I think Nick is the older brother, because it makes sense to start by creating a synth with stored personalities before trying to make one that develops a personality autonomously.

This man is only in his SIXTIES, they are LYING TO YOU

The Children of Atom were full-fledged on the Island when Longfellow was young. Confessor Cromwell is the one who sent them to Maine.

But he couldn’t have become Confessor until the mid-2250s, because he’s only FORTY-FOUR in Fallout 3, and he had a background as a trader before that! AND there still had to be time for the Children to travel all the way to Maine.

So Longfellow was born in the twenties, had his sad backstory in the fifties, and is about 65 in Fallout 4.

Strong could have been anyone, but I think he was either a divorced dad who would’ve been an accountant in another life, or just Mayor McDonough.

There’s support for the theory that synth McDonough was created before the election in 2282. We can assume the human had full gray hair at that point, because synths don’t go gray. So he was probably in his fifties at least.

Making Sense Of Shermie's Age

Ok so you know how the whole fandom is like boggling their minds over Shermie's age?

well atleast from what I've seen lol

Let's say that when Stan gets kicked out, he's arund 17-19 (we're going with 17 for this one), and with Shermie being just a wee baby in A Tale Of Two Stans, it's a little problematic when realising his age when he had a kid

but since both the twins (Stan and Ford) are "pushing 70" that would mean they're around their mid-to-late 60's

And if we were to assume that Stan was 17 when he got kicked out, and once again assuming that the twins are 65 at their youngest, then that would make Shermie 48.

If both generations had their kids at 18, then that'd make sense with the timeline, but that's assuming that's the twins at their youngest

If it were 19 and 69, Shermie would be 50

Making either one generation have kids at 20 while one has one at 18, or both generations having kids at 19

At worst,

19 and 65, Shermie would be 46.

Which would make both generations 17 when they had kid/s

Have you heard of the Sum and Product Puzzle, aka the "Impossible Puzzle" because it initially seems like there isn't enough information to go on? I think I have the answer, and I'm mad about it.

I hadn't so I looked it up and here's Wikipedia's summary of it

There's also an explanation, but I didn't look. I wanna figure this out myself.

So let's break it down.

"P does not know X and Y" means that X and Y are not both prime. If they WERE both prime, then P would know the two numbers right away. So if S KNOWS FOR CERTAIN that P doesn't know X and Y, that means that the sum of X and Y can't be made up of two prime numbers. So, for example, the sum can't be 20, since if X and Y are 1 and 19, P would get 19 and be able to easily deduce the values of X and Y.

So we have a bound for the sum here, so we just need to find all numbers that can't possibly be the sum of two primes. I tried to get a good list of all numbers that aren't the sum of two primes through trial and error, but I after I found the first few I just let the OEIS do the rest of the work for me

So our possible sums are: 11, 17, 23, 27, 29, 35, 37, 41, 47, 51, 53, 57, 59, 65, 67, 71, 77, 79, 83, 87, 89, 93, 95, and 97.

Now that doesn't narrow it down a TON, but we can probably do something with this. Now that P knows that these are all of the possible sums, they know FOR CERTAIN what X and Y are. Very interesting. That tells me a lot about the product.

So let's say X is 4 and Y is 7. Then P is 28, and S is 11. Now, other factors of 28 include 2 and 14, which add up to 16 (not on the list), so we could just say that and call it a day, but there's something else that perplexes me. What if P is 24? The factors of 24 are 6x4, 8x3 and 12x2, which give us sums of 10, 11, and 14, and 11 is the only one on the list, so we have new X and Y values for S = 11 that could also apply. And since the S mathematician said he knew what X and Y were upon hearing that P knew, we can safely say S isn't 11, since X&Y could have multiple possibilities.

So, simply put, we need a value of S where there's only one possible P that could work for it. On one hand that still sounds like a LOT of guess and check work, but on the other, I feel like there's a way to find this solution without that.

Doesn't matter. I did the guess and check work anyway, granted it was actually easier when I got to the higher numbers, since most possible factors of P went over the sum of 100, which is one of our limitations. Easiest way to find these unique products is to find the largest prime number (lower than the sum) and use that as one of our two values.

So the conversation goes as such.

