Can you imagine all these people who worked so hard to present Harry as a cheeky, fun-loving royal prince who appeared to be a "legit" Army pilot-- now have to see the real Harry act like an ass in public? All their hard work went right down the drain once that ginger idiot Megxited. I feel sorry for those palace aides. They really had a thankless job and will have a thankless job again if they are asked to rehab Harry's reputation for the 2nd time if he moves back to the UK.

I feel sorry for them in one way, because of all the wasted effort, but then I think well, it was their job and they were paid for it and they did it well at the time, so maybe my sympathy is misplaced.

The biggest tell in that is Edward Lane Fox being asked if he would come back and work with Harry again and him giving the polite equivalent of "Hell No". To me, that indicates both how far Harry is from redemption and how impossible he was to work with.

I don't envy the people who will eventually have to rehabilitate Harry when he returns to the BRF. They have next to nothing to work with and Harry will expect to be elevated back to Hero Harry in the blink of an eye (imo), a task that is impossible (also imo).

The long game, BRF edition Sinners, it just struck me that it is now 4 years since Megxit. But if we look at it closely, the last year in particular has been a disaster for the Grifters. No new contracts (except Lemonada, lol), endless attempts at rebranding, countless manifestations of film roles, Madam directing, all kinds of lofty plans.But what have we seen in reality? Madam merching whatever she can get her claws on, Harry doing Rent-A-Royal gigs, Madam paying for speaking and so on.Both Grifters are trying desperatly to cling to the BRF. But really, since the Coronation Harry has had 12 minutes with the king. Madam tries manifesting all kinds of calls, correspondance, invitations etc, but it is all gaslighting. So I posit that the longer the Grifters are away from real royalty the more they will sink into Kardashian fame. And imho the Grifters will never be near real royalty again. Their inevitable demise was just postponed a bit by the Jubilee, the funeral and the coronation. I’m kinda bored by the Sussexes. I used to get some entertainment out of them because they really surprised me time and time again how out of touch, delusional and entitled they are. But now nothing they do surprises me anymore. ...... It was horrible enough what they did to The Queen but then the interview with Oprah just after PP died and then HMTLQs death and how they again made it about them and then accidently on purpose exposing Kate and Charles as the "royal racist" its Al so incredibly viscious and for what? A merch cheque? I'll never understand why she went out of her way to break up and bully a family who did everything they could and more to make her feel welcome.

They're very unhinged and even though I can't stand him I feel sorry for Harry when she's finally done with him cos all kinds of accusations are gonna come out about him.

Meghan has to be one of the nastiest people I've ever read about and it's not even just with the RF but how she treats people behind the scenes ETC not to mention The sugars are a whole new level of low with where they take it I mean when you're wishing the deaths of CHILDREN so your cult leader can take over a monarchy you say is trash amayway then it's gone too far.

.....Royalty isn’t celebrity and it’s not really a brand..... being royal only really matters in the royal sphere it has no actual place in the real world and that's the harsh reality she's learning. Of cause people like when a new princess is crowned or a royal baby is born but actual day to day old people's home and plaque unveiling? No one gives a crap and they especially don't give a crap in a country where they don't even recognise noble titles. She was a novelty when she went to HW but the novelty has worn off and she has nothing to show for it, she didn't capitalise on "Megxit" at all and the only thing they've done is complain about their family like everyone doesnt have similar issues.

That was a big miscalculation on their part. They thought they would be “America royals” for hire visiting schools in Harlem and getting paid big bucks for inspirational speeches, but that’s not a job that exists in the US. It doesn’t translate.

That aquamarine ring...I think it's been confirmed that Meghan hasn't worn it since her wedding reception. Even then, some say that was a copy. I do not know where I saw it, but what she is wearing is not Diana's ring. This tracks with what we know about Meghan not being trusted with any jewelry or tiaras.

I will be a little controversial specially when the Montecito couple is irrelevant. But I think these kind of events like BAFTA, help the royals to boost their image as royals and make a contrast with the duo, because with the fashion from W&K (specially from W) in regular engagements, you can’t see any difference between W and H at Invictus and that only feed their delusions and their PR.

