I saw a random article trashing the first episode of the Rick and Morty anime and decided to watch it on my seven seas website of choice and eh...I think it's cute. Not groundbreaking, but entertaining. I'll probably keep watching. It's fun to see them play a lot of the goofier elements of the show in such a straightforward manner. It's going to get angsty.
Granted, I'm coming into this as a basic b who kind of dropped the show around season 3 and only knows the basics of things like Space Beth - whilst also watching it with the mindset of it being vaguely similar but not to what Powerpuff Girls Z is to the original PPG - but it seems a fun time so far. The art style reminds me of those times where you would stumble across some random art from a Kaigai Anime oshi on pixiv who put their own spin on a 90s cartoon network show they like.
but uh how old is this blonde girl in the VR world that Morty seems to be being set up with? The story is that she is real and from another universe as that Morty's actual partner at one point, after all. She looks young too; sure; but just slightly too old for him at this moment imo

pairing: mechanic!joel x f!reader series outline: a slacker of a boyfriend, no job, and now your car needs serious maintenance. heading to the mechanic’s, you’re just expecting him to rid you of your car troubles and move on — you’re certainly not expecting him to change your life chapter summary: your dad finally takes you to have your car fixed, where you meet joel miller — dangerously handsome and charming beyond words word count: 3,7k warnings: 18+ only, reader is able-bodied and wears a dress, description of a rather useless boyfriend, strained father-daughter relationship, probably highly incorrect information about cars, smutty thoughts a/n: i watched one single fifteen minute video about changing brakes, so if anyone needs a bootleg mechanic you can hmu and i'll be there 🫡 endless hugs & head pats to @frannyzooey for not only all the help on this chapter, but all the kindness & encouragement overall 💜
Tumblr media
Your car’s had warning lights on for probably a dangerous amount of time. You’d told your dad numerous times what was going on, not that it mattered all that much to him because the car still gets you from A to B and maybe if you drove a bit more delicately then these things wouldn’t need maintenance so often.
If you turn the music up loud enough it just drowns all that out – both the warnings and your dad’s constant berating. Coming home one night, you try one last time to ask him for help.
“Some jackass cut right across me on the freeway, I made sure he knew exactly what I thought of him though. Lucky I didn’t fly out through the windshield when I slammed on my brakes, considering there's more warnings on my dash than on a fuckin’ storm-season weather report.”
That seemed to do the trick, God, if only you’d done this a month ago. Suddenly he was scouring his search and call history for some mechanic he’d been to for his own car – “Miller’s Auto Repair”, though he doesn’t know who the Miller in question is, saying he dealt with some young boy named Eddie with greasy hair and stains on his shirt to match.
He found some time in his oh-so-busy schedule to go with you. Was he about to lecture you on your attitude? Definitely, but at least your car’s going to be fixed.
-
You park in the street behind your dad and haul yourself out of your car, walking up to meet him. Taking in the place, it looks decent enough – tools scattered around, a young guy working on a car on a lift, plastic chairs and a steel leg table off to one side. Maybe decent is a slight exaggeration, but it’s spacious and airy and doesn’t reek of sweat and toxic masculinity. You’re certainly out of place, the sun blazing down on you in your simple daisy-print dress and you feel slightly overdressed.
An older man comes out of a partitioned-off room, the drywall not quite reaching the rafters and sheet metal above. He’s wearing well-fitted and surprisingly chic black coveralls — a hint of skin peeking from behind the lapel, cuffs buttoned up below his elbows, belt around his hips and there are even pleats in the pant legs. And you thought you were overdressed. You mindlessly smooth out your dress, suddenly feeling like you haven’t made enough of an effort.
It’s not that you were expecting someone unattractive, but the man waltzing towards you is criminally handsome — if only you could find a boy your own age who looked like this. A part of you is actually jealous your dad found this place before you did.
He reaches out to both you and your father with a firm handshake, “Name’s Joel. What can I do for ya?”
“My daughter here’s been having some car troubles.” He gestures to you and you notice Joel gives you a once-over and nods.
Taking the silence as your queue to speak, you start listing everything gone wrong with your car. “First it told me the brake pads need changing, and that was about, what, six weeks ago now?” You glare at your dad, your tongue in your cheek and arms tight across your chest.
“Told you I’ve been busy, you know this.” He matches your look and you turn your attention back to Joel, rolling your eyes and he smirks ever so slightly.
“Aircon needs regassing, and the headlights don’t seem to want to go bright anymore.”
“Well, lights and aircon are quick fixes, can do both right now for you, not expensive. I’ll take a look at the brakes and see if we have sets here that’ll work and let you know about that.”
Your dad excuses himself when his phone starts ringing, leaving you alone with Joel.
“So why’d you bring your dad with? You seem capable enough to me.” He crosses his arms, tilting his head.
“I’d rather not have some macho mechanic clock me from a mile away, and end up getting handled for knowing fuck all about cars. No offence.” Joel smiles at your brash commentary, leaning closer towards you. “Wouldn’t do that to a pretty girl like you. Cute dress, those your favourite?”
You’re not quite sure what he’s talking about, to be honest — a fog came over your mind after ‘pretty girl’ fell from his lips and you stand there in silence, mouth hanging open in a daze.
He leans to the side and points to your chest, snapping you back to reality. “The daisies on your dress? That your favourite flower?”
“Oh! No, uh…” Your voice fades off, unsure of what to do about the heat creeping up your neck and into your ears.
Joel just smirks at you. “You can bring in that car of yours onto the lift, sweetheart.”
You nod and start walking away, your dad ending his call and he’s already asking questions about the cost of all this work. Getting in your car again, you’re flustered. All this man has done is call you sweetheart and pretty once and it’s all you can think about. You pull your car up to the shop, lining up with the lift as best you can and roll down your window.
Joel leans into the open window with a slanted smile, voice low enough for just you to hear him, “Lined up perfectly there, just go slow and I’ll tell you when to stop,” and God if that doesn’t have your mind racing. You give him a weak smile and manoeuvre your car onto the lift, stopping when he raises his hand. Pulling the bonnet lever and climbing out, you move to stand with your dad again, stepping over discarded rags and dried oil stains.
Joel does what looks to you like a whole lot of fiddling and tapping and knocking of random car parts under the bonnet, and takes the light covers off to change the bulbs; he takes a wheel off and checks the brakes and you watch him the whole time. Skilled and calloused hands moving with ease, your mind wanders off to what else he’s good at with his hands. Crouching down to feel around a toolbox, his coveralls pull tight around his ass and thighs. That heat you felt a few minutes ago only getting worse just from watching him work, embarrassment washing over you – though not enough to look away.
Everything looks like it’s back in place and he lowers the lift, walking towards you and your dad. “Gas and bulbs are done, should be good as new now. Brakes you’re gonna have to come back for, though. Eddie just used the last of the pads and discs you need on that car there, but we can get 'em easily enough, should be here next week.” You nod at him, not sure if it’s easier to look him in the eye or avoid him altogether.
“And you can’t get them any sooner? Or, how long are these current ones gonna be safe for? I’m out of town again next week and–”
“It’s fine, next week is fine.” You put a hand out to cut your dad off and shake your head. You’re really not in the mood for his entitlement, and truthfully you’re looking forward to the chance to come here again without him.
“You gonna manage on your own?” he asks, his tone almost mocking and eyebrows raised.
“I’ll be fine, thanks,” you chirp back, voice curt and monotone.
“You sure?” Of course, he wasn’t going to believe you were capable.
“I’ll get Jake to come with me. It’s fine. Really.”
Right, Jake – your boyfriend. Someone you should’ve been thinking of a long time ago, when instead you were all but undressing Joel with your eyes, imagining the nice things he’d do for you, with you, to you.
You and Jake have been together just over a year now, slept together a handful of times, and all around he’s a decent guy. You met while you both were in training and were given the same placements for industry experience. He’s never done anything inherently bad to you, but lately, you’ve found yourself putting more and more distance between you — subconsciously initially, but now it feels more like a chore to spend time with him.
He’s been sweet and kind to you from the start, but it would be nice to have him make an effort every so often, brag about you, show you off. His grand plan for celebrating your anniversary was taking you out for lunch and calling it a day; if he visits while your dad’s around, the two of them spend more time talking than you do. It’s been about two months since he fucked you, if you could even call it that, and you’re tired of either faking an orgasm or reassuring him it’s fine you never came when you forget to put on the act at all.
You can’t picture someone like Joel giving you such mediocre treatment and being satisfied with that, living life so blissfully unaware.
Joel’s voice snaps you out of your fog and you notice your dad’s already walked out.
“See you then,” and he retreats with a tilt of his head and a wink.
Fuck it’s going to be a long week.
-
Joel already texted your dad three days ago to say you could come in, and you’ve been oddly nervous about it, your mind racing: what’s gonna be the quietest time to go, I wonder if Joel will be too busy with another job, I should make sure I’m not wearing the same dress again. You even made sure you washed your hair the night before in preparation, scolding yourself the whole time – he’s some random guy fixing your car, not to mention you do have a boyfriend.
Eddie’s nowhere to be seen, Joel’s wearing those same coveralls and there’s music playing from a worktop speaker.
“Afternoon, princess,” he holds your door open, eyes following you across the room, just the same as the week before. “Thought you were bringing a friend – what was his name?”
Fingers toying with the hem of your top, you only hope you made the right decision coming here alone. You’re not worried about something that Joel would say or do, no, but worried about something you yourself might. You never were good at hiding your feelings; you pray he can’t see through you.
“Oh, Jake?” You could keep it a secret and enjoy Joel’s attention a while longer but weighing up your options, maybe it’s better to just be honest with him. “He’s my boyfriend. He was uh, busy… today. So, just me.” He doesn’t need to know you never even asked Jake to accompany you to begin with.
“Is it cool if I stay while you work?” you ask timidly. “I can get a ride home though, if you’d prefer.”
“It’s no trouble, here.” He pulls a stool towards you, wiping it off with a smile. Joel gets to work on your car and it’s like a show, just for you. Definitely the right choice to come alone, you smile to yourself.
“So this boyfriend of yours, what’s he like?” he shouts out from the far side of your car and your smile drops.
“Oh, uh… he’s nice.” He is nice, but you can’t be bothered to think of anything worthwhile to say about him.
Joel rounds your car to stop and look at you. “Sounds to me like you don’t want ‘nice’.” His eyes trail up and down your figure and you gawk at his remark. Okay, maybe he actually can see right through you.
“Well, my dad really likes him. Says it’s good to have someone to ground you, or whatever.” Joel simply nods in response and turns his attention back to your car.
You take the opportunity to really take him in this time, with no dad around as a source of shame. Thick curls that you would love to run your hands through, sculpted nose, well-trimmed moustache, grey and patchy scruff for a beard, wide back and broad shoulders and firm chest and—
God, you need to think of something else before you get carried away. Again. You look around the room to refocus on something more appropriate, taking in all the arbitrary decor. Dog-eared posters of old rock bands, exposed bulbs dotted between fluorescent lights, a chain of mini chequered flags strung up along the wall.
You risk another look at Joel and see he’s taken two wheels off already, doing more twisting and turning of car parts you never even knew were there in the first place.
“What’s that?”
He looks to you over his shoulder, coveralls pulling tight again over his arms and back.
“What, this? Called a calliper. Holds the brake pads that squeeze against the disc, stopping the car.” You purse your lips, nodding slowly and Joel huffs out a laugh, facing away again. “Got any siblings that need car part lessons?” He continues, “Or better yet, maybe they can teach you instead.”
“Nope, just me. What about you? Any other Millers gracing the town?” You see him shake his head and he chuckles to himself.
“Got a brother, Tommy. He’s in construction. I worked with him a while back — much prefer this, though. What’s a girl like you do? Working your dream job?”
‘I’m uh, in between jobs, actually. I’m a chef — was a chef.” You look down to your lap, picking your nails. “I quit. Place was full of sexist dickheads. They suggested I put myself forward for promotion, then gave it to some egotistical asshole with both less experience and qualification. So I told them exactly where they could shove their promotion and never went back.”
You sigh and look up and see Joel’s already watching you, a faint smile on his face almost like he’s proud of you for standing your ground. His eyes are a mix of sympathy and understanding — not something you’re often on the receiving end of.
“I know I kinda fucked myself quitting like that, but I was tired of constantly being treated like shit. And not a fuck was I gonna stick around and take orders from a guy like that.” You crack a smile and Joel matches it.
“You keepin’ yourself busy?”
“Trying to figure out what’s next. Not sure if maybe I should do some more training somewhere, expand my skill set y’know, or just find another job. Not very easy with my dad breathing down my neck.” Joel nods, and his keen attention spurs you on. He’s one of few people who have actually listened to you about all this without giving you his own unwanted opinion or unsolicited advice.
“Only real silver lining is having time to pick up some old hobbies again. And talking to you, I guess.” Joel gives you a skew grin and you smile bashfully, lowering your gaze as you feel your cheeks redden.
“So what do you get up to when you’re not talkin’ to me, then?”
“Bits and pieces here and there. It’s been nice to get back into piano again.”
“Keen musician, are you? Play guitar myself, do a lot of the stuff that’s been playing here.”
The mental image of Joel playing guitar is not good for keeping your mind out of the gutter, and you're soon thinking about what one hand looks like plucking away at the strings, the other in a firm grip around the neck. One hand plucking away at you, the other in a firm grip around your neck. You stop yourself before that runs rampant in your mind, focusing on the song playing in the background.
“Wait, can you play In The Gallery?” You lean forward, eyebrows shooting up to your hairline, a grin spreading across your face in shock and amazement.
“You know this?” Joel points off in no direction, giving you the same bewildered look, and your expression changes from that of awe to insult.
“Of course I do, it’s Dire Straits. Look, I may know jack shit about cars but I do know other things. Do you sing, too?”
He shifts his weight to one leg, cocking his head to the side. “Do you?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know.” You flash a smile and he faces away again.
Joel’s bolted the front wheels back and is busy removing the rear ones when a phone starts ringing above the music.
“Hands a little full here. Can you answer? It’s just on the bench there.”
Your eyes widen slightly, but you stand and make your way to find it. Sliding to answer, you hold the phone to one ear and press a finger in the other to drown out the noise, slinking off towards Joel’s office.
-
Joel watches as you walk into his office, phone pressed into your ear. He’s been thinking about you since you arrived with your dad last week, and he’s glad to spend some time hearing what you have to say. And, you know, getting to really look at you without your dad around.
He thought you looked beautiful in that dress last week — thought what you’d look like out in public with him in that same dress, with his jacket over your shoulders as the air grows cold, you writhing underneath him behind closed doors and waking up in his shirt next to him the following morning. He scolded himself when you drove off last week for allowing himself that indulgence, that twisted fantasy about a girl as young as you — but seeing how you are today, maybe he was right all along.
You’ve been staring at him since you parked, and the way you bite your bottom lip and openly ogle at him when you think he doesn’t notice tells him you’re thinking about the same things, too.
You seemed shy, scared even, when you first stood in front of him, overshadowed by your father and his clear frustration with you. It seems you have no issue with pushing him, but he can see in the way you stand, closed off, and hear the unease in your constant defence that maybe this eats away at you more than you like to admit. He’s spent a mere two hours with you so far, and you shine when you’re free to say whatever you want, be whoever you want.
Your boyfriend Jake, however — he might be a challenge. Your smile faded when he was mentioned, saying your father’s fond of him, that he’s nice. Maybe you haven’t been together all that long, or on the contrary, been together too long, but if ‘nice’ is his most redeeming quality… He took your indifference and curt response as a sign to not push any further for now, but that boy, whoever he is, clearly doesn’t know how to keep a girl like you happy.
He’s considering fabricating some story of something else that needs repairs on your car just so you’d have a reason to come back, even if under false pretence. You probably would believe him given the evident gaps in your knowledge, but the risk of breaking your trust might not be worth it. He should keep his distance.
He focuses on the task at hand again and finds himself paying extra attention to his work. You won’t recognise good handiwork, but he knows you’ll be excited about having a fully functional car again. It’s not much, but seeing that winning smile spread across your face will be enough for him.
-
Much like Joel himself, it seems, his office is pleasantly well-kept, bar a few too many half-empty coffee mugs and stray papers littering the desk. A tatty plaid-print couch against the back wall, a mini fridge tucked next to the desk, a leather jacket hung over his chair. Blinds drawn and with no sign of Joel approaching, you trace your fingers across the collar, wondering what it would feel like hanging over your own shoulders, arms drowning in the too-long sleeves and you drowning in him.
You leave his office to walk back towards him and Joel raises his eyebrows questioningly, wiping his hands off on a rag. “So?”
“Woman named Hazel? She didn’t leave much of a message, she just asked if you could call her back. Said you’d have her number.” You hand the phone to him, his hands cool compared to the heat burning under your skin.
“Ah, guess I should,” he mumbles, a hand coming up to scratch the nape of his neck.
“Hm, so who’s Hazel? Is she pretty?” You wiggle your eyebrows at him, a cheeky grin on your face.
Joel scoffs a laugh. “Nobody you need to worry about, not my type.” You feel an odd sense of assurance at his admission. “Well, everything’s done, you’re good to go. Your dad paid last week already.”
“And what about all the hard work you put into this? Surely I owe you something for that?”
“You spendin’ the afternoon was payment enough.” He smiles at you, eyes softening. “I’ll see ya round, sweetheart. Come by any time, I mean it. And hey, if you ever need a change of scenery, you’re welcome to come answer the phone for me.”
You’re not entirely sure if he’s seriously offering you a job or just passing it off as banter. It would get you out of the house and put a bit of extra cash in your pockets; you’d get to spend days on end around Joel, watch him work, and maybe get a glimpse into who he is beyond the charming mechanic you know so far.
It would certainly test your resolve being so close to him. You consider all the afternoons that may look like the one you’ve just had — easy work, no Eddie or other customers around, just you and Joel and the tension between you. You suppose you’d have to find something to do to pass the time on days like these… Then again, do you really want to risk having him see you as just the girl who answers the phone?
Maybe you can fake something, an excuse to bring you back here to see him again. The ruse wouldn’t last long, not when Joel takes one look at the car and sees clear as day there’s nothing wrong, but you can pin it all on inexperience. Either way, you won’t be forgetting him any time soon.

