Good News - July 22-28

1. Four new cheetah cubs born in Saudi Arabia after 40 years of extinction
â[T]he discovery of mummified cheetahs in caves [âŠ] which ranged in age from 4,000 to as recent as 120 years, proved that the animals [âŠ] once called [Saudi Arabia] home. The realisation kick-started the countryâs Cheetah Conservation Program to bring back the cats to their historic Arabian range. [âŠ] Dr Mohammed Qurban, CEO of the NCW, said: [âŠ] âThis motivates us to continue our efforts to restore and reintroduce cheetahs, guided by an integrated strategy designed in accordance with best international practices.ââ
2. In sub-Saharan Africa, âforgottenâ foods could boost climate resilience, nutrition
â[A study published in PNAS] examined âforgottenâ crops that may help make sub-Saharan food systems more resilient, and more nutritious, as climate change makes it harder to grow [current staple crops.] [⊠The study identified 138 indigenous] food crops that were ârelatively underresearched, underutilized, or underpromoted in an African context,â but which have the nutrient content and growing stability to support healthy diets and local economies in the region. [âŠ] In Eswatini, van Zonneveld and the World Vegetable Center are working with schools to introduce hardy, underutilized vegetables to their gardens, which have typically only grown beans and maize.â
3. Here's how $4 billion in government money is being spent to reduce climate pollution
â[New Orleans was awarded] nearly $50 million to help pay for installing solar on low to middle income homes [⊠and] plans to green up underserved areas with trees and build out its lackluster bike lane system to provide an alternative to cars. [âŠ] In Utah, $75 million will fund several measures from expanding electric vehicles to reducing methane emissions from oil and gas production. [⊠A] coalition of states led by North Carolina will look to store carbon in lands used for agriculture as well as natural places like wetlands, with more than $400 million. [⊠This funding is] âproviding investments in communities, new jobs, cost savings for everyday Americans, improved air quality, ⊠better health outcomes.ââ
4. From doom scrolling to hope scrolling: this weekâs big Democratic vibe shift
â[Democrats] have been on an emotional rollercoaster for the past few weeks: from grim determination as Biden fought to hang on to his push for a second term, to outright exuberance after he stepped aside and Harris launched her campaign. [âŠ] In less than a week, the Harris campaign raised record-breaking sums and signed up more than 100,000 new volunteers[âŠ.] This honeymoon phase will end, said Democratic strategist Guy Cecil, warning the election will be a close race, despite this newfound exuberance in his party. [⊠But v]oters are saying they are excited to vote for Harris and not just against Trump. Thatâs new.â
5. Biodegradable luminescent polymers show promise for reducing electronic waste
â[A team of scientists discovered that a certain] chemical enables the recycling of [luminescent polymers] while maintaining high light-emitting functions. [âŠ] At the end of life, this new polymer can be degraded under either mild acidic conditions (near the pH of stomach acid) or relatively low heat treatment (> 410 F). The resulting materials can be isolated and remade into new materials for future applications. [âŠ] The researchers predict this new polymer can be applied to existing technologies, such as displays and medical imaging, and enable new applications [âŠ] such as cell phones and computer screens with continued testing.â
6. Worldâs Biggest Dam Removal Project to Open 420 Miles of Salmon Habitat this Fall
âReconnecting the river will help salmon and steelhead populations survive a warming climate and [natural disastersâŠ.] In the long term, dam removal will significantly improve water quality in the Klamath. âAlgae problems in the reservoirs behind the dams were so bad that the water was dangerous for contact [âŠ] and not drinkable,â says Fluvial Geomorphologist Brian Cluer. [⊠The project] will begin to reverse decades of habitat degradation, allow threatened salmon species to be resilient in the face of climate change, and restore tribal connections to their traditional food source.â
7. Biden-Harris Administration Awards $45.1 Million to Expand Mental Health and Substance Use Services Across the Lifespan
ââBe it fostering wellness in young people, caring for the unhoused, facilitating treatment and more, this funding directly supports the needs of our neighbors,â said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. [The funding also supports] recovery and reentry services to adults in the criminal justice system who have a substance use disorder[⊠and clinics which] serve anyone who asks for help for mental health or substance use, regardless of their ability to pay.â
8. The Worldâs Rarest Crow Will Soon Fly Free on Maui
â[⊠In] the latest attempt to establish a wild crow population, biologists will investigate if this species can thrive on Maui, an island where it may have never lived before. Translocations outside of a speciesâ known historical range are rare in conservation work, but for a bird on the brink of extinction, itâs a necessary experiment: Scientists believe the crows will be safer from predators in a new localeâa main reason that past reintroduction attempts failed. [âŠ] As the release date approaches, the crows have already undergone extensive preparation for life in the wild. [âŠ] âWe try to give them the respect that you would give if you were caring for someoneâs elder.ââ
9. An optimistâs guide to the EV battery mining challenge
ââBattery minerals have a tremendous benefit over oil, and thatâs that you can reuse them.â [⊠T]he reportâs authors found thereâs evidence to suggest that [improvements in technology] and recycling have already helped limit demand for battery minerals in spite of this rapid growth â and that further improvements can reduce it even more. [⊠They] envision a scenario in which new mining for battery materials can basically stop by 2050, as battery recycling meets demand. In this fully realized circular battery economy, the world must extract a total of 125 million tons of battery minerals â a sum that, while hefty, is actually 17 times smaller than the oil currently harvested every year to fuel road transport.â
10. Peekaboo! A baby tree kangaroo debuts at the Bronx Zoo
âThe tiny Matschieâs tree kangaroo [âŠ] was the third of its kind born at the Bronx Zoo since 2008. [⊠A] Bronx Zoo spokesperson said that the kangaroo's birth was significant for the network of zoos that aims to preserve genetic diversity among endangered animals. "It's a small population and because of that births are not very common," said Jessica Moody, curator of primates and small mammals at the Bronx Zoo[, âŠ] adding that baby tree kangaroos are âpossibly one of the cutest animals to have ever lived. They look like stuffed animals, it's amazing.ââ

TWTHH Spinoff: Written in the Stars [1]
Pairing: military strategist!Mingi x royal physician!reader
AU: historical au (Joseon era)
Word Count: 5.5k
Summary: Mingi had spent countless years searching for the angel who saved his life when he was on the verge of death. He believed god was on his side when she finally reappeared before him, but she was now so near yet so far, so unobtainable. No longer just a young medical trainee, she had become an esteemed royal physicianâa woman working within the palace walls. And what did that mean? It meant she now belonged to His Majesty.
A/N: As stated in the title, this is a spinoff. If you have yet to check out the main story, it's probably better to read that before starting this.
Main Story | Spinoff Masterlist | Part 2
"Hey, hey, hey, look at me. Just focus on me, okay? You can hear me, right?" a sweet, gentle female voice called out, followed by a soft touch on his cheek. Mingi forced his eyes open in disbeliefâhow could a woman be in the war zone? As he cracked his eyes open, he was breathless at the sight of a beautiful angel before him.
You smiled in relief, cupping his face delicately. "That's right. Everything will be okay. I'll make all the pain go away. Just stay with me, soldier. Can you do that?"
He nodded weakly, his once weakening heartbeat now pounding in his chest. "A-anything for you, my ladyâŠ"
"Quite a flirt, aren't you?" you teased, reassured that he was still well enough to be playful. He was the most critical soldier on site, and you had been immediately assigned to him as soon as you and a team of medical experts arrived to treat the injured soldiers.
Your breath had hitched when you first saw him, your heart nearly stopping at the sight of the blood caking his body, a huge gash on his abdomen, and countless other cuts. Without wasting a second, you settled beside him and did everything you could to keep him conscious. He was losing too much blood, and if he remained unconscious any longer, you might lose him. For now, you had no choice but to multitask by treating him and keeping him distracted.
Anything to keep him awake.
"N-no, only for youâŠ" he croaked, and you breathed out a laugh, your hands busy cleaning his wounds, unfazed by his bare upper body. Sure, he had a great physique, but so did most soldiers around here and many other patients you'd treated. His clichĂ©d and sweet words were also nothing new to you. Patients delirious from blood loss often behaved this way.
He held onto your hand when the stinging pain became a little too unbearable as you cleaned the open wound that was still bleeding profusely. You placed your other hand gently over his, stroking his skin in an attempt to comfort him. "It's okay, soldier. I know it hurts, but it will be alright."
With care, you slowly moved his hand back to his side before continuing. You could feel his awed gaze fixed on you, but you didn't mind; it meant he was conscious, and that was all you needed. Through a sharp wince, he choked out, "W-when this is all over, will you please allow me the h-honour of courting you, my lady?"
You raised an eyebrow in amusement, shaking your head in disbelief at his bold question. No matter how flirty other soldiers could get, none had ever dared to ask to court you. This was a first. With a shrug, you decided perhaps a little white lie wouldn't hurt too much.
"We'll talk about it when you're fully recovered. How's that sound?"
Smiling weakly through his pain, he nodded. "Sounds wonderful."
You continued tending to his wounds, your touch gentle but efficient. Despite the gravity of his injuries, he kept his eyes on you, drawing strength from your presence. The battlefield around you faded as you focused entirely on keeping him alive.
Minutes felt like hours, but finally, the worst was over. You had cleaned and dressed his wounds, stopping the bleeding and stabilising him for now. You leaned back, wiping the sweat from your brow, and gave him a reassuring smile.
"There, all done. You just need to rest and let your body heal."
He nodded, exhaustion evident in his eyes, but there was a glimmer of hope as well. "Thank you⊠for everything."
You patted his shoulder. "Just doing my job. Now, get some rest."
As you stood up to move on to the next patient, you couldn't help but glance back at him. His eyes were closed, his breathing steady. Shaking your head, you reminded yourself that it was just his delirium speaking. No man would want to court a lady simply after taking a single glance at her. He didn't know you well enough to feel that way. He would probably forget all about you by the time he was healed.
The same way you would forget him.
Only you were completely wrong about that. The first thing Mingi thought about when he regained consciousness was you. He lay in bed for weeks afterwards, with different physicians checking on him regularly, but never the angel who had saved him from moving on to the afterlife, the one who had comforted him during the most excruciating pain he had ever experienced.
When he tried to ask for you, he realised he didn't even know your name or designation. He had no information about you other than that you were the most beautiful woman he had ever seenâa description not very helpful for others to identify you.
Just like the wind, you were gone.
He never saw you again, but that was when his search for you began. He remained hopeful even as years passed. He didn't know why he was so fixated on one woman he knew nothing about. But you weren't just another woman. You were the one who saved his life, the first one he had the courage to ask out, and most importantly, you hadn't said no to him yet.
So that had to mean something. He must have a chance; he just needed to find you.
Even when all his friends, family, colleagues, and nearly the whole world called him a fool for being so hung up on someone he had only met once, someone he might never see again, he refused to give up. As a soldier and now a military strategist, he rarely interacted with women, and even when he did, they were often intimidated by his appearance and put off by his dangerous job. They rarely saw him as a marriage prospect.
That was why he couldn't move on from you. Your delicate treatment all those years ago had left an indelible mark on his heart. He could still remember every single touch of your fingertips on his skin, and he longed to have you close again.
His colleagues would laugh, calling him a fool. "You're chasing a ghost," they said. "She might not even be real." But Mingi knew better. He had felt your touch, heard your voice, and seen the kindness in your eyes. You were real, and you were out there somewhere. You had to be.
He devoted every spare moment to finding you, combing through records and speaking to anyone who might have known the medical trainees from that time. His friends often found him lost in thought, staring out into the distance, clearly fixated on a memory that had become his driving force, always looking for 'his one.'
When he finally found you again, he didn't expect it to be again in the war zone, where the conflict with Ruhon had just ended and the injured General Park was absent. He remembered hearing your delicate voice stand out amidst the sea of men blocking your way as you firmly tried to push through, unfazed by the soldiers surrounding youâa quality he greatly admired.
"Forgive us, ma'am. Women are not permitted here," one of the soldiers explained. Mingi recalled pushing through the crowd to hear your response: "Yes, I know that, but you don't understand. I'm here on His Majesty's orders. We received word that General Park has been poisoned, and I've been sent specifically to treat him."
I finally found you, my one.
At that moment, seeing you again was all that mattered. You were all he could see and hear. He was so fixated on the fact that you were right in front of him that he hadn't yet processed the implication of you being a royal female physician.
None of that was important as he cleared his throat, his deep voice booming across the space. "Let her through."
"But sir, the general isn't even hereâ"
The military strategist sighed. "I said let the lady through, soldier."
"Y-yes, sir."
He basked in your appreciative smile as the crowd finally dispersed, allowing you space to breathe and enter the camp after what felt like an eternity of being stranded outside. You had travelled far and long, and the last thing you needed was to be asked to return to the palace without a proper explanation. You had been sent to treat the poisoned military generalâhow could you explain to His Majesty if you returned empty-handed?
Following the tall man who politely introduced himself as General Officer Song, you immediately knew who he was. He was a renowned military strategist, the only one competent enough to be acknowledged by the great General Park Seonghwa.
"Thank you for intervening," you said, matching his brisk pace.
"Not a problem. It's an honour to have you here," he replied, his voice steady and respectful. "Royal Physician...?"
Your eyes widened in realisation at your lack of self-introduction. "Oh, how rude of me for not introducing myself. Please address me as Royal Physician Ahn."
"It's nice to meet you, Royal Physician Ahn," he said, pausing for a moment to take in your appearance, hoping you might recognise him. His heart sank slightly when you merely returned his smile courteously. "Pleasure to meet you as well, General Officer Song. Now, if you'll just take me to the general."
He chuckled, shaking his head. "He's not here, my lady."
You halted your steps. "Wh-what do you mean he's not here?"
He gestured to the main tent, beckoning for you to follow. "Please, I'll explain everything."
As you walked side by side, you couldn't help but feel a sense of familiarity and comfort around him, though you couldn't quite place it. Little did you know, the man beside you had been searching for you since that fateful day, driven by a memory that had never faded. And now, with you by his side, he was determined not to let you slip away again.
Except that might not be his choice to make.
"Don't you ever regret becoming a woman of the palace, unnie? I mean, look at thatâit must be nice to be in love," Subin, your colleague and childhood friend, said as she nudged your shoulder, nodding toward the second prince and his wife. They were the only royal couple so far to marry out of love and not duty, and the two were taking a stroll in the nearby cherry blossom garden.
You shook your head with a small smile. "We've been over this, Subin-ah. Love is a luxury for people like us. Besides, we now belong to His Majesty, and nothing can change that. Watch your words and don't let anyone catch you saying things like that."
As much as you agreed with her and thought it would be nice to have someone to love and be loved in return, you knew there was no point in dwelling on the impossible. Any chance of that was taken away from the moment you both decided to pursue careers as royal physicians. Not that you had much of a choiceâboth you and Subin were orphaned at a young age, the only survivors of a plague-ridden village that had claimed your families.
Left with nothing, you had begged the exhausted medical practitioners, who were struggling to treat as many infected people as they could at that time, to take you both in, promising to work in any way you could as payment. Feeling sympathetic and touched by your determination, they agreed, and you grew up as apprentices to these struggling physicians, promising to repay them when you were older. And you did, by signing up to enter the palace. It was the most successful path for any medical practitioner, and with your income, the dingy clinic run by your saviours could finally survive steadily.
