Idk how to introduce this pitch properly, but look at what I've gathered:
Abed - Sherlock
Troy - John
Annie - Mariana
I bet the Sherlock & Co. trio would watch Community on TV nights and I can imagine Troy and Abed listening to Sherlock & Co. and eventually getting Annie into it too for the bit because they want her to know she's their Mariana🧍
This developed from me thinking about how Troy and Abed would dress up as John and Sherlock for Halloween and today I got hit with the connection between Mariana and Annie
Although John is the more "media-reference-y" one, but Sherlock and Abed are both canonically autistic and the way their dynamics work here and also in some other situations/the way they work themselves makes more sense that way I think
(Is there an overlap of these fandoms? Please tell me there's an overlap of these fandoms)

If Pierce really lived it up when he was younger, then I have no choice but to think he was a little cool (but I hate him more than anything ever).

i feel like it would've made more sense for jeff to have become greendale's lawyer rather than becoming a teacher.
his whole reason to be at greendale was to become a lawyer again, so i'm a little confused why they decided he should be a teacher for greendale instead of becoming their lawyer and defending them in the marvin humphreys case (idk how spell his name). that'd set up a much more interesting new story for jeff, having him have to deal with whatever insane lawsuits greendale has. they could've utilised his being a lawyer much better than him being a teacher. as well as that, he's never shown any interest in teaching, actively insulting the people working at greendale throughout the show. and the argument that "oh he cares about greendale so he became a teacher", as if him literally stopping the school from being sued wouldn't be an even better way of showing that.
in conclusion, jeff shouldn't have been a teacher. the show was about a fake lawyer going to shitty school to become a lawyer again. so why not follow through? it would just make sense for him to do that, to support greendale at a more executive level. maybe that'll happen in the movie?

Headcanons: Starting Your Freshman Year at Greendale and Joining the Study Group
MASTERLIST | AO3 | KO-FI
Requested by: Anon
Headcanons for being a new freshman at Greendale and becoming a member of the study group?
Ohh sorry i didn’t clarify! it doesn’t matter to me, i just liked the idea of the reader kinda being the baby of the group, so maybe everyone is in their later years at greendale?
Relationship(s): The Study Group (Jeff, Britta, Annie, Troy, Abed, Shirley and Pierce) x gn!reader (platonic)
Warnings: References to underage drinking. (Let me know if I need to add any)
(A/N: I started writing this literal years ago, but I rewatched the Community Christmas episodes today and it’s made me want to rewatch all of Community and start writing for it again. Not enough people write for it, and not enough people write gender-neutral-reader fics. This was like 90% done so it was a good place to start again. I went with making it so the reader joins the Study Group during season 3, since I had the idea of using the reader to replace Todd in the episode where none of them want to work with him. I haven’t followed the canon of season 3 verbatim, since it’d have made writing this kinda difficult (plus I haven’t seen season 3 in years). So, this is more general. I’m hoping to work through my list of Community requests from years ago throughout 2024, since I’m hoping to get more into the habit of putting aside time for writing.)
Tumblr media
When you decided on taking Biology 101 during your first semester at Greendale, you were bound to learn of (and witness first hand) the notorious Study Group.
Your hope that you wouldn’t be roped into their borderline-narcissistic antics was killed when you were given Pierce Hawthorne as your lab partner.
To say he was annoyed would be an understatement.
Oh boy, did he make it known that he abhorred having to be your lab partner.
In fact, most of them seemed to hate the idea of being stuck as your partner, which was at least a little hurtful.
When Abed rearranged the lab partner pairings based on some mental computer wizardry, you got put with Jeff, who was a bit more subtle with his annoyance.
You spent most of that night standing there awkwardly while Shirley cried about being the least popular member of the Study Group, or trying to be some kind of mediator between these friends who you knew only from rumours and observing them.
You also had to rescue a turtle from being burned alive by Britta, which sent you over the edge into a fit of fury.
Annie was the one who apologised to you for everything, and, much to the chagrin of everyone else, invited you to join the study group.
Perhaps she didn’t expect you to take her up on the offer, but you did anyway.
Your first study session with them made them realise that you fit in well with the group.
Even Abed liked your presence, because he believed it ‘changed the status quo without being like when sitcoms add a kid character in a desperate attempt to boost the ratings’.
(He compared you to Frasier from Cheers)
For a while, though, you did feel a little isolated from the group, considering you were often the only one to comment negatively on the group’s questionable behaviour, which they saw as perfectly normal.
However, you adjusted to being in the group alarmingly fast, to the point of getting carried away in the Study Group mentality like the rest of them.
As the baby of the group, you were treated as such, despite being at least a bit more mature than Troy and Abed.
For example, if Jeff and Britta were in the middle of a heated discussion, you’d be told to ‘stay out of it’.
Abed, early on, would analyse you to figure out how exactly you fit into the group, such as deciding what archetype best describes you.
There’s also a chance that he would create and manipulate situations in order to test your personality.
Jeff would shut this down as soon as he figured out what Abed was doing.
In an effort to try and include you more, Annie would force each member of the Study Group to do an activity with you.
Annie invited you to a one-on-one study session.
(Also, if you’re taking any classes that she took in her first or second year, she’ll lend you her old materials, like notes, textbooks, study cards etc.)
Shirley took you to the mall with her and her kids, treating you like one of her own kids.
Troy and Abed introduced you to Inspector Spacetime, which you quickly became a big fan of.
