Solomon just gives you one of his signature closed-eyed smiles and turns away, moving to fix the growing problem in his lab with a calmness you didn't exactly like.

"It'll be fine MC, that's just Alkalis for you."

You watch in abject horror as the massive wad of potassium floats around the surface of the big bowl of water, massive lilac flames sprouting from the exothermic nature of the reaction. You step back, even with safety goggles you worried Solomon would still find a way to turn you blind. You turn away as the 'experiment' comes to a stop.

It wasn't even an experiment. That rat bastard of a sorcerer just had too much extra potassium and wanted to get rid of it.

"Solomon-" You hiss. "That was not cool."

"Yeah it was. Those flames were quite lovely, wouldn't you agree?" The ivory-haired man says relaxedly, bringing his arms over his head and stretching, his shrit riding up just enough that you catch a glimpse of a fraction of one of the Sorcerer's Society symbols he has tattooed on his hip by his T-bone. Solomon yawns before smiling, although it's more of a smirk. "It would truly be beautiful if fire was purple instead of orange in the usual sense. Don't you think so, MC?"

"I mean...maybe, but that doesn't excuse you doing dumb chemistry things because you ran out of magic materials!"

"Uhhh....yes it does."

"Nuhuh."

"Yuhuh."

"Nuhuh Sol, you're wrong."

"How?"

"Because this is stupid." You huff, on edge seeing as you thought that massive wad of potassium would end your life.

Solomon laughs, arms sneakily wrapping around your waist and pulling you into him. "Chemistry...is a big part of alchemy, my dear. Which, you guessed it, is used in magic."

You squirm in his hold, pouting. "Doesn't mean you have to try to kill me."

"Yes it does." Solomon replies playfully, "Besides, chemistry can be fun, for example, water of crystalisation is water that is chemically bonded into crystal form."

You deadpan. "That is the most boring shit-"

"Don't swear in the lab you bastard. It makes Jeremy sad."

"Jeremy the venus flytrap?" You raise an eyebrow, Solomon swats you on the arm, though not hard, never hard, he couldn't risk hurting his darling apprentice, now could he?

"He's from Neptune, actually."

Solomon takes advantage of your confusion to give you a gentle, yet sneaky kiss on the lips. Which effectively shut off your brain power for an hour or so.

I would like to say this. i LOVE that cove doesn’t like baxter. He doesn’t hate him, but they don’t mesh and I fucking love it. Their personalities clash in a way that makes it so that despite Baxter’s sweet attempts, cove is not into it and while he puts up with him, baxter is not in his little small found family like most other characters you interact with. Hell, even him and step 3 jeremy seem to match better than him and baxter. And I love it

Because if cove got along with everyone it’d be weird in a certain sense. But it’s so true that their personalities clash, even if cove is supposed to be warm and more social in your playthrough. Because baxter is just not his cup of tea. He’s too forward and proper and everything cove doesn’t really feel comfortable around.

And yes, he puts up with baxter for the mc and we love that, but it’s nice seeing their dynamic play out if you do things where they have to interact. It’s cute. Because again, he doesn’t hate baxter. And I love it. He makes the bare minimum effort to not be rude or disrespectful because baxter has done him no wrong

I find myself wondering this: if baxter and the mc were to get married while mc is close with cove, even if just a small tiny friendship spec, how would the relationship between them proceed? Would it grow and blossom into a friendship of sorts? Would it put strain on mc and cove’s friendship? So many questions and so much I’d love to know and explore.

Chapter 20 – When Two Becomes Three 

Leia 

I’m scared.  

So fucking scared.  

The doctors and nurses are talking to each other as they push my gurney to the operating room. Jeremy catches up to us and takes my hand.  We get to the doors and one of nurses stops Jeremy. “We’re going to get her set up and then bring you in.”  

He nods and looks down at me. “See you in a minute.”  

I keep my eyes on him for as long as possible before the doors closed. They move me into position and drape a barrier between my head and my belly. I hear the door creak open and then I see Jeremy all masked up. “Jeremy,” I say and can feel a tear fall.  

“Hey, everything is still okay. I won’t leave.” He leans over and kisses my forehead. “You’re still the strongest woman I know.”  

“Andy’s going to miss it,” I whisper.  

“I know.”  

“He’s going to hate us.”  

“No, he won’t. He’ll be happy that you and the baby are healthy and safe. Don’t think like that.” He thumbs my tears away. “Don’t cry, he wouldn’t want you to cry.”  

“Ok, let’s get started,” the doctor says.  The phone rings right before and a nurse answers. “Yes? Oh okay, send him up.”  She leans over to speak to the doctor.  

The doctor’s eyes crinkle and she look over at me. “I’ve got a surprise for you.” 

