THE BYEEE! Collection - by Studio Bad Egg
KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES OCTOBER 5TH
Super proud to announce that I'm the writer of this campaign, its narrative and product descriptions. This landmark Kickstarter combines the worlds of Gravity Falls, Amphibia and The Owl House into a cataclysmic meeting of unlikely families, taking on a singular evil.
Beyond being full of Alex, Dana and Matt-approved concepts and artwork, this campaign will include...
Drumroll.
An 8" tall Stanford Pines figure, on an infinity-mirror base - complete with multidimensional palismans and a Sprig on his back. I want you to take a quick look at your ruler. 8" is one big figurine!
I'm pleased to say I've consulted on a LOT of designs for this campaign, too, and it's shaping up to be incredible. The Stan figure is even more unwieldy in his awesomeness, but we're not quite ready to show him yet.
Other planned merchandise includes:
An 8" tall Stan Pines figurine that's ready to kick ass. And might be slightly manipulated to impress his ex-wife.
A set of four pins that assemble into a tetrahedron - complete with every series' creator commemorated in its base.
A 6" tall figure of each of the Calamity Trio!
A 6" tall Hooty figure!
And much more!
Studio Bad Egg have been a pleasure to work with, and the narrative is shaping up to being super funny, showcasing unfettered love and affection for the silly little cartoons we know and love so well.
You don't want to miss out on this. Trust me.

Finished this just in time for the new trailer drop! This is my Mononoke illustration featuring assorted merch from the anime, movie, and stage play! How many can you recognize? ⚖️👹
(Yes, please send answers in the replies! Answers, progress pics, artist commentary will be drafted on a separate post when I'm less tired) ⭐️ UPDATE 04/03/24: Abridged artist commentary is now available under the cut! For the full version, please see the Google Doc linked in the replies.
👁️Overview
Late last year, I rather belatedly discovered Mononoke’s 15th anniversary came and went, and with it, an entire swath of new content to manically pore over. This is an illustration of the various Mononoke merchandise, props, and set dressing I discovered.
---
🔎Scope
Some fun facts regarding the work that went into this illustration!
Not including research time, this project ran for roughly two months, consuming much of my waking hours outside of my full time and freelance jobs.
While the illustration does not depict all of my findings, it does feature over 120 unique props and set dressings!
The majority of the props and set dressing were modeled to varying degrees of detail in SketchUp.
To model prep, I often put together schematics on Photoshop or Illustrators. Some were created from scratch. Others were created with the liberal usage of the Photoshop transform and perspective warp function.
The master file is 1.5GB. The dimensions are 6400x3600 at 300 dpi, and contains over 2,200 layers.
Near the end of production, the master file became so unwieldy I created a separate working file. This way, I could create assets lag-free then import the layers into the master file.
---
Past this point is where most of the commentary cuts were made for the sake of brevity. Again, look in the replies for the Google Doc link containing the full version with a table of contents for easier navigation!
---
🗳️3D Layout
As you can see, the backbone of this illustration is the 3D model. I spent perhaps 30-40% of my production time on this stage.
And this is the lit version. The lighting ultimately got downplayed in favor of showcasing the vibrant colors. I like how simple it looks though!
---
🎬Production-Based Set Dressing
In addition to merchandise, I wanted to insert set dressing and props from the various Mononoke productions.
🦊Kusuriuri
It’s odd to have a section dedicated just to him, but his unique appearance warrants it. His garb and overall appearance is an amalgam of the anime and movie. The original intent was ambiguity– kind of like the blue/black vs. yellow/white dress phenomena a few years back. But after doing the color flats, I rather liked how the rich, unaltered colored fit with the overall composition so it became more blatant. I’m surprised that nobody has commented on this since I published the illustration. Maybe because I didn’t feature him in a close-up?
