If I had a nickel for every time Mersadie took a photo of half naked Loken in the books, I'd have three nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened thrice.
Girl, honestly, would do the same

If Loken was a horse he would look a lot like his canon astartes counterpart: pale and with grey/blue eyes. Which in horse terms would make him look frightening and like he would eat your fingers. Which would be sad because Loken (horse or nonhorse) would not eat your fingers, and may feel a little bit sad if a remembrancer made a joke about it
dont stress him out like that hes gonna be haunted by this for weeks!!!

Decided to draw character designs for some Horus Heresy girlies. So here they all are!
Design notes below the cut:
Bequa Kynska: I decided to base her whole vibe slightly off Carla Rockmore. The patterns on the sleeve cuffs are inspired by this piece of 13th century Lebanese embroidery.
Cyrene Valantion: Her outfit is inspired by traditional Georgian and Azerbaijanian women’s dress, also some (indirect) inspiration from the works of Michael Nesterov and orthodox saint icons in general.
Lotara Sarrin: Her design didn’t change much because she’s already perfect. But I did make her look a bit like Amrita Sher-Gil’s “Three Girls” painting.
Amar Astarte: Based off the irl statuette of (possibly) the goddess Astarte that was found in the necropolis of Hillah, near Babylon. I also gave her a lab coat because cmon, evil scientist gotta evil science. (Statue pictured below)
Mersadie Oliton: Her clothes and jewellery are based off art from the 17th century Ottoman Empire, specifically from the Rålamb book of costumes.
Tarasha Euten: Clothing and hairstyle are inspired by statues from the Roman Empire, while the accessories are inspired by the Indus River Valley civilisation.
Euphrati Keeler: her clothing is inspired by a mix of fanart I’ve seen of her and this photo of a person from Elmali in traditional clothing (from the 1873 Vienna world fair)
This started off as a fun design thing and ended up with me doing hours of historical clothing research lmao 💀

thinking about tzeentchian garviel and mersadie oliton rn. mersadie probably got kidnapped during a battle or something because garviel’s fixated on her throughout his corruption. she’s his anchor kind of, his remembrancer, his girl, and tzeentch is basically just slapping buttons on the control panel of his mind but he wants to keep her safe and healthy so bad even if it hurts. that’s His Human and yes she’s begging to be let go but she’s *safe*. anyway catch you later if i ever have coherent thoughts about this ship

I just finished reading False Gods, here are my thoughts!
Everything under the cut in case anyone else doesn’t want to spoil some parts :)
- Loken’s eagle tattoo getting cut in training cage (chapter 2)
I really liked this bit. One, it shows that the Astartes also have tattoos (saw that discussed somewhere at some point) and then it sort of shows the separation from the Imperium.
- Horus seeing the XI Primarch in trip with Sejanus(actually Erebus) so now he knows about the missing ones (again)
In Horus Rising, he already mentioned 20 total primarchs (zodiac sign bit- 20 signs for 20 sons) so this contradicts that. Although that’s probably just different authors lol.
- Horus is an astrology dude. Sagittarius stuff with the gold ring and then Mournival having moon phases. Then moon symbols matching to the characters. Then the whole snake lodge thing with the moon shining down.
Dude really likes the moon.
- Page 333 Horus’ armor suddenly switches back to white? (appears white on page 370 again)
I probably missed something saying he had always been wearing white armor. But if switching is the case, then I like it! Sort of paints him as ‘pure and good’ in white while his legion is still stuck in the darker green.
- p. 365 fulgrim has a scale cape
Oooh snake stuff yay. Fashion icon.
- page 369 Lucius is told he’ll be beaten in a duel at some point. Dude responds with ‘not in this lifetime’ :’)
Maybe at this point he’s already got his lovely curse on him. I haven’t read any EC books (yet) but I know his face has the scars all over it at this point. Thought it was cool haha foreshadowing.
Thoughts and feelings time:
I don’t particularly care for Euphrati Keeler anymore. I’m able to see where she is coming from with being traumatized but how she dismissed Karkasy (how he and Mersadie helped her) made me mad on their behalf lol.
Ignace Karkasy died. I really hope my man gets avenged.
Mersadie seems to figure out that his ‘suicide’ was a lie and that he was killed. Sindermann also is told about that by her at some point when the two are dragged away at the end. They tell Loken about it.
Horus’ change in character was apparent to me. That’s just different authors but I’m also putting it to that dude is just tired of all of this shit after Xenobia.
If you read this, you’re awesome :)