this is a lot of posts for me in 24 hours, but there are a couple things i saw/experienced at the show in relation to audience & stage door behavior that i think is important to know to discourage that behavior. this is gonna be super long, so bear with me <3
tldr: be quiet during shows & be respectful to those around u at stage door
first the audience behavior. i was sat behind two people who i have had the unfortunate luck of sitting behind at an earlier show a few weeks ago. so this doesnt go for all audience members, but i have heard other situations like this as well. the ENTIRE show, they were lip syncing to the songs and dancing (which ok worse things have happened, but it was incredibly distracting for the people around me, who kept complaining about their behavior). they also were literally quoting the scenes out loud. like, would say the character's lines before the actor even said it themselves. it was actually insane? like fully ruining scenes and moments in the show, because they clearly wanted people around them to know they had seen the show before. behavior like that is just rude and incosiderate. if u wanna sing along and act out the dialogue, maybe stay home and watch a bootleg? people paid a LOT of money to see the actors perform, not random audience members. it was really frustrating to a lot of people sitting around me, and to me as well. so just dont do that maybe?
for stage door behavior, im gonna name one person (bc multiple ppl have had issues with them), but leave the other two unnamed because i dont think anyone needs to receive unnecessary hate. there were a few people at stage door who werent at the show, and i understand that that happens all the time and u cant really do anything about it! but it was people who often brag and post about going only to the stage door without seeing the show and take up a few spots at the front. like....this is not the first time they've done this, and also they were maybe involved in a certain dming and food situation from a while ago if u guys remember that....so. no hate to them, free will and all, you can do what you want. but like, the repeat offending of constantly stage dooring without seeing the show is wild to me.
for the named person, broadwaypolaroids needs to chill tf out. i know multiple ppl who have had issues with her, and i never really cared to think about her until the last few times i have stage doored (all of which she has been at) where she is just so disrespectful not only to the actors, but the other fans who were at the show waiting to talk to the actors. she was fully interrupting fans conversations with certain actors to make the actors take at lesat 3 or 4 photos on her dumbass camera. she also was fully blocking the way for actors to leave and forcing them into stopping to take pictures. also insane that she charges money for these pictures and i think more people need to be talking about it, but maybe thats just me. i also one night saw her be rude to security because trevor (who was on as pony that show) didnt sign playbills in the section she was standing in. mind u trevor was outside for lile 15 minutes really taking his time with the fans. she went up to security and basically demanded they get trevor to come back outside. it was literally one of the more insane things i have ever witnessed. anyways, that turned into a rant. but the behavior from her last night was seriously not cool and shes just a rude person from what i have seen.
anways! lets remember to be considerate and respectful of those around us, both at the show and afterwards. everyone is there for the reason of enjoying the show and maybe getting to compliment the actors' performances after. so just be quiet during shows and be kind to those around u, in seats and at stage door. its truly not that hard. ok bye! <3

you're going to die in your best friend's arms.
and you play along because it's funny, because it's written down,
you've memorized it,
it's all you know.

Tumblr media
“can you make sure to spike chuuya’s wine with a laxative before he gives a speech at my funeral?” your words cause a twitch of dazai’s lips - ever so slightly. even now as you bleed out on a rooftop, you’re scheming with him about the best way to piss off your third - (friend? enemy? collaborator? you never bothered with specifics.)
you’re closer than strangers, because you know chuuya will grab a vintage and smash the neck against the counter, not bothering with decorum while he drinks over the death of someone dear to him ; you know that dazai will torture chuuya in the meantime so he doesn’t have to face the reality that you won’t come back. you’re also aware that while dazai is your best friend, you are not his, and that might be the one regret you die with.
“you lie all the time, samu,” you say with a pained cough, ignoring the blood trickling out of your mouth. it’s not that different to the one night you and dazai got blackout drunk at your apartment while watching shitty bootleg animated movies and woke up with drool sliding down your cheeks.
“... so can you lie to me and say i’m the most important person in your life? dying wishes and all.” dazai hates the smile on your face because he’s imagined this scenario no less than 30 times with all different methods, except you were holding him and sobbing while he was finally able to rest. it’s wrong in every way possible - to the point where he debates joining you.
but that would be selfish, because this is your moment ; and while he’s never been one to deny himself of his own desires, this is one he doesn’t think he can stomach.
he repeats it back to you, knowing you don’t believe him, but you let out the most pathetic cheer anyway because you somehow feel like a winner even now. your head is facing the sky and you speak to him once more, a smile in your tone.
“it’s really pretty, but ‘m gonna go to iceland and see the aurora borealis - now that is a sky worth dying for. and then after, maybe i’ll go climb mount everest. and by climb, i mean i’ll have chuuya fly me up.” with strained motion and a wince neither of you mention, you slowly turn your head to look at the boy holding you close, letting the flowing crimson from your body stain his existence, and say, “you’ll be there with me, right? we still have a lot to do.” he nods and responds, “of course i will,” with a hoarse whisper.
satisfied, you squeeze his hand with the last bit of strength in your body before finally resting. that stupid smile is still on your face, and dazai knows that the sight will haunt him for the rest of his life - the one you should be by his side for.

i love how you write roan 🥹🥹🥹 what if she sees reader upset about something (sad song or movie? not something super serious) and she cries because you’re sad and she doesn’t want you to be
ty for ur request ♡ fem!reader
Eddie lavishes like a king in the corner of the new couch. This is the life, he thinks, the sentiment strengthened by your foot warming under his thigh and Roan's entire body stretched out in his lap.
He tucks her hair out of her face and presses a soft kiss behind her ear. He loves movie nights. A bowl of jiffy pop popcorn with extra butter and milk duds cools to his left, your body screwed up in a shape to his right. You're so endearing he's stopped being surprised by it, and Roan's his eternal love —he has the perfect girls for company every single day.
"Eddie?" you whisper.
He and Roan both look at you. "Yeah?"
"Does the–" You cover your mouth so Roan can't see. "Does the mommy seahorse die?"
"You've never seen this movie before?" Roan asks.
You drop your hand. "Well, I thought I did, but I guess I fell asleep last time?" You speak with your face turned toward them but your eyes on the TV screen, horror dawning in the pinch of your brows. "No way. No way!"
What follows is a few long minutes of absolute silence as the movie progresses. The mommy seahorse, who's been sick the whole movie, says goodbye in a burst of colour. Eddie isn't sure if he loves watching something this sad with Roan this small, but he supposes she'll feel much worse than this as life goes on. Still, he hugs her nice and tight in case she needs it. She's been known to cry at movies: she cries every time the Part of Your World song plays in The Little Mermaid.
Eddie's cried a couple of times with her.
He's a little surprised when she tears up, though. Looking down at her with pursed lips, Eddie rubs the length of her arm, silky pyjamas cold under his palm. "It's okay," he whispers, pulling her to his chest. "Don't be sad, Ro, it's just a movie."
Roan shakes her head, her shoulders shaking as she crawls out of his lap and into yours. You let your knee drop to accept her. Eddie's slightly offended until the TV screen goes white and the tears running down your cheeks shine in clarity.
"Baby," he says with a snort.
You laugh yourself as Roan sniffles in your lap. "Hey, what's the matter?" you ask her.
"You're crying," Roan says.
"You're crying." You sniffle and wipe her cheeks with your thumbs. "We're silly, huh?"
Roan isn't perturbed by the movie, it's your crying that's affecting her. She does as you'd done, wiping your cheeks dry with her hands before enclosing your shoulders in short arms. "Don't cry, mom. It gets better at the end of the movie. They find the starstone."
You sniff and laugh, your foot shifting from under Eddie as you fold yourself around Roan, almost protectively. "Are you crying 'cos I'm crying? Princess, they're just movie tears. I'm a softie."
"She's a huge softie," Eddie says, lost for what to do besides sit there and watch.
"Are you okay?" Roan asks.
"Baby, I'm fine. It's only a sad movie. I'm okay, I promise." You smile widely. "See?"
Eddie decides nobody is in any real emotional distress, grabbing the popcorn bowl. "You know," —his words stagger as he gets distracted digging for milk duds— "we should start watching other stuff if you guys are gonna fall apart. You're gonna have headaches and I'm gonna have to take care of you both. We could watch one of my tapes–"
"No, dad," Roan says firmly. "No way."
"Which tape? I love you, Eddie, I really love you, but I can't watch your bootleg of Live in Irvine again this week. I'm all Metallica'd out."
"Hey." He holds his hands up. "Whatever."
You and Roan share a guilty laugh. "Maybe I could watch it one more time," Roan says.
"You just feel bad for hurting my feelings."
Roan shakes her head, dark hair bouncing around her cheeks. "That's not true, daddy."
He puts the bowl of popcorn on Roan's play table and leans back, arms over the backs of the sofa with forearms hanging down, cool. He raises his eyebrows at his pouting daughter.
"I– I actually like Metallica," Roan says, an arm behind your neck, her cheek brushing your cheek.
You make a pleased humming sound and nuzzle your cheeks together. "Me too."
Liars. "So we can watch it tonight?" he asks.
You whisper something in Roan's ear.
"Um, no. Y/N's too sad from the movie. I think you need to make her feel better, with, uh…" You whisper again. Roan's eyes widen with understanding. "With The Little Mermaid!"
"Oh, awesome, so we're gonna cry all night?" Eddie asks.
He gets up to put it in the TV. You drag yourself to his side in the corner of the couch and the three of you smush together into a bundle of warmth under a big throw blanket. When Roan cries during Part of Your World, you shush her and dry her cheeks affectionately. Eddie can't help laughing. He loves you both, but you're such gigantic softies it's unreal.
"Would you still fall in love with me if I could speak?" you whisper. On screen, Prince Eric tells Ariel she can't be the one after all, her voice taken by the evil sea witch.
Eddie can't see your face, his head resting on yours. Each word you speak vibrates up. "Of course I would."
"My pick up lines were half the selling point," you argue.
You're a flirt sometimes, he'll give you that. "I'd love you even if you had a fish tail instead of legs. Eric doesn't know how good he's got it. I'd miss your voice." He draws a short line down your arm with his marriage fingertip. "But you'd still be my Y/N."
"That's Disney cheesy," you say with a scoff.
But. You weasel your arm around Roan's front to hug him, too. Gentle, you press a kiss to the slope leading down from his neck. His flirting was cheesy for sure, and it worked like a charm.

