(IMPORTANT NOTE: I REFER TO CHARACTERS BY THEIR ACTUAL NAMES IF I DON'T HAVE A NAME FOR THEM YET, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT I'M NAMING ANYONE NYA OR WYLDFYRE OR ANY OF THAT!!!)

OK !!! So the details are very messy cuz I just came up with this idea last night while drawing my guy the Nightmare King from Dreamzzz... Basically it's this super self-indulgent story where I just mix shit from Dreamzzz/Ninjago/LMK/Chima for the fucken sake of it!!!

In this story, the main characters are a Kai ripoff, Nya ripoff, and a Wyldfyre ripoff!!! Wyldfyre ripoff is Kai's youngest sister (Kai 22, Nya 20, Wyldfyre 8-10, probably 10), and she also has a pet dragon who she found years ago (knockoff Heatwave!!!)

For elemental powers, those are like these magical crystals called Elemental Cores, which you are blessed with (idk how yet) by ancient dragon lords (they all go by kings but they're not all men.) Kai has his Core somehow, and same for Nya! Unfortunately, Wyldfyre doesn't yet, either due to being too young or not proven herself yet! She doesn't let it bum her out too much because her epic dragon can grant her sort of temporary Core powers (kinda like Chi from Chima). Unbeknownst to them there's a special reason Wyldfyre and the others can accept powerups like this without detrimental side effects (I won't tell.)

The story goes something like this, a few years ago (probably between 3-5) Kai's parents and uncles (in this story Wu and Garmadon are his uncles) mysteriously go missing, and in present day he hears rumors of an ancient dragon king (Overlord) whose darkness has slowly been festering and increasing greatly. Initially, Kai doesn't care, "Surely if this nonsense were to be true, the great Dragon Knights (he doesn't know it, but they're his dad and uncles) will find out about and stop it!" Idk WHY he decides to go yet, but he takes Nya and the dragon, and leaves Wyldfyre with the others... but she does her own thing and follows. It's too late to turn back now, so reluctantly, Kai has to keep his baby sister out of trouble!

For characters, I'm not too sure how many I'm taking from which series' yet...

I know I have Kai, Nya, Wyldfyre, a Lloyd/Arin combo possibly, Jay, Ray, Maya, Wu, Garmadon, the Overlord, and Misako. I'm ALSO taking Lord Ras for self-indulgence reasons, and renaming naming him Korros (for fun and maybe Wu/Korros exes yaoi!) I also know I wanna get some Monkie Kid inspiration, so I'm thinking of the Lady Bone Demon, but crossed with fanon interpretations of the Preeminent as well! Also, again self-indulgence, Nightmare King from Dreamzzz, and also totally Cinder come the fuck on I need Cinder.

I dunno if I'll add Zane or Cole tho... part of me wants to do a Kalmaar knockoff just for one hyperspecific joke of like, Korros is taking forever to find some hidden mechanism in a wall, and Kalmaar goes "you know, i wouldnt have killed my father if i knew what followed would be so boring."

I have many other thoughts brewing in my brain but WHEW thats the gist of it.

Do you have any recommendations for character modeling in blender?

Ooh boy I never know how to respond to questions like that, but I'm gonna try my best and list some stuff which helped me personally, so hopefully this will be helpful to you guys too.

A lot of what im gonna say is probably gonna sound really generic but generally speaking just watching one tutorial series and calling it a day isn't gonna cut it.

Something that helped me a whole lot was having a clear goal in mind (like I remember the first thing I wanted to do was translate my OCs in 3D). Picking something I was invested in is what pushed me to do my own research (and now its Deltarune fan animations lol). Knowing how to maintain motivation and going in with the right mindset is the most important thing imo.

