Finding the fun in life

   I went to college to become a high school math teacher. I got the math degree and the teaching certification (in 1991), sent out my resume, crickets. There was an opening for an ‘actuarial assistant’ at a local business, and the only requirement was a math degree. I went for an interview and was hired.

   They had me do all sorts of oddball tasks while I was being trained, some of which were actually enjoyable, but the very first “real” actuarial thing I did was fill out PBGC forms for each client. I will not bore you by telling you what that was, except to say that the PBGC is a government agency that guarantees companies’ pension plans like FDIC guarantees peoples’ bank accounts in case of bank failure.

   The things was. To do McCompany’s form, I had to pull up the pension software. From the first screen, Forms was the third menu item. (Before the invention of the mouse, here) I would tap the down arrow twice, then hit enter. We’re in Forms! The PBGC form was the third thing on the menu. Down arrow twice, then enter. so . . .

Needless to say, I was IMMENSELY popular with my new coworkers, who appreciated my delightful sense of humor. Because they were a group of actuaries and accountants.

I have so many things I need to list on Chairish. This unbelievable pair of MC Co lamps I think are screaming Hollywood Regency. In working condition each lamp has 10 slag glass panels and two independent lamps with pulls. They are huge and think in the right decor would be amazing. Each stands 32" tall. The elaborate over the top details are spectacular. Originally, I'd planned to use them in an Art Deco styled room, but that project is on hold. I've not seen another pair anything like these.
