Hi, I'm new to the fandom and unsure who to ask my questions. I recently joined Tumblr and came across your posts while browsing the Hannibal meta tag. I have a few questions: What are Hannibal's feelings towards Bedelia and Alana? I remember Mads once said that Hannibal is in love with everyone on the show to some extent, so what exactly does love mean to him? Also, I'm having trouble understanding the line by Will: "You will only do that if I rejected you" (sorry, I paraphrased). I apologize if these are too many questions. Thanks in advance!

Regarding who Hannibal loves, you'll get different answers depending on who you ask. I firmly believe that Hannibal loves everyone he finds beautiful, inside and out. Alana and Bedelia certainly fit that criteria! Whether you interpret them as sex friends or romantic partners is up to you. (More thoughts on how Hannibal loves here.)

Personally, I'm a fan of Hannibal's S1 friendship with Alana. But as soon as he started dating her as an alibi, he was getting ready to let her go. (Before that, he kept her completely separate from his Ripper life for her safety... and also to keep her as a pristine character reference lol. Hannibal always has multiple motives for his friendships). I mean, he was willing to ditch her the instant Will suggested running away, so obviously he didn't view their relationship as a serious long-term thing. Tbh, I think he was mostly getting off on being in a love triangle with Will.

He was more serious about Bedelia because she had the killer instinct of a potential murder wife. He made a real go at trying to convince her to participate in his lifestyle (i.e. he wanted her to kill Dimmond in Antipasto). Sure, they weren't compatible in the end, but something tells me that the Bedelia leg dinner would've been just as romantic even without Will. 😏 I wrote about their relationship in detail here.

As for "You'd only do that if I rejected you": Hannibal knew Will would be drawn to him in prison and inevitably visit, giving him another chance to convince Will to be murder husbands. A second shot at Will is the only reason he'd ever surrender.

Will's 3x12 revelation that Hannibal was in love with him makes the "Goodbye, Hannibal" scene touching. He finally understood why Hannibal turned himself in. 🥲 But also, Will totally brings it up to rub Hannibal's failure in his face. Basically, "Aw, you actually love me... Have fun rotting in jail, loser. I'm going back home to my WIFE."
