ALMOST LIVESTREAM: MIKI YAMANAKA with Adam O’Farill, Caroline Davis, Pablo Menares, and Kush Abadey, SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB, 31 AUGUST 2024, 6 pm set
MIKI YAMANAKA usually plays trio and late and with husband Jimmy Macbride on drums. Here she was with horns (she was fangirling over playing with Adam O’Farrill but I was intrigued to see alto saxophonist Caroline Davis) and Melissa Aldana’s rhythm section. So this was an intriguing gig for the ways the differences would illuminate what I know and like of her playing.
She is above all a leader with an approach—smart, modern but with a firm grounding in the hard bop and beyond world. She plays Jaki Byard’s Mrs Parker of KC regularly and here gave room for the horns to explore while digging in herself for a robust and vigorous solo. She’s right that O’Farrill is a worthy player drawing on the likes of Roy Hargrove and Woody Shaw (though I know them poorly and indeed trumpeters in general), I bet. That is, melodic with a comfortable tone but adventurous. Still it was Davis’ sinuous linear playing that grabbed me with its invention and drive.
Having a bigger band showcased Yamanaka’s big ears as an accompanist. She didn’t have to be as big in the ensembles while still turning it up in her solos. Jimmy Macbride is a wonderful trio drummer though he has played band gigs without her and acquits himself well. Kush Abadey is so tasteful and sympathetic with Aldana, so it’s not like he is overpowering. He and Pablo Menares were both in a bigger context than they usually are, not just the second horn but her big piano instead of a guitar. But everybody is a pro here and all took advantage of the musical opportunities.
She once again covered Patrice Rushen whom she charmingly doesn’t know. Perhaps this band and this earlier time prompted her to play more of her own tunes which have enough for everyone to chew on and probably do benefit from having horns. Still she plays at least one a set and I recognized more than one title.
Miki Yamanaka is getting up there with Ari Hoenig and Alan Broadbent whose regular gigs are can’t miss. So I would have caught even “just a usual” set. But I’m glad to have seen these other sides of her.

It's Friday and what should be a quiet afternoon is getting quite noisy.
-Legendary comic artist/writer Neal Adams passed away yesterday. Adams co-created Green Lantern John Stewart, Batman nemesis Ra's-Al Ghul and Man-Bat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was also a strong advocate for creators rights and was one of the front leaders and secure credit recognition and pensions for Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
-BATWOMAN has fought her last battle on the CW. The show has been axed after 3 seasons.
Tumblr media
There was more behind-the-scenes drama on the series than in front of the camera. S1 saw the departure of series star Ruby Rose. At the time of their leaving the show, Rose gave being allergic to the costume as the rationale for leaving. Last year, Rose admitted that they left the show due it being a "toxic workplace" alleging unsafe working conditions to led to their accident requiring surgery and being pressured to return to the show while still recovering. Rose also accused costar Dougray Scott, who played Batwoman's father, of bullying women on set and detailed a run in with costar Camrus Johnson (Luke Fox/Batwing) who Rose says got on their case for returning to set late from a doctor's appointment.
Scott disputes that he was abusive on set, WB-TV backed him up during their investigation and even said it was Rose who had multiple complaints lodged against them.
Johnson had this to say at the time.
Tumblr media
Things were quiet after new star Javicia Leslie took up the cowl, but it was too late.
-Also gone is LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Either the continuing Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard trial is taking up everyone's attention or people don't care about THE WALKING DEAD anymore. Melissa MacBride has existed the planned Carol and Darryl spinoff show.
Her team's statement.
“Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe. Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spinoff focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year. Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future,” AMC said in a statement Wednesday.
For some reason fans have decided to blame Norman Reedus for her departure which lead Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan) to defend his pal.
Why must you all have Papa Winchester yell at you? You know a Winchester loves nothing more than to create Twitter drama (:: eyes Jared Padalecki::)
Tumblr media
-Marvel gives a slight twist to their upcoming slap, swapping out dates for the CAPTAIN MARVEL sequel, THE MARVELS, for ANT-MAN & THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA.
THE MARVELS (with Tom Hiddleston's rumoured fiancee, Zawe Ashton joining)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
previously held a release date of Feb. 17, 2023 but is now moving to July 28, 2023.
ANT-MAN & THE WASP (with newcomer Jonathan Majors, late of LOKI)takes on the Feb. 17th slate.
-Someone who doesn't have to worry about day and dates is director Jon Watts (SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME) who has exited the FANTASTIC FOUR reboot.

Couch Tour: The Roxy Coss Quintet, via Small’s Jazz Club, 10 September 2020
I dropped into this free one despite the fact that gluttony is a deadly sin and I was looking forward to my first concert with my Jazz Gallery membership in the early evening.  But Roxy Coss has shown up as an articulate voice in the women in jazz articles in recent years and friend Fritz interviewed her for his Jazz Spectrum radio show.
She is a worthy player but not as exciting for my money as Melissa Aldana.  She has a pretty stable quintet, solid compositional skills, and an academic background via the distinguished William Patterson University program which has Bill Charlap now but has had Thad Jones and Mulgrew Miller (one tune was dedicated to him) among the faculty.  Her compositions are a fine launching point for her and the band.  Like her playing, they can be exploratory but feel a bit studied.  That probably is the difference with Aldana who seems more a creature of the clubs.
That said, she was so grateful to play with her band for the first time since March and they all rose to the occasions.  I sensed little rust.  Alex Wintz shares the front line on guitar.  It works and he uses some pedals but is still well within a jazz framework.  I really like pianist Miki Yamanaka who incongruously wore traditional Japanese attire (a kimono with the bundle in the back) while displaying real power at the piano and an amused engagement with her bandmates.  She soloed early and well in the opener but her other openings were more limited.  But she contributed in the rhythm section and in the open when she could, including, appropriately enough on “Mulgrew.”  There she worked nicely with Jimmy MacBride on drums who was rhythmically inventive but not as magical at the kit as others of late.  It may be a feature of the live feed but Rick Rosato’s bass only came through on a couple of solos.
Again, Coss’s playing is fluid, effective, and ranging, but I was even more struck with her compositions which showcase the band but also have a pointed programmatic character.  The opener was “Mr. President” for the incumbent and so she hopes to retire it as a tune.  Of course, it started turbulently before a burning straight ahead solo and Yamanka’s power.  “Choices” was about abortion rights and the “Don’t Cross the Coss” closer was confident hard bop.
The center of the set was a newly completed suite of “Body/Soul/Heart/Spirit” with the last the result of quarantine.  They are properly evocative and allow the band, but of course sax and guitar primarily, to explore.  But she has composed/arranged nice interactions within the band to extend the conversation.
Once again, these streams are a chance to see players whom I know very sparingly, so it’s a gift.
Roxy Coss--composer, bandleader, tenor.
