Hey Amy! Thanks so much for this story, you've created a world so immersive and colorful, and I am on the edge of my seat for what comes next!

I just wanted to ask if we will we learn what happened in the days between the vote and fight night?

Did MC and Seven not talk and clear things up with each other after the votation? I don't understand why Seven would have an outburst like that if they and MC managed to discuss the issue of Seven being taken off lead vocals. I thought the two were bestfriends and/or partners? How do two people so "attached" to each other not talk about such a huge decision? Did Seven or MC just go poof after the vote, only to return the night of the party?

I understand that it may be spoiler-y for you to answer, but I just wanted to clear things up and develop a timeline. I think knowing what happened between the vote and the party will help me (and perhaps other players) understand if Seven's actions were warranted.

I mentioned this in passing but Seven sort of kept their feelings down for the sake of the band until they couldn’t take it anymore. So outwardly Seven was trying their best to be okay with it even if they weren’t. They didn’t go “poof” they were still around and tried to do the background vocals thing and realized they’re useless in the band, which sort of made how they felt about it even worse. Seven did try. They hated it, but they tried. And no matter how attached two people are, there will always be some things harder to talk about than others.

I mean…Seven can sort of say the same too? “How can someone who claims to be attached to me be okay with this when they know all I wanted was to be a lead singer?”

Seven didn’t want to ruin anything but they also couldn’t keep their feelings down for too long. Of course they talked about it but it was more that they didn’t go deeper than what it was.

Basically, if they talked about how sev felt about it, it would’ve been:

Mc: “are u okay with this?”

7: “yeah whatever”

So two problems here: 1) MC didn’t inquire further and 2) 7 didn’t share how they really felt. 7 was obviously bothered but if they said they’re alright… there’s not much MC can do if 7 insists they’re fine even when it’s obvious they’re not

Then having an outburst in that way was more from the alcohol lmao instead of sharing their feelings calmly, it was more of a dam that broke.

Like I said, it’s a lot of nuances and just,,,,very messy haha

Really, they expected you to desert the moment you stepped foot into this place.

At least they're not unnecessarily cruel...which is the most you can hope for here.

Ivan [m] or Iris [f] [RO]: coming from the most powerful military family, I's bloodline has made them the most sought-after student in the school. Your mother also killed their father, so it is no surprise they hate your guts. They are at the top of the rankings, which means they are a bully, but a dangerous one. And they will not make your time here easy.

Marshall [m] or Maureen [f] [RO]: the bumbling, happy-go-lucky recruit that came in the same day as you. No one knows how the shy and easily scared M got into Stonewall...must be because they're from a line of powerful commanders. Still, they are nothing like their family, and you feel bad knowing the students are going to eat them alive. Stonewall will likely kill them before this year ends. Not your problem, right?

Enzo [m] or Eris [f][RO]: the child of the High Commander. No one wants to cross them, so no one talks to them. They are isolated like you but in a different way: they are fawned over while simultaneously being avoided. It seems like you may just be E's only ally in here (or not).

THE RIVAL

It didn’t start off as a rivalry. But you and Nikita/Navarro/Nevada Tallon weren’t the best of friends either. The two of you started at the same football academy, and whilst you were signed for an extra year, they were rejected. That was their first loss. For a while, they lost their dream. Forever: they lost you. Now it’s different. They’re all grown up and they’ve found a football team to call their own — A.C. United — the football team that happens to be the rival to yours. Football is full of history, it’s full of emotion too — and you and N have plenty of that to give, both on and off the pitch. Their one goal is to win. The two of you are, once again, fighting for the same crown. To be the best footballer in the city. Maybe even the world.

Maybe things will be different this time around between you two. The stone-cold glares and the snide remarks could dissolve into something else. Into something real and something beyond hatred.

THE TEAMMATE

You’re the newcomer. You’re waltzing into a team that’s somewhat established already, so having a teammate like Léa/Lando/Lakelyn Santos (their gender matches your mc's) to ease you in is always welcome. They’re the captain of Inter City and they’re a bit of a media darling. Graceful on the pitch, and even more graceful to the press. They’re confident, assured, calm and collected. But, beneath all that lies something else. It’s been a while since someone’s seen the real them. They were burned in the past, all because of a well documented break-up that took a lot out of them. Since then, L has been sworn off of falling for another athlete again, and they're keeping everyone at an arm's length. Beyond football, it’s not easy to get close to them.