This Week in BL - It's 2024 & I'm talking about TayNew... really?
(They pretty much told us all to sit down and shut tf up, 'cause they got this. AND THEY DO.)
Organized, in each category, with ones I'm enjoying most at the top.
Feb 2024 Wk 3
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube grey) ep 9 of 12 - I broke. In my defense, it was Monday, I needed comfort, and TayNew were right tf there. Ya know what? They are great in this show. It's a great adaptation. I might like it more than the JBL live action. You know why? Really, honestly WHY...?
That was a PHENOMENAL KISS. Those boys did Thailand fucking proud. They did fandom a solid. Thank you OGs for reminding us how it's done. I was getting used to SloppyHot. And SloppyHot has its place, but that TayNew rooftop kiss was a top tear class act. It was tender and sweet and respectful and joyful. It was eye work and breath work and years of practice. How very far BL has come while still staying so much the same. TayNew - I salute you!
(Read all about distribution issues here.)
The Sign (Sat YT) ep 12fin - we waiting, I guess? Bah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 11 of 12 - The recipe book thing was so damn cute and I love a claiming. YOU KNOW I LOVE A CLAIMING!
In fact, I love OffGun.
I love food based BL.
I adored seeing a reboot of "the infamous dragging".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I don’t love anything else about this show. Sigh.
1000 Years Old ep 1 of 12 - Finally we get our gay vampire BL from Feel Good Bangkok. Stars Shane (My Engineer) and fresh face Opal, directed by Champ (2gether). It’s kind of odd but enjoyable. A group of teen UFO seekers find a vampire instead. Opal looks a bit like a mix between Newnu + Leo (VIXX) - so cute + edge. Also, nice to see Shane again on our screens after so long.
Finally, I like the subtle (and sometimes not subtle) presence of ghosts permeating this show. Do the friends know she's there? Do they know she's dead? Is the existence of paranormal accepted but not that of aliens? Or are the two combined? Is this lazy writing or just fun world building? Who cares! It's enjoyable.
For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 12fin - the nail painting bit was very cutie queers and I've not seen it done in BL before, so that was nice. For some reason captions never dropped for me on this last episode, but it didn’t really matter. Not much happened and I understood everything anyway.
Tumblr media
Quick pitch?
From the people who brought us Unforgotten Night based on a y-novel, about a young man nursing a heartbreak who has a one-night stand, but the other boy didn't want it to end. This turned out to be a pulp that wasn’t half as good as it should have been and even less memorable, but not terrible. 5/10 DON'T BOTHER unless you're v bored
City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 3 of 12 - Oh it is such a pulp: the acting is not good and the script is terrible. Of course, I’m mildly enjoying it. Very good dream kissing. There's something appealing about these main characters - I think it's the moot crushes. We rarely get to see that. These days everything feels very one sided, this... isn't.
Tumblr media
A Secretly Love (Thai WeTV) - Khonprot, a third-year hazer of the engineering faculty, has a secret crush on Pluem, a tsundere fourth-year head hazer. Over the years, he's seen Pluem cycle through girlfriends. Recently, after a public breakup, however, Khonprot thinks maybe a boy has a chance.
I tried but I can't get into my WeTV account anymore and I'm way too lazy to figure it out. I'll catch it grey if I can, since I've rebooted the bootlegging side of my BL life for Cherry Magic anyway.
So this show may stay in this section, or I may bump it down to "it's airing but..."
If anyone is watching it, let me know if it's good?
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Love For Love's Sake (Korea Weds iQIYI) 7-8fin - Ugh it was GREAT, despite some pretty telling flaws. I ended up feeling like some of the filming was amateurish (very overworked low angles - director's first feature, I assume), and the narrative is a little disjoined and on the nose, AND the subs are clumsy (which I don't expect from KBL) BUT I still loved it. (FYI - I wouldn't be so harsh on a BL for this kinda thing except one from Korea.)
Quick pitch:
This isekai-based KBL is about a man who must win a game by convincing a reserved teen outcast to fall in love with him. Of course, that teen represents himself and his own unhappiness. Like many queer narratives, this show is actually about self worth, trust, and found family, and it is VERY on the nose. But I don’t expect subtlety from my BL and I enjoyed it's truly lovely redemption arc and earnest performances. While I found the narrative a touch disjointed with overworked filming angles and poorer than average captions, this is certainly much better than early KBL in terms of consistency of tone, script, and immersion. Highly rewatchable and charming, which counts for a lot. 9/10
Trigger warning for suicide depicted.
Tumblr media
Perfect Propose (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 4 of 6 - Gosh, it’s so lovely. But I do just constantly want to give them both hugs.
AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) ep 4 of 10 - Oh look, Taiwan has created yet another BL where I spend most of the time watching it grinning like an idiot. Surprise surprise. The pet name thing was fucking adorable. Also Taiwan once more proving they come by their "kings of kissing" title honestly. I mean to say. In a week of good kisses this one was just... WOW.
On the other hand, some of the underpinning themes are starting to v worry me (ownership, consent, age), and we only just got started, and I don't trust this production company so... I have concerns.
But also... YAY KISSES!
(I'm made of weak moral fiber.)
Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 6 of 10 - Like many other shows on this list. I just enjoy it the most when the two leads are on screen together. So this episode was kind of lacking because they were apart for most of it. I also am starting to agree with the tone of the plot, that maybe they ARE better off as friends not lovers. (And I'm sure I'm not supposed to want that.) Oh Japan, must you?
My Strawberry Film (Japan Gaga) ep 1 of 8 - Oh it’s good. In the arthouse lane so don’t expect sweetness & light or an HEA. If there’s no cartoon aspect to a JBL, there’s usually no joy. But it is certainly good. Teens uncover some old film and a mystery around a pretty girl. The background music is wildly annoying (and rarely in the background).
Tumblr media
It's Done
What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - will binge when I have any spare time. 2024 is crazy busy for me so far.
The Servant and the Young Master - from Vietnam, it's on YouTube. I will give it a try when I have a window of time.
Began Beginning (Myanmar YouTube) - A Burmese BL? @heretherebedork vouched for it, so I will give it a watch.
7 Days Before Valentine (Weds WeTV) - Gave me Luminous Solution vibes have decided not to watch.
Tumblr media
It's Airing But...
Dead Friend Forever (Thai iQIYI) - rumors are it's interesting. I'm waiting to know how it ends.
Ossans Love Season 2 (Japan Gaga) - 5 years later, will anything have changed? This is Japan so… probubly not. I won't be watching this. I disliked Season one and actively hated the follow ups. No thank you.
Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, it’s me… I hate you. You’re about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure you’re someone’s kink, you're my weakest link. Goodbye. I DNFed this at ep 5. Frankly I'm impressed with myself for getting that far.
Time the series (Tue Gaga/YT) 10 eps - dropped it at ep 4.
Next Week Looks Like This:
Tumblr media
2/24 Unknown (Taiwan Youku) 12 eps - Older brother tough guy breadwinner looks after his sister and defacto adopted little brother. Little bother falls in love with him and is sent away after a stolen kiss. But when he comes back…
Sam Lin has a cameo so even if I wasn't already excited, I'm in. We should be on our guard though, Taiwan will occasionally go edgy, dark, and sad... this could go there.
One assumes GMMTV is filling in the BL time slot with something queer on their YT Channel after Cooking Crush ends, they gonna lose subs if they don't. But I've not been paying attention to the chatter so I don't know which of their line-up it will be. I think G4 are filming/off radar now, and Earth is in that het noona thing? Plus they gotta sort out the IP for MIx-Up and Ossen. So it won't be one of the announced adaptations. They'll hold My Golden Blood for the high season, so I think it'll be one of the lesser known lead-outs. Wandee or Only Boo maybe? But they only just started filming those. Are we getting our long awaited GL? Anything else left from 2023 that I forgot about?
Upcoming BLs for 2024 are listed here. This list is not kept updated, so please leave a comment if you know something new or RP with additions.
THIS WEEK’S BEST MOMENTS
Two crawling kisses from Thailand this week. Now this is a fetish I didn't know I had. Turns out, we love this one! (*waves hand in air* I speak for all of us now.)
Tumblr media
Cooking Crush
Tumblr media
City of Stars
Tumblr media
Possibly the best tsundere to cinnamon roll pivot we've had in a long time.
Tumblr media
Also the best asshole to KING pivot. Could we have a whole drama staring this character now? Please?
Tumblr media
And finally our sunshine learning to love himself.
SIGH. what a lovely show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a good SMILEY kiss from a KBL.
Tumblr media
And then some cute cuddles? Korea is spoiling me these days. I'm catching expectations now. What's next? Japan learns to kiss in their light BLs? Ha! I kill me.
(All Love for Love's Sake).

