Chapter 25 // Part 16: North Carolina II

She glances over and sees Mae still running, eyes locked on nothing but the path forward, the gun gripped tightly in her hand as she allows Beth to keep hold of her forearm, to keep her close and at the same pace. She is pale and sweaty and breathless, but she is still running.  Not her, Beth thinks. Not her, not her, not her. They can’t have her! Daryl, I’m so close, just 300 more miles. We didn’t make it all this way to die now, for you to never know how hard I tried to get back to you. We’re so close! And then the shrill woman’s voice is all around them. “Pretty little things, come home to Daddy!”

🧐 Simeon is Nightbringer and the signs have been there from the beginning! 🧐

I actually wasn’t sure they were going to go with the, “Simeon falls and becomes a demon” route as it seemed a bit repetitive since it already happened to the brothers. Now that it’s been confirmed he’s becoming a demon, I feel more confident to post this theory.

Simeon has always been on my list of NB candidates so these thoughts have been rolling around in my head for quite some time.

Below the cuts are my thoughts on how Simeon could be NB and why we were sent, “to the past”.

1. Nightbringer goes by many names. Simeon has a pen name for when he writes, nicknames from the brothers, and several different titles throughout his tenure in the Celestial Realm (aka demoted to archangel was a seraphim).

2. Where did Lesson 80 leave off in the OG? It was about Simeon becoming human and everyone finding out. They truly were continuing NB from the OG.

3. Nightbringer created the Fountain. The fountain contains books. Simeon is a writer.

4. He was literally in that illusion Nightbringer made for Solomon. Solomon’s conversation with NB strongly suggests NB wasn’t always a demon.

5. The storyline in NB is different from what we know of the past for a reason. This could be due to Simeon’s laments of not falling with the brothers. This is Simeon’s do over.

6. The ring of light, which Simeon stole and was the catalyst for his fall plays a role in Nightbringer.

7. Leviathan and MC are transported into an early TSL world in the beginning of NB. This could be a hint that we were thrown into a world that Simeon created.

8. Simeon is prophetic. NB is known to see through the past, present, and future. Simeon’s writings, IMO, reflect a combination of the past, present, and future. Some of them are prophetic.

9. Nightbringer is invested in MC’s happiness. Simeon stole the ring of light for MC’s survival so it’s not a stretch for him to also feel this way.

I believe we ended up in one of Simeon’s written worlds. More precisely, an alternate type of timeline where he was able to visit the brothers soon after their fall and be there for them. A world where both he and MC help the brothers to adjust to life in the Devildom.

Perhaps it was a shared dream to everyone else in the current timeline and they don’t remember it.

What are the consequences that the characters received after the ritual?

Some details in the old lore docs (dated 2017-2018) were updated/changed over time. Lots of plot points were never used, multiple versions of the same backstory contradict each other. Anyway, this is the gist of it:

Lucio

Gave: Old body and orchestrated the dinner but did a bad job

Received: His body was burned up by the devil, the new one got swiped by Asra because Lucio didn’t follow through, and Asra technically can claim Lucio’s soul. He is stuck in liminal space as part goat part ghost.

Asra

Gave: his memory of that night’s spell to the Magician, and Lucio’s soul to the Devil. Split his heart and gave half to resurrect MC.

Received: New body for MC 

Nadia

Gave: Her memories of the last 6 years

Received: Regained prophetic dreams

Julian

Gave: memories that burdened him

Received: ability to heal and to take other people's wounds

Muriel

Gave: his fear

Received: the ability to be forgotten

Following a Trail of Clues

                Lots of plots have at least some aspect of figuring out a mystery or uncovering some hidden truth. While it may not be a traditional murder mystery, writing a plot that revolves around the gathering of information and uncovering of clues can be written using a lot of the same techniques.

1. You should probably plan it

If you’re strictly a pantser, give it a shot, but I have never been able to pants mysteries like this. I would recommend planning it from the beginning and saving yourself a lot of time and headaches trying to piece it together later.

