sure the noise came from this way, honestly they’re probably digging around looking for things to steal. I don’t trust them at all” Grumbling, Wil shoved one hand in his pocket and took hold of Techno’s with the other.

Glancing towards his brother, he saw the same kind of expression as his own, he could tell that Techno was just as upset as he was about someone messing with their space.

“I don’t like them” He spoke rather matter-of-factly, he had grown a habit of rambling since he liked to fill the silence when Techno couldn’t talk.

“They’re so rude. They don’t understand anything. I still can't believe what they said about you and Tommy! If you ask me, they deserved that rock! If Phil wasn’t there I would’ve thrown a second one..and a third one, then they could all have matching scars! And that Dream kid always has a mask on, how are we to know he’s not some criminal! Stranger danger dude! If we haven’t seen his face we shouldn’t play with him”

Wil rambled on as they walked, unaware of how hypocritical he was being by criticizing them for being rude about Techno’s issues and then immediately talking about Dream’s. That was just a part of childhood though, you had to be a bit of an asshole sometimes to learn how to be a good person.

After getting a sharp elbow to the rib from his twin, he realised that he hadn’t been paying attention to his surroundings at all because right in front of them were two of the three boys they had been expecting, sitting in the centre of a heap of old Theme park maps. They had never done any research about L’manburg but Wil guessed it was probably open during the 80’s due to the overall theme of it.

“What are you doing here?”

He tried to seem threatening, he hoped he had at least a little bit of a bad boy reputation after throwing that rock. He was still riding out the adrenaline high from that.

That’s what he thought at least, until George turned around. From his ear to his mid cheek, there was a big, puffy, red scar and Wil couldn’t help but feel guilty. That looked like it had definitely needed stitches.

He never wanted to hurt anyone he just wanted to scare them and maybe graze them up a bit.

“Listen.” Wil sighed, telling himself he was only doing this because Phil had told him to and definitely not because he felt like a horrible person right now. Who knows how long that scar would take to heal? Maybe he’d have it all his life. The thought of someone being scarred for life because of him made him feel a little sick.

“I hate you guys. You and your stupid brother with his stupid mask. You’re all stupid and you dont understand anything. But I shouldn’t have hurt you” A bump to the shoulder and a squeeze to his hand was all the encouragement he needed to keep going, to know he was making the correct choice.

“I feel really bad, that scar looks like it hurts, that being said though why are you here?”

The youngest brother glared at him, Wilbur glared back. He remembered Phil saying his name was Sapnap. That was a stupid name, he thought, but then again he had a brother called Techno so he was being hypocritical yet again.

“We were gonna look around because we thought you weren’t here but we got lost” George had mumbled from where he sat. Now the maps made sense, they were trying to find their way out. They were far too water damaged to be used though, the ink was smudged beyond comprehension, he remembered looking through them himself, with Techno and Phil when they had first found this place. Considering the amount of water damage all over this park, Wil wouldn’t be surprised if it had closed due to a hurricane or something.

“We were looking around but Dream called saying dinner was gonna be ready soon and that we had to come home but we don't know the way”

“We can show you the way” Wilbur wore a smug smile across his face, he didn’t even need to look at Techno to know he was thinking the same thing.

“You need to swear never to come back though, you two or your stupid brother”

He could see Sapnap get angry over his brother being called stupid but he seemed to know when to pick his battles, considering he was currently the youngest in the group.

“Fine.” George stood up, slinging a backpack over his shoulders

“Why are you so protective of this place anyway? It’s not like it can get any worse, none of the rides even work anymore”

For a split second Wilbur considered telling the truth, opening up to them. Aside from Phil, he was for sure the most honest brother, he wore his emotions on his sleeve and it was usually Techno that convinced him to pull back if he knew his brother was about to hurt himself.

After a quick glance to Techno, to make sure it was okay, he started talking.

“I don’t have anywhere else to play my music, Tommy doesn’t have anywhere else he can run around, Phil just likes hanging out honestly, but there’s nowhere else Techno feels comfortable speaking. I’m not letting you take that from him, from us. He deserves to have a place he feels safe and we deserve to be able to talk to our brother” He didn’t bother mentioning that he found communicating with Techno like this still fairly easy, he wanted it to sting when he told the two why they needed the park. He wanted them to feel just as guilty as he had when he saw the scar.

“Can’t he just.. I dunno.. Talk?” Sapnap giggled, earning a smack to the back of the head from none other than Techno.

“It’s kinda like anxiety” Tommy hadn’t understood at first either, he thought maybe they just hadn’t experienced it before.

“He’s fine talking with our brother’s and myself but it’s really really hard for him to do it with other people. He’s not weak though so don’t underestimate him because of it” He gave them both a glare, still trying to appear threatening

“So promise you wont come back. We took you to the exit, now go home and don’t come back”

The duo both gave half hearted promises, In fairness they weren’t even trying to be cruel. They were just young and wanted to explore a cool area with people they thought could potentially be their friends. Still not really understanding why they needed the place so badly, they muttered to themselves the whole walk home about how they could ‘reclaim’ L’manburg.

Summary: Brooke, Yvie and Nina are three flatmates who forged a friendship in their first year of university and picked up some other waifs and strays along the way. Now in their final year, there are feelings that need to be unravelled and confessions to be made whilst navigating drunk nights, hungover mornings, takeaways, group chats, library meetups, cafe gossiping, and the small matter of getting a degree.

“Are you still mad at me?”

Brooke rolled her eyes and stared at Yvie. “I will be if you keep trying to talk to me while I’m in the middle of this.”

Yvie looked at her expectantly. There was a pause. “So is that a yes, or…?”

“So is that an apology, or…?” Brooke raised an eyebrow, then immediately cringed as Yvie exhaled loudly, causing several heads to turn their way.

“Oh my God, Brooke, I said sorry like the moment it happened,” she hissed in exasperation.

“You fell out with me in the smoking area because you said, oh…wasn’t it something along the lines of ‘I’m sorry for trying to speed up your relationship with Vanjie, you ungrateful bitch’?”

“It was ungrateful cunt, actually,” Yvie tapped away at her laptop and Brooke rolled her eyes. Stifling a smile, Yvie looked at her friend and then reached across to take her hand. “No, listen. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for making that comment about you and Vanessa and I’m sorry for calling you an ungrateful cunt. They were both really out of line, uncool things to do. Can you please go back to normal with me before Nina goes into anaphylactic shock?”

Brooke laughed and squeezed Yvie’s hand. “Okay, fine. You’re forgiven. I’ll only bring it up like…seven more times to make you feel bad.”

Yvie chuckled. “Deal.”

Brooke turned back to her own laptop, her design in front of her but untouched for a solid forty minutes as her thoughts had swirled round her head. It was Monday, a new week, and the atmosphere in the flat had been tense over the weekend, as all three of the flatmates recovered from the aftermath of the scathing drunk row Brooke and Yvie had got into. Yvie hadn’t meant to make Brooke feel shit at pres on Friday, she was sure, but the comment still ran through her head and made her wince with cringe- unless your name’s Brooke or Vanessa. Okay, Yvie had almost definitely said it to take the heat off herself, but there had been absolutely no need. There was even less need to call Brooke a cunt, but Brooke knew Yvie had only done that because she felt bad and was covering up her own guilt with barbed attacks and a shit apology.

She couldn’t stay mad at Yvie, and she couldn’t dwell too much on the comment, not least because Brooke’s head had been occupied by something else that had happened, another drunk revelation that had knocked her for six.

“Brooke Lynn. Duh.”

The most fuckable person in the room, Plastique had asked, and Vanjie hadn’t held back on the answer. Brooke had barely been able to stop thinking about that information since it had been revealed, and it was somehow made worse by Vanjie being completely normal with her for the whole night they’d been out. Okay, for Vanjie, normal still meant cheek kisses and dancing too close and enough compliments to sink a ship with, but part of Brooke wished she had had the confidence to ask her what she’d meant to achieve with her answer. Part of Brooke wished she’d had the confidence to say Vanjie’s name when she’d been asked who she’d most like to fuck in the room, but Nina was a safe answer that deflected the implication. Scarlet was right, it had been a shit one, but a shit answer in a stressful drinking game was far more bearable than dealing with the fallout of an honest one. Part of Brooke- actually, all of Brooke- wished she had more confidence, period.

A sigh from beside her tugged Brooke out of her own head. Yvie was looking at her laptop with incredulity, as if it had done something to offend her. Brooke stifled a laugh. The library really showed you every possible variant of raw human emotion, and if her eyes needed a break she liked to just scan the room and watch people’s faces. Across from her, a boy had his head in his hands and was exhaling deeply. Just deleted the paragraph he’d spent six hours writing. Diagonally opposite, a girl was biting her lip and frowning. Just received an email from her tutor that provided absolutely zero help. The boy beside Yvie swigged from his second energy drink of the day. Right on the tailend of a brutal all-nighter for an essay he has to hand in at midday. It was peak uni, and she loved it.

