Arrrgh, my current Mentalist obsession led to me looking something up and stumbling on other crime shows of the era, including Body of Proof, which I watched at the time. It made me annoyed all over again at how the people behind that show took a fantastic cast and a pretty interesting set of characters and wasted--nay, outright squandered--them on relentless drivel.
They had a cast that was half female. Two of the female characters comprised most of the power and intelligence of the cast. And they were both over 40! This never happens on TV! And then they made these two characters fight with each other over one of them dating the other's ex-husband. For many, many episodes. Why would you do that when you have such an amazing setup for original, interesting stories?!
(Also, now that I have seen Dana Delany in China Beach, I'm even more annoyed at how utterly wasted she was here.)
I almost never hate-watch, but I hate-watched that for a season and a half before I had to give up. I have a soft spot for blunt, direct female characters who do an end-run around normal human interaction. And it had so much potential.
Since it's up for free online, I rewatched an episode just to see if it was as bad as I remember, and it was. But their medical consultant was very good. The science was the most believable part.
...uh, why do I have fic ideas swirling in my brain now?
(If I were to write something, which I absolutely will not, I think it would involve more of Megan teaching Peter medical stuff in that off-handed way she had. I mean, of course I shipped them, what do you take me for, but those were some of the loveliest little moments of the show.)

Parsley Days (Andrea Dorfman, 2000)
Sometimes you watch these turn-of-the-century super low-budget indie films and you strike gold (Funny Ha Ha, for instance). Sometimes they’re terrible. This one is just fine, but not great.
SPOILERS
It’s the story of Kate who discovers she’s pregnant around the same time that she’s realizing she’s no longer in love with her boyfriend, Ollie. They’re in their early 20s and have been together since high school. He’s still totally happy in the relationship but it is dawning on her that she wants out. But he’s the nicest guy in the world (actually he’s not - more on that below) and they don’t have any obvious problems. It’s called Parsley Days because one of Kate’s friends is an herbalist/botany enthusiast and says that consuming huge amounts of parsley can induce menstruation and/or miscarriage. Which would be easier than having an abortion - and also creates a really nice visual motif throughout the film. This movie is great because at no point does it present abortion as a bad or controversial choice and there aren’t any scenes of her being troubled or conflicted about it. She doesn’t want to be pregnant and she takes the appropriate steps to end the pregnancy.
The one thing that IS troubling about this film is that we find out at the end that Ollie had poked a hole in a condom with the intention of getting her pregnant. He did so because he could feel her pulling away from the relationship and thought that would keep them together (by permanently linking them). Her reaction to learning this is subdued, but her plans to end the pregnancy and the relationship don’t change. It isn’t necessarily unrealistic or dishonest from a storytelling point-of-view that she isn’t more angry or that he doesn’t experience more fallout for committing what is totally sexual assault. Everybody processes trauma differently. But it feels unsatisfying and wrong to end the film the way it ends with them on good, warm terms.
END SPOILERS
Despite this questionable narrative choice, it’s still a very enjoyable film. It’s cute (across the board) and it’s a real glimpse into life in fucking Nova Scotia in 2000, which is sooo rad. It’s a valuable time-capsule both as a portrayal of a corner of the world in a time that is gone and also in how that portrayal was made. Does that make sense? What it shows is lovely to see, because even though the world has moved on, we’ve got this sweet little picture. But also, the equipment available at that time to take that picture, and the cinematic language and style of that time are also wrapped up in how that picture was taken. This film is full of the idiosyncrasies of Andrea Dorfman and of the film art values of the year 2000. In contrast, there is so much incredible and exciting independent cinema happening right now in part because the equipment needed to make it is so inexpensive and accessible. But realizing how hard it was to make a movie even just 15 or 20 years ago really deepens my appreciation for the drive, ingenuity, and economy that pre-digital or proto-digital indie filmmakers had.