2. Start with the beginning and end

When planning a mystery, I start with the beginning, and then skip to the point that they uncover the truth or figure it out and work backwards to fill out the middle. What is the last hint they need to uncover the full truth, then, what leads to that hint, rinse and repeat until we get back to that beginning you created.

                For example, say the MC is trying to find their missing friend. The last point would be ‘they find their friend’, so that’s where we begin. Maybe right before that, they’re told the location, to get their location, they’ve kidnapped one of the bad guys who knows it, to get to him, they need to break into the evil lair, to find the lair, they need to spy on the organization, and so on.

3. Diversify the hints

I talk about this a bit in my post about written elements (here), but essentially, you’ll want to diversify how your characters get their hints. It will seem cheap if they find everything they need to know on conveniently spaced notes or journal entries (unless you can really justify that), or it’s all told to them by someone who happens to know it all (such as the ‘wise man’ trope).

                Maybe they find the last clue written down, but the one before was told to them from a key character, and the one before was puzzled out through a riddle, etc. etc. Here are some places to find clues:

Someone else knows something

This could be either an ally or an enemy. Family members, friends they weren’t aware of, a hidden partner, seemingly a stranger who knows more than they’re letting on. If they are an ally, there should be a reason they haven’t come forward yet, or justification for why their testimony is where it is in a story. Maybe they are somewhat accidentally guilty in the mystery, maybe they are afraid to be involved, maybe they aren’t aware anything has happened at all.

If they’re an enemy, maybe your protagonists need to corner them, best them in a battle, talk to them away from their boss, kidnap them, etc. Consider why this person would betray their ‘side’ to provide a clue to the protagonists.

Journal entries, notes, letters, ledgers, or otherwise written down

Physical evidence—footprints, pieces of clothing left behind, an object, photos, drawings

Biological evidence--fingerprints, DNA, hair, etc. If your character already has access to the equipment for this, great! If not, consider how they could find this out.

A prophetic dream or vision (use in cases in which it would make sense for your character to have this, obviously)

A riddle, poem, or song, if you can justify it.

An educated guess (for small jumps)

Timing—if they can figure out a timeline, they may be able to figure out something else

Something is missing or off place. That’s odd, character always leaves their book on the bedside table, so why isn’t it there?

Herbalist MC Part 1

I feel like Solomon is one of the first to recognize their skills. They were using the kitchen in Purgatory Hall instead of the one at the House of Lamentation (it was under repair once again) to prepare a human-safe cream for their dry skin.

"What's this? Is my dear apprentice finally taking a hands on interest in sorcery?" Solomon steps into the kitchen when he hears glass clinking and someone clattering around noisily, usually a sure sign someone was preparing a meal. This time, however, it was you.

He takes a look around. The pleasant floral scent over calendula fills the air. There's a massive pot on the stove, something boiling furiously inside. Curiously, the lid is on upside down with a plastic bag of melting ice on top.

On the other side of the kitchen, a glass jar lays tipped over on the granite countertop, golden flower heads scattered on the counter. That must have been the source of the glass he heard moments ago.

You look over at him with a slight grin as you sweep the fallen petals from the counter into a clean bowl. "No, this is all human world stuff. I'm going to make a cream for my hands. Asmo keeps scolding me for letting them get so dry."

Solomon hums softly. It had been many decades since he himself had practiced human medicine. No longer familiar with herbalism techniques, he steps inside and pulls out a stool to watch. "You don't mind if I stick around, do you?"

"No, that's fine with me! Just don't touch anything. I know what I'm doing and if you mess with anything I might not be able to fix it."

He's content to just watch in peaceful silence for now. You do seem to know what you're doing - you're confident in every movement you make. The moment feels oddly domestic, with you whipping up some interesting concoction and him sitting contentedly to the side, allowing you to work.

Eventually, his curiosity gets the better of him. "You mentioned a hand cream, but what is that on the stove?"