(Watching it became a Saturday night ritual for the three of you)
Britta brought you along to a protest which ended in the both of you in jail.
(An irritated Jeff would have to come bail you both out, and Britta would beg him not to say anything about it to Shirley or Annie)
Pierce gave you $1000 to tell Annie that he’d taken you to the zoo.
Jeff invited you over to his apartment for beers, which resulted in you both getting wasted and having a tearful heart-to-heart with one another.
Despite adopting the Study Group mentality to a certain degree, you would be the least susceptible to the group’s dumbassery due to joining so late, which meant you’d often be the one to pull the group out of the stupid shit they were doing.
At the very least, you’d pull Jeff out of it, and he’d take the lead and sort out everyone else.
If you weren’t that close to your family, you’d probably spend holidays over at Shirley’s upon her insistence.
(I love love love the idea that she makes a custom Christmas stocking for you the first year you come over)
In a weird way, the Study Group became your family, albeit a dysfunctional one.
After your friends all graduated, you stayed in touch with most of them, even before you were reunited because of the Save Greendale Committee.
It’s safe to say that, even if you do join late, you’re still accepted as one of them, for better or for worse.

i feel like writing an essay on why jeffannie is a horrible ship
disclaimer before i rant: you are completely entitled to your opinion on whatever ships you prefer! this is just what i think :)
i'm going to begin with the most obvious problem with jeffannie: the age difference. at the start of the show, she's eighteen (a TEENAGER, guys) and he's in his thirties. they are at vastly different stages of life. he has way more life experience than her.
even if we ignore that, they just make no sense together. they already have that father/daughter dynamic, and the chemistry community reddit is constantly on about is nowhere to be found. all the kiss scenes felt forced (maybe not debate 109, but i'll talk about that later). also, jeff having two awesome women competing for his love, and then going after the teenager with a boyfriend...interesting.
i don't think jeff is necessarily predatory; he is very clearly not exclusively attracted to girls as young as annie, but that doesn't mean his attraction to her isn't at least slightly iffy.
i saw someone say annie and jeff, a recovering addict and someone who currently has an addiction, would not have a very healthy relationship in the long run, and i agree. as the original poster said, annie worked so hard to put her addiction behind her, and being with jeff wouldn't be good for her.
also, whoever made that tumblr post saying every jeffannie episode would work better with jeffbritta or abedison was 100% right, which is why i'm going to discuss the problems with each jeffannie episode.
jeffannie began in debate 109, when annie and jeff had to argue the point that man is inherently evil on the greendale debate team, and the debate ends in a scene where the leader of city college's team launches himself out of his wheelchair; jeff instinctively catches him, and the leader uses this to support the point that man is good. annie proceeds to grab jeff and kiss him, which makes him drop city college's leader, which wins them the debate, because 'he dropped him because he was horny!'
god.
obviously, you can see why that made me uncomfortable to watch, but i guess you could look past it in the comedy and chaos of it all. anyway, jeffbritta would have made that episode so much better. britta would definitely be on the debate team, and since she and jeff actually had a normal age gap, which would make everything far less creepy.
next, let's talk about the worst thing in the world:
pascal's triangle revisited.
actually, the episode was fine. i enjoyed it. but that kiss at the end makes me so angry. jeff, you have these two beautiful women who you have been pursuing this whole season, and you go and kiss the teenage girl. THE TEENAGE GIRL. jesus fucking christ. and she had a boyfriend too. you know what would have worked? abed convincing annie not to transfer instead. infinitely better chemistry, and an abedison kiss that actually impacted the plot would have changed my life.
the conspiracy episode was excellent, but jeffbritta would have made it perfect. i don't think it expanded on anything problematic jeffannie-wise though, so that's a win.
and then you have intro to political science. i haven't really seen anyone talk about this, and it's once again not a bad episode, but i really think the writers just didn't want britta to have a storyline that actually developed her character, because she would have devoured in annie's place during this episode. jeff's dynamic with her is already perfect, and it would make so much more sense for them to run against each other, as opposed to jeff and annie.
all those alternate timeline jeffannie scenes in remedial chaos theory already sucked, but i didn't care too much because i knew they weren't going to push it into anything too serious, but then you had annie tell jeff he reminded her of her father mid-makeout and it's just...wow. so the creators knew they had this very obvious father-daughter like relationship, were fully aware of it, and still forced the ship. cool.
now, don't kill me for this, but i'm one of those people who actually genuinely, really liked season 4. and one reason why i liked it was because the one major jeffannie scene they had was the imaginary alternate timeline one, which acknowledged that jeffannie would not be good together, and was hilarious. so thank you season 4, they can never make me hate you <3
introduction to teaching was also great because there was a plotline centered around jeff and annie that never tried to force any sort of awkward romantic chemistry (at least that's how i remember it), which seems impossible in community. honestly, this episode just proved that platonic jeffannie is superior to romantic jeffannie.
but that period of bliss where there was no romantic jeffannie didn't last long, because then you have g.i. jeff.
i love g.i. jeff. it's one of my favorite episodes, and was phenomenal for jeff's character. there was just one line, where animated coma dream jeff tells animated coma dream annie, 'look at the rack i gave you.' that was just kind of gross and didn't sit right, especially since a major plot point of this episode was jeff turning 40 and having a crisis. annie was *checks notes* 23-24 during this episode. the age gap is still very concerning here, and was made worse because of the fact that it really highlights how jeff is aging.
and then season 6 got so close to leaving jeffannie behind, forever, and then they had to ruin it with the series finale. i'm just saying, we couldn't have a platonic jeffannie goodbye like we got with jabed (speaking of which, the jabed goodbye arguably hurt more than the jeffannie one)?
anyway, i am desperately hoping we get jeffbritta/abedison (or trobed!) in the community movie, even though i know that's probably not going to happen, i do not like jeffannie at all, and thank you for reading my explosion of angry thoughts!

