Kunikida probably died, Bram's dead, Junichiro's about to maybe die, no sight of Sigma, Jouno, Tetchou, or Kenji, basically all of the LOV is the dead (we got Spinner in jail, Compress reading his book, and Dabi in the thingymabob), there are still hero rankings (why???) that fucker Gran Primo's alive (somehow) and my twitter account got blocked because I made a reference to a tweet that said "let's all kill ourselves".

hey! i haven't seen mha in a looong time and i've never payed attention to bakudeku (mostly because i'm not the biggest fan of bully romance), but i'd love to see your take/interpretation/analysis on it? i've been a really big fan of your svsss metas and so i just thought, "hey, you know what, i'm curious to see zykamiliah's take on a ship i've never been interested in from an anime that i haven't seen in years! maybe i'll see something?"

not too sure if you already made a post explaining it (so sorry if you did!), but i've seen enough of the sudden rise of bakudeku reblogs on my feed from your account to ignite my curiosity lol

i just really enjoy hearing about ships because they're an amazing opportunity to explore dynamics and perspectives i've never given much thought/thought about before (coming from a rare pair lover... oh gyx/lbg, my sweet...) so i'd love to see bakudeku, a ship i don't quite understand (yet!) in a more understanding, different, and interesting light! and in complete honesty i trust your judgement with insightful character and ship analysis stuff, so... yeah!

heeey jade! sorry for the wait, i've been busy with work and irl stuff :DDD but i'm here now!

where to even begin lol... well, it's important to note that the relationship between midoriya izuku, the protagonist, and bakugo katsuki, the deuteragonist, is one of the main narrative lines of the manga, at the very core of the story. katsuki is izuku's narrative foil, their character developments are intrinsically connected (specially katsuki's!), and the same can be said about the themes of heroism, of what makes a hero, who can be a hero, what type of hero society needs, or if it needs them at all, etc., questions that also tie to the evolution of their relationship.

so from the start i was sold on this dynamic because i really like relationships that are at the center of a story!! i also like relationships with a complicated history with lots of drama and ups and downs, and i like that each character has their own things going on in their lives even if they are connected and one of the most important persons in each other's lives. big big bonus guaranteed to get my full attention if they are obsessed with each other lol

the thing is, deku and bakugo are in a bad place when the story kicks in. bakugo isn't an active bully, in the sense that he doesn't constantly seek deku out to hurt him, but he IS horribly mean and hostile, and that's because for years he's felt threatened by deku (and deku's heroic qualities), and wants to push him away, because he also feels that deku is looking down on him. the story doesn't shy away from showing and acknowledging that bakugo's behavior is atrocious and needs to change, and it works towards it consistently: he eventually atones, apologizes, and changes. on the other side of the coin, deku has always been paying attention to bakugo and, despite how the latter treated him, would chase him, observe him to the point he has bakugo's moves memorized, takes inspiration from his fighting style and even imitates him to give himself courage to do something specially daring and when he wants to "win" more than "save"; bakugo is his image of victory, ever since they were kids.

i scrolled through my bkdk meta tag, since it's been yeeeeears since i was involved in the fandom, lol, and found this post that tackles the bullying issue specifically and makes some very good points, if you wanted to read it! :D

the manga eventually addresses the problems in their relationship in "Deku vs Kacchan 2" (chapters 117-119), at the time bakugo is feeling turmoils for the part he played in All Might's end. to the question of "why does deku chase and care about bakugo if bakugo is so mean to him?" ch 119 has deku answer that himself:

this fight is the turning point for their relationship, and for the rest of the manga their individual and dual development is mostly upwards. reading bnha is worth it, if anything, just for the beauty of bakugo katsuki's development.

another big aspect that got me hooked in their relationship from the very first anime episode (and first opening) is that they are

✨Childhood Friends✨

(strap in this is gonna get loooooooooong)

