I was just discussing about mercedes’ future and their priorities/decisions and it’s so fucking painful realizing that toto actually just doesn’t care about George?

If toto was going to support George in winning a WDC (like george is definitely CAPABLE of winning with the right car and support) toto wouldn’t have gotten a literal child rookie on the grid. Probably would’ve gotten someone with more experience within F1 itself if he even thought about the possibility of supporting George as a championship winning driver.

It irks me so much cuz George has so much potential and worked so hard to get here and he’ll most likely forever be Number 2 and a support driver in Toto’s mind.

Cuz les be real Toto is either: a) delulu and still has his hopes up for Max potentially leaving RB and joining merc or b) looking into a distant future where he’s trying to shape kimi up as the next wdc (with alllll the hype surrounding kimi from everyone saying he’s similar to a young lewis etcetc).

Makes me so fucking sad that the existing talented hardworking drivers are being overlooked just cuz the team principals think they’ll somehow strike gold with a new generation max verstappen.

This isn’t hating on Kimi jr. btw all power to him, i’m happy for the kid and i’ll support him. But even if i weren’t a George fan (which i am cuz the world hates me and wants us both to suffer) i’d still feel bad for George lol. Toto’s such a pos man. Fuck that guy. Feel free to disagree with me this is all just my opinion (as a very green f1 fan like i’m still super new to the sport so my understanding is surface level and more intuitive than analytical).

Sometimes I think about how at the Ferrari movie premiere, Christian Horner said ‘I am sure they wanna keep hold of him and they’d be crazy if they didn’t’ when asked about charles renewal contract, almost with this threatening look like he is ready to pounce the moment Ferrari fuck up again; and Toto playing clueless like ‘Oh I don’t know anything about a contract but why wouldn’t Ferrari sign him’ because I am pretty sure both of them approached Charles this year 👀 and the funny part being no one was asking them about Carlos lmao

they both approached him at the beginning of the year, charles declined mercedes immediately. then i believe helmut leaked the unsuccessful attempt to get charles around may.

then charles started again flirting with ferrari after the padel date event, which was after qatar, and was seen being friendly with christian horner, other RB employees, and max during the triple header. back in vegas, he hung out more with max than his own teammate. that's when i believe there were negotiations taking place, i still believe @tsarinablogs's theory that charles did, in fact, sign a pre-contract with red bull following the singapore/cota/brazil shit show, and actually showed ferrari he was aiming to act on it - i believe even the questions about their rivarly with max during press conferences were plugged in by red bull to further spread their lestappen teammate duo agenda.

it switched around abu dhabi, when fred made the statements about charles being the leader they need, and his subtle carlos shade (after he almost cost them the cost cap breach).

charles, however, definitely gained more individual autonomy out of that pressure he put on ferrari and also is now able to do many things that his previous ferrari contract did not allow him (more personal PR than the ferrari one, wearing his clothing brand, hanging out with people that aren't exactly tifosi approved like max in the paddock).

so yeah, i believe charles truly played his cards REALLY well and managed to get that contract he wanted. i believe christian's obsession with charles still makes him believe that if ferrari failed, he could snatch him, which probably would be possible with the exit iron clauses.

also charles nor ferrari not dislosing the length of the contract definitely is a bit sus, so there's that

my bahrain 2024 grand prix recap:

if it were anybody but max in p1 and they had the same exact race with the same exact lead on p2, they would’ve been driver of the day. did i still vote for carlos, yes.

a ferrari p3 and p4 is a win—i don’t care what people say 😤 we have to celebrate this as a win because it may never happen again this season. that being said,,, if i hear “we are checking” more than two times in a race, i am cutting somebodies head off at ferrari, and until an improved result is shown more heads will roll :)

i completely agree with you about esteban, despite being alpine's first winner and literally being born and raised in normandy, never actually being embraced by the higher ups and have actually felt that way for a long time. here's how i see things:

cyril - dickmatized by daniel

otmar - accepts bribes and hates the working classs (jk jk...unless? but also this)

rossi - whatever the fuck this was about

bruno - ...do i even have to say anything?