Giving herself a shake, she turned back to the laptop screen. She had to get this finished so she could get a prototype done by at least the end of the week, and that would be one less thing to do on her now-mountainous list of deadlines. The minutes ticked by and she began to make slow progress. The issue with Brooke studying Fashion and Design was that she was a complete perfectionist and an overthinker, which was both a blessing and a curse when it came to designing things. The essays she could do- they were just her opinions backed up with some articles, and she could fire them off easily enough. Designing was trickier, and that was a problem considering it was what Brooke wanted to do when she left uni.

She was distracted by a flailing beside her from Yvie and a completely speaking-volume pitched “Oh my God” which was deafening on the silent floor. Brooke cringed as the pair received another judgemental look and Yvie tapped her finger against Brooke’s phone rapidly.

“Check the chat. Now,” Yvie not-quite-whispered, Brooke immediately following her instruction. A sick feeling built in her stomach as she opened up her phone, not knowing what to expect or if it was good or bad. She needn’t have worried though, as she opened the chat and saw what was there.

Plastique Bague: so um

Brooke clamped a hand to her mouth as a selfie of Plastique and her flatmate Ariel, naked from at least the chest up with the duvet over their chests, filled the screen. Plastique was pulling a comical smile and throwing up the peace sign, and Ariel was doing the same, but mid-laugh. Brooke looked to Yvie, who burst out into a hushed laugh.

“Oh my God,” Brooke gasped. She was close with Plastique- they’d been on the same course since first year- but she’d had no idea that Plastique even liked girls, never mind having designs on the girl she lived with. Brooke expressed this to Yvie, who snorted and rolled her eyes.

“Bitch, really? I’m starting to think it’s a legal requirement of our friendship group to be at least 20% gay.”

Brooke thought about the most boy-crazy, thirsty bitch she knew. “Silky?”

“Oh come on, we all know Silky would go there with Akeria if she was drunk enough,” Yvie shook her head, Brooke rubbing her forehead and trying to stop the conversation going down a path she didn’t want it to take. She looked back at the chat. There had been fifty new messages in the space of about three minutes.

Brooke turned away from her phone and looked at Yvie who looked back at her and laughed. Brooke screamed silently, her mouth wide.

“I can’t believe that’s happened,” she said, her voice excited but controlled in the silence of the library.

“It’s like…the juiciest thing to happen to any of us in months,” Yvie bounced in her chair, her laughter getting ever so slightly louder and causing more heads to turn at the odd sound. Opposite them, a boy got up and left.

“I’m so proud of her. I didn’t think she had it in her.”

“What, Ariel’s fingers?”

“Oh my GOD-” Brooke suddenly burst out laughing, her face flushing red as she watched the people around her grow more and more irate. She dropped her volume. “So that’s why nobody heard from her all weekend? I just thought she was too hungover to move.”

“What do you think will happen? I mean, it is her flatmate, she’s kinda screwed if things get awkward.”

“I’m gonna ask her. No!” Brooke exclaimed, thumping her table lightly. “I’m going to mute the chat and actually do some work.”

Turning to her phone in preparation to be responsible, her heart gave a little leap.

Yvie turned to Brooke, fluttered her lashes and raised an eyebrow. “I’m gonna be the best wingwoman in the world because I’ve gotta leave for a lecture, so this seat is allll Vanessa’s.”

Brooke smiled, blushed, and mouthed a thank you at her, before hopping back onto the chat.

Vanessa responded with six heart eye emojis. In the space of ten minutes, Yvie was gone and Vanessa was striding across the fourth floor of the library like Ariana Grande opening a concert, huge camouflage coat almost-but-not-quite covering her dark blue skin-tight ripped jeans and her oversized Rihanna jumper.

Her face lit up as Brooke leant back in her chair and gave her a wave as she stretched. “Hey Brooke Lynn!”

Brooke was relieved to find Vanjie using at least an attempt at a whisper, even though it still drew a couple of looks her way. She felt her heartbeat heavy in her chest as Vanessa leant forward and gave her a hug. “Hey girl. How are you?”

“Big time shook over the whole Plastique shit, can you believe it?!” she gasped, Brooke amused at how full of almost childlike amazement her expression was. “What do you think’s gonna happen there? I think Ariel’ll be down for it to happen again but maybe Plastique will start to panic and overthink once the high of her fifty fuckin’ orgasms wears off. I mean it is her flat so if things get really awkward she can always evict her. That’s a joke, by the way. Laugh.”

Brooke gave a quiet chuckle as Vanjie reached inside her bag and produced a tiny, lightweight Macbook with a purple galaxy cover. “I thought you were here to do work.”

“I was, then you started talkin’ to me and distractin’ me,” she raised her eyebrows disapprovingly. Brooke gave a cry of incredulity and Vanessa cracked up laughing. Opposite them, a girl got up and left. Brooke wondered just how long it would be until they evacuated the entire floor. “Kidding. Of course. Nah, I need to start my essay, it’s due Friday. It’s like two thousand words, though, I should be fine.”

“Two thousand, Jesus. I forgot it’s a fucking Mickey Mouse degree you do,” Brooke rolled her eyes, Vanessa slapping her on the arm. “Hey! I can joke too, see! Laugh, bitch.”

Brooke smiled as Vanessa pressed her lips together in a smirk, looking every inch the disgraced, told-off student. It made Brooke involuntarily squeeze her thighs together. Suddenly, she felt a pair of eyes on her and looked up to see a girl with huge lips full of filler, that had taken the chair that the boy opposite her had vacated. She was giving Brooke and Vanessa a dirty look, as if to convey the information that her degree was much more important than theirs, and could they kindly keep the noise down? Brooke cast a glance to Vanessa to see if she’d noticed. She had. An idea coming to her, Brooke ripped a page out her notebook and grabbed one of her coloured pens, scribbling down in her messy writing.

She then folded it and pushed it towards Vanessa, who eagerly pounced on it, opened it, and then grinned. Shuffling around in her bag for a pen, she typed her password into her laptop and then wrote back.

Brooke ran her tongue over her teeth as she looked back at the girl opposite her and snorted. She grabbed her pen again.

She slid the note across to Vanessa, who let out a stifled explosion of laughter into her hand, covering it up as a cough. She wrote back instantly.

Brooke sneaked another look at the girl, instantly noticing the two litre bottle of water on her desk. She bit down hard on her lip to keep from laughing, looked at Vanessa who shrugged smugly, and gave a squeak. Something occurred to Brooke and she wrote again on the piece of paper.

It’s not cranberry juice. Theory debunked.

She pushed the paper across the desk. Vanessa opened it, snorted, and wrote back.

Brooke couldn’t stop the giggle that bubbled out of her mouth. It wasn’t even that funny yet here she was, her stomach muscles aching from trying to hold in laughter like she was back in GCSE Biology all over again. Her outburst had attracted the attention of the girl opposite and she was staring at them both again, nostrils flared and eyes narrowed. Looking back to Vanessa, Brooke was shocked to find her staring the girl down, her hackles clearly up.

“What are you looking at?” the girl hissed across to her in a posh, affected London accent.

“Not fuckin’ much, apparently,” Vanessa shrugged, Brooke unable to help herself and suddenly doubling over in her chair, laughing loudly and openly in the silence of the library, Vanessa soon joining her. Brooke could feel almost everyone’s eyes on her and, for possibly the first time in her life, she wasn’t a single bit bothered. Was it because she was with Vanessa? Potentially. She didn’t want to say for sure.

Dropping her voice again as she looked back at the furious face of the girl she’d just insulted, Vanessa laughed and grabbed Brooke’s arm for a moment before bundling her laptop back into her bag. “C'mon bitch, we gotta go before someone kills us.��

The girls packed their bags as quickly as they could and sped down the stairwell, howling with laughter and gasping for air as they went. They dashed out of the lobby and out into the square, where they stood recounting the situation to each other for several minutes. As their laughter died down, all that was left was Brooke staring at Vanessa with a big dumb smile on her face and Vanessa smiling back at her, and Brooke swore she’d never been closer to kissing her in her life.

“Uh, so work went well,” Vanessa chuckled, rubbing the back of her neck in embarrassment. “Sorry I distracted you. And very possibly got us both barred.”

“Barred from the library? Shut up. I’m not sure that’s even possible.”