Andy 

Three Hours Earlier 

Morning skate on game day are always light. We never want to expend all of our energy before a game, it's just to get our legs loose from the day before and sleep. I’m excited but a little nervous. I wasn’t expecting Leia to be left alone while I was gone.  I get it, Miranda has a job to do, but it made me nervous. At least until I talked to my girl.  She was bubbly and happy over the phone last night. It calmed me down.  

“Heads up!” Luke ices me as he comes to stop and I laugh, wiping the snow away from my face.  

“Asshole!” I smack his ass with my stick as he skates away. I move to do my laps and shoot at the net occasionally. We have a rookie in net, taking shots as backup to Linus Ullmark since Jeremy is out with a concussion.  I’m talking with the kid when I hear Coach call mine and Luke’s name.  I snap my head up and he waves us over.  I skate to him. “What’s up?” 

“Get your shit together and get to the airport.  Leia is in labor.”   

The world around me stops. She’s in labor. “But she’s early,” I say. This can’t be happening. I’m supposed to be there to hold her hand. To see my daughter being brought into the world,  

“Just go,” Coach orders. “Jeremy is driving her there. Sway, keep us updated.” 

Luke guides me off the ice as Coach informs the team about what’s happening.  “Luke, I...” 

“Don’t freak, just get dressed and grab your phone and wallet. I’ll have the guys grab our stuff from the hotel.” Luke turned to walk back through the tunnel to the ice.  I changed and then call Leia, but she doesn’t answer. No, I have to speak to her, or I am going to lose my mind.  

One of the team coordinators tell us that we have a private plane waiting for us and we take off in a company car. My leg is bouncing in the car, staring at my phone. I try to call again. “Come on baby, pick up the phone.” 

Luke’s phone rings. “It’s Jeremy,” he tells me.  “Hey, let me put you on speaker.” Luke turns it and I can hear Jeremy.  

“Hey, sorry, I saw you calling but Leia’s been having some intense contractions.  The doctor is with her now. I don’t know how much longer she’ll be in labor.”  

“Jeremy, is she in a lot of pain?” I ask.  

“Yeah,” I close my eyes at his response. “They are going to give her a shot or something. She asked me to stay with her.”  

“Ok, don’t leave her alone. We’ll be in the air within the next 20 minutes and we are about two hours away. Jeremy,” I took a breath, “please take care of my family.”  

“I will Andy, I promise.”  

I hang up as we pull into the private terminal. Climbing the stairs, the captain greets us. “Mr. Barber, Mr. Andrews, management informed me of the situation. I’ll get you to Boston as soon as possible.”  

“Thank you.” I took a seat and just stared out the window. My mind was fully on Leia. Our daughter is early, and I don’t know if she is in distress. My mind runs through all the different complications that were in all the baby books I had read. My brow started sweating as I thought of preeclampsia and cord asphyxiation.  

“Andy, take a breath for me.” Luke grabbed my shoulder and I turned to look at him. “C’mon buddy, breathe.”  

“She’s alone and she’s giving birth to my baby and what if everything goes wrong?” I could feel myself panicking and I couldn’t stop it.  

“Whoa, hey, she is not alone. Jeremy is there and while I’ve had my issues with him, he has proven to be a good man. He won’t let anything happen to her if he can.”  

“Luke, why do I feel like this? I’m terrified.”  

Luke smiled. “Because you’re about to be a dad. Soon, you will have two girls to take care of.  They are going to love you so much.” He patted my back before he went back on his phone.  

He’s right. I will have my girls to take care of from now on. And a thought runs through my head. Because, while everyone knows me to be that little girl’s dad, biologically, she isn’t mine.  That isn’t something I had talked to Leia about. And then I thought about the fact that I don’t have any legal rights to take of Leia if something were to happen. I would die if something happened to her.  

But we’ve only been dating for a few months. Though I’ve known her for the better part of 25 years. She’s my best friend for a reason.  She knows me and I know her. And I want to be in her life forever.  

And I know now what I need to do.  

“Hey Luke?” 

“Yeah bro.”  

“You know I love Leia, right?” 

“Duh.” He rolls his eyes.  

“Right. Well, do you think that it would be ok to ask her to marry me?” 

I probably should have timed that better as he was sipping a water when I said that. He sputtered and choked. I patted his back until the red color faded from his face. “You’ve only been together for a couple of months.”  

“Three and we’ve been living together for seven and have been friends since she was born. She’s it, man. She’s the one I have been wanting, who make me the best version of me. I love her and I want to make her my wife. I want to legally adopt our baby and be a family, spiritually and legally.”  

Luke goes quiet for a few minutes as I go back to staring out the window. “Why ask me?” 

I turn back to him. “Luke, you are her family and while I’m not really asking for your permission, I do want your blessing.”  

“Do you have a ring?” 

“Not yet. I was just thinking that I don’t really have rights over Leia, or the baby and I needed to fix that. The first thing I need to do is make her mine, legally. But I know she will never do it if she doesn’t have your blessing.”  

