Long time reader/lurker, first time writer. Have you seen the article Michael wrote for the mirror published on 15/8/2024? it won’t let me link it here, but it’s titled “Theatre changed my life“ and it’s a wonderful piece - I felt very sad to hear him speak of his father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s, but it always warms my heart to see all the good he’s doing with his charity work. It reminded me of hearing him speak so passionately about his charitable works on the Table Manners podcast
anyway- thanks for all you do in the fandom- I always enjoy your thoughtful and (sometimes racy) posts!
Hi there! Oh, it's so lovely to hear from a longtime reader/lurker. I appreciate you writing in! I did indeed see the article Michael wrote for The Mirror this past week. I'll post the link below, for folks who haven't gotten a chance to see it:
I didn't know that Michael's dad has Alzheimer's, and was so saddened to read about this and to imagine the pain his family must be feeling. One of the things that made me first fall in love with Michael is that he is such a brilliant storyteller, but in particular when he talks about people he really loves. He brings those people so completely to life because he wants you to know who they are. Meyrick has always seemed like such an almost larger-than-life character, and it felt like we knew him, in a way, from Michael's stories--especially the ones about his work as a Jack Nicholson lookalike. So it breaks my heart to know that Michael is having to see the threads of who his father is slowly slipping away.
I agree with you as well that it was lovely to read about Michael talking about his charity work. None of it felt braggadocios in the slightest--rather, it seemed like it was Michael saying, "I've done all these things, but there is still so much more to do, so many more people who need help." It seems like he doesn't even necessarily think of it as "charity work," but as essential efforts to create change. Things that should already be happening, but that for one reason or another aren't.
Michael never seems content, in that way, to rest on his laurels, and that may be why he is always keeping himself busy with film work, charity work, and so on. I love as well that he started Mab Gwalia to fund endeavors that he himself is unable to personally helm, but still supports and champions (ASD Rainbows and A Writing Chance are particularly close to my heart as a writer who also happens to be an autistic woman). I just hope he isn't overextending himself by trying to do too much, especially after spending the first half of this year playing Nye Bevan, which was so physically and mentally demanding on its own.
I also wanted to thank you for the kind words you said at the close of your message. There are times where it's difficult for me to tell what sort of presence I have in the fandom, or if I'm just shouting into the void (though I suppose we all are, in a way). So I am very glad to know that you are enjoying my posts (even if I do tend to overthink everything). My heartfelt gratitude to you for writing in! x

#2693 - Eudonia asterisca
Originally described as Xeroscopa asterica, in 1884, by Edward Meyrick, based on specimens from Arthur's Pass, Mount Hutt, and Lake Wakatipu. In 1913 he moved it to Scoparia. In 1988 John S. Dugdale moved it to Eudonia.
Endemic to the North and South Islands, from sea level up to about 1350m, most often in native podocarp/hardwood forests. Since there are still SOME native trees in the mountains around Queenstown, this individual probably came from there.
Adults are on the wing from December until March, and rarely as early as October and November. They are attracted to light and sugar traps. I couldn't find any information on the foodplant of the caterpillars.

16/11/23 Photos 1-2 - Raise 1, adult specimen

21/11/23 Photos 3-4 - Raise 2, adult specimens frozen for future study
The raising of Epimarptid moths, seemingly the first iNaturalist observations in Australia.
Recently I've become interested in Gelechioidea, whose caterpillars are typically small, unknown, and in desperate need of rearing. Larval behavior varies greatly in this superfamily, with case-bearers in the Hemibela genus to Pyroderces terminella which has been reported feeding on spider eggs (Common & Slater 1990).
However, sometimes a caterpillar can be found feeding on a simple garden weed, as is the case here. These Epimarptid moths (species unidentified) were discovered on the annoying garden weed, Commelina diffusa, in which the caterpillars fed beneath strange silky shelters until the vine's leaves are completely skeletonized.

09/11/23 Photos 5-6 - Caterpillar outside of silk shelter

08/11/23 Photos 7-10 - Silk shelters created by caterpillars
As you can see, the caterpillars are very small (~2mm), along with their silk shelters (~2mm-1cm). The strange tear-drop shaped silk shelters were always positioned in the centre of the leaf, with the shelter growing into a large shapeless mass as the caterpillar develops. Leaf damage was typically seen around the shelter, rather than beneath it, so perhaps the caterpillars stuck their heads out of the shelter to feed.

08/11/23 Photos 11-12 - Cocoons made by caterpillars
Though I attempted to raise the species from its larval stage, in captivity the caterpillars left their silk shelters and refused to feed on the leaves (as seen in photos 5-6). I instead resorted to finding a pupa and bringing it into captivity instead.
The cocoons are tube-shaped structures with surrounding silk and leaf eaten away. The cocoons were positioned on the opposite side of the leaf to the original silk shelter. It took about 8 days for the cocoon in photos 11-12 to hatch.
After the first successful hatching (photos 1-2), I took more cocoons into captivity, and froze the moths which hatched out for future taxonomic study (photos 3-4).