I use Blender for my 3D work, which is free and open source. I personally prefer it over paid software like Maya or 3dsMax, especially for modeling and sculpting (I remember I had to use Max and Maya for a while but overall it was a pretty agonizing experience to be honest, so I switched back to Blender, which just feels a whole lot easier to use for me personally lol, but really at the end of the day just pick the software you want. This is just my personal preference). If you have a potato laptop like me, I definitely advise you to use Blender tho as it is very lightweight compared to other 3D programs, plus it can do the same things and then some. Not to mention there are way more free resources on Blender stuff so it's easier to get access to the info you need. Anyways Blender-simping over, moving on!

Tutorials are always a great idea, but you're also gonna have to learn how to do problem-solving. 3D can be a really technical and rigid medium, so being patient and knowing how to do independent learning is very important. Take a look at box-modeling, sculpting, texturing and procedural shading. Unfortunately that's gonna involve a lot of annoying situations and moments of immeasurable pain, but once you're more familiar with how things work, it's super fun and rewarding!

Don't forget to have fun and experiment! It's easy to get lost and overwhelmed by the technical aspects of 3D but it's important to just let go and make silly things. Also talking to other 3d artists with similar interests helps a ton, especially more experienced ones but I am aware not everyone has access to that (plus not everyone might want that, esp when you're an introvert like me haha!)

If you gotta sell your soul to a corporation then focusing on one particular subset is gonna be useful for animation jobs, as this is what most studios want. Some artists might like specializing into just one area, and that's totally fine but for me who prefers to be a generalist, it just kinda ruins my joy for 3D to restrict myself to just one part of it. Plus if you enjoy doing what you do, you tend to learn a lot faster anyway.

This might be a bit of an uncommon take, but one of the most stifling pieces of advice I have received from industry 3D artists is to only focus on one thing (as in, only skill up your UV-unwrapping, or only do rigging, only do hard-surface modeling, only do organic environment modeling and so on). NUH-UH! Just do what you want fam. Make the spoingle-boingles pet cats. Focus on the things you like. Make barney the dinosaur destroy the whole set. Model, rig and animate them if you want. Really, just have fun. Obviously you gotta do some self-checks and see where you need to improve, and where your strengths and weaknesses are, and focusing on those areas can be very helpful. Just make sure you're having a good time doing it, and don't be too harsh on yourself. Definitely take a break if you're overwhelmed.

You don't have to be able to draw to be good at character modeling but making turnaround sketches helps me a whole lot whenever I make 3D characters. Knowing how to draw will also benefit your sense of design and shapes, as you can use your drawing skills for texturing and adding your own flair to your models.

Another thing I would do is look at other people's 3D models and study the topology and the way they model things. This also helps a lot with motivation. Obviously you don't wanna copy, just study the way other people model things and see what other talented artists come up with! There are a bunch of free Blender rigs you can download and study on your own, not to mention useful videos and streams on YouTube. The Rain and Snow rigs are pretty awesome. Some of this stuff is behind a paywall but I recommend checking out the free resources of the "Settlers" project for highly cartoony modeling and rigging (this playlist is very useful, I didn't watch all of it but some parts have been pretty inspirational to me). Also just following 3D artists you like and looking at their art for inspiration will help you stay motivated.

Notes of interest: Did not expect seeing such odd variety in coatimundi skull research especially when it came to length and tooth protrusion! Characters: Hyden and Alex @chocodile, Theo @kwillow  Rambling prose context read below!:

Main gist:  (keep in mind this is all limited to whats revealed so far about the shadow in main amaranthine verse so AU fun otherwise)

Group research expedition into some far off location with the hope of some leads into combating/eradicating The Shadow goop problem plaguing the world, courtesy of Hyden (most likely due to credible reports of it behaving uncharacteristically in one particular area and amassing consistently there over the years despite complete lack of population density that it would normally be voraciously seeking out to feed on). This eventually leads to the group winding up somewhere far underground (we’re talking Atlantis: The Lost Empire movie level montages of occasional dynamite use to unblock passages and paths that were assumed nonexistent until closer inspection). Until the expedition finally reaches a very well-sealed chamber (magically and physically) they decide to forcefully open and it appears to be much like an ancient tomb complete with decorations and murals.Obligatory cautious and eerie exploratory sequence that obviously leads into a raised focal point of the room, a stone-carved container structure complete w/ heavy stone well cap. Cue The Shadow goop absolutely bum-rushing into that chamber in overwhelming mass to the horror and subsequent confusion of the group, as its’ singular point of interest is breaching the stone-carved container.