However, this success came at a price.
Palace rules dictated that any woman working within belonged to the King. In other words, you were his property. Once you held an official position within the palace, you could never marry or have children unless it was with His Majesty himself, if one was luckyâor unlucky enoughâdepending on how one viewed it. Most palace women would work until their death and be buried within the palace walls. Only in rare and special cases were some granted the privilege to retire and leave the palace to live out the rest of their lives as they pleased.
You sighed, looking at your friend. "As much as I understand what you're saying, we both know there's no point in dreaming about it. Our path was set the moment we chose this life. Love, marriage, childrenâthose things are not for us."
She nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting a mixture of resignation and understanding. "I know, unnie. It's just... sometimes I wonder what it would be like, you know? To have someone who cares about you, who is willing to take care of you, who loves you."
You placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We have each other, and we have our duty. That's enough. It has to be."
She smiled weakly. "You're right. We made a choice, and we've helped so many people because of it. We should be proud of that."
"We should," you agreed, squeezing her shoulder gently. "And who knows? Maybe one day, we'll be among the lucky few who get to retire and live out the rest of our lives outside these walls."
Subin chuckled softly, finally moving and continuing the trek back to the royal medical hall. "A girl can dream, right?"
"Indeed, my dearest," you said, returning her smile. "A girl can dream."
Meanwhile, Mingi couldn't stop replaying the events of that dayâfinally seeing you again. He had sat you down and reassured you that the war with Ruhon had ended and that the general was already home, being taken care of by his own family doctor. Once you calmed down, relieved, Mingi began asking you multiple questions under the guise of courtesy, secretly hoping to see if you recognised him.
"How long have you been a royal physician, my lady?" he asked, his eyes keenly observing your reaction.
"Quite a few years now," you replied, sinking into your seat and relaxing at the pleasant news about the nerve-wracking war and the general's safety. "It's been a challenging but rewarding journey."
He nodded and smiled warmly, happy to ease your worries. "I can imagine. You must have treated many patients over the years."
"Yes, many," you said, your gaze distant for a moment as you recalled the countless faces. "Each one leaves a mark, in a way."
His heart sank slightly at your words, realising that he was likely just one of those many faces. "You must have seen some incredible recoveries," he continued, trying to keep the conversation going.
"Indeed, I have," you agreed, your expression softening. "It's always a blessing to see someone recover, to know you've made a difference."
His disappointment was palpable, though he masked it well. You didn't show any signs of recognising him, but he figured it must be because he was only one of many patients you had treated. But you were here now, and that was all that mattered to him. He resolved to work hard to help you remember him, to gain your trust, and most importantly, to earn your affection.
"You know," he said, his tone light and conversational, "it's rare to find someone as dedicated as you. We're lucky to have you."
You smiled modestly. "Thank you, General Officer Song. It's an honour to serve His Majesty and the people."
He leaned in slightly, his eyes sincere. "The world certainly needs more people like you, Royal Physician Ahn."
"I'm glad you think so," you said, feeling a surprising sense of comfort in his presence.
Mingi couldn't wipe the smile off his face as he recalled how you had eventually allowed him to escort you from the war site back to the palace. You hadn't rejected him, and that must mean something. It must mean he had a chance. It mustâ
"Look, hyung, I know you're happy you finally found her, but you do realise she's off-limits, right?" said Junghoon, his apprentice and close friend. The younger man shook his head at the military strategist's dreamy expression that had persisted on his face ever since reuniting with his dream girl.
Mingi's smile faltered slightly, but he quickly recovered. "Off-limits...?"
His apprentice raised an eyebrow. "She's a royal physician. You know the rules as well as I do. Don't tell me you forgot palace women are the King's property. They're not allowed to marry or have relationships outside of what His Majesty permits."
Mingi's expression turned more serious, though the light in his eyes didn't diminish. "I know the rules, Junghoon-ah. But I also know that nothing is truly impossible. Exceptions have been made before."
Junghoon sighed, clearly concerned. "You're playing a dangerous game, hyung. I just don't want to see you get hurt."
The military strategist nodded, appreciating his friend's worry. "I understand your concern. But she means more to me than just a fleeting interest. I've been looking for her ever since that day, and now that I've found her, I can't just let her go again."
Junghoon studied his mentor's determined expression for a moment before nodding slowly. "If you say so. Just be careful. You know the palace can be a ruthless place."
Mingi smiled again, more determined than ever. "I will, Junghoon-ah. Thanks for looking out for me, my friend."
The younger man patted him on the shoulder. "Always, hyung. Always."
Officer Song's smile weakened as soon as his apprentice left. Truth be told, the realisation that you were now a royal physician weighed heavily on him. He understood exactly what that meant. Under the reign of any unreasonable king, Mingi would never have dared to continue his pursuit. But he knew His Majesty was one of the kindest rulers Joseon had ever seen. While he wasn't exactly confident that things would go his way, he would be damned if he gave up without giving it his all first.
The reality of you being a woman of the palace was disheartening, but it didn't deter his determination to fight for you. He knew it was foolish, but that was the thing about loveâit made people do stupid things. He leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling, lost in thoughts of you.
His mind wandered back to the moment he first saw you again, the way you had smiled at him, the relief in your eyes when he reassured you. Those memories fueled his resolve. He had spent years searching for you, and now that he had found you, he couldn't let palace rules stand in his way.
As he sat there, the light from the setting sun casting long shadows in his room, he made a silent vow to himself. He would approach His Majesty, present his case with honesty and respect, and hope for the best. The King's kindness gave him a sliver of hope, and he clung to it with all his might.
Mingi knew the risks, knew the odds were against him, but he also knew that love was worth fighting for. He took a deep breath, his determination solidifying into a plan. No matter how impossible it seemed, he was ready to do whatever it took to be with you.
But the challenges were proving more difficult than he had imagined.
"General Officer Song, are you hearing yourself? Do you realise what you are asking of me? What would the people of this nation think if I were to give in to the whims of my men so easily? Rules are established for a reason," His Majesty said strictly.
Mingi lowered his head, sinking to his knees and bowing deeply to express his sincerity. He knew he could have gone to Seonghwa about this, and the general, being the King's favourite, would have easily helped him. But the military strategist didn't want to rely on or exploit his friend's connection. This was his love story, and it was something he needed to accomplish on his own.
He tried to keep his voice steady as he continued speaking. "I know this must be an incredibly outrageous request, Your Majesty. I wouldn't have taken the risk to come here and ask this if my feelings for Royal Physician Ahn were not genuine. I implore you, my King, I am serious about my intentions to court her."
The elderly ruler sighed, leaning back on his throne and rubbing his forehead. "Officer Song, if you think you are the first to come to me with such a request, I assure you, you are not. I'm aware I am considered one of the most benevolent rulers of Joseon, but my kindness is not to be taken advantage of."
Mingi's eyes widened, and he quickly shook his head. "No, Your Majesty! I would neverâ"
The King raised a hand to stop him. "Let me finish, Officer Song. I know you believe you are in love, but many others have thought the same. I have granted opportunities to pursue what they call love, only for them to turn out to be mistakes. You are young, and you will meet more women who are available and more well-suited for you. Don't let your temporary feelings misguide your actions. Trust me, you will move on and forget about her before you know it."
However, the elderly ruler was unsurprised to see his words only igniting greater determination in the young man's eyes. Mingi parted his lips, prepared to protest and prove His Majesty wrong, but the elderly man waved him off. "Stubborn as always. Fine, if you are so determined to pursue this, I will allow you the opportunity to realise I am correct. Love is a two-way street and cannot flourish with only one side invested. Go ahead and do your best then. Let's see if Royal Physician Ahn will even reciprocate your feelings. She is one of my most dedicated staff members; we'll see if you can sway her resolve."
Although the King's words were intended to discourage him, Mingi was relieved it wasn't a flat-out rejection. This meant he still had hope, a chance to win your heart and make you his. Bowing deeply, he exclaimed, "Your grace is immeasurable, Your Majesty! I wish you ten thousand years of life and reign!"
In the days that followed his conversation with His Majesty, the military strategist became consumed with thoughts of getting closer to you without appearing too forward. Even during his daily training, his mind wandered, preoccupied with strategies for approaching you subtly. So, when a blunt practice sword collided with his arm, he let out a yelp of pain, jolting back to reality. Though the sword was dull, it still left a small wound and a bruise that was sure to darken over time from the impact.
Junghoon cursed and dropped his weapon, rushing to his mentor's side. "Why didn't you dodge?! You're such an idiot sometimes!"
Mingi winced, cradling his arm. "I was just... thinking of ways to approach her subtly."
Junghoon raised a sceptical eyebrow, shaking his head lightly. "Well, here's the perfect opportunity. You're injured, so go to the medical hall to be treated by her."
"Oh, that's an amazing idea!"
"Yeah, it's not exactly rocket scienceâ"
"You're brilliant, Junghoon-ah! Thanks, dinner's on me!" Mingi exclaimed excitedly, dashing off towards the royal medical hall.
The younger man shrugged, watching his mentor run off with an amused grin. "Huh, I guess I am a genius."
Mingi struggled to calm his racing heart, his mind reeling with all sorts of scenarios that could unfold. He thought about what to say to start a conversation, to get to know you better, to make you remember himâ
"Whoa there, watch your step!"
His breath hitched as you appeared right before him, your arms reaching out to steady him by the shoulders. He couldnât utter a word from the shock and embarrassment. Meanwhile, you were focused on the area of his arm he was clutching, noticing the cloth slowly turning red from the blood seeping through. Your eyes widened.
"Oh my gosh, you're bleeding! Come inside, quickly!" you exclaimed.
The military strategist sighed in relief, realising you were too preoccupied with his injury to notice how foolish he felt. He couldn't take his eyes off you, his mouth hanging open like a fish out of water, suddenly forgetting how to speak.
Pull yourself together, you idiot!
All his plans for starting a conversation flew out the window as he fought to maintain his composure throughout his visit. Though he had shared conversations with you while escorting you back to the palace from the war zone, he hadn't been this close to you in a long time. The last time was during your first meeting, and he had been too numb from blood loss to properly register your touch. Now, he was acutely aware of your proximity as he sat on one of the many beds in the hall, with you settled by his side, checking the tray before you and ensuring you had everything you needed.
"Now, it would be great if you could just lift your arm a little," you murmured.
He nodded and complied, too afraid that his voice would tremble like a nervous schoolboy if he spoke. Carefully, you rolled his sleeve up to his shoulder and assessed the small wound already surrounded by a darkening bruise, your touch gentle.
"Don't worry, Officer Song. I'll make sure this doesn't leave a scar," you said reassuringly.
He smiled shyly, nodding appreciatively. If only you knew what your presence was doing to him and his poor little heart. The warmth of your hands on his skin and the soothing tone of your voice made his pulse quicken. He struggled to think of something to say, something that wouldn't reveal just how flustered he felt.
As you cleaned the wound and applied a salve, his thoughts raced. He wanted to find the right words, something that would spark a meaningful conversation. But the words seemed to stick in his throat whenever he opened his mouth. He watched you work, mesmerised by your concentration and the care you put into treating him.
"Thank you, Royal Physician Ahn," he finally managed to say, his voice steady but soft. "For everything."
You looked up and smiled warmly. "It's my duty, Officer Song. But you're welcome."
That smile, he thought, was worth all the awkwardness and nervousness he felt. It gave him hope and determination. He wasn't going to give up. Not now, not ever.
Determined to make up for his failed attempt to talk to you, Mingi returned to the medical hall nearly every day for the next week, each time presenting a minor cut or bruise. He knew he wasn't being very subtle, but it didn't matter. He needed you to understand his heart before seeing if you could feel the same, if he stood any chance at all. However, he slowly realised he was getting nowhere if he couldn't openly express his interest and sincerity in courting you.
Sensing his struggles, Royal Secretary Choi could no longer sit by and watch his friend flounder. Truthfully, San had learned about the military strategist's pursuit of one of the palace's most recognised female physicians from His Majesty himself, who had expressed his wish for Mingi to give up. But the royal secretary, being a man in love himself, understood the taller man's feelings better than anyone.
"You know, you can't keep going back to the medical hall, pretending to be sick or injured forever," San said, approaching and sitting down beside Mingi in one of the pavilions in the cherry blossom garden.
Officer Song's head shot up to see his friend before pressing his face into his palms. "How else can I approach her, San? There's only so much I can do. She's a palace woman, and I can't possibly make my intentions clear without His Majesty's permission."
San sighed and placed a hand on Mingi's shoulder. "Actually⊠you might have his permission, but you didn't hear it from me." The taller man's eyes widened, prompting his friend to elaborate.
The royal secretary continued, "His Majesty has a soft heart, as you know. While he discouraged you, deep down, he just doesn't want you to get hurt. He secretly hopes it all goes your way but wouldn't admit it. Listen, there's a banquet happening soon to celebrate our unity with Ruhon. Perhaps you could ask her to attend with you."
Mingi straightened up, eyes shining with hope. "I can do that...?"
San nodded slowly. "Technically, important figures like you and Royal Physician Ahn are encouraged to attend and show support. There's nothing wrong with a little networking, right? Besides, His Majesty is already aware of your intentions. If she agrees to go with you, this would be a huge step in your pursuit. Wouldn't you agree?"
Hell yeah, I do.
"You wanna bet he's gonna show up again soon?" Subin teased, smirking as you rolled your eyes and playfully smacked her on the arm. "Don't jinx it, just shut up and go on your lunch break already."
It had been a particularly hectic day with the arrival of envoys from Ruhon for the upcoming celebration. The influx of visitors sought remedies for their seasickness after enduring the boat journey, keeping all the royal physicians busy stocking up on medicine and treating the sudden rush of patients suffering from nausea. The last thing you needed was for Song Mingi to appear with another one of his tiny scratches, requesting attention.
You were silently hoping he wouldn't show up today, relishing in a moment of tranquillity as the lunch hour approached and most of the patients had been taken care of. The first batch of physicians, including Subin, would go to lunch while you and the second batch would stay back until they returned.
But alas, the peace was short-lived.
"Ooh, guess who's here again," your colleague remarked, nodding toward the entrance of the royal medical hall where a certain tall, handsome military strategist strode in for what felt like the thousandth time this week. You sighed, refusing to look up from your book. "Please tell me it's not him."
She gulped, watching him approach. "Hate to break it to you, but it is your not-so-secret admirer, General Officer Song."
"Good afternoon, ladies. I, uh⊠I'm here today becauseâ" his familiar deep voice rang out as he paused at a respectful distance.
Clearing your throat, you finally closed your book and turned to face him with a courteous smile, finishing his sentence for him, "Good afternoon to you too, Officer Song. Let me guess, you're here because you got hurt during training again?"
Instead of the usual sheepish nod, he shook his head and nervously fiddled with his fingers. "No, actually⊠I came to ask if⊠i-if you would like to accompany me to the royal banquet celebrating Joseon's unity with Ruhon tonight, Royal Physician Ahn?"
You froze at his question, and your colleague mirrored your reaction. The two of you exchanged bewildered glances, trying to process the fact that this fool was openly pursuing you, a woman working in the palace, someone who belonged to the King.
Does he realise what he's doing?

"Is that her? Your 'one'?" the general teased, nudging Mingi on the shoulder as they observed the royal physician conversing with Lady Park, who was now about five months into her pregnancy.