Luke nods. “You’ll still let me crash at your place and let me visit my sister?” 

“When Miranda gets pissed, you can hide at our place.” I chuckle a little. “So...” 

“I’ve always thought of you as a brother.” He sighs. “Just making it a legal thing.” He smiles. “Yeah, you have my blessing.” We awkwardly hug in our seats. 

I start looking at rings online, just to get an idea of what I want and prices when the captain announces our descent into Logan. I take a breath and hope that we are still in time.  

After landing and getting into the private car the team sent, we raced through the street of Boston. As we pulled into the entrance of the hospital, I got a message from Jeremy.  

Jeremy: they need to do an emergency c-section.  They are moving her now.  

“Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck!” The car barely stops when I’m running out the door.  “For Leia Andrews?” I ask at the nurse's station 

“Labor and Delivery 5th floor.”  

“Thanks.” I turn to run but the nurse yells. “Sir, I’m sorry but she’s been taken in for an...” 

“I know. But she’s my fiancé and I need to get to her.”  

“Hang on.” She dials a number and speaks to whomever.  She hangs up and grabs a plastic bag with a blue cloth in it.  “Follow me.”  

She walks as Luke and I follow her. “We already have someone in there with her but since your doctor is a big fan, she’s going to allow two. You need to put this on with the hat, mask and gloves right now.” The elevator opens and we climb in as she pushes for the floor.  I pull on the gown and hat and gloves as she ties the straps around me. “Mr. Andrews, I will walk you to the waiting room after to drop off Mr. Barber.“ Luke nods. We get to the floor and see directs me to the right room. 

I take a breath and push my way in. “Oh, good, Andy, you made it.”  I can hear Dr. Montgomery, but I can’t see her.  

“Hey doc.”  

“Andy!” I hear the gasp of my girl and see her turn her head to the left. She has tears in her eyes. “You made it.”  

“I said I would, my queen.” I look up and see Jeremy in scrubs and a surgical hat on her right. “Thank you.” 

“No problem.”  

“Alright folks, let’s get this baby out. Scalpel,” Dr. Montgomery orders.  

“What happened, baby?” I look at her and the tears silently fall. I lean over and kiss her forehead.  

“Her heart rate dropped, and they made me lay on my side to help but it didn’t, so they rushed us over here,” she explains. “I’m sorry Andy, I tried to protect her and...” 

“No, sweetheart, you did a fantastic job. Maybe she’s just being difficult, like you.”  

Jeremy snorts and then coughs while Leia scoffs. “I am not difficult.”  

“And baby is out and it’s a girl,” the doctor calls out.  But then it’s silent except for the beeps of the machines.  

“She's not crying. Andy, she’s not crying.” The look of panic made her eyes search wildly for her baby.  

“I know. Doc?” I saw them move the baby to the incubator that was waiting. She was surrounded by five people, working on my little girl.  

“Andy, Leia, the baby is...” 

And then we heard it, the most magical, joyous noise you could ever hear.  

Our baby crying.  

“Oh, thank God,” I said as I pressed a kiss to Leia’s forehead.  

“I was going to say, baby was having some difficulty. They are going to take the baby to the PICU for some test and observation. I’m going to stay to close.”  

“Can I go with her?” I ask.  

“I’m sorry Andy, but until they know she is stable, they won’t allow it right now. But Dr. Peters will keep you updated.”  

“I think I am going to step out,” Jeremy said.  “Great job mama. I’ll be in the waiting room.” He left and I stayed by Leia’s head.  

“She has to be ok, right? She has to be,” Leia kept repeating softly as tears rolled down her face.  

I tried to distract her. “Have you decided on a name for the Princess?  We can’t keep calling her that or the Baby forever.  She’ll get a complex.”  

“Shut up,” Leia said a watery giggle. “I really like Nora.”  

“I like Avery or Jamie.” I kept running my hand over her cap. “I guess we can wait until we see her.”  

I felt Leia tremble. “Are we going to see her?” 

“Of course we are. Love, she’s going to be ok. You have to believe that because otherwise, we’re just putting bad juju out there.  It's like say, ‘we might win the cup.’ No, we will win the cup. Positivity.”  

“If I could move, I would hit you, Andrew Barber.”  

We were in the operating room for another thirty minutes and then moved to the recovery room. Leia fell asleep from the pain relievers that she was given, and I was just pacing back and forth, waiting for news on my daughter.  An hour later, the pedestrian, came in. “Mr. Barber?” 

I turned to him and paled. “Yes?” 

“Do you want to wake Mrs. Barber?”  

Mrs. Barber. As much as I like the sound of that, it wasn’t the time. “Leia, sweetheart? The baby’s doctor’s is here.” Her eyes fluttered a little and blinked open softly. A smile started to grace her face when the realization of my words hit. Panic filled them but before she could speak, I took her hands. “Everything is ok, please relax.” She nodded and turned to the other man in the room. I sat next to her on the bed and nodded at the doctor.  

