Meliae - one of four types of dryads (Ref)

The dryads of the ash tree were called the Meliae. The Meliae sisters tended the infant Zeus in Rhea's Cretan cave. They were the Oread-nymphs of mountain ash-tree, were born from the drops of blood that fell on Gaia (the Earth) when Cronus castrated Uranus (the Sky). Oreads are mountain and cave nymphs in Greek mythology. Oreads differ from each other according to their dwelling.

In The Work and the Day by the ancient Greek epic poet Hesiod, the ash trees, perhaps meaning the Melian nymphs, are said to have been the progenitors of the generation of men belonging to Hesiod's Bronze Age.

They were the wives of the silver race of Man and mothers of the Bronze, the third generation of mankind. They nursed their sons on the honey-sap (Greek meli) of the ash, and armed them with spears crafted from the wood of their trees (Greek melia). The Bronze were an overly warlike race who incurred the wrath of Zeus and were destroyed in the floods of the Great Deluge.

While I get that the first Xenoblade's affinity system can be frustrated with how slow it is to build, and how it locks heart-to-hearts until you meet the requirements, it still is honestly my favourite approach to all these things in any Xenoblade game. Because by locking specific heart-to-hearts behind specific affinity levels, you can get into progressively deeper topics for each heart-to-heart for each pairing, without having to lock them behind being in later areas or specific story progression. It's kinda like taking some of the good parts of Fire Emblem's support system, even if these conversations don't necessarily build on each other like those.

But also, the whole mechanic of having party members gift each other collectibles is super great. Not just because it gives collectibles another purpose aside from being just used for quests, but it's also super fun to see what character likes which kinds of things. Like-

Shulk's favourite colour is most likely blue, and he's more of a dog person than a cat person

There's like three different colours that could be Reyn's favourite, and it's just funny to imagine him trying to figure out what things from the strange category are, what they're for, and getting frustrated over it

Fiora's favourite colour is probably red, and she does like flowers, even though a quiet moment between Melia and Nene implies the opposite

Dunban's favourite colour is either black or white, and- Him disliking things that Fiora likes?? Peak sibling energy. But also, what the fuck, Dunban

Sharla's favourite colour is most likely yellow, which is honestly pretty interesting, cause it isn't really reflected in anything in her design or other parts of her character that are relevant to the main story. And her dislike of bugs is actually even brought up in a heart-to-heart with Dunban, too!

And then Riki's favourite colour probably being green is also interesting for much the same reason why Sharla's favourite colour is interesting. But it's also kinda surprising to see that he likes part at all, given that the above-mentioned heart-to-heart also mentions that Shulk once gave him a part, and he had no idea what to make of it

Which leaves Melia, whose favourite colour is purple - and her not liking nature and bugs is just peak sheltered kid energy.

So. Melia and Nia being Queens, yeah? We still largely in the dark on that one?

Ok so like Melia would’ve been a queen regardless of if the plot of 1 even happened but why is she Queen Of The Literal Whole Entire World? Idk. Apparently, unless a huge important chunk of the art book has been left untranslated, unexplained.

Nia being A Queen at all is never explained either. Sure in her backstory she was the daughter of a Lord but a lord who spent all of his money and also was of a country that got steamrolled and colonized by two competing empires simultaneously so like idk if Nia is going to be inheriting any titles let alone if that title would give her any sort of claim to becoming Queen Of The Literal Whole World

My first assumption was that because Melia and Nia are the longest-lived characters of the main cast, if the casts were to be involved in the creation of Origin in any way, they would just naturally rise to the top eventually just through sheer force of “well she’s been on this project for 120 years so she knows what’s going on” and being CEO of Origin got translated into “Queen” in Z’s little frozen in time dollhouse world… but then in Noah’s flashback to before the worlds collided they were already going to see the Queen so what… she was already Queen before the endless now?

Do you think being Queen is an elected position in the xenoblade universe? Did Nia and Melia both win like 46 elections in a row? Much to think about

Okay, how do I explain this...