The military strategist blushed furiously, nodding. "Yes, that's her."
"Has His Majesty granted you permission to court her?" Seonghwa asked, and the younger man winced, shaking his head. "No, he hasn't. In fact, he told me to give up on my pursuit, convinced me it was merely infatuation and that it would eventually pass."
General Park frowned. "That can't be right. You've been searching for her for years. How is it that you've found your soulmate years before me yet still haven't won her over, while I'm already expecting a child with mine, Mingi-yah? Do you want me to speak with the King? I'm sure he'll understand."
Officer Song's response caught Seonghwa off guard as he shook his head. "It's okay, hyung-nim. I appreciate your offer to speak to His Majesty, but I want to handle this on my own. I don't want her to feel pressured to accept me. I want her to see my sincerity and decide for herself if she shares the same feelings. Then, I can show the King that this is worth pursuing, that she's worth it."
"Are you sure, my friend?"
"I've never been more sure of anything."

________
âY/L/N.â You lifted an eyebrow, finding an unfamiliar older woman at the entrance to your office. Your supervisor nodded beside her and you pulled your headphones off, letting them rest around your neck. âYouâre off desk duty.â
âThe chatter from these guys-â
âYeah, I know. Somebody else will handle it. As of five minutes ago, you report to her now,â said your supervisor, rattling a knuckle on the door. You were ready to argue about how you were promised desk duty to finish out these last six months but she was gone before you could blink. You grumbled as the older woman stepped inside, closing the heavy door behind her.
âI heard you want out,â she said. You leaned back in your chair, cocking your head. âNobody ever really leaves the CIA you know.â
âWhatâs my handle ID?â you asked, the woman raising her chin. âI ainât telling you jack shit until I know youâre legit.â
âBlack Midnight Angel. You want to get to work now? Or you going to waste more of my time?â You narrowed your eyes, the woman giving it right back. âWork this job for six months until you leave and the agency will pay for your schooling. And I know youâre skeptical so we already wired the funds to your bank account.â
âBlack ops?â you asked quietly. She shook her head, taking a seat in the chair across your desk.
âMallory Fischer,â she said, your lips pressing into a thin line. âYou know what I do then.â
âYes, I do. Question is why do you want me on your team? There are far more qualified people.â She looked you up and down, a small smirk crossing her lips.
âYouâre right. Your agent assessment scores are average aside from your intel work. Last time you were in the field you were shot-â
âWhy. Me.â You knew it was coming. You knew exactly what was coming.
âYou have a year of medical school under your belt.â ThatâŠwas not what you were expecting. Did she notâŠknow? Maybe not. Fine. You werenât bringing that up if you could help it.
âI do. You should know that the reason I couldnât finish was because the CIA recruited me, despite my desire to not join,â you said, letting it hang in the air. Mallory rolled her eyes and crossed her legs. âYou people fucked up my life plan you know. Iâm thirty two. Iâm going to be a good 5 years minimum behind my peers by the time I graduate.â
âDid I give you the impression that I give a shit?â You grumbled but kept your mouth shut. âYou agreed to work here.â
âYou threatened to deport my friend if I didnât,â you growled.Â
âMaybe you shouldnât have had an ex-boyfriend with ties to-â
âJust stop. What the fuck do you want with me?â
âI have Soldier Boy.â You laughed, Mallory dead eyed. âIâm quite serious.â
âHe fucking blew up last week.â Mallory cocked her head. You sighed, running a hand over your mouth. âHe fell from, what, the seventieth floor? Heâs really that strong?â
âHeâs damn near indestructible. If it makes you feel better, Maeve survived too. But seeing as how she hates Vought more than most, we let her slide. Pretty sure she and her girlfriend went up to-âÂ
âSo sheâs free and you donât give a fuck about what she does. Fine. But what the fuck does âI have Soldier Boyâ mean exactly?â you asked. Mallory eyed you up and down.Â
âHeâs Homelanders father.â You rolled your eyes and she frowned. âWhy exactly is that not surprising to you?â
âCome on,â you laughed. âThe most powerful supe to exist suddenly disappears right around the time Homelander was born? Theyâre both the poster child for all american wonder boy. I figured he was the dad doing a book report in middle school. Itâs not that complicated.â
âThen you can understand why having Homelanderâs father provides us an opportunity. His power is the only weapon we have that comes close to taking Homelander out. You watch the news. Homelander is losing his shit. We need to find a way to deal-â
âYou donât need Soldier Boyâs powers to fucking catch Homelander. If you caught pops, you can catch the kid and for the record, I am not one of your fucking super agents so you want me for research, fine. But save the shooting and catching Homelander for your own people.â You scooted your chair in closer to your computer, Mallory grabbing your hand roughly when you placed it on your mouse.
âSoldier Boy didnât have the power to knock out other supes powers until after the Russianâs tortured him. We need to understand that ability of his and what made it change.â You sighed, pulling your hand away. âWork the job and in six months youâre gone.â
âAnd what exactly does this job entail?â
âWe need a doctor, or the next best thing, for the night shift. Twelve hour shifts. You feed him, clean him, tend to him. Most of the time heâs going to be out cold. Itâs maybe an hour of real work a night. You can do whatever the fuck you want in your office when youâre taking care of him, I really donât care. We just need him in working order, got it?â
You pushed away from your computer, lifting your chin. âAnd that hour where heâs not out cold? How the fuck do I go near him without dying?â
âYou better not be claustrophobic.â
Two Days Later
Mallory had ditched you not five minutes after seven pm after showing you to an office in the very plain looking warehouse in upstate New York. Sheâd naturally failed to mention that Soldier Boy was being held at a facility outside of the city. But you werenât about to complain, not when the commute was shorter than your original one. So there you stood, a frozen TV dinner in your backpack, a guard dressed head to toe in black combat gear with an assault rifle almost as big as you, still wondering what the hell you were meant to do.
âYou guys got a break room?â you sighed, dumping the bag on the desk and pulling out your dinner.
âTwo doors down on the left. Unisex bathroom is around the corner,â he said, still not revealing his face from behind his dark mask. That was fine. He was an overqualified security guard in your mind. âMallory left a schedule and map of the building on your desk. Burn them when youâve memorized it.â
âYup,â you said, walking past him and heading down the hall. âSo how many guards are there right now?â
âThe only staff on the night shift is yourself, a dozen interior guards, and four patrolling external officers.â
âNo custodial staff?â you asked, entering the bare bones room with a microwave, old fridge and a wobbly table. Wonderful.
âNo. They clean during the day. The facility isnât large enough to warrant external help.â You hummed, popping the tray out of the box and into the microwave. âDo you have any further questions?â
âIs the Novichok gas always on in the room heâs held in?â you asked. He shook his head.
âHeâs kept in a cryo tube during the night. Before entering the room, we will fill the room with gas for five minutes that will allow him to waken slightly but remain harmless. You will then enter in your hazmat suit and remove him from the chamber where you will perform your duties. When you indicate you are finished, we will increase the gas until he passes out and you can place him back in the tube. When you leave the room, we will stop the gas.âÂ
âDoes he eat during the day? What about the bathroom?â He was still and you frowned. âDude. I get that everything is need to know but I need to know basic shit about my patient.â
âYou feed him according to the schedule. He has a catheter.â
âAnd going number two?âÂ
âHe doesnât get solids.â
âI donât care what kind of liquid diet heâs on, heâs still going to shit.â
âI have my job, you have yours.âÂ
You grumbled when he left, hitting the power on for your dinner. Just what you wanted for a career. Wipe the ass of the worldâs most powerful supe.
You tried to forget about that portion of your âdutiesâ as you ate your meal. It was still going to be easier than your first rotation in med school, that was for sure. Heâd justâŠlay there drugged out of his mind. With the small threat in the air of if your hazmat suit tore for any reason, like say an angry supe being held prisoner grabbed it and ripped the plastic which he very likely was capable of even in that state.Â
Easy peasy.
You were able to distract yourself for an hour by walking the halls to figure out the layout of the building. The guard had been right. It wasnât a large building. There were a few offices and typical building facilities in the front of the building. Security was stationed in the middle and Soldier Boyâs holding cell along with a viewing room was in the back corner. What appeared to be an operating room was further down the hall but that wasnât entirely uncalled for in a black ops prison like this. You couldnât exactly take your wounded agents or prisoners to a normal hospital.Â
You ended your self-guided tour in the viewing room staring down at the dark room below. Save for the soft blue light emitting from the cryo tube. You couldnât see much at the angle. The top of the tube was see through but all you spotted were a pair of bare feet.
âHeâs not strapped down?â you asked as the door to your right opened, a guard stepping through, this one slightly shorter than the one youâd spoken to originally.
âNo. Youâll need to move him around. Heâs wearing a face mask providing a direct stream of Novichok gas to him. You only need to remove it when you shove a tube down his throat for feeding. Iâd suggest saving that for last.â
You quirked an eyebrow up. He was a supe, sure. This was a CIA secret holding prison, sure. The treatment of prisoners didnât exactly have to adhere to the Geneva Convention in this kind of environment.
But it felt gross treating him like a meat puppet, keeping him alive only to figure out his powers. Which made you consider something else.
âWhy go through the trouble of keeping him alive? Wouldnât it be easier to just drown him? Or just take his DNA and recreate the power aspect?â you asked. Unsurprisingly, the guard didnât answer. You crossed your arms, glancing at the clock on the wall. It wasnât much past eight and there were still a few hours until his scheduled âwakeâ time. âNew plan.â
âNewâŠplan?â he asked. You just knew he was rolling his eyes at you behind those thick black goggles.
âWell heâs my patient, isnât he? Iâm making a new schedule, one thatâs more appropriate for the patient.â
âYou canât do that,â he said quickly, your chin raising. âHeâs a prisoner.â
âI know Iâm just the glorified ass wiper for this guy but the more he feels like he has someone in his corner, the more apt he is to let a secret loose. Maybe he says jack shit but maybe he tells me what the russians did so you can figure out whatever power crap youâre looking for. Got it?âÂ
âThatâs the Y/N Iâd expect.â You turned around, Mallory appearing in a doorway behind you. âDismissed, Greg.â
âDonât play games with me,â you said when the guard left. Mallory took a few steps forward to join you at your side, peering down into the room below.Â
âWe had to know youâd be a team player. Youâre not dumb. I think you can understand why I want you to do this job, even if you donât have your medical degree.â You narrowed your eyes.Â
âAm I supposed to be his doctor or his fake friend? Which is it?â you asked.
âBoth. It probably wonât work, the cocky bastardâs too smart for it, but it doesnât hurt to try every option. Iâd like to think you in particular would be willing to do whatever it takes to figure out that supe destroying beam of his. Am I wrong?â You ignored her, staring through the glass to the dark room.Â
âYou hired me to be his doctor so thatâs what Iâll be. Anything more will be my choice, am I clear?âÂ
âFine. Now letâs get you acquainted with your patient.â
âFine.â You turned and left the room, heading down a set of stairs. You were in a changing room that had hazmat suits and respirators, different outfits for you to choose from. Along the back was a fridge that held his food, a thick mixture that looked completely unappealing. Beside the fridge was a cart for you to bring in and out, a medical bag on top but otherwise it was bare.
You stared at the options and sighed as you picked up the gas mask on its own. For one, if he wanted to kill you, he really could, suit or no suit. But mostly you had a bad feeling in your gut, like he needed some actual human interaction. If they were barely letting him be conscious during the day, he was going to start having problems. Namely, the angry supe was only going to get angrier which meant more violent which meant way more likely he killed you.
A gentle hand might be the only way to get through these six months in one piece.Â
After securing your mask, you made a note of the log by the fridge, surprised to find heâd been fed roughly an hour before your shift started. Huh. Maybe they were treating him better than youâd though. With your bag in hand, you hit the button on the wall, thick metal doors opening and allowing you to step into an air lock. You hit the button behind you, sealing it off and then a large black one with a hazard symbol over it. A small light appeared red over the button for a moment before turning green. You hit the button on the far wall and another thick door opened to the dim room. A fine mist clung to the air, deadly novichok swirling all around you. You raised your arm, checking for any reaction but you werenât expecting one. Novichok was an aerosol. You had to breathe it in to suffer any consequences which hopefully youâd never find out how that felt.
The door shut quietly behind you, leaving you alone save for Mallory observing from behind the thick glass panel above.
You set the bag down, approaching the side of the far end of the chamber and hitting a large black button. A locking mechanism released, the door swinging open and allowing you to grab the end of the pull out tray. The first thing you noticed was Soldier Boy was naked, followed by a slight warmth to the air. The tray helped but he was heavy, a solid wall of muscle you noticed as your eyes darted over his body. Every inch of him oozed strength.
Ever so gently, you moved to his side, knuckles grazing over up his leg, over his strong thigh, soldi chest. You rested your palm over his chest, a slow, steady beat thrumming away.
You didnât falter, didnât do anything strange as you started to check his pulse, mind wandering while you went through the motions.
Sure, youâd be his fucking doctor. Until you figured out how to get him out of there that was.Â
Ten minutes later you returned to the viewing room where Mallory had remained, her focus on Soldier Boy below.
âDonât play dumb, Y/N. I know youâre thinking about how to break him out. Why do you think I hired you?â You smirked, cocking your head.Â
âSo you donât want me for my medical knowledge. Shocking.â
âFuck no, just like I know you have no desire to finish med school. Use that money for whatever the fuck you want. You do what I ask and weâll give you ten times that and maybe we end up dealing with your littleâŠproblem along the way.â
You glanced at Soldier Boy, pursing your lips. âWhy the ruse? Why not just tell me you want me to act like Iâm the only one on his side?â
âBecause I had to see how good an actor you are. The second I told you he can take away another supes powersâŠyou should have seen your face. You were already in. Youâll have to be on all the time with him though. No mistakes. Heâll snap your neck if he finds out.â
Your gaze shot back to Mallory, her mouth forming a small smile. âIâm good at pretending everything is just fine. So what exactly is the plan to get him to trust me?â
âBe his friend. A few weeks from now youâll miraculously break him out after learning about the torture he goes through during the day in our attempts to understand his powers. Heâll be leery of course but weak with the massive dose of novichok will get in him. By the time it wears off, heâll trust that youâre a caretaker for him, likely even fall for you. And then? You prove your loyalty, shower him with that love he so desperately wants but wonât admit to. By then, heâll blow the powers out of whoever you tell him to. Heâll be our loaded gun without even realizing.â
âThatâs what you wanted all along,â you said, Mallory nodding for the two of you to leave the room, heading down a hallway. âBecause if it doesnât work, you can blame it all on me.â
âThereâs a reason I wanted you on this job kid and itâs not just because that man will take one look at you and want to screw you. You will need to adapt on the fly. Use that head of yours and weâll relay the list of supes we want him to take out and then heâll go back in his box.â
âWeâll worry about that later. Letâs just hope he doesnât kill me first.â
You were tired when you got home from work the next day around seven thirty in the morning. Mallory and security had given you an in-depth briefing of their plans. It was all very simple. Manipulate him. Make him see you as his only friend. Break him out and make him reliant on you to the point where he was doing exactly what they wanted without lifting a finger.
Except that wasnât your plan. Youâd break him out, play along to get him there but the second you had him alone, youâd tell him the truth.
And if he killed you in a fit of rage, so be it.