“We could make history, bitch! You never know,” she laughed, starting to walk slowly down the cobbled road that led toward the union. Brooke followed beside her, matching her pace. “Anyway after all that lack of work, I think I earned a drink.”

“Oh, of course,” Brooke said sarcastically, cocking her head and making Vanjie laugh bashfully.

“You wanna grab something?” she smiled up at her, a hopeful shine to her eyes making it virtually impossible to say no.

So ten minutes later Brooke found herself sat upstairs at a table for two with Vanessa opposite her, both of them sipping away at pints of Strongbow Dark Fruits and talking easily, the conversation flowing and making Brooke happy as if she was sitting in the sun on a hot day. There was a lull in the chat where Vanjie looked down through the bannister at the bar below them.

“It’s so crazy to think that without Silky, we might not have met,” she said quietly, then sort of looked at Brooke shyly and corrected herself. “All of us, I mean. Our friendship group.”

Brooke smiled, remembering the moment they all met back in first year. It had been a couple of weeks after freshers’ week and Brooke, Yvie and Nina had sort of all latched on to each other. They had decided to go out to the union for a night out, the three of them preing together in Brooke’s tiny room and ignoring the big party going on in their floor’s kitchen. It was only after they’d paid entry, grabbed a couple of blue VKs, and were dancing to some sort of cheesy Noughties song (either Move Your Feet by Junior Senior or Boom Boom Boom Boom by The Vengaboys- Brooke couldn’t remember) that Brooke and Vanjie’s friendship groups literally collided. Nina had been suddenly bowled over by a big girl crashing into her, her long, wavy black hair flying into her face and the force of her bumping into her sending Nina to the ground. Yvie had immediately squared up to her, her hot temper rendering her prepared to fight, but was held back by Brooke as another girl with straight, blonde hair (at the time it had been cut into a short bob) and bright, perfect makeup had cut in and apologised to Nina, helping her up from the sticky floor and explaining the whole thing had been her other friend’s fault, who’d been excitedly trying to jump on the girl to get a piggyback. The girl had offered to buy Nina, Brooke and Yvie drinks and they’d sat at the bar and chatted for a considerable amount of the rest of the night- introducing themselves as Akeria, Silky and Vanjie. That was really where Brooke’s crush had began, although she hadn’t known it at the time, as the two girls had talked drunkenly and excitedly opposite each other at the end of their table and formed one of those deep connections that Brooke considered rare to come by. That was how they had all become friends, Vanessa and Brooke swapping numbers and the rest of the girls taking their cue from there. Admittedly, there had been teething problems getting Yvie and Silky to gel, but they both seemed to decide to mature a little in second year- Yvie becoming less blunt and Silky becoming less bitchy- and they’d got on almost perfectly ever since. Brooke knew Yvie couldn’t stop herself from making the odd catty comment every now and then, and Vanessa would probably tell her the same about Silky.

Brooke took a sip, not trusting herself to look at Vanessa. “I’m so glad we met.”

“I know, I love our fucking useless squad,” Vanessa laughed in reply, affectionate. Brooke risked turning her head to look down at the paper coaster under her glass.

“No, I mean like us. You know. I love hanging out with you. In a weird way, I feel closest to you out of everyone,” Brooke shrugged, trying to keep her tone level. Why did she feel the need to say all of this? Probably because she was drinking cider on a nearly-empty stomach in the middle of the fucking day. She risked looking up. Vanessa smiled and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Aw, that’s cute. Really?”

“Well, yeah. Plastique and I obviously do the same course and we get on, but we don’t click as much as I do with you. Same with Nina and Yvie. Akeria and Silky I obviously love to death but they’re much closer with you than they are with me. Scarlet I-”

“- barely tolerate,” Vanessa cut in with a judgemental eyebrow, making Brooke cry out in protest.

“No! No, not at all, she’s sweet. Again though, she’s kind of Yvie’s friend first and all ours second. So…I don’t know. Yeah. I just feel closest to you, I guess,” she finished awkwardly, feeling her ears grow hot as Vanessa smiled back at her, happy.

“You’re adorable,” she cooed. She took a sip of her drink then shrugged. “I’d say I’m closest to Silk, though.”

Brooke yelled and thumped the table, causing it to wobble and both the drinks to slosh about in their glasses. Vanessa laughed, squeezing her hand quickly and then pulling it away. “Nah, I love us. I love our friendship, we’re so cute.”

Brooke felt something inside her fall. It was like toppling into bed after a long day and feeling the bounce of the mattress underneath her, the soft pillow against her cheek, the light scent of fabric softener. She tilted her head and looked at Vanessa warmly. The other girl gave a giggle and continued. “No, but like…it’s different to what I got with Silk and Akeria. It’s like we’re the same person, and we ain’t afraid to be open with each other, and sometimes we flirt but it’s like, you know, as friends? I think that’s why the girls always joke about us getting with each other and stuff. You know?”

Brooke suddenly felt as if there was a pane of glass forced between her and Vanessa. Christ, she’d been so stupid. She’d been worse than every sort of boy that girls complained about- building a friendship with a girl on the fact she had a crush on her, keeping everything going in the futile hope that maybe she liked her back. She was a total asshole. Brooke felt a bubble of panic rise in her throat, then pop as she saw the happiness in Vanjie’s eyes. And yet. Brooke, technically, didn’t know if Vanessa liked her back or not. And as much as her mind and common sense told her that she didn’t, Yvie’s constant insistence that she did gave her something to hang onto, a maybe, a what if.

Brooke realised she hadn’t reacted to what Vanessa had said. She nodded wordlessly. Vanessa suddenly frowned.

“Hey. You okay?” she asked her, laughing awkwardly. “Shit, I didn’t mean to put you in your feelings, boo, I’m sorry.”

“No, I uh,” Brooke shook her head, giving a laugh she hoped didn’t sound as fake as it felt. “I was just thinking about the whole Plastique and Ariel thing again.”

Vanessa smiled, then looked at Brooke with interest. “Would you?”

“Would I what, fuck a flatmate? No, never. Yvie and I would just bicker and laugh too much to ever take it seriously, and Nina would fucking tuck me in, bring me hot chocolate and read me a bedtime story.”

Vanessa burst out laughing, Brooke joining in and feeling a little better about things. Vanessa ran a finger around the rim of her pint glass. “Not fuck a flatmate, like…sleep with a friend. In general.”

Brooke narrowed her eyes. She wondered where this was going. Her eyes darted quickly to Vanessa’s glass. It wasn’t even three-quarters empty. “Well, it’d depend on the friend, obviously.”

Vanessa nodded, picking at her damp coaster and then flipping some hair over her shoulder. “I’ve thought about it with all of you bitches.”

Brooke choked on the sip of her drink she’d just taken. Vanessa quickly continued. “No, no, not like that! Just wondering what everyone would be like. Silky would terrify me. She says she’s a bottom but I think she’s really some sort of dominatrix that would physically torture you before fuckin’ you.”

Brooke held her stomach as she crumpled over with laughter. Vanessa continued.

“Yvie would be secretly bratty I think, that wouldn’t work.”

“How come? You’d end up slapping her?” Brooke laughed, choosing not to reveal the fact that she’d heard Yvie and the some of the girls she’d taken home through the walls of the flat and that she was just as intolerant of whining in the bedroom as she was in real life.

“Nah, because it’d just be us pouting and whining at each other for an hour and nothing would get done about it,” Vanessa laughed, a lick of heat suddenly tingling between Brooke’s legs.

“You are so not bratty in the bedroom,” she objected, trying to inject as much platonic humour into her tone as possible. Vanessa seemed to consider this.

“I have my moments, girl. I’m either bossy or bratty, there ain’t no in between,” she concluded, Brooke trying to push all thoughts out of her head and simultaneously restrain herself from asking further. “Akeria would put some fuckin’ R&B playlist on that’d be weird and unsexy and kill the mood. She actually does this, I’ve heard it through the walls. Don’t tell her I told you that, she’d kill me.”

Brooke pressed her lips together to keep from laughing and nodded. Without knowing what possessed her, she raised an eyebrow and leaned back in her seat. “What do you think I’m like? I’m curious.”

Vanessa held her gaze and it made the hairs on the back of Brooke’s arms stand on end. She paused a minute before she smirked and took a sip of her drink. “I think you put up this Lil’ Miss Perfect front in the daytime and then at night you’re a mess. Like you got your hair all over your face all nasty and you talk dirty.”

Brooke held her gaze, not giving anything away. The heat between her legs was now impossible to ignore. Vanessa laughed and kept going, her voice low and quiet and almost as if she was playing with Brooke.