ok, so it feels like they just shot all episodes of Body of Proof and then randomly set them together.
First Lacey feeling smothered, than the next episode everythings perfectly fine and she loves all the attention (anddecision making) Megan is doing, and then Lacey is complaining again.
Second we have the whole relationship drama with Todd, Kate and Megan. Megan is pissed at Kate for like half a season, then they talk and laugh about it in one episode and are bffs and in the next epispode Megan is back to beeing a bitch to Kate. It makes no fucking sense.
And then there is the thing I'm most baffled about. What happened at the last three episodes of season 2 and the first two episodes of season3?!
Did the writers realise that nothing major has happened to their main characters yet and were trying to make up for it?
First the two-part episode with the virus, Dani dying in the first 3 minutes and Kate beeing on the verge of dying for like 50 minutes. Then the next epispode Megan gets threatened, "kidnapped" and assaulted by a serial killer and Peter just casually dies at the end. AND don't let me start on it beeing an open end episode and the apruptness of the ending.
And then they continue season 3 with another two-part episode in which first Lacey gets kidnapped and then Megan? Sam and Bud are gone and suddenly there's Tommy? Peter gets a honorable mention and that's it? I hate it, what the hell did the writers think?
Oh and let's not forget all the forgotten plot lines. Megans dates/boyfriends? Todd never mentioned again? What's Joan doing now, after she lost her job?
There's probably so much more, but I've binge watched Body of Proof for the last two days and my brian doesn't work anymore.

Murder Hunt
Body of Proof (2011-13) created by Christopher Murphey Body of Proof has just been added to the streaming platform Disney+ – for the Star channel – and I thought a rewatch was in order. A rewatch and a first time watch of the complete third season since I gave up on that season after the two-part season opener. Past-me was way smarter than present-me as the third season turned out just the way I…

There is something incredibly relaxing about putting something together with Fuchsia Dunlop and Ezra Klein and Megan McArdle and Mark Miller and graduate student Eva Summer (presumably from George Mason, since this is a Mercatus Center feature) talking about Chinese gastronomy and culture and so forth that I wish I could feel more often and do it professionally.