TRUTH OR DARE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PAIRING: ghostface!gwen stacy x fem!reader
SYNOPSIS: paranoia and the creeping feeling that someone is watching you have been happening ever since the start of the school year once you got together with your boyfriend, randy robertson. but when he gets murdered and queens starts an uproar over this secret ghost killer, you get a call at night from a stranger in the middle of the night, and they wanna play a game. truth or dare?
NOTES: scream au! violent descriptions (nothing too much just with the use of ghostface it’s expected), reader experiencing comphet, major jealousy and heavy flirting, stalking, obsessive!gwen, nothing too much. nickname “good girl” mentioned once but in a taunting way not no bdsm type way we don’t do that here. HEAVY MAKEOUT. enjoy??
Tumblr media
the black cloak and white mask seemed to be everywhere, a constant presence that infiltrated every corner of your world.
it dominated the media— from news broadcasts to social media feeds, newspapers, and even the e!news tabloids. the images from those fateful nights were plastered in front of your eyes repeatedly, each time reopening the wounds and forcing you to relive the heart-wrenching moments.
it all began at a costume party hosted by the notorious playboy, harry osborn, in anticipation of halloween. autumn held a special place in your heart, particularly as it transitioned into the eerie and enchanting season of october. tim burton's movies, with their dark whimsy, were a particular favorite of yours. that's why you convinced your boyfriend, randy, to dress as victor and emily from the corpse bride.
randy was a tall, somewhat dorky guy hailing from a loving african american household. while he had a reputation as an athletic football player, his true passion lay in writing, more specifically the realm of journalism. he seemed like the perfect match for you, and yet, there was an indescribable hesitation lingering in your heart. it wasn't that he wasn't right for you or vice versa, but really a blend of uncertainty and fear. perhaps it stemmed from him being the first guy to actively pursue and ask you out, leaving you unsure of what lay ahead. or maybe you were just grappling with the question of whether he actually fit your ideal type. it was a feeling you couldn’t explain in words.
the corpse bride held a special place in your heart, beyond the fall season. however, it did turn you off how much convincing it took to get randy on board with the idea of matching halloween outfits. after all, it was just a couple's costume. so what was his problem?
the night began on a high note as you arrived at the party with randy. the vibrant lights bathed the room in ever-changing colors. people danced and swayed to the infectious rhythm of the music, while others indulged in halloween-themed snacks and drinks in the corners.
you spotted your friends and decided to join them, breaking away from randy to spend time with his own friends. or so you thought. randy never struck you as the cheating type. with his gentle giant demeanor, he seemed like the perfect match for you— kind, considerate, and driven, basically all the qualities a girl should want in a guy.
but then, everything came crashing down when you caught sight of him in a corner, locked in a passionate kiss with sally avril. at that moment, time seemed to slow to a crawl before abruptly hurtling forward.
“what the hell? this whole time you were acting like you wanted to be with me but instead you’re messing around with the bootleg avril lavigne?” you shouted, the words erupting from your lips.
your eyes locked with hers as she stared at you in disbelief. the look you had only intensified as you saw her weakly hide behind him. you didn’t care if you were disrespectful, that was the last thing on your mind at the moment.
randy's gaze was fixed on you, fear and guilt circling within his eyes as you turned to him. “you are the most trifling man i have ever met. if you felt this way, why not end it? but no, you wanna act like a little bitch and make me come dressed with you just to embarrass me. never let me see your face again,” you declared.
angry that a friend of yours who knew he was taken decided to kiss him anyway. angry that your ex boyfriend couldn’t just do the bare minimum out of respect and tell you the truth, instead being sneaky behind your back. angry that you felt embarrassed and like an idiot for even believing something like this would work out.
as tears welled up in your eyes, you turned away, walking off in a haze of hatred. your friends tried to console you, practically begging for you to stay, but you needed to be alone to process the overwhelming pain. seeking solace, you found yourself outside, rain pouring down, mirroring just how you felt. the raindrops traced a path from your head down to the curve of your nose, mingling with the wet fabric of your dress. in that moment, all you desired was to be alone in the dark with your thoughts, away from the prying eyes of friends, and just calm down.
ironic how you were dressed as emily, considering you felt like the other woman.
it was when you were lost in your thoughts that you heard a a piercing scream reverberating through the house, jolting you from your previous assumptions that it was all part of a macabre party activity. your body tensed, and you swiftly turned towards the entrance, witnessing a wave of terrified people streaming out in panic.
driven by curiosity and a growing sense of unease, you stepped forward, determined to unravel the mystery unfolding before you. as you made your way inside, the scene that greeted you was far from anything you could have anticipated.
the grand staircase, once an elegant display of cream-colored opulence, now bore a twisted transformation. its steps were drenched in a vivid, saturated red, creating an otherworldly and macabre sight that churned your stomach. blood cascaded down in a haphazard and unsettling manner, leading your gaze to the source of the horror.
there, at the bottom of the staircase, lay randy, with a broken neck.
his friend, chad, had turned him over, revealing a sight that sent shivers down your spine. it was evident that randy had suffered a fatal blow to his chest, inflicted by a shard of glass or some other jagged object.
initially, you thought it was just a tragic accident, but deep down, you knew better. you had witnessed the fear and confusion etched in randy's eyes while his body laid limp on the floor. it was clear to you that someone or something had ruthlessly taken his life.
the night wore on as the police conducted their investigation, and you found yourself subjected to interviews, polygraphs, and everything else demanded of you to piece together the events that unfolded.
you still don’t know what happened that night. the weight of remorse for randy's tragic fate bears heavily upon your heart, not in the personal sense of romantic love, but in the recognition that no one deserves to meet such a brutal end. the haunting image of his final moments, consumed by fear and confusion, you couldn’t help but feel guilty.
it engulfs you in sleeplessness, much like tonight. the continuous string of events and criminal activities associated with this enigmatic apparition has caused an overwhelming amount of stress, making it impossible for you to find solace and rest during the night.
frustrated, you let out a sigh and forcefully throw off your covers, reaching for your phone on the nightstand. with a gentle unplug from the charger, you notice that it has sufficient battery to allow you to use it comfortably while lying down.
unlocking your phone with your password, you open tiktok, perhaps the least advisable app to open if you intended to sleep. however, acknowledging the chances of you falling asleep anytime soon, you decide to indulge in it anyway.
as you glance at the corner of your phone, you notice the time reads 11:30. you make a promise to yourself to scroll for just a few minutes before attempting to sleep again.
and so, time passes by, more than just a couple of minutes. suddenly, a ringing sound interrupts your tiktok video, and a notification pops up at the top of your screen, automatically muting the video. the incoming call displays as "no caller id," causing you to dismiss it, unwilling to immediately hang up in case it's a scammer testing the validity of your phone number.
returning to your scrolling, the number calls again. it becomes clear that it's an actual person trying to reach you. annoyed, you press the red button, rejecting the call. almost immediately, your phone starts ringing again, persistently calling you.
clicking your tongue in irritation, you sit up in bed and examine the unknown caller id.
why do they keep calling?
"fuck it," you groan, deciding to answer the call. "hello?"
a profound silence ensues, only accompanied by the faint background noise resembling a gentle breeze.
"hello, (y/n)," the voice on the other end utters.
it lacks a natural quality, instead exuding a cold and detached demeanor, yet with a tinge of arrogance.
"how do you know my name? who the hell is this?" you demand, seeking answers.
the fact that this person knows your name, especially at this late hour, immediately sends chills down your spine.
a deep, dark chuckle emanates from the voice before it speaks again. "wanna play a little game?" the voice asks.
you sigh in irritation. "i asked you a question, who are you?"
silence lingers on the other end of the line before the voice breaks it once more. "don't you want to play? it’ll be fun, i promise," the voice adds, its tone dripping with a smirk.
despite your initial inclination to hang up and leave this peculiar individual to their own devices, there was something about them that piqued your curiosity. the voice carried a feminine quality, although it was difficult to discern due to its thick, apathetic tone. beneath the eerie and disconnected facade, there seemed to be a hint of something more in the way they conversed with you. it was as if they genuinely wanted to engage in conversation.
you scoffed, rising from your bed and catching a glimpse of the night sky. "fine, i'll play. what game?"
you could hear the voice on the other end eagerly patting their thigh in excitement. "good girl, i like them feisty. how about a nice game of truth or dare?" the voice suggested, its eagerness palpable.
feeling a hint of nervousness at being referred to as "good girl," you cautiously responded, "truth or dare? okay. what are the rules?" the sinister yet mysterious aura still sent shivers down your spine.
the voice cleared their throat, adopting a more official tone as they explained the rules of the game. "well, you see, the rules are simple. each player chooses either truth or dare. the chosen option determines what the other player does. truth means you'll be asked a question, while dare means you must perform a task." after a brief pause, the voice continued, "the first player is you. which are you going to choose, truth or dare?"
slowly pacing around the room, you pondered your response but ultimately decided to play it safe. "um, truth," you mumbled into the phone.
"okay then, beautiful. what's your favorite color?" the voice inquired.
you couldn't help but burst into laughter at the simplicity of the question.
"what, did i say something funny?" they whispered through the microphone, clearly perplexed.
"no, no. it's just... for a creepy stranger calling me at night, that was the most ordinary question you could have asked," you explained, a few giggles escaping your lips as you spoke.
although you couldn't see it, you could almost imagine the person on the other end of the line smirking. "what do you expect when you receive a creepy call at midnight from a creepy stranger who knows your name and starts a creepy game of truth or dare with you?" they retorted, their sense of humor evident.
you laughed at their wit and couldn't help but feel a sense of strangeness in going along with all of this.
"what do you want?" you asked once more, silently hoping for a genuine answer.
"what i always desire," they stated nonchalantly, causing a shudder to run down your spine as their voice suddenly adopted a tender tone. "you, of course."
"w-what?" you mouthed, barely managing to whisper the words.
you found yourself utterly bewildered by their statement, but before you could dwell on it, the voice swiftly redirected your attention.
"i think i asked you a question. what's your favorite color?"
"it's (f/c). i practically wear it all the time, or at least whenever i have an excuse to. i even buy things in that color," you rambled, attempting to clarify. "but it's not like an obsession or anything."
"i know all about obsession," the voice responded darkly, taking an unsettling turn for a moment. "i bet it looks stunning on you. not that i would know, right?"
a blush crept up your cheeks at the compliments and endearing terms. it had been a while since you had received such attention. yet, even in those instances, it didn't evoke the same spark as it did now. the nervousness it stirred within you felt oddly exhilarating, unlike anything you had experienced from your boyfriend or the other guys at school.
"okay, i guess it's my turn now. so, truth or dare?" you ask the mysterious figure.
they let out a slight chuckle. "truth or dare, huh? i think i'll go with the truth."
a smile tugs at the corners of your lips as you sense their attempt to put you at ease.
"what's your favorite hobby? or, you know, your favorite thing to do, if you have one," you inquire.
there's a moment of silence on the other end as you patiently await their response. "drumming. i'm a drummer in a band, you know? i've heard girls like the title of being a rockstar's girlfriend," they reply.
you giggle at their comment. "the drummer's girlfriend, huh? isn't it a bit egotistical to call yourself a rockstar?"
"maybe it is, so what?" they retort, followed by a low, raspy chuckle.
another laugh escapes your lips. "that's actually really cool. i've heard that drumming takes a lot of skill and practice. and if you're in a band, then i'm sure you're pretty talented."
"you're... you're really interested in this kind of stuff?" they ask, their tone transitioning from confidence to astonishment. "nice to know a girl like you has good taste. i'm sure you'd love to feel the calluses on my fingertips," they tease.
you can't help but nervously giggle at the stranger's words, a swarm of butterflies fluttering in your stomach.
"now it's your turn," you remind them.
"well, truth or dare?" the voice asks.
"dare," you reply almost immediately.
you hear them let out a laugh from the other end, presumably in response to your eagerness. "bold, i like it," they comment. "i dare you to spin around in a circle until i say stop."
you tilt your head to the side, slightly perplexed by the dare. "are you serious?"
once again, their laughter fills the line. "come on and give me a show, ballerina."
letting out a sigh, you begin to spin around, unraveling into a fit of giggles. you can't deny that you wonder why they chose this particular dare, out of all the possibilities. but it serves as a distraction, and part of you is content with that.
"and stop," they command, and your feet come to a halt, your head lightly pounding from the spinning.
catching your breath, you resume speaking. "happy?" you ask, lacing your words with sarcasm.
"ecstatic," the ominous voice replies. "thanks for the view. as a former dancer, i'd give you a ten out of ten."
maybe it's the impending headache, but you could have sworn they thanked you for the view. which also means they could see you. but that's not possible, right?
"your turn, hurry up and pop the question," the voice commented, its impatience evident.
running out of questions and feeling a mix of confusion and curiosity, you blurted out, "do... do you like girls?"
silence greeted your question, and you mentally facepalmed at your awkwardness.
"oh," they whispered, seemingly taken aback. "i think you forgot to include the truth or dare part, babe."
your voice caught in your throat, leaving you speechless. you felt like a deer caught in headlights, frozen in fear.
"but i can't help it when i see a pretty girl like you so desperate for a response. i don't just like girls," the voice replied, a small snicker following. "i love them."
heat tingled behind your ears, spreading to your cheeks once more.
"how did you, um, know?" you asked, your curiosity piqued.
"i haven't even told you i'm a girl yet, and you're already assuming. i'll take that as a compliment," they mumbled, their tone bordering on mockery. "i just know who i like."
silence fell once again, and you found yourself lost in your thoughts. this inexplicable feeling that washed over you was something you couldn't quite put into words.
"i'll let my curiosity guide me here, but when was the last time you had... intimate relations with someone?" the voice asked, waiting for your answer.
a dry laugh escaped your lips, shattering the silence of your room. "what, my ex-boyfriend? what are you trying to get at?"
"ever thought about having a girlfriend?" the voice asked, its tone now more aggressive and snide, seemingly triggered by the mention of your ex.
the mention of a girlfriend made your mouth go dry. there had always been a certain connection missing from your previous relationships, but you could never quite pinpoint what it was or whether it was something about you or them. the question caught you off guard, but before you could delve into it, the voice steered the conversation back to the game.
"truth or dare?" the ghostly voice asked.
"truth," you replied, this time with hesitance compared to the last.
"okay, truth is... what's your deepest, darkest fantasy? what's something you've always wanted to do?" the voice asks.
"deepest, darkest fantasy? wow, that's kind of corny," you scoffed. "um... it's not really dark, but... i don't know. sometimes i just want to run away and get away from everything. people can be so shitty sometimes, and you reach a point where you just can't deal with it anymore. i think i'm at that point. sorry, that's kind of embarrassing to share with a stranger." you lick your lips as you gather your thoughts. "anyway, truth or dare?"
you can hear the voice chuckle. "i like a woman who speaks her mind. talking to someone about your problems is always nice, especially when they can relate. i think that's a good fantasy, running away from your problems and starting fresh. can't say i haven't ever thought of it," they reply, their tone laced with empathy. "dare, all the way."
it's a little relieving to hear someone who can relate to you, even if they are a creepy stranger.
you come back from your thoughts. "i dare you to tell me your name."
the voice on the other end lets out a laugh as they think about your dare. "oh, alright, if you insist." their tone shifts to sound more flirtatious as they continue. "that's such a boring dare, though." they pause for a moment before speaking again. "my name is... well, you can call me ghostface." ghostface states, their tone a bit more arrogant as they introduce themselves.
"very funny," you scoff, not believing them. there's no way in your mind that you're flirting on the phone with a slasher in queens. "come on, who are you? are you just messing with me at this hour?"
you can hear the voice sounding annoyed by your response, their tone shifting away from flirtatious. "you think i don't have the guts after one conversation? you know what, forget it. i was trying to have some fun with this, but it's clear you don't appreciate it. let's start the game over." the voice pauses for a moment before speaking again. "truth or dare?" they ask, their tone serious now.
"what?" you question, the adrenaline threatening to surge through your veins from how abruptly uncomfortable it got. "truth..."
you can hear the voice sounding eager as you pick truth. "alright then. here's your truth. what are you wearing right now?" the voice asks, their tone sounding flirtatious again.
"my pajamas... why?" you ask, confused and weirded out as your heart begins to pound nervously.
you hear a low chuckle on the other end of the line.
"no reason. it's just hard to make out what you're wearing from here," ghostface taunts nonchalantly, a sinister edge in their voice.
"what the fuck?" you shout out, fear and anger coursing through you.
"well, it's time for the dare. here's your dare," the voice said, pausing for a moment. "i want you to look out your window. take a good look," ghostface spoke, their tone now commanding.
you were too shocked to respond, but you reluctantly moved the curtain aside and peered out the window, surveying the ground below. to your relief, everything appeared normal—nothing out of place or ominous.
"nothing..." you mumbled, your confusion growing.
ghostface chuckled on the other line. "open your window," the voice demanded.
your heart dropped, apprehension seizing you.
"what?" you asked, your confusion intensifying as you focused your gaze on the window.
ghostface's tone became more forceful. "i said, open your window," they commanded, their voice leaving no room for negotiation.
you didn't respond, feeling your breathing quicken over the phone as you grappled with the presence of this mysterious individual. you sensed their frustration as they let out a sigh and licked their lips.
"you know what, how about another round of truth or dare? it's my turn," the voice taunted.
you began to slowly back away towards your bed, your instincts urging you to distance yourself from this unsettling situation.
"truth or dare?" ghostface asked, their tone growing impatient.
but you didn't answer, the scary reality of the moment setting in. fear tightened its grip around your heart.
"truth or dare? don't make me say it again," ghostface insisted.
you remained silent, a mix of fear, defiance, and self-preservation guiding your actions.
"oh, what the hell. no more choices then, (y/n). i dare you to open your windo-" before ghostface could finish their sentence, you abruptly hung up the phone and swiftly pulled the curtain shut, blocking out any further interaction with the mysterious caller.
"(y/n)? c'mon, don't be a party pooper," ghostface said, their tone flirtatious once again as the line went silent. a few seconds later, you heard quiet shuffling behind you, causing your heart to pound with fear.
realizing that you needed to take action, you swiftly grabbed the chair from your desk and dragged it into the hallway outside your room. you closed the door and positioned the chair below the doorknob, creating an obstacle that would make it difficult for someone to open the door, though not impossible.
suddenly, your heart skipped a beat as the sound of glass shattering echoed from inside your room, followed by a loud thud hitting the floor. your adrenaline surged, and before you could react, the door handle began to jiggle violently. you heard the sounds of your belongings being knocked over, accompanied by a loud crashing noise as the entire door shook. the playful tone in ghostface's voice had vanished, replaced by a sinister and threatening tone.
backing away from the door, you clutched your phone tightly, fearing it might break between your trembling palms.