why troy & abed were doomed from the start
i'm back to say i've come back to community and i've been thinking a lot about the state of troy and abed's relationship through the seasons and why they work so well comedically but, somehow, the writers weren't able to sustain their friendship to the end. (not even talking about s5 here. the cracks started showing in s3.)
the obvious answer is that sitcoms tend to go down in quality over time, the characters becoming flanderised versions of themselves and losing who they are, but i can't really say that - barring the gas leak season - abed or troy lost who they were for the entirety of the time they were on the show together.
i think what doomed them from the start was that they were not only comedic partners in a sitcom, but best friends. there was a tangible realness that underscored all their actions, beyond the cheesy heightened melodrama of most sitcom relationships (platonic or otherwise) that audiences could recognise and wanted to see develop. so, develop they did.
but troy and abed both appear in the show at a very interesting point in their lives. every member of the main cast, of course, has major change in the trajectory of their lives at greendale, but troy and abed in particular come off several years of being a kind of half-person. troy spends most of his life playing into the character of the popular jock, someone who is still inside him throughout the series but becomes increasingly diminished, a voice in his ear rather than this all-consuming persona. abed is who his father wants him to be. he's never had any friends, spent most of his childhood bullied and most of his adulthood thus far pursuing his interests in a vacuum and inside his own mind, with no one to share them with. for lack of a better term, troy and abed come of age throughout the run of community. they figure out who they are as individuals.
and, frankly, as geothermal escapism put it best, it's impossible to figure out who you are on your own when you're being consumed by another person. i'm not saying that either one of them is guilty of this, but what started as a close but casual 'fling' of sorts between the two of them became increasingly intense to the point of overwhelm, and as they started moving away from their early-season caricatures and becoming complex and flawed and human, things between them naturally became more intense on a deeply emotional level. the writers recognised this. never crossing the line into romance, they had to express troy and abed's love for each other through every other method under the sun. we see them, in their own misguided and silly ways, sacrifice what they want for each other over and over again. until it's too much.
too much to believe? too much to handle?
troy and abed remind me of that very best friend you have as a queer kid. you're stepping out from your parents' or your siblings' shadows for the first time and here's this person to catch you. you love them more than words can say. then they're gone, because nothing so childish lasts, and you can't really explain why it meant what it did. the person they were, maybe, and who they were to you, but you also know that no one, no matter what they're like, will ever be this special again.
and so even though we can't cling onto those people, because we get older, we change, we grow up and we grow apart, it is really fucking hard to let go of the first person you've chosen to let into your life.
and because the community writers are fantastic at their jobs, we get to see that reality play out in front of our eyes.

thinking abt that one post where op was showing their s/o an old childhood picture taken of the little kid soccer team their father coached during a game years ago (the picture being from when op themself was a child) only for s/o to find out they they themself were there, in the picture background, on the opposite team, and this being a woah moment for both of them.
also thinking about the bluey ep fairytale (s3ep25 i believe? fairytale spoilers ahead btw) where bandit tells his kids a "real life fairytale" which includes what he claims is the first ever meeting (short as it is!) he has with chili (his wife) from when they were kids during a vacation at a camp site. thing is, chili doesnt remember it happening although she does say that her family vacationed there often and so timelines do match up, even if she has no recollection of it. so its left open-ended (popular fan theory suggests that the girl bandit met (he didnt get her name, it was a few seconds meeting where she returns his hat to him) was actually brandy, chili's older sister)
but god, im actually thinking about troy and abed now, and how abed wanted to find moments in the study group history where they could have interacted/did interact prior to greendale. and troy's iconic "you were out there somewhere and you weren't looking for me?" to the point where i now want to write a fic where ten year old troy goes, with his uncle and cousins, to a campsite for vacation (maybe troy's parents are there, maybe his nana is there, idk i havent thought it all out yet) only for troy to have a short meeting with an older 14 year old kid. its a small thing, its a big thing, its bandit being jinxed and unable to talk until this girl reads his name off his hat and gives it back to him before walking away. its nothing. its a kid troy wont ever see again probably. its everything, because he can talk now. its forgotten because hes ten and he has a lot of things to say now that he can.
he doesnt know this kids name, he doesnt remember this, and its not until troy has sailed away, and abed is going through some old scrapbooks in apartment 303 that troy brought with him when he first moved, and he's looking at a picture of ten year old troy, arms around his cousin, big wide smiles, at a campsite, only to find there, in the background, walking across the green to his father, is abed.
its gonna wrinkle troy's brain when he finds out

“But the rage passes and leaves no trace behind.” ― Rainer Maria Rilke, Sonnets to Orpheus
November 12, 1986
You'd developed a dislike for small towns.
Hawkins might still be home in some ways, but it was more because of the people who had lived there--the memories--than the town itself. But it, too, fell into the category of small towns that you'd grown to hate:
Small, unassuming places that held some kind of dark, terrible, dangerous secret. Atrocities in the making.
You'd walked into Hawkins fully oblivious to the monsters that lurked there, though.
Here and now, with Greendale, you were almost too aware.
Jinette had entirely too much to say about it and that unsettled you.