He smiled.  “He’s right.  Baby Andrews-Barber is going to be fine.”  

It felt like the pressure on my chest lifted and I could breathe for the first time in hours.  

“She had some fluid stuck in her mouth, which is why she couldn’t cry.  We cleared it, made sure there were no lingering fluid or obstructions.  She pinked up as soon as we had her in the PICU.  I’m recommending that you both stay here for a couple of days just to make sure.”  

“Can we see her?” 

“I’m having the nurse bring her in a few minutes. I just want to explain everything before you see her. She does have a tube in her nose and that’s just a precaution for the fluid.  We’ll probably remove that tomorrow.”  

Leia wept into my side, the stress of everything finally coming to an end. I kissed her head. “Thank you, doctor, so much.”  

“My pleasure. I’ll be back to check on her later tonight.” He walked out and I held onto Leia tighter. The door opened again, and a bassinet came through the door with a nurse. “Hi mom and dad. I have someone that would like to meet you.” She pushed the bassinet right next to Leia’s bed. She lifted her out and handed her to Leia. “Just be careful of the line. It's not connected to anything, but we don’t want to pull it out.” She laid the little pink bundle in her arms.  

Dark lashes caressed her cheek, espresso color hair peeked from beneath a pink cap. Her pink skin glowed and she had a perfect rosebud pout.  She wiggles a little and blinked, displaying Leia’s green eyes copied into her own.  

“She’s perfect,” Leia whispered. “Hi baby, we waited for so long for you.“ She kissed her head, “Andy, she’s here.”  

“She is.” I wiped at my own eyes. “You did a great job, Leia. She’s beautiful.”  

We stared at her for a few minutes before Leia said, “Avery.”  

“What?” 

“Avery Nora Barber. That’s her name.”  

“No Andrews?” 

“No, she’s yours, Andy, She’s a Barber.” She held her out to me so I could hold my daughter for the first time.  She was light in my arms but all I felt was joy.  

And I fell in love. 

“Hi Avery, I’m... I’m your daddy.” A tear fell onto her blanket as I realized I would do anything for this tiny human in my arms. That she and her mother were the center of my world without even trying. “Thank you, Leia.” 

We spent an hour together before Leia told me to take Avery to meet her uncles. I took her in my arms and went out to the waiting room.  When the doors swung open, Luke and Jeremy stood up. "Guys, meet my daughter,” I said with teary pride.  

Luke took the bundle and cooed at his niece. Jeremy peeked over his shoulder. “She’s beautiful Andy. Congratulations.”  

“Thanks Jer. Fuck, thanks for being here with her.” I shook his hand before I pulled him into a hug. “I was calm because I knew she was in good hands.”  I wipe the tears from my eyes.  “Wanna hold her, Uncle Jeremy?” 

He took the little miracle in his arms. “She’s got her mama’s hair and looks like Leia.” He smiles and kiss her forehead.  

“Welcome to the world, Avery Nora Barber.”

oooh okay so i read the woods all black by lee mandelo and well it was a time !! i liked the vibes the story was pretty interesting and tbh i don't have much to say on it its pretty short but i recommend if you like monsterfucking with plot

then i read immortal longings by chloe gong and OOF this one was good. fell into it pretty much immediately and i think its soooooo interesting and fun. excited to read the second one !!!!!

then i read the daughters of izdihar by hadeer elsbai !!! this one was fun and i liked the magic; had lots of conversations which to some myself included may seem like preaching to the choir and a little on the nose HOWEVER i do think they are necessary looking at the state of the world. interested in continuing the series although its probably not the highest on my tbr

then i read the unmaking of june farrow by adrienne young, this was cute ! fun and sweet, not showstopping or lifechanging or anything but it was interesting and i was pretty engaged

after that i read intimacies by katie kitamura... ohh this one was interesting. i did really like it and hearing about the mcs life in the hague was super interesting, although to me the most interesting parts were the translation aspects and the trials and her job. cool character study and i will always love a book about language and translation

then i read we had to remove this post by hanna bervoets.... im not really sure how i feel about this one. tbh i think that was the point, making readers uncomfortable, and the author certainly did that for me. tbh it wasn't as engaging as i thought and written in letters? definitely interesting, but i think my expectations were too high lol. overall good if ur looking for a fucked up little fiction book about a very real problem

after that i did my aftg reread and well. you know how that went. although i think i've discovered that neils main character syndrome tm is part of the reason for the brainworms. like the whumpy main character syndrome is what does it. having all your pain and awfulness on full display to Everybody and still being accepted for it. i mean obviously thats like the whole theme of this book. but this specific flavor of it.... delicious

after that i read bear by julia phillips, a weird one. i liked it i think it was okay. the bear was fun the sisterly relationships were good. yeah idk what else to say about this one. tbh i don't really even remember how it ended lol.

then i read mickey7 by edward ashton, a fun one ! liked the concept the constant calling everyone pal and friend-o was a . choice. the ending was kinda silly but thats okay i like the concept of coexisting with the creepers. yeah idk.

then finally i read the sunshine court. yes i did rate it 5 stars. and well whos gonna judge me. i am interested in jean and jeremys stories and so i will continue reading it doesnt have the exact same vibe as the original trio but i liked it nonetheless. currently still trying to get the worms out of my brain. please help

Based off of my shit reasoning and simply because I had this idea randomly while eating ice cream anyways LESSGO!!