🐈 kai ~Ayakashi~Bake Neko (2006)
Finding props iconic to this story arc (outside of the Kusuriuri’s tools of trade, of course) was somewhat difficult. While the environment was richly decorated, it mainly consisted of 2D artwork which I wasn’t keen on retracing. I opted to paint objects that characters interacted with or featured heavily in the show.
Salt Jar
Candlestick
Rat Trap
🦋Mononoke (2007)
The props fall into three distinct categories here: Kusuriuri’s tools and trinkets; things featured in the opening and ending credits; and objects iconic to each of the five story arcs in the series. I tried to keep most of them clustered on the tatami, but as space grew scarce some props trickled up onto the deck as well.
Medicine Box
Exorcism Sword
Tenbin
Paper Talisman
Mirror
Ring
Geta Sandal
Necklace
Paper Umbrella (Zashikiwarashi)
Daruma Dolls ( Zashikiwarashi)
Gunpowder Ball (Umi Bozu)
Smoking Pipe (Nopperabou)
Genjiko Blocks (Nue)
Train Ticket (Bake Neko)
Lantern (Anime OP)
Butterflies (Anime EP)
☂️Mononoke: Karakasa (2024)
Pretty slim pickings for the new movie since I only had the teaser, first trailer, and movie poster to reference from. Kusuriuri’s tools of trade were a given, but finding memorable and narratively significant objects was a tad troublesome.
Thankfully, the set dressing ended up (however subconsciously) strikingly similar to the movie’s environment design, down to the green tatami and multicolor shoji screen. I suppose at this point I was so immersed in Mononoke content that its aesthetics subconsciously informed my design choices!
Exorcism Sword
Tenbin
Paper Talisman
Comb
Movie Poster
Butterfly (Custom design)

Let's talk about Jump GIGA
Jump GIGA covers, 2016-2024. Volumes are published (left to right per row) as Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn releases, with 2018 and 2019 briefly breaking the pattern by having three Winter and three Summer volumes each. 2023 has an Early Spring volume in addition to the standard four.
So, people have pointed out that the 2024 Spring cover is, uh, not like other covers.
But I've only seen comparisons to other MHA GIGA covers and MHA Weekly Shonen Jump covers. Out of curiosity for what GIGA's typical marketing aesthetics might be, I put together a comparison between all of Jump GIGA's covers to date.
And, um. Some things stand out, to say the least.
First, let me clarify what Jump GIGA even is: it is a seasonal magazine from Shonen Jump, published separate from Weekly Shonen Jump. SJ is an absolutely massive brand and they have a number of magazines serialized outside of the most well-known weekly magazine.
The content of Jump GIGA is primarily made up of one-shots and spin-offs. From the beginning, a lot of the appeal has been the cool cover illustrations which showcase special merchandise that comes with the purchase of GIGA. Usually the cover also promotes big things going on related to the WSJ series, like movie events, new games, or special figurines for sale.
The marketing aesthetic has been clear from the start: the cover consists of one core illustration and a number of ads surrounding it. Most often you get a cover illustration of a protagonist, and then ads and merch for other series, e.g. Food Wars protagonist cover with One Piece film promotion and Haikyuu!! merch.
The purpose of this marketing direction is pretty obvious. Spin-offs and one-shots are not likely to generate a ton of interest consistently, so they lure people in with the cool covers and tempting limited edition merchandise of the series they already know and love. In this way, highlighting one series with the cover and different series with the merch makes sense, because maybe somebody doesn't care about Food Wars, but they definitely want those Haikyuu!! stickers, stuff like that.
Starting from 2020's Autumn volume, you can see a shift. For the first time, basically all of the merchandise is for the cover series. The Demon Slayer manga had already ended five months earlier in May, but a two-chapter spin-off was scheduled for release in WSJ during October. This GIGA was released exactly one day before the second chapter was published and it capitalizes on the hype.
After this point, only MHA and Jujutsu Kaisen dominate the cover and the merch in quite this way, with Black Clover getting attention last volume as a way to highlight the fact that it actually switched syndication from WSJ to GIGA.
