This might be an unpopular opinion but...

gatekeeping hasn't just damaged heavy metal in terms of hurting its popularity and allowing bands with problematic views and histories to flourish when more diversity would benefit the scene. What bothers me just as much is seeing metalheads claim that legendary bands such as Slipknot are not really metal and that everyone needs to check out some band from Norway with like 20 followers on spotify instead. So many bands that were once key figures of the metal scene are nowadays not really seen as being metal. This needs to stop. Because while the lines between metal and hard rock are kinda blurry, so many bands that might get dismissed as hard rock are incredibly important in the history of the genre. AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, all the cringey glam metal bands and doofy Nu-Metal bands are still metal whether you like it or not. They all had a role in helping popularise and develop the genre. Metal isn't just growls and blastbeats it's riffs, solos, chorusses, it's spandex, it's backwards caps and baggy JNCO's. Metal is Doom, Industrial, Glam, Death, and so much more. Heavy Metal is camp, it's ridiculous, it's disturbing, its brutal. Metal is such a wonderfully diverse genre of music and acting like only one or two styles is truly metal is doing the genre a disservice.

But I'd far rather have them introduced in their own stories that actually develop them as a character than shoehorned into a story that's already really full just for the sake of saying "we got the girls in here."

when i first started this blog it was going to be for random shitposts, groupchats once in a while, and mostly tokrev analysis but i was so scared of discourse that i just chose to do the funnier stuff 😭. when tokrev was at it's peak i'd be reading 20k+ words of analysis and it was so fun!! but i felt like i couldn't word what i wanted to say properly so that discouraged me but i wish i'd ignored that because there would have been at least one person who understood what i was saying yk?

I understand most people aren't very conscious of these things but gender is a huge, huge mode through which people connect to each other, especially in youth. (Think wanting to imitate gendered features, or participate in gendered activities together.) Yamato didn't have peers or a real parent to connect with, so it makes perfect sense he would connect with his hero through gender instead. To invalidate that is just insane to me.

What do people who do that think gender is.... no don't tell me, because if someone doesn't respect the language people choose for themselves, (and trust me, there have been and continue to be plenty of real people who describe their own trans experiences as "choosing to be x" whether you like it or not), I am not interested in anything they have to say on the subject. Yamato is a man!

the idea of "irredeemable media" is really funny to me because you would think the people who say things like that would watch exclusively light fluffy kids' shows where nothing goes wrong ever but no, its always the guy who is into Danganronpa or South Park who will look you dead in the eye and tell you you can not watch a tv show or else you are an evil problematic person