Loken.
(Volume 3 VERY LARGE spoilers)
Loken and Mersadie are my blorbos. I literally have them married with a Renesmee Luna Wolf baby in my AU.
I didn't think that their canon story could get any more angsty.
So. Loken, after being too good for this world for far too long, is on the verge of talking sense into Abaddon. At the end of everything, they agree. Horus was controlled by Chaos - which is very much a Do Not Want for Abaddon - and they both miss his former self, their real father. Loken genuinely wants to plead the Legion's case to Dorn and effect a surrender, or at least negotiation. If Abaddon can't agree right then, fine, Loken will quite happily tail him forever, constantly making the same offer. Being his conscience. Being the man beside him. (I see what you did there, Abnett.) Ezekyle says well... I see your point and I'm not going to kill you, nor are my men, but nah to surrender. Are you coming with us though?
And then. And then.
FUCKING EREBUS
Athame in the back. Exactly like Argel Tal. While even Abaddon is reacting like you motherfucker, he explains that he had to close the circle. The symbolism of the betrayal at that exact moment births a greater daemon. The man who walks beside you. The only voice you hear.
FUCKING SAMUS
I have no idea if that twist had been in the planning for 18 years (I suspect not) but it works and it's diabolical.
Loken 'kills' Samus three times. After the second time, we get this from possessed Tormageddon:
And Samus himself said:
Yes you do, Samus.
What about Mersadie's death? When she realises that way back on the Vengeful Spirit, Maloghurst made her into a portal through which they could spy on Loken and unleash a daemon? (Explicitly because they know that "he favours you".) Of course, that daemon is Samus. This is how she sees him:
Literally as a combination of Loken in the setting of where he took his Mournival oath, and a wolf daemon.
Samus' model, for reference:
It's always been a wolf.
To lighten the mood, here is the extract from Vengeful Spirit that has powered much of my fluff:
😭🥺

[fic] The Backup Plan, chapter 1
Title: The Backup Plan Series: Warhammer 30,000/40,000 Pairings: Nathaniel Garro/Eupharti Keeler, Euphrati Keeler/Mersadie Oliton, Nathaniel Garro/Saul Tarvitz (mentioned and in flashbacks), Garviel Loken/Mersadie Oliton (mentioned and in flashbacks) Characters (overall): Nathaniel Garro, Euphrati Keeler, Mersadie Olition, Meric Voyen, Iacton Qruze, the crew of the Eisenstein, Death Guard Ensemble, Saul Tarvitz (mentioned and in flashbacks), Garviel Loken (mentioned and in flashbacks), Mortarion (mentioned and in flashbacks), Horus Lupercal (mentioned and in flashbacks), Original Human Characters Characters: (this chapter) Nathaniel Garro, Meric Voyen, Euphrati Keeler, Mersadie Oliton Word Count: (this chapter) 3641 Story Summary: Supplies are low on the Eisenstein, and not just on food. With some of these supplies, rationing is not possible - it will take a creative solution to survive until they’re found.
Alternatively, an AU of “what if 40k had a/b/o,” taking place during Flight of the Eisenstein, and what life looks like while waiting for a miracle. Chapter Summary: The shortage is discovered, and affected parties have started to be informed. Notes: Originally for the #knotinmyname initiative, that got so much bigger than I ever intended. It’s horribly late, multi-chapter, and very stubborn about having a plot before any smut. All the thanks to the Anon who gave me the prompt that got this story started.
Please heed the tags. This is a story about love and grief and learning how to live again after trauma, somehow with a lot of sex and humor. The fic is rated Explicit, but this chapter is helping establish the plot.
Link to Chapter 1 on Ao3.

