This old geezer has a loss shorthand symbol on their laptop lid (right beside a kirk/gorn heart-shaped sticker) for the very purpose to fuck with students' mind
Found my 53yo very-much-not-online father in the kitchen today meticulously arranging cutlery on the countertop and i was like 'what are you doing' and he looked up at me with the world's most shit-eating grin and said "Your mother told me this is how you rick-roll the Youth" and i looked over and it was fucking. Top 5 places in England!
Initially I thought this would be difficult, then my brain kept supplying places 🤣
1. Birmingham - I do love the city where I live (although I don't actually live in Brum, but it's the nearest big town). Pre Peaky Blinders, Brum had a terrible reputation. It was viewed as dirty, ugly and weirdly stupid (mainly due to the accent).
Brum has always been way more than that. It's a huge melting pot of cultures, has developed it's own curry dish - the Balti (authentic ones from Sparkhill are allegedly the best), has an incredible history as City of a Thousand Trades and has never been afraid to try new things.
And we have more canals than Venice!
It has the third largest St Patrick's Day parade (after Dublin and New York), and a MASSIVE Pride celebration.
Plus Birmingham is responsible for heavy metal. There is no way it could have existed anywhere else. Listening to Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Napalm Death etc whilst walking round town gives you the perfect soundtrack. Plus I also find it hilarious that none of the above have lost their Brummie accent, despite living elsewhere for decades.
2. Canterbury - I spent 3 very happy years in Canterbury for uni. When I first visited, as we drove into the city, I thought "I'm home". It's the smallest city in England and when I was there, it only had 1 nightclub. It does have over 80 pubs tho. It's a very odd place, the cathedral dominates the landscape and it has a lot of really weird shops and eateries. I will always love it because of uni, even though it has changed so much in the years since.
3. Whitby - I have only been to Whitby for the goth weekend, but I utterly love it. The food is incredible, whilst heavily fish oriented, there's the fab Pig in a Bun shop, and there was an excellent (if bizarre) World War II themed tapas bar. Justin's Chocolate shop is a must visit. Their slabs of chocolate are incredible. Whitby has very few chain stores, so it's all odd little shops and exciting things to find which adds to the charm.
Goth Weekend gets very busy with the doilies and tourists who come to stare at the goths (who are usually hiding in a pub), but when they sod off, we have the best time!
4. Cornwall - there's something magical about Cornwall. It's part of England but also Celtic, has it's own language and some of the oldest folk customs (the Obby Oss dance is incredibly old). The beaches are fantastic, it has links to King Arthur (Tintagel) and is very pagan & witchy. It's also a great place for holidays and I had one of the best faux mojitos I've ever had in Newquay. There's just something wonderful about seeing the sea and hearing the waves.
5. Manchester - I always get excited visiting Manchester. I've had some wonderful times there, usually for bands (first saw Rammstein and Blue Gillespie there), queer stuff (Bifests and SM Dykes), and wrestling (FTLOW). It's so easy to navigate and I always feel like I need to explore it more. Afflecks Palace is an absolute gem (or at least it was). Again Manchester has an incredible music history, and it's rightly proud of this. There is a rivalry between Brum and Mancs, but Brum will always win for me

Kinda feel like there's some untapped meme/reaction image potential from old horror movie trailers...