Anyway, most commonly the cover illustration is a solo shot of a core cast member (usually but not always the protagonist), and if it's not a solo, it's a big cast illustration.
Only a few covers focus on two characters, and usually it's a crossover as opposed to characters from same series sharing the limelight.
Here we've got Food Wars' protagonist with the main characters from Dr. Stone and Act-Age.
The two covers most similar to the Izuku & Kacchan cover are 2022 Winter and 2023 Autumn.
Winter depicts the main trio of Blue Box in a seasonally-appropriate aesthetic. Not gonna lie, this one kinda makes me laugh--Blue Box is a romance and sports manga, and even though Christmas has a romantic air to it in Japan, instead of depicting any sort of like, hesitant but hopeful romantic energy between the heterosexual couple that actually get together later in the series, they focus primarily on the two girls being cute with the guy is a wee footnote? I mean, all right.
Meanwhile, Autumn depicts one of the protagonists with the series antagonist with a typical cool action style. I'm not very familiar with JJK, but I hear these two have got Some Drama going on, so, there's that.
The merch itself has also evolved over the years. Stickers and posters were present early on, but they have since expanded to decorative folders and now acrylic stands and coasters. 2021 Summer sees the first time the cover illustration is marketed as merch, with the Jujutsu Kaisen cover included as a decorative folder.
Right after that, the Kacchan cover of 2021 Autumn is included as a poster alongside earlier covers featuring Todoroki and Izuku.
2023 Summer's cover is a huge, wrap-around MHA cast illustration and it was published three days after chapter 396 came out, strategically timed to highlight the big shift in the final battle as Ochako vs Toga ends and All Might vs. AFO begins. Merch includes a decorative folder of the wrap-around cover and character motif stickers.
And then we get this!?
A duo cover illustration where the cover art itself has been merchandised to hell and back!?!?
Acrylic stand and pin set!?
Double-sided coaster showing bkdk greatest hits!? With volume 29's river scene cover!?
There's also a double-sided poster featuring the Spring cover with the ninth popularity poll art and a decorative bag with the anniversary art. The cover art itself is plastered all over the volume, front, back, and spine, apparently a total of 19 times.
I honestly don't know what to say about this. It feels wild that this is actually what the cover is. Obviously it is a huge marketing push in anticipation of season 7, and Izuku and Katsuki are the most popular characters, but. it just feels... unique.
In the course of Jump GIGA's publication, this direction is kind of unprecedented. Genuinely no one could have expected this. This seems to be the first time there's been this much merch for a cover. And it was a solid fucking move, marketing-wise--it's sold out basically everywhere, everyone is talking about it. And even people who don't follow the series or ship these two can't help but comment on how strikingly romantic it looks!?
I don't know how much say Horikoshi had in what the cover was, but damn it sure feels like he drew this with immense affection. I kind of wonder if he personally pushed for it to be these two, rather than the typical solo shot, cast shot, or even a protagonist vs. antagonist shot.
I'm KO'd, man. idek if this post is useful to anybody I'm just on my hands and knees here.
Everybody knows what we're all here for, and it's these cute boys finally getting their happy ending.
EDIT NOTE: I gathered much of the information and many, many of the images in this post from a fan-made Jump Database. I neglected to say it properly when I first posted this, but special thanks to the very dedicated people who maintain that website!