...and is it really a coincidence that marcin, the only team principal/ceo i didn't mention above, was leading when alpine was at their peak? i think not!

Yeah it's a bizzare state of affairs over there... it probably doesn't help that the team is already run in a weirdass way (controlled by ceo board & work being split between 2 countries) before even getting into whoever the team principal of the day is.

I've always assumed the team's higher up dislike of Ocon came from the fact they're not even in charge of their own driver because Mercedes manage him. He's in a very unique situation where he's being managed by a team that has absolutely no connection to the team he races for and is in fact one of their competitors. Like when George was at Williams or if Bearman goes to Haas you can point at them and explain that yes they are part of other teams' junior programmes but they are racing for a team that uses their junior team as an engine supplier so they have that existing relationship to be sharing drivers.

Alpine on the other hand are a works team and make their own admittedly godawful engine so it's a bit strange for them to sort of be beholden to Mercedes in this way by virtue of them telling Ocon where to go. Compare his situation to Alonso who wasn't tied down to any other teams by contract or to Piastri who was Alpine's own junior driver or Gasly who Alpine spent a lot of money on buying his contract out from Red Bull so he wouldn't have any connection to them anymore and you can see why Ocon would be a less favourable option than all 3 of them management wise.

As for TPs well Cyril sort of pretended Ocon didn't exist at all which arguably is better than whatever is happening now. Otmar was too busy trying to show the media that they treat both drivers equally (him on Sky Sports F1 broadcast in Monaco last year was so funny... they asked him about Ocon's podium and he just started talking about Pierre). I've never been able to pin Otmar's thoughts on Ocon down actually despite the fact they worked together for 2 years in Force India as well. What I will say is he was a relatively calm team principal who wouldn't have reacted the way Famin did on live TV in Monaco this year. Rossi wasn't the team principal but he was the CEO which is why he was happy to slander the team to the press because like all upper management he has no idea how the job actually gets done. That being said I think admittedly he did like Esteban which might explain - with him gone - why the team have suddenly decided Ocon's their number one enemy now.

Marcin of course led Alpine's only good season and was kicked in favour of Otmar for some nonsensical reason. Jokes on Alpine because that 2021 season was and is the best they're ever gonna achieve.

Famin I actually liked at the end of last year believe it or not lmao. Not sure what happened to him over the winter break but he seems to have woken up one day and decided Ocon is the root of all evil at Alpine despite the fact both of the drivers there are the only positive thing the team has going for them atm.

Hot take on 3H inter-faction scouting wrt how "plausible" it is for in-universe politics:

I think it can happen, but they need to be very politically savvy to pull it off and benefit from it + either the circumstances need to be dire enough that it's basically the best slash only realistic option left, and/or there needs to be a lot of personal material benefits to joining the other side. And I mean a lot.

By which I also mean: I think "doing what's right/because they personally like and trust the Professor (as in, for reasons other than knowing they're strong enough to win the war)" that the game tries to tell you is actually a very weak reason.

For one, keep in mind that most of the playable cast in 3H are feudal nobles. Some aren't in the best circumstances by noble standards (ex: Ingrid, Lysithea) but they're still nobles, they hold power and wealth and would generally be way better off than like 99% of the people in the lands they rule. Under some circumstances they might have to bow their heads to someone else (ex: the crown, and for Alliance nobles, stronger neighbors), but for the most part, while they're in their own territories/manors, they call the shots. And that's a pretty strong power trip.

To put it bluntly, even if Place A overall sucks compared to Place B, many would prefer being able to call shots in Place A rather than living by someone else's rules in Place B. Especially people raised since birth to call the shots, so, you know, nobles. Throwing all that away to fight for another country (and possibly being branded a traitor/sellout aka losing legitimacy) without guarantees of good material/political compensation, just because "it's the right thing/I like someone on the other side" is... pretty unlikely imo

If they do switch sides, it's more likely that it's a "oh shit our side is probably gonna lose, let's just switch sides now and lay flat so we take less damage" situation and/or there are some unpleasant negotiations involved, like the other side going "haha yeah if/once we win you can take over the lands of your neighbors who didn't switch sides, if the commoners disapprove and try to rebel we'll give you troops to flatten them."