“You are…such a perfectionist in real life that I think you’d die if you weren’t in control so you’re definitely a top. I feel like you have your moments though. Like sometimes you like getting dommed the shit out of. I don’t know, girl, am I getting warm?”

Brooke gave a quick smile before taking a long drink of her cider. Vanessa was looking at her intently, as if she couldn’t tear her eyes away. Brooke wondered if she’d been looking at her like that this whole time or if something had changed within the past five minutes. Putting her glass down, she shrugged. "Not telling.”

“Damn, well I guess I’m gonna have to find out for myself one day,” Vanessa shrugged, making Brooke’s heart give a start almost like it had been crashed into. And then the moment was gone as Vanessa laughed loudly, reminding Brooke that this was all just a joke to her, just a hypothetical conversation.

A conversation between two friends about fucking each other. That was perfectly normal.

Brooke’s phone pinged and Vanessa’s buzzed against the table, both girls peering to look at it.

Kim Kardashian-West: I HAD TO TEACH TEN YEAR OLDS ABOUT PARTICLES WHEN I COULD HAVE BEEN FINDING OUT THAT PLASTIQUE SLEPT WITH ARIEL????????

A LONG ASS LIST OF TIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL: FRESHMAN TO SENIOR YEAR LETS GO

Disclaimer: This is just from my experience, so these might not all apply to you!

Freshman Year

ok, ok, freshman year can be scary but don’t let that get to you

dont worry about upperclassmen being rude/teasing you

it’ll most likely happen, but I’ve never seen an upperclassman tease a freshman with the intention to really hurt them

one day you’ll be them so dw

on the topic of upperclassmen, make some older friends!!! (through classes, sports, etc.) it’s so nice to have someone give you tips and help you through high school

dont expect your friend group to stay the same lol

BUT ITS A GOOD THING I PROMISE YOU

I was scared of changing my friend group, so even though I wasn’t being treated too well, it wasn’t until senior year when I really made a change and I wish I did it earlier

be open to meeting new people, everyone is scared just like you and looking for more friends

I don’t think its neccessary for freshman to become sUPER involved in clubs and all that but at least get a feel for whats out there

try out for a sport if you play one!

this goes for all of high school, not just freshman year, but I regret not being as involved as I could’ve been

Go to school events like football games and dances! School spirit is considered weird in middle school but its cool in high school

take your classes seriously, your teachers are right - high school is much harder than middle school (but it’s not too bad if you stay organized!)

my freshman year GPA was my lowest like english really caught me off guard (properly formatted, 5 paragraph essays being 50% of your grade??? a concept.)

so my cumulative GPA was brought down

I think most freshman don’t have access to AP classes to boost your GPA or anything, but if you’re looking to push yourself take an honors class or 2! (if available)

Sophomore Year

wooohooo ur no longer a freshman

I’d take at least 1 AP class if you can

my sophomore year I took AP Human Geo - which I really loved, and it also wasn’t too hard

a lot of sophomores take AP World which is a BITCH of a class

BUT I wouldn’t recommend taking Honors World because you don’t get the GPA boost, you don’t get college credits (unless you take the AP Euro test or something), and it’s almost just as hard

this is a bit random - but when you’re taking Algebra 2 (which was my sophomore year) PLS PAY ATTENTION math builds on itself don’t fuck yourself over

take the PSAT if you want (I honestly don’t remember if I took it freshman year too but eh), but seriously its not required

start thinking about college (I know it’s the last thing you want to do)

just little things like

when do I want to take the SAT/ACT?

would I like a small school or a big school?

What will I be able to put on my college applications?

like if you do community service through a club/church/etc then great!!! sports? YEs

can’t think of anything? Join a club! Try out for a sport (it’s not too late) Find something that interests you

you’re probably pretty situated socially now but never be afraid to get to know those classmates/”school friends” better!

Junior Year

so junior year is commonly thought of as the hardest year of highschool

which is partially true (we’ll get there later)

but anyways, seriously buckle your seatbelt and get ready to work your ass off because THIS YEAR COUNTS, LADIES AND GENTS

Take AP classes if available

I took AP Psych (WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND) and Honors PreCalc (coming from regular Algebra 2)

Psych gave me college credit and a GPA boost

HPC gave me a GPA boost for UCs

It was a bitCH of a class but it made AP calc a breeze

If you haven’t started already, start prepping for SAT/ACT and then take them

tutoring is very helpful, but it can be expensive

I’ve seen studyblrs post about free prep through Kahn Academy and other stuff, so you might have to do a bit of digging but there are tons of resources out there

TAKE PRACTICE TESTS

take one of each first - then focus on the test you did better on

one of my biggest regrets is taking SAT prep instead of ACT prep because my ACT (which I didn’t do specialized prep for) ended up equivalent to my SAT (which I did prep for)

the more you take em the better you get

Studyblr is gr8 for finding test taking tips

If you’re not happy with your score, just take it again! I only took each one once but most people improve their scores if they take it again

I recommend visiting a few universities when you’re on break! Get a feel for what you like and what you don’t like (size, location, public/private, etc) and what kind of school you could get accepted to

you don’t want to end up applying to a billion schools that you wouldn’t even want to go to

private schools like it when you express interest by visiting

so if you’re visiting, make sure you check in so you can be in their system

END OF JUNIOR YEAR - ASK FOR LETTERS OF REC NOW! BY THE FIRST WEEK OF SENIOR YEAR A LOT OF TEACHERS ARE ALREADY TAKING ON TOO MANY LETTERS!

Senior Year (buckle up this section is the longest)

but YAY UR A SENIOR

DO FUN SENIOR YEAR THINGS like my school has all kinds of events for seniors and it’s so great

Remember when I said junior year is the hardest? Yeah well no... 1st semester senior year is SO MUCH WORSE ur in for a lot of fun

Ok seriously - don’t let senioritis get to you first semester

Still take challenging classes! Schools are looking for progression in difficulty

Those mid year transcripts REALLY DO MATTER!

College apps, man

Make sure you’re communicating with your counselor to make sure you have everything ready and on track

like file the FAFSA and CSS (used for lots of privates)

tbh I didn’t think it would help me a lot but it (the CSS) actually did so just do it even if you think you’ll get nothing

Ok so hopefully at this point you have a feel for what schools you are interested in

Things to consider: location, price, size, public/private, difficulty of the application, ranking, program/major you are applying to, campus, overall vibe

I didn’t do any interviews but maybe look into it

Don’t get too comfortable and set reasonable goals - apply to several safety schools, a few good options/could go either way schools, but also a few “reaches”

ESSAYS

I’m no college counselor, but don’t just wing your essays without having an adult/professional look over them

I got lucky - my mom is a professional writer so my family didn’t pay for a counselor

Do your research - you can find so much information about what schools are looking for in essays

If an essay is “optional” DO IT it’s really not optional lol

Keep in mind - these essays are nothing like what you’ve been taught. You don’t have to (and often SHOULDNT) write a 5 paragraph essay with topic sentences relating back to the thesis and evidence, etc. its much more free

think “What is the story I am going to tell?”

get creative - this is hard and takes some time

Think: How am I going to separate myself from thousands of applicants? What is a story that ONLY I can tell?

DO EARLY ACTION FOR AS MANY SCHOOLS AS POSSIBLE!!!

such a relief to knowing you got in somewhere in like,,,, november

acceptance rates are higher for EA

the order from highest to lowest is ED > EA > RD

Early Decision scares me (schools will say they give equal scholarship consideration but lol thats a lie)

but if you have your heart set on a school go ahead

def the most difficult and mentally draining part for me lol

make sure you really map out everything to consider

net cost (tuition, room & board, books, travel, personal expenses, etc.), size, location, etc.

I personally had this idea that I’d end up at a big school far from home but I’m going to a small school close to home and I’m still super excited!!! So make sure you give every school a second look

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS!

the essays aren’t usually too bad and sometimes you can just rework your college app essays

you can find them online, your school might have some (like PTA scholarships, band scholarships, etc.)

ok this is the time everyone really gets senioritis

i almost didn’t get senioritis at all lol just because slacking off stressed me out

but please be smart about it dont get rescinded

and lastly have fun! high school really does fly by, it’ll be over before you know it

“That sounds an awful lot like a date,” your best friend said when you told her about your study session with Harrison.

You rolled your eyes. “Every meeting with a boy sounds like a date to you.”

“Okay, but you said this Harrison guy was really cute, so cute boy plus pizza plus “studying” at his place equals a date. I’m not a math major, but that’s some pretty solid math.”

You sighed. “Look, I need to pass both my English lit classes, so if your girl has to do some sexy stuff to get his help, you bet I’ll do it. And I wouldn’t complain if he insisted on thanking me for being a brilliant math teacher.”