Anne with an E: Season 2 (spoilers)
Just finished watching it tonight and despite a rocky start I loved it.  Spoilers beneath the cut.
Many, many thoughts ...
Fan Fiction rather than canon
First of all, this retelling of Anne of Green Gables is official fan fiction.  It isn’t canon, and I’m totally fine with that.  I’m comfortable with the characters being borrowed from LM Montgomery’s universe and used to tell different stories and deliver different messages.  So you’ll never find me being annoyed about things deviating from canon.
That being said, episode 1 made me deeply anxious at the Marilla-Nate dynamic and had to stop watching for a little bit.  I didn’t want to believe that they were going to go there ... and have Marilla be so susceptible and vulnerable.
Nate was such a smarmy bastard and I couldn’t believe that Marilla would be attracted to him - particularly as she’s clearly been emptying out his gross chamber pot on a daily basis!! :D  Dunlop was quite an interesting character to me - he clearly enjoyed and was good at baking, wanted to belong and had a slightly different motivation and attitude to Nathanial - but was still a Bad Man.
Marilla, Matthew and Mrs Lynde
I think they remain very true to their book counterparts.  Sure, the series explores more of their back stories and in fact creates new back stories and textures for them - but these all felt very believable and authentic to me, so I was happy with that.
Mrs Lynde is borderline.  There were moments when she was very true to the books, but there were moments towards the latter part of the season where her manner towards Miss Stacey was just spiteful and malevolent with no particular reason.
Anne
Anne remains a complex character.  Amybeth McNulty is amazing and portrays her so beautifully but McNulty’s Anne is just so different and almost jarringly strange compared to Megan Follows’ portrayal that even though I’ve told myself that these are completely different ‘universes’, I still feel a little odd sometimes.  McNulty’s Anne is so damaged.  I don’t mind the gritty reality and pain of her portrayal of Anne as if she’s borderline traumatised and clearly suffering from PTSD.
I think I’m more frustrated with Anne when she’s selfish, bratty, rude, talking over the top of others.  The way she treats her devoted Diana is one example of it.  Often she doesn’t seem to care about Diana at all - Diana is so loyal and loving and yet Anne’s so oblivious to her.
It’s not McNulty’s fault - the writers have moments like the scene at Aunt Josephine’s party where an artist is imparting some words of wisdom to Cole and Anne kind of bursts in with a torrent of words all about herself and her views on it - when that moment is actually supposed to be Cole’s.  We see the world through Anne’s eyes so I get why they did that, but it actually just made her look selfish.  She did it in episode 9 when Gilbert’s trying to engage with and talk to Miss Stacey and Anne’s interrupting constantly.  I think the different in that episode is that they are deliberately trying to make Anne look selfish and self-absorbed... but not sure I’m entirely happy that characterisation.  Anne has many faults but I didn’t think selfishness was one of them.  Similarly in the scene when she bursts into their little cottage in the woods and is in a fury and a rage about how badly she looked in front of Miss Stacey - she doesn’t give Cole a chance to get a word in edgewise.  She comes across as bratty and unlikeable.
Sometimes she also comes across as a bit stupid sometimes.  Anne’s supposed to be impetuous, prone to scrapes and misfortune but this Anne is almost dumb sometimes - spinning around and tearing a veil, knocking her candle onto the ground and starting a fire that burns her essay ... That is pushing the limits of ‘unlucky’ Anne a little far.
Nonetheless, McNulty is amazing and still manages to make the character lovable despite her very severe shortcomings and flaws.
Gilbert Blythe
He remains incredibly true to my image of Gilbert - whether the book version or the Jonathan Crombie version.
Tumblr media
His adoration of Anne is constant and beautiful and I really liked the way they explored his character, sent him off to faraway lands  - something entirely consistent with his intelligent and inquiring mind.  I continue to ship Anne and Gilbert madly - I’m so glad this show hasn’t changed that.
Other observations
Modern sensibilities.  Yes, some of the messages were blatant and unsubtle. But I’m ok with them.  I thought it was interesting to explore diversity and inclusivity in Avonlea.  Aunt Josephine (and her Gertrude), Bash, Cole and others were effective ways to consider these issues.
Jerry Buote.  I have to say I love Jerry in the series.  A tiny character in the books, he’s been fleshed out, given his own storyline, dialogue and personality. I really like him.
Mr Phillips.  I’ve never liked Mr Phillips in any of the variations of the story but I’m really not that happy with them making him a closeted homosexual.  Combined with his inappropriate and almost predatory relationship(s) with his students, that is almost reinforcing an unfortunate stereotype about homosexuality that makes me feel uncomfortable.
Miss Stacey.  I really liked her character, the actress who played her and her storyline. I did not like the way they had Anne behave around her, though.  That was just horribly embarrassing and inconsistent with my idea of Anne.
Billy Andrews: So glad that they had a tiny redemption for him at the end in the form of the fox.  Until then he was terrifyingly psychotic.
I loved the many shippy moments.  Blowing out the last candle at Christmas ...
Tumblr media
Gilbert waiting outside the freight train:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since they didn’t have Gilbert rescuing Anne as Elaine in a rowbat, it was almost the next best thing.... having him waiting outside the carriage with an amused, faintly quizzical expression on his face.
I liked their newfound accord at the end of season 2 when Anne admits that she’s behaved poorly towards him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can’t wait until season 3 ... The characters continue to be interesting and delightful and I can’t wait to see what happens next.  Mary’s son seems extremely dodgy and suspicious to me.
Will they have Diana tread her canonic path of domesticity with Fred (who is very good) or will they allow her to take flight and do something different?
Is Ruby still doomed, or will they let her live - like Matthew?
Which elements of the books will be incorporated and which ones will be ditched?
I can’t wait.

8. Daniel Jackson (SG1)
9. Peter Dunlop (Body of Proof)
10. Tom Chandler (The Last Ship)
OMG THAT WAS SO HARD!!! Especially, the movies because there are just so many. I tried to just go with ones that I’ve seen over the last ten years and not include my childhood favorites. Haha! TV shows was definitely difficult also as for the last few years it’s been mostly SciFi, but I really do watch SO many others! As for actors...I’m probably missing someone, or a few someones. I’m lucky that I’ve met the top three people on this list!
So anyways...I’m bored and this is what I do when I’m bored. You should try to make your own list, too. See how hard it is when you have to actually write it down! I was going to do music/artists also, but that’s impossible as my favorites change based on my mood.
Have fun! And feel free to judge me...LOL!