If he even could.
Three Weeks Later
You were grateful Mallory no longer came into work during your shifts. She wasnât suspicious of you. Shit, she thought she had you read like an open book and you were perfectly happy to let everyone keep on thinking that. The guards left you alone unless you asked for something from them which meant you spent a lot of time either in Benâs room, youâd taken to calling him Ben when you went in with him, or sitting in the observation room with a book.
It wasnât hard to feign boredom when there wasnât much to do. You desperately wanted to spend more time with Ben but it was dangerous to leave him off the gas for more than thirty minutes at a time. He wasnât exactly what youâd call cognitively aware when youâd pull open the drawer and assess him. His eyes would flutter open weakly, a glimpse of an angry glare behind them before heâd call you a bitch and theyâd shut again, his chest rising and falling deeper than when he slept.Â
Which meant you were in for a fun time in about forty five minutes when you were supposed to âbreak him freeâ according to the plan. You were meant to go about your usual routine with him before theyâd take him away to the operating room they called it. More like commit war crimes against a prisoner.
You didnât know exactly what they were doing to him during the day but it was bad enough that Ben was starting to show injuries. Injuries. On an all powerful supe. Nothing major. A few bruises and scratches but it meant something was up and you wanted to be done with this charade and now.
You just needed Soldier Boy to take care of Reaper, that god awful supe, and then he could do whatever the fuck he wanted for all you cared.
A faint scream in the distance made your head snap up. You heard it again and closed your book. Who the hell would be screaming in a place like this? You got up and headed down the hall, dipping your head in the observation room.
A louder scream rang out as you saw the empty cryo chamber. You ran out to the hall, bumping into a guard.
âHey, Y/N,â he said, Lance from the sounds of it.Â
âWhere is he?â you asked, more screams heard now.
âOh. Yeah, they kept him in the operating room longer today so he can do his âbreakoutâ with you soon. Sorry for the noise, he can get loud sometimes.â
âWhat?â you asked, furrowing your brow.Â
âThe breakout. Youâre supposed to grab him from the operating-â
âI know which room Iâm supposed to fake the breakout from. Why is he screaming?â you asked. The guard blinked, raising an eyebrow.
âHe always screams. I would too if they shoved nuclear waste through a needle into my eyeball.â You scrunched up one eye, the guard giving you a look like you were the weird one. âItâs the only way they get the red matter out of himâŠâ
âIf you have your fucking red matter then what the fuck are you faking a break out for,â you growled. The guard held up his hands. âI asked a question.â
âListen. Iâm only telling you this cause I like you. They needed to fake a breakout that way they can drop their red matter bomb theyâve been brewing up and wipe out Soldier Boy and let the fallout spread down to the city and kill all the supes there, including Homelander. You wereâŠthe fall guy,â he said quietly. Your eye twitched as you grabbed his assault rifle, jamming the end under his jaw. âY/N-â
âThe only reason Iâll let you live is because you warned me. Now put on your gas mask.â He hesitantly did as told, securing it before you clocked him in the back of the head.Â
Soldier Boy let out another pained scream and youâd had enough. You grabbed your gas mask from your office and ducked into the security office, grateful to find it empty. A large red button behind glass sat on the far end of the console.
NOVICHOK - EMERGENCY USE ONLY
âFuckers,â you said before smashing it, jamming it with the butt of your weapon. You watched on screen as people started to panic and then came the screams in the hallways as the nerve gas tore through their nervous systems, quickly but oh so painfully killing them. You knew thereâd be a few people that would see the flashing amber lights in the halls and get their masks on before they keeled over. Whatever.
Youâd deal with those people easily enough.
The monitors showed most people had gone down, convulsing violently as they foamed at the mouth. The south hallway was clear and after checking your gun, you ducked back outside, slipping the sidearm from the guard youâd knocked out into the back of your jeans. Soldier Boy had stopped screaming, the halls eerily quiet. Still, you stepped carefully, amber flashes bouncing off the dull gray walls.
Past the bodies, you went down the far passage, taking a breath before opening the double doors. Blood stained the walls. Dried blood. Old, rusty, oxidized blood.Â
âWhat the fuckâŠâ you trailed off, eyes settling on where a barely conscious Soldier Boy lay restrained on the metal table in the center of the room.Â
âY/N,â he mumbled, your eyes widening briefly. He rarely spent time awake with you and the rare occasion he did heâd only ever called you curses.Â
âCan you fight?â you asked, unbuckling the thick leather restraint wrapped around his right wrist. He was strong, powerful. But even he couldnât escape when they kept him gasing him all the time. He grunted, closing his eyes. âMost of them are dead but thereâs stragglers to deal with.â
âWhy?â You raised an eyebrow under your mask, removing the leather restraints over his torso and left wrist. âWhat are you doing?â
âGetting you out of here. I need to get you up North,â you said, strapping the gun over your body. You helped him sit up, Soldier Boyâs body lax, littered with dark bruises. âCan you walk?â
He only stared as he slumped against your chest, face jammed against your body before mumbling, âYou got great tits.â
âJesus fucking christ,â you muttered. You grasped his shoulders, forcing him upright, Soldier Boy scowling as you barely kept his heavy body steady. âWhatâs wrong with you?â
âShut the fuck up, bitch,â he tried to growl, coming out like a petulant child instead. You rolled your eyes, scanning the room quickly. Trays of syringes littered the room, bottles of something red inside some, a cream white liquid in another. âFuck off.â
You dropped his shoulder, grasping his jaw hard, Soldier Boy flinching slightly at the touch. Youâd deal with whatever the fuck that reaction was later.Â
âI will leave you here to die you insolent little man-child. Cut. The. Shit. Now.â The hardness in his gaze stopped, an almost panicked expression replacing it. âWork with me here. Whatâd they do to you? Why are you the equivalent of a sack of potatoes?â
âThey keep me gassed and stick the white stuff in my eyes. I think itâs novichok,â he said. He closed his eyes, slumping forward ever so slightly before flying them open. âItâs the only way they get the drugs in. Or out.â
âOut?â You raised an eyebrow, shaking your head. âLater. Can you move on your own or no?â
âIâm fucked for at least a few hours. Does that answer your fucking question?â He spit out the words, his glare indicating youâd be thrown against a wall if he were capable at the moment.
âLittle bastard,â you grumbled to yourself, slinging the automatic rifle across your chest. He raised an eyebrow as you sighed. âHereâs how this works. You do as I say or you can die here. Your choice.â
âGet me the hell out of this shithole,â he growled, reluctantly holding out a hand. You turned, squatting down and pulling him into a firemanâs carry. He was warm against you, two hundred plus pounds of solid muscle. âAt least you ainât a weakling.â
âShut up. Take that handgun in my waistband and shoot anything that moves and I mean anything.â He grunted which you took as an answer. You shifted you itself. Fuck, he was heavy. Dead weight too.Â
He might be able to run his mouth but that was all he had going for him. He nearly dropped the gun the second he took it out of the back of your jeans. Without another word, you exited the room, fine mist filling the corridors. Quickly, you moved down the hall, Soldier Boy grunting more than once.
âShut up,â you whispered.
âFuck off,â he snapped back, albeit more quietly. With gritted teeth, you continued forward, eyes flaring wide when you saw movement ahead. Gunfire rang out as you spun around, Soldier Boy hissing as loud shots fired off behind you. It went quiet, Ben dropping huffing against your back. âThanks for using me as a fucking meat shield. Thatâs the only reason you busted me out, isnât it?â
You dropped him straight on the ground, straddling his hips, not even a flicker of amusement on his face. You held up the gun, Soldier Boy scoffing. âWhat part of listening to what the fuck I say donât you understand?â
âLeave me to die then, bitch.â You grabbed his jaw, pressing your thumb right under his eyes socket, his eyes narrowing. You pointed the gun at the inner corner, his eyes focused on the barrel.
âI need you to kill a supe for me. Reaper.â
âReaper? That dumb fuck kid? Why the-â You pressed the hot barrel against his cheek, Ben growling.
âIt doesnât matter why I want him dead but I do. You will die if we stay here, Ben,â you said, tucking the gun back away. You sighed, checking the silent hallways once before re-focusing on him. âLots of people hurt you. People here hurt you. But I am the only one thatâs ever tried to protect you from something. So be quiet or I will leave.â
A grin crawled onto his face, a frown forming on yours. âYou need me, donât you sweetheart? Cut the tough guy act-â
You grabbed his throat, Soldier Boyâs eyes narrowing. âA bomb is going to drop killing all supes on the eastern seaboard. Thatâs us and you know what? Fuck it. Maybe I get lucky and this thing kills Reaper somehow and I donât need you.â
âDramatic are we?â he said as you stood upright. You got three steps down the hall when he slammed his fist against the cement floor. âFine! Iâll shut up and kill Reaper for you. Now get me out.â
You smirked, wiping it off your face and hoisting him up once more. He stuck to his word, keeping his lips sealed as you made your way out, shooting one more guard at the front lobby area before you were in the parking lot.Â
After a quick check for trackers and bombs, you picked him up off the cold pavement, sitting him in the passenger seat of your SUV.
âMy suit,â he mumbled. âNeed my suit.â
âAlready in my trunk. I was supposed to take break you out,â you said, closing the door.
âWhat the hell does that mean?â he asked when you got behind the wheel, leaning over to buckle him up so he didnât slump over.
âIt doesnât matter,â you said, pulling off your mask and tossing it in the back seat. âWe need to-â
You both tensed when the night sky lit up red in the distance, a towering inferno blazing up into the atmosphere from the direction of the city.
He grabbed your hand as a shockwave barreled toward you, both of you flinching as a strange feeling washed through your bones.
But you also felt a sharp familiar zap kick in and course through your arm, straight into his hand. He pulled his hand away, staring at you.Â
âWhat the fuck was that? Why the fuck arenât we dead?â he asked, flexing his hand as best he could.
âI sort ofâŠcanât die. I guess that bomb canât kill meâŠor Reaper,â you mumbled, turning the car on and driving out of the compound. All the while you felt his drugged up stare. âI canât control it. But good news for you, apparently you canât die either when youâre touching me.â
You didnât want to acknowledge that you felt all of his fear and pain when youâd somehow protected him. How afraid he was. How fucking alone he felt way, way deep down in a place even he didnât touch until the moment of immediate death.
You slowed down, reaching over to hold his hand, ignoring the way he relaxed at the touch. Soldier Boy was out cold fast as the adrenaline wore off, his grasp on you too tight to slip out of.
You didnât get far though, barely a few miles up the road when you saw people arguing outside a house, strange red streaks across their skin.
What the fuck did that bomb do?
Unfortunately for the two of you, you didnât have to wait long to find out.

đBoxer | Arthur Tv
context: Arthur used to box n i think that's LENG so here's a 1.2k blurb summary: Boxer!ArthurTV returning to the locker rooms after his fight to get the medical attention he needs from the first aider who's subsequently the coach's daughter... and the girl who makes Arthur's cock hard <3 | Boxer ATV x first aider, coach's daughter!reader CWs: very light smut, just dry humping and making out really
"Oh my God, Arthur!" You hissed his name as he attacked your neck, gasp falling from your lips as he ruthlessly sucked and bruised the flesh, completely remorseless with his near bruising grip of his still wrapped and bandaged hands on either of your hips.
"Please don't stop me, I literally haven't been able to fuck anything for weeks-"
You could feel the boxer's shorts tightening as the words fell from his lips, and you had to knot your fingers through his locks and pull him away from your neck to take the gumshield out of the desperate man's mouth and look over his face - having only just returned from the ring before rushing to you - scanning for injury.
"My God you look so fucking good when you're being all professional," Arthur groaned again as he took in the way that your eyes zipped across his face, lashes lengthened with mascara and plump lower lip taken between your lip as you inspected the boxer's face for injury.
He couldn't help himself pressing his lips to yours - throwing you off guard as he didn't waste a single moment by starting at level 0 and working his way up - no, his tongue slot between your lips and let you taste metal - blood - in your mouth from the boxer's cut gum, his tongue ravaging your mouth and taking your breath away as you found yourself falling into his tricks and wanting to entertain the kiss and contact with him. Thus, you had to pull back before you lost every shred of self-restraint and ended up letting him fuck you against the lockers right then and there.
"Arthur- my dad could come in any minute and see you!" You had to remind him, swatting his hands away from your hips despite your love for the way those long appendages sat across your skin, squeezing and rubbing over you with veins wrapping around the backs of his hands and making the prettiest sight as they ran up his thick forearms - densely packed with muscle that lead up to even thicker biceps - triceps - delts -Â
You'd entertained yourself in biting the defined muscles time and time again behind closed doors, layering them with hickey after hickey which had Arthur's coach - your dad - telling him that "Whoever's giving you these needs to stop - you're only giving your opponent weak spots for them to target!"Â
Arthur took great pleasure in knowing that his only weak spot was actually his coach's daughter - you - whenever you looked up at Arthur with those big eyes, batting your lashes and speaking with hushed tones as you dabbed his forehead with antiseptic and put bandages over his wounds.
His lips were bruised - sore from the punches that he'd taken to the his face - and yet even when they were pressed against yours, aching and shooting pain down his nerves as his bodily reflexes told him to stop - Arthur really couldn't get enough of the feeling of you, as that pain become a dulcet daydream in the back of his mind whilst he lost himself in making love to you.
He was truly desperate for you.
And whilst Arthur had been gracious enough to stop the attack on your face, giving you a moment to mop the cut on his brow and cut the tape into small enough strips to act as temporary stitches on top of the wound, the blood that'd rushed South had Arthur fostering a sizeable boner which he was impatient with getting sorted. You realised that the hard way (no pun intended), as the boxer rocked his hips into you - the bulge within his shorts slotting between your thighs and letting the head stimulate your clothed clit (though it was only covered by a thin pair of thin, material shorts) and all down your slit, whilst he himself rocked himself back and forth - groaning at the stimulation of your soft thighs enclosed around his sensitive hard'on.
"You are shameless," You muttered as you allowed his hands to grapple at your hips needily, stabilising himself by pinning yours hips to the locker-room wall. He really was like an animal that was in some sort of insatiable heat, as he continued the gentle assault whilst you tried to wipe away the blood across his temple.Â
Your focus couldn't help but revert to the abs - glistening and tanned, still layered with a thin sheen of sweat that smelled of lust to you, and made you want to get on your knees and kiss over each and every abdominal muscle he'd worked so hard to foster within camp, before pulling off his shorts and taking him in your mouth whilst he ate you out.
You wanted to mark him up and have him in your mouth, your pussy, finishing on you, in you, for you and with you - and yet you had to groan and nestle your head into the crook of his neck to not escalate the situation and have him balls deep inside of you when you knew your Dad was in the next room - waiting for him to come out, bandaged and clean after having finished with you - the resident first-aider on duty.
"Hurry up, Arthur, they're getting these trophies ready - you need to come out and collect yours for the presentation!" Your Dad's voice called out from the next room, fist slamming against the door as a warning to hurry up.Â
Arthur huffed from besides you. "Have I ever told you how much I hate your Dad?"
"Yep, every time he makes you do extra push-ups because he says you stare at me too much." You quipped, and again, Arthur just groaned and buried his head into the top of yours, smelling your fruity conditioner and vanilla body spray.Â
"ARTHUR! How much longer?!" Your Dad yelled once more, angrier this time.
