“If you’ve gone your whole life and you’ve never seen anything made in your own image,” says Shonda Rhimes, perched in a striped chair at the start of the trailer for Black Barbie, “there is damage done.”

In the first look at Shondaland’s newest documentary, U.S. Representative Maxine Waters adds further context to Rhimes’ salient words, reminding us that it wasn’t that long ago that there were no Black dolls. It took 21 years from Barbie’s conception in 1959 for the first official Black Barbie to be introduced to the world in 1980. Soon, in 15 days, the story behind how it happened will be widely seen for the first time.

That story is largely told through the first-person perspectives of three Black women who worked at Mattel during the iconic doll’s incubation: Kitty Black Perkins, Stacey McBride-Irby, and Davis’ Aunt Beulah Mae Mitchell. “I’m excited for people to know their names, a part of their story, and this part of history,” says Davis.