So, apart from the ridiculous statement about children’s holidays, I think the BRF is risking too much to not paint a good line between who are the real royals and who aren’t. So, the BRF weren’t effective managing the Sussexit, at least come and show a contrast between each other. More galas, glitzy events, more trips can do wonders, or if not, they are risking to become as irrelevant as the other two.

Do these events really help their image though? Or do we just like them? I think it's a very thin line. I'd take the Holocaust memorial any day before a literally Hollywood event, although I totally get what you mean.... Give me banquets and I won't moan about baftas.

The thing about people not realising who is a real royal and who isn't goes back to megxit. They let him keep IG and nevermind the Dukedom but the Prince title... They are literally royals whether we like it or not galavanting the world in a faux royal manner...... They are clowns but it is what it is, I don't think going to the BAFTAS is going to affect that. I honestly think they are as proactive as they can be differentiating themselves by just doing actual royal work (so if W&K did more if that it would be GREAT!)

Book reviews: Spare and Endgame

At the rate royal "bombshells" drop, one might imagine Buckingham Palace a smoking crater of charred ruins.

But after years of drama, not only do all the grand old piles in the British royal family’s vast portfolio of real estate still stand, but the royal machinery that sustains them isn’t even dinged. And that's because all the smoke and dazzle is part of a calculated strategy, a show cooked up in concert between "the Firm" and the tabloids that profit from royal clickbait. The gossipy headlines generate profit for the papers, sustain public interest in Britain's royal family, and provide a useful way to punish members who don't toe the institutional line.

Prince Harry's biography Spare became the fastest-selling nonfiction book of all time and generated countless media headlines. Omid Scobie's Endgame is currently providing chum for another tabloid feeding frenzy.

But ironically, both books are packed with stories the tabloids won't repeat, because they illuminate too much of the "invisible contract" between palace and press.

In probably the best coverage of Spare, Zeynep Tufekci wrote for the New York Times: "Any close follower of the British media should not have been surprised that after Prince Harry fell in love with Meghan Markle, the biracial American actress, years of vitriolic, even racist coverage followed. Whipping hatred and spreading lies — including on issues far more consequential than a royal romance — is a specialty of Britain’s atrocious but politically influential tabloids.

"People like me, uninterested in celebrities, shouldn’t dismiss the brouhaha around Harry’s memoir as mere celebrity tittle-tattle. He has made credible, even documented claims that his own family refused to stand up against their ugly, sustained attacks against Meghan. In other words, it appears that Britain’s most revered institution, funded by tens of millions in taxpayer funds annually, plays ball with one of its most revolting institutions.

"At the very least, it seems clear by now where some senior members of the royal family position themselves in all this."

Endgame goes even farther than Spare in detailing the often sordid workings of the invisible contract between journos and courtiers. Scobie details how Christian Jones, Prince William's communications secretary, fed negative stories about the Sussexes to Dan Wootton at The Sun in exchange for burying another story that might have been highly damaging to the heir: reports of private dinners and a "rural rivalry" that hinted at an affair between Prince William and Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley.

No proof or confirmation of that royal affair was ever provided, because after Jones' intervention, those stories were comprehensively scrubbed from The Sun's website. Instead, the paper was allowed to break the story of what it would call "Megxit": Harry and Meghan's desire to separate themselves from the Firm.

According to both Endgame and a report by the Byline Times, when Harry pursued legal action against The Sun, he was punished by the withdrawal of his official security. (It's worth noting that the disgraced Prince Andrew is still covered by taxpayer-funded security, despite having a much lower threat profile than Harry.) Scobie quotes a source as saying: "I have never seen the Palace circle the wagons like they did with Christian." Byline Times also quotes a source: "They threatened the removal of the funding to try and protect the royal household from a potential courtroom scandal with Jones and Wootton very publicly at the centre."

Why would the Firm pull out all the stops to protect a courtier, even if it meant putting the monarch's own second son in real and immediate danger?