There are parts of this theory that are rooted in logic and parts that are wild speculation, but I think the overall theory is possible, albeit a little crazy. Then again, a lot of things in this game are crazy.

In short, my theory is that Zetta also has a form of Archetype power just like Melia does. But I don't think it comes from the actual Archetype; I think it's something similar but opposite. Because the Archetype is depicted as a golden triangle, I've been imagining this inverse Archetype as an upside-down silver triangle. Hey wait a minute.

Yeah, my theory is that this "inverse Archetype" is actually the Core. Outside of the visual similarity, we know that the Core is linked to the Interceptors' power, and they can transform just like Melia and Erin. The Core is also connected to the Ley Lines, and in the Karma Files, it mentions that Rifts form whenever a Ley Line is pierced. Zetta is the only character we know of who can directly interact with the Ley Lines to create Rift Pokemon*. Perhaps this is his version of the "superpowers" Melia, Erin, Allen, and Alice have because of the Archetype. If that's the case, then it would make complete sense that his power comes from the Core instead.

(*Quick note, I'm aware that there are other "Rifts" not created by Zetta, but a lot of them aren't Rifts in the lore, just in the gameplay mechanics. Carnivine, Dufaux, and Talon all became "Rifts" through alternate means, and though Ferrothorn and Hippowdon are real Rifts, they were created from rift matter that Bladestar stole from Team Xen (so they likely come from Zetta's power too, in a very roundabout way). The only other Rifts can't be explained this way are Volcanion, which Zetta very well could've made off-screen, and Aelita, which makes sense because Aelita turned into a Rift due to Vivian's curse. And Vivian already had a connection with the Ley Lines, that's how she could sense where people and Pokemon were. Okay back to the theory!)

The description of the Core also mentions that it contains and transports information about all life on Earth. That sounds a lot like something Zygarde, the pokemon responsible for keeping balance, would use, right? We currently don't know anything about the Zygarde host except their age: 25. Oddly enough, this is Zetta's biological age too. I say it's odd because most of the Xen Executives don't have specific canon ages, and if he's a clone of Melia, why make him so much older in the first place? It could be a coincidence, but I find it suspicious. Especially considering that everything with a Z name has been linked to the Core in some way: Zygarde, Zeight, Zorrialyn being where Castle Zygara once was.

To be clear, do I think Zetta being connected to the Core means he's an Interceptor? Absolutely not. Do I think there are three other Core-hosts like with the Archetype? Probably not. But I can't look past the fact that just after we get this lore dump about the Core, Crescent gives Zetta's pokeball to Melia. And in this teaser screenshot for v14, there's a new icon in the top left with Zetta's face and what appears to be the Interceptor's Wish. I'm not going to speculate about this screenshot because I have no idea what it means really, but at this point it's impossible to deny that Zetta is going to be important in Chapter 16.

Some last bonus points in this theory, aka the part where I start wildly speculating: When you combine the Archetype triangle and the proposed inverse Archetype triangle (whether it's actually the Core or a different thing), it would make the alchemical symbol for aether.

In alchemy, aether represents the space that isn't filled by any of the natural elements. It was thought to be the breath of gods, and harnessing the power of aether could connect the physical world to the spiritual one. Since Rejuvenation is a pokemon game, most players are already familiar with the word aether because of the Aether Foundation. The Aether Foundation created Type:Null, which was intended to be a manmade Arceus but failed, and they had to put on the helmet to contain its power. Rejuvenation acknowledges this backstory, calling it an "inconsistency" that two more Type:Null can be found in Aevium. Zepto is an obvious metaphor for Zetta's backstory as a clone, but I'd like to think the aether connection could mean something.