Okay so uh group name

It would obviously be KIRA or some weird variation of that word but with like numbers and shit

They’re a 4 member co-ed group (fuck Higuchi) that debuted on January 28, 2013.

Members consist of Light, Misa, Kiyomi, and Mikami.

GROUP POSITIONS

LIGHT’S the leader (OF COURSE) and he also trained the longest in the company. (I haven’t come up with the company name but just assume it has something to do with the series.) He willingly auditioned and passed quite easily bc y’know he’s fucking HOT and talented

He’s also the main rapper (he was literally spitting bars at the last episode. holy shit), main dancer, face of the group, and sub vocal. Tbh he’s probably be one of the most popular members among the fan base and is pretty well rounded. (thanks to Jeremy Jordan for playing as him in the musical. What a sexy singing voice)

He writes and produces some of their songs too. Like in some songs you can see his name in the credits and stuff.

When performing, he knows exactly how to captivate the audience with those EYES. WOW. (But he probably got into a resting bitch face scandal LMAO. Or some other attitude problem scandal bc you just KNOW he’s a bit of a bitch to other lesser known groups)

MISA’S the lead rapper, visual (to be honest, they’re ALL visuals.), and lead dancer. She’s really popular and is THE it girl. Y’know??? She’s literally on every magazine cover and some companies even want her to take part in their dramas

She also has a lot of iconic airport fashion photos taken by her many fansites bc her sense in fashion is fucking ICONIC. LIKE WOW.

(But she def has the most stalkers too 😕)

She’s the kind of member you see a lot on commercials/variety shows with her bubbly attitude. Misa probably got scouted by the company as a model first but then switched to being an idol once she saw Light pursuing that path.

When performing, her winks and small smiles make the audience go in awe at her beauty uwu (one time she pulled a bae Irene and everyone started screaming the moment she was on screen)

If she were to get into a scandal, it’ll probably be something along the lines of netizens hating on her for being too bubbly.

KIYOMI’S the main dancer, center, and lead vocalist. She isn’t as popular as Misa, but her elegance and grace makes her stand out. I headcanon that her first burst of popularity came from a picture taken by a fan site of a different group, but Kiyomi was unknowingly photobombing (but in a sexy way) it lmao. Fans literally SWARMED to find out who she was

She’s mostly the center of every dance break, and is nicknamed the ‘one of the best dancers’ in their generation. I think she goes on vlive for a bit and busts some moves for her fans lmao

Kiyomi’s the member you see as the MC for big award shows like MAMA and some other shit. Before she got scouted, she was a ballerina for quite a bit but then some random company person invited her to an audition and she made it. She also trained for the shortest amount of time due to her experience in dance.

When performing, she just has this aura to her that makes everyone’s eyes lock onto her. Ofc she loves the attention

Her scandal would probably be like “lazy dancing” and shit but its from when she had an injury 💀💀💀poor girl

MIKAMI’S the main vocal (ONLY BECAUSE HE LITERALLY HIT A WHISTLE NOTE IN THE LAST EPISODE LMAOOOO) sub rapper, and lead dancer. He’s not as popular as Light, but he made a name for himself with his vocals. People came to know him by “that one long haired guy” lmao

He’d probably be like a co-leader to the other members, like keeping their schedules in check and being like a personal gym trainer to them. Maybe he’d also sorta be like a vocal coach? Something like that

He also worked very hard to get where he was. Being an idol wasn’t exactly on his dream list, but if someone chose him to do the job, then by all means he would not slack. (I headcanon that Mikami was on the verge of quitting, but after a few persuasive conversations by the other members he decided to stay)

He got scouted (more like chased) by some scouts for a few weeks before finally giving in…I mean, they did give him a nice pen so why not accept?

He trained the 2nd longest alongside Light. Before auditioning, he literally had NO experience whatsoever. But once he’s dedicated, you just know there’s no turning back.

When performing, his unique voice tone and high notes make other groups go WOWOW.

Chapter Five - Here for You - Leia/Andy

Leia 

I fully understand that news can make you speechless.  