But if you did, what a powerful couple that would grace the footballing world.

THE BEST FRIEND 

You know how hard it is to be an athlete. Milan St. Clair knows it too. Since becoming best friends in your twenties, you know you’ve both had the same goal. Whilst they are trying to conquer the tennis world and you’re making it in football, they’re the one constant that remains. The one who is familiar and comforting. Maybe the two of you could’ve been something more, or maybe your passionate personalities for your sports just got in the way. Milan’s rising through the tennis ranks now, they’re becoming more known. Their game continues to improve more than anyone ever expected. They have Grand Slams in their sights.

THE IDOL

THE HEIR

Estelle/Evren/Everest Acevedo. They’ve been involved in football all their life, but not in the same way you have. Their father is your new manager. E has riches, fame, and a powerful last name — but take it from them, it’s not all its cracked up to be. They’re in a world that’s entirely their own, they model, sing and now their passion has shifted to wanting to write a bestselling novel. Their life has been a whirlwind, and honestly, if the world came with an off switch they’d hit it immediately. But they like to have their fun: their sharp tongue, constant media presence, and attraction to chaos means they ignore their father’s footballing legacy and will continue to make a name for themselves. E has been branded as trouble and it's a current name they quite like.

There’s more to E than meets the eye, and they’re desperate for someone to see it. Give them a chance, peel back the confident persona. You’ll be pleasantly surprised…

Answering some bulk questions

I am getting the same kind of questions in my inbox and instead of answering them all individually, I thought I would just make one long post. Hopefully that can clear some things up.

Why is m!pen white and f!pen black?

Mostly because the character of Pen is death. They have no form. Not a real one. Much like the MC, the image they are presenting is a construct. So, when I thought about that, I kind of thought it would be fun to play around with two very different aesthetics (I think in the final edit I might even write them a bit different). I did this for two reasons. One, because I haven't really seen this in ifs. And two, I kind of liked the duality of it. Opposites, really. It sat well with me for the character of death.

2. Why does nothing bad ever happen to Milo? Stop playing favorites.

Bad things have happened to Milo. More so than the other characters, I would argue. I have a feeling this is more from people annoyed that a very specific bad thing won't happen to Milo. Because Milo has watched Malcolm and MC die. Was beaten as a child. Orphaned. Didn't know where his real home was or who he was. Has a ghost for a sister. (who he also watched die). Has been responsible for keeping his best friend sane for quite a few years. And got the shittiest job in the world. He has also been stabbed at quite a bit. Betrayed. And used.

I do a lot of bad things to Milo. Favorites would be if nothing bad happened to him. And defending your characters decisions is not playing favorites. It is just knowing your characters as a writer.

3. Who is your favorite RO?

I have said before that Milo is not my favorite to write. So inevitably I get asked who is. I don't answer this question because I don't want the complaints.

4. Why don't you have stats?

Because I don't like them. I come from much more of a storytelling perspective than a game mechanics one. And don't get me wrong. People that do game mechanics are awesome. I admire them a ton and enjoy their games (though my field is more video games). But that's never what I wanted the Night Market to be. I just want people to be immersed.

5. Do you feel you have to have inclusivity as a writer?

I don't know why I've been getting this one a lot. Might be something going on in the community. The honest answer is no, I do not. I have never felt pressured to have a certain representation within the Night Market. That all being said, maybe I don't feel that way because I tend to have an organically more diverse cast of characters? But I can't say I have ever felt like I have to put a certain representation in. And I don't believe writers should feel pressure for that. Because a lot of times, if you are just putting in a token character to do it, it becomes a bit problematic.

6. What are your favorite IF's and do you have recomendations?

I hate to say this, but I don't read IF's. I've dabbled occasionally in the past but I find when I read IF's, it messes with my head and my ability to write. Now, I read a lot of novels. That is my preferred vehicle of reading. But as for IF's, I probably won't read a lot of them until I am officially done with the Night Market. I struggle to enjoy stories when I feel like it is a part of my day to day job.