"COMING, coming!" Arthur called out in response, having to withdraw and tuck himself into the shorts he wore to disguise any signs of arousal when he received his trophy.
Although before Arthur could leave you - his hands still attached to your hips - he leant in, pressing his lips to your ears as his words came out a husky whisper, almost growl from the way he was so needy for you:
"You know where my dorm is, I swear to fuck if I don't find you there tonight I'm gonna make sure you can't walk for the next week."
And whilst you would've loved to have frustrated the man and have him brutally fucking you to fulfil his promise - you were of course waiting on Arthur's bed when he got back to his Uni dorm, wearing one of his workout tops that was well oversized on your frame, and wearing absolutely nothing underneath.

LOVE THAT BURNS MASTERLIST
< previous chapter
Word Count:Â 3,090ish
Summary:Â You and Logan fight to save Mariko.
Warnings:Â wounds, fighting, near death experiences
Notes:Â I have loved all the reactions I've received! Please keep them coming. They all mean so much to me! This is the last chapter before we start on the two different endings! Ending 1 will come out before ending 2. Also, before the ending 1 starts coming out, I'm going to post the one-shot for this series about their everyday lives from the ten year gap.
Reminder:Â IÂ DO NOTÂ do taglists. Please donât ask. Please follow and interact! I appreciate any reblogs, likes, comments, and asks!Â
You gasped as you woke up naked on the medical bed you had died on. Looking around, you could tell that you were alone. Meaning that Logan had followed through with going to save Mariko, which was what you had asked of him. You were honestly surprised that you had risen from the dead again, but you couldn't waste any more time. You needed to get to Logan.
You quickly found some clothes to wear and the location of Yashidaâs birthplace. Thankfully, rich people always had a few cars lying around, and you were off. Racing to get to Logan before he did anything incredibly stupid.
~~~
Loganâs anger was fueling him forward. He needed to rescue Mariko and finish off Dr. Green. He needed to get his revenge for you. When Logan arrived at the town, he was met with Harada, waiting in the streets for him. Logan could sense that there were others nearby, hiding in the shadows.
âI see youâve come to fight,â Harada stated, coming towards Logan. âItâs pointless. Youâre outnumbered. The Black Clan has protected the House of Yashida for 700 years.â
The Black Clan began emerging from the shadows, from the alleys and the rooftops.
âIs that all the men you brought?â Logan challenged. âIâm going to get to Mariko.â
âWe are grateful for your protection of Mariko. But there is one more sacrifice you must make for her family.â
âGo fuck yourself, pretty boy.â
Harada yelled, and the fighting began. It didnât take long for the other Black Clan members to jump down and join, with more continuing to appear on the rooftops. Hard ordered them to begin firing arrows as Logan started to run through the streets. Logan got halfway through town before the arrows began to have heavy wires attached. Logan grunted as he tried to continue on despite the resistance of the wires. He groaned as a poisoned arrow hit the middle of his back. His vision began to blur, but Logan continued to move forward. The Black Clan continued to shoot wired arrows into his back until Logan collapsed face-first into the snow.
~~~
You followed the tracks of a fight in the snow once you reached the town. Your heart clenched at the sight of the clear marks of someone being dragged. You knew it had to be Logan. You continued to follow the tracks, slipping into the large house on the hill. With your powers fully restored, it was easy to take down the Black Clan members in your way. Eventually, you reached the center of the building, revealing to be a large, open lab spanning the whole building.Â
Glancing down, you saw Logan locked up in some machine that kept his hands facing outward. You could see him moving slightly and groaning like he was waking up. With a sudden tug, you could see Logan trying to free himself. Slowly and quietly, you began to sneak down.
âStand back," Dr. Green ordered the nearby Black Clan members as she waltzed up. âThere is no need.â
âWhereâs Mariko?â Logan demanded. âWhere is she?â
âAre you pinning for someone who is not your wife? For shame. Where is your wife anyway?â Logan simply growled. âDid she not make it? Too weak?â
âShut the fuck up!â
Dr. Green smirked before looking away at the giant samurai nearby. âImpressive, no? He is made of adamantium, just like you.â Logan continued to try to break free. âOh, Logan, you know what, I get it. Youâre frustrated.âÂ
She pressed some buttons, moving the machine that Logan was stuck in forward. The machine pulled his arms forward, away from his body. Logan kept heaving breaths as the machine kept him still, drilling into him and inflicting pain.
âI know Mariko is here,â Logan panted. âI want to see her.â
"You want answers,â Dr. Green stated.
âYes, I want answers!â
âIâm sorry, I wish I could say more, but I was hired in part for my discretion.â Dr. Green leaned forward, up against the machine, taunting Logan.Â
âIâm sure you were."
âThat and a certain talent for combining biochemistry and metaphysics. High-grade toxins are my specialty. It helps to be genetically immune to every poison known to man, as I am. And immune to the toxin of man himself⊠as I am.â
âIâll tell you what, you twisted mutant bitch, why donât you open these bracelets, and we'll see whoâs made of what?â Logan released his claws. Almost as soon as he did, the machine clamped down further around his fists, preventing his claws from retracting.
âThe claws,â Dr. Green smiled. "Now we can begin. The suppressant bug you found inside of you and your wife was mine. You took it out on your own. I didnât see that coming. Did you take your wife's out, too? Is that why sheâs not here?â
âYou donât deserve to talk about her!â
âYou are strong. You have courage. Real courage. But that wonât help much now.â
The giant metal samurai ripped itself free from the wires it was connected to. It stomped over to Logan, going around him, before stopping in front. You arrived on the same floor they were on in time to see the giant samurai pull a huge sword out and line it up with Loganâs claws. Your eyes widened as you noticed the sword heat up as it lifted. You rushed over and threw yourself between Logan and the samurai.
âStop!â You shouted.Â
The samurai lost its concentration, hitting the back of the machine Logan was in, throwing you, Logan, and Dr. Green around while the samurai fell back. Logan grunted as he landed on his knees.
âY/N!â He yelled.
You looked up and over at him, shooting him a smile. âHey, handsome,â you breathed out. âMiss me?â
Logan opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, he noticed the samurai getting back up. Slamming the leftover wrist clamp against the stairs, it came clattering off. He ran over to you and grabbed your hand, tugging you up harshly to stumble against his chest. His lips quickly captured yours for a brief kiss.
âYou gotta stop doing that, sweetheart,â he whispered.Â
âGotta keep you on your toes somehow, honey,â you replied with a smirk.
He smirked back. âYouâre gonna be the death of me.â The samurai stomping closer caused Logan to start to drag you in the opposite direction. âRun! Go!â
You and Logan ran side-by-side. You noticed Dr. Green rushing to cut you off. You threw your hands out, launching her over the railing and down a few floors in a ball of flames. Harada and Mariko rushed out of a room a few floors up.
âGo!â Logan urged, waving them off. âRun!â
The two of you began running down the stairs. The giant samurai jumped down to the level you had reached. Logan let out a roar as he flung himself at the samurai, causing himself and the samurai to fall down a few levels.
âLogan!â You screamed, looking over the railing to see him squaring up with the samurai.Â
You spun around and tried to take the stairs two at a time to get to Logan. You could hear him groaning, straining to keep the samuraiâs sword still as he used his claws as a shield. You reached the floor in time to see the samurai pull out a second sword that was quickly heating up. Using the railing, you launched yourself onto the back of the samurai and took hold of the heated sword with one of your hands. You focused on heating the sword up further, causing it to begin to lose its shape. It dropped the melting sword and reached back. It grabbed you and threw you over the railing.
âY/N!â Logan roared.
You cried out in pain as you harshly landed a few floors down. You could hear Logan and the samurai fighting for a few moments before you heard a thud close by. Logan was quickly kneeling beside you, checking you over.
âAre you okay?â He asked, eyes still frantically searching you over. He carefully helped you sit up.
âHonestly, Iâm ready to go home,â you responded.
He let out a hearty chuckle. âMe, too, darling.â
The samurai dropped down onto the level the two of you were on. Logan pulled you up and dragged you over to the electrical boxes. Using his claws, he ruined the boxes, turning off most of the lights in the building. You and Logan quietly hid behind nearby posts as the samurai searched for the two of you. The samurai passed the two of you, allowing Logan to jump on its back and retrieve another sword it had.Â
âY/N!â Logan shouted.Â
He tossed you the sword, and you caught it. Holding it with both hands, you began to heat it up. The samurai spun around, kicking Logan down, allowing you to cut the head off the samurai. Logan launched himself at the samurai again, forcing him and the metal monster down to the bottom floor. The samurai slammed against the wall, breaking a hole into it that Logan was launched through.
âLogan!â You yelled.
You ran down the flights of stairs as Logan climbed back into the building. You dropped to your knees in front of him, the two of you quickly wrapping your arms around each other. In a blink of an eye, the samurai grabbed your ankles and tore you from Loganâs grasp.
âNo!â Logan shouted, hands barely brushing against your arms as youâre torn out of reach.
The samurai spun you around and grasped onto your hands. The metal clamped against your wrists, and three drills from each of the metal hands appeared and began drilling into your fists, right into your bones. You screamed out in pain.
âLet her go!â Logan demanded.
The middle of the samurai opened up to reveal Yashida.
âLogan-san,â he greeted. âDon't look so shocked. With you at my side, I survived Nagasaki. Surely, I could survive this.â You let out another scream as the drills pushed further into you. âItâs alright. It wonât take long.â
âWhat are you doing to her?!â Logan didn't know what move to make without hurting you.
âDr. Green and I have been waiting. Itâs only this armor that's kept me alive. We built it to make me strong so I can take what you would not give. And transfer your unwanted healing to my body. Itâs only by mere coincidence that your wife could also provide what you would not give. My legacy must be preserved. Your mistake was to believe that a life without end can have no meaning. It is the only life that can.â
Logan was watching as the life slowly drained from your body. You were growing older while Yashida was growing younger. He couldnât get his eyes to look away from you. He couldnât force himself to move.
âLogan!â Yukio shouted, throwing one of the large swords in his direction.
Logan caught it, gripping it with both hands, causing it to heat up. He stood up and, with a shout, threw the sword into Yashidaâs head. The metal hands retracted the drills and let you go. Logan caught you before you could collapse onto the ground. Yashida stumbled back, gasping for breath, before falling out of the building to his death.
âSweetheart,â Logan shook you, trying to get you to gain consciousness. âWake up⊠I really canât handle this again⊠I need you to wake up.â Yukio slowly came over, watching the scene. âCome on, honey.âÂ
The only hope Logan had was the fact that you were still breathing. You had to wake up. Yukio placed a hand on Loganâs shoulder.
âWe need to get her some medical attention,â Yukio said.
Logan nodded, hoisting you further up into his arms before standing up. Yukio led the way out, where Mariko and Harada were waiting safely.
âLogan! Y/N!â Mariko exclaimed, rushing towards Logan. âOh my gosh!â Mariko looked you over, immediately seeing your increase in age. âWe need to get her to a hospital.â
âNo,â Logan pulled you closer. âToo dangerous.â
âLogan, I have my grandfatherâs business under my control. I have resources. The two of you have helped me so much. Please let me return the favor.â
âMariko can help,â Harada agreed.
Logan scoffed. âNot really caring for your word right now, bub,â he muttered.
âTrust me,â Mariko pressed. âI wonât let any happen to either of you anymore.â
~~~
Logan snarled at anyone who tried to pry you from his arms the moment Mariko had the group escorted to a private wing of a nearby hospital. Yukio and Mariko had to work together to coax him into setting you on the bed. He insisted on staying near you the entire time.Â
The doctor Mariko had called in specialized in mutants, giving Logan hope and making him even more cautious. Loganâs eyes created a rotation going from your rising chest, your face, to the monitors and back. He wanted to know everything and not miss a second of anything. He stood on the edge of every room you were brought into, like a constant guarding shadow. Mariko and Yukio took turns trying to get Logan to rest, but he couldnât leave you.
It took a few hours for the doctor to get any results from the tests they had run. The doctor informed the group that you were slowly healing and de-aging. They said that youâd be fine in a day or two and would most likely sleep the entire time. The doctor encouraged the group to keep you there until you woke up, and Logan reluctantly agreed.Â
âThere's one other thing,â the doctor added, after updating the group. âI talked to Dr. McCoy on the phone, and he informed me of the incident that happened ten years ago when Y/N returned from the dead like a Phoenix.â
âWhat about it?â Logan asked.Â
âWas that the only time?â
âNo. She did it about a day ago.â
âThat would explain what we saw in the blood we took.â
Logan took a protective step closer. âWhat did you see, doc?â
âMr. Howlett, your wife is a powerful mutant, but when she rises from the dead like that, it sucks away at some of her abilities. The tests we ran and compared to previous tests that Dr. McCoy had run, show that her mutation is slowly decaying.â
âAre you saying that sheâs dying?â
âNot exactly. She could still live another hundred years as long as she is careful. The more she rises from the dead, the faster her mutation will decay, meaning the fasterââ
âSheâll die⊠Can she use the other parts of her mutant?â
âOf course. But I would be wary of bringing her into any more life-threatening situations. I have sent our findings to Dr. McCoy for his records, and so that he can keep track of Y/N himself.â
Logan clenched his jaw as he stared at you, processing the information. Mariko stepped forward and placed a hand on Loganâs back.
âThank you, Doctor,â Mariko said.
âOf course,â the doctor replied. âIâll be around if thereâs anything you need.âÂ
The doctor left as Logan walked over to your bedside. You were slowly returning to the woman he knew. But, even if you hadnât, Logan would have loved you anyway.
âI need to take her home,â Logan murmured.
âIâll have the plane ready for as soon as she wakes,â Mariko said.
âNo,â Logan shook his head. âI need to get her home now.â
âLoganââ
âI appreciate what youâve done. But itâs my duty to take care of her and the best way I can manage that is at home.â
âIf youâre sure.â Logan nodded, causing Mariko to sigh. âIâll go make the calls.â
Mariko left to go to as she said. Logan gently took your hand and lifted it up, pressing a kiss to the back of it.
âWeâre going home, sweetheart,â Logan whispered. âAnd weâll never leave again.â
~~~
You needed to move, but you were trapped. The familiar weight of Loganâs arms around your waist was comforting, with his head resting on your shoulder. But you felt like you hadnât moved in days; your muscles were stiff. As you slowly opened your eyes, you quickly realized that you were no longer in Japan. You were home. Loganâs head was on your shoulder, with his arms around you, keeping you against his bare chest. You lifted your arm and began scratching Loganâs arm. He groaned as he began to wake.
âSweetheart?â He mumbled into your neck.
âItâs me,â you whispered.
Loganâs head lifted to fully look at you as his arms tightened around you. âYou have to stop worrying me⊠I canât take anymore.â
âI'm sorry. Iâll try hard not to.â Logan leaned down and kissed you softly. âWhen did we get home?â
âLast night. The doctor cleared you, and I wanted you home.â
You reached up and cupped Loganâs cheek. You could tell that the concern was still lingering. âIâm sorry I scared you.â
âI know, darling.â Logan grabbed your wrist and turned his head to kiss the palm of his hand. âThereâs something I need to tell you.â
Logan then explained what the doctor had found out about your ability to rise from the dead. You could feel Logan trembling as he spoke, like he was finally letting all his concerns out. Once he was finished, you pulled him to lay on top of you. Logan was careful not to fully put his whole weight on you but appreciated you holding him.
