"She's cute," was all Desmond said as the door closed behind the woman, followed by the taxi departing. "I can see why you left us high and dry right before the late night rush."

The younger man had the decency to wince at least, but before Federico could utter an apology, Desmond waved it off. "S'okay, Patty and I  handled it. Besides, with you going home, we managed to get some decent tips for once."

"Ah, sorry to rain on your victory parade, but no," Federico slid into the chair opposite of him with his black coffee in hand. "Nothing happened last night. It appeared she was... more exhausted than she initially believed. So I took the couch instead."

Desmond must not have been subtle in his shock, for Federico broke out in a half-smile. "What? Are we surprised? I'll have you know I'm a gentleman first and foremost. Besides," he leaned back in his chair, smirking in triumph. "There is always next time."

He emphasized this by waving a card around with a number scrawled between his fingers.

"And a name? You sly dog."

"Envy is not a good look on you, fratello."

"What's that?" Desmond said, innocently taking a sip from his coffee. "To compensate for leaving, you're volunteering to receive on Thursday? You're far too kind, Federico."

"A rook overtaking a knight?" Federico casually observed, sitting down on the other half of the couch to give her space, balancing his beer on his slung over knee.

"Uh... yeah, actually." The woman blinked in surprise, her eyes following his before rubbing at her forearm.

"You sound surprised," [Blah]

"Because most don't get that." She soon snorted, rolling her eyes before the back of her head hit the back of the couch.  "Half the time they think the bird is a hideous eagle or something. I take offense at that since it was me who drew the 'eagle' to begin with."

"Then they're blind fools."He chortled, taking a longer drink. "But I must admit you've now sparked my curiosity. Are you a chess player or just a lover of clever wordplays?"

The woman made an exaggerated wince. "I hate to disappoint, but I'm not nearly as cool as you think I am. A shit chess player on a good day, and while I do appreciate a good wordplay, I cannot claim that one either. That designation goes to my great-great-great-grandfather. He ran a London gang way back in the 1860s called the Rooks. As kids, we'd pretend we were a part of it, pulling heists and stealing from the rich like demented little Robin Hoods."

She scratched the side of her head, her cheeks adopting a pink hue as she laughed again, this time in a more embarrassed manner. "When we parted our separate ways, we figured it would remind us of home. Of family and gah, I'm sorry that sounds rather sappy when I say it out loud."

"Perhaps, but family’s important." He tipped his bottle her way. "And that's a respectable attribute."
