...I got curious
Is the South More Racist Than Other Parts of the US? By Michael Harriot, Published December 4, 2017
Education
Numerous studies have shown that—regardless of the tax base—the more black students enrolled in a school, the lower the funding. Economic segregation still exists. But the percentage of black students in the South who attend schools that are 90-100 percent black is lower in the South than in any other region, according to a 2014 study by UCLA’s Civil Rights Project (pdf). The Northeast was the only region where the number of segregated schools has increased since 1968. The data shows that the average K-12 student in the South is more likely to receive an education closer to that of his or her white counterparts than in any other region in the country. It might not be great, but it is equal.
Employment
One part that made no sense to me is below...
White people in the South had a slightly lower unemployment rate of 3.93. Nationally, the black unemployment rate was 8.2, but slightly lower in the South at 7.99. The numbers show that Southern blacks are slightly less likely than their white counterparts to be jobless.
Either I’m misunderstanding how the rates work, or they meant to say “slightly more likely”. 🤔
Criminal Justice
Throughout the country between January 2013 and June 2017, police killed about 3.96 citizens for every million in the population. In Southern states, the average was slightly higher, at 4.02 people per million, but while more than 9.38 out of every million black citizens were killed by police nationwide, blacks were killed more than a third less often by Southern cops (6.65 per 1 million).
Politics
Of the 52 African-American members serving in the 115th Congress, 22 hail from the 12 Southern states. In a 2015 survey by the National Council of State Legislatures (pdf), although most state legislatures nationwide were less than 9 percent black, Southern state legislatures were 17 percent black.
Economics
Furthermore, according to BlackDemographics.com, of the top 10 states with high black homeownership, nine were in the South. In Forbes magazine’s 2015 list of the cities where blacks are doing the best economically, Southern cities made up 13 of the 15 on the list. Based on all of the objective evidence, African Americans in the South are closer to whites economically and politically and in education and employment. The opportunities aren’t equal, but there is less of a measurable racial divide in the Southern states than there is nationwide.
2023/09/30 edit: Should add that the more people you can count on for financial (and child) help the easier it is to "move up" in any aspect. What I'm saying is, mofos in the South got family to get cheap housing from while they save up for a house.
So Why Do People Think the South Is Racist?
There may be a number of reasons. It is possible that many people still think of the South as “country” and ascribe the stereotypes associated with rural areas to the South. But seven of the 10 blackest cities in the U.S. are in the South, and nine of the 20 biggest metropolises in America are Southern cities. More than 68 percent of people who live in the South reside in urban areas, according to 2010 U.S. census data. (...) But those blatant displays of racism sometimes obscure the fact that there are people across the United States who politely tuck their racism in their pockets every morning. They might not yell the n-word, but they discriminate in the hiring process. Maybe they’ve never burned a cross, but they don’t want black children in their schools or neighborhood. Perhaps it depends on how you prefer your racism—Southern-fried or unseasoned. And none of this is to say that the South is a utopia of people united in brotherhood. It simply is not demonstrably more racist than anywhere else in the country. It is not more racist. It is just racist ...

And now...
I go my ass to bed. Do what ya will with this long post. fuck
Edit...
Of course I've returned (the next damn mornin'). Got some anecdotes to add.
Met a Lady in the Mountain West who told me about a brotha she was friends with who said "I can apply to any job [in CO], but I won't get a callback." mood He eventually moved back to the South.
Met a brotha in the Midwest who was from Louisiana that said "They move slow up here. [MO] is less progressive." yep
Heard some brothas in Louisiana talkin'bout Northerners and one said "In the South, Whites don't care if you make more than them. They just don't want you livin' next door. But in the North, they don't care if you live next door to them. They just don't want you makin' more than 'em." This felt fairly accurate after I moved to the Midwest for college.
edit: I may have mixed up North and South here, it's been too long. 🤔
Heard somebody on Reddit explain it as "In the North, they're "cross the street" kinda racists, and they're 1 in every 4. But in the South, they're "drag you behind a truck" kinda racists, and they're 1 in every 8." have i told you about the time i was not so subtly repeatedly called the N-word by 2-4 different White chicks shortly after arriving on campus for move in day? have i told you about how fucking obviously racist Euros are in the Midwest?
And I'mma always say this shit about y'all asses, the North (basically everything above Arkansas) ain't less racist than the damn South. Y'all just better at hidin' it.
You know what? Destroy the "people in rural areas are all ignorant conservatives" stereotype and start mocking the "trad"/anti-feminist/neonazi people that are obsessed with rural areas despite having never been to one