Your best friend laughed. “Wouldn’t that be something. Fucking a cute English major to get better grades. Maybe I should get a tutor. It sounds like the university is playing matchmaker.”

“But babe,” you teased with a smirk. “You’ve already fucked 90% of the guys in the school!”

She pursed her lips. “It’s actually only 75%, thank you very much.”

You stuck your tongue out at her. She knew you could care less who she slept with as long as she was safe, and she had a good sense of humor about it.

But sleep with Harrison? You hadn’t really thought about it. Yet, that is. He was stunningly attractive, but he was also incredibly intelligent, and you loved that about him. You’d slept with guys before, sure, but it had been a long time since you felt an emotional, intellectual attraction to someone. You liked the way Harrison thought; he was analytical but not like you were. He didn’t look for formulas and patterns and numbers, he looked for meaning, which excited you, but also was quite intimidating.

Saturday came around and you drove yourself to Harrison’s apartment. You were nervous. You kept telling yourself that you and Harrison were just studying and that was it, but ever since your best friend had mentioned fucking Harrison, you couldn’t get the images out of your mind.

Harrison on his knees in front of you, his hair and blue eyes between your legs. Being on your knees in front of Harrison, staring up at him. Him hovering over you, fingers dancing against your skin. You shook the images out of your head the best you could as you knocked on his apartment door.

Another boy who was not Harrison but was still incredibly attractive opened the door. “Hey, you must be (Y/N)!” he greeted cheerily.

“Yeah! Is, uh, is Harrison home?”

“Yep, he’s getting out of the shower right now. I’m Tom, Harrison’s roommate.” He stuck his hand out and you shook it. “C’mon in!”

You walked in and took the place in. It was light and warm and comforting. You loved it.

“You guys have such a nice place!” You called as Tom scurried to a bedroom.

“Thanks, I decorated it myself,” Harrison’s voice said. You turned and there he stood, gray t shirt clinging deliciously to his arms, athletic shorts low on his hips, his hair still wet, and barefoot.

“Oh,” you said softly. You mentally slapped yourself for your reaction. You weren’t expecting Harrison to look so damn good in basic clothes.

“Oh to you too,” he said with a chuckle. “Pizza’ll be here in like 45 minutes.”

You cleared your throat and diverted your eyes from Harrison. “Good, I’m starving!”

You stood awkwardly until Harrison said, “You don’t have to stand the whole time, (Y/N). You can sit.”

You laughed nervously before sitting down on his couch. You dug your fingernails into your palm, trying to refocus yourself. “Sorry, I’m a little off today. What’s your test on?”

Harrison sat down next to you. You could feel the heat from his body radiating toward you. “Derivatives and their applications. Here, my teacher gave me a study guide.” He handed you a crisp piece of paper loaded with terms, definitions, and formulas.

“Okay, so should we just start from the beginning?” You offered. You reached for your backpack and produced your notebook. You preferred to write things down, especially when showing him math problems.

“Sounds like the best place to start,” Harrison said. He smiled softly at you and your heart pounded. You breathed deeply, then began to draw a graph.

Thank God for numbers. Harrison was much less distracting when you were thinking of numbers and how they interact with each other. They were clear cut, with rules that they followed, equations they were governed by. No emotions or feelings involved.

Or so you thought.

You were explaining the second derivative test to Harrison when his hand snuck its way onto your thigh. Your words stumbled a bit, but you continued to draw out your sign chart to determine if the graph was concave up or down.

He scooted over closer to you. He sat sideways on the couch, facing you, while you sat the correct way, facing the television in front of you. He leaned down and placed a soft kiss on your bicep, and you froze.

“Harrison? What are you doing?” You asked. Surprise made your voice sound angry, and Harrison looked scared.

“Fuck, you’re not into me,” he said, scooting back. “Oh, fuck, I’m so sorry, I’m such an asshole. I’ve ruined it now.”

“Oh,” you said. Your face felt furiously hot. “Oh, oh no, Harrison, I’m very much into you. I just wasn’t expecting that. I, uh, get really wrapped up in math.”

His eyes widened and his face brightened. “Seriously? You’re not saying that because you feel bad, right?”

“Oh, not at all,” you squeaked in disbelief. “I think you’re extremely attractive. I just about fell over when you came out of the bathroom.”

“Thank fuck,” Harrison said. He then leaned over, gently grabbed your face, and kissed you.

You shoved your notebook out of your lap and clambered into his lap, keeping your lips on his. His hands slid down your body and landed on your ass. You silently thanked your best friend for insisting you wear jeans that made you ass look incredible.

Your hands trailed over his chest, tugging on the fabric. He reached his arms over his head and allowed you to pull his gray t-shirt over his smooth body. You threw it behind him, mouth immediately finding his collarbones. You ground your body down on his, feeling his cock start to harden beneath you. It brushed against your core and you moaned into his skin.

He returned the favor, tugging your shirt over your head to reveal your lacy black bra. You grabbed his hands and moved them to grab your breasts. He took the hint and began to massage them. He groaned at the feeling of them in his large hands.

“You’re not too shabby yourself,” you giggled back, dragging your hand through his hair. You softly scratched at his scalp while he touched you.

Suddenly, Tom’s door opened. “Hey, H,” he called. “Pizza’s here, I just got the text.”

You and Harrison froze. Tom emerged from his room to see you straddling Harrison. Thankfully, all he did was laugh.

“Alright, H, I see ya. I’ll take my pizza and I’ll get outta here,” Tom chuckled.

Your face felt hot and you buried it into Harrison’s shoulder. “God,” you whispered to him.

“I’ve caught Tom in much worse situations,” he whispered back. “One time I caught him mid-blowjob. The poor girl giving it to him ran out crying.”

You laughed into his skin, suddenly feeling much better about your reaction.

A/N: @weird-emo-human I’m so so so sorry love, I just went back through my messages to find our thread and I realized I had given you a different date then when it was really gonna be up! I hope you like it!

Word Count: 1195

Summary: Theodore is pretty sure he’s never met anyone like you before. Problem is, you’ve met too many people like him and are tired of them all.

Warnings: Mentions of past abusive relationships and a depressed reader. Unintentional mentions of self-harm. I didn’t mean to make it sound like that but as I reread it it really did soooo.

You sat in the back of the class, fiddling with your quill. You had tired of hearing about the goblin wars, and were bored out of your mind. Binns voice droned on and on about “Mistreatment of magical beasts”, and, “Discrimination against non-humans”, and your eyes slipped in and out of focus. That is, until a boy in front of you leaned a bit too far back in his chair, and tipped over, hitting his head on your desk. Your eyes went wide as almost everyone in the class turned to stare at the two of you, except for Binns who somehow didn’t hear the boy’s skull practically splitting open. He rushed up and resumed his position leaning back on his chair blushing like mad, pretending like he didn’t just fall over. After all of the commotion had settled, the view of the carving you were making on your desk was obstructed as a hand placed itself right on top of your initials. You slowly raised your head to meet the eyes of Theodore Nott, the idiot who had tipped too far back in his chair.

“Y/L/N, did you catch what he was saying about a minute ago?” You rolled your eyes.

“Nope, the sound of your hollow head hitting my desk at light speed kind of drowned out the idiot we call our teacher” You shoved his hand off of your desk and continued carving your initials into the soft wood. His face fell but only for a second, he regained his cocky composure almost immediately.

“Wow, two people in one sentence, whose side are you on?”

“The side that you aren’t” You snapped.

“God, why are you so mean to me? What the bloody hell have I ever done to you?” He shrieked, and you shushed him, not wanting everyone in the class to know that you were, yet again, willing yourself to fall for tricks like his. Every single person you had met that was like him, cocky, arrogant, narcissistic, had reeled you in, and you had eventually learned to stop taking the bait. Knott had been trying for your attention for months now, since the start of term, and now, in mid March, you were over having to avoid him.

You were opening your mouth to fire back at him, but the bell sounded and there was a rush of students trying to wedge out of the door all at once. You seized your opportunity and raced through the sea of people and right through the door. He shoved his things into his bag and ran to follow you. All he saw was the flash of green from the inside of your robes as you whipped around the corner. He ducked down the hallway that you had gone through and found you inhabiting an empty classroom, pulling out an apple and starting on your potions essay.

He stepped over the threshold, and your head snapped up.

“For Christ’s sake, not you again” you groaned, knowing you couldn’t escape.

“I just want to know what I did.”

“You didn’t do anything yet, I’m pushing you away so that you won’t do anything.”

“What the bloody hell does that mean?!”

“It means that every single one of you lot that I’ve ever met has screwed me over!”

“You lot? What the hell do you think we are, a tribe? And who are we?”