You also need to take into account what might happen if you switch sides, and the side you switched to loses/you get defeated by the guys you betrayed. Because that is definitely not going to end well, unless, again, the switcher is really fucking savvy with politics.

And most of this post talks about nobles, but I think the commoners would also realistically want something a bit more than "it's the right thing/for an individual," such as money, security/safety of family, career prospects, etc for switching sides too.

Like, remember that most of the commoner students are literally at Garreg Mach for the explicit purposes of climbing the socioeconomic ladder. Would you risk your life fighting on behalf of a different country you don't have family or connections in (or in case of Mercedes, possibly a country you already fled once for safety reasons) if they weren't at least giving you fat stacks of cash in exchange lmao

Tl;dr I think the reasons for/circumstances behind characters switching sides would have to be way more cynical than what the game tries to tell you if it were to make sense politically.

There's a 33 on the side of the ring to Lewis' finger, and Charles can't stop looking at it. He hasn't mustered the courage to ask him about it, yet.

He reasons himself. 33 is just a number. Sure, it's Max's number, but why would Lewis even wear a ring with it in the first place?

It probably stands for something else, he just doesn't know what.

A few days go by, and Charles doesn't ask. He's a little distant with his boyfriend, but Lewis doesn't really notice it. The race weekend is keeping them busy, and he's also interacting with Max more than usual.

It gets too much.

Lewis is chatting with Max in front of the Mercedes garage when Charles snaps. He marches to them, snarls some insults to Max, and drags Lewis away.

"Charles, what the fuck?" Lewis protests, but Charles doesn't let him go until they are behind the Mercedes hospitality.

"I should be the one to ask that!" he shouts, crossing his arms against his chest. "What the fuck is that ring?"

"Ring? Which ring?" Lewis frowns, looking down at his hands.

"This one, with a 33 on it," he growls, pointing at the offensive item.

Lewis looks up, then down, then up again. Then, he starts laughing.

"Don't fucking laugh!" Charles roars, angry, and Lewis takes him by the arm before he can leave.

"Sorry, I'm sorry, baby," he chuckled, calming down. "I'm sorry, it's just... Did you think- seriously, did you think there was something going on between me and Max? Because of this ring?"

"When you say it like that, it's stupid," Charles pouts. But why do you have that thing?"

"It's present from my dad," Lewis smiled. "For my 33th birthday. I had lost it in my appartment, but I found it again when we moved in together, so I started wearing it again."

"I really am stupid," Charles huffs.

"Nah, that was cute, actually," Lewis laughs, and pulls him in a kiss. "Kinda hot, too. Max's reaction was priceless."

"It was, I gotta admit," Charles snorted. "I should do it more often, just so it's clear you're mine."

"I don't think anyone will challenge you on that, sweetheart, but sure," Lewis laughed.

From the corner of his eye, Charles can see Max, who's watching them from afar. With a grin, he pulls Lewis in another kiss. He makes it extra dirty, just to be sure.

i mostly agree with you lmao but also!!! part of being a fan is being able to say "that makes sense it was the right decision" and also "THAT DECISION SUCKS FUCK THEM" at the same time...... i feel that balance is what makes being a sports fan so interesting

HOWEVER that being said there is a part of me that thinks this could end up being a really bad idea from a sporting perspective and i want to share. let me preface tho with the fact that i really Do Not Like james vowles. every time i see him it makes me remember his time on mercedes and i get heated. so i'm seeing this decision less charitably than others might

ok basically i would agree with the decision to have alex drive more if it looked in the practices like williams had a good chance of making points but uh. they didn't. and also alex has crashed at that corner twice from driver error which does not make me confident in him on this circuit

the issue for me is that in one fell swoop williams has potentially destroyed logan for the rest of the season (depending on his mental fortitude), told logan he's a placeholder, and put alex in a situation where if he doesn't drag the williams to points this weekend there will be a LOT of scrutiny on them. ultimately i understand it was the right decision it just has the unique combo of being insanely unfair from an emotional perspective AND solidifying team issues pretty handily AND having soooooo much that could go wrong that it's almost too stressful to engage with jfkldsfjsadklf