#bkdk#i'm losing it#idek how to go on#they're so beautiful#I was trying to be all thoughtful and intellectual about what kind of marketing game GIGA plays in SJ's arsenal of branding#but#this is just such a divergence from their typical approach#why are there basically no other duo covers#did the other mangaka just not particularly push for it#did other duos just not serve as attention-grabbing enough#there's nothing else like it#what am I supposed to do with this knowledge

Best Uncle Competition
Part of the "Meet & Greet... and more?" Universe Pairing: Lando Norris x Noah (plus Oscar, Carlos and the two Max's) Words: 1434 Request: Yes by the lovely @littlegrapejuice : I'd love a one shot where lando takes noah karting with other drivers (of your choice) and they all compete to be the best uncle (like letting him win or bribing him with merch). But in the end, noah just cares about his dad lando being the best and the other drivers are just disappointed that no matter how much they show off, they don't/can't compare. Just smth fluffy to show lando and noah's bond bc i just love them sm 🫶 Masterlist
Please do not repost, thank you, and leave some feedback :)
The karting track was buzzing with excitement. Lando was thrilled to spend the day with his seven-year-old son, Noah, and had planned a special outing. To make it even more memorable he had invited some of his closest friends: Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz, Max Fewtrell and Max Verstappen. Little did Noah and Lando know, this wasn't just a friendly karting session - it was a competition to win the title of “Best Uncle”.
Noah’s eyes lit up at the sight of all his favorite drivers, each in their racing gear and ready for action. He bounced with excitement when he saw his dad and the racing stars.
“Dad, this is amazing,” Noah exclaimed, his eyes wide with joy.
“I’m glad you’re excited, buddy,” Lando said, grinning. “Let’s see how everyone does today.”
While they were getting ready Noah’s attention was almost entirely fixed on his dad. To the seven-year-old Lando wasn’t just another racer in the line-up - he was a superhero, an idol and his personal racing champion all rolled into one.
From the moment they arrived Noah’s eyes sparkled every time he looked at Lando. He tried to hide his excitement by pretending to be cool but his wide grin betrayed his bubbling enthusiasm. When Lando adjusted his kart Noah mimicked him with exaggerated seriousness, pretending to check imaginary tire pressure, just like his dad.
Oscar, known for his laid-back demeanor, was the first to make his move. He handed Noah a small bag of McLaren merchandise - a shirt, stickers and an orange cap with the team’s logo. “Hey, Noah, how about you wear this today? It’ll make you look like a real racer,” Oscar said with a smile, his own cap slightly askew.
Noah was thrilled and put on the cap immediately. “Wow, thanks, Oscar,” he said, adjusting the cap with a serious look, as if preparing for a big race. He wore it with an added sense of pride, as if it somehow made him part of the racing team Lando was part of.
Carlos, always competitive but with a warm heart, decided to take a different approach. He gifted him a brand new remote controlled race car. “Here you go, champ. This is the newest model out there. I saw it in the store and immediately had to get it for you.”
Noah beamed, feeling happy with his new toy. “Thanks, Carlos!” he said, admiring the car and already got excited about testing it out later at home. When Carlos showed off his own karting skills, Noah watched but his attention often drifted away from the other drivers to watch Lando, who was adjusting his kart and chatting with the other drivers.
Max Fewtrell, the strategist, took a calculated approach. He decided to let Noah win a few races to boost his confidence. During the first race, Max took a leisurely pace, letting Noah zoom ahead while giving him enthusiastic cheers. “Just remember to keep your eyes on the track and not on me. You’ve got this,” Max cheered, pretending to struggle with his kart’s steering.
The boy, thrilled by his apparent racing powers, waved back at Max as he zipped past. However, his gaze frequently flicked towards his dad, who was cheering the loudest from the sidelines, making Noah feel like a true star.
Max Verstappen, known for his fiery competitive spirit, had a similar but different strategy. He challenged Noah to a friendly race but rather than showcasing his superior skills he took it easy. Max’s plan was to make it look like Noah had a real chance at beating him, making Noah’s victories feel genuine.
“Ready to race, champ?” Max asked with a mischievous grin. He then pretended to have trouble with his kart, driving so slowly that even a snail might have beaten him.
Noah, realizing he had the chance to beat him, shot across the finish line with a triumphant cheer. “I beat Max Verstappen!” he exclaimed, practically glowing with pride. Throughout the race his eyes kept darting towards his dad, whose proud expression seemed to be the ultimate reward for Noah.