Childhood friends (Osananajimi) is kind of a huge trope in manga/anime, often as a romantic interest. According to some sources i quickly consulted in the internet, and some of the manga/anime I've watched, in Japanese culture osananajimi is considered one of the purest bond formed between people, with a level of closeness equal to that between blood relatives; formed at such an early age, at a time when societal restrictions didn't apply yet, the relationship is genuine because they still didn’t need or know how to hide their true feelings from each other. As the childhood friends grew up together, this is considered a special connection, somewhat different to those formed after societal norms and perceptions take precedence. Or, as makeste put it:

here we have two very young children who are introduced to each other at an age when they’re still young enough to have absolutely no secrets. they’re young enough to have not yet learned to be shy or self-conscious, or to downplay their enthusiasm so as not to let others know they care. kids that young don’t hide anything. they don’t lie or deceive. they don’t have agendas, and they assume that others don’t either. it is, in short, a very pure type of relationship in the sense that it’s honest and uncomplicated, that it is exactly what it appears to be at face value. their personalities are fully out there with no attempt at reining anything in. Katsuki witnesses the full force of Izuku’s boundless hero-worshipping energy and enthusiasm. Izuku witnesses the full extent of Katsuki’s relentless confidence and Peter Pan cockiness. both boys see each other for who they are in their entirety, and accept each other. this is a fundamental bond. there is trust built between the two of them at a critical, formative age. it’s a relationship formed so early on that it’s likely that neither of them can actually recall a time before they met the other. they are and have always been a constant in each other’s lives. they’re a lot like siblings in terms of that kind of closeness and complete understanding of the other, both the good and the bad. in fact I’d say that Izuku’s use of “Kacchan” (and Katsuki’s automatic acceptance of it) isn’t that different from a younger brother’s use of “Niisan” for his older brother. it’s very revealing of the type of relationship they have. and that includes the typical sibling squabbles as well. it’s very much a relationship that’s taken for granted; there’s no filter, no effort to hold back, no attempt at trying to tone down their behavior around one another. there is whining and bragging and squabbling and name-calling and tears, just as much as there is cooperation and respect and trust. because at the end of the day, the assumption is that the relationship will endure no matter what, so they can go at each other as hard as they can and it doesn’t matter. the other one’s presence is just a given. that’s the kind of relationship that this term “childhood friends” really encapsulates, I think.

The sudden change of their statuses when the quirks start to manifest is a major factor that placed them on opposite sides of the social hierarchy, and conditioned the way society and their peers would treat them. But despite this and the misunderstandings that happen between them and the falling apart of their relationship, the subconscious understanding between them remains intact through the years. They always flashback to their earlier memories. They probably didn't interact much in elementary or middle school, and even if they did, they interactions were already tainted by their social status and Bakugo’s hostility. They don't share their innermost feelings with anyone but each other. Like when Deku gets angry or determined to win and to surpass him, or when Bakugo screams and cries out his emotional turmoil at Deku. According to Japanese social rules those are selfish things to do. This relates to the concepts of honne and tatemae.

Japanese society is more regimented than one might believe just from watching anime. By middle school age, and even to some degree in primary school, children are expected to interact with their peers in a relatively professional way. This is especially true of relationships between students of opposite sexes. Such requirements aren't held for family or close friends, but for everyone else one is expected to be polite and not share their true feelings or say things too directly. This concept of dividing people into an in-group and an out-group (内外, uchi-soto) is somewhat hard for non-Japanese people to understand, but is central to interactions between people in Japanese culture. In fact, you can find plenty of examples of this and of the related concepts of honne and tatemae in anime if you look, but if you aren't looking for them specifically it's easy to miss. (source)

So, for example, you shouldn't show your true feelings/thoughts to other people, even more if they aren’t socially acceptable, because that may disturb the peace in the community. But because Deku and Kacchan are osananajimi that have known each other their whole life, that doesn't apply to them. By stating from the very beginning that Kacchan was Deku's childhood friend, Hori put them in a close relationship with each other with a level of intimacy, trust and a subconscious understanding not like any other. Kacchan is, in fact, closer to him than All Might himself.