S sees that their sum is 17. Knowing that 17 can't be reached as a sum of two primes, S says "P does not know X and Y", which tells P that the sum is one of those numbers we saw up there. P's product is 52, he figures and he only knows two numbers whose sum add up to one of those numbers. So he says "NOW I know the value of X and Y". S hears that and figures that it has to be that one EXACT combination.

X and Y add up to 17 and multiply to make 52 which means that X and Y are 4 and-

LDS Doctrine, 8yr-old Transgender Children and Policy

One of the most shocking things about the new LDS policies for transgender children, is the policy that appears to deny or severely restrict their access to baptism. I discussed that briefly here (last year and recently). This post looks more at the doctrinal side of the question.

LDS doctrine has been amazingly clear and consistent on the treatment of little children prior to the age of accountability (defined as 8yrs-old in Doctrine & Covenants 68) from the very early days of the church. I honestly feel this issue has some nuance, but the church has been absolutely unwavering in stating the tenet that children under the age of 8 cannot sin, or even if they can their sin is swallowed up in the atonement of Christ automatically.

I might personally believe that accountability for actions is a continuum based on the light and law an individual has received (2 Nephi 9:25-6, Luke 12:47-9, Romans 4:15, 5:13, DC 137:7 – a continuum applying to all individuals, regardless of age). However, LDS doctrine and statements are emphatic in declaring the complete innocence of little children, and that the atonement covers them completely until the child is 8 years old:

Moroni 8:8,11-2,14,19 (verses 20+ are much harsher) “...wherefore little children are whole, for they are not capable of committing sin… their little children need no repentance… little children are alive in Christ, from the foundation of the world… little children cannot repent; wherefore it is awful wickedness to deny the pure mercies of God unto them…”

DC 20:71 “No one can be received into the church of Christ unless he has arrived at the years of accountability before God, and is capable of repentance”

DC 68:27 “And their children shall be baptized for the remission of their sins when eight years old, and receive the laying on of the hands”

DC 74:7 “But little children are holy, being sanctified through the atonement of Christ; and this is what the scriptures mean”

Taken together, little children are whole and clean through Jesus Christ until they arrive at the years of accountability and are capable of repentance. And that age is 8 years old. Church leaders have repeatedly restated this:

Dallin H Oaks: “We understand from our doctrine that before the age of accountability a child is ‘not capable of committing sin’” (Dallin H. Oaks, “Sins and Mistakes,” Ensign, Oct. 1996, 65)

Bruce R. McConkie “There comes a time, however, when accountability is real and actual and sin is attributed in the lives of those who develop normally. It is eight years of age, the age of baptism.” (Bruce R. McConkie, “The Salvation of Little Children,” Ensign, Apr. 1977, 6)

And we can even see this in the policies laid out in the current General Handbook of Instructions:

31.2.3.1: Children who are Members of Record

(note: children of record are children whose names are on the rolls of the church prior to baptism at age 8)

"In the interview, the bishopric member ensures that the child understands the purposes of baptism (see 2 Nephi 31:5–20). He also ensures that the child understands the baptismal covenant and is committed to live by it (see Mosiah 18:8–10). He does not need to use a specified list of questions. This is not an interview to determine worthiness, since 'little children need no repentance' (Moroni 8:11)."

But for the first time in our history, we have an exception to this rule, and it applies only if the child is transgender. Instead of a meaningful interview with the local bishop or one of his counselors about following Jesus, a transgender child (and only a transgender child) who dresses differently or uses a different name and pronouns must have a worthiness interview with the regional Stake President directly. There is no other ‘sin’ that calls for this, even when little children have somehow perpetrated horrible crimes. If the Stake President finds the child worthy (is this even possible under the new guidelines??), he recommends the child for baptism to the First Presidency. The First Presidency is the highest council/court in the church, from which there is no appeal. The First Presidency then chooses whether or not to permit the child to be baptized. This new policy is spelled out in the Handbook:

38.2.8.9: Individuals Who Identify as Transgender

"Any exception to this policy requires the approval of the First Presidency. To request approval, the mission president, or the stake president for an eight-year-old, interviews the person. If he finds the person to be worthy and if he recommends baptism and confirmation, he submits a request for approval to the First Presidency using LCR."

