Russel and Max become best friends really fast- Rus learns a new language so he can understand Maximum and his sister more easily. The human thinks this is just basic decency, but the fairies (unused to human-type people concerning themselves with talking to them) both fall a little platonically head over heels for the guy. Rus is oblivious to it, because he views himself as a soggy piece of cardboard that people have to suffer through, not intentionally befriend and be nice to.