Speaking of inconsistencies, when you play chess against Zetta in the Nightmare Realm, all of the pieces depict characters in the game, and they all have a quote related to the character. For example, Neved's piece says "Your family before all else." All of the Xen executives are depicted as chess pieces here except for Zetta. This might just be because he's literally sitting across the board from you, but Risa (the Risa from the Nightmare Realm, not Clear pretending to be Risa) is also a piece on the board. Her piece is broken though, and it's not the only one. Eden's piece is broken too, and their quote ends in "Defiled." One other chess piece ends this way, one that seems to be missing a head. The full quote is, "To perpetuate consistency through inconsistency. The descendant of Zed. Defiled." There's the letter Z again. In an absence of other characters this could refer to, I'm assuming this piece is meant to be Zetta, which would mean that inconsistencies and being a "descendant" are more important to his character than we've been lead to believe. Could this be a hint that he's connected to the unknown Zygarde host?

Again, this last part is just wild speculation! The core (pun not intended) of this theory is that Zetta has his own version of the Archetype powers and maybe even his own transformation. I think it's likely that those powers would come from the Core, considering the lore we get in the Karma Files, but I'm not entirely sure. Whether I'm right or not, I'm just really excited for my favorite solosis to get more screen time.

asteroid pholus (5145) and tattoos: ☄

pholus, son of silenus and melia, was one of the only wise and docile centaurs in greek mythology (the other being chiron). he sheltered himself in a cave on mount pholoe and was a good friend of the hero hercules.

on one of hercules' journeys, he passed by this mountain and pholus welcomed him into his cave for a meal. but when he opens a wineskin for hercules during their feast, the wine's aroma escapes the cave and enrages all of the centaurs nearby.

hercules kills most of the centaurs with poison-tipped arrows before the others flee elsewhere. after the altercation, pholus leaves his cave to bury the bodies of the centaurs he once knew. but mistakenly, while examining the arrows in their bodies, he poisons himself by dropping one on his foot.

i personally associate pholus with tattooing because he pricks himself with a sharp object in his story. generally speaking, pholus has a strong connection with needles, arrows, sharp weapons, etc.

also because the tone is completely different from the rest of the floor's analysis due to my swapping into scientific introduction mode halfway through instead of the PM autism mode which i usually write in. for any future Abnormalities which have a similarly sensetive thematic i will do the same as here, linking back to this post with the same warning to make it easier to avoid.

The story of “Today’s Shy Look” is one of a person being forced to express themselves to the community despite being shy, they wanted them to express emotions to show that they are happy - Shy Look took to flaying their skin and carving 5 faces on different patches, so that they would be able to wear these masks and express their emotions, pleasing the people of their community; 

ostensibly Today’s Shy Look’s story is one of neurodivergence, more specifically developmental disorders such as ADHD, or in this story’s case, Autism, fitting the thematic of an inability to express oneself, and a societal expectation to do so.

The flaying of the child’s skin is analogous to the harm that this societal pressure can create among children who diverge from the norm, having to change themselves in order to please others, to fit the permanent square peg into the permanent round hole; to climb up the slope of the bell curve; to become Normal.

The story may also be read in a more literal sense, the harm which society places on divergent children being not only that of an inordinate social pressure, but the actions which may follow, actions which bare a much more direct parallel to the child’s flaying of their skin.

There is a correlation between self harming and Alexithymia (Norman et al., 2020), a common symptom in ASD (Kinnaird et al., 2019); Additionally there is proposedly a correlation with ASD and developing psychiatric disorders, specifically depression and anxiety (Lugnegård et al., 2011);

Due to a harder time understanding emotions and an inability to properly express them, individuals with ASD are more likely to self harm (Vandewalle & Melia, 2021)

; those who lack healthy support, are more prone to viewing themselves as being “incorrect”, leading to attempted “Self correction” or “punishment” when one does not act to their expectations, this concept of heightened standards is called perfectionism (Frost et al., 1990;) (Gyori & Balazs, 2021).

Often  i have noticed a correlation between emotion repression and low self esteem alongside a sense of perfectionism (conjecture, 2024), additionally comes a link between self harming and shame, using it as a form of motivation (Schoenleber et al., 2014).

We can elaborate on this concept through the lines present in Library of Ruina and Lobotomy Corporation:

“Goodness, why are you making such a face? You're making others feel gloomy too. Please be more considerate, you don't live in this world alone after all.” 