Yeah this perspective 100% makes sense and I appreciate hearing it! I think the fear about alex crashing out two years in a row is legitimately founded given how much everyone is struggling this weekend. But logan also had a moment in practice that probably didn’t help lend them faith, especially given his general issues with crashing (which makes sense, he was a rookie, but if they don’t have full faith in either driver to come out unscathed, it makes more sense to trust your more experienced and less generally crash-y driver). Especially because so far, points seem like they will be extra scarce for the bottom 5 teams this season, where a driver finishes might be an important tiebreaker at the end of the season if the backmarkers are equal - so even if alex doesn’t get points, he does finish further ahead than logan and you need your strongest driver out there to maximize where you finish.

My initial reaction was also a lot of “goddamn that sucks that he’s being punished for alex’s mistake” but i sat with it for a minute and it made a lot of sense, so i came to terms with it (i’m not his fan though, so obviously that’s a lot easier for me than for the people rooting for logan). Hopefully this all works out for the best, but it will be very interesting to see how it all plays out, because yeah if alex does crash, it’s going to bring in a shitstorm (even though we’ll never know how it wouldve gone with logan in the car).

Very overdue post, considering evryones already at austria, but who cares.

Honestly, what a race!

let's start with qualifying, because i did not watch q3 live, and i didnt do a roundup post like i usually do.

Ferrari have not lost pace. it LOOKS like they have, but whats actually happened is that mercedes woke up and decided to be a serious team, and mclaren are now faster than redbull. Perez gave Verstappen a huge tow, only to finish p2 to norris. Piastri made a huge mistake on his last flying lap to get p10 - promoted to p9 after perez's penalty. So essentially the gap from ferrari to RBR is the same, but more cars are IN that gap - both mercs, and mclaren. their race pace is probs right up there with RBR, but the tyre window they'r working with is incredibly small, and they're out of position. p5 and p6 is shocking, and disappointing after looking so good in aus and monaco in particular, but also in jeddah, etc.

due to not watching live i didnt catch the majority of the mid-backfield. hulkenberg again putting the haas in q2, both vcarbs out in q1, which is hugely disappointing.

onto the race.

GEORGE FUCKING RUSSELL?! Whatta move. singlehandedly made my respect for him grow by like 5x. It was shortlived (the RBR still clearly has racepace on the merc) but god. George and Alex both being contenders for overtake of the year rn as they should. He should've got a dotd for that move alone LMAO.

Lando bottling a pole start... yikes. His starts havent been great for a little while now, and he seems to not really know what to do with pole. the zero percent conversion rate... god. It was entirely preventable, too. The move on max was stupid and he got laughed at by lewis and max for defending it in the pressers. The mclaren is faster than the RB but max is still behind its wheel, and he showed us all who he was again this weekend. Unless Lando can shape up, mclaren are unlikely to challenge consistently for wins, since i am of the opinion piastri, although strong, will not have the race pace to fight a) verstappen b) norris in the same car c) leclerc.

Ferrari. No words. Strat was shocking. Need to study carlos sainz under a microscope to figure out where he gets his ego from. Probably going to do a seperate post on them later tonight, but the car (under leclerc) could have podiumed from p5, but they fucked him majorly in the first stint with a) the totally unnecessary contact and b) leaving sainz out front, who was slower.

piastri climbed back up, great race from him. again, i did not watch the race live, i was only listening. so. i missed most of the stuff. perez made up a few places. no safety cars or yellows.

mercedes' race pace isnt bad either. its probably worse than the ferrari's, but if they keep qualifying badly, then their current race pace is fine (although from what I've seen, I think leclerc is locking himself in th sim until he starts getting pole again so).