"leave me the fuck alone!" you yelled, your voice filled with desperation. "if you know what's best for you, you'll leave now."
a sinister chuckle came through the door as it shook violently. ghostface sounded excited, his tone now both menacing and playful. "no matter how hard you try to push me away, i'm not going anywhere, babe. so you might as well just... let me in. you don't want me to break this door down. please don't make me."
"i'm not doing a damn thing!" you yelled back, your voice quivering with a mix of anger and fear as you ran downstairs.
frantically reaching for the railing, you rushed down the stairs while simultaneously dialing 911. the operator answered with the familiar "911, what's your emergency?" prompt as you frantically explained your terrifying situation. you provided them with your address and informed them of the intruder's presence in your home.
suddenly, you heard a loud bang. "you know, the police might not get here in time to help you, (y/n)!" ghostface taunted, his words sending a chill down your spine. "who are you going to call for help? your dead boyfriend?"
as the woman on the other end of the line asked if you had a place to hide, time seemed to slow down, reminiscent of that dreadful night at the party. slowly, you turned your gaze upward from the floor below, your eyes fixated on your once-barricaded bedroom door.
"sorry about him, by the way. i tried to talk to him, i really did! didn't go too well," ghostface spoke, his voice laced with a disturbing mix of amusement and regret. "i guess all those muscles didn't help much."
ghostface had broken down the door, and your eyes darted towards the bathroom— the closest room you could hide in— as you shut the door behind you, hoping to buy yourself some time.
"he seemed like a decent guy for you, shame i had to carve him up like a pumpkin. no one really appreciates a good woman anymore. i probably did you a favor, taking the trash out, if you catch my drift," ghostface taunted, his tone oozing with cockiness and a disturbing familiarity with your personal life.
you could hear ghostface getting closer, their footsteps echoing on the wooden floor as they walked down the nearby stairs and stopped outside the door to the room you were hiding in. the sound of their footsteps sent shivers down your spine. "come out... come out... c'mon now. you have until i count to three," ghostface stated, their voice filled with malicious anticipation.
"one... two..."
the constant banging on doors, shaking of doorknobs, and rummaging through cabinets echoed through the house as ghostface searched for you. each sound made your heart skip a beat, and you held your breath, hoping to remain undetected. the heavy thud of ghostface's boots against the floor reverberated through the room before fading away, only to return again as they continued their relentless pursuit. it felt like an endless, torturous game, until suddenly, silence engulfed the house.
"i-i think they're gone," you whispered into the phone, relief tinged with uncertainty evident in your voice as you spoke to the operator.
"is there a nearby exit? anywhere you could run to?" the woman on the other end asked, her voice filled with concern.
you responded with a quiet "yes," knowing that your back door was just around the corner.
quietly, you opened the top cabinet in your bathroom and retrieved a pair of scissors, holding them tightly as a makeshift weapon. you pressed your ear against the bathroom door, straining to hear any signs of ghostface's presence. their footsteps had become distant, as if they had moved to another part of the house. slowly, you pushed the door open, cringing at the subtle creaking it made, and cautiously peeked out. taking a deep breath, you mustered the courage to get up and began walking toward the back door, your eyes fixed on it and the window view it provided. but as you approached, something caught your eye— a reflection.
"three."
you felt a powerful, gloved hand wrap firmly around your waist, pulling you tight against their chest. a scream escaped your lips, swiftly stifled by a hand covering your mouth. desperate to break free, you fought with all your strength, but ghostface's grip was unyielding. the more you wriggled and struck out, the tighter they held you, pressing you closer against them.
summoning courage, you ruthlessly stomped on their foot, causing them to lose their balance. their back collided with the wall, granting you a momentary advantage. seizing the opportunity, you lunged forward, brandishing the scissors, aiming to strike them in the shoulder.
however, just as you were about to make contact, another hand clamped around your wrist, its grip unrelenting. "don't try that with me," a voice hissed. ghostface's grip on your wrists tightened, sending a painful sting coursing through your veins. they forcefully redirected your hand away from them, forcing your arm downward until you had no choice but to surrender. struggling to maintain your hold on the scissors, your resistance faltered.
you released a pained moan as your arm throbbed with tenderness. the ominous figure in the black cloak forcefully pushed you against the counter, causing your hand to involuntarily open upon impact, and your phone slipped from your grasp, clattering to the floor.
ghostface retrieved the phone, briefly glancing in your direction before focusing once again on the screen. "she's busy right now," they remarked coldly to the operator before hanging up.
with one hand, ghostface held the side of your tear-streaked face, while the other pressed the cold blade of the knife menacingly against your neck. fear coursed through your veins as you felt the sharp edge against your skin, the chilling reality of the situation sinking in.
"shhh now," ghostface commanded, their voice cutting through the air. their grip tightened, the blade digging dangerously into toward your flesh.
you sniffled, attempting to steady your racing heart. everything felt surreal, as if you had stepped into a distorted reality within the confines of your own home. the anticipation of impending chaos loomed, but the expected eruption never arrived. instead, an eerie silence settled over the scene, intensifying the disorientation.
a loud sob escaped your lips as you clung desperately to the edges of the counter, inadvertently cutting off circulation to your fingers. ghostface's hold tightened as they pulled back on the knife, the sharp blade now threateningly grazing your skin. their other hand covered your mouth, their grip unyielding. "just stay still. you don’t wanna do anything you might regret, right? now, say, 'i understand,'" ghostface uttered.
their gaze took in your terrified state as their grip gradually loosened and demeanor softened. ghostface's gloved hand tenderly wiped away a tear cascading down your flushed cheek.
"i-i understand,” repeating their words as your voice trembled.
their hands forcefully propelled you to the side, slamming you against the wall. through teary, half-lidded eyes, you gazed up at them as their imposing figure loomed over you.
their hand glided to the bottom of the ghostface mask, gripping the edge of the chin, and with a swift motion, they yanked it off and tossed it aside. cascading gracefully down to their shoulders was blonde hair, adorned with pink-dyed tips and one side partially shaved. their skin possessed an ethereal paleness, and their piercing blue eyes held a mysterious allure. a glint from the moonlight reflected off an eyebrow piercing, adding to their enigmatic visage.
and then it hit you. it was gwen stacy, your classmate.
the last person you would ever have expected. a smile played upon her lips, relishing in your bewildered expression. "gwen...?" you managed to utter, your voice barely a whisper. "-the hell?"
reaching into her cloak, gwen retrieved a voice changer box from her chest and raised it to her lips. "hello, (y/n). surprised?" she asked, a sly tilt to her smile.
"w-what..." you tried to speak, but the words eluded you.
"i know this is incredibly confusing and terrifying right now, but i promise i won't harm you," she assured, her thoughts seemingly racing.
gwen's smile grew, taking on a hint of obsession. "i've watched you for so long... you have no idea how much i've longed to be this close to you. you're such a beautiful girl," gwen confessed, her tone simultaneously tender and erratic. her hand still clutched the knife, and she tilted her head, regarding you with a disconcerting smile. the proximity between you two was impossible to ignore.
"please, just... just let me go, and we can forget all of this," you pleaded, desperation lacing your words.
gwen cocked her head to the side, furrowing her eyebrows. "why forget this? why would i want to forget a moment like this?" her gaze bore down upon you, her once vibrant blue eyes now tainted with a dark ink-like hue, consuming you with an unsettling hunger.
"why are you doing this, gwen?" you managed to ask, your voice trembling and breaking.
gwen shrugged, her shoulders slumping forward as if weakened by the mention of her own name. "fuck, i love the way you say it," she confessed, her tone laced with an unsettling fondness.
drawing closer, gwen closed the distance until your chests were pressed together. in a surprising turn of events, she flung the knife to the far side of the floor, the sound grating against your ears like nails on a chalkboard.
"don't you get it?" she stated matter-of-factly. "i like you. you're the kindest girl in school. honest, pretty, genuine. did i mention pretty? every time we talked, whether it was a small conversation in class or when you defended others from dumb gossip, you always showed such kindness. who wouldn't be drawn to a girl like that? that's why i did it."
your heart felt as though it had been submerged in acid. on one hand, her words melted your heart, evoking emotions you had never experienced with any boy before. however, simultaneously, a sense of violation and terror gnawed at you.
"what... what did you do?" you cautiously inquired, your voice faltering.
gwen reached down and intertwined her hands with yours, their grip tightening. "i killed your boyfriend," she confessed.
your head lowered as you shakily swallowed, the weight of her words sinking in.
"he wasn't right for you, (y/n). who cheats on their girlfriend with their own friends and pretends to care about them? you don't deserve that. you deserve so much more. you deserve everything. he never bothered to remember your favorite hobbies, your preferred makeup style, or even how you write the number five. he failed to appreciate everything you've been through or know how to comfort you, to make you feel good, to be a good boyfriend. if i had you, i would never treat you that way. especially after harry's party," she explained, her voice unwavering. "that night, i was dressed as a ghost because it seemed ironic, considering i'm the invisible loser of the school, right? that's when i saw randy with that girl and you running out crying. no one has the right to make you cry like that, especially not quarterback randy. so i went to confront him, told him how messed up it was. he pushed me, called me just another weirdo obsessed with you. maybe he was right, but the way he spoke of you, the words he used? i couldn't let it slide, (y/n). out of anger, i just threw my glass at his chest, i didn’t expect it to kill him. but it did."
your mouth hung open in shock and fear. gwen's grip on your hands tightened as she raised them higher until they rested at the sides of your head. your mind felt as if it were splitting in two, and your vision blurred. the onslaught of overwhelming information threatened to induce nausea, leaving you reeling.
“and god, did it feel so fucking good to kill him. if you told me all i had to do was get into a fight with your sigma male boyfriend who’s best friend's name is literally chad, just to get noticed by you, i would’ve done if in a heartbeat months ago,” she shouted, beginning to pace.
her eyes were wide, and you could tell just by her talking about it she wa reliving the thrill of the moment.
"i... i don't understand," you stammered, desperately trying to free your hands from gwen's grasp. she watched your movements intently, her eyes locked onto yours. "gwen, you fucking killed someone. why would you do that? do you realize the consequences of your actions?"
on one hand, you were furious that she had taken a life, but on the other, a part of you was unnerved by the intensity of the love she professed for you. it was as if, for the first time, someone truly appreciated your mere existence. you despised how drawn you felt to her, despite the circumstances.
"i don't care about him. i did it for you. i killed for you," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "what man can say that?"
conflicting emotions tugged at your heart. ultimately, you yearned to surrender control and experience her twisted version of affection.
"no one has ever spoken to me like this, and even when they did, it never felt... like this," you confessed, your voice filled with a mix of fascination and uncertainty. "it feels... exhilarating."
gwen leaned closer, her eyes shining with a spark of light. "really? are you serious?"
your heart fluttered at her smile as she gazed into your soul. what was happening to you?
"this is a feeling i've never experienced before, even in past relationships. i don't know... you make me feel special, seen, and desired," you admitted, your voice laced with confusion. "i don't know what's happening to me right now."
gwen's gaze fixated on you, her once cocky smile softening into an expression of empathy. she broke the connection between your intertwined hands, slowly withdrawing one of her own. bringing her hand to her lips, she lightly bit the tip of her glove and sensually peeled it off, revealing her bare skin.
"i can't believe any of this is real," she muttered, her breath caressing your face. "can i kiss you?"
the question caught you off guard, amidst the whirlwind of emotions and confusion. your mind felt scrambled, making it difficult to think clearly.
"yes," you mumbled, your voice wavering with uncertainty, yet your eyes betraying an eager anticipation.
gwen's eyes lit up at your response. "perfect," she breathed before pressing her lips against yours.
your heart began to race, pounding fiercely within your chest. this was the last place you expected to find yourself, and you couldn't help but feel a jumble of confusion and conflicting emotions. "that’s it— just relax... everything will be fine," gwen whispered, her voice now soothing and strangely comforting, despite the circumstances.
you nodded, tentatively wrapping your arms around her shoulders and drawing her closer to you.
gwen leaned in even closer, her hands now tangling in your hair as her body pressed against yours. as she kissed you, your breath caught in your throat. it felt wrong, like you shouldn't be enjoying it. yet, you couldn't deny the undeniable sensation of pleasure that gwen's soft lips evoked.
a whimper escaped your lips as gwen reluctantly pulled away, expression tinged with sadness from the loss of contact. her eyes held a look of longing and desire as they locked with yours.
"that was even better than i imagined," she whispered, her voice hushed but audible in the close proximity.
"i... i think i liked it too," you managed to reply, your gaze averting to conceal the flustered state you were in.
it was true. in that moment, you were completely captivated by gwen like never before.
"i came all this way just to see your beautiful face," gwen commented, her hand firmly grasping your chin to turn your gaze back towards her.
as your eyes flickered between her piercing gaze and her inviting lips, a smile spread across gwen's face. without hesitation, she pulled you closer and kissed you once more. the taste of her lingered on your lips, tempting you to fully embrace the forbidden situation. you knew it was wrong, and yet... there was an inexplicable allure to gwen's soft kisses that made you reluctant to let go. confusion clouded your mind, even as your body responded to the intoxicating sensations. you found yourself not wanting the kiss to end.
a moan escaped your lips as gwen's wet tongue grazed your bottom lip, igniting a surge of desire. your grip on her shoulders tightened, your fingers clawing at her black cloak.
gwen released a soft moan of her own as her tongue gently explored the depths of your mouth. her hands trailed down your body, her touch growing more suggestive. "(y/n)..." she whispered seductively, her voice laced with desire.
once again, your body seemed to revel in the moment, despite the confusion plaguing your mind. her tongue slipped deeper into your mouth, eliciting a whimper of pleasure. the taste and sensation sent waves of ecstasy coursing through your entire being.
conflicted and seduced, you clung tightly to her cloak, yearning for her lips to remain fused with yours as your heart pounded relentlessly.
gwen continued to kiss you passionately, her tongue exploring the inner recesses of your mouth. her touch grew bolder, and your mind struggled to process the overwhelming sensations. it all felt so wrong, and yet your body responded eagerly to gwen's every move. the kiss felt irresistible, betraying the rationality of your thoughts.
your hands instinctively trailed up from her shoulders to the nape of her neck, lightly pulling at her hair for support. another moan escaped your lips, blending with hers, as gwen positioned her leg between your thighs, creating a tantalizing friction.
gwen's hand firmly gripped the back of your neck, pulling you even closer as her lips devoured yours. the tension and confusion intensified within your mind, but despite it all, the physical pleasure of being so intimately entwined with gwen tantalized your senses. the sensation of her body pressing against yours caused a subtle squirming response. you couldn't deny the pleasure that coursed through you, even as the situation felt inherently wrong.
for a fleeting moment, your lips disconnected, allowing you to lock eyes, but the magnetic pull between you drew you back in. you leaned in, kissing her again with a primal hunger, your hands gripping her in an instinctive and passionate manner.
you found yourself gasping for air, your breaths ragged and desperate as you tried to replenish the oxygen you had forgotten to take in during the prolonged, intense kiss.
gwen pulled back, her head tilted to the side, a thin string of saliva connecting your lips briefly before she wiped it away with her gloved hand, smearing it aside. her messy blonde hair framed her face, and you noticed her chest heaving up and down, mirroring your own heavy breathing.
nervously, she asked, "can... can i take you out on a date?"
a smile spread across your lips, unable to resist the pull of excitement. "i'd like that," you replied almost instantly, catching your breath.
suddenly, the blaring sound of police sirens echoed through the block, their blue and red lights reflecting through your window. it seemed, for once, the police had arrived promptly.
"way to ruin a fun time," gwen scoffed, annoyance evident on her face as she stepped back. "i think it's time for me to go."
despite the interruption, you couldn't help but be captivated by how attractive gwen looked in that moment. her hair was tousled, her lips plump and bright red from your passionate kisses, and her eyes held a smoky allure.
"police, open up!" a voice yelled from outside the door, the knocking growing more forceful.
you glanced over at the door, which shook violently from the pounding, the sound of the sirens threatening to drown out your senses. when you turned your attention back to gwen, she had already retrieved her mask, putting it on over her head and securely fastening it. she removed her glove, then picked up the knife from the floor.
"so, about that date, how about saturday?" she asked, a smile gracing her lips.
you couldn't help but match her mood, the excitement bubbling within you. "yeah, that works," you answered eagerly.
gwen fiddled with the voice box, adjusting it before placing it back into her costume. "i can't wait," ghostface remarked, the iconic voice returning.
before you could respond, she swiftly made her way to the back door, disappearing into the night just as the police burst through your front door.
as the police stormed into your residence, the chaos unfolded. you were momentarily overwhelmed by the commotion, the loud voices, and the flashing lights. the officers quickly apprehended you, their stern commands blending with the cacophony of sirens outside.
moments later, the scene shifted. you found yourself sitting in the back of an ambulance, surrounded by paramedics who were checking you over for any injuries. the blaring sirens had been replaced by a steady hum, providing a strange sense of calm amidst the chaos you had just experienced.
one of the paramedics, a kind-faced woman with a gentle demeanor, asked, "are you feeling alright? can you tell us if anything hurts?"
you took a deep breath, trying to gather your thoughts amidst the adrenaline coursing through your veins. "i... i think i'm okay," you replied, your voice shaky yet relieved. "just a bit shaken up."
the paramedic nodded understandingly, her gloved hands skillfully examining you for any signs of physical harm. after a thorough assessment, she reassured you, "physically, you seem to be alright. however, it's important to take care of yourself emotionally too. if you need someone to talk to, don't hesitate to reach out."
you offered a grateful smile, appreciating her empathy in the midst of the chaotic aftermath. "thank you," you said sincerely. "i'll keep that in mind."
“we already reached out to your guardian so they’ll be here soon, just rest up,” the woman stated before walking off.
as the paramedics finished their assessment and went to speak to the police for whatever further evaluation, your mind wandered back to the unexpected encounter with gwen.
something about this situation felt deeply unsettling. not only was gwen a killer, but her behavior had crossed the boundaries of normalcy into something much darker. the realization of her true nature sent chills down your spine, prompting a wave of revulsion.
however, you couldn't deny the conflicting emotions that had stirred within you during those fifteen minutes with gwen. for the first time in your life, someone has shown you such profound attention and affection, making you feel loved, appreciated, and even worshiped for simply being yourself. it was a heady mix of excitement and nervousness, emotions you had never experienced to this extent with any previous crush.
as you whispered the word "crush" to yourself, a sinking feeling settled in. you couldn't deny that you had allowed yourself to become entangled in a dangerous situation.
deep down, you knew that going through with the date was a sick and misguided decision. it went against your better judgment and morality. the allure of the attention and desire overshadowed your rationality, blinding you from the bright red flags waving in front of your face.
but you are your parents' daughter, so maybe you can fix her.