I’ve shared some doosies in my lifetime.  Especially to the man in front of me.  While Luke is my brother and I trust and love him, sometimes there are things I just can’t tell him.  Like when I lost my virginity to my high school boyfriend. Or when the same boyfriend broke up with me and I couldn’t tell Luke because I knew he would beat him up.  

But I could always tell Andy anything.  

Except this time, I think I broke him.  

“Andy, please say something,” I beg him.  

“You’re pregnant?”  I nod, scared he’s going to start yelling.  He stops and looks away for a moment. Then he looks back at me. “It’s Bret’s.” Not a question, just a statement.  I nod again because, really, I don’t want to say it out loud. Andy runs a hand through his hair.  “Are you going to keep it?” 

“I don’t know,” I whisper. I really don’t. Because right now the feelings of being terrified and excited are swirling around in me.  The road trip had passed in a blur. I was doing everything i could to avoid being sick in front of everyone, while trying to do my job. It was hard.  And a couple of times I had to lie to get out of whatever it was that was brought up, like going to a club and stuff.  

The weird part of it was Jeremy wasn’t around like I assumed he would be.  And Andy had been checking in on me more frequently. Stella just rolled her eyes when I mentioned it, so she was no help but now, in this moment, I need Andy.  

“Ok,” he finally says.  “Have you seen a doctor to confirm?” 

He’s using his captain voice, which is sexy to hear on the ice while he is commanding his teammates in drills and right now, it's making my lower region tingle a bit. Fuck Leia, focus. “Uh, no. I didn’t know where to do in California or Washington or Canada for that matter.  I was going to sneak over there soon because i wasn’t gonna say anything but here we are.”  

“Yeah, here we are.” Andy shook his head. “Are you going to tell him?” 

Fuck, I hadn’t even thought of that. I have to tell my ex about a baby that i am sure he doesn't want.  Or if he does, would he insist I move with him so he can be closer to his kid.  Or worse, would he say I need to marry him so I don’t raise a bastard. He had that mentality, so it was a legitimate fear.  

Andy could see my panic.  “Hey, its ok.” He pulls me back into his arms.  “Everything is going to be ok.”  

“What am I going to do Andy?  I have to tell him but what if he wants to take my baby?  What if he insists I move? Oh god.” I lean into him and sob.  My entire life is being blown up and I have no idea what to do.  

“Princess, breathe for me. C’mon, you can do it. In and out.” I breathe at his tempo, grateful for his presence.  As my breathing slows, he kisses the top of my head.  “Now, everything is going to be ok.  First step is the doctor and confirm everything.” I nod. “Second, is deciding if you tell the doucheweasel about it. Whatever you want to do, I am here for you, ok?” 

“I have to get a place and buy baby stuff... and Luke.  Oh god he’s going to murder me.”  

“A place?” Andy asks surprised. “Why do you need a place?” 

“Andy, if I have this baby, I need to have my own place.  I can’t cramp your style with a pregnant girl living with you.  Eventually you’ll want to date and then you bring a girl home and there is a screaming infant and...” 

Andy covers my mouth to stop the ramble that is happening. “Leia, do you honestly think I would let my pregnant best friend live somewhere else?” 

Well, that was unexpected. I move to make a sound and Andy lets go of my face.  “You aren’t kicking me out?” 

“And risk your brother’s rath?  I don’t think so.  No thank you. You can live here with me. Whatever you decide. Promise.” He holds out his pinky finger.  I grasp it with mine and smile.  

“I think I do want to keep it, Andy.  I know its part Bret but hopefully we can tame whatever genes that asshole passes over.” I chew my lips.  “I’ll email him about it and he can decide from there.”  I move to stand but I’m so dizzy from being dehydrated and Andy has to hold me to stop from falling over.  

“Would you go back to him if he asked?” Andy looks torn over asking the question.  

“No,” I say immediately. “I can’t be with someone like him, who wants to control my life and my decisions.” The look of relief that passes Andy’s face is comical.  “You really didn’t like him.”  

“I really didn’t, princess.  C’mon, water, juice and some toast to get your stomach to settle.  I’ll call around for a doctor.”  

“Thanks Andy.”  I chew my lips as we walk downstairs.  “Can you help me with more thing?” 

“Sure Princess.”  

“Can you help me tell Luke?” 

I’ve never seen a man look so scared in his life.

It's a couple of days later, and I’m sitting in an exam room with Leia, staring at the posters in her office.  Why am I staring? Because its pictures of woman, in child birth. I swallow hard, trying not to get queasy. Why did I volunteer for this?  I look down at Leia, who is chewing her bottom lip and clutching Sebastian. She was the reason. I take a deep breath and take her hand.  “Everything is going to be ok, Princess.”  

“You don’t know that Chewy.” She looks up at me. “I could have already miscarried, or its ectopic or its was completely false and...” 

I squat to get eye level with her, and she stops.  I kiss her knuckles. “Everything is going to be fine. They already did the blood test and that will confirm everything. The doctor will come in and check and then we can make some decisions, ok?” 