Like, Deku has been calling Bakugo by his childhood nickname, Kacchan ("Ka[tsu]" from Katsuki + "-chan", which is usually used to address children or females in an affectionate way), even past the age he was excepted it to drop it. When they were 4 years old, the other kids called him "Kacchan" too, but growing up it would be seen as childish or disrespectful so they start to call him "Katsuki" or "Bakugo". This puts a level of distance between him and his peers that, regardless of what happened between them, didn't extend to Deku and Katsuki. And it had to cross Deku's mind at some point ( "Should I start calling him Katsuki/Bakugo too?") but he didn't or simply couldn't. Despite everything, he wasn't willing to put even more distance between himself and Bakugo. He deliberately refused to put formal distance between them, and more importantly, Bakugo just LET THAT BE.

Like, this was a great set up from the beginning for me. I knew there was a story there from the first episodes, and then "Deku vs Kacchan 1" happened, showing their childhood flashbacks and the misunderstandings that would persist until DvK2, and i was really into that lol They relationship was one of the main reasons I followed the manga.

Even their color schemes complement each other, and their costumes have the same/similar colors. they are are complementary opposites that share the same core: to become a hero, their admiration of All Might. Each of them has a quality the other lacks and needs to work on to become the heroes: heroes that win and save, as All Might put it. Selflessness and Selfishness: to help and save others, in one side, and to care for one's personal victory, in the other. Bakugo was obsessed with victory and glory, and Deku was willing to do anything to save others, to the point of self-destruction. These isolated qualities didn't made them good heroes, but combined, as the two learn them from each other, by the end of the story they really become two of the greatest heroes.

This connects with their rivalry, which is richer than any other in the manga because of the many layers to their relationship: they are obsessed with each other, want to compete with each other (for the rest of their lives!!!) and don't want the other to fall behind, specially after their misunderstandings are resolved. They also don't want to be left behind by the other. Because they love each other too much! Whether people interpret it as platonic or romantic or whatever in between (secret third they are like like four different types of greek love categories combined), they are each other's More Important Person outside of family members. Hell, Kacchan getting hurt is basically Deku's berserk button: he punches All Might in the face to save Katsuki during the end of term exam; he goes crazy protective and possessive when Katsuki gets kidnapped by the League of villains(Mr. Compress even calls him out lmao)

lol and i feel like i'm leaving many other stuff behind, like Bakugo's apology, and all the little moments after DvK, and all the times in the last arc where Bakugo was thinking about Izuku constantly, and the finale where Katsuki cried because Deku had given up OFA and was going to be quirkless again, and the fact that he was at the heart of the mecha suit years-long project because he wanted Izuku's dream, their dreams, to come true. but tbh I only read them the one time and need to reread the whole manga again to refresh my knowledge. and i already shipped them before all this haha.

they are amazing characters in a really well done shonen manga they have a beautiful story 🧡💚

Dabi wouldn't love; he couldn't love. The world was a terrible and cruel place. The world was never nice to him. He grew up with a father who only loved him for the sole purpose of carrying on his legacy. He wanted to appease his father and carry out the dream that his father had wanted. All he ever wanted was his father's love and approval. He wanted to be the best that his father had said he would be.

You were the kindest person he had ever met. You didn't react much when he wasn't very nice to you. You didn't mind, as you didn't like strangers very much. There was something about him that drew you to him, and him to you. As time went on, he was only slightly nicer to you, but not by much. You continued to treat him the same as you did the day that you first met him. Your opinion and the way you acted never changed.

He was beginning to feel something. He didn't know what it was. He wasn't going to ask anyone. He didn't want anyone to think that he was weak. He could handle himself. Yet, when he saw you interact with another person, he wanted to hurt them. They were a little too close and too friendly for his liking. No one was going to take you from him. Yet, you weren't his. You weren't anything more than a friend. You weren't his to claim. He wanted you to be. He couldn't be with you. How could you love someone like him? He didn't want you to know the horrors that he had gone through. You loved him regardless.

“Y/N, do you want to go on a date?” He asked you suddenly one day. He didn't miss the look in your eyes and the smile on your face.

“Yes.” You said happily. A date was planned.