Strange energies and missing children and sudden turns of fortune for seemingly innocent townspeople. Rituals performed in the woods and a possible portal straight to hell.
"I'll knock on the door," you joked as you read through a report he'd provided about the Greendale Mines. "Maybe I'll get some kind of time off for good behavior if I hand Satan my soul in person, instead of waiting to die for him to take it."
Jinette ignored you; jokes were lost on the clergy.
Instead of a lecture though, he simply gave you a warning: to be on the lookout for witches.
"Thought the Order vowed not to discriminate against religions," you'd scoffed at him. He ignored you again and just sent you on your way.
The Order against discrimination? Sure. The Catholic Church? Definitely not. And Jinette? The most judgmental bastard of all.
Still, his warning was front and center as you felt an unnatural, chilling frequency of magic in the air upon your arrival in Greendale.
"Let's get this over with," you slammed the door shut and shouldered your backpack so you could start investigating.
Greendale was nice enough--it had that hazy, natural beauty of the late fall that was synonymous with upstate New York--and if you weren't in such a sour mood, you probably would've enjoyed it. This stage of your work was always somewhat fun. Talking to people and learning local histories, seeing different buildings as you walked around, eating a little lunch at some hole-in-the-wall off-the-beaten-path type of place.
But you were surrounded by ghosts. Both literal and figurative.
Someone died on that street corner, heart stopped cold as though someone had stuck a pin in it.
There was a bakery that had apricot kołaczkis; not Italian but still one of Nonna's favorites.
The dentists office used to belong to a serial killer who'd never been caught; the spirits of his victims rapped on the little window at street-level, begging to be let out even decades later.
Cerberus Books was a beacon for classic horror with neon lights and mannequins dressed as monsters in the windows...and Eddie would have loved it.
You fought the urge to flinch as you felt the phantom feeling of his hand in yours, his voice in your ear urging you to go inside and look around.
You closed your eyes and took several calming breaths to clear your mind. Little by little those ghosts were banished and you'd regained your cool, your focus.
If the Order wanted you to be a weapon, you would be one. You'd break whatever darkness lurked in Greendale and then onto the next job, and the next one, and the next one. Until you could go home. Your real home.
Then you wouldn't need to rely on ghosts anymore.
Or fear them.
Your world was knocked off its axis as someone exited Cerberus Books and crashed into you. Even moreso as a surge of unearthly, dark power clashed with your heavenly one, and you fought the urge to tap into that power to repel the intruding force away from you.
The man that crashed into you grabbed your shoulders to steady you before you fell, and you breathed in the smoke-and-brimstone tinged air that surrounded him. It was suffocating and further tapped into that instinct towards defensiveness.
But as you regained your bearing, all you could see was how unassuming he looked.
Truly, his visage belied that imposing aura--a kind older man in a suit and fedora, with neatly-trimmed facial hair, and a gentle smile--but you could sense that he was a witch, just as he sensed you were...
What were you?
He held you there for a moment and you watched as his brow quirked. He read you, just as you read him. A mutual discovery. Tenuous, so as not to alarm one another, but curious.
Although naturally adverse, you could sense no danger to each other.
"I'm so sorry," he apologized softly. "I wasn't looking where I was going."
"N-No, no," you insisted. "I was caught up in my head, it's my fault."
"You're...new to Greendale." he stated.
"Just driving through," you answered, an excuse that was well-used in the past few years. This time you had a feeling you meant it. "Maybe sticking around for a few days."
"The diner has a great cherry pie."
"Cherry's my boyfriend's favorite."
"Is he traveling with you?"
Yes.
It was on the tip of your tongue. Because yes, actually he was just here with you. The memory of him, the ghost of him. You wished he was, and maybe that was enough to make him real.
Maybe that was enough so this witch felt him.
"No," you said instead. "It's just me."
His gaze softened as you continued to study each other. You held out your hand to him.
"Anyway, I should get going," you told him and you held out your hand to shake. "Thank you for the recommendation, and sorry again Mr..."
"Spellman," he replied, hands letting go of your shoulders so he could shake yours, but his words were like a shot to your heart. "Edward Spellman."

Henry was an observer, a thinker, a visionary.
He took care of them, offered mercy when he wasn't required to. He simply demanded obedience in return for all that he provided for his children in the Upside Down.
But for some reason beyond understanding, chaos had broken out.
And he was livid.
Eddie stood tall and received the images that his master filtered through his mind; strange growths, riotous creatures, and the partial reformation of the beast that Henry himself gave life to: the Mindflayer.
All with a will of their own.
"You must fix this," Henry demanded of his right hand, his general. "You must restore order."
The efforts of the physical communication winded him, as he was still fragile and healing from the attack by Eleven's friends, so he continued to relay unspoken demands through the collective consciousness. He strained to spread his authority as far through the dimension as he could.
Destroy the malcontents or you shall be destroyed.
A warning not just for Eddie, but for any of the creatures that resided under his rule to reconsider their rebellion before they met their demise.
Then came a jarring mental image of a wasteland of bodies, torn apart but still writhing and alive. The pain that would come in the wake of any betrayal would be immense, and he would keep all of them alive for as long as he saw fit to extend their suffering.
No Gods or devils could enact the devastation he could, if only they tested him.
"Does that mean you too?" you sowed doubt inside of him. "The destruction? What would happen if you didn't listen?"
Eddie stiffened as he felt the tug of your presence at the corner of his mind, hidden in that deep, dark pit. A spark amidst the void. He growled, both in acceptance of Henry's orders and to silence you.
