The lack of contextual understanding in the reposts of this is driving Me insane. I am not even putting in the effort to explain the reasoning behind that line because it isn’t even worth it. ok hold on can you actually share your interpretation of that line (post you just rbed) cause now i'm kinda second guessing myself… i always took it as a mixture of francis wanting to downplay will's attractiveness to hannibal (as he does in a metaphorical sense in the ledger, i.e the "he faces you, he traps you but in the end he is broken" line) and partially having to logically believe it it as a result of his belief system: having such an unreachable view of physical attractiveness + valuing the romantic standard of (hyper)masculinity as opposed to will's "softer" look. idk i have thoughts about this but i'm dumb as hell so i could be wrong

You are absolutely not ‘dumb as hell’, do not down yourself. I am sure you are very intelligent.

A vast majority of the things you mentioned are correct!! The only context missing is that the line was from the original Red Dragon book, where Will Graham appears to be much more of an average-looker compared to the show. I think that repurposing the line and using it in a way that showcases both Francis’ beliefs system and his personal opinions of Will was a great choice.

Though I’m unsure of the ‘masculinity’ thing you mentioned. I’m sure it could absolutely be interpreted in that way, it simply isn’t my personal opinion. Francis’ identity and self-perception are deeply rooted in his traumatic childhood, which most fans of NBC Hannibal wouldn’t know much about as it isn’t explained as in depth as it is in the novel.

His transformation into The Great Red Dragon isn’t about masculinity, it’s about dominance, strength and Becoming something superior. Something More. He wants to shed all human insecurities entirely, such as his insecurities about his cleft palate and speech impediment, which are both deeply rooted in the physical, emotional, and psychological abuse he experienced as a child.

That is entirely my own opinion though, and it may be interpreted differently. I just dislike when people hate on Francis for that line not knowing the context.

I think that we as a fandom focus too much on Will remembering those words Hannibal said to him:

Between Savoureux and Yakimono passed at most two months, and Will was in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane at that time, so the fact that he remembers those words seems to me to nothing compared to the second ones.

Hannibal said these words to Will while they were eating ortolans together in Ko no mono. Will repeated them to Dolarhyde in The Wrath of the Lamb, a good four years later - after surviving the bloodbath in Hannibal's kitchen, the journey through Europe, Hannibal's trial, his relationship with Molly, and being a stepdad.

Will remembered them. They were so important that he even had to emphasize that those words were said to him.