16/11/23 Photos 13-14 - Cocoons collected for collecting and freezing of moths
It is indeed possible for two caterpillars to feed on the same leaf, forming separate silk shelters as seen in photos 7-8. Likewise, the cocoons collected for specimen freezing were found side by side.

03/11/23 Photos 15-16 - Commelina diffusa, hostplant of raise 1 specimens

30/10/23 Photos 17-18 - Commelina sp., hostplant of raise 2 specimens
The Commelina vines in which the caterpillars fed have been reaping havoc in our garden, climbing over other plants and forming dense vine thickets. With the large amount of this vine, there is an equally large amount of these caterpillars, so if the frozen specimens become damaged in some way (unlikely), I can at least collect more.
Will continue to rear caterpillars in the future.
*To be clear, I do not like killing specimens, and only do so when they are of importance or needed for study.

The only things the commander leaves behind are these: A scrap of paper with writing that is not his own, and proudly monogrammed boots, now caked in verdurous filth. Both items will be pored over, and over. The boots, encased and displayed as a memorial to Franklin's expedition, in the time where they were yet named and not merely numbered. And the paper will be picked up and encased in glass to be read but never touched, the ink determined to be not ink at all, the words never fading though grief and greed blinds readers to its warning: WE ARE GONE.

In the summer of 1845 'The Royal Society for Improving Natural and Unnatural Knowledge' at Somerset House in London posted a request for teams of Unnaturalists to uncover the nature of a beast spotted in the Highlands, terrorising the ironworkers on the North shore of Loch Camock. Funded by coal magnate Meyrick Holme, a reward of £500 was offered for proof of its existence, and £1000 was offered for the capture and delivery of the creature to the Royal Society. Two teams of monster hunters at the forefront of British Unnatural interests took up the gauntlet, and the hunt was to become a race against time and each other. But this is not really that story, but rather all the stories that lead up to it, and all the Monsters (Natural or Unnatural) found along the way. alternative title: "What if the Grandpa from Princess Bride was reading 'The Cryptid Factor: 1845' instead (but there was still kissing and melodrama and animals of unusual size hiding out in forests)"

for noooooo reason at all; if you wanted to make a hollow knight-esque moth king character, what would be your top picks of moths to base the character on and why?
I haven't played hollow knight yet, so I did some research. The moth characters' colour scheme is mostly neutral with some pops of colour. There's a lot of emphasis on shape, so my first thought was a plume moth, maybe Pterophorus pentadactyla?

But why stop at a plume moth? What about a many-plumed moth? Like Alucita phricodes?

I also think some sort of metalmark moth would be cool: a lot of metalmark moths are jumping spider mimics and have fake eyes at the ends of their wings. These marks aren't recognizable as eyes irl, but could be exaggerated in the character design.
Also: they have evil eyes!! just look at this devious fella

image credit: Abhijith A.p.c on researchgate
Gracillariidae moths are also very shapey, specifically when their wings are spread out. This unID'd one reminds me of hollow knight a lot, especially the way its legs are held under it.
^it's copyrighted so I linked it
The Golden Clearwing is especially beautiful, and also very eldritch looking which I think suits the purposes of hollow knight.

Warreniplema fumicosta has a Shape.
Lastly, Atkinsonia clerodendronella. Spiky legs!!
^this was the nicest picture I could find but it's copyrighted so I linked it

Finishing up the last of what I have of "The Gospel Of Us" (aka The Passion of Port Talbot). Somehow I missed the part where he trudges through town in GIFs. But here's the remainder.
Above, Michael is put in the local jail and spends the night here. (Day 1 he slept on a grassy hill.. so I suppose at least he is protected from the elements and people here. lol) He did a quick scene with the ghost of Teacher's daughter and that was it for the night. There's a quick moment of him crying at the end that I didn't capture. After this, he's put on fake trial, and then paraded through town, moving from the shopping center to the roundabout near Aberavon Beach, dragging the cross for 7 miles. At the end we reach this moment:
Looking respectfully, I swear. 😗
And then, up he goes! Screaming like a madman for a few minutes as the pain sets in, before Teachers memory is jogged and he recalls beautiful memories of his town. These memories were given to him in advance. The townspeople were asked to write on slips of paper their favorite memories of what they missed about the town.. people who had died, places that were now defunct, everything. He read as many papers as he could in advance and recalled as much as he could when up there. The most important one to him was the name of Michael's childhood friend who had died young.
On "Gospel Of Us" it allowed us to see the same view as he did as he went up. That bobble above his head is a camera. He said it was a concern that he was so vulnerable up there, anyone could've done something to him. Luckily no one did. Note that as he goes up, red rose petals from his thorny crown fall from his body. Getting misted with cold water as a "well of memories spring up out of the ground". He was very cold. Michael said that one of the scenes showed the wedding of his parents, Meyrick and Irene. The only time I could spot people was during this shot, so I think it's the purpley moment played here. The orangey portion is a fire inside a building. I love how the camera flashes illuminate him from the front. Note that his head is up at the beginning of the gif, then it flops downward as he "passes." His silhouette is just *chefs kiss*