7. Why don't you ever speak out politically?

Because that is private for me. I don't want to. I want to provide an escape from the world. Not add to discussions that are being had by people far more adept than me. I leave my political feelings and responsibilities at home.

8. Why can't you provide (insert numerous topics) to the route?

Because coding and writing are a bitch. There is a lot of work that goes into this stuff that isn't always fun. And sometimes, as much as I would like to put something in or have a new route, I just can't. I am one person. A person who has a pretty hefty personal life. I am doing what I can.

Because I'm a huge sucker for fluff I have to ask; What's something MC could say/do that would make the ROs feel all gooey inside?

Oh I do love these types of asks. Since idk which you mean, I'll take the sfw option for "feel all gooey inside"

Riley: Surprisingly difficult to make flustered as they'll take outright flirting as a joke. But subtle things will make them think of you for a very very long time. A small touch when you're trying to move past them is big, they'll focus on the spot your fingers were at for hours. For more direct ways you can defend them. Not even physically but if someone says something bad about them, or even slightly below neutral, then calling that person out on their shit (Before Riley gets a chance to) will make the, flustered and retreat.

Franco: He loves to make people flustered. If you blush easily he'll focus on seeing what he could do to make your ears red or to make you stumble over your words. But flirt back at the right time, make him lose momentum when doing so and he probably wont be able to regain composure for hours. You seriously just need to sit back and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike. (He also likes being ordered around just a bit but you didn't hear that from me.)

Verne: They're a little possessive, ngl. They handle it well and don't show it but it doesn't stop them from being jealous when they shouldn't be. If you're together then phrases like "I'm yours" will make them smile. If you really want to make them go wild wear their jacket or shirt, especially in public.

Mitch: Help him with a project. He works on his car a lot. If you come in and just spend time with him it'll make the time go by a lot quicker. but if you actually help him, even if he has to teach you something or if you have to teach him something, he'll really enjoy it. That night he'll be almost asleep and just remember small touches when passing tools, eye contact over the engine. He'll remember you grease stained and sweating and he'll have a hard time going back to sleep.

Sigourney: Chivalry goes a long ways. Make her feel important and that you care and she'll fall for you pretty quick. But don't stop at her, she wants to feel important but doesn't want you to step on other people to do it. If one day she leave home and sees you feeding a stray cat or something she'll go back inside and scream into a pillow.

Dame: Legitimately at this moment in time? Just pay attention to them. Come back from the shop with their favorite coffee and they'll hold on to it until it goes cold. When you're together they like breathy whispers a lot. Like a lot a lot. Lean in and say something (even innocuous and innocent) and they'll refuse to look you in the eye.

Rebel: Rebel wants to you see you at your best. Especially if you're physically exerting yourself. It doesn't matter what it is but if she watches muscles strain she'll refuse to look away, afterwards your touch on her will make her go wild. (if you've got someone's blood on you when you do she'll never let go.)

How would the Ros react if someone insulted them and MC who is just a ball of sunshine and can be fairly airheaded is now the complete opposite? Their usual sunny and absent minded self now has a look that is cold, calculating, malicious and promises nothing but pain.

💛 Marcel 

While Marcel watched you, he would feel gratitude fill his body to the brim, but it would be overcome with responsibility. He didn't need you, sweet and innocent you, talking in such a way on his behalf. 

Marcel would cut in. "Sorry, sir, but we are done here." He said, talking to the red-faced man, who seemed more embarrassed by the second. 

So, with a gentle touch, he will pull you away. "Thank you, my love." He said when he noticed a little pout on your face since you didn't get to finish your angry ramble. 

However, it became happy again when Marcel kissed you, and he hoped that he would never have to go against your wrath. 

🧡 Margaret 

Margaret's heart would beat a mile a minute as she watched you. She didn't like fights. She hated them. And you were in one because of her, even if it was just words she didn't like it. Margaret cared about you too much for you to get hurt over her. 

When you turn back to her, she had tears in her eyes as she jumped into your arms. 

"Don't ever do that again." 

"Margaret?" 