Surprise! As everyone there already assumed, It’s a coffin! Bigger surprise!! Hey, wow, that’s weird The Shadow kind of looks like it’s reanimating whatever remains were in there!! Hello Tulum! :•)  asjdlkasjda oof thanks to a thumb adjacent hotkey on my mouse I lost about 3 pages worth of writing here I did in explanation regarding Tulum, her situation, and why her circumstances probably aren’t technically a case of Necromancy among other detail oriented things I can’t be bothered to redo from scratch again right now. LMAO  If you’re curious uh  feel free to reach out or reply asking more about those details;;

tldr bad short read: Mega specific series of contractual magic spells by an ancient eldritch deity tied for use with a specific individual’s (Tulum) base DNA for stupidly rapid controlled cellular regeneration/tissue growth/grafting/healing etc without repercussions of rejection or body shock. Caveat is that it only works when there is immediate proximity to biologically appropriate building block material to be used to make flesh. (ie, people fodder or the shadow sure sucked up a surplus of donor folk parts that would work for that sort of thing, huh? )

But that doesn’t account for the concept of the soul necessary in the body (soul in this context = consciousness, collection of individual’s stacked memories/experiences, basically all the pivotal formation points that made that person themself)

So before all that fun biology specific magic, this ancient eldritch being involved with Tulum first and foremost has a not really repeatable by anyone but themself magic involved in the ownership and perpetuity of Tulum’s “”soul/spirit”” via power of what dominion they have.

While Tulum is a character inspired by a combination of various Mayan civilizations of differing locations, timelines, and beliefs; The paired OC with her I keep referring to as the eldritch being/deity is a reflection of that who is inspired by Maya Mythology, rituals, and deities (particularly The Descending or Diving God)

I just haven’t fleshed him out too well yet beyond some basics as I’m still mulling over how they get on with one another;; but there’s, definitely some good messed up romance build there i keep knee jerking back to.

Sad thoughts

Maya using drawings to express her feelings. So one time she makes one that’s particularly emotionally loaded, let’s say it’s about her feeling trapped, maybe channeling her feelings from when she was in the orphanage. And she goes to show her moms and they just cry. Not like full on sobbing but like a little tear escaping🤏. Just because that drawing represents a feeling they know all too well and that Image says more than a million words ever could.

Would she show it tho? I feel like she'd maybe accidentally leave it out on her desk and they go to put her laundry away or they want to close her window bc it's raining outside, and thet stumble upon it. And Kat just needs to sit down for a while. Because the thought of her daughter experiencing the same feelings as she did breaks her heart.

They won't confront her about it bc they know she'll come to them if it gets too bad, but they make sure to clear their schedules that weekend for a fun family trip to the theme park

doing a oneshot for them would definitely be fun purely to get maya's pov, actually! in some ways, i think she has the highest walls of any character in the series--so much so that i only figured out in the last couple of parts what her problem is 😅

she's definitely been hurt before (my feeling is that it happened multiple times), and i think she's jaded to the point that part of jungkook's draw for her is that he's predictable and therefore safe in the sense that she thinks she knows what to expect. kind of a "he can't hurt me if i don't let him" mentality which is why she deliberately keeps him at arms length and occasionally lashes out. it definitely isn't right on her part (and hence why tae told her as much in part 5) and is why i think if they were to be endgame, it would take a LOT of growth and learning to communicate!

i 100% agree that every character should find happiness in some way, shape, or form (except jace, screw that guy), and i definitely plan on exploring that more even once the main series is done!! thank you for sharing your thoughts! <33

CGI - Week 10

This week was when we learnt how to texture. I've been looking forward to this class as I feel that this is where the character will really come to life. I haven't used Adobe Substance Painter before, so it definitely felt unfamiliar at the start and struggled with it at first. However, I liked the concept of the software, and how you can paint directly on the model rather than painting on the UV template (which I find can be quite confusing depending on the layout of the map).