In the past, the church has denied baptism to the children of polygamists and to the children of gays (possibly others). In those cases, it could always be said the child’s parents were at fault, not the child themselves. This new policy is a marked departure from that and, in my opinion, is inconsistent with the church’s doctrine. I hope to see this policy adjusted as other policies have been when they do not align well with our core values and doctrines.

i, 17 afab x, live with my mom, 39 f, during the school week and my father's mom, 65 f, during the weekend. my mom started dating jon,fake name, 34 m, on valentines day this year. she told me when picking me up with him in the car, meaning i couldn't react at all. the main reason i reacted was she explicitly told me this wouldn't happen. she also explicitly told me he wouldn't be moving in but he never left. he's a professional chef and has taken over our very small kitchen bc of that. he doesn't like our dogs until they're calm, which takes an hour, he doesn't like the cats either and has forced them to live in the hall way which is the size of a closet.

i don't like jon, ive made this known to both my mom and him. in therapy i figured out it wasn't specifically about him, just the fact i haven't lived with a grown man 24/7 since my dad and i watched him abuse my mom when i was 4 and my trauma was responding, not myself.

the other day, i realized i was no longer comfortable in the kitchen bc its his space to me and wasn't eating at this house as a result. i told my mother and was met with her pushing back and pushing for me to go on anti-depressants, something ive been adamantly against for 5 years since prozac made me a zombie.

Especially when it comes to Zuko's ancestry. Roku is his great grandfather. That man died 112 years before the show's events where Zuko is 16 turning 17. Ursa is in her late thirties during the events of the search, where Zuko is 19. This means Ursa should be in her early twenties when Zuko is born, 96 years after Roku died. This means she should have been born about 70 years after Roku died. She is Roku's maternal granddaughter, and for this to make sense biologically, let's say her mother had a late baby and was in her fourties when she gave birth to Ursa, meaning Ursa's mother had to be born about thirty years after Roku died. My question here is: how??

Roku was already 70 when he died. I know men can impregnate til quite late in their life but he was loyal to his wife Ta Min, who was around his age so had to be... let's say at least 65? Meaning, thirty years later, she's already 95 when she's supposed to give birth to Ursa's mother Rina, and according to the wiki Roku is alive when Rina is born.

What is the gender spilt of the murders in NBC Hannibal?

This is the third of three posts though this one works as a standalone, the first two are about the characters saying each other’s names and can be found here and here (I promise they are much more interesting than that summary makes them sound….) I decided to make this post because of this quote from Bryan Fuller; “And we are very conscious in the writer’s room; ‘Okay we just killed a woman, we have to kill a guy now.’” (47:20) And I always wondered how well they actually managed to do that…. thus I went out and collected the data and here it is!!

Adding a quick disclaimer that I did this for fun so I haven’t double checked it meaning there may be some mistakes!

As you can see from the data it turns out that they did kill less women than men during the show!!!! The total known kills in the show are 200 with 98 of them being men, 65 women and 37 were unknown!! I also kept track of who did the murder and those categories are: Hannibal, killer of the week, Will, and other.

To preface, I am only using “women” and “men” for my categories in this data as the show does not depict any trans or nb people (explicitly at least, there are a couple metaphorical/subtextual ones…) and if I could not tell the person’s gender or I simply did not see a body I categorised them as “unknown” 

You will be pleased to know that Hannibal killed 39.5 people (the 0.5 is Dolarhyde which I split between Will and Hannibal as it was a joint kill 😌)  over the show on screen and that 26.5 of them were men, 9 were women and only 4 were unknown! All I can say is that Hannibal is a feminist queen! That or women are significantly less rude in the Hannibal universe… although Freddie seems to defy that theory…. He does kill the most in s1 at 21 times! That essentially halves in s2 to only 12 times and again to 6.5 times in s3.. although it’s worth noting that I was unable to count his kills at Muskrat Farm as we don’t see any bodies on screen (though the script implies it was at least 7) and I only counted the Il Mostro kills that we saw evidence of instead of including the amount killed by the actual Il Mostro killer(s).. Not to mention that he spent half the season in prison! So all that said he did okay! Also I personally believe that his kill count across his lifetime is easily in the high hundreds, he has to meal plan if nothing else so let's put some respect on his name as Hannibal THEE Cannibal!