"I don't ever want you to get hurt because of me." 

Margaret would calm down after a while and thank you for defending her, but she would make it clear that she didn't like you fighting; you were too important to her.

Owen would watch as you went at the person, cutting them down with your words in amusement. He is a protector. Hell, he is a wrath demon. Owen is the one who is supposed to protect you, and here you were protecting him. 

Adorable you, who couldn't even swing a sword, was protecting him. 

Owen would watch with a clenched fist watching the scenario unfold. He was ready to step in if you needed him, but before he knew it, the person was walking away. 

You turned to him with a look of pride. "What a jerk." 

When you noticed his clenched fist. "What's wrong-" 

Owen would pick you up and throw you over his shoulder. 

"Owen?!" 

"I didn't know you had it in you, lass/duck/lad. That had to be the hottest thing I ever seen." 

You blushed. "What are we doing?" 

"I'm going to go and thank you." 

💙 Rosemary 

She would be in a daze. She didn't usually like people defending her, not when she could do it herself. But when you, sweet you, were defending her, she could just feel her knees go weak. 

It showed you cared, not because she would owe you something afterward; with your kind nature, that thought would never cross your mind. Rosemary knew that for sure.

When you turned back to her, she was fanning her face before regaining her composure.

"Well, aren't you just a knight in shining armor, handsome/dollface/angel face?" 

Rosemary would bring you in for a heated kiss that would make you melt.

Shocked. Tai's own words could usually take anyone down, but before he could even utter a sentence, you had taken over. 

Where has this been hiding inside you? And why did he like it? 

He liked how passionate you were about him. 

Tai's eyes widened in shock even after you turned around and dragged him away. 

Tai would probably be in shock for a while until you brought him out of it and he would grab your hand. 

"Thank you." With sincerity in his eyes, that could knock anyone back.

So smug. Zane has never had anyone stand up for him before. To see you spitting venom at this person would send a thrill through his spine. 

With a smug smile, he would put an arm around you as you berated the person, maybe even helping you out. When the person in question left, you turned back to your boyfriend, who just brought you close and kissed you. 

The hot temper from only a few seconds ago melts away as Zane's fingers rubbed into your hips. 

"Now aren't you full of surprises, Little Lion?" You gave him a shy blush, and Zane just chuckled.

"Don't worry. I liked it."

WE DID IT! After a few weeks of wait and talks, I can finally announce that Scales of Justice has been officially accepted for publication, both on Hosted Games and on Steam! The current publication date is set for January 2025; however, if that changes, I will update you with new information.

I am so, so grateful to everyone who has been here for me during these past 3 years. What began as a shy attempt at dreaming has grown into a marvelous project that taught me so much, brought me so many new experiences and skills, and is going to end with my first publication as an author. I cannot be more grateful and excited. I hope this is only the beginning of an amazing journey.

I am currently finishing my degree and working on preparing for the release; however, I will soon be posting a little more of my thoughts about future projects (including SoJ 2), continuing Torn Page, and being a bit more active around here. DEMO DESCRIPTION:

Scales of Justice is a fantasy story that takes place in a world afar – a place called Therania. Albeit there was some interaction between Therania and other worlds a long time ago, now it’s solely a tale from their lost past… or, at least, that is the most common belief. Regardless, this story does not focus on extraterrestrial connections: its plot revolves around the people of Therania and their lives, their history and – what’s more important – their ‘determined’ future.

There are plenty of species living together in Therania, yet the human race is currently split in two: the one known as Hero kingdom, which is ruled by ‘heroes’, and the one named Vannais kingdom, controlled by ‘villains’. Both nations hate each other - here, the fight of ‘good’ and ‘evil’ is something that happens on a national level. The game is focused on lore, character development, and the player's choices: perhaps, your MC just wants to live a peaceful life... or maybe they want to save the world.

Or even rule it, if you’re into such things.

THINGS TO DO IN THIS DEMO:

Set off on a new adventure towards Neutral Lands, to meet a mythic creature of all answers - The Visionary.

Play as a woman, man, or non-binary - straight, gay, or asexual.

Gather up to 3 companions to help you in your quest - befriend, romance, or rival them, the choice is yours.