Setting the bowl of petals down on the now clean counter with a quiet clink, you remove the baggie from the lid and dump the water into the sink. "I'm making a hydrosol first," you reply, refilling the baggie with ice from the freezer next to the stove, "to be one of the main ingredients in the cream. Calendula is really good for a lot of different things, but in this case we're mostly focusing on its wound healing properties. It's anti-inflammatory and soothing to dry, cracked skin."

"I see. If I remember correctly, calendula is believed to induce prophetic dreams to protect against theft and burglary. You could certainly use that around a certain brother." Solomon holds his chin in that silly philosophical pose he does so often. "I'm all for experimentation in pursuit of knowledge, but is that pot not a simplified pressure cooker with none of the testing to ensure its safety?"

You giggle and shake your head. "No, it's perfectly safe. Maybe if I wasn't monitoring it, it could be dangerous, but I've done this plenty of times. See, having the lid on would normally create pressure with the water boiling in the bottom, but the ice on top rapidly cools the water vapor, making it drip into a bowl inside the pot. Basically the steam cools down so quickly pressure can't build up."

He nods once more, content with your explanation. For once, he's not the expert and he's willing to learn from you. "Interesting how similar this is to sorcery..." he muses.

"Yeah, I've noticed that." You replace the baggie ice in the lid again. "I think that's why so many herbalists were ostracized or punished for being witches, even if they weren't. The main difference I've seen, now that I've practiced both, is whether there's magic involved or not."

"Or if you're using ingredients native to either the Devildom or the Celestial Realm. Which I suppose is a more specific way of saying there's magic involved," Solomon adds.

Neither of you have much of relevance to say after that. After an hour or so, you remove the finished hydrosol from the pot (ignoring Solomon's gentle teasing about the slightly insane but creative usage of an upside down colander to hold the little glass jar above the boiling herbs) and let it cool before doing anything else.

"Making the hydrosol took longer than I expected, so I don't have time to make the cream today. The hydrosol has to be room temperature before I can start," you say. "And now I also have this super concentrated calendula tea in addition to the hydrosol. Maybe I'll make soap out of it."

"You know how to make soap?" Solomon asks. His gray eyes, normally guarded, widened in disbelief makes you laugh.

"Yeah, it's not hard. I can come over again soon to show you how, if you want." It's a genuine offer. He taught you most of your practical sorcery, so it's only fair for you to teach him ordinary chemistry and herbalism in return. That, and you just enjoy his company.

Solomon grins, openly joyful at the prospect. "Absolutely! I would love that."

"Okay! I'll text you when I have time to come back."

The Arcana HCs: M6 with an insomniac MC

This can go two ways. These two ways are not mutually exclusive

The first is the shared suffering. You're suffering. He's suffering. He will wallow in your suffering with you

He knows how miserable being permanently sleep-deprived is and will take this as his sign to scour his books for sleeping aids

Tests everything out on both of you. Himself first if it seems a little shady

The second is the shared 2 AM hyper obsession with an obscure area of knowledge. Or a passionate debate of conspiracy theories

All it takes is one of you quietly wondering aloud whether faeries use birds in battle the way humans use horses, and if so what kind, for the conversation to take hold

Nobody can come up with theories as rapid fire as he can

Your friends know to be concerned when there is multiple nights' evidence of brainstorming covering loose sheets of paper scattered about the house

Sometimes Julian struggles between being your doctor and your enabler. You will have to decide for him

Every night he tries to fall asleep with you romantically tangled in his limbs. Every night he tosses and turns so much it's impossible

Asra

They cannot relate. At all

He loves sleeping. Sleeping is one of his superpowers. He can fall asleep anytime, anywhere, in any position. He can't image a life otherwise

At first, they try to keep you company whenever you can't sleep, but it quickly becomes obvious that they won't be able to sustain that without also suffering greatly and you hate doing that to him

He also tries getting you to nap with him

They quickly learn that insomnia is not only active at night and that makes you grumpy

There are now three solutions: the first is a series of light sleeping enchantments that he will only use at your request

The second is that they stay up with you during the night to make whatever mischief your heart desires and spend the next day dozing. They tend to travel at night anyways