âIâm not going anywhere,â you quietly promised Logan.
âNo more danger,â Logan muttered. âNo more missions.â He pulled back enough to allow your eyes to meet. âI need you safe. I need you here.â
âI wonât promise that unless you can promise the same thing⊠I can't lose you either.â
âIâm not the one with the habit of dying.â
âI promise I don't try to.â
âI know, sweetheart⊠Alright, no missions. No danger. For either of us.â He leaned down and gave you a brief kiss. âI never asked, how are you feeling?â
You smiled up at him. âIâm fine.â
âYou sure?â
âIâll let you know if it changes, okay?â
âOkay.â
âI do have one thing, though.â
âAnything.â
âCan we stay in bed all day?â
Logan gave a hardy laugh as he wrapped you in his arms and rolled over so you were on top of him. âSounds like a plan, sweetheart.â

Medical Emergency
âMedical Emergency, Navigation 4, Medical Emergency, Navigation 4.â
The message repeated over and over across the PA system of the Leviathan Class exploratory ship. A massive space fairing vessel dedicated to finding the edge of creation and everything in between the Galactic Edge was a marvel of multi-species engineering.
Fifteen different habitats built to within micro-specifications for the species they were meant to hold, seven multi species common areas built to accommodate every race on board. Enough FTL drives to be able to be fired in succession so when one batch went down another could be brought online so they didnât even have to stop for a cool down period between jumps. Recycling processes efficient within .0001% allowing near as possible full self-sustainability for an indefinite amount of time.
The main drawback of such a marvel of galactic traversal being of courseâŠthe FUCKING sizeâŠlarger than some moons, a population numbering more than some planets (or at least it felt that way) and yet somehow never enough personnel in the right places at the right times.
âOf course the emergency is right inside the border of my territory, because why wouldnât it be? And of course, it had to be JUST as I was about to go off shift.â Thought MD1 Joseph Jarl, JJ to anyone who wanted to continue a comfortable existence, after all no one knew how best to take someone apart than the ones who had to put others back together.
Running at full human speed JJ flew down the various passages dodging, spinning, ducking and jumping around the many obstacles in his way with all the predatory grace humans were gifted with.
âHa! and mom always said it was a waste for a doctor to learn parkour.âÂ
Sliding on one hip beneath the centaur like body of a Gravelin engineer and popping back up to a full run JJ jumped and thrust one foot out to run alongside a bulkhead when he came to a T-section of corridor, narrowly missing the heads of a group of Ranki environmental scientists as he fell from the wall and rolled to maintain momentum.
Slamming a hand to the Medical Bypass Badge on his chest, signaling the door immediately in front of him to open JJ slid to a stop inside Nav.Bay 4 eyes flicking around the space looking for the emergency.
Sharp ocean blue eyes registered three different species, one of which still tensed when in direct line of sight of his forward-facing predatory gaze. Attention landing on a group of navigators clustered in a small huddle JJ slung the med-pack off his back and approached the group.
Head held high, shoulders wide and a purpose in his stride JJ projected every ounce of authority he could dredge up from his years as a medical professional he could when he ordered the group to back up and give him some space to work with. Approaching the center of the group JJ noticed the Elental on the floor, curled into a ball and rocking back and forth while making small pathetic whining sounds while very obviously having a hard time breathing.
Dropping to one knee in front of the one species on board that most closely resembled a human JJ slowly reached out and rested a hand on the Elentalâs shoulder. Being a species that stood on average around 6.5-7 feet tall he barely had to reach to grasp the rocking figureâs shoulder.
Elental were a bipedal race with nearly translucent skin in direct light, long sharply pointed ears, eyes that stretched from the bridge of a dual slit nose to where the temple would be on a human with three pupils each, mostly human proportioned faces and a universally slender build.
It was a very little-known fact but the first time the human council met an Elental the lead diplomat was in fact recorded on official record as having muttered the phrase âFuck me we found Space Elvesâ⊠though the actual audio recording of this moment was very deeply buried beneath as much galactic red tape as was possible. Noticing there was no response to his touch JJ turned to the closest navigator and asked for any details on the medical emergency.
âWe donât really know Human JJ, he was trying to determine some FTL jump coordinates and the timing required to make them when he started shaking and his speech became rapid and somewhat slurred, he began shaking and clutching his, well it would be the stomach on you, but his main pulmonary area and his respiration began to rapidly increase. When he tried to walk away from his station he collapsed and that was when we called the emergency, is he sick?â The Fenra asked nervously after the quick report on what happened.
JJ would never admit it but seeing a three-foot alien that looked like were-shitzu nervous and scared was absolutely adorable.
âI donât think so noâŠhold on,â Quickly determining that there was no external injuries JJ tried raising the Elentalâs head to look into his face but his patient seemed to be in a stubborn mood.
Taking a chance JJ reached into his pocket and pulled out a simple twentieth century zippo, an antique passed down in his family that he kept in working condition and never went anywhere without.
Flicking it open with a sharp, practiced snap JJ kept the grin off his face when the Elentalâs gaze snapped up at the sudden sound. With a flick of his thumb JJ lit the lighter and held it directly between his eyes. The Elentalâs six pupils swiveled and in a rather disconcerting motionâŠfused into a single large pupil for each eye the size of an Old Earth quarter, totally focused on the flame a mere six inches away.
âWhat is your name?â JJ asked slowly, in a deep and calm voice that witnesses would later report had a strange resonance to it.
âE-e-ekarielâ The Elental responded with a slight stutter, eyes locked on the tiny flame as JJ slowly began to move it back and forth.
âListen to my voice Ekariel, listen to nothing but my voice, focus on the sound of my words and know nothing but my wordsâŠWhat do you feel Ekariel, what is beneath you right now?â This question spoken in the same deep resonating voice.
âTell me what is in the now, what is beneath you at this very moment.â
âDeck plates.â The answer came out in a somewhat hurried response.
âDescribe the deck plates Ekariel, what are they made of?â The flame moved slowly from left to right and back again, never going further than the outer reaches of the humanâs own eyesâŠleft eye, right eye back to left and repeat.
âCold, metal, textured in small waves, rigid.â Ekariels voice came slightly stronger, less breathless and wheezing.
âWhat do you see Ekariel, describe what your eyes are telling you.â
âFire, small flame, glittering eyes, blue stars and black holes.â
âWhat do you smell Ekariel, describe what you smell in the immediate area around you?â JJ asked as he pitched his voice slightly lower and slowed the waving of the lighter marginally.
âFour speciesâŠMusk, fur, waterâŠOtorian species fresh from the hydrosphereâŠDust, heat, insectsâŠLidarians recently from the arid habitatsâŠmold, plant decay, rainâŠJaguras from the forest domeâŠpheromones, sweat, spice, disinfectantâŠhuman recently in the medical bay.â Ekariels breathing slowed and stabilized as he spoke, voice gaining slightly more strength.
âWhat do you hear Ekariel, tell me what sounds you hear in this moment.â The flame now slowly traversed from one pupil to the other, no faster than before but slowly closing in on the middle of the humanâs face.
âTyping, I can hear digits impacting sensor boards to the rightâŠscratching, someone is writing equations long hand for accuracy checks near the forward portion of the bayâŠbreathing, so many breathing patterns.â The Elentalâs eyes never wavered from the flame, slowly tracking it back and forth, voice becoming stronger, limbs no longer shaking as bad though still quivering slightly.
âFocus on the breathing Ekariel.â
Now the flame only traversed from the inner corner of JJâs eyes, never moving faster or slower, JJâs voice becoming slightly deeper, seeming to hum and resonate more from his chest than his throat or mouth.
âListen to the breaths around you, feel the air move as it is taken in and expelledâŠsmell the breaths of those around you, those who would look after youâŠnow slowly block them outâŠblock out all the breaths but your ownâŠtell me about your breaths Ekariel.â The lighter now barely moved past the outer edges of JJâs nose.
âThree respiratory voidsâŠexpanding and filtering contaminants from the airâŠnutrients being stripped from the atmosphere into the blood streamâŠcollapsing and expelling by-products of respirationâŠoxygen, nitrogen, helium being removed from the system via respirationâŠâ Ekarielâs voice now had an almost sleeping dream like quality to it, low and slow.
âTell me about the heartbeats EkarielâŠhow many do you feel?â The flame was still now, directly between JJâs eyes, the focused and unblinking eyes of a predator staring directly into Ekarielâs own dilated pupils.
âI can only feel one heart beatâŠI can only feel my own heart.â
âCome back to us EkarielâŠfocus on my voice and with every beat of your heart come back to usâŠwith every beat, shed the fear that imprisoned you and follow my voice.â JJ slowly began to back away from Ekariel as spoke, incrementally rolling onto his haunches as the Elental followed the flame.
Slowly JJ closed the lid to his antique lighter snuffing the flame. As if waking from a deep sleep Ekariel blinked and shook his head, pupils splitting back into two sets of three and eyes widening.
âEasy, easy, Ekariel⊠focus on the now, sight, smell, touch, hearing focus on those. Come on lad breath inâŠoutâŠinâŠout, there you go, no donât get upâŠlay down and focus, gather your thoughts.â JJ slowly eased the Elantel down fully onto the deck plates and raised his reverse jointed knees as best he could.
âEkariel I need you to listen to me, listen to my voiceâŠare you listening?â Ekariel nodded his head, looking up a JJ with a slightly dazed look on his face.
âYou had a panic attack E.K. logs show you havenât had a sufficient rest period for three cycles and in that time your nutritional intake has sharply declined. You are suffering from lack of rest and negligence of sustenance. As such I am removing you from the duty roster for the next four cycles and requiring you to report to the Galley Watch for every normal meal time where you will eat AT A MINIMUM a full standard meal of no less than one and a half again the daily nutritional requirement for at least two cycles. You are barred from any areas or activities relating to the navigation or piloting of this vesselâŠbasically you are going to take the next four cycles to eat food, sleep, relax and either work on or find a hobby.â JJ finished with a small smile at the oddly shell-shocked look on Ekarielâs face.
================================================
After having received JJâs report on the medical emergency and that Ekariel would be fine with a few cycles of rest and full meals the captain instigated a mandatory rotation of extended rest periods lasting at least three cycles unless otherwise noted by a Corpsman.
On paper the decision was to help the training and cross training of individuals by exposing them to a variety of new positions for longer periods of time and to potentially familiarize more of the crew with the inner workings of other departments and areas of the ship. In reality it was so the entire crew could have a chance to catch their breath and actually enjoy it before being thrown back into high stress situations, they were going to be on this ship for quite a long time after all, no need to have them burn themselves out so early in the voyage.

@caemthe said (inbox):
When he heard that the Ghost Hounds' base was affected during a TD outbreak, he didn't have to think it twice before discussing the matter with administration and then sending two vehicles full of food rations and medics to the location to tend to the injured. He obviously went as well. The Ghost Hounds had been a great aid to the Midnight Rangers, especially with the more frequent TD attacks. If not for them, perhaps there would be more families going to Knell Square to pay their respects. So, even though the mercenary group affiliation to Jinzhou is a temporary one, it's near impossible to not see them as part of the city, just like all other citizens. "You'll have to forgive me for the delay, I came as soon as I was informed of the situation," was the first thing the general said upon arriving. He looked around, glad that the crisis was under control now, but there still was much that needed to be done. "You look close to overclocking, please take a seat, so I can treat you."
THE SITUATION AT THE base was now firmly under control, although the groans of pain from the wounded still lingered all the same. TD outbreaks came out of nowhere, and despite how he and his people were well used to situations like this considering these were a norm where they came from, one could never completely prepare for them when they did transpire. âStatus report,â he spoke to one of his medics, gaze cold and tone just as frigid, nevertheless the older man was not the least bit deterred by this. Rather, they made to pull bloodied gloves from their hands, tossing them in a nearby wastebin before speaking.
   âThere were a few casualties, but the death count is rather low.â
   âHow many?â
   âTen.â
   Ten was still too many in his opinion, even if ten was indeed a low number from a logistical standpoint. Still, how unfortunate it all was. He said nothing, eyes narrowing slightly as he gazed upon the agonized breathing of one of his Ghost Hounds. The medicine they were given hadnât settled yet, granted that he knew eventually they would either pass out from the pain or because those pills were quickly working through their system. There werenât enough medics to tend to everyoneâs hurts, but no doubt word had reached the Jinzhou about the situation. For all he knew, they were already on their way here. Turning away, he had just stepped out of the medical ward when the approach of vehicles caught his full attention. He need but offer a single glance at them to know where they were from. Though he shouldnât be surprised to see that assistance had arrived, at the same time, he couldnât help but feel this all the same.
   Mercenaries were disposable bodies. This was a cold truth they all knew. If any of them died out there on a battlefield, theyâd just be another corpse for the vultures. As such, aid like this wasâŠpeculiar to him. Why waste resources on outsiders that were merely hired hands? That was a question he would have asked himself had he still been new to how things worked around here. However, after staying within Jinzhou for as long as he had, he had come to learn that the people were justâŠlikeâŠthis.
   It made no sense, really.
   Jiyan, even more so.
   âYour arrival is appreciated. My medics are a bit overworked at the moment, so they would be glad for the offered help.â His gaze slid from the General to the trucks, watching as food and supplies were already being unloaded with a speed he found rather impressive. Jiyanâs voice tugged his attention back before it lingered elsewhere for too long, his expression unreadable as he met with that unwavering gaze before a small, quiet sigh managed to slip from him. This was wholly unnecessary considering he has been on the brink many a time, but he knew there was little point in attempting to shoo the other away when he knew they would only stand firmer. Thus, without another word, he made his way over to a crate, taking a seat as was asked of him.

Will Halstead (Ft Platonic! Jay Halstead): I'll Call WillÂ
This was supposed to be short! Why canât I ever just write a page or two? Oh well- I like how it turned out. I have no medical knowledge and I made shit up.