Buy a horse - we know you want one.

Fight, conjure, support, speak or think - choose your way of handling a tricky situation.

Explore the kingdom of Hero up to Menai's shores, in search for someone - or something - to aid you in your journey.

The DEMO version of the book runs up to Chapter 5 and contains 276K words overall.

RO DESCRIPTIONS:

Shoren/Seile → Heir to the Hero kingdom’s throne, right where your journey starts. Also, your old friend who’s very attached to you. Likes to read and practices magic, enjoys adventure and heroic deeds. A recognised “hero”, with blonde curly hair, pale skin and a pair of sapphire eyes.

Robert/Reina → Order’s Paladin, defender of Hero and Knight of Fate. Brave and honourable, determined to protect the people of the kingdom. Very loyal to friends and very dangerous as an enemy. Has short brown hair, tanned skin and an athletic build.

Valerius/Venis → An Outworlder caught by cultists in the Wicked Woods. Gracious, elegant and charismatic. Has long dark brown hair with a silver streak, olive skin and golden eyes.

Arion/Aria → Leader of Vannais, a recognised “villain” who escaped from Hero and now rules the enemy kingdom. Serious but temperamental. Prefers action over words and so, is always present on battlefields and amidst negotiations, even if in an unofficial manner. Has short blonde hair, pale skin and emerald eyes.

The ROs are pretty self-explanatory. Stevie will go out of her way to protect, defend and make excuses for the MC. Angel enables horribly irresponsible decisions. Lincoln could technically be classified as a stalker. Zima is Zima.

j park: while they had feelings for the MC from the moment they met as kids, the moment they knew was when MC gave them their lunch after defending J from the bullies. it was MC’s favourite food, yet they gave it away because J had told them earlier that they skipped breakfast.

t kaufmann: when they started getting hints that the killer’s next victim will probably be someone from the hospital, all they could focus on was keeping the MC safe and close to them. all those occupants and employees in the hospital and the only person the detective truly wanted to protect was the MC.

vivienne malhotra: she’s the type of person to journal a lot when her feelings spiral too much. you can only guess how she knew when she tried to write down what she felt for the MC but she started rambling and listing out everything she loved about them 😭

sebastián navarro: similar to J, he started having feelings for the MC from the moment they met. the moment he knew was when he visited the hospital to get a prescription for meds and couldn’t stop subconsciously smiling when his eyes landed on the MC.

Tracy uses her mind control powers for good sometimes (she'll deny it if you catch her doing it). If she walks by a couple at night that are both thinking they want to kiss, but neither is brave enough to go for it... she'll nudge.

Marcel never learned how to drive and at this point he's decided he's just going to wait until cars go out of fashion rather than learn. It can't be more than a hundred years or so... not too long.

Iliya loves the old ladies at his book club and will defend them violently if he has to.

Freya still talks to ghosts of loved ones who died years ago. Her great uncle in particular is very chatty.

Ravima Penrose sucks at art. Seriously. Can't do anything. Considering how long they've been doing it, that in of itself is something of an achievement. But they love it so much that they don't care.

Erin's favourite vampire power is wall walking. She spidermans around her apartment when no one is watching.

How would the ROs feel about hearing an MC who is usually a sweet ball of tender sunshine get feisty with someone badmouthing the RO? Cuz sometimes our protectors need to be protected. 🥺

Not me coming back to asks because I gave up coding for the night-

Rook: He's...conflicted. He's seen flashes of this side of you before, but seeing you defend him? He doesn't deserve, and in his mind, they're probably right in some way. There's no reason to bare your teeth for him, especially when you're not normally like this. And yet. It's hard to deny the way his heart squeezes. When has anyone but you bothered to protect him?

Beck: He's uncharacteristically quiet. When you take his hand and the two of you leave the situation, you barely catch the 'thank you.' His head feels a little fuzzy. He's no stranger to the things people say about him, but it's been a long time since there was someone by his side to get him through it. He wants to protect you, especially if you're going to protect him.