"Do you know what this reminds me of?" He fought the urge to twitch under Henry's all-knowing gaze as you continued. "The Emperor. And Vader. Do you remember Return of the Jedi?"
His mind was a flurry of images again, these vague and distant though, twining with the ones that Henry had just relayed to him: spaceships and planets and furry little creatures, and Vader towering over Luke--
"Do you question me?" Henry snapped at him, gnarled body shaking with the effort. Eddie's eyes focused on his master once more. "Beast?"
He ducked his head and growled again. Grumbled. Repentant in his errors.
"Question him," you hissed, emboldened to no longer stay buried and hidden in the pit but slithering along his skin. Unseen, but acutely felt. "Do it. What's happening? Why are they rebelling? Ask him."
He let the growl turn into a roar, a battle cry and a warning to keep you silent. He then took to the air, determined to succeed in snuffing out this insurgent blight that had taken root in the Upside Down.
His master needed him, relied on him.
He wouldn't fail.
No matter how much you tempted him to.

To find witches, one often had to think like a witch.
Though the term witch when it came to those who practiced magic was just as broad as the term Abrahamic when it came to some of the so-called “major” religions of the world. One of your fellow Knights considered themselves a witch, more of a polytheist with an affinity for Hecate, but they derived their abilities from nature.
Technically you did too, your powers rooted as deep within the earth as they were tied to the Heavens.
Maybe it was all the same? Or maybe it was all bullshit.
The type of witch that you were looking for though, the type that Edward Spellman was, was something else. Dark rituals, blood curses, deals with demons, names signed in books, machinations with The Devil himself.
“Arthur Miller was popping a boner somewhere right now,” you muttered.
You supposed it felt a little unsettling, but less in a way that made you fearful, and more in the way that oil floated on water. Similar, both liquids, just...not meant to mix.
Which is why you kept yourself calm and open minded.
"I'm not here to kill them," you reminded yourself. "Find out why innocents are disappearing...stop them, maybe...but they'll carry on unharmed."
Truly, you could have just followed Edward Spellman as he went about his business in town, but you figured that that would have probably been as suspicious and rude as you could get.
That's why you enacted your own sort of a tracking spell.
Witches didn't always move in the world like mortals did; they transmuted, teleported, moved along the shadows cast by clouds and trees and blades of grass.
But if you reached out…asked the clouds and trees and grass to show you what they’d seen? Well, then it would be impossible for them to stay hidden.
So you walked.
Left your car at the motel and set foot into the lush forests surrounding Greendale, letting instinct guide you.
The further away from town you got, the more unruly your surroundings became, until you ended up following an old, overgrown set of railroad tracks deeper into the wilderness. Bats or birds--you couldn't quite tell--flew overhead; omens of some sort urging you to give up and go back to safety.
"How bad could it be?" you asked aloud, only to skid to a halt as something larger and shadowy crossed your path ahead.
Once again, you couldn't make out what it was, but the energy it left behind felt dangerous and smokey, an ephemeral stain of dark magic.
You took a calming breath and clenched your fists, ready for whatever you might find, and soldiered on.
Eventually, the treeline thinned, and power lines sprung up along the track, and then a structure. Large, looming, and made of stone and glass; it was overgrown with dead ivy and surrounded by tall, dry grasses.
Gehenna Station.
You scoffed at the name, at the implication, but the longer you observed the structure, the more you felt the underlying darkness that churned within. In fact, the longer you stared, the less sure you seemed to feel of the building's existence itself. Your eyes started to lose focus of the structure; your perception wavered, almost like it didn't want you to know that it was there.
Maybe it wasn't even there at all?
"Good afternoon Miss."
You whirled on your heel, ready to defend yourself, only to find a young boy standing there. His eyes were large, cheeks round and soft, and there was a small smile on his lips; kindness and innocence emanated from him, but also a deep sadness.
It didn't take long for you to realize that he was dead.
"You don't belong here," he stated matter-of-factly. "You should go."
"I'm here to help," you told him instead. There was no duplicity when it came to ghosts; they could see through you, no pun intended. "Kids are dying. Kids like you. Can you tell me what happened? I can try to stop it and find you some peace."
His brow furrowed, and he pouted.
Then he held his hand out to you, palm upwards for you to lay your own hand in his small grasp. You hesitated for a moment, but gave in.
He was solid and your hand didn't sink through his form like you expected. But as your palms touched, you saw.
A dank cell illuminated by the moonlight with sights that would drive one insane.
A desolate forest full of dead trees and a clawed beast that slunk unseen.
And a looming tree laden with thirteen rotten apples and a swinging noose.
The Harrowing. And it truly was as it's name described, as you watched one child after another succumb to the trials.
You blinked and the images were gone, but the sound of screaming still rang in your ears.
"It's always been this way, Miss," the boy said sadly as he pulled his hand away again. "You can't help us. No one can."
Something burned in your chest at his words, the finality of it, the acceptance of this fate. How many times had you heard that from your father or Jinette or the other Knights? This is the way it always would be. Cycles. Downward spirals.
You'd already decided that that would end with you.
This would too.
"The hell I can't."
You let go of the boy's hand, turned back towards Gehenna Station, and started walking.
Every step felt heavier and heavier, but you proceeded onwards until the doors of the building opened of their own volition and then slammed shut behind you once you were inside.

Eddie soared over the vast landscape of the Upside Down alone.