Hihi! So I was watching a bootleg of the musical last night and I noticed how Ponyboy fiddled with his necklace a lot. Tbh I already had the headcanon he uses it as a self soothe but it affirmed me!! Maybe Darry gave it to him when they were younger because he would start crying to easily? Pony tried to use it as a reminder that Darry cares, although it more often felt like a reminder that their relationship just got worse. It's more of the former now, though. :)
I love that! Adding my own spin, I know Soda wears a dog tag in the musical as well. Darry’s the only one not wearing anything around his neck, so I’m gonna go ahead and imagine that Pony’s pegasus necklace belonged to their mother and Soda’s dog tag belonged to their father.
Darry was the one who had possession of both necklaces and either the day of or a few days following the funeral, he gave them each their respective necklace so they would always have a way of carrying their parents with them. Darry never gave himself that comfort, nor could he. Having any kind of dangling accessory while he worked with drills and nail guns and other dangerous equipment wasn’t a good idea.
It also separates him further from his parents, almost like a reminder that he’ll never take their place.

'Oh, Marley! While I remember!’
Marley had begun to follow the boys towards the exit of the station, having just been briefed by the chief on a new case, but turned back around to see what Juliet had to say.
'I spoke to Damon and he's looking forward to going out with you! Does Thursday night work?'
Oh. Right. The guy Juliet was trying to set her up with. He was nice enough, and from the short conversation they’d had when they met the other day they seemed to have a few things in common, but she just wasn’t feeling a connection. Especially when she already had her eye on someone else, as unlikely as that was to come to fruition.
'Yeah, uh, Thursday works.’
'Perfect! I'll let him know!'
Even though she wasn’t real keen on the idea, it was hard to say no to Juliet. She was like an adorable little puppy eager to please and Marley didn’t have the heart to disappoint her by saying no. Besides, she wasn’t expecting her little crush to go anywhere. The guy she was interested in seemed to view her as little more than a professional acquaintance, a friend at the most, so she might as well give Juliet’s friend a chance. Who knows, he might be just the thing she needs to move on.
Lassiter watched the scene in front of him unfold out of the corner of his eye. Not due to any personal interest of course, he was only paying attention because it was happening right in front of him. Maybe closer to the chief’s office than his desk, but still in his clear line of vision so they might have well have been right under his nose. But regardless of the schematics, his curiosity was piqued. This ‘Damon’ being a new character to him, and a sketchy one at that if his name was anything to go by, as it conjured the image of some punk in a band.
'What was that about?' he asked his partner as she passed him by on the way to the small coffee station behind his desk.
'Hmm? Oh! There's this guy I know through my gym that seems really interested in Marley, we ran into him when we were getting coffee the other day and I thought I'd set them up,' Juliet happily explained the situation to him, though enthusiasm wasn't shared. Lassiter couldn't explain why, but a small yet heavy pit had begun to form in his stomach.
'They seemed to really hit it off,' Juliet continued, not noticing (or thinking out of the ordinary) her partners sudden frown and furrowed brow, too excited by the match she had just made, ‘and I think they would make a really cute couple.’
'Hmm, she doesn't seem very excited to me,’ he couldn’t help but grumble out his observation, having noticed Marley’s own lack of enthusiasm.
But Juliet wasn’t fazed, 'that's just Marley, she's shy about this kind of stuff. I mean, she’s even funny about accepting drinks from strangers.’
‘But I thought she preferred women?’ he was grasping at straws now, her attraction to the same sex one of his last lines of defence against admitting to himself that he had feelings for her.
‘Yes, but in the-‘ she took a second to remember what Marley had once said, ‘‘stereotypical loves every woman but only certain men bisexual way’ – her words.’
Her assurance did nothing to placate him. Only proving to deepen the pit in his stomach from the news that her sexuality was no longer a barrier, that no matter how small, he had a chance. But all that aside, why should the thought of Marley dating someone affect him? It wasn't his business what she got up to outside of work. Even if it did involve some degenerate who probably sells bootleg DVD’s out of the boot of his car.

With the case all wrapped up, all that was left for the trio to do was collect their wages from the station.
While the boys argued over the division of the cheque, Gus believing he was entitled to a bigger cut this time around due to his larger than usual contribution (facing one of his many fears), Marley found herself standing by Lassiter, watching the fight unfold.
Lassiter, unable to think of anything else to say, but also unable to resist the pull he felt towards her, started up a conversation by asking her about the topic that had been constantly on his mind lately.
‘So, Williams, how was your uh- your date the other night?’
‘You heard about that?’ she was surprised that he was asking about it, the detective usually happy to keep personal business private.
‘O’Hara was struggling to contain her excitement about it, practically gushing to anyone who would listen.’
‘Yeah, that sounds like Jules,’ she thought to herself before responding, ‘God, she reminds me of my mother sometimes. Getting worked up anytime someone shows the slightest bit of interest in me. Am I really that tragically single? Anyways, it was nice, I guess.’
‘Just nice?’ he wasn’t sure he really wanted to know how her date went, but he got the feeling it wasn’t anything to write home about, which gave him the courage to ask.
‘Well, it might have been better if I didn’t spot Shawn and Gus sitting a couple of tables away, wearing fake moustaches and trying to hide behind their menus every time I looked their way,’ she explained with the exasperated yet amused expression that seemed to follow the duo wherever they went.
Her response got a scoff and an eyeroll out of the detective, ‘idiots. Can’t take them anywhere.’
‘Yeah, even when you try your best not to. I was so careful about not letting slip the time and location too. But of course, Madame Raya over there figured it out,’ she rolled her eyes, the man was annoyingly perceptive sometimes, ‘but even without their interference it was kind of a bust. Don’t get me wrong, he was nice enough and we got on well, but it just wasn’t it, y’know?’
Though he knew that the right thing to do would be to comfort her over her failure of a date, assure her that the right person was out there waiting for her, he couldn’t do it. It might have made him a bad person, but he was glad that the date hadn’t worked out. He might have still been coming to terms with the fact that he liked the woman, not ready to ask her out tomorrow or even next week, but a selfish part of him was glad that he hadn’t missed his chance, that she hadn’t found someone else in the meantime.
~}i{~
Juliet watched the two of them from her desk, the way they interacted making something click in her mind. Lassiter’s behaviour whenever Damon was mentioned started to make sense to her - he was jealous. He liked Marley.
Watching Marley smile and laugh with the surly detective also set off a lightbulb. She thought she was into Damon but compared to how she was acting right now, she realised that she was only being friendly with him. That this is how she acts around someone she truly likes.
It was like she was seeing them with new eyes, how could she have been so blind! Did anyone else know about this? Surely the guys had to know, if not from knowing Marley so well then from the spirits or whatever it was Shawn gets his information from.
She wasn't discouraged though – far from it. Maybe this attempt at matchmaking didn't work out, but she was sure that her next one would.

maybe weird q but i dont rly see anyone talk about it in reviews that much but what was the darry x dally dynamic like? like how ws their argument before ggah and then the confrontation in act 2? how did josh and brent play it?
i’m going to preface this with this was my first time seeing the show and i’ve never watched a bootleg so i don’t have anything to compare it to, plus i think i lowkey blacked out a bit lol.
brent was playing darry as very sad and empty last night but when he was interacting with dally he was ANGRY like, the confrontation before titt they both seemed to HATE each other and brent shoved josh HARD onto the car. it was a lot more intense than i expected it to be but idk if that’s how it always is played or if it was more angry and intense last night than usual. I honestly don’t really remember how their argument before ggah went. i remember that darry just seemed exasperated with dally. like i said brent was playing darry as very empty and tired last night and i feel like it made his interactions with dally even more harsh because there was such a tone shift in his delivery.
josh was playing dally as very matter of fact and confident in his place in pony’s life and in the gang so i think it made a really interesting dynamic when darry was coming at him fueled by nothing but raw anger and dally was confidently asserting himself and defending pony and his relationship with him.
idk if any of this makes sense i feel like im rambling super hard 🤪😭😳

my first fictional crush was goku at age maybe 6.
the first fanfiction i ever wrote was FF7. the second one was DBZ. the third was a crossover between them both. i was like. 8 or 9.
in 5th grade, i got in trouble in school for passing handwritten DBZ fanfiction back and forth with the boy who sat front of me in class, and my mom refused to yell at me for it because she was glad that i was doing something creative.
DBZ was one of the things that my brother and i actually did together as kids. we were never close because he's 6 years older than me, but i have distinct memories of coming home from school and he'd be waiting with the next 3 or 4 DBZ episodes he'd downloaded from the internet, japanese fansubbed in english because the english dub hadn't released past the frieza saga yet. so i knew how the series went before any of my friends did. he would also go to chinatown in NYC and come home with bootleg fansubbed VHS tapes of DBZ movies. this was like circa 1999-2001. i still have them at my mom's house.
before i knew that cosplay was a thing that people actually did, i went as pan from DBGT for halloween when i was 12.
when i did find out what cosplay was, i was too afraid to do it properly, so when i went to my first convention at 17 with a boyfriend who did not want to go with me but i made him go anyway (it was AnimeNEXT 2007), i threw together a closet cosplay of a genderbent mirai trunks. and i actually found the fucking picture i took of it in the bathroom at my mom's house.
Tumblr media
(that's the closest you're ever going to get to a proper face reveal btw lmao a 17 year old picture of me where you can see more of my tits than my face.)
i then went on to properly redo my pan cosplay, and i cosplayed chichi as well. took a picture at a con with a lil baby like 3 year old who was dressed up as goku. can't find it right now though.
in 2011, i went to anime boston with @feelboss and @theggning and drunkenly ran into sean schemmel (the english voice of goku) and somehow ended up on stage with him later that night, still wasted, at the hentai dubbing panel. faked an orgasm on stage for goku in front of about 200 people. my first fictional crush. probably the most iconic moment of my con-going days. i was 21.
the very first time i was able to use analysis of a character's arc to accurately predict their future portrayal in canon was mirai trunks. when his db super arc aired, i remember just being totally floored like, "i can't believe i actually called so much of this" -- especially considering the fact that DB never really had much of a reputation of being consistent.
i just have so many memories of staying up late with @godtier watching DB and shitposting and RPing bardock and raditz and trolling the fuck out of each other, and just
man DB was such a huge part of my life and just... felt like it was always there for me.
i don't normally mourn celebrity deaths, but i feel like i've spent the last 30 years of my life with akira toriyama. losing him hurts so much. it feels like the world has had a little bit of hope fade away from it. i have a headache from crying.
i know that i would always meme on you for forgetting your own characters, but... thank you, toriyama-san. for everything.