“You guys who think you can get with anyone! I swear, every single time I let you guys in you push me around and think that you can walk all over me! I’m sick of it! I don’t need anyone else hurting me, I do it enough myself!”

(Y’all can take that however, I didn’t necessarily mean self-harm but now that I reread this it sounds like I did. I really meant negative thoughts since that’s what really hurts me the most. :/ )

He was stunned into silence. The one person who he had thought wasn’t ever affected by anything, turns out she was the one hurting the most. The only way she could cope was to shut everyone like him out of her life. He understood why she had done it, but he was also determined to break through her emotional barriers, he wanted to make her feel loved.

He knew what his reputation was. He knew he was known as that one flirty guy who hung out with the school arsehole. He knew all of that but never thought it would prevent him from getting close to the people he loved. He wanted to find the guys that had hurt her and hurt them ten times harder. He had loved her for while now. She was always there, just filling in the scenery, a background character. He enjoyed a girl who didn’t push herself chest-first into the spotlight. Those were the only girls that he was ever told to make friends with, away from their parents they weren’t such perfect angels. He was upset that someone with her personality and character wasn’t treated with more respect. She was a person, not a toy. Not a punching bag. He had seen the bruises but it’s not hard to overlook bruises when you play quidditch. He had just assumed a bludger had clipped her arm on the way past her.

He realized now that they were from previous relationships and he wanted so badly to fix that. He wanted to be the one to hold her, why did those tossers get to?

He slipped into the desk next to you, mustered up as much courage as was humanly possible, and cupped your face, turning it to meet his eyes. Your eyes darkened and you went to pull back, uncomfortable with the contact. He didn’t let you, but loosened his grip so that he for sure wasn’t putting too much pressure on the bruise underneath your cheekbone. He took a deep breath, leaned in and brushed his lips against yours. Your breath hitched, and you looked into his eyes.

Screw It, you thought, and inched your lips forward to meet his. He reciprocated immediately, your lips moving in sync with each other.

“Y/L/N! Nott! What are you doing in here?!” You turned to the door to see a very red Flitwick, trying to make himself taller my “subtly” standing on his tiptoes. You both stifled laughs, and Nott laced his hand with yours, leading you out of the classroom and to the Slytherin common room.

28. "Marry me."

It had started off as a joke, really. Way back when Kyle was trying to renew his FAFSA for sophomore year and realized the difference.

"If I asked you to marry me," he said to Hugo one night, mid financial talk. They were back in Hugo's bedroom at his parents house, pne of the rare weekends they could both afford to come home and spend time together. He was curled around him, had an arm around his waist and his cold nose in the back of his neck. His voice was joking. "Would you say yes?"

"Probably," Hugo replied. Kyle could tell his eyes were shut and his nostrils had flared in that way they did when he thought something was funny, but was too tired to laugh.

"Might need you to if my grant doesn't come through."

"It will," he murmured, already on the fringes of sleep.

The next time it had happened - or rather, the next time of substance - was a few months later. He was all set up in his new dorm room - housing indeed paid for by that very grant that had sparked the whole running joke - and it was Hugo's turn to make the trip from his college to Kyle's, instead of the other way around.

"Hey, babe," he said, spinning away from his desk to look over at Hugo, who was sprawled across his XL Twin bed with his phone held above his face to dutifully stay silent while Kyle wrote the conclusion to his essay.

"You done?"

"Nah, not yet."

"What's up?"

"If I asked you to marry me, would you say yes?"

"Why this time?"

Kyle took the rebuff in stride, having already had a genuine answer. "You know that movie with Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence? The one they always played on ABC Family?"

"Hold on-" Hugo said as he sat up quickly, his curls bouncing around his head. "This is a My Fake Fiancé scenario?"

"Listen," Kyle started back in, his hands coming up in front of him. "It could work. Also, I saw this immersion blender the other day and like-"

With an amused, terribly fond scrunch to his nose, Hugo proclaimed, "You're such a fucking dork."

The third of great substance, because there'd been so many little ones that anyone would lose count, was far less happy than any of the rest.

Existential crises, Kyle had said over text, are one hell of a drug.

Hugo had promptly replied with ??? and it went on from there.

kyle: i just. i dont know this asshole thts probably named fucking thad or something equally as dumb said some dumb shit to me after class today? and i cant get it out of my head

hugo: hey whatever he said, its not true- do you want me to call you?

kyle: i dont know if i can rlly keep it together rn babe

hugo: are you crying?

kyle: like. 10% its no biggie

hugo: honey :(

kyle: if i asked you to marry me would you say yes

hugo: in a heartbeat

It was the closest thing Kyle had ever gotten to yes.

It wasn't the last time, not by far, but it was the end of an era, the beginning of a new one.

They were graduated, post college by six months a piece, living together in a shitty apartment that they loved in the way cat people loved their cats, as in: "this is our apartment, her name is Asshole, she's a holy terror but we love her and you can't tell us shit about her."

Kyle was still in bed because it was Sunday and he didn't have a shift and fuck getting out of bed before noon, y'know?

But Hugo was standing at the dresser in nothing but long plaid PJ pants that obviously belonged to Kyle. He was rifling through his sock drawer, muttering to himself.

Kyle traced the freckles on his back, a lazy smile on his face, leisirely pace to his movements. Hugo was bathed in buttery sunlight, and Kyle loved him.

"Hey," he called, voice still thick and marred with sleep. "Hey, Hugs."

Hugo scoffed the same way he had since they were eighteen at the nickname. "What is it?"

"If I asked you to marry me," he said patiently. "Would you say yes?"

It took Hugo a long minute to turn around, and when he did, his face was one of exasperated anguish. "You had to ask that right now? You couldn't have waited two minutes?"

Kyle's face scrunched up, having never gotten a response like that, he was sufficiently taken aback.

"What? Why?"

"Because," Hugo bemoaned, dropping his knees onto the mattress and shimmying over. "It makes it sound so much less original when I do my thing."

Kyle quirked a brow, until Hugo raised his clenched hand up to reveal a plain little black velvet box.

"If I asked you to marry me," he said, holding the box out between them. "Would you say yes?"

Smartly, Kyle replied, "I'm sorry, what?"

"Marry me," he repeated, popping the lid on the ring box to show a simple silver band that if you inspected closely, had an inscription on the inside.

"Oh. I, yeah, oh." His brain wasn't firing all cylinders, the cogs were gumming up, he'd planned everything so perfectly, and yet Hugo had still beat him to it-

"Kyle?"

Quickly, Kyle fumbled at his pillow, shoving his hand into the pillowcase, and unzipping the zipper on the actual pillow - allergen shield, baby. He rooted around againt the actual pillow before finally extracting his own box.

"Are you seriously trying to steal my proposal right now?"

"Are you complaining?"

There were tears brimming in Hugo's eyes as he said, "No, you dumbass- how long has that been in there?"

"Forever. I knew I could leave it there 'cause you never make the bed," Kyle said with a wet laugh, hand coming up to smudge his own tears.

"Jesus, Kyle."

"I think someone has to say yes or we're just gonna be in stalemate forever."

"I proposed first, you have to say it first. Technically, you didn't even propose, so really-"

"Yeah, of course I'll marry you."

"I'll marry you too."

Kyle had to resist the urge to tug nervously at his cufflinks as he recited his vows.

"I used to ask you, all the time, if I were to ask you to marry me, would you say yes. And it started out as a joke, but I think I realized, even when I was that dumb eighteen year old, I think I realized even then that I meant it. I love you, Hugo, and even if I didn't realize it way back in the beginning, my heart did - it's loved you from the start. So, I stand here before you, in front of our whole family, not just blood, but the one we found along the way too - whether it be Kiera, or Pheebs, Asher - for some reason - or our literal high school English teacher, the man whose class started it all for us - I stand before all of them, and I ask you one last time, in more words than ever before, if you'd like to spend the rest of your life with me, and before you give me you answer, I'll give you mine: I do."

Hugo was pushing tears away with the back of his hand, muttering something about how he'd had to get Kiera to help him with his vows, and yet he'd still blown him out of the water. But he nodded. And he recited his own vows. And on a sunny day, in the crispness of fall, Kyle Bellamy and Hugo Hansen became the Bellamy-Hansens, and they finally gave the simplest answer to the age old question, no hesitation in either of their declarations.

If I asked you to marry me would you say yes?

Yes.