He had gotten used to flying with legions of bats at his sides, wings beating in tandem. It was a euphoric experience to be with them. Be one with them. To dip and roll, swarm, and even play.
He tried calling out to them through the bond—
Help me, the master demands your cooperation, your obedience.
—but there was no response. Not even a reluctant one.
It was irritating. He was leader after Henry, for all intents and purposes. Even their friend in some cases, their own flesh and blood.
Why wouldn't they come at his call?
He could feel them. Some waiting in the trees, cowering. Some were tempted to fly with him, soar with him, safe with him in the lead.
But there was something in the air that stopped them from answering the call.
A strange sense of foreboding, a shift in the presence of the dimension itself. A change in frequency, in the fragile balance of control that Henry had over everything.
Even the particles floating around him didn’t seem right.
“Are you sure he’s in control?” you whispered deep within him. “Are you sure Vecna is telling you the truth?”
Of course, you were still there clinging to the edges of the pit inside of him, snatching at his thoughts like the parasite you were.
He curled his lip and growled at you again, willing you to be silent. But you simply refused. Whispering worries and warnings.
It was curious how your tone had changed. You seemed weaker here. Unsure. In contrast to how you’d been earlier in his master’s presence. There was a tenuous quality to you now.
He had considered, more than once, that you were some machination of Henry’s. To weed out the disloyalty in him. A little remnant of his humanity to taunt him and tempt him. A test.
But even with unhindered access to Eddie’s mind, there were simply things Henry couldn’t be bothered with. Memory, emotion, humanity. Those were all things he sought to destroy when he created the perfect weapon.
All of the things that you tried to bring out of him.
“Be careful,” were the final words slithering from you before you went silent once again.
He scoffed despite the pang in the hollow space where his heart should be.
Careful.
That was another indicator that you couldn’t possibly be of Henry’s design.
Careful wasn’t in his nature anymore.
Had it ever been, though? Even when he was alive, even when he was truly Eddie Munson, had he ever been cautious or careful? If he had been, he wouldn’t have brought Chrissy Cunningham to his trailer that fateful night.
Then he wouldn’t have shed that fragile body and become something greater.
This was fate.
He could feel you scoff at the thought now, and he grinned ferally, hoping his great and dark destiny would keep you quiet.
His wings beat harder, propelled him faster, motivated by the thought of some peace and quiet from you. At the prospect of being his master’s great weapon and champion.
He preened so hard, he didn’t realize how human the action actually was.
Until he crossed some seemingly invisible threshold, some metaphorical membrane made up of static electricity, that made everything go quiet.
The constant buzz of the hive mind was suddenly gone, thousands of consciousnesses silent, and his body seized momentarily as he reacted to the tangible loss.
Everything felt harder to do--breathing, thinking, feeling--and he went into freefall.
Down he went. Falling and flailing, air whipping about him. If he thought flying had been a freeing feeling, falling was another kind of freedom; something deep down and dark inside of him welcomed it, the prospect of a hard and fast demise.
But as his eyes drooped closed, the phantom feeling of your hands grasped at him, encircled his torso and willed him to take flight once more. Your phantasmic voice sounded underwater to his uncooperative ears, to his non-existent soul, as you screamed for him.
“Eddie!” His name brought him back into focus as hands grasped his face. Your invisible touch was electric and abruptly brought the world back into focus. “Eddie, wake up!”
He gasped a breath as your spark kickstarted his reflexes, but it was simply too late. He crashed heavily into the ground, barreling through the earth, until he came to a halt.
His body, unbreakable, seemingly bent with the impact. His ears rang, he couldn’t move, couldn’t think.
There was a distinct absence of being.
An absence of everything.
But he swore, before he lost himself, he saw the impossible.
He saw your face.

November 14, 1986
The inside of Gehenna Station was exactly what you expected.
That is to say, it was nothing that you expected; you had expected the unexpected.
If you reached out with your consciousness, you felt...a vast infinity. Halls that led everywhere, rooms of an unimaginable quantity. No wonder the outside of the building felt as if it wasn't there, because it really wasn't. This pocket reality was folded inside of it.
And what this pocket reality was, was a school.
A suspiciously empty school.
There were empty classrooms and hallways, an auditorium with a slide projector showing a list of incantations on a screen at the front, a cafeteria with trays of abandoned lunches.
You explored and searched--looking for someone, anyone--until you found yourself back in the main atrium, before a statue of a man with a goat's head and lower body, winged, with two fingers pointed up and two pointing down, surrounded by statues of children.
Baphomet.
"Interesting," you muttered as you encircled it.
You'd think a place like this, a place of satanic witches, would have some kind of idolatry towards Satan himself. Traditional depictions of devils and demons, maybe even some kind of artistic imagery of the archangel Lucifer?
Not this.
Your thoughts raced.
Hadn't you just contemplated your fellow Knights and their differences of beliefs outside? Yes. And that was where the mystery of this school and these witches remained. Everything had meaning; imagery like this had meaning, words had meaning.
Gehenna had ties to Hell and eternal suffering, places of divine punishment, and yet this was a school. A place for children to learn and grow. And Baphomet? People often mistook it for something sinister but Baphomet symbolized balance, the equilibrium of opposites; as above, so below and all that. Equal light and darkness inside everyone and everything. Peace at finding a balance with it. Equality in all and for all.
How could a statue that depicted children, trusting and reverent, stand for an institution that killed kids?
You supposed that the contradictions found here were akin to those in your own beliefs; how the church was supposed to be merciful, but you only found wickedness--like Jinette...like yourself--tied to it. That's how you were in this mess in the first place; someone using God as a justification to kill and steal.
