Kicking Off the Year with Possibility: Exploring Psychology through the Pagdadala Model
The start of a new year is always filled with excitement, anticipation, and, for many, a bit of nervousness. For me, it also marks the beginning of a new chapter in my journey—from a psychology student to a clinician. I was thrilled to share this journey during my first talk of the year, thanks to an invitation from the NU Psychology Society - Manila. This opportunity allowed me to reflect on my path and how I’ve navigated the complexities of psychology through the Pagdadala Model.

Psychology and the Art of Possibility: Turning Imagination into Reality
Psychology is often perceived as a field that delves deep into the human mind, understanding behavior, emotions, and the complexities of mental health. However, it’s also a field that is rich with possibilities—possibilities that can be shaped and turned into reality through imagination, creativity, and, most importantly, resilience. This is where the Pagdadala Model comes into play.
The Pagdadala Model: A Journey Through Burden-Bearing
The Pagdadala Model is a Filipino psychological framework that resonates deeply with our experiences as students and professionals. It’s a journey that reflects the burdens we carry (ang dinadala), the ones who carry them (ang nagdadala), the process of carrying (ang pagdadala), and the destinations and paths we take (ang patutunguhan and ang pagdadaanan).
Ang Dinadala (The Burden): Whether it's the challenges of studying, the stress of exams, or the pressure to excel, the burdens we carry as students are heavy. These are the daily struggles we face—ang hirap mag-aral!
Ang Nagdadala (The Bearer): And who carries these burdens? It's us. We bear the weight of our responsibilities, dreams, and the expectations placed upon us.
Ang Pagdadala (The Process): The process of carrying these burdens often involves engaging in co-curricular activities, exploring different fields of psychology like Industrial or Abnormal Psychology, and deciding on our future paths—RPm? Master’s? Clinical? Industrial? Educational? Theories of personality? Each step in this process shapes our journey.
Ang Pagdadaanan (The Path): The path we take is filled with choices and challenges. For instance, my thesis on "Internet Gaming Disorder: Demographic Factors, Manifestations, Functional Consequences, and Other Factors" was a significant milestone in my academic journey. It was a time of sleepless nights, intense research, and deep introspection.
Ang Pinagdadaanan (The Experience): The experiences we go through—walang tulog, the decision between work or pursuing a master's, the exhaustion, and the constant question, kaya ko pa ba?—all these shape who we become.
Patutunguhan (The Destination): Eventually, we reach our destinations. For me, this meant becoming a consultant clinical/developmental psychologist, an instructor at UST, a Consultant Psychologist at CPPS & Wayside, and the Learning & Development Deputy Director at #MentalHealthPH. It also meant becoming an emerging leader recognized by the Global Psychology Alliance. These roles are not just titles; they are the culmination of the journey I’ve taken, filled with compelling stories, challenges, and growth.
Great Stories Are Built on Compelling Characters, Plots, and Themes
Every psychologist’s journey is a story worth telling, filled with characters (ourselves and those we help), plots (the paths we take), and themes (the psychological frameworks we apply). My journey is just one of many, but it’s a testament to the power of possibility, resilience, and the ever-evolving nature of psychology.
As we move forward into 2024, I am reminded that while the path may be challenging, it is also filled with endless possibilities. I am grateful to the NU Psychology Society - Manila for the opportunity to share my story and for the chance to inspire others to turn their imagination into reality.