The third requires some practice, but he teaches you how to enter his dreams. It leaves your body in a sleeping state and lets you spend time together without waking him up

Their dreams are beautiful. They reflect all the marvelous things they've seen, and you're welcomed there with all the love they have for you

He falls asleep with his head or hand on your heartbeat with a smile every night, waiting for you to meet him in his dreams

Nadia

She can relate, for different reasons

It wasn't uncommon for her headaches and prophetic dreams to keep her awake for several nights on end. Being unable to sleep is akin to torture for her

She already has a collection of sleep remedies to try with you. Don't hold back, she will spare no expense to help you rest

She's still getting used to sharing a bed with someone through the night (Lucio had his own wing), but she finds it quite useful to be present for you. And she likes being that close to you for that long

However, there is one small difficulty. She's learned the value of rest the hard way, and because of that she hates being woken up with a passion

The first time you tossed and turned so much that you woke her up on accident, she sent you a full death glare before realizing who woke her up, and how, and why

She still apologizes to you for that

Now she keeps an adjacent chamber stocked with all sorts of calming teas and soothing activities, so you don't have to lie awake completely unloved in the dark

She leaves a light on in there so if she wakes up and can't feel you she can peek over and know you're still nearby

She has the most beautiful voice, and will insist on holding you to her chest as she sings you to sleep each night

Muriel

Sleep was his greatest escape as an orphan on the streets of Vesuvia. Being denied of that escape sounds like cruel and unusual punishment

He's willing to keep you company, but he's a very heavy sleeper and therefore quite difficult to wake up

That, and being woken up is mildly triggering for him. He half expects it to be the gang that used to chase him around

It's easy to underestimate how observant he is. It's not obvious at first, but he's able to quickly pick up on what kinds of days result in a better night's sleep and start subtly nudging you towards them

You fall asleep faster when you've been more physically active. He's inviting you on his patrols around the forest

You get less agitated in the night when you've already done some hard thinking. He collects riddles from Asra and spends evenings solving them with you (nothing so impossible that is keeps you up though)

Your dreams are better when your surroundings are pleasant. He revamps the bed and crafts a few wind chimes to hang outside the window

Inanna keeps you company through the night

He's worried about crushing you, so he just throws an arm over you when it's time to sleep and dozes off to your quiet breathing

Portia

She moves nonstop, all day, every day

Which means that she's one of those people who drops straight into a deep sleep as soon as her head hits the pillow

She's not that hard to wake up, but if she hasn't had her eight hours she's a bumbling, groggy mess

Nobody is more annoyed by this than she is. As sympathetic as she is to your condition, the idea of a powerful magician tortured awake through the night by their own body and mind as they sit broodingly by a darkened hearth is too exciting to pass up

She tries to stay up with you. She really does. She does not succeed

But she can still keep you cozy

She hides little baked treats around the house in Pepi-proof containers with a different riddle for a different location each night

Every morning when she wakes up she checks the box to know right away whether you had a good night's sleep

If you didn't eat it she'll share it with you at breakfast

Pepi is also very comforting. She'll lie on your belly and purr when you can't sleep, or follow you around as you hunt for the pastries in the night

Portia's an aggressive cuddler whose hold gets tighter as the night progresses. It can take quite some effort to escape

Lucio

Staying up late? Hell yeah, it's party time!

What do you mean you don't like being awake late? What do you mean you have trouble sleeping??