"Guess all religions are shit," you snorted.
That's why you needed to find out what was actually happening here and stop it.
Unfortunately, in your rumination, you'd let your guard down.
You felt it before you saw it, the slide of your sneaker on the uneven floor. When you looked down to investigate, the tiles--made to look like a thousand eyes--began to fall away right under you.
The last thing you did before the floor beneath you disappeared and you fell into some dark oblivion wasn't an attempt to save yourself or find something to hang onto.
Instead you snorted and thought:
Guess the whole thing about being delivered right to Satan wasn't such a joke after all.

i think maybe one of the reasons i don’t really watch s6 id that im afraid im not abed-nadir autistic: loveable, confident, pop-culture obsessed and part of the found family despite his quirks and eccentricities. sometimes i feel more like frankie-dart autistic… perceived as a cold, detached outsider who never really feels like a true member of the group
honestly i see a lot of myself in frankie, she’s just trying to help greendale in her way of understanding the world which can be very black-and-white. she doesn’t see the point of all the magic that makes greendale what it is because she doesn’t feel like a part of it. we as the audience go in expecting to dislike her, because she symbolizes the change we’re not ready to deal with. they see her as sucking the life out of greendale which im sure is really disheartening to someone who just wants to be loved like everybody else. and it’s kind of heartbreaking to me that frankie never really finds that sense of belonging that made the rest of the group feel unconditionally accepted at greendale

Hiiii I have a community question I wanted to ask!!
Abed mentions all sorts of movies and tv shows through out Community, but I just wanted to know if maybe you have like a list of which ones are real and which ones he seemed to like more than others.
I can only think of the dark knight because of the dvd Annie broke, and the Star Wars movies (except he apparently hates the prequels) and cougar town!
great question! sorry for the delay on a response.
so, he mentions/references an insane number of movies and tv shows throughout the series, and I unfortunately do not have a list of every single one. although, I am (VERY slowly) working on an in-depth episode-by-episode analysis of the entire series, and listing every pop culture reference is a subsection in that. but that's not helpful right now. moving on
I don't have the picture, but there's this questionnaire abed filled out (outside of the show, it must have been uploaded to a website as promotional material for the show). he says his favorite movie is a tie between:
ghostbusters (1984, comedy/horror)
an american werewolf in london (1981, horror)
back to the future (1985, sci-fi/comedy)
blade runner (1982, sci-fi/action)
stand by me (1986, adventure/comedy)
stripes (1981, comedy/war)
star wars (1977, sci-fi/fantasy, also called "a new hope")
star wars: the empire strikes back (1980, sci-fi/fantasy)
star wars: the return of the jedi (1983, sci-fi/fantasy)
ferris bueller's day off (1986, comedy/drama)
jaws (1975, thriller/adventure)
raising arizona (1987, comedy/crime)
jurassic park (1993, adventure/sci-fi)
seven (1995, crime/mystery)
the matrix (1999, action/sci-fi)
the goonies (1985, adventure/comedy)
the breakfast club (1985, comedy/romance)
real genius (1985, comedy/sci-fi)
better off dead (1985, comedy/romance)
the fog of war (2003, documentary/war)
pulp fiction (1994, crime/thriller)
(btw if anyone knows what I’m talking about and has the screenshot please rb with it! I cannot for the life of me find it lmao)
I believe this is a list he apparently made in 2009, either in the first few weeks of school or right before the school year started. so it's possible he would answer differently as the series progressed. also, I do take some of these extra-canon things with a grain of salt, as on the same form he said his favorite place on campus was study room D or something, when obviously they definitely meant to write study room F. so, the credibility of my source for this information isn't exactly rock-solid. although, he does mention a lot of these movies on screen, and expresses love for many of them (the most notable ones probably being star wars episodes IV-VI, the breakfast club, and pulp fiction)
as you can see from the list, abed particularly loves american movies from the 80's. just a trend I thought I’d point out.