It was only a few dates before he asked you to be his significant other. He only had the slightest idea of what he was doing. You were still the same loving person he had always known. He was afraid to love, but you made it seem like it was okay. He began to open up about his life, and you accepted him either way. You didn't once judge him for anything that he said. Over time, he began opening up more and more. You still treated him with kindness. He didn't deserve someone like you. You deserve someone better than him. You knew so much about him. At the same time, you knew so little. He didn't dare mention the League of Villains that he was a part of. He didn't want to reveal that part of his life. He couldn't risk you getting hurt. He didn't want someone to take you and use you as leverage against him. He told you about most of his life, and you accepted him no matter what. He wouldn't talk about his criminal life, but he knew if he told you, you would have still accepted him regardless.

2) Oh god you mean the other chapters weren’t the bad ones?!”-Well, from a certain point of view, the title could be referring to Koichi finally cutting loose with his magnum cannon of a fist, or it could be referring to Fires Georg showing in in a futile attempt to steal All Might’s spotlight, or it could be referring to Furuhashi’s brainwave idea to have legit force ghosts appearing in a situation outwith the OFA/AFO mental connection MHA has.

3) “OH JESUS FUCK POP IS TRYING TO WAKE UP BUT FURUHASHI IS TOO STRONG AND IS KEEPING HER DOWN”- She still got up….after a fashion. Just, left most of her fleshy part behind to show up for Koichi’s cheerleading session.

(Vigilantes ch 101) 4) “Also, where’s Midnight? Why isn’t she here? Her quirk could’ve put all of them to sleep, or at least she could try to do so.“- Midnight’s here to serve as the last line of defence between Nomura and Pop, and also as support when she starts flatlining. 7) “Yeah Pop, fight on, since you can only do so when you’re in the fridge apparently.”- And even that amounts to her giving moral support to both a dying Koichi and Nomura as they tether on the brink of passing on. 8) “NO KOICHI DON’T SNAP YOUR FINGERS, YOU DON’T KNOW WHICH HALF OF THE UNIVERSE YOU CAN END UP ERASING”- Judging by your drunken binge following this, I bet you wished it was the half of the universe that conspired to allow this Bizarre ghost plotline to be birthed from Furuhashi’s mind. 9) “Koichi you fool, the power was inside you all along~And here comes the newspaper again, but now you can simply go “no <3” and brush it off”- Koichi legit could have overpowered Nomura’s best punch attempt here with his own arm cannon. Poor guy never really had a chance against the sheer force of the writer’s pen giving strength to Koichi’s blows/as much bullshit power-ups as he required.

10) “KOICHI GODDAMMIT YOU WERE THE ONE THAT SAID THAT YOU COULD USE YOUR QUIRK AROUND YOURSELF LIKE CC

DID YOU FUCKING FORGOT WHAT GHOSTKLEDUSTER TOLD YOU?”- Yeah, but he still doesn’t want to actually fire it. Perhaps one of the biggest hang-ups about liking Koichi’s role as the protagonist is his absolute adherence to never physically assaulting anybody- even here, he just resorts to tearing apart the plasma body to weaken Nomura, rather than strike the obvious weak spot in the head.

11) “PISS OFF KNUCKLES, GO TO THE OTHER SIDE ALREADY GOOD LORD YOU HAVEN’T SHOWED UP FOR AN ETERNITY AND NOW YOU REFUSE TO LEAVE”- And even when he leaves, Furuhashi just drags him right back before the curtain falls.

12) “Debatable, we still aren’t sure he has one”- If he did have one, it swiftly burned apart in his own self-cremation here. Though the lack of change to his usual demeanour when interacting with Koichi one final time indicates he never really put those brain cells to much work even when he had them.

13) “For pete’s sake, first McBee has a tulpa that turns out to be fucking AfO, now Ghost knuckles refuses to fuck off, can someone call in an exorcist already?”- At the rate we were going, I was expecting Koichi to Ghostbusters somebody by the end in some kind of spiritual final battle with Nomura – it’s not like the craziest ideas imaginable wouldn’t have fitting into this off-the-rails situation by the end.

14) “Why do I feel that any moment now Pop’s ghost is gonna show up to tell him that murder is okay in this particular situation”- You tried to joke about it, but Furuhashi was talking all suggestions as good ones the day this chapter came out.