Staying up late is easy for him, but so is sleeping in. He has no idea what chronic sleep deprivation is like and is incapable of wrapping his head around it

He starts to get a better picture the more time he spends around you. You're obviously miserable after rough nights and you always look better after getting a nap in

The only way he knows how to make people sleep is by knocking them out, and he doesn't want to do that to you

He's tempted to suggest drinking heavily every night but that sounds like an oopsie just waiting to happen

But he wants to do something

So he relentlessly tells you to stop and sleep whenever you show the slightest signs of exhaustion and guards you from anything that could wake you

This includes throwing a fit every time you yawn and don't immediately lie down

It also includes him carrying light-blocking material in his pack, asking every traveling doctor about sleep aids, and keeping Mercedes and Melchior from playing too loudly while you nap

He prefers to be the little spoon, but he'll switch it up if it'll help you get comfy

that G/MC one that got away ask has me imagining something like that with Tobin. Tobin's comments during dinner about going pro and the level dedication required becoming somewhat prophetic when they end up breaking things off because there just wasn't enough of MC to dedicate to tennis and their relationship at the time. In my head it's not a fight, but it is a necessary and painful conversation that ends it, maybe with Tobin recognizing how things are trending and wanting to mutually end it before things started getting nasty at the same time MC's spotlight was getting bigger? They genuinely try to stay friends, but in the immediate aftermath both sides are pretty raw and by the time Tobin feels safe MC suddenly seems so much farther away.

Flash forward some time and MC's settled into the rhythm of a pro career when their coach/trainer abruptly retires or takes some sort of leave, and they find themself in need of a replacement for their next tournament on relatively short notice. Seems like it's going to be tough until they just happen to run into a familiar face - a certain someone who hasn't made a name for themself in the industry quite yet, but one who knows MC's tennis (singles or doubles) better than most and how they tick better than maybe anyone. The results of the new partnership speak for themselves on the court, but what about off of it....

The complication of ex-tobin as MC's coach and both their careers / dreams once again hinging on their ability to keep it in their pants/keep it profesh and civil after things fell apart previously is too damn good!!!

Yall have been K I L L I N G me with these post-college 'rekindled romance" scenarios (link to the G one) and I am now convinced that if CT:OS ever gets a sequel, these should absolutely become canon.

The journalist who's made a name for themselves in sports reporting for... REASONS, the currently unknown young coach... I feel like for Rayyan, maybe there could be a breakup that resulted from the tension of always competing against each other, and the media pressure that comes with it, plus Rayyan's obsessive drive to be No. 1 (possibly MC's too?)

Not sure about Sam though. Maybe Sam's the only one you're allowed to stay with in the sequel.

It’s spooky season so here are some webtoon recs

apologies in advance for the low quality images some of them are locked behind paywalls now (on the kr app the translated ones should be fine) and I was too lazy to go through all the chapters for the good panels

Ghost Teller- I’m so biased but this is one of my favorite webtoons. Summary in one line: ghosts go to therapy

Real summary: various ghosts (s1 is eastern ghosts, s2 is western ghosts) tell “human stories” (like how we talk abt ghost stories lol). the art is amazing, and all the episodes are all pretty solid. even if some stories are predictable you still feel for the characters (although personally I prefer s1 over s2)

Sweet Home- some of you might have seen it on Netflix but whether you watched it or not I highly recommend the webtoon (I have issues with the adaptation but that’s another story)

basically people suddenly start turning into monsters and the survivors of this apartment try to survive together. except the mc shows signs of becoming one of those monsters which creates unrest amongst the survivors. not going to get too into the monster part bc spoilers but the webtoon explores what people would do for survival so you get to see scummy ppl, kind ppl, all trapped together and try to survive 👍

the art style captures the story’s spooky/horror vibe so well. long summary: mc is the mc of a romance novel but on the day she’s supposed to receive a confession from the male lead, there’s a zombie outbreak. she already read the novel so she knows the story and characters, but literally everybody that’s not the love interests don’t like her bc that’s how the mc of the novel was written. she finds out that the day resets when she dies but she doesn’t really care until someone she doesn’t know the face of saves her and she decides to find that person and make sure they make it out alive

even if you don’t like isekais (I personally don’t) it’s worth a try. it plays around the isekai premise well and the fourth wall moments were just *chef’s kiss* the impact of those moments especially when the webtoon was still ongoing was 🤌

the cast is primarily female characters, and despite the cast being on the slightly larger side, each of them are distinct from one another and the characters designs are very cute and colorful. overall it has an unique premise that it delivers pretty well on

Night of Shadows- kinda underrated tbh. mc has prophetic dreams, creatures from her dreams start appearing irl, and she’s the only one that knows how to deal with them.

mc is great. she’s strong, smart, and knows when not to give a fuck. the other three characters of the main cast are also pretty strongly established, and the plot and pacing are pretty good. this is the only one on the list that’s still ongoing (currently on hiatus after s1)

2023 solar return chart is looking too much scary and crazy for me. My birthday is in June and it’s 2 months ahead but I think the effects have already started to show up in some areas of my life at this moment.