During the Siege of Terra Horus Starts Seeing People like Mal And Torgadon as well as Mersadie oliton But What if his wife Is down on Terra in the palace with Dorn or Sanguinius? I feel like Aby would Try to get horus his wife Back to him in hopes it would help with his Madness these are just me yapping but i wanted to see if you had any thoughts about that i have been feeling the horus vibe lately
I think he would! Also the idea of something of Horus' being in the hands of another legion would be unacceptable.
In my sanguinius/reader/horus timeline a possible route to take is that Sanguinius eventually takes reader to safety as the evidence of Horus' decline and heresy are made evident. So her being in the palace would make sense, and Abadonn would be intent to get back the apple of his primarch's eye.

HORUS HERESY #3: GALAXY IN FLAMES
Galaxy In Flames by Ben Counter is the third book in the Horus Heresy series and the conclusion of the first trilogy of The Horus Heresy. With this, we reach the end of the first arc of the Horus Heresy. The story began with Horus Rising and continued with False Gods, and now settles with Galaxy in Flames as the Heresy finally commences. Horus has been corrupted by the powers of Chaos, thanks to the manipulations of Erebus through a ritual to save Horus from a grave injury received in False Gods. After recovering, Horus plans his rebellion against the Emperor, but first, he must purge all forces loyal to the God-Emperor. Therefore, Horus decides to set a trap for those who will not follow him on his crusade. The plan involves gathering four of the Space Marine Legions in the Istvaan system, under the pretext of pacifying an uprising, and thus eliminating those unworthy of the four Legions. And so, the Heresy begins, with Horus' Legion joining forces with the World Eaters, Emperor's Children, and Death Guard, all of whom now owe loyalty to Horus above the Emperor; whom they consider a liar who has abandoned them to fight alone in the Great Crusade. However, within Horus' own Legion, a new cult emerges, the Lectitio Divinitatus, which worships the Emperor as a god and ultimately represents the Imperium's last hope to face this threat.
The story begins with the Moderati Primus, Titus Cassar, recounting that he was there the day Horus betrayed the Emperor. Which is very strange because in the end, Titus Cassar dies, but anyway... He only says this at a meeting of his secret lodge before dispersing when they're discovered.... On the surface of Isstvan III, the forces of the Legions gather by order of Horus and begin their attack against the rebel forces of the planet. The formations are made to separate Horus' allies from those loyal to the Emperor. Therefore, when the battle ends and the revolutionary forces of the planet are defeated, Horus' betrayal begins... The Warmaster receives support from the primarchs Angron, Mortarion, and Fulgrim of the World Eaters, Death Guard, and Emperor's Children in exterminating the forces loyal to the Emperor. Saul Tarvitz of the Emperor's Children realizes the betrayal and manages to warn everyone to hide in bunkers when Horus orders the planet to be bombed with bombs that can destroy and burn everything in their path... Additionally, we have a group of characters formed when Horus attempts to end the burgeoning religion by killing its saint, Euphrati Keeler, who is rescued by Kyril Sindermann, Jonah Aruken, and Titus Cassar... Finally, the group (except for Aruken and Titus Cassar, who have a fight when the bombing occurs which ends with Aruken betraying and killing Cassar), along with Mersadie Oliton and Captain Iacton Qruze, receive help from Tarvitz and manage to board a ship piloted by an ally, Nathaniel Garro of the Death Guard, taking news of Horus' betrayal and what happened on Isstvan to the Emperor on Terra.
The battle on Isstvan III continues between the loyal Marines and the traitors. Horus wants to bombard the world again and settle the matter, but one of the Primarchs, Angron, leads his forces against the loyal forces; forcing Horus to send his own forces to finish the combat in a ground confrontation. Tarvitz, Loken, and Torgaddon organize a fierce resistance and manage to repel the traitor forces, but are betrayed by Lucius of the Emperor's Children. Tarvitz confronts Lucius, who is known as "the greatest swordsman in the entire legion, perhaps even of all legions." Tarvitz cannot defeat Lucius, but he does manage to make him retreat and escape... Meanwhile, Loken and Trogaddon encounter and duel Aximand and Abaddon. Aximand manages to defeat Trogaddon and decapitate him, but this generates some conflict within him... The traitors manage to overcome Loken, but when they are about to kill him, the ship Dies Irae arrives and collapses the building where they were. Aximand and Abaddon are alive and trapped under the rubble and leave believing Loken is dead... Loken is still alive and watches as Horus launches another definitive bombardment to ensure that no one survives... Tarvitz and the remaining Space Marines from the Legions also watch the bombardment and they have nothing left but to rejoice for the battle they gave before dying...
With the resistance destroyed, Horus withdraws his troops and plans his next move. They now face seven legions coming to destroy them, so the Warmaster plans another ambush, this time on Isstvan V. Aximand, still in conflict after killing Trogaddon and his other brothers, asks what they will do after Isstvan V. To which Horus assures that once they destroy the Emperor's legions on Isstvan V, they will attack Terra.