Unsurprisingly the killers of the week did make up most of the kills in the show, and killed 62 men, 56 women and 33 of unknown gender altogether. The killer of the week who did the most murder is James Grey at a whopping 50 but he did have a mural to create so that takes a lot of bodies! Second place goes to Lawrence Wells who murdered 17 people over his lifetime to create his totem pole, while Clark Ingram sneaks in at 3rd with 16 murders, although he only killed women and is the main reason why the women’s s2 kill count is higher than the men’s, boooooo! Poor Dolarhyde had to pick up all the slack in s3 as the only killer of the week but he did at least get 15 kills in! Sadly he was bound by the orders of the moon and could not do the suitable legwork 😔

Now Will DID get his own section of the table as is his right as the main character 😤 even if he only killed 3 people (which translates to 2.5 on the table as a result of having to share the dragon with Hannibal…). But they were all monumental kills, I mean Garret Jacob Hobbs haunted the rest of the show, Randall was turned into a magnificent tableau, and Francis was the culmination of his becoming and gave us That Ending!! It’s also not like he didn’t successfully manipulate multiple people into killing (or almost killing) people so I think he deserves extra points for those if only in our hearts!! Despite his low kill count he is the character we see commit murder the most on the show! He fantasises/imagines/hallucinates murdering 32 people across the show!! As the show moved away from the procedural nature he imagined killing less people; with s1 standing at 16, s2 moving down to 9 and then only 7 in s3! Just because most of the time he’s empathising with killers to recreate their kills doesn’t make the scenes any less sexy or iconic!!

The 7 other kills actually all come from women!! Another feminism win!! 3.3 is when Chiyoh killed her prisoner after being manipulated into it by Will. 3.7 sees Chiyoh kill again, this time’s it’s the 2 guys who were going to kill Jack and the 2 guards at Muskrat Farm, where we also we get Mason’s murder from Alana and Margot!! Then in 3.10 we get the flashback to Bedelia killing her patient! Go Girls!! Whooo!! 

In conclusion no one is surprised that there is a lot of murder in this show and Bryan Fuller while not exactly alternating each week in killing off each gender did not kill more women than men so arguably achieved his goal!

another great hal fic. i managed to get my roommate (who has not read homestuck) to read this and they really enjoyed it, so i'm sure you all won't have any problems liking this one either. there are a lot of fics out there of hal getting a body, but this one is very different in that it's not the happy ending that you might first think it is. this fic perfects the feeling of everything snowballing into a bigger and bigger problem until it all falls apart

rose salt has 360 atk at max level with trust, this should already include the -5% from her talent since she has that talent at e0 and it's about 5% less than ptilopsis and breeze have. with pots (remember she's welfare so these are guaranteed) the increased healing effectiveness is 17% before module meaning rose salt has 421 heal per attack or 147 healing per second offskill, which is coincidentally the exact same values as nightingale at max level and trust without module. max level no mod ptilopsis, breeze, and perfumer have 136/130/140 hps respectively (including perfumer's talent).

rose salt's module gives her +47 atk and increases the healing received buff to 22% with pots, so she goes up to 496 hpa / 174 hps. mod x nightingale gets +65 atk and a 5% healing amplification at lv3, which brings her up to 509 hpa / 178 hps, just barely ahead of rose salt. max mod perfumer has an offskill hps of 174, but she doesn't have any other form of team support.

rose salt's s2 at m3 reduces her attack interval to 1.5 seconds (from 2.85) and while it's active 50% of every instance of physical or arts damage taken by allies in range is instead spread out over a 5 second dot. during this skill she goes up to 280/331 hps without/with module respectively while increasing the amount of time you have to heal off each instance of damage, and it also allows operators to survive hits that would otherwise kill them instantly. mod x s3m3 nightingale has 321 hps, just slightly behind rose salt. maxed out ptilopsis with s2 has 610 hps and breeze s2 has 540 hps but I think nightingale is the most apt comparison because of the damage reduction, and ptilopsis/breeze have lower hps than rose salt and nightingale during skill downtime.

