like ummmmm. one thought that im having. and this is specifically the way i read books about magic. but i am not imagining this as a great struggle between christiandom/romanization and 'old britain'/the green man/enchantment. but the CHARACTERS. at least some of them. are. and i think those are the characters who are most often drawn to the magic, whose lives have been shaped by it, but who have been taught and told that true virtue lies in God and The New World. collum, bedivere, arthur - all a bit out of place by being so determinedly christian despite how easily they fit into, and function within, the world of gods now so faint that in our own era people can pretty much make up whatever they want about them and there's nothing to disprove it
#we know so little about how pre-christian britain ireland wales cornwall ACTUALLY worshiped. like we have glimpses#but it's very vague because rome and then christian rome was so thorough in their assimilation#modern pagans who focus on those areas are working off of the golden dawn and gardner and a dozen other twentieth-century concepts#some of it is based on slivers of actual archeological research. but most of it is just vibes#was that how worship was conducted? back before jesus came across the channel? was it just as loosely formed?#was 'religion' as a modern western person knows it essentially invented by the romans and later the christian romans?#was the structure a classical mediterrenean thing that other nearby regions of the time didn't adhere to?#when you prayed. did you clasp your hands and ask or give thanks? or did you just think Something Has Worked Here#and feel encountered with?#and . because these tags are wildly digressing. what does lev grossman think they thought?#the bright sword

media list (22.01.2024 - 28.01.2024)
👂 Listened:
Albums:
Some Nights by fun. (2012) [7.5/10, this album was super fun with a cohesive sound that didn't become flat or boring in the way that A.M by Arctic Monkeys did for me.]
Dreamland by Glass Animals (2020) [9/10, this album was SO GOOD I absolutely didn't expect that. I've re-listened to it multiple times since that first time.]
My Head Is An Animal by Of Monsters and Men [9/10, a really great whimsical album.]
Cleopatra by The Lumineers (2016) [7/10, this was also a really good one, and I feel like if I'd listened to it any other week it would've had his praises sung but this week has just been a good album week in general so it didn't stand out as much.]
Podcasts:
Morbid [this week was all about multi-parters - I will say while The Burger Chef murders and H.H. Holmes really stuck with me, at this point if I hadn't written down Walter Freeman I would have no memory of what that was all about now, even though when I was listening to it it was THE MOST intriguing and totally a more interesting delve, just because it's not technically true crime and instead deals with lobotomies and its consequences. Very tragic.] Episodes: ⤷ EP 487-488: Walter Freeman Pt. 1-2 ⤷ EP 457-461: H.H. Holmes Pt. 1-5 ⤷ EP 441-442: The Burger Chef Murders Pt. 1-2
Tooth & Claw [getting bitten by a Brazilian Wandering Spider can kill you and more importantly give you an erection that lasts for days. Important knowledge to have.] Episodes: ⤷ Brazilian Wandering Spider Bite - Die Hard ⤷ Wolverine Attack - Blood in the Snow
📖 Read:
Articles:
The Dangerous Few: Taking Seriously Prison Abolition and Its Skeptics by Thomas Ward Frampton from Harvard Law Review [a really interesting read, I found this one a lot more in-depth than the article from Angel Parker that I read last week, though it uses similar talking points - especially towards the end. I will say that once again this really doesn't answer the question of what an alternative is to incarceration for 'the dangerous few', but it does make a very strong argument (for me, at least) as to why working towards decarceration is important work even without having all the answers.]
Spain isn't bowing to the right of the far-right in the EU? Why? by Laura Llach from Euro News [I don't know why I ended up here, but this in partnership with the article below this was an interesting read about Spain's history with regards to feminism and LGBTQIA+ rights, and how that's looking in today's world.]
How Spain Went Woke - And Why That May Not Last by Aitor Hernandez-Morales from Politico
Books:
Luck In The Shadows by Lynn Flewelling [in progress, I need to prioritise books the next few weeks or I won't be reaching my reading goal - wish me luck on not having this book be here next week.]
#this was a short week it looks like but that article abt prison abolition was 40 pages thats like reading 10 articles tbh#dont ask me how i ended up reading abt spanish politics#i was just searching up why they lived so long#mediterrenean diet and sun apparently#and then i was like are they nice to their gays#yes they are#æ

He should be, according to all laws of physics, a perfect sphere of 100% pure animal fat. The human doesnt care anyway, because some people are wAY fatter than they should be considering all movement and sedentariety in their life (me) and others can lift cars and eat McDonalds 7 times a day as as long as they lift their entire body weight ONCE in the day they will never gain one more gram of non-natural fat (whoever tf is this guy)