here's a few others he mentions loving, or just pretty notably references:
the dark night (2008, action/crime, as you mentioned)
rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (1964, musical/animated, is the whole basis of 2x11 abed's uncontrollable christmas)
the shawshank redemption (1994, horror/crime, is the basis for his plot with troy, annie, and shirley in 4x05 cooperative escapism in familial relations)
freaky friday (I believe it's the original one from 1976 specifically, but it's been remade a bunch. comedy/fantasy. it's the basis of abed and troy's story in 4x11 basic human anatomy)
rambo/first blood (series starting in 1982, action/thriller. abed talks about how messy the progressive series titles are in 3x14 pillows and blankets)
ocean's eleven (2001, crime/thriller, the basis for the heist scene from 3x21 the first chang dynasty)
hearts of darkness (1991, documentary/war, abed mentions it while pointedly filming dean pelton's production of his greendale commercial rather than helping with the commercial itself. similarly, hearts of darkness filmed the making of apocalypse now)
apocalypse now (1979, war/action, see the above explanation)
die hard (series starting in 1988, action/thriller, abed mentions wanting to do a die hard homage for christmas multiple times throughout season 4)
good will hunting (1997, thriller/romance, troy and abed's story in 1x24 english as a second language is filled with references to this movie. abed is doing homages on purpose, troy is not)
my dinner with andre (1981, comedy/drama, abed does a very elaborate homage at jeff's accidental expense in 2x19 critical film studies)
indiana jones (raiders of the lost ark, temple of doom, and the last cruscade only. he mentions loving the first three indiana jones movies in 1x04 social psychology)
aliens (1986, action/adventure/sci-fi, he and troy dress up as an alien and ripley in 2x06 epidemiology) (side note, I believe they're specifically referencing aliens, which is a sequel to alien. could be wrong though)
blade (1998, horror/action, they watch it over the course of 3x15 origins of vampire mythology after troy and abed assert multiple times that it is an amazing movie)
I think he generally talks about movies more than he talks about tv shows, but he does mention quite a few of them. some notable mentions are:
friends (1994, sitcom, mentions at least twice)
m*a*s*h (1972, sitcom, mentions in passing in 1x05 advanced criminal law, and references throughout 1x13 investigative journalism)
the cape (2011, action, mentions throughout 4x13 advanced introduction to finality)
who's the boss (1984, sitcom, is the premise of his whole storyline in 2x20 competitive wine tasting)
LOST (2004, sci-fi, mentions at least twice)
obviously there are a LOT more, but I just tried to list some of the most important ones, plot-wise and for understanding of his character. hopefully I’ll be able to get back to everyone with a super long list of every tv show and movie he ever mentions lmao, but that'll take a while. (there are lists online that say they list every movie and tv show abed has ever mentioned, but ngl I don't 100% trust those, so I’ll make my own lmao. but I put the link to one of them if you're curious. here's another one too)
at this point anyone who has seen community knows there are some really really big ones that I haven’t mentioned yet. pieces of media that are INTEGRAL to abed as a character. I was saving them for last lmfao. they are:
kickpuncher
inspector spacetime
cougar town
if I had to pick a holy trinity of media for abed, it would be these three things. these are EASILY the things he talks about the most, which is interesting, as both the kickpuncher movie franchise and the inspector spacetime series are completely fictional, and only exist in the community universe. (this is probably so they can show abed actually watching some of the shows/movies he talks about, without the obvious copyright issues that come with playing clips from an already existing movie/tv show on your screen. they kind of do that with blade in 3x15, but they only play vague fighting sounds, and never show their tv on our screen. anyway. not relevant.) to answer one of your questions from the ask, I believe those two are the ONLY fictional pieces of media abed talks about. as far as I know, everything else he mentions is real, including cougar town.
kickpuncher is obviously reminiscent of sci-fi/action films from the 80's, like robocop. like I said earlier, taking their place so that they could have a more substantial role in abed's on-screen life without any copywrite worries. it's a whole franchise, so there are multiple movies: kickpuncher, kickpuncher 2: codename: punchkicker, kickpuncher 3: the final kickening, kickpuncher: detroit, kickpuncher: miami (?), and kicksplasher (?). kicksplasher is apparently shown as a poster on abed's wall, and I’m assuming it's from the same franchise, although that could be wrong. the point is there's a very elaborate universe for kickpuncher, and it's a big part of abed's, and later troy's, film taste. the first time they mention it is in 1x15 romantic expressionism, when abed, troy, shirley, pierce, and chang all get together in abed's dorm room to make fun of stupid movies together. it's funny that it was introduced as a stupid movie to watch ironically, then troy and abed both end up genuinely loving it lmao. classic
inspector spacetime is obviously reminiscent of doctor who. they're both british sci-fi series that have been running for decades. doctor who uses a police box to travel the multiverse, while doctor who uses a telephone box. doctor who has malicious daleks who chant "exterminate," while inspector spacetime has blorgons who shout "eradicate." the concepts of the shows are obviously the same, with the actor for the doctor changing every season, etc etc. they're essentially the same exact show, but, like I said before, changed slightly so they can world-build without getting copywrited. there is something a little bit silly about this, though. it's definitely a continuity error and it's up to everyone whether they want to accept it as canon or not, I guess, but there's an episode where abed is actually wearing a doctor who t-shirt. (it also references bill and ted, but the doctor who part is what's relevant.) here's some pictures:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
awesome shirt tbh, but it is a little bit funny that is essentially makes it true that doctor who and inspector spacetime both exist in the community universe. and, these pictures are from the cold open of 4x11 basic human anatomy, which is way after inspector spacetime is introduced to the show (3x01 biology 101). so, is inspector spacetime just a rip-off of doctor who? is abed a fan of both shows? if he is, clearly he likes inspector spacetime better. anyway. I would guess that this wasn't intentional. but that is definitely a tardis on that shirt. maybe it's just a classic season 4 continuity mistake. oh well. I guess that's just how the cookie crumbles. anyway.
cougar town time! yes, it's a real show. I didn't think it was but it is. what's not real is cougarton abbey, the short-lived british remake that britta gets abed into in 3x01 biology 101. but yeah. it has 6 seasons and is streaming on hulu, if you're interested. I’ve heard it's not good but who knows for sure. something cool about cougar town is that abed is actually in an episode. let me be clear: not danny pudi. ABED. it's similar to the story abed tells about being invited to the cougar town set and shitting his pants while having an existential crisis about the layers of reality. here is a youtube clip of the scene. I found out about it while stalking danny pudi's wikipedia page months ago, you know, a typical sunday afternoon activity, and I saw a cougar town credit on there. I didn't even know it was a real show at that point so you can imagine my surprise lmao. anyway. idk if you knew that already but it's one of my favorite community easter eggs. so funny.
okay! I hope this is enough information to suit your needs, and I am once again opening the floor to anyone who wants to add anything 💯 this was fun, thanks for the ask, and stay fresh everyone ✌️