Dear Aspiring Psychometrician,
I found this from Code of Ethics as I study Psycholocal Assessment.
Since the Tarasoff case in 1974, duty to warn and duty to protect have become important as concepts in the field of social work and other helping disciplines. Being able to protect potential victims from harm and protecting clients from self-harm have become ethical obligations in social work practice. This area needs to be explored and understood by social work practitioners, educators, and social work students. Duty to warn and duty to protect have ethical implications for all social Walcott, Cerundolo, and Beck (2001) describe the facts of the Tarasoff case. Prosenjit Poddar and Tatiana Tarasoff were students at UC Berkeley. Poddar stated to the university health science psychologist that he intended to kill an unnamed woman, who was identified as Tatiana Tarasoff. Although the psychotherapist did not directly warn Tarasoff or the family, the psychologist notified the police, who interviewed Poddar for commitment. The police only warned Poddar to stay away from Tarasoff. After Tarasoff returned from a summer in Brazil, Poddar murdered Tatiana with a knife. Tarasoff’s family sued the campus police and the university health service for negligence. Walcott, Cerundolo, and Beck (2001) cite the second Tarasoff case, establishing a duty to protect.
When a therapist determines, or pursuant to the standards of his profession should determine, that his patient presents a serious danger of violence to another, he incurs an obligation to use reasonable care to protect the intended victim against such danger. The discharge of the duty may require the therapist to take one or more various steps, depending on the nature of the case. Thus, it may call for him to warn the intended victim or others likely to appraise the victims of that danger, to notify the police or take whatever steps are reasonably necessary under the circumstances (p. 340).
The Tarasoff case imposed a liability on all mental health professionals to protect a victim from violent acts. The first Tarasoff case imposed a duty to warn the victim, whereas the second Tarasoff case implies a duty to protect (Kopels & Kagle, 1993). There are many concerns about the implications of the Tarasoff case, especially around the confidentiality of the client-social worker relationship and violent clients avoiding treatment.
Since the second Tarasoff decision in 1976, there has been argument and debate as to the applicability of this judgment to the client-social worker relationship. The environment has changed for social work and confidentiality, as social workers now divulge confidential information to third-party payers. Tarasoff is an important decision with legal implications, and only 13 states in the U.S. lacked Tarasoff-like provisions at the time of Herbert’s report in 2002.
Duty to warn means that the social worker must verbally tell the intended victim that there is a foreseeable danger of violence. Duty to protect implies a therapist determining that his or her patient presents a serious danger of violence to another and an obligation to use reasonable care to protect the intended victim against danger (Harvard Mental Health Letter, 2008, January). This may entail a warning, police notification, or other necessary steps.
Duty to warn and duty to protect have implications for social work practitioners in the fields of mental health, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and medical social work. There are also serious implications for malpractice and unethical behavior. What began as a mental health issue has been expanded to other fields of social work practice.
Duty to Warn and Duty to Protect in Mental Health
In the field of mental health, it is difficult to actually make predictions of client violence. The Harvard Mental Health Letter (2006, January) makes recommendations for handling duty to protect with homicidal and suicidal patients.
The principles for managing a threat of violence are generally the same as those for dealing with a suicidal threat. Therapists should find out whether a patient has ever seriously injured or thought about seriously injuring another person. Especially with new patients or any patients whose symptoms are becoming worse, it is important to know whether they are dangerous to others and whether the danger is due to mental illness. Is the patient losing the capacity to control violent impulses? (p.4)
Duty to protect can involve warning the potential victim, notifying the police, starting a commitment hearing, informing mental health evaluators of the threat, and utilizing professional supervision. Duty to protect involves working with homicidal and suicidal clients. The obligation of duty to protect varies from state to state (Dolgoff, Loewenberg, & Harrington, 2009).
Failure to protect potential victims of violence can result in losing one’s job at an agency. Consider the following hypothetical example.
A professional social worker conducted an intake interview with a client with a history of mental health problems and violence toward his father. The client was somewhat delusional and stated that he might hurt his father that evening. The social worker made no effort to commit the patient for hospitalization. That evening, the patient became violent and broke his father’s leg. The next day, the social worker was fired for negligence.
Protecting the well being of homicidal and suicidal clients is the obligation of professional social workers. Social workers should frequently utilize supervision and consultation when working on this issue of duty to protect, because it has ethical and malpractice considerations.

TG: Anxiety
The worst thing about anxiety is that it feels like a slow death. Or an abusive relationship that feels like a slow death.
It doesn't kill you right away. It drains you and drains you even more until you become unfamiliar even to yourself.
You look at the mirror and see a stranger. You have no memory of who you were yesterday, the day before that, the day before that.
Everything is a blur. Except maybe for that thought that obsessively repeats itself in your mind without your control. That inexplicable paralyzing fear, that sadness you can't take away.
You wish you could go back to a safer time, a safer place. But you can't, because you know deep at the back of your mind that you are past the point of no return.
Who you were is now a distant memory. A place you can no longer visit.
And as if you can break-up with anxiety whenever you want to. As if there is a stop button for the thoughts to stop playing. As if you can ever be normal again.