Rhea: "You don't need to waste your energy on them." Rhea hasn't even glanced their way. She's used to it all. She's frigid, she's distant, she's a rich bitch who got in because of her dad's influence. There's no reason to acknowledge it. But when she sees how much it upsets you, she wraps her hands around your own and squeezes them. "Thank you for standing up for me, though."

Zoe: They feel nothing at the insults. They've known these their whole life, just like any magician who can't use magic. It's the same old script, but to you, it must all be so new. They wrap their arms around you, hugging you from behind. Their voice is a whisper, "It's alright MC. I'm ok." Their heart beat is even against your back, arms beckoning you to leave. They don't want you to waste their breath. Not on those who will never change.

Lars: Surprisingly, he'd let you. If someone tried to say shit like "Oh, you're letting yourself be protected now--" He'd level them with a threat to finally drive them off. When they're gone, he takes your face in his hands, and you half suspect a scolding. He isn't sure what he's feeling, and ultimately, he only sighs frustrated before dropping his hands and walking away. It's a waste of energy to protect him, but he liked it when you showed teeth. You're always surprising him.

???: You except something. The usual teasing or them stepping in with their own harsh words. Instead, they stare at you. But it's not really at you, it's through you. Their thoughts are far away, trapped in the past within the body of a lonely child. When you call their name, they snap back and shake their head with a laugh, "I didn't know you could sound like that, little moon." They reach for you, taking your hand, and pulling you into a run, away from whoever was bothering the both of you. And maybe to give themselves time to return to themselves.

So, what would ROs do if suddenly someone arrived and started yelling at them, saying stupid things or something like that. But when they are about to do something, Mc steps in and defends the ROs.

S: S is typically the problem solver, and more often than not, they're stepping in to defend Taj after a "impolite" comment or a blunt remark. So, when a particularly belligerent person turns on them, they're equipped with a sharp comment they hope will be enough to put the situation to bed.

But then, you jump in. You place yourself in the firing line, and S is in awe. With no fear, you're shouting back at the stranger. Still, their instinct doesn't go away, and S readies themselves to pull you away.

"You're braver than most, MC, but please do not put yourself in harm's way on my behalf. I can suffer a million cutting words to keep you safe."

Rain: Rain has extensive experience keeping the peace, but rarely is a person's temper directed at them. Rain's training kicks in as they desperately try to placate the individual, but when their ire doesn't wane, they begin to panic. Then, you're there, standing between them and the person, making yourself look as big as possible as you fervently defend their honour.

Rain could kiss you. "You're a warrior, MC, and I'm awed by your strength."

Taj: Taj is used to being the hot head. They've suffered enough of S's lectures because of it. So, when someone gets in their face, they're getting right back in theirs. So, it takes them by surprise when you step between them and their current nuisance. But don't expect to be in the fight alone for long. Suddenly, they're riffing off your energy as you work together to put down the person's stupidity.

You work surprisingly well together when your goals are aligned.

Once you've successfully demoralised the individual in question, there's an awkward moment of silence. Until... "Erm... you didn't have to do that, but... thanks, I guess."

You can't help but tease them. "Wow, I'm impressed, Taj. You finally learned basic manners."

"Fuck you. I'm never saying it again." Then, together, you laugh.

N: N learned to dismiss the thoughts and opinions of angry people a long time ago. How many times have they pointedly ignored an angry tirade? In their youth, if someone gave them a long list of things they absolutely shouldn't be doing, you better believe they would do every single one of them.

So, the person screaming in their face might as well be a chihuahua; N has faced their parent's anger undaunted after all. This... this is nothing. Yet, suddenly, it becomes much more interesting when you jump into their fray, attempting to defend their honour. They can't believe it. They don't deserve it. Still, they want to remember it.

"You're a vision, my dear. A demon with a knight in shining armour. What has the world come to, hm? It's so sugary it makes me want to do something naughty."

Umbra: Umbra is stubborn; there's no denying it. Try to get past them at your own peril because there's no way they're going to let the MC stand between them and danger. That's Umbra's job. You're much too precious, much too important, far more important than them. They would never forgive themselves if something happened to you for the sake of them.

"Please, MC, I'm nobody. Their words can't hurt me. Their disdain doesn't touch me. I can take the brunt of it all. Baring your bruises for you is what keeps me alive."