As the day progressed, each driver tried to outdo the other in their quest for the Best Uncle title. Oscar gave Noah some candy and chocolate he had brought, Max Fewtrell brought out a bag of energy drinks (non-caffeinated, of course) and Carlos shared some top-secret racing tricks.
The drivers were so engrossed in their mission to win Noah’s favor that they started devising ever more elaborate schemes. Oscar organized a surprise mini-trophy ceremony where Noah was awarded a medal for “Most Improved Racer.” Carlos attempted to perform a dramatic, slow-motion race finish complete with exaggerated victory poses trying to make the boy laugh while Max Verstappen started a playful trash-talking session, jokingly challenging Noah to a rematch in the next race.
Despite all their efforts Noah remained blissfully unaware of the competition happening among the drivers. He was having the time of his life and each driver’s attempts to impress him were met with genuine excitement and delight. However, Noah’s focus was always on his dad. Every time Lando spoke Noah’s eyes lit up, his attention shifting entirely to him, even as the other drivers attempted to engage him in conversations or give him more cool stuff.
At the end of the day the drivers gathered around Noah for a final group photo, each one trying to position themselves close to Noah, hoping to be remembered as the “Best Uncle”.
Lando, ever the proud father, stood beside his son with a beaming smile.
“Alright, everyone,” Lando announced, “let’s get a great shot to wrap up the day!”
Noah, now comfortably surrounded by his racing heroes, looked up with wide eyes, completely engrossed in the moment. The drivers lined up, each trying to position themselves strategically to be as close to Noah as possible. Oscar casually draped an arm around Noah’s shoulders, while Carlos tried to subtly nudge closer, his arm around Noah’s waist.
Max Fewtrell carefully maneuvered himself to ensure he was directly behind Noah, hoping to be prominently visible in the photo. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, with his competitive edge, found himself in a playful tug-of-war with Oscar over who would stand on Noah’s left side.
As they all posed, Max Verstappen couldn’t resist one last playful gesture. He gave Noah a thumbs-up while leaning in close, trying to make the gesture look as enthusiastic as possible. “Give us your biggest smile, champ,” he said, adding a wink for good measure.
Noah, however, seemed largely unfazed by the antics. His gaze was firmly fixed on his dad who was standing proudly beside him. The little boy’s attention was entirely devoted to Lando, his dad’s beaming smile and affectionate presence overshadowing all the playful efforts of the drivers.
The karting track employee, who had the job of taking the photo, prompted everyone to “Say cheese!”. The moment the photo was taken Noah’s smile was the brightest it had been all day but his focus remained on Lando who had wrapped a comforting arm around his shoulders. The picture captured a perfect moment: Noah in his tiny racing gear, surrounded by some of the best drivers in the world, yet his eyes were solely on his father.
After the photo was taken Max Fewtrell was the one who crouched down to Noah, asking the question everyone was so eager to get the answer to.
“Well, Noah,” Max said, playfully nudging the cap on the boy’s head, “do you have a favorite uncle? Who is the best?”
Noah thought for a moment, looking around at the smiling faces of his racing heroes. He then turned to his dad with a wide smile and said, “Dad, you’re the best!”
The drivers laughed, though there was a hint of good-natured disappointment. Despite their best efforts and playful strategies it was clear that no matter how much fun they had or how many tricks they pulled, Noah’s heart belonged to his dad. They had aimed to win the title of “Best Uncle”, but in the end it all was overshadowed by Lando’s presence and Noah’s love for his dad that made the boy the happiest.
As they packed up both Max’s, Oscar and Carlos exchanged friendly banter about who might get another chance to be the “Best Uncle”. The karting day had been a fun adventure but the true victory lay in the joy and love shared between a father and his son. The group photo, with Noah’s adoring gaze fixed on his dad, would forever be a treasured memory of a day full of fun and laughter - and banter.