This is like my People We Love story reversed regarding it being more Platonic Jay x reader than Will x reader. Â
You shift and feel Jayâs eyes shoot to you. He had been eyeing you like a bomb that was about to explode since he got to your and Willâs apartment two hours ago. You were trying to ignore him and his detective's gaze, but it was starting to get irritating. âYou know if you keep it up, Iâm going to take your fun uncle shirt and replace it with a worry wart one.âÂ
âYouâve been having cramps off and on since I got here, and you donât look like you feel good.â You roll your eyes at your brother-in-law affectionately. Shooting him an amused look from across the couch and resting your hand on your prominent baby bump.Â
âIt must be that glow everyone talks about. I'm almost seven months pregnant, Jay. Braxton Hicks is normal.â What you donât want to tell him as they had been becoming increasingly more uncomfortable. You hadnât gotten off the couch since he got here because you felt lightheaded with a side of vertigo. âI went to the OB last week for an appointment. They said everything was just fine. No problems, no restrictions.â You tell him and remind yourself. Â
You were trying to take the pregnancy in stride. People had babies in fields for years but it didnât mean you didnât get nervous sometimes. You had never been pregnant before and didnât know what to expect and you had learned the hard way that Will was not the one to ask. He was a wealth of information. Too much information. It often made your anxiety worse after talking to him rather than better. He had too many horror stories from the ED. Â
Jay looked unconvinced but dropped the subject and went back to watching the trashy TV show you had turned on. The two of you watched another episode and a half with rounds of minor cramping on your part. The commercial was just ending when a cramp so painful jolted through your belly that it made you grab at it and whimper. When you blink Jay is in front of you. He looks angry but you have known him long enough to know it was actually worry clouding his features. âOkay thatâs it we are going to the hospital.âÂ
âJay, I donât think-â He doesnât even let you finish your thought.Â
âYou either let me take you to the hospital right now or Iâll call Will.â You search Jayâs eyes. âYour choice.â He is clearly over it and reaches for his cell. You can just imagine your husband after a call like that. He would leave work and speed home in a mad dash to get to you. You would feel so bad if he did all that for a few Braxton Hick contractions. Â Â
âOkay! Okay, fine, letâs go.â Jay wastes no getting you to your feet and out of the apartment steering you to his car. âJust what the world needed another Doctor Halstead, Will will be so proud.â You tell him before Jay rolls his eyes and closes the car door.Â
You sit in the hospital bed waiting for the OB to come back.  Your doctor was out today and the woman that came in was all warm smiles and a reassuring tone. She must have been new because you didnât recognize her or her name. âIt looks like the cramping is just Braxton Hicks. Itâs completely normal and nothing to worry about.â You looked over at Jay who had been lurking near the bed with his arms crossed over his chest.Â
âWhat? It was better to get you checked out just in case.â Jayâs tone is defensive, and you roll your eyes lovingly at your brother-in-law. The OB smiled at him and patted him comfortingly on the arm.Â
âIt is a good thing that he brought you in.â You look at the woman in surprise because her tone goes serious. âYour blood pressure is much higher than I would like. Have you been under more stress than normal lately?â You sigh as you begrudgingly tell her about your increased workload. âHave you been feeling more fatigued than normal? Lightheaded, dizzy, or any vertigo?â Â
âIâm almost seven months pregnant, isnât feeling off kind of normal?â You put your hand on your rounded stomach protectively.Â
âIt can be but with your blood pressure being so high itâs concerning. Iâm going to order a blood panel just to be on the safe side. Now, letâs take a peek at this baby.â The ultrasound is all normal. the OB points out your baby's face and hand. You look over at Jay who is watching the screen in awe. He had seen the pictures, but this was a new experience. He breathed a quiet wow as the quick heartbeat of the baby filled the room. âIt all looks good. It shouldnât take long for that panel then you will be good to go.âÂ
A familiar nurse that you canât name comes in and draws your blood. âMaybe I should message Will and let him know we are here.â Jay pulls his phone out of his pocket and begins typing.Â
âWhy so he can wait with us? He is working- leave him alone. Besides that was our deal, wasnât it? There isnât an emergency.â Jay holds his hands up in surrender. âAnd will you sit down please- your pacing is driving me crazy.â Jay flops into the chair giving you a âhappy nowâ look. âGeez, itâs like having a real brother.âÂ
âYeah, and you're stuck with me. You and that bean, you got growing.âÂ
You smile caressing your stomach, âIâm good with that.â As much as you had fought him on it, it was nice to know that he cared enough to drag you to the hospital. Jay was protective and you knew he was going to be a lot more than just the fun uncle who only stopped by when he felt like treating your kid to a good time. âCan I ask you something?â At his nod, you continued, âWhy were you at my apartment at 2 in the afternoon on a day you knew Will worked a double? Did Will ask you to check up on me?âÂ
âNo,â You gave him a look of disbelief, âNo, really, he didnât. He didnât ask me to come over or anything like that. He just mentioned that he thought you may not have been feeling good the last few days. So, I just wanted to make sure that you were- Are you crying?â Â
You were. Â
You had big crocodile tears running down your cheeks, âItâs the hormones. And honestly, that is just the sweetest thing Iâve ever heard.â More tears streamed down your face and Jay looked uncertain of what to do. When he saw a strategically placed tissue box, he grabbed it and held it out to you. You grabbed a few and started dabbing at your eyes. Your own family hadnât been part of your life much since you had moved to Chicago. Not that they had been very good to you throughout your childhood into your twenties. You felt like you looked out for them more than they ever would for you. âI hope you know that I appreciate you and Iâm so glad you are going to be in this baby's life. I love you, Jay.â He looked a little miffed but flattered as he rubbed your back soothingly. Â
âOf course, I love you too.âÂ
You had gathered your raging emotions by the time the OB had returned. âAlright, everything looks good. Iâm not going to put you on bed rest, but I highly encourage you to take it easy for the next few days.â You thank her and swing your legs over the bed to start the process of getting up, which is much harder now with a protruding belly. The woman paused in the doorway before turning and taking another step back into the room. You and Jay both look at her. âYou know, another good natural way to get your blood pressure down is by having sex. I donât see any problems with you having sexual activity right now. And with the looker you got- I would take every opportunity you get before the baby is the one keeping you up at night.â The doctor gives you a knowing wink before exiting the room.Â
You look over to see a mortified Jay. His eyes were closed tightly, and he brought his hand to scrub down the bottom half of his face. The woman had barely made it out the door when you started laughing uncontrollably. When Will walked into the room less than a minute later and looked at you in bemusement as you tried to catch your breath. âEverything okay?âÂ
You immediately sober, âI told you not to bother him!â Will walked over to your bedside and helped you shuffle off the bed. His hand came to rest in its now familiar place on your stomach. Â
âHe didnât, Maggie saw your name on some bloodwork. Are you okay? Everything okay with the baby?â Willâs face was furrowed with concern. You put your hand over his stroking your thumb across his knuckles. Â
âEverything is fine. I had some cramping and Jay took me in to be on the safe side. It was just Braxton Hicks.â Some of the tension left Will but you can tell he is still on alert. âMy blood pressure is a little high. But donât worry, the doc thinks it is just from stress. She told me I should take it easy for a few days and gave me a few...natural ways to bring it down.â Will furrowed his brow trying to think of what you could be referring to. Then he turned when he heard Jay cough and mutter something under his breath. Will looked between the two of you knowing he had missed something. Â
You give him a soft smile, âIâll explain later. But really, don't worry, okay. Iâm just going to spend the day on the couch watching Love is Blind. Taking it easy and relaxing, just like she said.â You push up on your toes and oblige you by leaning down for a kiss. âNow, I really have to go to the bathroom.â You say as you make a beeline for the public bathroom down the hall. Â
âIs she really, okay? It must have been pretty bad for her to feel like she needed to call you.â Will looked even more worried after you left the room. Jay rested his hand on his shoulder to comfort his older brother. He knew that Will had been trying his hardest to keep all of his own worry as a doctor from bleeding into you. He had been trying hard to do everything at your pace and not overstep the line of future dad to doctor. It hadnât always been a struggle he won. It didnât help that you hated hospitals and felt like less was more when it came to OB appointments. You had a tendency to cancel and never reschedule them much to his frustration. Â
âSheâs okay. I was actually already over there. She started getting some cramping and I kind of forced her to come here to get checked out.â A guilty look crossed Jay's face.Â
âForced her?â Will found that hard to believe. It was like pulling teeth to force you into doing anything. You had a stubborn streak to match the Halstead clan.Â
âWell, more of an ultimatum really. I told her she could either agree to come in or I'd call you.â Â
Will hummed in understanding, that sounded way more plausible. âYou were already over there? I thought I told you I was working a double.âÂ
âYou did.â Jay agreed, âYou also told me she had been feeling well.â Â
The gratitude that Will felt for his brother at that moment was overwhelming. âThanks, man. Iâm glad you were there. It means a lot.âÂ
âYou would have done the same for me,â Jay stated simply, âBesides that what you do for family.â He sighed heavily, âThatâs why after I buy her the pizza she has been talking about for the last hour, Iâm going to sit down on the couch with her and watch that trash she calls TV. Iâll make sure she is all good until you get home.âÂ

"I'm not giving up on you!"
Leonard McCoy X Reader
Summary: Following a terrible attack on the Enterprise, Dr. McCoy does everything he can to save the heavily-injured reader.
Character(s): Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Warning(s): Wounds, Death, Implied violence, Ends in fluff
Dr. McCoy carefully navigated the sea of bodies, careful not to step on any one of them. The Enterprise had been boarded little more than thirty minutes ago. Bones followed the path of destruction, hoping to find some survivors. No such luck.
McCoy scanned every body for signs of life, but yielded no results. He grimaced and trudged onward. He hated this feeling of powerlessness. So many good people were dead and there was nothing he could do about it. If only he had gotten down here sooner, maybe there wouldn't be so many casualties.
Leonard rounded a corner and was disappointed to find even more bodies strewn all over the floor. But amidst the flashing red lights, he saw you. You were leaned against the wall, blood staining your blue uniform. His tricorder picked up your heartbeat and he immediately hurried to your side.
"Hey, can you hear me?" He asked, snapping his fingers near your ear. Much to his surprise, you slowly opened your eyes.
He couldn't believe you were alive, let alone conscious. Your arm was a mangled mess of burns, you had a massive laceration in your lower abdomen, you were sitting in a pool of your own blood, and you had a terrible concussion. Your groan came out as more of a choked gurgle.
Leonard wasted no time in prepping a hypo to ease your pain. "Can you speak?"
"Yeah," You managed weakly.
"That's good. That's really good. Can you tell me where it hurts?" He asked.
"It hurts everywhere," you murmured.
"Perfect."
"Perfect?" You asked.
"It means you still have feeling in your limbs. That's a really good sign," Bones jabbed the hypo into your arm and started digging into his bag. He had to get you stable if you were going to have any hope of surviving this. "I'm Dr. Leonard McCoy. Can you tell me your name darlin'?" He asked, trying to ease you into a sense of calm.
"Ensign Y/N Y/L/N. Biology department."
"On, I know about you, you're the one who wrote that dissertation on the possible medical uses of Aldebaran Serpent venom. You graduated top of your class in the starfleet academy. I heard you've got a promotion coming up." Leonard said, hoping to keep your mind alert. He didn't want you passing out with that concussion, not until he was sure there wasn't some internal bleeding going on that his scanners weren't picking up.
"Yeah, if I make it that far..."
"You're gonna make it, trust me." He swallowed. You could see it in his face. The chances of you living weren't very high.
"You're a terrible liar doctor McCoy...I'm gonna die here, aren't I?" You whispered.
"I brought the captain back from the dead using the blood of a homicidal maniac. I've performed greater miracles than this. You ain't gonna die, not if I have anything to say about it." He said, already working to disinfect the gaping wound in your stomach. "Just keep talking to me, can you do that?"
"I'll try..." You struggled to keep your eyes open. "I-I... I smell something burning..."
"Don't worry about that." Leonard said firmly. "Just...tell me about..." He grasped for a topic that wasn't your maimed body or the smell of burning hair. "Tell me about home. What's your family like?" Leonard started to autosuture the laceration.
You ignored his question and tilted your head down to look down at the damage. Bones grabbed your face and forced your eyes up to his. "Don't look at it. Just look at me, okay?"
"Mkay...nice face at least." You smiled weakly.
"Oh?" he got back to his work, but kept talking. "I've always been told I got a face only a mother could love. What's so nice about it?" He asked.
"You have pretty eyes... and..." You lost your train of thought.
"And what darlin'?"
"Huh?"
"I got pretty eyes and what?" he asked, fighting against the knot appearing in the pit of his stomach. He didn't know you, but he'd like to. You were a tough cookie and he respected the hell out of it. He could see it in your eyes. You still had so much to offer the world... the universe. He couldn't let you die like this. He wouldn't let you die like this.
"Oh...I like your...your forehead wrinkles...makes you look distinguished," you attempted another smile.
"Gotta say sweetheart, that might just be the nicest compliment I've ever received." Leonard met your gaze for just a moment before returning to his task.
"Well, I've got more where that came from..." You leaned your head against the wall and looked at the ceiling. "...Might throw up..."
"If you feel like you are, just tell me. Okay darlin'?"
"Mkay..."
You both fell into silence and Leonard labored to think of some way to get you talking again. The autosuture wasn't working fast enough for his liking. He still had about two and a half inches to go. If he didn't work fast enough, you were gonna die.
"...Everything's all fuzzy. Cold." You murmured. A low rumble echoed through the halls as if punctuating your dark statement.
"I bet. You lost a lot of blood, but you'll be okay." Leonard clenched his jaw.
"There are others...gotta help the others McCoy. I'm a lost cause."
"You are no such thing. I'm saving you dammit." He didn't have the heart to tell you the other people in the hallway were already dead. A sudden, sharp jolt shook the ship. Leonard grunted as he tried not to fall into you.
"I'm gonna die... I never even got to ask out that doctor. Never had the guts..." You mumbled, eyes struggling to focus on anything.
"What doctor?" Leonard asked as he continued closing you up.
"Y'know. The grumpy one." You said.
Leonard's expression darkened. He was trying dammit, but not nearly hard enough. You were growing delirious. You didn't even realize what you were admitting to him. Your eyes fluttered closed, but you kept talking.
"I don't really know him, but he saved a friend of mine once... He's uh..." You gathered your thoughts. "He's real smart. So dedicated to his patients. I really admire that... Also got this dry sense of humor, and a really handsome voice. I wouldn't have minded taking him out sometime. Buying him flowers." You hummed.
"He's the kind of guy you bring home to mama, I think...Well...My mama at least." You looked at Leonard, eyes swimming with grief. "I'm not scared. You have to tell her for me. That I wasn't scared...I have people back at home. Can you tell them I love them?" You whispered, just as Leonard finished closing your abdominal wound.
Leonard breathed a sigh of relief as he started wrapping you with a bandage. "You're gonna tell them yourself darlin'. You're gonna make it, you know why? Because you're strong. Resilient as a rubber band." He tied off the bandage and started going to work on your arm. "I'm gonna get you stable and we'll get down to the medbay, then you'll make a swift and miraculous recovery, just in time for you to earn the rank of Lieutenant. How does that sound?"
"..." You didn't respond.
"Y/N?" He asked. Your eyes were closed. Your heartbeat was growing fainter by the second. "No No. Dammit, come on! I'm not giving up on you!" He emptied hypos into your arms and legs. A cocktail of medicines were brewing inside of you, fighting to keep your heart beating. He waited with baited breath for your readings to change on his tricorder.
Eventually, your heartbeat grew stronger and your breathing deeper. Then, to his astonishment, you opened your eyes again.
"Welcome back, you gave me a start there." Leonard flashed a relieved smile.
"Sorry...didn't mean to fall asleep," You smiled back.
Suddenly, the red lights turned off and the hallway lit up in its usual bright white light.
"I know darlin'. You're awake now, that's what matters." He pulled out his communicator. "Nurse Chapel, do they have the bastards detained?... Good. I need a stretcher on deck 15, as well as a recovery team. Prep the protoplaser and the burn chamber for the arrival of ensign Y/L/N." After her confirmation, he hung up and pointed his scanner down the hallway to see if there were any more heartbeats. Nothing.
Bones sighed and hung his head. The bastards were thorough, he had to give them that. He found only one survivor out of how many hallways? He was curious about how the security team managed to take them down, but that would be a conversation for a different time.
"Goddamned bloodthirsty space beasts..." He hissed.
"Tell me about it," you chuckled. "Certainly did a number on me, huh?"
"How are you feeling?" Leonard leaned against the wall beside you.