Because Jones is merely a flunky for Prince William, and it's hard to imagine that Jones's press machinations were conducted without the approval of his "principal." Indeed, he wasn't William's only communications secretary to openly collude with the tabloids against Harry and Meghan: another highly placed aide, Jason Knauf, gave testimony on behalf of the Daily Mail in a case brought against it by the Duchess of Sussex, regarding the leak of a private letter. (Despite the attempted sabotage from William's camp, she won that case and was awarded a front page correction and a large settlement.)

The details of all this sordidness — the sacrifice of Harry and Meghan on the altar of tabloid drama, with obsidian knives wielded by Harry’s own closest kin in an attempt to secure more favorable coverage for themselves — forms the narrative backbone of both books. And William isn't the only one implicated in the matter: Queen Camilla emerges as a canny and ruthless operator, buying the rehabilitation of her own image with the coin of gossip leaked against both her stepsons.

"In a funny way I even wanted Camilla to be happy," Harry writes. "Maybe she'd be less dangerous if she was happy."

It's pretty hard to tell if anyone's happy in Britain's royal family. Endgame tells us that Charles is jealous of William, that William is jealous of Harry, and that Harry will probably never get any of the remorse he'd like to see for the way he and his wife were thrown to the wolves. Hating Harry — and even more so, Meghan — has become its own lucrative, self-sustaining industry. Literally hundreds of negative articles are published about the two every day. It's a relentless, often racist onslaught of character assassination that exploits the same culture-war fissions that drove Brexit.

Spare mostly comes off as a good-faith effort from a deeply weird person to explain to the rest of us why he's like this. Endgame isn't as well-written or compelling, but it backs up a lot of what Harry puts into generalizations with names, dates, and specifics. Together, they paint a very damning portrait of two rotten institutions propping each other up at the people's expense.

But by and large, you won't read about that in the press.

To be perfectly fair in the four years that have passed since Megxit he hasnt said a word or allowed a single attributed leak to defend her from the onslaught. I’m not saying that it would necessarily have been wise to put out statements and get in a war of words with the nutters but IMO he isnt exactly fighting the hoards for her. He came out with a full ass statement after the panorama investigation, and leaked that he would “like to put his arm around” H after the drama started, but he has done neither for K. He didnt say anything when she was dragged as a racist, he didnt say anything to spare her, the kids, Rose or himself the humiliating rumours about cheating - rumours that are now established narrative-, he didnt say anything about the abuse she’s been experiencing since January. Idk if keeping perfectly quiet and pretending not to notice counts as being protective. Not like with his mother; he took on the bbc and implicitly all the press over her. He invited H&M on that walkabout against all reason and to Kate’s clear unhappiness just to make lil bro feel included.

I’ll admit to being a bit bitter about his silence, and I do think they are a good loving couple who handle being royal the best way possible, but frankly I also think she does A LOT more for him than he does for her. I’m not saying he has to be anything like his nutjob brother, but this W is protective thing is starting to come across a bit like the W is a statesman line only with less concrete evidence- smthg they keep telling us but doesnt necessarily seem all that real. Kind of a self perpetuating myth, if you ask me.

what exactly is he supposed to do though? Statements won't do anything and pushing for a wave of PR only does more harm than good - as proven by H&M and Camilla. They are a private couple and airing their business is exactly what they don't do. Providing her the privacy she wants is Williams's role as her husband and that's what he is doing.

I’m the anon who wrote that your post resonated with my observation/intuition. I thought I would send in a lengthy list of things I think may be going on behind the scenes. These things may “fit” with your reading:

1) Harry has massively betrayed William and Catherine. From the Oprah interview to the accusation of physical assault in his book to gossip/lies planted in the press, he has inflicted enormous pain on them and William has actually lost his brother. In addition to losing his mother in tragic circumstances, over the last few years he has grieved two grandparents and his brother.

2) Years ago, Charles wanted to find a solution to appease the Megxit half-in/half-out demands. William and the Queen were in agreement this was not viable and chose to preserve the monarchy over Harry’s feelings. Charles wants Harry back. He has very little to no real concern for William and Catherine. It’s only about him and what he envisioned his reign would look like. I also agree with another anon that there is a triangulation layer to this.