-I think this year, I would be mainly focused on transformations for myself, emotionally and physically.

In this scenario, chaos follows MC everywhere without any logical reason, but REMINER IT DOESN'T HARM MC, ONLY THE PEOPLE AROUND HER. This ability also runs in her family, so if they have a gathering, chaos happens without fail. Additionally, I have a funny scenario in mind where Saeran kidnaps MC to Mint Eye, and as a result, chaos ensues, but MC casually escapes. I search Kofuku and I see some similarities but the idea of MC having this "ability" is actually come from an Disney Show called Milo Murphy's Law

I feel like the poor guy will get rather spooked by this strange ability of yours. He's already prone to getting into some very embarrassing situations without any external force pulling the strings. Do you mean to tell him that he'll have to deal with even more disasters in his daily college life!? It's more humorous than serious, though. He may act a bit startled by it at first, but he's definitely the type to get very curious despite his initial reservations. It baffles him how such a thing could actually happen in reality, and not in fiction. Is it appropriate for him to call you a superhero...? He'll also probably want to try and use this ability of yours for his advantage. Not anything bad... But, hey, maybe, just maybe... you could make his professor miss his bus today? Without a doubt, the most enthralled among all. You might think he'll be the most skeptical one of the bunch, but no. This is a man who has a huge infatuation with the occult we're talking about here. Once he sees actual tangible proof, you have a real annoying observer on your hands. Will ask you dozens and dozens of questions, do his own research in his free time, maybe even ask you to provide him some of your blood samples or something. With your consent, of course. It may become too much to handle for you. But, what you don't need to worry about is Jumin avoiding you or treating you as a threat. He makes it a point to let you know that he will not judge your character based on factors that are out of your control. With his resources, you might even come to learn more about your abilities!

Saeran

He'll be anxious. Much like his brother, but in a more subdued manner. I feel like your constant bad luck would be one of the factors that pushed Ray into choosing you, believe it or not. He can relate to bad things happening around you, while all you can do is watch helplessly. He will also take the effects of your bad luck in stride. Almost to a fault. You'll have to remind him to please take care of himself and not put himself in harm's way because of you. Suit Saeran, on the other hand, will curse you and your ability. He'll definitely think that you are doing it on purpose. That you want him to suffer. He'll ensure that you understand your position beneath him. He hates the feeling of losing control, and that's exactly what drives him mad about you and your stupid bad luck that he can't control, no matter how hard he tries. He will apologize to you for blaming it all on you, though. You can expect him to tell you that he has come to the realization that you had no intention of harming him, and that you possess a good heart. A heart that is too great for someone as dark and rotten as he is. GE Saeran will be way more balanced about it all. It'll take you two some time to figure it out, with him not putting too much pressure on himself, and you not worrying too much about harming him. Maybe you could develop a working system between you two that will help you keep disasters to a minimum, while also having a reliable plan for any accidents that may inevitably occur.

Bc it's implied that That Zayne has (past?) prophetic dreams about the MC, and that at one point, he *materializes into our timeline* or something like that, bc the MC can see him and recognize he's not Our Zayne. THE EXTENDED IMPLICATIONS ARE FUCKING NUTS. The Other Zayne can dream travel? We're living I'm one of the better timeline? Can OUR Zayne dream travel? (I've also on only been playing for like 2 weeks, so I'm not fully caught up on everything, but WHAT. This game is so much more in depth than the comedic sci-fi otome I was expecting)