The concept of deviation from societal norms being something that should be eliminated, the shame that the child may have felt for abstracting from the norm ; The posing of the child as “Selfish” or “inconsiderate” when they are the ones expected to change their ways for the others, leading to the belief that they are the ones required to change, that they are the ones who have done something wrong;

"Do I look a bit better now? I hope I do…"

The pressure and desire to conform to the ways of the society, the disregard for their own suffering in lieu of the community’s values;

"What the fuck do you want from me? To keep smiling like an idiot?!"

The frustration with the community’s wanton expectations, the repressed emotions coming to the surface, the resentment at the community at large.

well, after that comment you and melia exchange one short glance, before confessing to shulk just how exactly it came that you two started dating. and that story involves your confession to him…

it's quite an odd start to your relationship as a throuple, but with no more secrets between you three, you begin to date each other

you adjust to your relationship quite quickly. it barely takes any time at all for the three of you to feel completely comfortable around each other

there's no jealousy between the three of you! you all love each other and if anyone ever ends up feeling left out, they just bring it up and are quickly made the center of attention by the other two

the three of you always go on dates together, never just having two of you go and one staying left behind. the only exception to that unspoken rule is if any surprises need to be planned!

all three of you are very affectionate with each other. you sometimes like to joke that it's because you fantasized about being able to be this close for so long, that it just comes natural to all of you!

the people around you are very supportive of your relationship with each other! kallian and tyrea are the ones who are supportive of melia, while shulk has reyn and fiora who are rooting for him and the two of you!

I still can't understand why Melia would make End-of-Nights "spell"

You know, the cheat code that Renegade Mc used to delete characters?

Like, so far, the "headcanon" i have just make Melia appear as evil, or at least, selfish.

So you discovered that Karma is controling multiple worlds/dimenssions. The fate of everything lie in its judgement. If your world is considered to be bad, things will died. If your world is considred as good/perfect, Karma will let the world flow naturally again.

How do you know your world is considered to be good? Bad people will always exist, accidents happen all the times etc. How can you judge that???

Unless, you don't have to be the ultimate good...you just have to be better than the other candidates

So, this is my dumb theory, Melia did it for the sake of the world she is currently living in, by giving away the weapon to other renegade interceptors, so they can destroy other worlds. In the end, the world in which Paragon Mc and Melia are reside in ends up being the "perfect" one.

Hilda is an anthro badger who loves knowledge and the old web. High insomnia post but I’ve been in survival mode since 2020, and I knew that. But like I wasn’t aware of what exactly that meant. It’s about being hypervigilant and unable to just exist as I naturally want to so like. I’ve been into Xenoblade again bc I’m finally playing it on a screen bigger than a 3ds/portable mode switch and I’m in love with the detail and care that went into redoing the environments and polishing the enemy models. The menu is amazing for quality of life even if the layout is a little lacking in comparison to the Wii/3ds versions of the game. They did whitewash like everyone (even Shulk is paler lmao. Tho imo this fits bc he’s literally called pale in the beginning of the game. He should be lighter than fiora). And they butchered my fictional husband (and continue to do so). But like idk!!!! Bionis pulsates inside now, and looks slimy. Telethia look slimy!!!!! You can see the stichwork on Melias dress. Shulks hair moves in cutscenes. They all emote more in cutscenes, Reyn has such an adorable squint and smile face he makes at Sharla and Shulk. The separate cosmetic equip menu means that I can dress everyone according to how I remember feel they would be dressed in different areas and story events. Characters like juju whose voice acting is a little weird are more believable now because they can emote. Colony 6 rebuild info can be accessed anywhere? Collecting stuff outside of colony 6 rebuild and collectopedia (so like for quests) can be done by looking at the map instead of running aimlessly. You can access alllllll the item trading info from anywhere! I lost track of this post by being too autistic but like. I should let myself be a huge kinny again. I’ve wanted to for a while but I got caught up in negative associations and bad friendships I got in by being too open but like fuck it? I want to be peoples Shulk mutual again