rose salt's talent gives her the effective stats of a 6*, and for the materials it takes to put nightingale's base numbers just barely ahead of her you could also just invest in rose salt with stuff to spare for someone else. rose salt's healing amplification is also larger, so if you're in a situation where you might need multiple healers (which is any situation where bringing damage reduction is also a consideration) you see more returns pairing them with rose salt than with nightingale. it's hard to compare their effectiveness at reducing incoming damage since it depends on the damage type and rose salt technically doesn't reduce total damage taken, she just gives you more time to heal it off, but in many situations rose salt will perform just as well if not better.

taking our good friend patriot as an example, in first phase he has 2400 atk and his attacks hit four times, instantly killing basically every operator save for the bulkiest on-skill defenders. if we take a lv 90 pot 1 mod x lv3 s2m3 hoshiguma (about the highest passive defense possible without external buffs), she's got 1357 def and 4050 hp, meaning patriot hits her for 4 x 1064 = 4256 damage and kills her instantly. with rose salt s2m3, hoshiguma instead receives 2128 damage and 425 damage per second over 5 seconds, leaving you with an alive hoshiguma who is getting healed with 17-22% increased efficiency and a blocked patriot.

healing amplification affects any heal that shows a green number, so rose salt's talent also increases the healing from musha and reaper traits, and the s2 damage reduction will apply to them. ulpianus' self heal talent also gets amplified, and with rose salt s2 he not only has effectively 50% sanctuary, he possibly will also trigger his talent off every tick of the dot, meaning he gets to heal 6 times off each instance of damage instead of once.

COVID-19’s summer surge shows no signs of slowing down - Published Aug 17, 2024

Asurge in COVID-19 infections has swept the country this summer, upending travel plans and bringing fevers, coughs and general malaise. It shows no immediate sign of slowing.

While most of the country and the federal government has put the pandemic in the rearview mirror, the virus is mutating and new variants emerging.

Even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) no longer tracks individual infection numbers, experts think it could be the biggest summer wave yet.

So far, the variants haven’t been proven to cause a more serious illness, and vaccines remain effective, but there’s no certainty about how the virus may yet change and what happens next.

The highest viral activity right now is in the West, according to wastewater data from the CDC, but a “high” or “very high” level of COVID-19 virus is being detected in wastewater in almost every state. And viral levels are much higher nationwide than they were this time last year and started increasing earlier in the summer.

Wastewater data is the most reliable method of tracking levels of viral activity because so few people test, but it can’t identify specific case numbers.

Part of the testing decline can be attributed to pandemic fatigue, but experts said it’s also an issue of access. Free at-home tests are increasingly hard to find. The government isn’t distributing them, and private insurance plans have not been required to cover them since the public health emergency ended in 2023.

COVID has spiked every summer since the start of the pandemic. Experts have said the surge is being driven by predictable trends like increased travel and extreme hot weather driving more people indoors, as well as by a trio of variants that account for nearly 70 percent of all infections. Vaccines and antivirals can blunt the worst of the virus, and hospital are no longer being overwhelmed like in the earliest days of the pandemic.

But there remains a sizeable number of people who are not up-to-date on vaccinations. There are concerns that diminished testing and low vaccination rates could make it easier for more dangerous variants to take hold.

“One of the things that’s distinctive about this summer is that the variants out there are extraordinarily contagious, so they’re spreading very, very widely, and lots of people are getting mild infections, many more than know it, because testing is way down,” said William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University.

That contagiousness means the virus is more likely to find the people most vulnerable — people over 65, people with certain preexisting conditions, or those who are immunocompromised.

In a July interview with the editor-in-chief of MedPage Today, the country’s former top infectious diseases doctor, Anthony Fauci, said people in high-risk categories need to take the virus seriously, even if the rest of the public does not.

“You don’t have to immobilize what you do and just cut yourself off from society,” Fauci said. “But regardless of what the current recommendations are, when you are in a crowded, closed space and you are an 85-year-old person with chronic lung disease or a 55-year-old person who’s morbidly obese with diabetes and hypertension, then you should be wearing a mask when you’re in closed indoor spaces.”

Schaffner said hospitalizations have been increasing in his region for at least the past five weeks, which surprised him.

“I thought probably they had peaked last week. Wrong. They went up again this week. So at least locally, we haven’t seen the peak yet. I would have expected this summer increase … to have plateaued and perhaps start to ease down. But we haven’t seen that yet,” he said.