Callback time!
Laer(an): The planet Fulgrim fought the snake people and found the Demon Sword. And Fabius got his inspiration for some new toys for the III.
Charo and Ae: just some worlds without other info
Carnival of Light on Sarosh: a "festival" held by the people of Sarosh. They either kidnapped or brainwashed baseline people attached to the first legion to cause chaos and Chaos on the fleet. Also they tried to nuke the Lion and the First Legion was split after Sarosh because Luther found the nuke but didn't say anything at first.
Murder: The name that stuck for the world with the Mega-Arachnids. Involved three legions - Blood Angels, Emperor's Children and Lunat Wolves in order of deployment. Chronologically, it was the last time Sanguinius and Horus fought a campaign alongside each other and was roughly around the time of the Laeran campaign (I think). The whole Interex thing happened shortly after, with Erebus nicking the Anathame and causing the war against them.
Hexen Guild: ? No idea, Lexicanum has nothing on them. Maybe sorcerors, considering "Hexen" means "Witches"
Leland Roget and Jeacon Poul: Some artists without more info
(Ostian) Delafour: The poor sap was a remebrancer with the III Legion. He unwittingly saved his mind from Slaaneshi corruption by rebuffing the advances of a senior remembrancer (and involuntary slaaneshi poster girl) so he wasn't allowed down to laer. Didn't help him in the end, because after he finished his statue of the Emperor (and doing a spectacular job of staying out of the loop) Fulgrim impaled him with the Anathame upon it shortly before the Dropsite Massacre.
Ignace Karkasy: Slightly washed up remembrancer and poet from the 63rd expedition, attached to the Luna Wolves. He became a protegee of Garviel Loken, Captain of the 10th Company and member of the Mournival, after an alcohol-induced rambling of opinions that baseline soldiers did not appreciate. He was friends/acquaintances with Mersadie Oliton, Euphrati Keeler and Iterator Kyril Sidnermann. After the Mournival carried a wounded Horus back from Davin and injured/killed several civilians while doing so, he spoke out against the Astartes and was ultimately murdered by Horus' enforcer/assassin/crony Maggard. His murder was disguised as a suicide but his friends eventually figured out that it was very much not.
As of my current position in Mechanicum, it is some time after the Isstvan III massacre but before the wider news of Horus' betrayal has reached Mars at least. As in, some higher ups have been talking about some shit going down with a lot of Astarte casualties in the Isstvan system but not that Horus decided to go traitor. Some of the higher Mechanicum people know that Horus is a traitor because they joined him, like the Fabricator General Kelbor-Hal.