The battle of the weak
You may fail a hundred times but it doesn't mean you're weak, you may cry a thousand river but it doesn't mean you're giving up
Showing your weaknesses doesn't really mean you are no longer capable of achieving greater things, it's just, everyone is different, I am different, you are different, we all are, I may cry at the movie titanic and you wont, I may not be scared in the movie conjuring and you might be screaming to death, I may love to consume a tub of ice cream without worrying what will I gain and you will, you might enjoy the company of your friends and in my case I don't
See, we are all different okay? If you fail, rise up, if you fail again, try again, if you failed again for the third time it means you have to work harder, improve yourself unleash your best potential, you may say to yourself, "I am at my best" but come think of it, if you are at your best why do you have to try again? See the difference? Let's stop complaining about other people's lackness or either not seeing our worth because we knew to ourselves that we are the best, instead let's build a bridge of understanding that things are not really meant for us, it may not be easy but soon enough you will realize that understanding individual differences will be your greatest weapon
We all have individual differences, and this differences are the one creating walls to someone's life, being able to understand this, we will be able to help them break down their wall and see the beauty of our world
I believe in your dream and your future is big, prove them that they are wrong, show them your best potential , quitting is never an option, life may be difficult but quitting is never a choice, you are capable of greater things, I believe in you
Being weak is never a sign of failure, you've faught for that long, what quit now? Keep in mind that it is not the situation that make us sad, it is on how we view the situation, you should now the difference, positive thinking is the key, stop magnifying all the negativity, instead, try look into the bright side, I know it is hard to be positive when you are struggling, but, it is worth a try
being able to acknowledge your weaknesses can make you even stronger, all you have to do is believe, you are stronger than your thought, and you are worthy of everything.

Just wanna share something I am quiet proud of.
May nakilala ako from tiktok live, and mental health advocate siya. May group kami na laging active everytime na maglalive siya. And Choco, in particular, decided to create a group chat, para magkausap-usap pa kami even after live.
Nagstart ‘to probably a week ago. Everyday nagkakapalitan kami ng conversations like we’re friends for a long time. Every night nagkakausap kami via zoom, to share stories, to share rants, to share problems, anything under the sun.
Nakakatuwang makarinig ng mga stories galing sakanila. Marami kang matutunan, marami kang realizations, na kung saan mararamdaman mong hindi lang pala ikaw yung nakakaranans ng ganoong senaryo. Mararamdaman mong may karamay ka, may makakasama ka, may nagmamahal sayo, may makakaintindi sayo.
Hindi kami professionals when it comes to advocating mental health issues. Pero, that group was created para may makausap sa panahong may mga episodes na nagaganap.
Hindi ko na matandaan pero feeling ko 2yrs ako nagsuffer sa mental health ko. Nakakalungkot at hindi ko sila kaagad nakilala nung mga panahong hinang-hina na’ko. Pero nakakatuwang malaman na despite sa mga nararanasan namin, andito kami, patuloy na lumalaban.
Hindi ko alam kung paano ko ieexpress yung gratitude ko kay Choco. Dahil the first time na manood ako ng live, siya agad nakita ko. Sobrang random ng nangyare. ‘Yun din yung time na hindi ako okay. ‘Yun yung time na naghahanap ako ng kasama. ‘Yun yung time na naghahanap ako ng makakausap. ‘Yung yung time na manhid nako sa lahat. ‘Yun yung time na sukong-suko na naman ako.
Hindi ko alam if ako lang nakaka-experience nito. Pero parang naka-schedule na yung bigat ng pakiramdam ko or yung ganito, yung bigla ka nalang hindi okay.
1st quarter, within those months, diyan ako nakakaramdam ng lungkot. Hanggang April, hanggang ngayon. Pero dahil sakanila... mas nagiging okay ako.
Marami sa’min hindi clinically diagnosed, pero nangangailangan ng counseling.

🌟 transforming lives: my journey with #MentalHealthPH 🌟
Being part of MentalHealthPH has been an incredibly fulfilling and heartwarming journey. I started as a volunteer for the #UsapTayo campaign, which blossomed into my role as the Deputy Director for Learning and Development. In this position, I've had the privilege of doing what I am most passionate about – educating people about mental health. I've traveled to various communities and workplaces, sharing deeply personal stories and experiences about mental health, fostering connections, and breaking down barriers.

One of the theories that resonates deeply with my work is Carl Rogers' Humanistic Theory. Rogers believed in the inherent goodness of people and their potential for self-growth when provided with the right environment. This theory underpins the essence of our efforts at MentalHealthPH. We create safe, non-judgmental spaces where individuals can express themselves freely, experience unconditional positive regard, and embark on their journey towards self-actualization.
Through these interactions, I witness firsthand the transformative power of empathy, understanding, and acceptance. Every story shared, every tear shed, and every smile that follows is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the profound impact of human connection.