Still, much of the country has moved on from the pandemic and is reacting to the surge with a collective shrug. COVID-19 is being treated like any other respiratory virus, including by the White House.

President Biden was infected in July. After isolating at home for several days and taking a course of the antiviral Paxlovid, he returned to campaign trial.

Biden is 81, meaning he’s considered high risk for severe infection. He received an updated coronavirus vaccine in September, but it’s not clear if he got a second one, which the CDC recommends for older Americans.

Updated vaccines that target the current variants are expected to be rolled out later this fall, and the CDC recommends everyone ages 6 months and older should receive one.

As of May, only 22.5 percent of adults in the United States reported having received the updated 2023-2024 vaccine that was released last fall and tailored to the XBB variant dominant at that time.

The immunity from older vaccines wanes over time, and while it doesn’t mean people are totally unprotected, Schaffner said, the most vulnerable should be cautious. Many people being infected now have significantly reduced immunity to the current mutated virus, but reduced immunity is better than no immunity.

People with healthy immune systems and who have previously been vaccinated or infected are still less likely to experience the more severe infections that result in hospitalization or death.

Almost “none of us are naive to COVID, but the people where the protection wanes the most are the most frail, the immunodeficient, the people with chronic underlying illnesses,” Schaffner said.

Note One: Laios' math is actually wrong. “If it means that I’ll save you, I’d be ready to give you my heart without even flinching! Because I care about you, idiot”, you yell so suddenly that Megumi flinches at the unusual harsh tone in your voice.

He can’t help but stare at you in disbelief. Megumi has known you for years, long before joining Jujutsu High. And even though he always knew you care for him, he never thought that it would go this far. After all, you’re so breathtaking gorgeous that he never lost a thought about you actually liking him back.

Because for Megumi, it has always been more than a sweet innocent friendship, more than a little sympathy. When he fell, he fell hard, head over heels to be exact. Your words make his heart beat a little louder, world spin a little faster. But still…Still he can’t accept the fact that you’d die so recklessly because of him.

“(y/n), I would rather die than knowing the love of my love got injured because of me…”

Now or never, the way your eyes pierce right through him and the fact that you nearly died because of him let Megumi gather all his courage.

“I can’t hold it back any longer! (y/n)…I think I might be in love with you. No, I’m sure that I love you. I love the way you walk and talk, how you carry yourself with so much elegance. I love the way you make fighting look so effortlessly and the little smile you wear on your face every time you see me. But even though your affection goes far enough to save me, I know you’ll never like me like this…I just needed to get this off my chest. Minutes feel like hours when all you can do is stand there and stare into the dark ocean of his eyes. All this time, you thought all these things about Megumi himself. That he only likes you as a friend, that he wouldn’t be able to see more in you than his comrade, a simple girl that’s been through some shit on his side. But those sweet words leaving his mouth, him telling you that he loves you…You can’t believe your ears. This has to be a pretty dream, right? Like the ones you desperately try to get back to when waking up, the ones you don’t even have to write down in order to remember.

This is not a dream, though. Your whole body is on fire, limbs burning like hell while your tear-stained cheeks get brushed by an icy wind. No, this is reality. And by the way his eyes glister in nothing but sadness you can tell that he truly believes in his words.

A warm smile creeps up your face as you close the distance between your bodies, fingers intertwining with his. Oh, if he only knew how often you daydreamed about this, how often you told yourself over and over that he doesn’t like you like this, that Megumi Fushiguro will never love you. Little did you know that he felt the exact same way.

“I loved you since joining Jujutsu High. All this time I thought that a wonderful boy like me could never…well…fall in love with someone like me”, you admit shyly.

“You’ve got to be kidding, right?”

He grabs your face, forcing you to look up into his ocean orbs.

“You are the most precious thing walking on this earth. If someone’s lucky than it’s me. Even though I still don’t like that you threw yourself in front of that curse for me. Please never do something like that again.

His breath brushes against your cheek. Is this really happening? Are his lips really lowering themselves at yours, touching them so innocently while all you can do is close your eyes and let yourself sink against his tender touch? No, this is sweet reality.

And all of that because you decided in a split of a second that Megumi is worth all the pain, that your feelings for him are greater than fear.

“I’d always throw myself in front of a curse again if it means that I can do that”, you mumble against his lips.