AY2019/2020 Y1S2 Module Reviews

AY2019/2020 year 1 semester 2 review

Wew this semester was more of a honeymoon period for me still since I cant advance past CS1010S - this is only the first CS mod i have to take big oof. First half of the sem was spent mostly on (re)doing CS1010S AFAST and the rest went to catching up on other modules that are of relatively lower intensities compared to modules i imagine i will have to take next semester? The most challenging mods this sem goes to CS1010S, EC1301 and also.. ST2334? About half of the semester was done at home though due to the COVID-19 pandemic and so the never-ending heap of online lectures to review (for which i am always behind on unfortunately). I have no need to S/U any module this sem fortunately but that also means I might have effectively wasted my last COVID S/Us. I’m also the kind that is happy enough just to pass.

Since i took the alternative finals i have updated the final weightage for this module (last sems CS1010S had different weightages).

As we already know, this module (or any CS modules in general) easily has the highest workload compared to other modules, except this time without needing to complete missions every week? Also since its a re-module, there were no lectures/tutorials/recitations for this module and the prof spent lesser time than the first module with us. There is just one consultation slot per week that lasts about 1.5-2h, where the TAs/ prof Ben goes through exam questions over the past years and where students get to voice any doubts they might have. Hence, a lot of self-discipline is required on our part to grind past year papers consistently and drill our brains. Not sure if i’ve mentioned this before, but it’s nice of them to provide comprehensive worked solutions for about 50 exam papers (or maybe more) the profs claimed it was the only module in NUS to be doing this. Prof mentioned he was a bit disappointed in our batch as many werent putting in considerable effort right from the start aka ponning consultation slots arranged over the holidays (in December) - which is a lot of effort coming from the professor to arrange this just for our batch (first batch of CS1010S AFAST). Just name me any prof who does this for their students, coming back over the holidays to teach unpaid. Those who were not at level 50 in Coursemology had more time now to finish the missions/side-quests needed to achieve level 50 and get the full points for Coursemology (as we were expected to in Sem 1). Things were a bit rusty after the holidays at the start but it became better with practice. Was a bit disappointed at not being able to get question 2 right during the written paper (finals) it was a bit of an IQ-ish problem solving question. Anyways winged the 4m what-did-you-learn essay question (as usual) at the end as a saving grace and passed albeit by a very bit. I improved by 2 marks ?? compared to the last semester for finals, not the nicest thing to see after so much effort being put in but still. I think I’m just better at writing essays than coding....

Results for the PE

Mean is 14. Median is also 14. Standard Deviation is 7.6. Highest grades was 30/30 Question 1 turned out to be harder than we had intended, but Q2 was quite easy and most of Q3 was doable by most, as you can see in the results. Passing mark for PE is roughly 10/30.

Mean is 51/10, median is 53/100 and standard deviation is 14.4. Highest was 81/100. Generally, the performance was much worse than we had expected. Pass grade for Finals is roughly 40/100.

Basically, if got 10/30 for PE and 40/100 for Finals and you have done your Coursemology assignments you can expect a C grade. If not, then prepare to SU. CS1010S is not graded on a curve. We set question to test that you have mastered certain concepts and your final grade is a reflection of what you seem to have mastered as reflected by your exam performance.

This whole module was done by recess week so we have more time to focus on other mods. Honestly will be happy enough just to pass. Now, how do i survive CS23030 and CS2040 rip.

GEH1031 Understanding the Universe

Ng is relatively a slower-paced lecturer, which is good for someone like me who cant keep up with faster-paced profs. 2x on her elearning lecture videos makes the best pace imo. Her lecture slides are concise and simple, and will suffice in revision. While she does explain more in depth especially for concepts that are harder to grasp (not many) during the lecture i love that she keeps her lecture slides straight forward to the point. Everything was in point form, short and sweet much appreciated. Also if you pay attention to her lectures, you will do well for the quizzes at the end of each chapter for sure. Though i think you get the marks for quizzes as long as you did them before each deadline like participation marks kinda (?) rather than being graded on whether you answered them correctly. I didn’t do too well for term test 2 unfortunately and I also only just found out you can display the statistics of where you place among the cohort in LUMINUS and needless to say I didn’t place too well. It’s a relatively manageable module though there’s still a lot of content. Term test 1 consisted of MCQs and about 3 2m questions which she call “essay questions” which can be misleading for some (like me!). The MCQs are very tricky and most come in the format of these options: is A/ is not A/ is B/ is not B and you have to pick the right combination (2) out of these 4 options to score 1 point, which of course means less chances of getting them correct compared to the usual 25% in a typical MCQ. Term test 2 was held on LUMINUS at home, and this time since its an e-exam there was only 10mins to do about 25 MCQ, leaving only 0.4 minutes = 24s for 1 MCQ, which proved to be really stressful for many as voiced out by other cohort mates in the forum section (so very valid). The e-exam also had an essay component, 2m per question with 4 questions under 10 minutes. The implementation of this time constraint was to prevent cheating but the duration given was (I feel) unreasonable. As for the video presentation, we had to come up with a 7 min (at most) video most of which lasts 5/6mins on a news article in 2020 regarding astronomy. We had to form groups of 3 at the start of the semester, and were told to look for members on the forums if we did not have enough members. It is not necessary to show your face so you can be creative! For my group, we had a Germany graduate exchange student to work with us which was really cool. Our group’s theme was NASA’s discovery of exoplanets with the use of TESS which was wrapped up in March, before the deadline in April. Really thankful for him to prompt us each week for progress and have it done and over with instead of rushing it last minute when things get busy during reading week. (I think the guy was really done with us im so sorry Philipp if you are reading this.) Also since term test 2 was done by mid-April we had more time allocated for other modules to prepare for finals (swee). Video critiques were supposedly 50 words long if i remembered correctly but i didnt find out until i hit the submit button and :_D i left 1/2-liners for each. One of the criteria of this video critique was showing that you have watched the videos of other groups well but i dont rmb my critiques proving that ive watched the videos carefully though i really did. I think our group did the best in our cluster though! (based on the critiques). For the astrophotograph, we could take part in the astronomy sessions held on a Friday of every month to use the telescopes but there wasn’t any this semester sadly due to the pandemic.

GES1041 Everyday Ethics in Singapore

Chin’s lectures are pretty enjoyable, his voice/tone really suits lectures. He is a very approachable person too and willing to share a lot of experiences relevant to the topic at hand. He includes snippets of related videos in his slides many of which are insightful that made me share with my friends too. There is a total of 4 main themes in the module which are namely inequality, meritocracy, multiculturalism and migration and he also introduced the use of an ethical toolbox to helps us reach a more definitive thought process especially for an abstract topic like philosophy. I didn’t realise this was a philo mod when bidding for it so I was really surprised when i went for the first lecture (like bro it clearly says ETHICS what was i thinking). I also thought it would be something similar to Social Studies but was proven wrong. There are compulsory readings to do each week, about 20 pages long usually per reading and they are all chapters from books written by other Singaporean philosophers regarding the themes gone through which helped to widen my perspectives and broadened my horizons, those were some really good selection of readings. I have learned more things than I previously knew about the foreign domestic workers, migrant workers, racism in Singapore among the many topics we have dealt with.

This module is for those who are :

Comfortable with reading a lot every week (i put a lot here because i dont usually read)

Comfortable with writing essays (journal entry) 500 words each

Proficient in English (some of the expressions used can be quite complex and may take you a much longer time to process and understand especially with the reading quizzes that tests your comprehension of the readings - really just comprehension in true GP fashion)

Have a lot of experience in this field, those under social work would have many and will be able to share relevant experiences in the journal entry

Interested about the aforementioned themes

Reading quizzes are like comprehension style questions: do your readings and the questions tests you on what you have read so you just have to look for evidence of each option, the questions will refer you to the specific page/reading that will guide you (nice of them to do so). Journal entries and reading quizzes occur on an alternative week basis so reading quizzes followed by journal then reading quiz again and so forth. Nearing the end, you will be grouped according to who you sit close with and you will work together with your group members to work on a project that will have 2 overlapping themes about any policies/ observations of Singapore. It is advisable for the scope to not be too broad. e.g. we chose to talk about offering Muslim food in school canteens vs non-Muslim food (fewer food options for Muslims) and this encompasses both the multiculturalism and inequality themes. The group report will be due before the presentation and it helps identify some main points you will then talk about later during the presentation. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group presentation this semester was done on Microsoft Powerpoint through voice-over slides. God bless, and there goes the need to memorise scripts especially with the finals season so near. The professor was really accommodating and gave us more time to prepare the voice-over slides when he announced that it will be held on powerpoint too. Finals was 20 MCQs in 1 hour on LUMINUS, the questions were similar to the reading quizzes (5 MCQs per quiz).

Can’t find the actual breakdown of scores sorry!