#look i get it. im a lazy piece of shit whos only excercise during the day is Using Their Brain or Helping Around The House#H O W E V E R#woth my 20+ minutes of walking TO the school and 20+ back#back more humid than the fucking mediterrenean because Mare Nostrum or some shit idk backpack heavy#you would think that doing that a MINIMUM of 5 days a week should be ok#then theres also eating#another bullshit part of being a human- some foods taste good. but eating only those is basically Committing Bullet Breakfast because yeah#on that note: we should be GRATEFUL that science allows for healthy food to NOT taste like shit#seriously burgers made of plant that DONT want to be “Meat 2” taste kinda based (spinach miniburgers my beloveds)#but yeah you have to do a VERY SPECOFIC DIET or you might as well make a reddit account and start playing league#i feel the “all my pain was caused by Deficency Of Easily Accessible Vitamin and once i got the virami i became perfect” post every day#and every day it goes deeper

I think the reason I don't like psychologizing or neurologizing DW is that. Well. There's literally no way in hell for the main premise to fit into "healthy" human behaviour? Like, sure, go ahead, Odysseus hated his wife and country and that's why he cursed himself to travel for 10 years across the Mediterrenean Sea (a less than a year long trip in a rowboat). Kudos on your hot take. Now read through all the articles ever written on the meaning of Scylla and Charybdis.
Like, calling the Doctor's (or the Master's) various traumas just doesn't seem to go anywhere for me? And, just. This is a show where there is no endgame. Yes, each episode and season have one, but if you want the Doctor to stop running (also. please. for the love of Calliope. there's a difference between running as in fleeing and running as in running. this is the character that nearly got themself killed because when confronted with a brand new incomprehensible entity they decided to have a chat with it instead of cowering in the other corner and waiting for rescue like everyone else), then you basically just want the show to end? If you want the Master to complete a redemption or healing arc, you basically want to nullify the character? Oh, but they'll still be campy and fun in the background, so the fuck what? That's thinking aesthetics are the essence, you still want the end of history.
Fifteen IS acting way more "healthier" than the Doctor ever had in NuWho. I've already seen a criticism of "uh he's not autism coded...", and there's literally been the period when they just stayed calmly home, which is, like. where all stories lead if you don't kill off the protagonist, AND HOW THE VAST MAJORITY OF HUMANS WITH ACTUAL PROBLEMS LIVE, that's the whole point of Fourteen? And, low blow, but maybe, just maybe, Ncuti Gatwa knows more about living with a gencoide trauma than USamerican psychology graduates?
Idk, idk, please tell me what I'm getting wrong. I'm serious when I say I want to be criticised and have the holes in my logic pointed out.
#tw: negativity#look it's just mildly annoying when you leave a stunning adaptation of st. John's apocalypse and want to talk about the choices#but everyone's figuring out how the Apocalypse wants them to assassinate Napoleon?#tw: genocide mention#i hate how this show always wires me up but I can't think anything coherent until i vent out#dw spoilers#dw meta#the doctor#the master

Thanks to one reblog I made, I was thinking about Astrid Lindgren, and Hilda, and generally Scandinavian children media (and Moomins!) and how they all have a similar vibe of: forests, chill but not cold (personality-wise too), self-reliant kids that nonetheless have a good relationship with their parent or parents, even if they wander aroound and sometimes see those parents once a few days…
And I thought: those are the Sindar! They are just like that!
And now I imagine Doriath with IKEA furniture all that Scandinavian vibe.
And the Noldor are more Mediterrenean in personality (I imagine): close-knot families, impulsiveness, passion, a lot of gesturing when they speak, a beautiful language with a lot of grammar…
Yes, this is my new HC. Not necessarily extending to clothing styles and architecture, and cuisine, but. But. Feanorian pizza. Just think of it. And Feanor fighting Fingolfin about which pasta goes with what sauce.
Also, I may have finally found a way to get more emotionally invested into the Sindar. Which would be good, as I like being invested in characters even if they murder each other.
(My apologies to all the Scandinavians, Italians and other people from the Mediterrenean area for stereotyping you. I am Polish, feel free to stereotype me back ;) )

Yes, hello, as a Spanish cousin (mediterrenean supremacy, hell yeah!) I have to say that I suffered Kaos as much as you did. We remember the old gods here and I felt like reaping my hair for 99% of the show 🥲🥲🥲
Sorry you had to experience this, we know this pain all too well 🥲
Uuuugh can the Anglophones just leave us alone 😭 They claim we don't care about our old gods and our heritage but when we call them out on their bs - because we actually care! Surprise! - they call us overdramatic and naïve because we cannot possibly grasp their grand ideas 🤦♀️