"Numb all over... I suspect you had something to do with that?" You turned your head to look at him.
"I injected you with a hypo for pain relief right when I found you." He met your eyes.
"Funny. I don't think I remember that."
"You're definitely on the loopy side. Can't tell if it's from the blood loss or an adverse reaction to the medicine, but we'll figure all that out soon."
"You can go now. Someone's coming to get me right?"
"You ain't getting rid of me that easily. I'm staying with you until your stretcher arrives." He crossed his arms.
"But there's got to be others that need help too, right?" You closed your eyes. "I'm fine, you should help them."
"It's against protocol to leave a critical patient alone. I'm not leaving until your ride arrives." Just then, he heard the sound of the hover-stretcher. "Speak of the devil, it's about goddamned time." He stood and addressed the two nurses. He spoke to them in hushed medical lingo. You had no idea what he was talking about, but it didn't sound good.
Leonard helped load you onto the stretcher. "I'm passing you off to Nurse Bell and Nurse Valinsky. They're going to take great care of you."
"As opposed to you taking bad care of me?" You smiled tiredly.
"Very funny," He smirked. "I'll catch up with you soon. Don't miss my face too much, you hear?"
"You're asking for the impossible, Dr. McCoy," You joked. The nurses guided you down the hall and around the corner. Leonard stared out at the crowded hallway, hoping his recovery team would arrive soon. Until then, he would just have to look for living patients on his own.
A doctor's work is never done.
~~~
When you awoke, you felt heavy. It was dim in the medbay and all was quiet, save for the occasional beeping of the biobed. You attempted to sit up, but winced the moment you put pressure on your arm. From the shoulder down, your limb was covered in bandages. You felt a deep ache all the way through your body and decided it was best to lay back down.
You tried to remember how you ended up here, but everything after the initial attack was a blur. You remembered the grumpy doctor, you remembered him mentioning your dissertation, he said something about pretty eyes, and you remember being so tired, but trying so hard to focus on him.
You looked around the room, hoping there might be a nurse nearby. Instead you found a room full of people sleeping in biobeds. There was a light on in the office at the end of the room, but you had no way of knowing if there was actually someone inside.
You scanned the controls to your left until you found a call button. Once you pressed it, you heard shuffling in the office. Much to your surprise, Dr. McCoy came shambling out.
"It's about time you woke up," Leonard took a look on your screen to check all your vitals. As you watched him, the events of your last encounter came flooding back. Distinguished forehead wrinkles? Seriously?
"Your heart-rate is kicking up," Bones smirked "Is that because of me?" He joked.
You rolled your eyes, "how long was I out?"
"About forty-eight hours."
"Two days?!"
"Better keep it down darlin'. Don't want to wake the neighbors." He slowly raised the bed into a sitting position and handed you some water.
"Thanks," you said hoarsely, "I didn't even realize I was thirsty."
"That's what I'm here for." He grunted as he copied some data from your biobed to his PADD.
"Bringing me water?"
"Keeping you from dying of dehydration," Bones corrected.
"Aw, and here I thought I had my own personal butler," you smiled and sipped your water. 'He really does have pretty eyes,' you thought while watching him work. Who were you kidding? It wasn't just his eyes that were pretty, it was all of him. You cleared your throat and took another sip. "Anyway, what are you doing here so late? I didn't think you worked gamma shift."
"I normally don't, but there are a lot of reports to file and not a lot of time to do it."
"That bad huh?...How many dead?" You asked softly.
"Fifty-six," Leonard sniffed pulled out his kit.
"Damn... and what about the pirates?"
"In custody back at Yorktown." Leonard administered a hypo into your arm. The soreness melted away almost immediately, but the ache in your chest didn't.
"I would have been one of them if it weren't for you..." You whispered. "You didn't give up... even when you should have."
"Any doctor worth his salt wouldn't give up on the likes of you, not when you were so keen on living. Ain't seen nothing like it in a long time. Your body just kept going long after it should have shut down." Bones explained, "And you kept telling me it was hopeless, but I could tell you were hoping for a miracle."
"So you gave me one," You smiled up at him.
"I told you I would. They don't say I have legendary hands for nothin'," McCoy smirked.
"Still, thank you for not giving up on me," you laughed. "I definitely owe you one."
"Ask out that doctor of yours and we'll call it even," Leonard spoke so casually, you nearly didn't register what it was he just said.
"I-I- my what?" You asked, dumbfounded. Your heart-rate picked up again and Leonard couldn't mask his amusement.
"You should get some rest, Nurse Chapel will be by in a few hours with some food for you. We're putting you on a soft food diet until your internal wounds heal some more. If you need anything before then, you know where the call button is." Bones started back to his office, but stopped just short.
"Oh, and Y/N?"
"Y-Yeah?"
Leonard sent you a smug look. "I like daisies," He said before disappearing behind the door.
You laughed and rested your head on your pillow. 'Daisies huh?' You thought to yourself. You weren't sure how you were gonna pull that off this far from Earth, but if Dr. McCoy could perform miracles, why couldn't you? Of course, the flowers would have to wait until you were released from medical care. You didn't mind too much though, Dr. McCoy was going to be there to take care of you.
And he wasn't giving up on you anytime soon.
(slumber) partycrasher
Heâs finishing up on Rue de la RĂ©publique when he sees Ladybug on Alyaâs balcony. His footsteps slow to a halt on the roof tile. Itâs Sunday today, isn't it? Ladybug doesn't patrol on Sundays. Did something happen at Alyaâs? He stops, reroutes, and heads over.
He gets closer, the lights bringing them further into focus. The two girls stand close together, huddled over Alyaâs phone, murmuring quietly.
âGood evening, ladies,â he says as he lands.
The shriek that exits Ladybug echoes through the street.
He stands there, rigid, all the punny greetings he had planned effectively smacked out of his mouth. He has never heard Ladybug make that sound before. He didn't even know Ladybug was capable of making that sound. Even Alya seems taken aback, staring at her wide-eyed.
After five heavy seconds of silence, Ladybug comes back to life. âUmâ!â she says. âWow! Chat Noir! Hi! I wasn't expecting you to crash our slumber party!â
He blinks, still reeling from the scream. â...Slumber party?â
This time, it's Alyaâs stupor that lifts. âUmâ yep! Ladybug comes over every Sunday and we have a sleepover. Yâknow, Ladyblogger-Ladybug bonding time.â
Huh. So thatâs why she doesn't patrol on Sundays? He thought it was a civilian thing.
âŠShe could've told him.
âOh. Well.â He hopes his voice doesn't sound strained. âDonât let me intrude.â He gives them both a smile, then leaps back onto the rooftops.
Neither of them say goodbye.
ââàźàčâĄàčàźââ
He doesn't want to be petty, but why would Ladybug not tell him about the sleepovers? Theyâd agreed to keep superhero things completely transparent between each other. So is this not a superhero thing, then? Is Ladybug hanging out in costume with Alya CĂ©saire more personal than hanging out with Chat Noir?
He huffs, eyes snapping over to the light on Alyaâs balcony. He has a right to bring this up, surely. He's her partner.
Ladybug is alone, this time, but the glass door is open. She has a blanket over her shoulders, a fox-printed mug in her hand, the light of Alyaâs phone illuminating her face, eyes glued to the screen.
Remembering her reaction from the last time, he steps onto the balcony a little gentler from behind her. âHeyââ
âThey're making out on a fire escape.â
He chokes on his spit, grappling for purchase at the balcony door. âIâ Iâm sorry?â
Ladybug whips around, the blanket flying onto the floor. At least she doesn't scream again. But the look in her eye is somehow even more concerning.
Behind him, a toilet flushes, and padded footsteps draw near. âDid you get to the part where he books a hotelââ She cuts herself off with a gasp. â...Chat Noir. Hi.â
The three of them stand together silently, in their awkward vertical line, for what feels like a full minute.
This was such a stupid idea. Whatâs wrong with him, accosting his partner on her days off? Itâs not his business how she spends that, nor who she spends it with. Unlike him, sheâs not wasting all her time thinking about their partnership. Maybe he just needs to get a life.
âSorry for crashingâ again,â he quickly says. He takes a couple of steps back to the railing, turning to face both of them. âIâ uh, thought there was an akuma down the road and wanted to tell you but, uh, looks like it's just a tree.â He laughs nervously, grabbing around for his baton. âIâll be off, then.â
âWaitâ are you sureââ Ladybug starts.
Thereâs sympathy in her eyes. His breath hitches.
âYes!â he says. As he steps away from her again, his baton slips from his hand. âSorry, Iâll just text next time.â
Alya pipes up from behind him. âChat, youâre always welcome to stayââ
âNo, seriously, I, like, am allergic to sleepovers. I break out into hives.â
Ladybug furrows her brow. âI don't think that's true.â
âMy medical history is very complicated.â Finally retrieving his baton, he opens it and turns to the skyline. âWell, bye!â
Ladybug makes a small, aborted sound of protest. But then as she reaches to stop him, her grip on Alyaâs phone slips.
She screams. Alya screams. Chat Noir wonders whether this is what they're practicing together every Sunday.
Still balanced on his baton, he grabs the phone midair, holding it up over the safety of the balcony.
Automatically, his eyes fall on the screen.
Ladybug moans as Chat Noir kisses down her neck. He lifts her onto the fire escape, pulling her legs around him, lifting his head to press a hot, wet, kiss to herâ
Alya snatches the phone from his hand. âThanks.â
Ladybugâs face is crimson, hands tight around her mug.
Chat Noir looks from Ladybug, to Alya, to the phone. Her screen is still on. He looks away before he catches any more words.
He clears his throat. âW-Well, I should, uh, get off, then. I meanâ!â He holds up his hands. âBe off! This balcony! And back home! Umâ you should readâ I mean, um, use your phone indoors just in case. Bye!â
He never does get around to asking about their slumber parties.
#RWRBMovie: Designing the sex scenes
âWe need to make sure that it is unambiguous to anyone watching this scene what precisely is happening,â he says. âWeâre going to be accurate to the body positioning, to the breath, to the moment of insertion.â Working with intimacy coordinator Robbie Taylor Hunt, LĂłpez thought through every possible detail about how two men have sex â and what about that process needed to make it into the scene: âWe talked about, âDoes the prince douche before they go in? Do we need to tell the audience that? Does the audience just assume that thatâs going on?ââ A great deal of time was spent on whether Prince Henry would be on PrEP, a medication taken to prevent HIV infection during sex. âRobbie and I decided together that the prince is probably not on PrEP, because it would be too dangerous for him to ask for prescription,â LĂłpez says. âSo the prince absolutely uses condoms. And because we couldnât really effectively answer the PrEP question narratively, we wanted to also just tell the story that the prince engages in safe sex practices and takes his sexual health seriously.â Eagle-eyed viewers have indeed caught sight of condom wrappers near Henry and Alexâs bed during a couple of points in the film â alongside a bottle of lube. âOnce we had passed a certain part in the story, I was like, OK, letâs empty out some of the lube,ââ LĂłpez says. âRobbie and I were looking at it, like, âHow much would they use? Like, well, letâs take it down about this much. OK, that makes sense to me.ââ It was also vitally important to LĂłpez to block out every beat of the sex scene in Paris. âDays before we shot that scene, Robbie and I actually got into the bed together,â the director says through laughter. âThere are videos that could, like, ruin both our careers. Because we were like, âAlright, weâre having sex. What are we going to do? Okay, this pillow goes here. The condomâs going to land here. Iâm going to do this.â We probably overdid it in terms of the preparation for the scene. But we also wanted to make sure that we got on to set and we had an answer for every conceivable question.â The opportunity to show two men having sex in what amounts to a major studio romantic comedy was not lost on LĂłpez. âIâd be a liar if I told you there wasnât strategy to the scene, that I didnât want to cause a conversation about why theyâve never seen this scene in a studio film,â he says. But he was also keenly aware of what he was asking of his actors. âLook, I donât know if I could do it,â he says. âIâm fully aware that Iâm asking two actors to do something that Iâm probably not willing to do. I better make sure that Iâm not wasting their time, that Iâm not making them feel exploited, and that they are included in every single decision, every step of the way. Itâs the only responsible way to do it. We knew that if Taylor and Nick didnât feel safe, we would never have gotten that scene out of them.â
Started the day by reading this article from the NY times, and I'm frankly, disturbed.
Some highlights:
"For decades, farmers across America have been encouraged by the federal government to spread municipal sewage on millions of acres of farmland as fertilizer. It was rich in nutrients, and it helped keep the sludge out of landfills."
Which I knew, and I knew that there were concerns about contaminants from like, the medications people were on. But human waste is part of the nutrient cycle, and it always made sense to me that it should be throughly composted and returned to agricultural lands, and I assumed that people in general were taking the steps necessary to make it safe.
But here's what I didn't know:
"The 1972 Clean Water Act had required industrial plants to start sending their wastewater to treatment plants instead of releasing it into rivers and streams, which was a win for the environment but also produced vast new quantities of sludge that had to go somewhere."
Which, yay, no longer polluting bodies of water, but now that means we're applying industrial waste water to agricultural lands. And have been since 1972. Which leads to this situation, among many others, I'm sure:
"The sludge that allegedly contaminated the Colemansâ farm came from the City of Fort Worth water district, which treats sewage from more than 1.2 million people, city records show. Its facility also accepts effluent from industries including aerospace, defense, oil and gas, and auto manufacturing. Synagro takes the sludge and treats it (though not for PFAS, as itâs not required by law) then distributes it as fertilizer."
So here's what some states are doing:
"In Michigan, among the first states to investigate the chemicals in sludge fertilizer, officials shut down one farm where tests found particularly high concentrations in the soil and in cattle that grazed on the land. This year, the state prohibited the property from ever again being used for agriculture. Michigan hasnât conducted widespread testing at other farms, partly out of concern for the economic effects on its agriculture industry.
In 2022, Maine banned the use of sewage sludge on agricultural fields. It was the first state to do so and is the only state to systematically test farms for the chemicals. Investigators have found contamination on at least 68 of the more than 100 farms checked so far, with some 1,000 sites still to be tested.
âInvestigating PFAS is like opening Pandoraâs box,â said Nancy McBrady, deputy commissioner of Maineâs Department of Agriculture."
This is fun:
"The E.P.A. is currently studying the risks posed by PFAS in sludge fertilizer (which the industry calls biosolids) to determine if new rules are necessary.
The agency continues to promote its use on cropland, though elsewhere it has started to take action. In April, it ordered utilities to slash PFAS levels in drinking water to near zero and designated two types of the chemical as hazardous substances that must be cleaned up by polluters. The agency now says there is no safe level of PFAS for humans...
Itâs difficult to know how much fertilizer sludge is used nationwide, and E.P.A. data is incomplete. The fertilizer industry says more than 2 million dry tons were used on 4.6 million acres of farmland in 2018. And it estimates that farmers have obtained permits to use sewage sludge on nearly 70 million acres, or about a fifth of all U.S. agricultural land."
There's more, but I wanted to condense it at least a little bit. I am glad we're raising awareness, and I'm glad we're starting to regular the amount in our drinking water, and I hope that we'll find a way to actually deal with PFAS. I am so frustrated that people are exposed in the first place, and in nigh inescapable ways.
Also, to all those people who were like, oh, organic isn't at all healthier for consumers? Guess what the organic standards don't allow to be applied?
