Their breathing came in shallow wheezes, while the relentless fever consumed their body, as the chills, alternating with hot flashes, coursed through him.
With their eyes closed, they could feel even more the sheets uncomfortably clinging to their sweat-soaked body, but they didn’t dare to make a move as every muscle in their body ached.
Their consciousness ebbed and flowed like the tide, but they tried to concentrate on the surrounding sounds: the soft rustling of fabrics, the occasional clink of medical instruments, and the soft hum of a whispered voice.
“Hey… It’s me, Caretaker… You’re in a bad state, hm? Don’t worry, it’s gonna be alright now.”
It was Caretaker, thank god. They felt a subtle reassurance, a calmness spreading through them as unseen hands moved with practiced care, placing a cool cloth on their fevered brow offering brief relief from the oppressive warmth.
But there was one thing that didn’t sit right with them. As the Caretaker kept on talking, they resonated through the fog of their fevered mind. And then it clicked.
That wasn’t Caretaker’s voice.

I think these two recent hospital trips really helped with the "imposter syndrome" I was experiencing regarding my health. Like, part of me really wanted to brush it all off and wait for it to go away on its own like I've done before, but seeing how seriously and quickly both the ER and the Urgent Care took my conditions put a lot of things into perspective.
I'm very glad that we've been able to rule out a number of other concerns (heart and lung problems, kidney stones, etc) with these trips, and it'll make this round of testing much faster. I think I should have gone a lot sooner.
The day after urgent care, I was in the least amount of pain and the most well rested than I've been in in months. I got so many things done and still had energy at the end of the day. If I felt like that every day, or even just a couple days a week, I'd be unstoppable. I could do so much, I'd be on top of all my classes, I could work extra hours, I could do advocacy works, I could cook and keep our house clean. I want to do so much but being disabled is actively preventing me from doing that despite my best efforts.
This week has really proved to me that I'm not being dramatic or using it as an excuse, and if I could be doing more, I would be.

On my first day in Germany I got to my hotel and I couldn't get the lights to turn on. And I was like "Eh, fuck it, I'll just take a shower in the dark." And then the shower wouldn't get hot. I waited and waited and it stayed ice cold.
So I go down to the front desk and I'm like "My lights won't turn on and my shower won't get hot" so they send this guy up with me. We get into the room and I flick the switch and nothing happens so I'm like "See?"
And he goes "You must put your card in the slot."
"I... what? I have to put my room card in the light switch?"
"Of course!"
Now I have been in many hotels in the US and never encountered this concept, but apparently it was something most of their guests already knew. So I'm looking like a fool at this point. I feel like an idiot. The dude is fully grinning at me. I put the card in the slot and voila, the light turns on.
Then he's like "Ok, let's see if the shower works. You know you must wait for the hot water?" and I just know he's thinking I'm an idiot who also can't use a shower. This stupid American can't wait for the hot water! She can't even use a light switch or a shower!
And I guess he was distracted by these thoughts of my stupidity, because this dude fully stepped into the shower. In his nice dress shirt and slacks. He just. Gets into the shower.
And turns it on.
Have you ever seen a playing field get leveled instantaneously

if you're feeling powerless right now—and god knows I am—here's a reminder you can donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds, the Trans Law Center, Gaza Soup Kitchen, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, and hundreds of other charities that will work to mitigate the damage that has been and will continue to be inflicted
life continues. we still have the capacity to do good, important work. that matters

i think we've done a great job expanding the view of what a child's favorite animal can be. kids these days can say they love axolotls or pangolins or coelecanths and their decision is respected. maybe their parents can even find them a stuffed animal of it if they know where to look. and i think that's beautiful

one time I used the ben affleck smoking reaction image in the family group chat and my mom replied with the funniest possible response which was: "mommy doesn't know who the guy is???" and that phrase has not left my brain since. I'll see blorbos on my dash that I don't recognize and I'll be like well it seems mommy doesn't know who the guy is.

so i went back to the hospital today
got confirmation that it's muscle spasms and definitely not a heart problem
also pain has been the only thing keeping me awake and while the drugs they gave me were non-drowsy i don't think I've ever been this sleepy

I was rambling on the issue of museums and human remains and how certain populations are more likely to have their bodies put on display to be gawked at and then went "well I guess the Pompeii casts were of Europeans. there are bones in there right?" and Googled it to make sure, at which point I confirmed that yes there are bones in there, but more interestingly DNA testing revealed that a cast of an adult holding a child everyone assumed was a mother and child were, in fact, a man and a kid entirely unrelated to him. Honestly that's more moving to me. Maybe they were connected in a way other than blood, but maybe a stranger saw a child when the world was ending and thought the one thing he could do was hold them.

I love it when people use "shrimp" to mean "beyond the human range". like "shrimp colors" but applied to other things. "shrimp emotions" "shrimp sounds" "shrimp morality", as if shrimp are living some kind of transcendent existence that humans can never comprehend