15) “Koichi, with part of “it’s kill or be killed” you didn’t understood? Do you want to end up like knuckles there?”- I mean, he is sorta half-dead at this point – or at least in-tune enough with the spirit world to speak with actual ghosts. That said, at least the continuation of his character arc ended better than Knuckles’ did.

16) “Yes. Because guns are for pussies, real heroes kill with their hands. That’s the logic we want you to follow Koichi. Kicks are also in, as long it’s not below the waist.”- For Evidence, look no further than what All Might did to AFO with his meaty fists of supreme justice. @thelreads

Hello! Would it be alright if I requested something with sally face x a male reader?

Alrighty so since I wasn't quite sure what you wanted, so I did random Headcanons and a small scenario with Sal :)

(The Headcanons don't necessarily match the scenario)

Headcanons

🎭Sal was a little surprised when he found himself attracted to men but he eventually managed to accept himself.

🎭How he knew he liked guys? Well he fell for you.

🎭He was the one who asked you out and he was over the moon when you accepted

🎭Your first date was at an arcade, he picked out all of his coins so you would both have more than enough to spend.

🎭He won you a crocodile plush from a claw machine and he was so pleased with himself since those are hard

🎭You treasured it forever

🎭He was too scared to take his mask off because of his face, let alone to initiate a kiss or a makeout

🎭After a few weeks, he finally took it off and you felt so good that he could trust you

🎭So you had to be the first to kiss him since he thought you would be disgusted

🎭He became a lot more confident in himself after that too

🎭If you're taller/buffer than him it makes him feel protected in public, since he fears being ganged up on because of his mask. Having a bigger guy walking with him in the streets makes him feel secure.

🎭If you're shorter/generally smaller than him then he still feels some type of security since he has someone with him, but he has a much bigger desire to protect you.

🎭He has wants to protect you no matter your size, but sometimes if you're shorter than desire can be a bit bigger

🎭He once bought you a pride flag as a gift, and if you were still closeted then he would get you a tiny pride flag so you could easily hide it if you needed to

Slight smut mentions

🎭Let's say things get a little d i r t y, my man's a switch

🎭His moaning can range from almost silent to really loud, so you gotta be careful if you're in the same building as someone

Scenario

Sal Fisher, who felt guilty after realizing he was attracted to men. He didn't want to disappoint his father by it but he knew he had to accept himself.

He tried his best, but it got harder and harder as everyone started dating people of the opposite gender. When things got even more stressful is when he found himself crushing on you.

The most handsome guy he'd ever seen, also one of his close friends. He was certain you didn't like guys but he took his chances anyway.

Soon he found himself taking a deep breath, before sitting down with you outside.

🎭Let's just say his s/o lost it

🎭"Shut your worthless mouth and go fuck yourself you fucking failed abortion!" His s/o yelled angrily.

🎭Sal just sort of stared, definitely not prepared for that.

🎭"Get out of my face before I fucking murder you."

🎭The person shoved his s/o in the chest, and that was their cue to attack.

🎭The person ended up running away with a bruised eye and a bloody nose...

🎭Let's just say he feels protected whenever your in his presence

🎭Though he'll always drag you away if he sees you're going too far as he doesn't want you to get in trouble.

Katsuki’s Answer: Even if One For All is a cursed power...

Remember those incomprehensible pages of Katsuki’s visual thoughts in chapter 285?

I’ve connected three dots, thanks to chapter 322.

At the beginning of Deku vs. Kacchan, Part 2, Katsuki asks Izuku an earth-shattering question that has shaken him to the core.

And All Might gave him an answer at the end of the fight, but...

There’s a difference between knowing the answer and understanding it.

(manga spoilers below the cut)

All Might answers Katsuki that both Izuku and Katsuki saw something meaningful in All Might that inspired them to be heroes.

They both hold a piece of the puzzle, but they need each other’s pieces to complete the picture.

Save to Win. Win to Save.

This moment is the starting point of their respective developments as they grow into the ultimate heroes. Izuku focuses on acquiring strength, on learning to win so that he can save people. Katsuki focuses on heart, on learning to save people so that he can win.