At first, I felt it was taking a lot of time just to get the base colours in, and I knew there was an easier way, I just couldn't figure it out. It turns out, I needed to create lamberts in Maya for each separate part that I wanted to be textured differently (for example the skin would be a separate lambert to the skirt and shirt). Once I had done this, I started texturing my model again, and not only was this a lot faster, but also was a lot more precise with where the different textures went in comparison to my hand drawing it. I mainly used the preset textures in Substance Painter to texture the base of my model.

Once the base was set, I started on the face, where I had a lot of fun experimenting with the brush textures. I added painterly shading alongside freckles and hand-drawn highlights in areas such as the inner corners of their eyes and their nose. It did take a while to get used to creating a new layer for every time you want to use a different colour tho. I used the scar brush in Substance Painter to create a 3D effect which I think elevated the design a lot, making it appear more intricate.

I repeated the texturing process for the rest of the body, making a moth wing-inspired design on the shirt using the symmetry tool in brush mode, as well as adding seam textures of little stitches along the hem, which was a nice small detail.

My favourite thing that I textured (as well as the face) was definitely the wings. I first started by overlaying two different textures at different opacities on the wings (paper and lace) to help give them a fragile appearance. Then, using an embossing pen tool, I freestyled (with the symmetry tool again) to create the wing design, which helped give it a natural-looking flow, and definitely accentuated the delicate look.

With my model textured, I am really happy with the work I have created. It feels as though my 3D modelling techniques have definitely improved as a whole.

Something no one asked for or is interested in,but my delusions of protagonism can't help

I've been animating and drawing for years now,even tho I'm still not an adult.

Cool,right?The funniest part of my journey was...is!Making fun of my old artstyles!!

So why don't we do it together, highlighting each small detail that made it look like crap?I'll take it as a yes!

Here we go!

This was one of my first artstyles in the history of my art.

It had no details nor particular things,which is pretty normal since it was an 8-10 year old's artstyle.

I honestly think it's iconic amongst my friends and especially ex classmates from elementary school...I used to be the class artist back then, haha!

Since the artstyle is a bit modified,I'll share some actual drawings!!

This is just a small part of the amount of drawings I have with these photos...(ignore the hand,I took those photos something like two years ago and I didn't have acrylic nails back then)I used to make comics about my OCS and my selfsona...The girl in the drawings.Since my real name is Maya and I was pretty edgy back then,I decided DemonGirlMaya to be my name.

Let's move to the next artstyle,one of my favorites!

It was my piggy era,I was so happy and carefree back then.Just kidding,I was more asocial than now.But I was happy:)

I honestly love It,not only because of the weirdness but also because it brings me happy memories

Anyways,going back to the artstyle,it lacked details too.Something particular about it was the head shape,which is something that I kept in the Subsequent artstyles I'll show you after this one.

I was in love with animating,I was so proud of my animations and I couldn't stop doing it from time to time,my head was full of ideas and my art was ready to give them life as animations

After being ok with my gender for years,my brain decided it was time to start a trans era because why not.

It lasted something like less than a year and I honestly don't think it should have started.It was so cringe, especially because it was fake after all.

The characters were thick as fuck,they looked so weird and boxy.

I left the piggy fandom and created my own series,“Life is a tale” which I erased from my likings after two or three months of trying to make the episodes...Animating became hard and boring,so I gave up a bit...I was obsessed with gore.