3) Action to neutralize the threat that is Harry was postponed while the Queen was ill and grieving. It was William’s expectation that action would be taken after her death. Instead, Charles has flipped the script and wants to reverse the Megxit decision.

4) Neutralizing Harry would involve releasing dirt from Harry’s past that would end him. Charles will not do it because he covered the dirt at the time, so his reputation would also suffer badly. William wants it all out. Charles wants to keep it all hidden. It troubles William because he doesn’t want to go along with further cover ups. He feels it threatens the monarchy and his reputation as well. This is out of his control, and it causes him stress.

5) Planning for the coronation brought many huge disagreements, with Charles using demands, guilt, and manipulation in private and in the press to try forcing William into agreement on Harry’s full involvement. There was a compromise, but Charles was not satisfied.

6) William accepts Charles making Camilla queen but he doesn’t like it. The whole situation is sordid, and he has had to go along with things he felt compromised his mother’s legacy. Don’t underestimate Camilla and her intentions.

7) Charles invited William to Birkhall to dine with him the night after the Queen’s death. He told him there he would be making him Prince of Wales immediately. This was intended as a “gift,” even though it benefitted Charles and withholding it would have been ludicrous. The gift had strings attached. He expected William to go along with him in all his plans and priorities. So whenever William resists, he can think or say “What more could you want? You’re ungrateful. I’ve given you everything!” That is not true, as he hasn’t given loyalty or support, but it’s how Charles sees things.

8) Those plans and priorities include increasing the popularity and public adoration of King Charles and Queen Camilla, and the expectation is that the Waleses will use their public image to aid in this effort. Charles wants them to join themselves to him publicly. He wants continual endorsement from William (the coronation oath wasn’t enough for him) as well as “happy family” PR. But Charles has a lot of skeletons in his closet and William is wise to keep their public images separate.

9) Aside from the expectation that William will aid Charles and Camilla’s PR, there’s also the expectation that he will support and help in bringing Harry back. What you said about Travalyst and Earthshot is unfortunately plausible. I also believe that Charles feels the Duchy of Cornwall offers enough funding for William to share with Harry. He supports his siblings with the Duchy of Lancaster and wants William to support Harry financially. William will not, for many reasons.

10) Charles is not happy about handing over the Duchy of Cornwall to William. He feels personally offended with every decision William makes that isn’t exactly as he did things.

11) There are some very messy courtiers in Charles’s household.

That’s about it. I’m sorry for the length. Charles is focused on his and Camilla’s popularity and legacy as well as his “darling boy” Harry’s return. There are currently enormous threats to the monarchy, and they concern and stress William very much, but Charles’s personal feelings, desires and ideals trump everything. “I am KING!”

Only time will tell if the monarchy survives this.

Thank you for coming back and explaining all your thoughts. I agree with a lot of them. Harry has betrayed his family, Charles was appeasing them for quite some time (I'm not sure of the current state of affairs), the BRF has been effective in greyrocking Harry but have been reluctant to release dirt on him or on Meghan, Charles does seem to be focused on increasing his and Camilla's popularity, and he does seem to expect William to not only welcome Harry back but to support Harry and his family financially, etc and so on.

I think that the monarchy will survive this, if only because the alternative is so involved and a lot of work, but I do wonder what sort of reputation it will have by the time the crown is passed on to William. I think he will have to do a lot of work on repairing things before he can start to build his legacy as King, so I expect his reign to have a slow and rocky start, simply because of how it will be left by King Charles III. I hope I am wrong, but I just can't see King Charles passing on the feelings of respect and affection for the crown that he inherited from his mother, the late Queen. I don't see him as having her sense of duty, and it was her sense of duty that enabled the crown to be held in such solid respect and affection when she passed.

God I hope everyone is correct about the divorce being imminent. She really thinks she did something because of those useless titles she finally got for her phantom children nobody cares about. How does she not see they are even more insignificant than Beatrice and Eugenie, who are blood princesses that no one has ever cared about or paid attention to?