Katsuki’s journey culminates in chapter 285, where he demonstrates an epiphany about the virtue of self-sacrifice.

I’ve begun collecting the Japanese raw scans and typing out the kanji/kana, romaji, and my own basic literal English translations for a reason: to find language motifs.

There’s something interesting about the end of Katsuki’s apology speech to Izuku in chapter 322.

“As for your path as the successor of One For All, there’s nothing wrong with the ideal All Might represents by itself. And yet now, you’re swaying on your feet. There are walls you can’t overcome with only your ideal of All Might. Whatever you cannot handle, we all will handle. In order to surpass the ideal of All Might, whether it’s you or the refugees at UA or the people of this city, without exception, we will save to win.”

I did what I could for this speech in my meta dissection, but you should note that Katsuki doesn’t literally say “ideal of All Might.” What he’s actually doing is pronouncing the word “ideal” as if it’s the words “All Might.” The kanji 理想 means ideal, but it’s normally pronounced “risou.” However, the furigana above the kanji in Katsuki’s speech bubbles reads as “OORU MAITO” for “All Might” instead.

Given the content of the speech, I think Katsuki is referring back to his question leading into Deku vs. Kacchan, Part 2.

“If the way you admired him was correct, then does that mean my admiration was wrong?”

And his speech about Izuku’s ideals being correct but insufficient refers back to All Might’s answer.

“If either of those feelings is missing, then a hero won’t be able to carry out the justice he wants to carry out.”

Katsuki’s final words in the chapter 322 page refer to “save to win” only, no mention of “win to save.”

Basically, he’s telling Izuku, “You’ve got the Win to Save ideal down, but you need my Save to Win ideal, too.”

This apology, this speech, is a continuation of the revelation Katsuki has in chapter 285 as he saves Izuku from Shigaraki.

So, those three incomprehensible pages?

They are comprehensible now.

“I don’t want to speculate and talk about things I’m not sure of...”

One For All could be cursed. It could be killing Izuku.

“He’s the one who basically created One For All, right? Isn’t it an offshoot of his power? Multiple quirks... It’s the same as him.”

All For One is so powerful because it grants the user access to multiple quirks, potentially an unlimited number. One For All is similar, also being a conglomeration of multiple quirks.

“Even if One For All...is a cursed power...”

As it’s a conglomeration of multiple quirks, One For All is the only power they have that’s on the level of All For One’s power.

Katsuki remembers bullying Izuku in middle school.

Katsuki needs to apologize to Izuku for everything.

“At the same time, it’s...”

Katsuki remembers cheering on All Might as a kid along with Izuku and their other friends. All Might is shown winning and saving.

Saving and Winning. Both are necessary. All Might represents both those ideals.

Both Izuku’s and Katsuki’s admiration were right, just incomplete.

Both are necessary.

Katsuki remembers Izuku’s notebook tossed out the window.

Izuku wrote down his analysis of multiple quirks in that journal. Katsuki swore after Deku vs. Kacchan, Part 2 that if Izuku could write down and absorb strength from those around him, Katsuki could do the same. That is strength derived from others, from multiple quirks, from teamwork.

“I’m not gonna be Deku forever... Kacchan, I’m...”

Katsuki realizes Izuku always thought he was lagging behind. We know now from chapter 322 that Katsuki always felt that Izuku was ahead. Izuku doesn’t know his own value, but Katsuki does.

“I’m the Deku who always does his best!!”

Katsuki watches in revelatory horror as Izuku fights Shigaraki alone.

If Izuku is dying of a curse, a curse he can’t get rid of because they need it to defeat All For One, Katsuki has to save him in order for their side to win. And if Izuku is nearing death, Katsuki has only so long to apologize to him. Katsuki realizes Izuku’s prospects of surviving this fight are low so long as he doesn’t act in accordance with All Might’s advice. Izuku won’t be able to carry out the justice he wants to carry out.

Katsuki wants to fight alongside Izuku, and he proclaims such in chapter 322.

Chapter 285 is the moment Katsuki takes up the complete mantle of Save to Win, all so that Izuku can Win to Save.

It’s the moment Katsuki truly understands that both their ideals of All Might were right.