anon who mentioned the antimatter spacecraft article! how stuff works' faq explicitly says that their articles are written by freelance writers, and that articles written in the past ten years includes a list of sources BUT as said previously, most articles were written in the early 2000s and haven't been updated despite what the article says, beyond being run through ai to change wording. physics phd and youtuber acollierastro has a video on her channel debunking the antimatter spacecraft article specifically, and she says that it is not an isolated incident. mediabiasfactcheck checks media bias, and how stuff works is admittedly unbiased, but that doesn't mean that its articles were written by experts or are based in up-to-date scientific findings. how stuff works is operated by system1, and their website is worth checking out
hi! again (not to sound like a broken record) but do you have any sources for this information (other than the youtube video referenced)?
MBFC doesn't just check media bias. They rate sources on bias, but also on factual reporting and credibility, as well as including a list of failed fact checks and a brief history.
For How Stuff Works, the MBFC rates it:

just FYI, mondoweiss is rated as questionable on mediabiasfactcheck, and the news about the ban on Palestine flag is another example - it was basically just something he instructed the police to do during demonstrations, and they CAN do it, but they haven't so far. In the last two weekends there have been multiple protests with Pro-Palestine elements, no one bothered them, they are visible in many pics. TL;DR don't just spread news without checking the source please
people being called antisemitic for being anti-zionist and against the state of israel is nothing new (specifically here this is a progressive Jewish news site literally created with the sole purpose to oppose zionist ideology in Jewish spaces). i have no doubt there is some bias present on the site, as there is in most news reporting, but i think it's pretty cringe you felt the need to go out of your way here and try to misrepresent Jewish people who are anti-zionist and against the genocide of Palestinians as a "hate group"
"weeelllll they CAN totally arrest and brutalize people just for flying a flag but they haven't done it YET so it's fine" is that your logic here? we should just wait until they start beating people in the street? if you read the article you would know that that's already been happening and that this is hardly the first time they've tried to outlaw the flag, Palestinians have constantly been harassed and targeted for the flag previously even before this, and that this ban is just a continuation of the ongoing erasure and genocide of an entire people.
i know this may be surprising, but i do read the articles i reblog. maybe you should read it too before sending me stupid shit like this.
and read through this while you're at it: https://decolonizepalestine.com/
#idk how you read the article and came away with the need to tell me ''no one is bothering them''#alright. tell that to the multiple Palestinians they've already murdered this year alone#this is not an invitation to argue btw but consider this me making my stance Very Clear#i've reblogged articles about Palestine here previously so this isn't new to this blog but again here is me saying it directly#genocide#settler colonialism#settler violence#sorry let me know if i should tag this as anything else

Another Article Compilation
These are mostly random articles I've come across and am saving here. Quite a few of these come from more local American News outlets which tend to provide a lot less biased news. Mediabiasfactcheck has a list of least biased news sources here. If you're not in the US and can't seem to access these pages, I think if you use a VPN and set it in the states it should work. Let me know.
Some horrifying news out of Alabama that will have really awful consequences.
Warning. These stories detail allegations of violence against Indigenous people.
Another set of articles on Florida book bans.
Tbh I don't get why it can be flouted so hard when it's directly censoring freedom of speech and forcing people to abide by a mainly religious ideology that discriminates against a large segment of the population. Freedom of religion also means freedom from religion. You can't take away books from everyone just because YOU don't like them, that's not how freedom of speech works. The state charging people with a felony for not abiding with censorship is also absolutely unconstitutional.
Continuing in the vein of Education.