Overall im excited. Everyone is so, so close going into Austria.

mostly drivers! i feel like i get more of the emotional aspect from the sport through the drivers rather than team pride and things like that. i also just like it when interesting things happen and mostly that's from individual drivers and not teams.

i am rooting for williams and not just bc i get so patriotic over logan but also bc it was exciting to see how they would separate themselves from mercedes... but i do think kinda fucked it... let's not get into all of that now

around midway into the '23 season. singapore was the first race i watched watched (but tbf it was at a airport resturant and it was only the first 12 laps). before that i was still interested in the race but had no way to watch it so i just refreshed twitter a little and checked google to get the results.

okay. so. i don't know what made tumblr recommend me a bunch of miscellaneous f1 smaus but it did and i was in the middle of writers block for another fandom and thought a smau would be great for the fic i was writing. and then i was also just so enamored by this one pic of max:

Who is your favourite driver?

Gewis Hamussel. I love Lewis and George equally and I’ve stood by this for 3 years and I won’t stop now. If I’m forced to pick one for a form I’ll pick Lewis because I loved him first and longer, but otherwise I refuse to choose.

Do you have other favourite drivers?

I will die for Mercedes Reserve/Junior Frederik Vesti. He’s just such a great little dude, cheerful, calm, confident, I LIKE this small (tall) man. Doesn’t hurt he’s a fantastic driver.

Doriane Pin is also a new favourite. Go go pocket rocket!

I also have a confessed love for Jack Doohan, he’s very gender. I suffer a fondness for Yuki, Zhou and sometimes Esteban and Oscar. I also am quite fond of the McLaren and Penske FE drivers (a deep hate for mclaren makes this very conflicting. I am aware.)

Who is your least favourite driver?

Oooof, now it’s easier to list drivers I like than drivers I hate cause it’s a long list, but the crown really has to go to Max Verstappen, with a supporting role for Fernando Alonso. Most drivers I don’t like fall into one of two characters - shitty on track, and shitty off track. For example, I don’t really have a good reason to beef with Roman Stanek as far as I know, but he fucked my f2 drivers enough on track he is now my mortal enemy. On the other side, Lando Norris is a perfectly serviceable driver. But he’s also a cunt. So fuck him. Most driver fall into both on some level, or confirmation bias reinforces it, but Max and Fernando embody both and I could probably give a TED talk about why they damage the sport for the future. Also they’re *deeply* racist. So fuck them.

Do you root for drivers of do you root for teams as well?

Drivers. I’ll root for the team in the case that constructors points will mean good things for my drivers, but I hate the idea of being a corporate fan. Businesses aren’t your friends. I’ll often use merc as a catch all, because both its drivers are my favourites, so it’s easier to speak about the team as a whole. But if both boys left and they dropped Fred and Dori, I’d drop merc like a hot rock.

If you like teams, who do you root for?

I WILL admit a fondness for certain Mercedes engineers like Bono, Shov, James, etc. The love and passion shown in the debriefs and BTS videos- but I don’t really count that as supporting the team so much as the players? It’s complicated, I just think Toto Wolff and Merc upper management fucking suck. Call that what you will. I like James Vowles and the roll he’s been taking at Williams is impressive, but I can’t really say I support Williams when I’m neutral on the drivers. I’ll generally warn against supporting bosses because it’ll always bite you… but I’m a hypocrite and James come back to Merc pls.

How long have you been into F1?

This will be my fifth season watching now. My first race was Austria 2020

What got you into F1?

My dad has been a life long f1 fan, from the 70’s to now, so I grew up with it always being around, but it wasn’t until I was back home from uni during the pandemic that I sat down to watch with him, because he was finally willing to explain it to me. I also came across f1 memes on Reddit and it got me hooked. I didn’t join F1blr until 22 though, when I discovered rpf content organically.

I’ve been a hamilton fan from day one, he’s a sort of home town hero, and I remember being in the room and my dad’s cheering when he won the first championship. Runs in the family

Do you enjoy fanfic/RPF?

Be fuckin wild if I didn’t, considering I write it lmao.

How do you view new fans?

I say this as the strongest compliment I can— I have no fuckin idea how you guys survive being here given the shit show of the last couple years- but I’m always excited to welcome new people to the Gewis side of things.