“We?” She looks at me with shiny eyes. She is so scared that her eyes are wider than normal, Sebastian basically being choked at this point.  

I grasp her fingers around the stuffed cow and massage them until they are loose again.  “We, ok? I won’t leave your side as long as you want me here.” I reach up and kiss her forehead. “We are going to be ok.”  

Just then, the doctor comes in and I stand back up next to Leia.  “Good Morning, Leighton. I’m Dr. Sheppard.  I’ll be doing your exam and then I will send you to the ultrasound room for the first pictures of baby.  Is this dad?” 

I move to say no, but Leia beats me to it. “Yes, he is.”  

What the fuck is she doing? I look down at her and she smiles her public relations smile and I know, she is saving face.  I smile at the doctor as she makes a note.  “I’m Andy...” 

“I know who you are Mr. Barber. I’m a big fan.  I was sorry to hear about... well...” 

Shit, Leia did not think her decision through and here we are. “Leia and I have been friends for years and we had one night.” I shrugged and smile. “Guess everything was meant to be.” The lie comes too easily. 

“Of course,” Dr. Sheppard flushes and moves to the computer.  She cleared her throat and read something.  “Well, the blood test confirms high levels of HCG, which is positive for pregnancy. When was the last day of your menstrual cycle?”  She smiles as she looks at Leia.  

Leia flinches and flashes me an apologetic look. “Umm, I’m not sure.”  

“That’s fine. The intra vaginal ultrasound can confirm a pretty close approximation of size and date of conception.  Otherwise, how are you feeling?” 

“I’m nauseous all the time.  Sleepy too.” She looks at me again, like she wants to verify that she’s using the right words.  

“She’s been having a low grade fever on and off for a couple of days.  She’s able to keep toast, tea and a little bit of juice down during the day. She’s also been dizzy a few times,” I explain.  

“These are all normal,” Dr Sheppard confirms.  “The dizziness is from the dehydration and vomiting.  Unfortunately, morning sickness is not just in the morning.  It really should be named all day sickness.  That should clear up as you head into the second trimester.” She looked back at the notes on the computer.  “Otherwise, your weight is good, all of your other blood levels are great. Just try to rest and keep your strength up.  I’m going to prescribe some antinausea medication for the times it won’t just stop.”  

“Ok,” Leia’s lip trembles a little.  

“Let’s get you to ultrasound and see baby.”  

Once Leia is stripped from the waist down, I sit by her head as we wait for the technician.  “I’m the father?” I whispered to her.  

“I panicked.  I’m sorry.  I just didn’t want to be judged as a single mother.”  

Before I can respond, the tech comes in and they start on the exams.  They roll a wand over Leia’s flat stomach, and we see a tiny blip of a thing show up on the screen. Then the most amazing sound is echoing in the room.  “Is that...” 

“That is baby’s heart beat,” the tech smiles.  “It looks like you are about eight or nine weeks pregnant. Congratulations.”  

I feel it pull on my chest that my Leia is going to be a mother.  She has a new life in her belly.  I see the tears stream down her face.  I thumb them away as I have a really devastating thought cross my mind.  

I wish I was the father for real.  

As we stared at the pictures in our living room a little while later, Leia finished composing her email to Bret.  I can’t believe that fucker gets to be a father to this baby.  This baby that should be mine. I have to swallow down my anger about it as Leia leans into me as she hesitates to press send. “I’m right here Princess.”  

“I don’t want him to take my baby.”  

“He won’t. I won’t let that happen.” I kiss her temple. She takes a steadying breath and clicks send. 

“There.” 

“Better?” 

“No.”  

I chuckled.  “Ok. Well, we have until the beginning of May to make this work.” I sat up and grabbed my phone. “I won’t know what our schedule is then because that is playoffs.  But during our Christmas break, we should know what the baby is, and we can paint their room.”  I studied my phone but it's quiet and I look at Leia and she has tears streaming down her face.  “Princess, what’s wrong?” 

“Nothing,” she squeaks.  “It's just... you’re planning on a room?” 

“Of course, I am. Leia,” I put my phone down. “This is my niece or nephew and I love them as if they were my own. I was thinking about the room between ours, that way both of us can listen for them.  That leaves the two guest rooms at the end of hall free for people when they come over.”  

Leia launches herself at me and I catch her, making sure she isn’t hurt. “Thank you, Andy, so much.  I was so scared, but you are making me feel better about this.”  

“Hey, you’re my best friend. I would do anything for you.” I rub her back as she cries, wishing i could do more.  After a few minutes, she starts to calm down and I pull back.  “Ready to go meet Luke?” 

She shakes her head but squeaks out a yes. “He’s going to be so mad at me.”  