title: where there is darkness pairing: dean/cas tags: historical au (1950s), angst with a happy ending, gay but in sepia
Posting a (long) sneak-peek of this fic, because I'm getting restless not sharing this. Enjoy!
***
As with most things in his life, Dean has a love-hate (but mostly hate) relationship with this lighthouse.
It’s easy to take care of on sunny days and clear nights, but it’s grueling during a storm or fog. Sun shines through the window in the midday, providing warmth, but it’s ever-loving cold the rest of the time.
It provides him with shelter from the outside world.
But it traps him in, like a caged animal.
Love, hate—day in and day out. And right now, standing against the railing of the balcony with an unlit cigarette dangling from his lips and the wind whipping at his back, it’s hate.
The light’s ready for the dusk that’s beginning to settle on the harbor. Dean’s cleaned the lens and brewed the meths. He turned on the tap, set a match to the mantle. The routine is so familiar, he could do it in his sleep. The light rotates behind him, illuminating his back briefly before turning its watchful eye to the rest of the harbor.
Bright, dark. Bright, dark. Around and around like a carousel.
Him and this lighthouse go way back, like a bad relationship that he can’t quit. When John moved him and Sam to Kittery and started work on this light, Bobby would bring Sam and Dean to visit during the fortnightly supply runs. Every visit was like a further punch to the gut to remind him of what he’d lost. It wasn’t like the light they’d all lived at when Dean’s mom was alive, with a cozy house that always smelled like freshly baked bread. This was a cold, sterile environment that smelled like three guys living in close quarters. And John—
He could barely look Dean and Sam in the eye when they visited.
After a few months at Whaleback, John seemed to relax into the work and his smile came more easily, but Dean would smell the whiskey on his breath.
After a while, Bobby stopped taking Sam and Dean at all.
The lighthouse took John and swallowed him whole. During his brief few days of shore leave, he’d just sit with a bottle at the table. Dean came to dread it, since it meant that the money he’d squirreled away in the coffee can on top of the cupboard would inevitably be pilfered for booze money.
Dean doesn’t know why he’s thinking about all of this, or about John. Maybe it’s because of where he’s currently standing.
Muttering a curse, Dean pulls the zippo out of his pocket and lights the cigarette.
“Got you.”
Dean turns as his brother comes onto the walkway, collar popped and hands deep into his coat pockets. His cheeks are already pinched red from the cold.
Dean adopts an easy posture, arms settling on the railing as he leans back with a grin. It hides the bitter taste of nostalgia still on his tongue. “I said I wanted to quit, not that I was going to quit.”
Sam rolls his eyes, then joins Dean at the railing. “Light all set?”
“Yup. Everything’s good. Go get some shut-eye.”
“I thought it was my shift tonight.”
Dean shrugs a shoulder. “Not tired. I can take the whole night.”
“You took the whole shift last night, too,” Sam says with a frown. “What about that chamomile tea Bobby brought last week? Did you try that?”
“Not drinkin’ a flower. I’ll sleep the old-fashioned way.”
“Clearly that’s not working.”
“I’ll take the shift tonight.” Dean levels his brother with a stare. “Okay?”
Lips twisted into a frown, wind sweeping at his hair, Sam suddenly looks like a younger snot-nosed version that had that same miserable look when Dean tried to tell him that Dad volunteered himself for a double shift that month. Before the Coast Guard took over during the war, things were more relaxed—less regulated. John was able to take all the double, triple shifts as he pleased, drinking himself stupid with all the bootlegged liquor in the cellar.
It always upset Sam, when their dad didn’t come home. He was a sensitive kid.
Just like all those years ago, Dean’s heart is punched out with a desire to make that frown leave Sam’s face.
“You wanna sneak back with Bobby tomorrow when he comes for the supply run? Go see Eileen? I can cover things here.”
Sam rolls his eyes with a scoffed laugh. “That’s a pretty terrible first impression to make on the new keeper Bobby’s bringing in.”
Fuck. Dean had forgotten about that. “That’s tomorrow?” he asks with a wince.
“Yes, and we need him to last more than a week, unlike the last guy. Otherwise the Coast Guard is not going to let us have a say in who comes or stays anymore.”
“Last guy was a pansy,” Dean grumbles around his cigarette.
“You punched him in the face, Dean.”
Dean glares out at the thin line of the distant shore and doesn’t reply.
“Since you’re a vet, they’re taking it easy on us,” Sam continues, “but Bobby was talking to someone up in a higher rank the other day and—I think this is our last chance.” He clears his throat. “Your last chance.”
“The hell you mean?” Dean asks, drawing up to a straight back. “They’re gonna sack me?”
“Move you, I think. To a solo light on the shore.”
Dean throws up a hand. “Well, fine. Let them. What’s the problem?”
There’s that miserable look again. Sam won’t raise his head as the unspoken words hang between them. Dean stays silent, challenging Sam to say it.
“You know what the problem is, Dean,” Sam quietly says.
Yeah. Dean knows. He knows that without Sam, Dean at a solo light would probably end with him hanging from the rafters.
Blowing out a drag of smoke into the wind, Dean hunches back over the railing. “I’ll try,” he concedes. “But if he’s a dumbass—”
“Then I’ll train him,” Sam interjects. “You don’t even have to be in the same room as him. We’ll put him on the early morning shifts, make him sleep in the afternoons.”
Dean huffs out a laugh. “Make him stay in the service room listening to the radio.”
A grin forming on Sam’s face, he adds, “Tell him that shore leave is ten days instead of four so he stays off the lighthouse for longer.”
“Yeah, the Coast Guard won’t notice that.”
“Whatever it takes for you to cohabitate with this guy, I say we do it,” Sam says with a shrug. “Get creative.”
Dean makes a move to flick the stub of his cigarette away; Sam grabs his arm to stop him. “I just cleaned the landing, Dean.” With a scowl, Dean tosses it into the ocean instead.
Sam runs a hand through his messy hair and sighs, the disapproval evident in his frown. “Need anything before I go down to the bunks?”
“Nah. Get some sleep, Sammy.” Dean gives his brother a smack on the chest in dismissal. “I’ll wake you for the morning shift.”
“Okay, but actually wake me this time. Don’t let me sleep in until nine.”
Dean taps out another cigarette from the carton he fishes out of his pocket. “No promises.”
“And let me actually make breakfast tomorrow, too!” Sam calls before he disappears through the door.
“I would if your eggs weren’t shit!” Dean barks back. His words are snatched up by the wind. He turns back toward the ocean, clicking the lighter as he holds it up to the cigarette butt. “Seriously, who raised you?”
Blowing out another puff of smoke, the cigarette still caught between his teeth, Dean eyes the shoreline. Their new keeper is probably staying at Bela’s place, if it’s still even running. The inn nearly went under last year after her parents declared bankruptcy. He ran with her a few times in high school before he cut town—she was sharp around the edges. Misunderstood. Just like him.
He remembers the new guy’s resume. It had stood out to him among the rest, mainly because he seemed the least qualified. Didn’t make sense at all why the Coast Guard chose him as the new rookie, when five men before him—way more experienced, to boot—didn’t last.
No family, no money. Maybe that’s why they took him. That’s better, for these stag lights—bunch of single men with no families means there’s a better chance of them staying. It’s why the Coast Guard is itching to get a new keeper for the light, what with them eyeing recently married Sam, and Eileen, who’s in the family way.
It would make more sense for Sam to leave, get a position at a light with a house. Where he could see his family every night.
What Sam and Dean used to have, before Mary died.
Dean runs a hand down his face, letting out a curse. Whatever the word is for wishing for a time that he can’t get back to, ever—that’s what tonight is. Memories he didn’t ask for turning around and around in his head like a wheel. That’s what the sea does when you look out into it: shimmers back at you, showing you what you want to see. And sometimes what you don’t.
The door behind him creaks open again. With a grumble, Dean lets out a breath of smoke, a reprimand on his tongue for Sam to get the hell to bed.
A bang echoes through the air.
Dean drops his cigarette in surprise, whipping around to face the door. It yawns open, mercilessly blowing in the wind, banging against the side. Dean strides over to it and pulls it firmly closed before it breaks one of the windows.
The lens, green and opaque, flashes across his eyes; he squints as the light rotates away. Turning back to the railing, spots dotting his vision, he sees a shadow.
One taller than him, broader; stumbling toward the railing with a groan.
Dean closes his eyes, briefly; chest constricting. A trick of the light. It happens.
“It’s haunted!” one of the failed keepers had shouted as he stuffed his clothes into a carpetbag, stumbling down the stairs. “This place is fucking haunted!”
But that keeper had got it wrong—it wasn’t the lighthouse doing the haunting.
It was the person inside of it.

Bleach Returns Day 7: Always by your side / Betrayal / History
Got the trifecta on this one, baby, but it wasn't that hard, because Kubo loves packaging these three things together (if you allow interpreting 'history' as 'long personal history together', which I do).
Anyway, I'm never not thinking about Ichigo and Renji's first fight, and for a long time, I've been thinking about what happened immediately after Byakuya, Rukia and Renji returned to Soul Society, specifically that Rukia had to be extracted from her gigai by Squad 2 and then thrown in a holding cell and I am sure B didn't stick around for all that, which makes this the first private conversation Rukia and Renji got to have in 40 years.
| ao3 | ff.net | 2225 words, rated Teen for cussin' (tbf they both had a lot to cuss about)
Tumblr media
How many Onmitsukidou operatives does it take to get one soul out of a gigai? Renji wonders idly to himself. There is no punchline. All of this is one big joke, but certainly not the funny kind.
“This would probably go a lot faster if we could take her down to one of our medical units,” the Squad 2 spook who appears to be in charge of this shitshow says, sidling up to Renji. “Sir.”
“Sure,” says Renji. “Let’s go.”
“You don’t have clearance to accompany us, sir, but--”
“Then, no.”
“I could go fetch our Vice-Captain, if that would reassure you.”
“Go ahead,” Renji replies, calling the man’s bluff. Dealing with that blowhard Omaeda would really put the icing on the clusterfuck this entire night has been. On the other hand, it’s 2am, and even though the only part of this poor ninja’s face he can see is the eyes, he can tell how badly this guy does not want to have to go wake up his awful boss.
Renji makes a mental note to make sure all his subordinates know that he’d much rather be woken up at 2am than to catch wind later that they tried to start shit with some other squad’s vice-captain.
Fortunately, Rukia, whose timing is impeccable as always, manages to finally part ways with her horrible bootleg gigai, drawing in a huge breath of air with a loud, raspy gasp.
“How much soul fixer did you take?” one of the other spooks asks her pointedly. “That stuff is terrible for you.”
Rukia tells the guy to blow it out his ass, and Renji’s heart skips three beats. For the last few hours, he’s been studying her, watching, listening, trying to figure out if there’s anything of his Rukia left in her at all. The only thing that’s seemed familiar was that charade she put on at the end, acting all high and mighty and offended on the behalf of her noble brother. It’s been 40 years, but there was something in her posture, the resonance of her voice…classic tells of Rukia doing a bit. Maybe she wasn’t doing a bit, though. Maybe that’s just Rukia-as-Kuchiki. Renji’s spent more than a few sleepless nights wondering how in five realms Rukia would manage to turn herself into a noble. Faking it ‘til she made it was usually at the top of the list, but maybe her Kuchiki self would always have a ring of falsehood to it.
Captain Kuchiki often seems like he is doing a bit, too.
“I want a receipt for that gigai,” Renji announces.
The spook does a full-body cringe, and slouches off, muttering unflattering things about the Sixth Division. Renji doesn’t care. Hard-ass, rule-abiding vice-captain of Kuchiki squad is not a bit. It’s who he is now.
When the receipt comes, it’s actually a petty cash voucher with “GIGAI” written in the “Received” column, but it’s got a mostly legible signature and Squad 2 letterhead, and also it’s two in the fucking a.m., so Renji takes it.
“You need to borrow a pair of shackles?” the spook asks dryly. “Can put that on the receipt, too.”
Renji’s blood stops flowing, just for a second. Rukia is watching him. He hadn’t thought about this. She’s come along willingly up until now. He wishes he could trust her to continue in the same vein, but he can’t, both because she’s not trustworthy, and because the Vice-Captain of the Sixth isn’t a guy who lets his guard down on account of old friendships.
“No,” he says, and Rukia’s eyes narrow, ever so slightly. He jerks his chin at her. “Hands behind your back, if you don’t mind. Don’t need any dislocated shoulders.”
Her face becomes passive again as he casts bakudou number one on her. It’s easy enough that he doesn’t embarrass himself, although with the way this night has been going, it would certainly be no surprise.
A few minutes later, they step out into the night air, free of Squad 2 at last. There’s a breeze, which downgrades the humidity from “insufferable” to “unpleasant”, even just briefly. A thunderstorm was just finding its legs when they left the World of the Living. Renji wishes they would get one here, too, but it doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
The streets are empty at this time of night. Rukia looks straight ahead as they walk. There’s a hollowness to her eyes.
Renji’s not an idiot. Well. He is, but he’s not a fucking idiot. Rukia is not a person who shares her heart easily, but it’s because when she does, she carves off an entire piece and dumps it in your hands, bloody and tender. Why the Hell she would do so for some human kid is absolutely beyond Renji. They only live for about five days anyway and everything they do is absolutely nonsensical. Maybe some of it was that weird gigai. Probably messed with her head. She’ll likely be fine in a few hours. Well. Maybe not fine, but at least worried about the things she ought to be worrying about.
Renji thinks about all the things he had planned out to say to her. He had spent hours rolling them around in his head all through his last weeks at Squad Eleven. Even wrote some down on paper in little bulleted lists, like the study guides Momo used to make when they were at the Academy. He can’t say any of them now. He can’t say them because Rukia boned a routine mission so thoroughly that at least three other squads had gotten pulled into it. He can’t say them because, in his idiotic confidence that there had to be some logical explanation for all of it, that he and Captain Kuchiki would be able to swoop in and make things right for her, that he made both an asshole of himself and lost a fight pathetically, to a child. Finally, he can’t say them to her, because he is the Vice-Captain of the Sixth. And she is his prisoner.
Renji has never been much of an apologizer, and Rukia isn’t a person who requires apologies, but the absence of one hangs heavy between them. He can’t apologize for following orders though. Vice-Captain of the Sixth strikes again.
“You really didn’t need to stand there and glower at them for every second of that,” Rukia says, in a way that sounds like she’s talking to herself, but he knows is directed at him. “You’ve gotta feel kinda disgusting.”
Renji bristles. “What I feel is none of your business. Someone’s in my custody, and you think I’m gonna leave them alone with a bunch of slimy Squad 2 spooks for a single second?”
Rukia stares at him for a long moment. “I just meant that you could have gone to the washroom. You do know your face is covered in blood, right?”
Renji’s hand goes reflexively to his forehead. It feels mostly dried, at least. “Oh,” he says stupidly.
“Your chin, too.”
Renji grinds his teeth.
“It’s fine,” Rukia says lightly. “Impressive, I suppose, to someone who didn’t see how it happened. You certainly intimidated the shit out of those Squad Two morons.” She cocks an eyebrow at him slyly. “You gotta handkerchief on you? Let me out of this bind, I’ll wipe off your face for you.”
He tips his head to the side and regards her out of the corner of his eye. “Not a chance.”
“I had to give it a try,” she sniffs. “It’s not as if you wouldn’t catch me in two seconds if I tried to give you the slip.”
“Give it up,” he warns. “It won’t work on me. I know you too well.”
Rukia falls quiet and he regrets saying it. Forty years of working to raise himself to her level, and it feels like all he can do is remind her where they both came from.
“Renji,” she says, after a long pause, “about that.”
“Forget it,” he says.
She ignores him, just as she always has. “It wasn’t fair of me,” she says, “to grab your arm like that.”
He wishes he had to wrack his brain to figure out what she’s talking about, but the memory of tiny fingers wrapping over his knuckles, her knee jabbing the soft space between his shoulder blades, the sudden familiar weight of her hanging off his back.
Even without her powers, Rukia is still a soldier. She knows pressure points. She had access to his throat, his windpipe, his carotid. But instead, she grabbed his sword hand. A request. A plea, maybe. Don’t do it. Let him live.
She weighs nothing. Her gigai had the strength of a human girl. The only thing staying his arm was the unspeakable weight of their history together.
Time freezes. In Renji’s mind, the human kid’s fingers close on the hilt of his stupid, oversized sword.
Renji sparred against Rukia at the Academy, and they used to scrap as kids, sometimes more seriously than others, but Rukia has always had his back when it really mattered.
If Kurosaki had the least idea of what he was actually doing, he probably could have run Renji straight through, and Renji would have just stood there, his mouth hanging open like an idiot. He keeps telling himself that this was not Rukia’s intent. Maybe she thought better of his battle reflexes. He sure wishes he did. She only expected the kid to run. She probably has no idea how much hold she still has on his heart. Or, y’know. Maybe not. To all of it.
“Don’t get me wrong,” Rukia grumbles. “I don’t regret it. I would do it again. I’m just saying that it wasn’t fair of me to ask that much of you.”
“If you think I got my ass kicked as some sort of favor to you, you’re giving yourself a little too much credit,” Renji grunts. “That incompetence was 100% genuine and unfaked, but thanks for the show of confidence.”
“Oh, no, that was obvious.” She sighs and falls quiet.
He wonders what she thinks he would have done, if it had turned out he had any say in the matter. Does she think he would have spared Ichigo? Is this her inscrutable, Rukia version of a thank you? Or does she think he would have killed the kid, that leniency was too big an ask, and she doesn’t particularly hold it against him? Maybe she’s asking him to explain himself. What difference would it make? From her point of view, he has no particular incentive to tell her the truth, only whatever he wants her to hear.
“You…you can’t have worked for my brother for very long,” she finally says in a way that implies she’s not entirely sure of this fact. “You definitely didn’t work for him before I left, did you?”
“I just started,” Renji assures her.
“Well, then, maybe you don’t know him very well, but--”
“I know him well enough.”
Rukia’s mouth hangs open for a second. She licks her lips. “I see.” And then she smiles. Just a small one. Maybe a little bit rueful.
“What?” Renji demands peevishly. “What, exactly, do you see?”
“Just that you know, then. That he hates leaving things half done. That for as cool as he sounded, it probably caused him physical pain to leave Ichigo there without finishing him off.”
“You asked him to,” Renji shrugs. “It was a favor.” Her hand on his sword arm. A dramatic performance of a dutiful, penitent sister. Rukia always knows just the right way to ask for what she wants.
“You probably know that he’s not too generous with favors, either,” Rukia points out. “You could have reminded him that leaving humans with illicitly gained shinigami powers to expire of their wounds isn’t proper procedure.”
Renji doesn’t reply.
“You didn’t though.”
That’s right. He didn’t. It didn’t even occur to him. It should have. But Vice-Captain of the Sixth is still something he has to think about doing, and slipping into the support role on one of Rukia’s grifts has always been as natural as breathing.
Renji can see Squad Six’s gate up ahead. He is so tired. He just wants this night to be over.
“I woulda gone along with just about anything if it would get you to stop digging yourself a grave so deep you were about to break through to Hell, okay?”
She hums in agreement and makes a small nod.
“You’re such a pain in my ass, you know that, Rukia?”
She gives a soft snort. “Yeah,” she says, “I know.”