I also end up frequently as the guy going “how can you support x given their shitty history ” only to learn someone is like a couple months in and understandably has no idea about that yet, leading to an accidental crash course on the current grids fuck ups. I’m very sorry to those people, it will happen again.

Are your friends and family into f1 as well?

Here and there, my dad is probably the most passionate of them and its my favourite when we can watch together but my mom will ask what’s going on, and my larger family are fans but in the very… het sense of it. We would struggle to watch together. As for friends, my poor long suffering partner let me drag her into it (go follow @thatsmemate ), and most of my friends are from f1blr, so of course they are.

Some of my old ex stevetony friends I still keep touch with don’t watch, but ask me every now and then what’s been going on in the f1 world, because they are deeply sweet.

Are you open to talking to other fans/making friends?

Always. Always, always, always. I am generally a nervous guy in new places and conversations, but once settled I’ll chat your ear off.

I do often need other people to reach out to me first, I can’t often tell when someone wants to speak, so I wait for them to speak first, and when chatting I get forgetful and can struggle to remember to reply when busy. Some people find that a turn off, and that’s fair enough.

What I’m saying is if I don’t reach out first or reply slow. Don’t assume I hate you, I just struggle to juggle all my tasks these days. Disability is a bitch.

okay so here are my driver thoughts, based on the actual driving and performances and not personalities/who I like best -

- red bull - i think rb would be silly to let checo go. I don’t feel very strongly about him as a person, but he’s proven time and time again that he can at least get close to max. we know no ones matching max’s level, so being close is the best you can do. checo has had wins and lots of podiums these past couple of years, and has proven that he can drive that car reliably with minimal mistakes. if I was rb, i’d be keeping him. there’s no way i’d trade a reliable driver like checo for danny ric i’m sorry but it doesn’t make sense

- ferrari - i fully understand why they’ve chosen to bring lewis on for 25, but there’s no way they’re not slightly debating their decision at the moment. carlos has been on the podium for 100% of races he’s started this year, and lewis hasn’t even finished top 5. yes maybe it’s the car etc etc but… there’s no way they’re not doubting their choice even a tiny bit. if lewis doesn’t prove himself quickly next year i think there are gonna be some regrets

- mercedes - I don’t know if they’re gonna be able to sign any of the big names. they say they have their eye on carlos, fernando etc but honestly they’re not a desirable team. no one wants to go to a team that’s struggling with the car and has been for years. no one wants to go to the team that’s fucked it all up for a 7 time world champion. alonso said himself the other day that it’d be a downgrade for him. they might sign kimi and try and teach and mould him into a senior driver. signing someone young and new might be their best bet honestly

- VCARB - GIVE LIAM LAWSON THAT GODDAMN SEAT. car issue or not, dannys career has taken a steep decline over the last few years. I just think we’re holding so many young racers back (lawson, doohan, drugovich) to keep the same older ones on the grid, even when they’re not performing. yuki is really shining this year so far, and he’s outshining danny massively. judging by his performances this year and last, I don’t think any teams are gonna want to sign mr ricciardo. if they didn’t want him after mclaren and he’d won in that car… why would they want him now?

- mclaren - obvs the papaya boys are going to be there together until at least 26, so no worries there. but… i hope there’s a car upgrade soon, because at the moment, that doesn’t look like a race winning car to me. it won’t happen (at least not for like 5 years at least), but… dare i say i’d love to see lando in a red bull 🤭. it’s obviously unrealistic but god imagine him in that rocketship of a car, with his talent… same with oscar!! I think if you gave those papayas a better car (it’s decent, don’t get me wrong), they’d be unstoppable

- I don’t think logan or zhou will have seats next year. not too sure about the haas guys… they’re weirdly actually doing okay at the moment. I think that williams seat will definitely be open, so it’ll be very interesting to see who slides into that.

- not sure where carlos will end up honestly. most probably sauber, because they’ll be audi in 26 and his dad has a lot of links there. but, I think he’ll really struggle in that car for 25, because frankly, it’s fucking terrible. I just hope he’s happy with wherever he ends up.