Video
Transcribing the audio because it can be a bit hard to make out when dozens of people are saying the same words in slightly-different inflections all at once. Like when you're listening to yourself on the phone and hear yourself speaking just a split second after you actually speak. Gonna use 1x, 2x, 3x, etc. to signify how many stations are being shown for a given line.
1x: "I'm Jessica Headley-" "-and I'm Ryan Wolf."
2x: "Our greatest responsibility is to serve-"
1x: "-our Treasure Valley communities-"
1x: "-the El Paso Los (hard to make out) communities-"
1x: "-Eastern Iowa communities-"
1x: "-mid-Michigan communities-"
1x: "We are extremely proud of the quality, balanced journalism that CBS4 news produces, but-"
9x: "-we are concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one sided news stories plaguing our country."
1x: "-plaguing our country." "The sharing of biased and false news has become all-too-common on social media. More alarming, some media outlets publish the same fake stories without checking facts first."
1x to 36x over the course of the line: "The sharing of biased and false news has become all-too-common on social media. More alarming, some media outlets publish the same fake stories without checking facts first. Unfortunately, some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda to control exactly what people think. This is extremely dangerous to our democracy."
1x, repeated 15 times, one after another: "This is extremely dangerous to our democracy."
End video.
I actually wound up finding a full transcript on mediabiasfactcheck that continues a little bit further than where this video cut off, if anybody's curious.
#recently found this post while scrolling back through my blog and wanted to see if there were any new bits abt it#and there was!#figured i'd transcribe it while i was here

caution on the postmillenial (a site linked by a previous anon) - it has some very alt-right ties. it has been publishing COVID-19 disinformation, some Q anon stuff, and definitely not a source to promote.
Thank you anon!! (I know the topic of the article anon sent was also mentioned in more center-leaning sources, so it likely isn’t misinformation, but sites like that definitely aren’t good resources.)
And now I’ll plug the mediabiasfactcheck (dot) com:
They do a decent job of coalescing information about media sources for you, and generate helpful reports (short version of a report for the post millenial shown below).
I do have some issues with the site (glaringly USA-centric, biased reports on some issues, etc.) so I suggest reading the full report for anything that seems fishy. That said, this site can definitely help you get a sense of editorial and authorial bias you may not pick up on. (They also flag satirical websites, “fakenews” sites, and conspiracy websites!!)
Also, there’s a browser extension. :-) Thank you again for letting me know anon!

Media fact checker site!
https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/search/
Lately with news flying around all over the place, there’s a lot of misinformation being spread. All have some truth, but they might exaggerate it a lot to get a click.
Recently I discovered this site that tells you whether a site is politically left, right, or conspiracy sites. It’s helpful for someone like me who tries to find more factual news articles. They’re non-profit, transparent where their donations are going to, and do a great job at looking through sites to see if they’re factual, towards one political side or the other, and give a brief summary of what the news site is like.
As someone who tends to not trust anything the news says anymore, it’s nice to at least see some news sites that are pretty truthful. Even if it’s not much.
I don’t work there or anything I just found it and find it super cool. Been using it for news articles that I don’t know and want to see if it’s pretty true to their source. Granted nothing’s perfect but I’d like to share this with y’all ^-^

So like, Contrary to your previous espousement of CBC as centrist, the mediabiasfactchecker website says it’s center-left and is not listed in their “least biased” section which easily has over 200 news sources. Don’t mean to her use just thought I should let you know ya know? They are progressive and that means something on a bigger picture balancing scale
CBC is anything but centre left.
The only prominent pundits they feature on their programs are Centre to Centre Right in their view points. Their entire range of acceptable viewpoints ranges from Liberal to Conservative and nothing inbetween.
When was the last time they brought on an NDP’er or socialist on their panel on an issue that wasn’t talking specifically about the NDP?
When was the last time they brought on a climate scientist to discuss pipelines and why they’re incompatible with our climate emission goals?
CBC has also published numerous right wing editorials lately, and gave the violent group the Proud Boys air time.
This week on the National, CBC gave coverage to the Yellow Vest protests without pointing out any of their islamophobic, racist and violent rhetoric. CBC posted that infamous tweet and story about Brazil being ruled by a fascist as good for the Canadian economy.
Is nobody else noticing this? CBC has been taking a definite right direction in the past few years.
