I find interesting how their Hamato Clan trauma affected both Splinters in nearly perfect opposite ways.

2012 Splinter lost his family thanks to the Shredder, because of Tang Shen and because of what the Hamato did against the Foot, Saki's original clan.

So he became overprotective of the turtles to the point of sheltering them and forbidding them to go topside (and interact with anyone else) for 15 years. He still trained them througly and thaught them all he knew, including how he got them in their Mutation Day.

Rise Splinter was so embittered to the Hamato Clan and their traditions that for sometime he rid himself of the Hamato Yoshi identity and keep most of his teachings (i do believe he thaught them some basic stuff) heritage and the origin of the turtles mutation in secret. But he also gave them more freedom to be kids and go topside, giving them the chance to interact with humans and the city.

And through both shows we come more into a balance, with 12 Splinter letting his kids explore and learn and Rise Splinter learning to get his shit together and be more attentive to his kids.

Both are just heavily traumatized men doing their best to raise 4 kids with little resources or support.

Day 12: Birdsong

Dealing with Vinnie when Sunil wasn’t around was hard enough.

Dealing with him when Sunil wasn’t around for good three weeks far, far away in another country was harder.

And being his girlfriend on top of that? Well, that was just a whole different thing.

However, there were seldom calm moments among those hectic ones, like this one. Penny Ling woke up just when the sun had barely risen and hardly yet still brightened the room through the curtains. She yawned and checked her phone - 8 am, huh? This was the time she would normally get up, even on non-working days but… not today. Today, someone was preventing her from moving away from the bed, at least for now.

“Good morning,” She said so quietly it could barely even be called a whisper.

Vinnie did not move one bit as she ran her hand through his green hair and pressed him more against her chest.

She didn’t utter another word, spending the next hour on paying tactile attention to her sleeping partner, her movements as graceful and delicate as ever.

However, after that hour has passed, just when Penny heard the first sounds of chirping birds, Vinnie finally wiggled in place causing her to tense up a bit. He yawned and turned a bit on top of her, now lying fully on his front and looked up at her.

“Hi, Penny.”

“Hi, love.” She planted a kiss on his freckled cheek. “...How do you feel?”

“Huh? I just woke up… wait… wait!” Vinnie’s body coiled like a spring and soon he was on his all fours and reaching for his phone, then moving his fingers on it with mad speed. The countdown was just as bad as he remembered - 2 weeks 3 days 5 hours 34 minutes and 56 seconds, 57, 58… “Ughhh.” He grunted and fell back onto his girlfriend. “It’s been forever already, how come it’s forever still.”

“I know, Vinnie, I know. It can’t be easy for you.” She held him close but there were nervous tremors running down his body under her hands. “It’s one of the first times you two are so long apart, isn’t it?”

“Yes, yes, it is! It’s way too long, I can’t be so long without him.” Vinnie’s eyes were wide, his face pale. “I can’t be left alone like that!”

“Vinnie, dear, you’re not alone.” He opened his mouth, but Penny put a finger to it. “I am here.”

“You’re not the same!” Vinnie screamed, almost frothing at the mouth, but as soon as it happened his breath caught in his throat. “I’m… I’m sorry, I’m a horrible boyfriend, I’m sorry.”

“No, Vinnie, I won’t pretend it didn’t hurt me a bit,” Penny smiled softly at him, though there was definitely a flicker of pain in there, “but I know it’s not the real you talking. You’re just really distressed, I understand. I mean, I’m distressed all the time, enough to cry too.”

“I’m not going to cry though.”

“I know. Whatever you do, I’ll be here.”

“But… what do I do? What do we do?” Vinnie whispered with a sharp breath.

“The same thing we do every time.” Penny moved her hand down his jaw to his ear and scratched behind it. “Just tell me what exactly you need from me? To be here? To give you space? To make sure you don’t destroy anything? I know you never want solutions so-.”

“Solution! Yes, that’s what I need.” Vinnie moved so violently the covers slid down his back, Penny however quickly took care of it.

“Really? But you always say there’s no solution to those situations for you.”

“Yes, but I have never been away from him for so long. Well,” He stopped and flushed a bit, “not while we have been a thing anyway.”

“I suppose that’s true.” Penny couldn’t help but giggle a little despite the tension in the air. “Actually, there’s no perfect solution-.”

“There isn’t!?”

“Not the kind you are probably hoping for, no, but there are ways to make it better.” She returned to scratching behind his ear making his face soften a little. “And the ones I like to use are… distractions,” She finished with a playful triumph.

“Distractions? Okay, I’m listening.” His tone was relatively calm, yet still quite jittery. 

“Yes, just… focusing on other things, you know?”

“Like what?”

“Weeell,” Penny looked around the room, but nothing quite caught her attention, nothing visual at least. However, that’s when she decided to focus on her other senses - hearing, aha! “Like the sound of the lovely birdsong outside the window.”

“A birdsong, huh? …Okay.” Vinnie huffed softly and cuddled up to Penny face down, but leaving his ears free, also free for Penny to lavish attention upon with her fingers making him groan softly. Few calm and silent minutes passed but just when Penny thought she found the perfect solution a bit too quickly Vinnie practically jumped in place. “No, it’s not working at all! I tried, but I can’t. Honestly, the only thing I could focus on was Sunil and a bit on your touch.”

“I see…” Penny sighed but then her mind backtracked. “Actually, you know what? There is a much more effective, and a much more pleasant way to go about it.”

“There is?”

“Yes, if one distraction doesn’t work, another one just might.”

“But what?”

“Something that you just said.” Penny’s smile turned into a slightly teasing one. Not letting him think, she pulled him closer and captured his lips. She felt his gasp against her own just before she easily overpowered whatever strength he had left and turned them both to the side, with her boyfriend now trapped between her and the wall.

As their mouths continued moving against each other Penny knew she found some sort of solution. Now, she only had to keep it up forrrr, she managed to catch the countdown on Vinnie’s phone with the corner of her eye, ah yes, 2 weeks 3 days 5 hours and approximately 40 minutes. Oh boy.