Bell-curve is really really steep for this one since its purely MCQ. Divided into micro and macroeconomics so first half of the sem was micro then the other half was macro. Finals was about 70% macro and 30% micro since micro was already tested for midterms. Every week, there’s a pre-lecture quiz to be done before the lecture and a post-lecture quiz due before the next lecture to reinforce your learning. There’s also supplementary readings that were given but i gave up on it by the third week. The way it is taught is a bit different from what I was used to in JC the things they focus on is also a bit different. There’s more calculations than JC whereas JC economics was more conceptual? I took only H1 economics so a lot of concepts were fresh for me like monopolism, comparative/absolute advantages, income elasticity etc. Both midterms and finals was held on Examplify with a lockdown on everything including wifi. The lecturer also provides additional practice questions in the form of quizzes nearing the exams instead of exam papers. To be honest, I felt this module was hard?? Not sure if anyone else felt the same way, it was a struggle.. I thought it was a fluff mod and boy was i very wrong about this. Also important thing to note is though this mod has MCQ-only exam, the MCQs are not 4 options but 6 options long with many tricky options and of course time constraint. Finals was 70/80 questions long in 1h iirc. Midterms was 40 questions. After the 3rd (?) tutorial, there was no more physical tutorials held just zoom tutorial sessions which only 3 ppl in my slot regularly attended. Towards the finals, a lot more zoom sessions were opened up and we could attend other TA’s zoom sessions this was a godsend thank you. My tutor wasn’t really clear in her explanations or maybe it is just me her accent came off a bit strong. I emailed her some questions but even now I have not receive any answers from her, she told me next week, and the next week became next next week and so on. I guess she must have had a lot on her plate. I didn’t think she was a good tutor. I flunked my midterms (5% percentile) so I was a bit dejected.

ST2334 Probability and Statistics

Prof was really funny and friendly. Although his tutorials left me confused (my friends would care to disagree), his lectures were still pretty good. He always emphasised knowing what we are doing rather than doing the math blindly. The tutor was fast in his replies whenever I asked him questions by email. This module is an extension of statistics in JC, probability and many more probability distribution (F, chi-square, t test, z test) with terms we have never encountered before too (unless you took BT1101 but this mod focuses more on deriving the values than having a program-R calculate it for you). Ever since the outbreak, the lectures were converted to e-lecture slide style but each lesson would take 4 lectures (4h), instead of the 2 lecture per week so we had to spend more time watching the videos than usual. It is easy to be behind on videos when there is only e-lecture videos so much discipline is required to stay on task.

Finals was proctored with zoom and held on Luminus in the form of a quiz. We were expected to scan and submit a pdf with our workings after the exam. I did not have time to finish about 8 questions (a lot of marks gone) there were a total of 30 questions, spent too much time in front on the easier questions. I did study for the later questions but had no chance to utilize what I have revised (sad). I am really dead for this module i hope i dont fail this.

Update. God bless, thought i was really doomed for because i lost so many marks from not being able to finish 8/30 questions that have the most marks rewarded. Guess i really took time to make less mistakes on the previous questions.

MKT1705X Principles of Marketing

Individual assignment questions (total of 5) for tutorials 1-3 are given at the start for which the tutor will go through in the allocated weeks. We get to choose the question we want to do and if that week, the question will be discussed that week will be the deadline for our IAs. The other questions in the IA do not have to be submitted but will be discussed in class. There’s class participation for this module so people were more eager than I was used to, to answer questions in class. I had no opportunity to though in this module (halfway into the semester it became elearning), the tutor had too many hands to pick. The tutor was very accommodating and knew our difficulties and was willing to work out compromise. However, her classes were centered mainly on her experiences (which can be a bit boring) it could have been better if she went through the content. Understand that it is a fluff module that requires many examples, but would be good to relate them back to the content we are expected to master. Tutorials are held every alternate week and we are expected to do the individual questions even if we do not need to submit so that we have something at least to share in class. Subject pool was giveaway marks basically do 6 research surveys and u will get the full marks for that. Final exam comprises of 3 essay questions (40m, 30m, 30m) that you have to submit in 1.5h (i thought it was 2h during the paper rip mad rush for the end), no references/research needed but there’s a plagiarism checker by TurnItIn on luminus basically testing the application of concepts to examples.

I got a B+ for group assignment, and A- for individual assignment. I think i can only do essay styled questions, is this a sign to do arts.....

Oh the presentation was changed to a one-shot video recording (no stitching of individual videos together) instead of an actual presentation in front of your tutorial mates. I think a lot of other groups also read off their scripts but ours was really obvious. The tutor grades (structures her own bell-curve) based on those who attempted the same question to be more fair rather than comparing among all the different questions so in a way, the difficulty of the questions won’t affect your grade.

Epilogue. this is probably the last and only time i could do this well.... even if it does not fit the conventional definition of doing well......

First impressions?

listen,,, i was such a bab when i first read this book,, and i 100% sided w pony and so my first impression of darry was just >:(

if i was to write down my full impression of darry i honestly think i’d give yall like a 50000 word essay in chicago style but suffice it to say that DARRY IS AMAZING and a million percent hes the most selfless person in the whole world and honestly the only NORMAL ONE like y’all can stan soda all u want but he still eats jelly and eggs im not About it

Favorite Moment? im gonna pick three because im an actual trash can,,,

There was an uneasy silence: Who was going to start it? Darry solved the problem. He stepped forward under the circle of light made by the street lamp. For a minute, everything looked unreal, like a scene out of a JD movie or something. Then Darry said, “I’ll take on anyone.”

“I’ll be okay,” I said wearily. “How come you never worry about Sodapop as much? I don’t see you lecturin’ him.“

“Man,”- Darry grinned and put his arm across Soda’s shoulders - “this is one kid brother I don’t have to worry about."

Soda punched him in the ribs affectionately.

"This kiddo can use his head." Sodapop looked down at me with mock superiority, but Darry went on: "You can see he uses it for one thing - to grow hair on.” He ducked Soda’s swing and took off for the door.

Two-Bit stuck his head in the door just as Darry went flying out of it. Leaping as he went off the steps, Darry turned a somersault in mid-air, hit the ground, and bounced up before Soda could catch him.

i don’t really know that there are any opinions i have about him that would be considered unpopular? r there still people who claim he’s abusive or are they like a cryptid now

Did they cry when their boys were arrested, like Evie did when Steve got hauled in, or did they run out on them the way Sylvia did Dallas?

this is the only line in the book where it talks about her doing something? like the only other lines are “we’re going to a game” and “she, along with the other rarely mentioned females in the book, are greasy like us, and the only girls we have a chance with.” so, se hinton, step up ur girl-writing game, it weak

Idea for a story?

i feel like she and sylvia would be rlly interesting together id love to see them like as tag-team scammers

evie is soft,,,, she is not like wild child sylvia (that’s why i feel like they’d be a good team,like sylvia gets her out on the town, evie stops her from stealing a stop sign or something)

Dally came striding back with an armful of Cokes. He handed one to each of the girls and sat down beside Cherry. “This might cool you off."

She gave him an incredulous look; and then she threw her Coke in his face. "That might cool you off, greaser. After you wash your mouth and learn to talk and act decent, I might cool off, too.”

literally any story where she isn’t shipped with anyone let her and marcia go on a crosscountry roadtrip where they take pictures at the grand canyon where they’re like “falling off the cliff lol scared u!”

i’m not sure if this opinion is actually unpopular or not but she was well within her rights to refuse seeing johnny at the hospital?? like i know this is debated a lot but she didnt owe him anything, no matter how much we love him, she doesnt have to

cherry x being true to herself (also a version of bob where he respects that she doesn’t like him drinking around her)

i honestly haven’t seen that many cherry headcanons? where are they? im just gonna say i totally believe in her as a beach lady

First impression?

i loved this boy so much like you dont even understand. the only person in the book i liked more than mark was charlie (im still angry)

“Make sure I hated you.”

Idea for a story?

An entire overhaul of the whole book where he doesn’t end up in jail, full of hate.

Unpopular opinion?

so i’m not 100% on what the general agreement is on mark, but my unpopular opinion is i understand where he was coming from. he was trying to make money for the household that took him in when his life fell apart, and bryon’s minimum wage job wasn’t cutting it, and he knew desperate times call for desperate measures. i don’t agree with it, but i get it, and for the 213537356623465752676th time, bryon could have talked to mark. they were close, and he might’ve been able to influence him, but he didn’t try.

Favorite relationship?

hhhhh i appreciated the mother/son bond between him and bryon’s mom? i can’t remember a lot about the nuances of this book, but whatever.

Favorite headcanon?

i honestly don’t know. im just v sad about him and i want him to grow up to have as normal and happy a life as he can manage when he got out of prison.
