Tourniquet
"No," Jim said as Ed reached for their arm with the tourniquet he'd managed to fashion from a leather strap and a piece of wood. Their arm was bleeding badly, the color leaching out of their face, but they shied away from his hands as though his touch could burn them. "No, no, no, no," they repeated again.
Ed pulled his hands back and held up his palms, half surrender and half supplication. He wanted to scream or bite his own lips bloody with worry and regret. But now was not the time. "Jim. Jim." He waited until their gaze moved to his face to keep talking. "I won't touch you until you tell me I can, okay? I know this isn't ideal. I know you'd rather this was anyone but me. The crew will be here soon. But please let me help you until they get here."
Jim looked surprised for a moment. Then they looked angry. "I'm not scared because it's you, you asshole." And suddenly they looked embarrassed. "Don't make me say it," they muttered.
Oh. Oh.
Unspoken went: I'm scared because it's scary.
And suddenly Ed could deal with this.
"Hey," Ed said as gently as he could, "this is temporary. I bet it won't even be on for a half hour. Roach will be here soon. You can squeeze my shoulder with your other hand if it hurts."
Jim closed their eyes, gave Ed their arm, and absolutely white-knuckled his shoulder.
When the tourniquet was on, Ed set Jim's arm down and placed a piece of torn sailcloth over it so Jim didn't have to look at it. "It's all done," he told them. "I'm gonna keep on eye on your arm so you don't have to worry about it, okay?"
Jim blew out a tired breath. They looked very young all of a sudden. They nodded.
"Worst part's done," Ed assured them. "You did really good and we're just gonna hang out and take some deep breaths while we wait for the crew okay?"
"Okay." Jim nodded again and took a shaky breath.
"Good breath. Just like that. Do you want my coat?" Ed asked.
"I know how to breathe," Jim snapped. "Don't patronize me."
--
When the crew arrived ten minutes later, Jim was wearing Ed's coat.
As Roach helped them onto the makeshift stretcher they gave Ed a small smile.

Marbled Monday
This week's Marbled Monday is a twofer! This publication is a collection of issues of the Homeopathic Medical Reporter/Milwaukee Homeopathic Medical Reporter from the year 1848. The journal was published and edited by Tracy & Douglas, Homeopathic Physicians. Their office was "on Spring Street, West side of the river, in Goodall's Block, up stairs." Unfortunately that's about all we know about them!
The binding is interesting, with a Spanish Wave marbled pattern on the book itself and a French Curl pattern on the inside of the clamshell box it is housed in. The box is in much better condition than the book inside, which suggests that the box was made at a later date to protect the book.
This publication was acquired with the memorial fund of Delia G. Ovitz, who was a librarian at UWM's predecessor institutions, the Wisconsin State Normal School and Wisconsin State Teacher's College, from 1901-1944.

Today's #MedicalMonday is LJS 479, a 14th century miscellany which includes a brief work on personal health and hygiene. The text is quite fragmentary and a few of the larger initials have been cut out.