At this point we all know about metaphorical yuri, but i think we can kinda play with the details of why it feels yuri

Yuri is about women, but excluding almost every bit of womanhood relating to men. Which really doesn't leave much. Womanhood has been defined by it's relation to manhood for a very long time, and even some feminist circles rarely discuss womanhood without lamenting men

But manhood is often left undiscussed in yuri. They're girls because they're lesbians and without men to contrast girls are just girls. Creatures. At it's platonic ideal, just like how a coyote you see on the roadside is only a boy or a girl because you decide they are. If you don't decide, it's just a funny little critter

Society sees male as default, and anything else is both abnormal and inferior. To reject that perspective so thoroughly that not even the resentment of manhood remains changes how you see the world

A beautiful scenery is now yuri not just because it's pretty, but because you're so thoroughly estranged from the concept of manhood that if men aren't in your direct sight the concept may as well not exist

And of course this can be extrapolated in many directions. A relationship is literal yuri when they're lesbians. It's metaphorical yuri when they have cast off social construction so thoroughly as to return to monkey

Platonic yuri by default has to play with metaphorical yuri. If it's not a queerplatonic kinda deal, there's gotta be something else evading description. 2 girl besties who kiss for men are not yuri, but a scientist and the animal she's raised and studied for years is

Yuri of scenery and such is more of a mindset than something you can express (tho it's probably possible). Scenery becomes yuri when you see nature without constructing men. A funky bug isn't a "he", it's a funky little creature

This is why the more transgender, polyamorous, etc a story is the more yuri it is. Especially if it doesn't try to quantify those aspects beyond hey it's gay shit

I am not well versed in yaoi, but as I understand it for something to be a theoretical metaphorical yaoi it would involve social construct to a satirical level. Manhood exists without women, but without the ability (or desire) to prove your heterosexuality you resort to more and more convoluted measures to assert your manhood. Yaoi is all about drawing random lines in the sand and fighting over them like they're your newborn baby

Metaphorical het is just default settings. You don't reject social construct but you don't embrace it to a comedic extent. You're just taking reality as your superiors present it to you without question. You can see it in more assimilationist yuri and yaoi but any author of gay shit worth their salt is gonna throw it in the bin or use it as a stepping stone for more interesting dynamics. Same for any author of straight shit that I'd give a chance

Metaphorical yuri and metaphorical yaoi can be a fun end goal relationship dynamic, but metaphorical heterosexuality is a hallmark movie. It's the girlboss suddenly realizing she wanted kids all along because a big strong man told her she did. Straight gays buy their suburban house and have their nuclear families and never question anything about society beyond the bigotry that affects them

As an example for each, utena and anthy are metaphorical het in the start, but become peak metaphorical yuri when utena finally sees anthy as she is and not just a princess to be saved. They become anthy and utena, not princess and prince, and leave behind the chains of gender and patriarchy

Claudine and maya are metaphorical yaoi because their relationship is built on drawing a line and flaunting it to the other when they cross it first. The idea they have a hard uke/seme dynamic is wrong, but they *definitely* taunt each other about whether it's mayakuro or kuromaya. It's loving competition, but sand lines nonetheless

Asa and denji have metaphorical yaoi in the way of what could be a happy metaphorical yuri relationship. It's not metaphorical het getting in the way because the sand lines are simply too elaborate and unrelated to their genders. Both of them just want to be some creature who is loved, but denji clings to being chainsaw man because it's easier than being loved as denji. And asa's web of insecurities and circumstances preventing her from letting loose could be used as a hammock

Papika and cocona are great metaphorical yuri because cocona breaks down all her previous ideas about love and life before landing on just loving papika. The truth about herself, her past, and her own feelings is more complex than she can expect to understand so she settles on loving her girlfriend. In the end papika does some of this too, when she gets her memory of her previous life back. She may have been papikana before, but she was reborn. She isn't papikana anymore, so she shouldn't try and force herself to be papikana again

Just some musings but i think it would be fun to think and discuss this. Especially if someone better versed in yaoi than me pitches in on that one