“He’s not going to be mad at you.  If anything, I don’t think six thousand miles is enough distance for Luke not to go out and kick Bret’s ass.” I laugh as she giggles. “C’mon, the faster we do this, the faster we can eat.”  

Leia and I had decided that it would probably be best to meet Luke in a public place to prevent a blow up. Well, its wishful thinking that we might prevent it but here we go.  I drove us to the restaurant, praying this was going to be ok.  I really didn’t want Leia to have to deal with her brother.  As I’ve said before, Lucas Andrews is a protective bastard and would do anything to make sure his sister was happy. I got us in and saw him sitting in a booth in the back.  He raised his hand, and I walked Leia over. “Just breathe, Princess.”  

“Hey Barber, Cubby,” giving both of us a hug.  We ordered, and small talked for a bit.  Leia’s leg was bouncing, and she was staring at her drink, biting her lip.  “Ok sis, what is going on?”  She snapped her head up. “You’re bouncing.  What’s going on?” 

Leia looked at me and I nodded.  She looked at her brother and took a shaky breath. “I got sick over the road trip.”  

“I know that.” Luke took a sip. “You had a fever.”  

“No. I mean, yes but it wasn’t a regular sickness.” Leia tried to keep the tears i could see from flowing. “I was throwing up on the trip, so I took a test with Stella and...” she hesitated and looked down.  “I’m pregnant.” 

“What?” Luke looked at me and I nodded. “You’re pregnant?” I could see the color rising from his neck.  “Who is the father?” He looked at me again and I shook my head.  Leia was crying and wouldn’t look at her brother. “Leighton, look at me.” She shook her head, so he reached over and gently grasped her chin to turn her head.  “Is it Bret?” Her bottom lip trembled, and she barely nodded before Luke exploded. “Son of a bitch!” He stood up and walked out of the restaurant as Leia began to sob. I wrapped an arm around her to let her cry as I watched my best friend walk out of the restaurant.  

“I’m sorry Leia. I’m so sorry,” I whispered as she cried. I let her go. “Stay right here. I’ll be right back.”  I walked out to the front where Luke was pacing. “Get your ass back in there Andrews,” I growled.  

“How could she be so stupid?  How could she let that ass wipe do this to her?” He ran his hands through his hair. “She’s just starting her business and the season and... FUCK!” He kicked a sign over.  

“That is enough Lucas.  Your sister needs you.  She was so scared to tell you.  I had to convince her to come.  You are confirming her worse fears.  She’s going to need you.  Your niece or nephew is going to need you.”  

“How long have you known?” 

“The day after the road trip.  I made her go to the doctor this morning to confirm.”  

He gave me a look and I could see his heart crack.  He ran back in and I followed.  He went right up to her and pulled her into his arms.  “Oh Cubby, I’m sorry, I’m not mad at you Leia.” He hugs her tight as she starts to sob again.  “Fuck, I screwed that up.” They hold each other for a few minutes, and I get us refills. I walk back as they start talking.  

“I sent him an email, but I refuse to move or give up my baby.” Leia has her determined face on.  “I can keep working, that’s what the doctor said but try and avoid being on the ice.”  

“You gonna tell management?” 

“I’m going to have to but I’m not going to tell anyone else.  Not until I can’t avoid it anymore.” She shrugs as she shoves a fry in her mouth.  I’m happy her appetite is back.  

“I mean, that’s your right,” he says.  “What about mom?” He grimaces as Leia rolls her eyes.  

“I guess I’ll tell her but I don’t want her involved.  She was like, obsessed with Bret and loved that he wanted me to be a housewife.” She shuddered at the thought.  “Imagine me as a stay at home mom.  I’ll destroy the house myself just to get away from that.”  

Their mom was not the same after their dad died.  She had been the typical hockey mom up until then.  After, she cared a little too much about her children.  Especially Leia, since she assumed that Leia would be more like her. But Leia is like her father, ambitious and driven, and she had always shunned the idea of just being a housewife. I really love that about her.  That she wanted it all and not just be a support system.  

“Yeah, i get that.  Miranda is the same way.” Luke sighed. “I gotta talk to her about this and about you moving in to the house and stuff.”  He took a long pull of his beer as Leia and I stopped to look at him.  I looked at her and she cleared her throat.  

“Actually, Flyboy, I’m going to stay with Andy.” Luke looks confused now. “What? But...” Her phone rings and she checks it before getting up. “I have to take this.”  

Luke turns to me as soon as she walks away from the table.  “Are you ok with this?” 

I shrug.  “Of course I am.  I offered.  Dude,” i grasp his shoulder, “I promised you I would take care of her if she ever needed me.  I’m keeping that promise.”  

Luke pulls me in for a hug. “Thanks man.”   

“I’ll always be there for the Andrews siblings.”  

If only he knew that i wanted more with his sister.  That i wanted her to be my girl.  That I wanted to be the father of her baby.  That they were my family.  

He would kill me on the spot.