Okay Part 2! For some reason, i forgot to mention the new Gypsy casting with both girls in the Notebook as sisters! It's so exciting and I'm glad the cast is going into more shows since it's now closing, with John Cardoza going back to Moulin Rouge too. Interested to hear if Mama was Married now but I think all of the casting is good too with Danny Burstein as Herbie. They just announced Jordan Fisher in Urinetown too but I'm not really familiar with that show. But fun fact I have a book on my shelf with the play lol but I wanted to find a bootleg first I guess..idk lol. Are you familiar with it? Should I just listen to the cast album or wait for clips from Jordan Fisher and this cast?
If you want to know my ranking of bootlegs I watched for comparison, it would be Gatsby, Lempicka and then Gutenberg. However I missed the end of Gatsby, found Lempicka okay but somewhat hard to follow for some reason and dont remember many songs. Gutenberg didn't really have songs and a silly humor but I enjoy both actors a lot and think their humor together is great. However Book of Mormon is not really one of my favorites, so if you don't enjoy that, you probably wouldnt like this. It also took us days to watch but I think it picked up a lot in Act Two and got more bizarre and funnier. But it was also hard to follow since they kept switching characters and the plot isn't supposed to make sense anyway. I also didn't have a chance to listen to these cast albums yet or again besides Gatsby though. I also found a Merrily bootleg and I'm so excited to watch it but have to wait until I can be fully into it and not too tired I've also never listened to all of it except a few songs so I'm excited to see what I'll think of it and I'm a big fan of the revival cast. I've been into a Sondheim mood lately too and his shows always make me so emotional. So at some point I will listen to these along with the Merrily one when i watch it. I'm so excited cuz you love it so much as well!!! I also found Joy Woods and Jeremy in Little Shop that I might watch at some point..maybe closer to Halloween. It's such a different role from the Notebook too even voice wise so I do want to check it out at some point.
I did watch the Death Becomes Her movie last night and am now trying to imagine the upcoming musical. Have you watched it? I do think they are younger compared to the movie when age and looking younger is a big part of it. I also don't know how they would do some of the stunts or fake deaths so maybe they changed some stuff. But I liked it and think it has potential for a musical although I don't know what kind of music would work. Pop doesn't really make sense..idk. what do you think? I love Megan Hilty and think its great casting but that's basically all I know so far. Also the taste music video makes a bit more sense now lol.
Omg that's so cool you're seeing her tour! I saw a few clips of performances the other day on Twitter and it just looks really fun and she put thought into some of the sets and transitions too but idk if you saw or want to be surprised. Juno would be sooo fun live. When's your show? I hope you have a great time! I tried and failed to get Zayn tickets for his SF show in a month but he has never toured so it sold out. Not sure if I will as the show gets closer since it's less than a month now. But I am planning to go to Wicked in the next few weeks if I can. After that is Hamilton and also Kimberly Akimbo and Some Like it Hot is in January. I wanna go to all of these but they're so close together and it depends if I can get rush tickets, but the other shows I haven't listened or seen at all which is why I wanted to go and it seems fun going in somewhat blind but we will see.
I'm hoping to get back into reading more. I'm excited for Sally Rooney's new book but I also never read Beautiful World so maybe I will read that too. How is it so far? I only read the synopsis once I think. Also I'm excited for Jandy Nelsons new book that just came out. I loved the snippet I read but not sure when I will read it. I will go back to reading I'll Give you the Sun at the same time probably so I am excited for that.
I was listening to all of Katy Perry's music before her album and then the new album. Unfortunately I did not like it as much but it's growing on me. It reminds me of Dua's album sort of if you liked that and go in not expecting much..but my sister loved it and now I'm just accepting it as it is. It is not as bad as people said in my opinion and pretty similar to her other albums. Anyway now Lady Gaga just released a short album with a few new songs and covers from the new Joker movie. I feel like it's perfect timing cuz I always pair them together and grew up with following their careers. This is not her new album though..apparently that's coming in February. I know it's not really a musical, more like a jukebox musical with more classic type songs which I don't mind. I did watch the first one anyway so I will probably watch it and she will make it better and also with the songs. I remember they played send in the clowns at the end of the first one so I hope it could be similar to that. I also loved her in Star is Born but this movie will show the more campy Gaga style but the songs are almost similar to her singing with Tony Bennett since they're classics. I'm just a fan of her though and like that she can sing different styles. I do really love her new song with Bruno Mars that almost reminds me of a Broadway duet with a classic type of sound so if it's like that, I'll enjoy it. I'm listening to it later today and can tell you what I think.
Also one of my favorite bands The Cure announced a new song and a album coming out the week after Soccer Mommy! Both of their music really saved me these last few years and it totally shocked me. Their new song is so good and you should give it a listen to see if you like it since it's the same as my favorite type of songs from them lol but they do have more upbeat songs too. If you like it, I recommend their album Disintegration or Wish for more upbeat stuff lol and any Soccer Mommy album. Anyway since you mentioned musical recommendations, I recommend The Violet Hour with Jeremy, Santino Fontana and Erika from Mean Girls. I listened to it after Gatsby and thought it went well. The title song is so beautiful. I hope you like it. I hope you're doing well and have a good weekend! I went to six flags last weekend and might go again in October. My asks will probably be once a week from now on since I feel that works better anyway though. I always read your blog and posts and see your beautiful edits though and it makes me smile!
sorry for the delay in replying my friend!! 🤍 i hope you're having a good october so far!
i'm so so excited for joy and jordan! i wasn't the most keen on jordan when i saw her in the notebook in chicago (saw an understudy — juliette (who i adored) but i've grown to like jordan more through listening to her on the cast recording. but joy... i cannot wait to see her shine. i'm so excited for joy woods world domination. i want her in everything. and i'm really excited for the new cast too, like anna zavelson who was in the recent NYCC piazza that i enjoyed, and i've heard benji santiago was delightful in the muny in the heights, and aisha jackson is deeply beloved too! i am also really intrigued to see who they'll cast for the tour. and i think john cardoza should play middle noah next (just because i want to hear him sing leave the light on, it's not easy, forever, etc.) but also really want him to do other things (would love him to be orpheus in hadestown, or guy in once, or ... so many other lovely roles). it's just been a while i've seen someone as talented and charming and charismatic and sweet.
i am not very familiar with urinetown! i know like two songs, but i've been meaning to check it out very soon — maybe that'll be my cast recording for next week and then we can discuss? 👀 i have no idea if i should hunt for a bootleg either but i've heard people are quite intrigued by the cast.
i haven't seen bootlegs of gatsby or gutenberg, but my friend who loves lempicka sat me down and had me watch it with her. i wasn't charmed by it. i do not particularly care for book of mormon (have never seen it live, but watched a bootleg back in the day, and have listened to the cast recording before) but they have done a wonderful job of casting talented people (a lot of whom i adore) over the years. i hope you love the merrily boot; this production of merrily is just phenomenal. i have not seen the joy/jeremy little shop boot but 👀 i have actually also never seen little shop 😭 you'll have to let me know what you think of it!
i'm going to watch the death becomes her movie with my friend on tuesday! i know the musical did really well out of town and i'm really intrigued to see if it also does well on broadway! i really love megan hilty so i'm just happy she's employed.
i'm seeing sabrina on november 6th! still no idea what i'm going to wear to tour but my friends and i have finally cemented what we're wearing to eras so at least there's that. i've seen some things here and there but i'm not actively looking for things! so i've been semi-spoiled but not quite! i'm sorry about zayn :( i hope you have fun at wicked! i'm seeing it in november :) i'm also going to see back to the future in december! unfortunately, i'm going to miss kimberly akimbo while it's here in seattle because i'll be in california! but i'll be seeing waitress at the sf playhouse so a win is still a win :)
i'm currently reading intermezzo still — trying to finish part 1 by monday/buddy reading with a friend — but i also started reading razzle dazzle: the battle for broadway by michael riedel! emphasis on trying, because i haven't really felt like reading lately! but i'm going to carve out some time to sit down and read intermezzo tomorrow!
i haven't listened to the new katy perry album! i don't particularly care for her music so it is not very high on my priority list, but i did enjoy the last dua album! did you see the brat remix collab list? i'm most excited for the 1975 on i might say something stupid (definitely laughed at that one), sympathy is a knife ft. ariana grande, everything is romantic ft. caroline polachek, and i think about it all the time ft. bon iver! i have not seen the joker movies actually! but i did get a text from a friend being like "DID YOU KNOW this was a musical" in a very accusatory manner 😭 like yes, i personally know every single musical. and am responsible.
i'm so glad you have their music 🤍 and i will listen to soccer mommy soon, i promise! is there an album i should start with first, or should i just go in order of release date? i'm adding the violet hour to my list!! it's a real list that exists on notion! i've never been to six flags — what's your favorite ride? i haven't been editing much lately because i'm 80% sure i have carpal tunnel so i'm trying to take it easy (also haven't been crafting much for that same reason) : ( but i do have a few old drafts i might post eventually <33333 hope you're having a good week my friend! 🤍

lil thing where I'll give a bit too much detail so it fills its purpose, honoured honestly to be tagged by three of my favourite writers in this space @sharkodactyl, @unicyclehippo , and @astoriacolumnstaircase - anyone reading this should be reading their works instead.
favourite colour: brown(s), like a mid to a dark tone, i like them to have a bit of red involved. like our old-boy chet, I love the wood. my dream home would be all wood-panelled with built in inlayed and set back shelves and nooks a plenty and yeah just full of brik-a-brak. otherwise my favourite colours are navy blue and greens that are more mixed with blue than yellow, teals and emeralds and once again generally around the mid tones. green makes me very happy. moss and outdoors and all that.
currently reading: fic. haha. (suss my recommend reading tag) I did venture out to my (very) local queer bookshop and asked them for something that won't send me on a spiral if I'm already on one/provide some escapism and they reccomended river of teeth by Sarah gailey. anyone I've said about it to seems real enthusiastic about it, I am not well read at all when it comes to published things, tend to just get really into a few fandom authors works and picking them apart (rereading a lot) . still haven't started it but maybe I'll try take it out to the park in the next week or so. I'm dabbling in reading (and unfortunately writing) poetry thanks to @picturesofthegoneworlds and @blorbotomy 's influence, those mini books are fun to keep on you when out and about, poem or two on a tree stump or boulder with a grand vista and a brain that wants eyes on a phone screen.
last song: last song I consciously (not background music) listened to was:
youtube
I went on an early lord snow stint the other night because the air smelt crisp and there was a nice chill. they have remained my favourite heavy (as a broad term) band for a decade now.
I used to have music on all of the time, whether that be cd's at home or in my mp3 player (that I still take out with me) but these days I find listening more of an intentional activity and I prefer to have people just nattering when I'm at home and want background noise. think it's where my heads at and I've just got more sensitive to being overstimulated I guess. I was also pretty good at going to a live gig at least once a week before I did my back in, looking forward to getting into that habit again.
last series: I don't watch much stuff outside of critical role, least other than YouTube videos I'll put on whislt I'm drawing. oh wait yeah I ordered 3 seasons of xena on ebay because it's like a couple of quid a season and it is a real good comfort show and fucking amazing. I hadn't seen it since I was pre teen and it was on day time TV and I'd catch it on sick days. the amount of people I've brought it up to these past few months who've been so stoked to be reminded of it/eager to watch it with me is actually hilarious.
last movie: uhhhh God movies I watch even less. I haven't been to a cinema in over 12 years now, just not my thing, and it's funny caus my mum used to work in the film and TV industry and we had shelves and shelves full of VHS growing up (mostly bootlegged) and she can just ramble about pretty much any early era film up to the stuff from the 80s (when she was working on em) for days. never could sit through em, never felt satisfied with how the story went. guess that's why actual play appeals to me. but saying all this I did rewatch Bound for the first time since I was like 15 last month or so, enjoyed it a lot more than I did back then.
sweet/savory/spicy: savory all day. I am a salt fiend. I used to think I'd be fortunate enough to die from my salt intake. I'll put it on anything. cereal, toast, fruit. I think the other day I noted the one thing I wouldn't put it on, but I can't recall that right now honestly. it's gotta be decent salt too, sea salt or rock salt that has some texture and delicious flavour, I'm not fucking with that table salt shit. I carry salt with me in a mini mason jar everywhere I go, saves when you only have access to bland cold supermarket food. one of my earliest memories is when I was like 6 I had had my daily 1 glass allowance of squash/fruit cordial in my white Tom and Jerry printed beaker with the accordion bendy straw and so when I was pouring myself a glass of water from the tap I put salt in it caus I wanted flavour that would not show through the white translucent container. it's all been downhill from there, although I also, luckily I guess caus otherwise I would be really fucked, do drink a lot of water.
currently working on: myself and healing. hah. I never realised how much paperwork and phone calls came with this maintenance shit. I'm still out of work, and my mental health has taken a huge hit from not being able to do the things I usually would. so right now I'm just trying to keep everything together. I can draw again though, so sorry about that.
I never know who to tag in these things caus I don't think everyone wants to do them. so I'll go with this being open invite as always. hope anyone who read this far is having a good week, and sentiment is still there even if you didn't read this (unless you don't deserve my well wishes, then fuck you.)
